Baby Noor out of hospital for now

Doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta discharged 3-month-old Noor al-Zahra of Iraq on Friday.

Plans to insert a shunt to drain fluid from Noor’s brain were scrapped after exams found no accumulation of fluid. That may mean Noor will need less intense follow-up care in Iraq, but it’s still possible that she’ll need a shunt, hospital officials said.

On Monday, surgeons removed a mass of skin from Noor’s back and repaired part of her spinal cord. She suffers from spina bifida, a birth defect.

Following the release, Baby Noor went to the home of a metro Atlanta family with her father and grandmother, who accompanied her from Iraq.

The host family has been trained to monitor Noor, and she will have regular checkups, said Helen Shepard of Childspring International, a nonprofit that arranges treatment in the United States for sick children from abroad.

Noor probably will remain in metro Atlanta for at least two months, with a second surgery to reposition her bladder. Doctors say she will be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life and is likely to have limited control of her bladder and bowels.

On Sunday, members of Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church plan to present a $25,000 check to Childspring a donation that is earmarked for Noor.

Is the child paralyzed? I am so happy that the surgery went well. I pray that everything continues to go well for the baby and her family. The doctors were so wonderful to do the surgery and to do it free of charge.

The doctors that performed this surgery are the best there is, in my opinion. My son, who is now 7, was a patient of theirs at the early age of 4 months and what a tremendous job they did. Dr. Hudgin’s partner, Dr. Boydston, is a Godsend and then some. I was thrilled to hear that Baby Noor was being treated by these physicians .. I knew that she was in excellent care.

It neverfails to amaze me, enev though we’ve had our own tragedies, that we find it within ourselves to give assistance to those even less fortunate than our own. I’m pleased that baby Noor seems so determined to live. GOD is indeed good!

Thanks to everyone! Atlanta is such a great community when we want to be! I know I sent a letter to Senator Saxby Chamblis to plead for help. Seems he and his staff got the visas just as they said they would and now she is here getting help.

  • The baby will not be able to move her legs but I am praying for a miracle. She could be the furture President of Iraq.

My baby girl born in 1955 had an extremely large myelomeningocele and because such a thin membrane covered it, she was hospitalized 11 months in isolation until she passed away due to infection. The Baby Noor story has really tugged at my heart and I hope she continues to do very well. In 1955 there was no surgery for this condition and we could not even hold her so the family is so lucky that they were at least able to have her at home and hold her and love her. I will continue to keep her in my prayers and God bless the soldiers that rescued her and made it possible for her to lead a somewhat normal life. Being in a wheelchair is not the end of the world. I have a 31 yr old grandson who is paralyzed from the armpits down and he leads a rather normal life. Blessings to the doctors, nurses and the family they are staying with while she recovers. She is really a little sweetheart!

That’s all well and good that the baby is alive…but what about the many babies who have the SAME birth defect that don’t get media attention? Why is this one so special? Why don’t we help the people in our own country first? Why does this one get the surgery first…and the donations… It doesn’t seem fair to the rest of those who are citizens of this country, and don’t get anything.

God Bless this child and all who have had a hand in making her life a better one.

But I am wondering if Moni is still in Iraq covering the 48th, or if that is over now. There have only been two articles about the soldiers in the last two weeks. Is this not what this site is about? I enjoy keeping up with the baby, but would really like to see a few more articles about our soldiers. I’m not complaining - just wondering???

I have to say ‘way to go!’ to everyone involved in the Baby Noor case (for lack of better terminology). Then I have to say, does anyone know how many of these poor children are over there? My husband is a medic and every day I hear these horrible stories of these children, that he sees, ‘not making it’ from burns and other illnesses. It is horrible! I just wish that we could care for all of the kids involved. But then too, I wish that we could care more for our own. Thanks for all of the big hearts out there!! I especially have to send a big hug to my favorite medic (Jonathan- you know who you are) for all that he and the guys with him are doing for the people over there and not getting as much attention. Thanks for all you do!!

unknown- obviously you are just trying to stir up drama, but i felt you needed to be answered. They are sending the soldiers home. Many of the soldiers have already been home on leave, many more are scheduled for leave in the coming weeks. Right now it looks as though the soldiers will be coming home according to schedule, after they have completed their mission. Baby Noor’s surgery is not affecting the return of the soldiers negatively, if anything it has been a positive thing, something that makes everyone realize the good that our soldiers are doing over there.

I’m happy that this beautiful child has received the treatment she needed, proud of the soldiers who made this possible but please AJC, more news of our 48th soldiers. We can turn on the tv and get news updates about the baby now, she has become a national story. Since Dec. 22nd there have been 20 articles about Baby Noor on this blog and 6 about the soldiers. Don’t think that I’m not interested in how Noor is doing, I am, but this is the ONLY place we can get info and articles about our 48th soldiers. Please return to the original intent of this blog. Another blog can and should be started for Baby Noor updates. Thank You.

Noor - President of Iraq? Why not? FDR made a good president and his mobility was a wheelchair. After all, people’s brains are not in their feet - but in there head. At least that’s what I learned in school :-))! AFter all, the brain has a lot of work and I’m glad I neither walk not sit on it.

Perhaps God has a plan for this child that will take years to reveal. She may be a shining light in her country. God bless her and her family and keep them safe and guid this child’s life.

Thank you to the entire 48th because they are where they are. As far as I have heard not one volunteer guardsman left the country to hide when told they would deploy. God bless each and bring them home safely. Remember that May is closer each day. We must be brave for our soldiers. Think about it, unknown, the deadline for them to touch down in Georgia is 4 months and 1 or 2 days away. They have been gone 8 months on the 16th and 17th of January. So, unknown, hold your breath - they have completed most of this deployment. May God hold each one in His hands for the remainder of the tour and place them in Georgia safely.

God bless each of the people who helped this child.

This kid is going home to be raised around people who hate us and want to kill our kids. We’re supposed to be winning THEIR hearts and minds, remember? We need to be taking care of our own.

To More Puzzled…No need to be mean …I do MANY things that are productive. How can you JUDGE me when you don’t KNOW who I REALLY am?!!! Maybe YOU don’t get it!

If you read the blogs, you will see that there is STILL a lack of support for this baby, her family and the guys who helped out. The support for the military was not great before the Baby Noor story. The support has grown and seems to be better with the exception of those who are being negative on here and who are negative in personal conversations. If you think support is there now or in the past, you need to get out more.

As far as the media, I know you can’t control them. I also know that they were there from the very beginning too. How? Jeff and I both talked to AJC reporters very early on and I know that one reporter was at Baby Noor’s house taking pictures from the very beginning. Together, these reporters worked very diligently to get the story published QUICKLY. I am not against the media, having worked in the media myself … they are doing their jobs and they were a HUGE part of getting help for C-Co. which led to Baby Noor’s being brought to Atlanta. I am THANKFUL for them.

I understand the faith and prayer … I practice it daily.

ONCE AGAIN you missed my point. My point is that when the spotlight hit, people came out of the woodwork … suddenly people were calling, emailing, posting blogs, etc. in support of soldiers that they hadn’t contacted in months or even years. Example: Jeff received emails from MANY people who had not contacted him in several months … people who turned their backs on him at a VERY difficult time in his life and pretty much shunned him when he announced he was going to Iraq. (I felt like he might as well have won the lottery … fair-weather friends showed up to collect their portion.) Ok … I will admit this is one soldier’s story BUT I have heard others that are pretty similar.

YES…as family members and close friends, we do support our soldiers and love them 24/7/365 but we all know how people can be…some people only want to be part of what makes them LOOK GOOD and they may or may not have any REAL regard for the people involved. We live in an “it’s-all-about-meâ€? society.

I am NOT touting the “I’m 1Lt. Jeff Morgan’s girlfriendâ€?. I am PROUD to be his girlfriend and HAVE been since we started dating. I have told people since BEFORE he left that I am his girlfriend and am proud of him and what he is doing and will continue as long as I am his friend, girlfriend, fiancée, or wife. If that is touting in your OPINION, I am deeply sorry for you. Maybe one day I can write blogs that say I am his wife. I plan to marry him and not because of this … we talked about it before he left! I see that others identify themselves as “_’sâ€? wife, friend, etc. Why single me out…because my boyfriend spearheaded this effort? I support him ALWAYS not just when he does something heroic. (The important thing is this…he and God both know that. It’s not really between you and me, is it?)

By the way, are you supporting what Jeff is doing now? Do you even know where he is and what he is doing now? What about the rest of C-Co.? Do you know where they are and what they are doing? Do you support their efforts? Do you support what the rest of the military men and women are doing? The answer should be…I support them no matter where they are or what they are doing; heroic or not!!!!

I LOVE YOU LTCJ!

Jenni (NO “E on the end), as ALWAYS proud to be 1Lt. Jeff Morgan’s girlfriend

By Andy

Quit picking on Jenni…as her best friend and someone who has known her for about 25 years, I can honestly say that YOU don’t know HER heart. I know her well enough that I can honestly say she DOES NOT “toutâ€? anything!

She has been devoted to 1Lt. Jeff Morgan from the beginning!!! Let her be PROUD of being Jeff’s girlfriend. (We would be proud if it was our boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/friend/etc. that had been part of this. Others on here have also claimed to be associated with one of the soldiers involved.)

I hope that Jenni and Jeff get married one day…they are both wonderful people and deserving of what they have to offer each other! Both have been through more than anyone should ever have to go through in life and emerged from it stronger than ever before.

I am proud to know Jenni and look forward to meeting Jeff. I was out of the country when he was home and they met so I have not met him. I look forward to getting to know him!

Jenni and Jeff…I am PROUD of you both and look forward to seeing you soon! You are in my thoughts and prayers always.

Love, Andy

Good Grief! All the bickering amongst people who don’t even KNOW each other!! I’m just an “observer” - I have friends and family over there who are not in the 48th brigade. Someone will probably tell me I don’t even have a right to post this here…but I USED to read this site daily to get a glimpse of what our soldiers lives are like, because we don’t have an embedded reported like the 48th does. What a blessing you have…and what a mess it has become!! You who are so defensive - I can understand how angry you must feel, but you are just feeding the fires of morons who only want to stir a pot and apparently have nothing better to do with their time! Don’t give the naysayers even one minute more of your time (to respond to their nonsense…)-and hopefully the AJC will soon get back to reporting on the soldiers and their lives. What they have done for baby Noor is a wonderful thing - but isn’t this supposed to be about the soldiers? God Bless all of you who are over there… Thank you for serving - regardless of why you are there, you ARE there, sticking it out and doing a great job. You’re ALL in this one girl’s prayers every day.
