Are You on a Diet? Then Read This…….
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My current bedtime reading is You on a Diet by Michael Roizen, MD and Mehmet Oz, MD. I have been a fan of Mehmet Oz for sometime and couldn’t resist picking up his new book. While I am only in the first chapter, I can already recommend this book to each of you.
First, I like it because it is NOT a journal article and secondly, because I am inspired by it. My education provided me with a working knowledge of the digestive system and the guidelines for a healthy diet, but I certainly am not a nutritionist. And I am human, with cravings, secret chocolates stashes, and a weakness for cheese.
So I really appreciate the approach the authors take in educating the reader about how our bodies work, why we have cravings, what food does for our bodies, and empowers us to respond with reason and elegance as we go forward in our lives and “diet”. But really it is not about going forward and “dieting”, it is about knowledge influencing every choice you make about food and choosing a healthier lifestyle because you know the effect it will have on your body and life.
Overweight, underweight or just right, this book is a MUST for every adult.

Since I embarked on a low carb/good carb diet 4 years ago I feel better, have NO food cravings and don’t miss the high carb crap. I eat less meat and more veggies, and prepare foods fresh. If I eat bread it’s only a couple slices a week of pumpernickel or whole wheat. No white bread, rolls, cake, cookies, potatoes, or rice. If I have pasta, it is whole wheat and enriched, and one portion only with lots of veggies. I read labels and reject anything that has refined flour, added sugars (especialy high fructose corn syrup), salt, and preservatives. I eat cheese, lower fat and one portion only. I use butter occasionally, one pat to sautee along with olive oil. I eat chocolate, Perugina bittersweet has only 1.5 carbs per little square, and a couple of squares satisfies my taste. I drink water, tea or coffee, and no soft drinks. If I have a cocktail I drink the clear alcohols and no sugar mixers. I don’t drink beer or wine either. When you cut the sugar and added stuff out of your diet, then fruits and veggies taste much sweeter and are entirely satisfying. Sugar is addictive, and if you wean yourself from it along with the other additives, you will feel better.
