Planting Seeds of Knowledge

As I had mentioned before at Inspire Health I not only am blessed with a trainer that is also a physical therapist, but an acupuncturist, massage therapist, and a psychologist.

I am very fortunate for this opportunity. I would never be able to afford all of this assistance myself. The work outs and everything is wonderful, but more importantly I appreciate the knowledge that I am learning.

It is like the old saying, “You can give a man a fish and he can eat for a day but if you teach him how to fish he can eat for a life time.” I am set for the rest of my life as long as I continue to apply the knowledge I have learned to my everyday life.

Sarah explains everything that we are doing in detail: what muscles are being worked, the technical name of all the muscles, why we need to work out the muscles and how working out one muscle can help another. One of my biggest challenges is to breathe while working out. I love that Sarah does the breathing during the work out to help me get in the habit of doing it. This has always been a challenge for me. As much as I talk you would think I have the breathing technique accomplished. Do you have any tricks that can help me to remember to breathe properly while working out?

David has not only educated me on acupuncture and all the benefits you can receive by having it done, but he is exceptionally educated on nutrition. I have taken what he has shared with me and have continued to eat more fruit, more veggies, nuts, water. My third week without diet coke (caffeine) or fried food, I believe I have set a new record in the Kay family. Did you know that watermelon is around 83% water? I did not until David shared his knowledge with me. To continue eating healthier do you have suggestions on how to cook veggies differently (but healthy) so I can keep doing it week after week?

I am a firm believer in my faith that if you can plant a seed in someone it will grow and then they can plant a seed in another. I believe that is what Inspire Health team is doing, planting seeds in me so I can help plant them in others.

Through the AJC blog I pray that I am able to plant a seed in your life! I am typically a positive person, but sometimes it is hard while doing so many different things in my life.

Do you have ways to keep being positive through all the changes going on in life?

Hey,It was good to see you on Sunday. Three weeks without caffeine would kill me. I get headaches if I do not have my fix in the mornings. Have you tried roasting your vegetables in the oven with just a little bit of olive oil, salt and pepper. They retain most of their nutritional value and do not take long to cook. My favorites are asparagus, red peppers and brussell sprouts.

A Kay family first indeed! Congratulations, you are doing so well. Your “good example seed” is growing in our lives as we have been walking and eating stir-fry with veggies and scallops. We’re looking forward to see you and your mother Saturday. Michael and Matthew

Laura,

Keep up the terrific work! I am so proud of you!! As for the veggies, I put spray butter (Parkay) on green beans and broccoli and then top them with a little fresh parmesan cheese. A great way to make a sweet potato quickly is to microwave it for 8-10 mins and once done, open it up and put spray butter and Splenda brown sugar on the inside. I also bake asparagus topped with a little olive oil, salt and pepper in the oven on 350 for 15 mins.

Hi Laura - thanks so much for sharing your journey. Ideas for breathing - do they have yoga classes at Inspire? They might even have a tape that just focuses on breathing exercises. I bet that once the exercises you are learning now become more routine for you, you’ll think less about making your muscles do things and can meditate on your breathing while you are doing them.

Vegetables - another friend suggested roasting vegetables. I do this too, in an iron skillet, 400 degrees in the oven, with sweet potatoes, carrots, garlic, white potatoes. Peel them and slice them up. If you like other root vegetables like turnips or beets, they work well, too. I put in some olive oil, salt and pepper, and a sprig of fresh rosemary (buy a potted one for $5 at Home Depot instead of the cut pieces at the grocery, you’ll use it!), stir them occasionally, and it takes about 30-45 minutes depending on the size of the skillet and how much is in it. Put the garlic in after about 15 minutes - don’t peel the cloves, just throw a few in with the skin on.

I like roasted asparagus with a little parmesan cheese on it, too. The cheese melts and gets crunchy while the asparagus roasts. Parmesan cheese is a good thing in small doses because it has so much flavor, so you don’t get so much fat from it if you are careful and don’t over do it. Get the real stuff and a grater, it’s worth it.

Also, I have a sauteed cabbage recipe that’s great - I’ll scan it and email it to you, but it’s basically cabbage sauteed in a little butter/olive oil with italian seasoning, then add some parmesan cheese and sliced toasted almonds after it’s cooked. Yum!

Keep up the good work Laura! My favorite snack after work is a cup of frozen seedless grapes.

Larua, keep up the good work. You’ve come so far already. You are inspiring a lot of people (and helping them realize that diet coke isn’t next to air and water in importance!) Thanks!

Laura, you are planting God’s seeds all over the place. And you continue to be such an inspiration to so many people. As far as breathing, your trainer is much more of an expert, but I would suggest exhaling during each repetion during your workout. And regarding ways to stay positive, I would suggest just resting in The Lord. Remember, Jesus, said “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you” (John 14:27). Matthew 11:28-30 is also very comforting. Keep up the great work, and may God continue to Bless you in this journey.

Laura:

You’re making great progress through your first few weeks…and those are the hardest because they are the days you’ve spent having to change your old habits. You’ve done that, and now you just need to keep using “Baby Steps” (thanks, Bob Wiley) in order to get towards your goals. God is helping and will help you in the pursuit of your goal. I know you rely on Him, and He will help you get through the tough days, which always seem to come at bad times.

Keep His faith in your workouts and you will continue to have amazing results.

Best—

Jay
