Not just another preseason this year

The Hawks had two scrimmages Sunday, wrapping up the week-long two-a-day portion of training camp with a bit of a bang. It’s clear after watching them all week that this Hawks team is significantly deeper than last year’s crew. And that the collective athleticism, shooting prowess and overall energy is better than last year.

But the Hawks coaches are doing their best to stop mentioning last year. They don’t want to put that burden on this team, particularly with so many new faces in the mix. They’re also working in some new wrinkles, both offensively and defensively, that will be a departure from what they did last season.

How do you gauge the success of all this newness prior to the start of the regular season? Most teams don’t play all-out during the preseason, but for a team like the Hawks treating the preseason like something other than what it is (games that don’t count) could be beneficial.

Should the Hawks abandon conventional wisdom and try and win the preseason NBA title or use it as a lab to work out their issues in time for the real thing?

Glad to hear you feel this team is deeper and more talented. As far as the preseason, I’d like to see them do whatever they need to do, get everyone minutes, try some things, and avoid injuries…but yeah, I’d like to see them try and win some games (just ‘cause that would make me feel a lot better). If they don’t win, though, it’s not the end of the world. And just for good measure, I’d like to see Marvin perform better than he did during the summer league, also.

I for one think the Hawks should use the time during the preseason to focus on building team chemistry. No one expects us to be any better than last year and with a little chemistry and a desire to play the game we should be able to suprise a few teams. DO NOT SLEEP ON THE ATLANTA HAWKS THIS YEAR!!!!

I don’t see a problem with trying to win preseason games at the outset, but that doesn’t need to be the main focus. These guys do need to try and find some chemistry, and work on some plays, but they also need to know how it feels to win together. Perhaps winning should be a little more of a side effect rather than a focused result, in the preseason, anyway.

Rookie of the Year, S 2 the second power. Salim Stoudamire for Rookie of the Year.

I’ve never been too concerned with the backcourt, the frontcourt has concerned me. All I ask is that there is toughness and aggression on that end and I’m sure that more than 13 wins is achievable. Don’t dwell on what happened last season, this is a new one. We did some things in the draft and in FA. I’m beginning to think that the the lack of pursuit on the baby Bulls may have been smart. Depth, is all I’m asking for, if a cat goes down, replace him. Lue is there to backup the J Square experiment and he did a wonderful thing to stay with the Hawks. Hopefully these things will roll over in this season and like I said before, wins more than 13 are attainable.

I remember the Phoenix Suns last year destroying everyone during the pre-season. And that kind of winning attitude carried over to the regular season. In my opinion, the Hawks should try to demolish every team during the pre-season to send a message… That they are no-longer the bottom dwellers of the league!

The Hawks should play to win all of their pre-season games. I think that if we play fast and furious on offense and DEFENSE everyone will get to play, just to keep up the intensity.

As coach said earlier this year, the team has to learn how to win. That said, every win is important. But even more than that, they must learn from their losses as well. Gotta keep their learning curve steap either way. Peace.

If they are selling tickets (as opposed to giving them away) shouldn’t they be trying to win anyway? I mean it would be different if they let the fans attend for free, so we could practice our cheering. I want to go to the game on Tuesday, but why should I spend my money if the are not trying to win the game?

We should try to win every game we can. Winning is contageous, especially with the fact we only won 13 last season. In addition, as mentioned by other bloggers, we need to build chemistry. I am especially looking forward to the performance of our forwards and defensive effort. Maybe Esteban can help us with some rebounding. Heard he loves to bang on the inside. Lord knows we need some aggressive rebounding.

I think we’ll be fine and I also think we’ll suprise some people. I am optimistic.

No i don’t think winning is important in the preseason but for this team its very important. They really do need to learn how to play, hustle, and win together. I think this team will win more than it did last year i am very excited.

The Hawks need to come out of the gate running full speed. Winning is a great way to jump start chemisty. The coaches needs to allow these guys to gain some momentum and confidence going into this season and winning is what does that.

I can’t stress it enough how important it is for the Hawks to dominate the pre-season. It will help their confidence quite a bit. But according to Sekou they have a new shooting prowess, that they didn’t have last year. And that’s good, because otherwise teams won’t have to repect the perimeter shot and could collaspe on Josh Smith every time he goes in. Yeah I believe they are going to wreck the competition this year if they focus.

Good to see nobody thinks we need a proven center?? And don’t give me this business about Milwaukee’s bench rider last year and this foreign import who has played 0 minutes in the NBA there is a reason they have European leagues. It’s for the scrubs who can’t hack it over here. Backcourt is solid, what happens if we have an injury to Al?

P.S. who cares about the preseason, games don’t count and if you go all out, someone WILL get hurt it’s inevitable and there’s a reason preseason games aren’t on TV, no one cares until they count. Big deal we beat the rest of the leagues backups and their experimentation in preseason.

Still you guys soon forgeet that winning, is not just an action… it’s also a state of mind. A “proven” center hardly exists even for the defending champs my good man. So this whole we need a center thing is quite silly. Getting into the habit of winning is so important to a team that has yet to feal back to back victories in the regular season or pre-season. Yeah, pre-season does tend have alot of scrubs in it, but for our team it is a must to “demolish” those scrubs into oblivion. And anyone who says”who cares about the pre-season” makes me laugh when obviously they care enough to post in a Hawks blog way before the regular season even starts. “Silly” is normally a word I would reserve for talking to girls or the metally handi-capped, in this case i believe both reasons would work in responce to the last few posts.

I believe this should be judged more on +/- when the true contributors are on the court. who knows how the end of the bench will play and that’s the chance you take bringing them in for training camp. If the starters and key subs have a positive impact in their respective time on the floor i think the coaching staff will be happy and so would I. i do agree the hawks need to develop a winning attitude but that is more than just making baskets it’s the bond of the team. the relationship where everyone on the team is willing to go to war for one common cause, i.e. (pistons, spurs) WIN. these teams genuinely like each other and it shows in their play because they have that level of trust. THAT’S HOW YOU BUILD A WINNER.

I agree with you, Aaron. And, in spite of the loss, looks like “Milwaukee’s bench rider” did pretty good in the first game. Let’s hope there’s more where that came from. I wonder why anti-Hawks fans keep putting their “silly” posts in here?

Hi! I’m an Uruguayan fan of the Hawks who was very happy to know that an Uruguayan player, Batista, was part of the team. Yesterday, he played and contributed with 15 points to the Hawks victory with a perfect 11/11 faults and he played only 15 minutes. There is not a single comment about this amazing appearance of a rocky who scored double points from the starter position Pachulia who scored only 8 in 22 minutes. That is not fair! It would be nice to encourage your new players, maybe not so famous but effective, and say something about them. In Uruguay, we were waiting for this young boy to play and succeed and I tried to check how he played last night and there wasn’t ANY KIND OF INFO about the THIRD BEST SCORING PLAYER OF LAST NIGHT!!! You can not forget your last season’s performance if you don’t include the new generation’s performance and what they contribute to the Hawks. Lots of Uruguayan expect a lot from this player and we also expect YOU to include him in the NEWS because it WAS HIS FIRST GAME EVER IN THE NBA AND THERE WAS NO INFORMATION SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. NOT A GOOD STARTING, I SHOULD SAY… WE CAN SUPPORT ATLANTA HAWKS FROM URUGUAY NOW THAT THERE IS AN URUGUAYAN PLAYER BUT IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE ANY KIND OF INFO ABOUT WHAT HE DOES.
