Barbecue fetes Charlie Company
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Baghdad, Iraq — With the end of a grueling, year-long deployment in sight, one platoon of a Gainesville-based infantry unit decided to celebrate with a good old-fashioned American barbecue.
Soldiers threw hot dogs and Bubba Burgers from Georgia on the grill that stood between rows of trailers that Charlie Company of the 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment calls home at Camp Liberty here in the war zone.
The familiar aroma of grilled meat wafted through the air as the sun set behind the living area. Soldiers heaped potato salad, cole slaw and chips on their plates and settled for soft drinks and non-alcoholic beer during the gathering thrown by the non-commissioned officers of 3rd platoon.
The party was a show of appreciation for the soldiers of the Georgia Army National Guard’s 48th Brigade Combat Team who have been patrolling in the Baghdad and Abu Ghraib areas since their arrival in June last year. They are the only 48th Brigade unit still out in the neighborhoods and streets of Baghdad, where the security situation has worsened since the bombing of a Shiite mosque in Samarra in February.
The shindig provided a little taste of home just weeks before Charlie Company is scheduled to board a plane to fly back to Fort Stewart.
All they lacked was Georgia greenery. And some cold Budweiser.

This Unit-the 121st- has really gone out of it’s way and done so much more then any other unit that is attached to the 48th. My family and friends are not with this unit but are attached to the 48th and they were able to move back in Oct/ Nov to a little more safer base plus they are able to spend so much time on line-due to wireless. But this Unit-the 121st—They have still been doing dangerouse Mission’s daily- they are not able to just sit on line and in chat rooms like other units- they have really shown many want it Truely means to be in the National Guard….Guys / Gals of the 121st—THANK YOU.. THANK YOU for being the men and women you are and for not giving up when everyone else was given a chance to slack down some.. It’s been a long hard road— We Will See You All Soon At Stewart…

I have to say that C 1/121 has not necessarily done more than any other unit, they have just been in the news more and had more attention. My husband is not with C 1/121 but he is still doing very dangerous missions and has plans to do missions up until the day he leaves to come back home. I believe that all the guys in Iraq are doing a great job and a person cannot say that one unit is doing more than another unit. All the units are working to together to get the missions done. That is what being part of a Brigade is about. One unit cannot take more credit than other unit. Also, it depends on who you talk to. Every unit/solider feels they are going beyond the call of duty to get their missions finished. Until you know what every unit/soldier is doing please don’t disregard what the other soldiers are doing in Iraq. Just because you don’t see them in the news all the time, doesn’t mean they aren’t doing just as dangerous missions and doing more than their fair share. And every unit feels they are the unit that is getting shafted when it comes to being in Iraq. My husbands unit has not even been in the news so you have no idea what my husband goes thru everyday to be able to say that C 1/121 has done more than any other unit.

I think all the units and soldiers overseas are doing a wonderful job and going beyond the call of duty. Just because C 1/121 is always on the ajc website doesn’t necessarily mean they are the ones doing the most dangerous missions and doing more than any other unit. Please, until you know what each unit and soldier is doing, don’t assume because you see C 1/121 in the news that means they are doing more than every other unit. My husband’s unit has not been on the ajc website but yet I know my husband is still running very dangerous missions and will continue to do so until he leaves to come back home. Also, my husband does not sit online and search the web. There have been times when I have gone weeks without talking to him due to his missions. It takes a brigade to complete what needs to be completed in Iraq not one unit. If you ask any soldier, I’m sure they will say they are in the worst conditions and are getting shafted in Iraq. I only ask that you be knowledgeable of every unit’s accomplishments before making any statement that dispells what other units are doing or saying that the other units are sitting online and in chat rooms. I am sure my husband would certainly disagree with your statement. He is there to do a job, not to sit online as you have indicated in what other units are doing. I’m not saying there aren’t some soldiers able to sit online, but not every unit other than C 1/121 is sitting online and not still running dangerous missions. Please do your research and be knowledgeable before making uneducated statements and dispelling what other units are doing in Iraq.

Douglasville supporter, it is possible to show pride and support for one unit of the 48th without degrading the accomplishments of the others. When did you say you got back from your tour in Iraq? If you haven’t been, you should go - it might help you to understand and appreciate the danger that all of these brave men and women face daily. Every soldier over there is essential to the mission, and until you take a walk in their boots, you have no right to judge anyone.

To “By just a supporter from Douglasville”. You make me sick to my stomach. How dare you compare other units to this one as if you ever walked in thier shoes. My loved one is not having a bbcue right now. Nor has he ever. You ARE ATTACHED to this group or you would not have posted this message. How many times do people like you have to be told that these soldiers don’t make decisions as to where they go or don’t. I wish you would give your name, as I would love to meet you in Ft Stewart and have you meet my loved one who is not with the 121st, so that you could tell him that he has done nothing over there. Has your loved one been injured by mortar attack or any other attack for that matter? Do you work for the media? There has to be a reason that you would write a comment that did not support ALL troops of the 48th - not to mention ALL troups in general….
To the 121at - We love you guys so much and hope to see you soon. We are so proud of you and all that you stand for and have accomplished “over there” - as is with ALL 4500+ of you guys that are a part of the 48th brigade. Home is getting near and our prayers are with you all for a safe return ASAP. Love ALL of the 48th and can’t wait for you ALL to get home.

I am just so sick and tired of hearing “well so and so ” has it so hard. Everyone has it hard, they are away from their loved ones. The mission may be different but they still have hardships. Not everyone has the time to just sit on line and chat. Grow up!

The second and more applicable definition is…. fêtes To celebrate or honor with a festival, 1. a feast, or an elaborate entertainment. 2. To pay honor to.

Unfortunately, many of the things that you say to the ones who live in a self-inflicted bubble fall on deaf ears. People live in the realm of their own personal perception and what troubles them ranks high on the trouble meter of their own lives. Playing the martyr is what many are well accomplished in. One thing to consider is would you drive to the home of the 26 widows and families and stand on their doorstep and complain to them that you are upset by the fact that your husband has it harder than the rest. Heaven only knows what the tragedy that those families are living with day to day. In 10 or 15 years this will all be a blur to many of us, but not to them. They will live with loss for the rest of their lives. You can all complain until you are blue in the face, and the rest can all criticize to try to make a point until you are blue in the face. You can’t change another person’s perspective until life changes it for them. I know without a doubt that we are not out of the woods yet and continue to daily plead with God to bring my husband home, if that means a month or another year. Whatever the case may be, don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Many people in this nation, thanks to the sacrifices of thousands upon thousands, are able to live for themselves day to day and see the rest of the world as if it is in the shadow of what they experience. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but life’s troubles won’t end when the boys step off the plane. Life is guaranteed to bring turmoil and trouble, and will until we take our last breath. Some may want to venture out and try to show mercy and humilty when speaking in a public forum. You are a slap in the face to the families of those we have lost when you bicker and complain. Just remember that when you want to sing the world your sob story, try to find someone who buys it next time, these folks aren’t wanting your free concert.

I get really sick of wives bickering unnecessarily. GET OVER YOURSELF! Your husbands need your support. Focus on that! I’m proud of all of our soldiers. My husband is a part of Charlie Co. from Gainesville and I know for a fact that he has been working in the combat zone rigorously for the majority of his time deployed. However, I do not discount what other soldiers are doing. We are considered to have an Army of One, right? Wives quit competing with each other and support our ENTIRE armed forces. When it’s all said and done, we should unite and welcome our soldiers home with open arms.

Isn’t there a reporter embedded with C 1/121? There isn’t one with every unit so it’s impossible to put a unit in the news when there is no reporter there to see what all is happening with other units. I think all these families are asking is that before someone makes a comment discounting what other soldiers are doing, they get all the information first.

Regardless of what unit you or your loved one is in, no one gets a “free pass” just because he/she came to Iraq. This bickering on this blog is much the same as the bickering in Iraq. Only your soldier when he or she lays down at night knows what they did, what they didn’t do, and how well they did it. So, if you were not, are not there, don’t presume that you know anything about what others are doing or not doing. I have witnessed acts of cowardice and courage, selfishness and selflessness and have to remind myself everyday that “there but for the grace of God go I”. Pray for an end to the war, to the safe homecoming of ALL the soldiers, and quit friggin whining.

Although I have a personal connection with Charlie Co from Gainesville and I am very proud of them and what they have done, I also deeply appreciative and grateful for each and every man and woman in our military that have put their life on the line to fight this war. My heart goes out to their families and friends also. As I along with the other families and friends prepare to celebrate the return of our loved ones I will still remember and continue to pray for the soldiers still there. The yellow ribbon will remain tied around my trees unit EVERYONE of our soldiers are home. There aren’t enough thanks to really give for the hard work these men and women have done. But I would just like to say thanks, God Bless you all see you when you all come home! To my soldier CP counting down the days to see your face! Hang in there stay safe see ya soon!!!

I just want to say i am a wife of a charlie company soldier. However they have been doin alot since they have arrived to Iraq. What i belive some of the wifes and soliders that have posted on this site meant was charlie company is the only company with in there brigade still doing outside patrols. There are still other members with in the 48th brigade still doin patrols and is still often in harmsway. I wouldnt agree with the poor excuse of a woman that says charlie company is the best there is. We the wifes, husbands, girlfriends ect, Dont know how it is over there we only know what our solider is tellin us or what the media wishes to put out. Every last solider over there is a hero and always will be. Its our duty back home to support all the soldiers. Like alot of people has said Be glad your soldier is comeing home. My heart goes out to the ones that there soldier will not be comeing home. We love you all and pray for safe return for all the soldiers. Keep your heads down. Not to much longer and you all will be home HOOAH……

To JustASupporterWithSpellcheck and others…. I support EVERYONE as a whole.. I have friends in Many of these UNITS—and I can say-that I am able to talk to many friends in other UNITES ALL THE TIME ON THE NET—cause they are NOT doing Mission’s and all they are doing is packing their stuff and counting the days to come home..Some of my friends only have 37 days left. You are not walking in their shoes either. You are posting comments on this Blog just like everyone else. So someone posted what they feel and Probably do see—-do we have to ALWAYS BASH here. Have you been to Iraq? Have you fought and had brothers die beside you and there was nothing you could do? Yes, SOME OF US ARE STILL DOING MISSIONS-YES, SOME OF US DO NOTHING BUT SIT ON THE INTERNET AND THEN THERE ARE SOME OF US-WHO JUST WANT TO FINISH UP AND COME HOME. I don’t know of any unit that will do mission’s up to the day we leave, but I can say, I do know that there are some units that stop doing mission’s weeks ago.BUT I do know that from what is said…this is one of the ONLY company that is still doing combat patrols in the 48th. So don’t Bash on someone, esp. when NOONE on this Blog knows Anyone, and You are not as good as anyone else.

I have to say that there is no need to attack someone personally. Everyone is going to think that their soldier’s unit is the best. The first amendment gives everyone the freedom of speech but attacking someone personally just because they give an opinion that doesn’t agree with your’s is uncalled for. You can give your own opinion without attacking another person.

WoW! Almost a year now, our soldiers are coming home soon, hopefully no more injuries and for goodness sake you people are still bickering. GET OVER YOUR SELVES and be thankfull for OUR soldiers, ALL OF THEM. You know it takes about 10 admin people to support 1 bullet shooter. and from what I have seen, everyone has become a bullet shooter. So I dont get the disconnect with you wives, spouses, mothers, fathers, whomever giving anyone a ration of crap. Without OUR soldiers doing what they have done and continue to do, We as a VERY FREE AMERICAN PEOPLE would not be able to do what we are doing. Remember that and look past the small picture and check out the big picture, it might just be very interesting and informative.
Now on a Personal Note: Sgt Frank Fortner, do you remember how mad you got at me when I made you re-do your push ups on that pt test before you went to that school. That motivation that you showed me at over achieving to succede I hope is what has kept you and the other 1-121 soldiers that I had the honor to be in contact with safe. You are almost home now, now is the most dangerous time, dont let your guard down. Remember my two Tenants: 1. Be the best Killer you can be 2. Come home safe Remember all the implied tasks that go along with them and you will do well. Frank, I am proud of you, Charlie Company, the 1-121, and the 48th Bde. I havent been on here for awhile, there was just to much back biting, and this will probably be my last. get home safe soon and I will buy you a beer or Pepsi.

Seems to me you all are falling into the pit the press has created. Do not bicker amongst yourselves. All our soldiers deserve the same respect and recognition for their missions. At least you Georgia people know what is happening to your loved ones. You surely have not see much press on the guys who were deployed with your men who came from other parts of the country. But we are not on line complaining…
