Is Exercise Addictive?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I have to admit that even though I used to be a self-proclaimed couch potato, my body really enjoys “working” - getting my blood flowing, my muscles engaged, my heart and lungs fully functioning. Just like my brain feels good after I complete a difficult zudoku or word puzzle, my body feels good after a weight-training or cardio session.
This incredible trainer that I’ve been able to work with through the AJC Fitness Challenge encourages me to come in even on my “off days” to take advantage of his cardio equipment. It’s good for me to make that commitment “Yes, I’m coming in today” because I’ve found that if I wait until I go all the way home from work, my commitment level has fallen and I am a little less likely to go as hard, as long or at all. (Hopefully, those days will be in the past soon, however.)
I went to the training studio yesterday and did 50 minutes on the elliptical and treadmill. My heart rate was UP there, I was huffing and puffing, and I was sweating hard. All those things I used to avoid like the plague, and here I was enjoying them! And hours later, I’m still feeling great. Is exercise addictive? Let me know what you think.

There is actually a scientific explanation for this — some chemicals in your brain are released that make you feel good. It’s good that you’ve hit that spot because that will help you to keep going on your program. Keep it up!

Hey Jennifer, Keep up the good work and will you rub off on me? I do not like to excercise at all but I can really tell a difference in you. You are shrinking all over. Keep it up. Way to go. I am so happy for you. Sheila

Your are really an inspiration! Enjoying exercise? I can’t believe a person who has never had those jock inclinations can actually enjoy exercise. You must have reached some magical point in your physical development. You have given me hope. I am not at that point yet, but I will keep trying until I catch that great feeling that you are describing. If you can do it, I should be able to. Thanks for the inspiration.

“I hate to exercise” is something my brain has been telling me my entire life. I am trying to reprogram my brain to think, “I want to have a healthier life.” But change is hard! I don’t think I have ever worked hard enough to release those endorphins to allow me to experience and enjoy exercise. I do want to- and isn’t that the first step? I am going to start- slowly at first and work my way up. Your commitment and attitude towards a healthier lifestyle is really very inspiring. I think you are also very fortunate to have an experienced and knowledgeable trainer, too. Y’all make a great team!

Keep up the good work, Jennifer! I remember what that ‘exercise high’ felt like. Unfortunately I quit working out for a long time due to chronic headaches, but I’m trying to slowly get back in the game. It will be a long & bumpy road, but I am determined to enjoy the journey anyway!

I definitely think it’s addictive! :) I go to the gym each day during lunch; and by the time my lunch hour rolls around each day, I look forward to getting down there! Congrats on the great job you continue to do! Can’t wait to see some “after” pictures!!!
