From cheerleader to GI Jane
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Dublin, Ga. — Brean Hancock knows she’s one of the unlikeliest soldiers in the Georgia National Guard’s 48th Brigade Combat Team.
Little more than a year ago, she was a cheerleader at Dublin High School, a popular senior whose sense of style led one teacher to call her “Miss Lip Gloss.” Once she joined the Guard, the petite size that had seemed so cute on the football sidelines became a liability.

I admire Brean, her courage and spunk. I appreciate the coverage she got and the concern her parents feel. Nice story.
I hope one of your future profiles is of a GA 48th soldier stationed at one of the Mahmudiyah FOBs without adequate facilities who goes out on daily patrols. Dave has been working hard to cover that side of the war and is covering it well on this blog and sometimes on inside pages in the AJC. But the blog doesn’t have the high impact exposure that today’s Sunday front page feature article had on the metro Atlanta area.
As I read this article this morning in the paper, I was struck by the thought that readers will conclude that things really don’t seem so bad in Iraq.
Our soldiers deserve for the Sunday paper-reading public to see the same tough place that Dave is writing about.

To Ross Braun, Lance Brown, Paul Mayes, and Paul Saylor and all other members of the 48th - You are in my prayers everyday and I want you to know how proud I am of all of you. Thank you so much for the sacrifice you all are making for the cause of freedom. It makes me all the more proud to be an American - Remember, the folks back home in Bremen, GA, and especially Bremen High School appreciate and love you very much! Keep the faith, do good work and come home soon! You make us all proud! God bless! Carol Murphy
