Small things add up to big motivation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The other day I walked into my closet and decided to put on a shirt I hadn’t been able to wear in quite some time. I almost got rid of it awhile back because it depressed me to see it and know I could no longer wear it. But it is cute (and still in style!), so I didn’t. Anyway, imagine how I felt when I could put it on and look good in it! Then I got to work and the first person I saw said all my hard work was paying off and I was looking better. Boy, did that feel good. I stood taller and prouder all day! These kinds of things keep me motivated!
This week, I am going to the trainer 4 — count ‘em FOUR — times. Whew! My muscles and heart have never worked this hard! But it feels good. Today Kelly really pushed me to see what I could do, and I feel that I did not disappoint him. He seemed excited about my progress — another motivator!
Soooooooo…. I’ve got breakfast down pat. I’m great on my mid-morning snack. Eat a healthy balanced lunch. Then it’s off to the trainer or to do some cardio. Then home. That’s when things fall apart. I’ve tried eating various healthy snacks at this danger time, but some days, one snack leads to another and then another….you get the picture.
Any ideas on dealing with the “5 p.m.-tired-hungry-gotta-eat-NOW
-but-dinner-is-still-half-an-hour-and-a
-whole-lotta-effort-away” blues?
Thanks for any ideas!

I have been following your progress and I think you’re doing great. There’s nothing like the feeling of “new” clothes that you don’t have to actually go out and purchase. I usually eat some cheese or peanut butter in the late afternoon. Maybe with some whole grain bread or an apple. The fat and protein seem to keep me feeling okay until i can get dinner on the table. Continue to work hard and you’ll do great!

Wow, Jennifer, you are really doing great! I am impressed with your dedication of going to the gym four times a week. This will really pay off in the long run. As far as what to eat in the late afternoon, I would try drinking more water. I certainly understand that tough time of day! Good luck!

Jennifer I am so proud of you. You make me want to get on the ball and get fit. Keep up the good work and you will be so happy with yourself. In the late afternoon try drinking a lite beer. Sometimes when I am cooking I drink a lite beer and it seems to help. It is only about 100 calories and 5 grams of carbs.

Wonderful- What a great feeling to finally start seeing the results of your hard work with looser clothes! You are doing a great job - and it sounds like you are really getting in great shape!
I have a cup of soup to ward off my late afternoon snacking. I make a big batch of it on Saturday or Sunday. It has beans and turkey and other veggies. It’s also low in calories, but a cup really gives you a satisfied feeling so you can better manage what you eat. Keep up your great work!!!

Dear Jennifer,
I am representing 10 people in my office, who designated me to be the one to write to you. We can all relate to the clothes in the closet that we can no longer wear but don’t dare throw away because they represent our hope for a slimmer future. We congratulate and envy you for losing enough inches to wear a shirt from an earlier time. You are an inspiration! We all know what we have to do: replace fat with muscle, and by golly you have made us determined to do it!
I am not a fine example, but I have found that if I drink a real sweet diet drink, like a cream soda or root beer over ice, it takes away some of that late afternoon craving. If I put a couple of tablespoons of skim milk in it and stir vigorously, this concoction turns into a kind of milkshake. You will be surprised at how good it is.
Good luck and keep up the good work. We are following your progress, and it is giving us hope for shaping up our office.

Jennifer - Congrats on getting into a smaller size! Your hard work is paying off.
Regarding the afternoon munchies, soup, fruit, veggies - YES. Beer - NO. It may only be 100 calories but if you are anything like me, alcohol will loosen your resolve in ALL areas including eating.
