Protesters hold anti-stimulus “tea party” at the Capitol

Hundreds of people gathered in the pouring rain at the state Capitol to protest the multi-billion dollar federal stimulus package signed by President Barack Obama.

Protesters chanted, “Take back America,” and held signs against bailouts. Another protester held a U.S. Navy Jack with the rattlesnake and the words, “Don’t Tread on Me.”

Protests across the country have sprung up today, inspired by Rick Santelli of CNBC, who stood on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade last week and went on a spontaneous on-air rant against Pres. Obama’s proposed mortgage bailout. Santelli mentioned holding a tea party to protest the idea, like the Boston Tea Party, when colonists protested unjust taxation from England.

The idea has taken a life of its own, and Friday, about 200 protesters showed up in Atlanta, some with tea bags, to protest the stimulus bill and other bailouts.

“My concern is that this country is going down a dangerous path toward socialism and that’s not what my forefathers, or my ancestors, fought and died for,” said protester Allen LaBerteaux, 41, of Lilburn. He had two tea bags in his pocket.

The state employee went to the Capitol in the cold rain to register his opposition to the stimulus bill, which he sees as irresponsible spending by the federal government.

Supporters say the $787 billion stimulus package is designed to jump-start the economy with public works construction, new jobs and tax cuts for millions of Americans.

Protesters at the Capitol handed out One Trillion dollar bills with the faces of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada).

State Republican politicians lined up to speak in the rain, including gubernatorial hopefuls Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and Rep. Austin Scott (R-Tifton).

State Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) also spoke, urging the crowd to find socialists in office and “kick them out.”

“Let’s go after them,” Rogers said, to cheers from the crowd.

Everything negative about Obama has nothing to do with him being black, he is a liberal socialist that believes in Marxist government. This country was not founded on communism, and with the trillions he is going to spend on social programs, which already have failed more business will either shutdown or move overseas.

This guy has not ever made a budget for anything except now. Oh his home fiscal budget.

we are not heading toward socialism. we’ve been there for years. of greater concern should be the realization that the free market/capitlism experiment has failed. the Constitution has been hijacked by special interests via the politicians they buy. silly pep rallies and the ranting and name-calling of talk-radio entertainers do not address the true essence of problem. of course Obama is a socialist… so was George W. Bush. until Americans hold elected officials accountable (as the lobbyists and ownership class do) taxpayers in ALL income brackets will pick up the tab.

“Take money from a black president”? What alien species exiled you to planet Earth?

It’s the scoundrels Nancy “Hack in the Box” Pelosi and Harry “Land Baron” Reid that are taking trillions from US and using it to enlarge their own federal empire.

I’m so tired of people trying to make current political issues about race. The race of the president has nothing to do with my opinion about his plans. This is about socialism vs. capitalism, not black vs. white.

AMEN, Lets make sure European socialism doesnt rear it’s nast head in the United States. The best solution for a recession is TAX CUTS NOT GOVERMENT SPENDING. The only sector that created jobs and performed well in the final quarter last year was the small business sector.

America is the land of oppurtunity not the land of big government and welfare. “free” healthcare run by the same people that have ruined stocks is not a smart idea. The quality of care will take a nose dive and waiting time will go sky high.

My grandfather fought for this country in WWII, my dad did the same in Vietnam, and I’m in my final year at N-Ga military college. After I complete my degree I will serve to pay for my school and I pray that this socialism is not what I will fight for. Our previous generations didnt fight for this and they and we deserve better.

I WOULD HOPE THAT YOU COULD TAKE 2 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME AND GO TO NELP.ORG DATE OF 02/23/2009 I THINK THAT ALL CITIZENS OF GEORGIA WOULD RATHER CHANGE A FEW EMPLOYMENT LAWS THAN SEE AMERICAN CITIZENS AND THEIR FAMILIES BE THROWN TO THE STREETS FROM HOMELESSNESS AND POVERTY. I AM GLAD THAT YOU HAVE OBTAINED A SECURE JOB AND MOST EVERYONE IN YOUR IMMEDIATE DAY TO DAY ROUTINE DOES ALSO. BUT FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY AND THE SAKE OF THE INCREASED GEORGIA UNEMPLOYMENT RATE MOST PEOPLE WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS MEANS TO A JOB. SURE IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN YOU CAN GET A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY EACH MONTH FROM TANF AND FOOD STAMPS AND MEDICAL. BUT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE CHILDREN YOU WONT EVEN GET THAT. I’m not in this tax bracket, but find it troubling. In addition to raising taxes on people who make more than $200,000/year, Obama is making it impossible for them to write off taxable donations. This will undoubtedly cut down on direct donations to charity from wealthy people. Obama’s budget guy said that they would make it up by giving to chairites from government money. So you are no longer allowed to pick which charities you support, or don’t support, the government will now do that for you. That rubs me the wrong way.

Here we go with the race-baiting again. Bush spent BILLIONS not TRILLIONS and people didn’t kick up a fuss becuause most of it went to defending against terrorism. Or did you forget that we don’t have twin towers in NYC anymore Ameer? I got news for you pal it takes money to defend a country this size. Or any country for that matter. And maybe you’d be OK with loosing most of your freedoms that soldiers live and die to protect but I’m not. Obama and the Congress are rapidly pushing Socialism down everyone’s throat and I for one don’t want any part of it. But hey, if it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside to have the president sign into law excessive spending bills that your children and possibly your grandchildren are going to be paying for down the road. by all means promote your point of view. The difference between the spending that Obama is doing vs the spending that Bush has done was that Obama’s spending is helping you and me. Bush’s spending only helped big oil, Iraq, and pharmaceuticals. So when these folks go out protesting like idiots, i’m sure they will be the first to jump on the jobs wagon when they can be gainfully employed a direct result of the stimulus deal. I know a bunch of hillbillies who voted for mccain, but are trying hard to get a job and cannot wait for the OBAMA stimulus plan to kick start. Why don’t these morons protest BP, Shell, Phizer, GE and other companies who got the most corporate welfare over the past 8 years? Oh, they create jobs I see. Our economy has posted a net job loss over the past 8 years. yes, companies got tax breaks and continued to send jobs to China and India. Protest that!

It’s called inflation guys… Obama thinks everyone making over 250 is SOOO RICH. But if he takes the current level of 34% (still too high) and raises it to 39-41% you can kiss a good portion of small businesses good bye and the jobs they supplied as well. My dad is a dentist and he is in this “rich category making right at or slightly above that magic number. What some people don’t consider is my dad pays malpractice insurance (very high) , regular insurance, office supplies, medical supplies, employee healthcare, utilities on the office, PAYROLL for the employees, and several other fun charges like advertising, and the office note… So when you consider all of those charges he isn’t so rich anymore and he still has to support a family and pay his own bills. If he is forced to pay even more than he already is he will have to cut 1-3 jobs and raise his prices to stay above the water. This means even if you aren’t “rich” everything you buy from a business will be more expensive and inflation will be at levels never before seen.

Lower taxes not government spending is the answer. How come I’m in college and I have this figured out but half of the country is asleep at the weel?

And Bush did not spend this kind of money in his first term with his Republican house and senate. Most of the hikes in spending came post 911 when we started fighting the war on terror and rebounding from attacks that affected the economy as well. Bush did let DC get to him I think in his second term however and did make some unnecessary spending. But WOW Obama makes Bush look like a stingy kid with his allowance. This is a sad day for America and I hope and pray we make it to 2010 when the fiscal conservatives will make a comeback and restore free market capitalism.

P.S. You noticed what the stock market does every time Obama announces more bailouts or spending? They know what he is doing and that’s why the stocks are tanking. Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax which means after you already pay your tax the rate you pay again will go up on your stock meaning NO ONE will invest because the profit margin will tank. I guess we are socialist now

Fellow Americans- Lets Take Back Our Country For everyone fed up, let’s do something about it. What should we do? Well, this is what I did:

1.) Signed up on resistnet.com- the Patriotic Resistanance to the Obama administration (a peaceful group that openly rejects the plans of his administration) Remember STRENGTH IS IN NUMBERS….screw if you are a democrat or a republican. Let’s fix this great nation.

2.) Credit lending is not a problem. I work for a builder and I see plenty of mortgage applications still being approved. We DO need regulation on unworthy borrowers.

3.) We need to buy products made in the USA. We need to DEMAND govt quits spending but regulates our to make sure we are creating jobs in the US with manufacturing again

4.) Listen, if it’s broke, fix it. Again, whether they are republican or democrat- if they are in office and have been they are either a part of the problem or not strong enought to fix it. We need to replace the current elected officials.

Listen, the government is FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE.

Seriously, we need to stand up for the constitution and our God given rights and liberties. Come on Americans- let’s do this! Let’s get our nation back on track for our children and their children. Please act now before it’s too late.

I find it very interesting that no one can see that our economy is almost at a standstill. Do they propose that we do nothing and just let the country fall into chaos. I don’t like spending but I also don’t like tax cuts/credits for big companies that just turn around and layoff employees. Even small companies feel the pain, example just this morning, a major craft basket maker in Ohio said it was laying off 500 employees. Thats a lot of families hurting in that one community..should they hold a tea party.

What people don’t understand is that the Federal government is made for this very need - the spender/buyer of last resort. The Feds are the only ones that can break the cycle of people not buying because they got laid off from the company who could not get enough customers to make a profit/pay staff.

You can have your tea parties and say the word socialism as much you like but I bet you if one of these individuals lose their family’s only source of income or savings they will be the first ones asking the Feds to please help them.

FACT: Past political policies have put this 30 day old President in the bad position of having to fix this mess with more spending…if you did not protest the former President/Repubs + some Dems who drove us into this hole..dont protest the one person who is trying to help pull us out..no matter the size of the tow truck.

Conservatives call it redistribution when it’s money going down, but not when it’s money going up. Like when the big corporations got the tax breaks under your old president bush..The ones you so vehemently supported. He took your money and basically allowed the big companies to keep their money only to redistribute it to china and India in forms of investment. Oh, and how about he took your tax dollars and send it to Iraq? Ever think about that? That is redistribution. Also, I am a successful business owner. I don’t mind paying a higher tax rate to be in America. I know only in America I have the opportunity to be as successful. I know I couldn’t have amassed this fortune in Poland or Russia. I owe it to my country to pay my fair share in order to allow others the opportunity to do the same.

I guess those who disagree with Ameer have’t read the news lately about all the death threats Obama received. You can’t speak for anyone but yourself…no one else! Barak Obama is a supreme narcissist. Obama’s language, posture and demeanor, and the testimonies of his closest, dearest and nearest suggest that the Senator is either a narcissist or he may have narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Narcissists project a grandiose but false image of themselves. Jim Jones, the charismatic leader of People’s Temple, the man who led over 900 of his followers to cheerfully commit mass suicide and even murder their own children was also a narcissist. David Koresh, Charles Manson, Joseph Koni, Shoko Asahara, Stalin, Saddam, Mao,Kim Jong Ill and Adolph Hitler are a few examples of narcissists of our time. All these men had a tremendous influence over their fanciers. They created a personality cult around themselves and with their blazing speeches elevated their admirers, filled their hearts with enthusiasm and instilled in their minds a new zest for life. They gave them hope! They promised them the moon, but alas, invariably they brought them to their doom. When you are a victim of a cult of personality, you don’t know it until it is too late.

The narcissist shapes the world around himself and reduces others in his own inverted image. He creates a cult of personality. His admirers become his co-dependents. Narcissists have no interest in things that do not help them to reach their personal objective. They are focused on one thing alone and that is power. All other issues are meaningless to them and they do not want to waste their precious time on trivialities. Anything that does not help them is beneath them and do not deserve their attention.

If an issue raised in the Senate does not help Obama in one way or another, he has no interest in it. The “present” vote is a safe vote. No one can criticize him if things go wrong. Those issues are unworthy by their very nature because they are not about him.

Today the Democrats have placed all their hopes in Obama. But this man could put an end to their party. The great majority of blacks have also decided to vote for Obama. Only an idiot does not know that their support for him is racially driven. This is racism, pure and simple.

Obama will set the clock back decades… The peace of the world depends on the strength of America, and its weakness translates into the triumph of terrorism and victory of rogue nations.

It is no wonder that Ahmadinejad, Hugo Chavez, the Castrists, the Hezbollah, the Hamas, the lawyers of the Guantanamo terrorists and virtually all sworn enemies of America are so thrilled by the prospect of their man in the White House. America is on the verge of destruction. There is no insanity greater than electing a pathological narcissist as president.

I wish I’d known about this, I would’ve been there! I’d never cared much for politics and government my whole life, but the last couple of years I have been shaken to the core. I’ve done massive amounts of research and what I know now is that we AMERICANS, black, white or purple striped, Democrat or Republican,…have been asleep at the wheel and have allowed this corrupt system to take control. It is quite rotten from the ground level to the top. Gov’t expansion is NOT the answer. Dont believe me, go do your homework and discover the answers in the history books. Hey, you’re online now killing time, start googling to learn how the Great Depression happened. Then get back up and fight for your rights back!

Ameer is wrong with the race baiting but right on premise. Georgians didn’t protest Bush’s off the handle spending that even Jindal said was irresponsible. For the genius that said they didn’t protest because it went to fight terrorist as a result of 9/11, You were lied to! Bush admitted he lied to us! He fought Iraq because he felt like it, we ll know good and well Iraq and 9/11 are not connected.

I know that many are hurting right now. Many, if not most, who read this have no real stake in the game. You have no savings, are under or unemployed, have perilous levels of consumer debt, and might be looking at a forclosure. But this craziness from Obama is not the answer. Doing away with the mortgage interest deduction and the deduction for charitable contributions for the “rich” will just give way to doing away with it for everyone. Obama is enacting some very scary things, and do not discount his two lunatic sidekicks (Pelosi and Reid) This is not a race issue at all. Colin Powell and JC Watts have been popular figures in government (mostly with whites). I understand that these are tough times calling for tough measures, but destroying our nation and the opportunities that it was intended to provide is not the answer. I hope that this is not the end of the United States of America as we know it and as it was meant to be. Frightfully though, I believe it just may be. May God Bless Us All!!!

Big whoop…which does these people want us take back - Real America or Fake America? Feel disenfranchised you must, protesters, but don’t pretend that the stimulus is socialism. I’m starting to line my cat’s liter-box with your conservative talking-point mailings. What about all that greedy de-regulation that helped send our jobs overseas in the years leading up to the stimulus? Give the President a chance before harkening back to the American Revolution. Sure they paid high taxes back then, but early Americans sure did have free slave labor and little to no government services. They SHOULD have been mad. But today, now that we expect the government to do so much with so little, how else do you propose we pay to fix our problems?

Funny, Bush runs up a 1.75 trillion budget deficit, Obama is trying to fix Bush’s mess and now you dumb s** want to protest. But yeah go ahead and tell me Bush spent it fighting terrorism and the misguided Iraq war where kids are dying for no damn reason. Go ahead and ignore the billions in tax breaks to his boys at Exxon. What a dumb state.

You have got to be kidding!!!! I thought we elected a new president in in November? We now have a president who is giving us the full picture and not hiding spending, torturing POW’s (yes the people held at Guantonamo Bay are POW’s just like John McCain), bringing the government into the 21st century with the rest of us and creating jobs that people can pay their bills with and not just say they “have” a job and have to leave that one and go to another on to make ends meet. Before he can een begin to really build he has to clean up the HUGE mess that built up during the last administration. Go home and sit down….you and your followers will benefit from what is being put in place. If you want to march, go to Charlotte and find out why the Bank of America chairman is still riding on a private jet at $5000 a pop but not working with individuals who are in or may be going into forclosure.

February 27, 2009 5:02 PM | Link to this

I guess we are socialist now

dondee, Bush didn’t have a plan when he entered office. He helped his buddies get rich…I am curious to know how many of the people who are so against helping other people and calling President Obama’s plans as socialist make over $250K per year? Are you ok with paying off the idots on Wall Street but not help the people have worked hard and now don’t have jobs because of the problems that have come from the Bush Administration.

Most independent economists do not support a stimulus package like the one just passed. They know that this “package” is going to have a greater adverse affect on the future than if the economy were left to repair itself.

The fact is that when an average person makes a mistake in their finances, they pay for it directly and hopefully learn not make the same mistakes. This is called having “consequences” for your actions. Where are the conseuences when someone bails you out? How do you learn from your mistakes if there are no consequences?

I am fully aware of the ripple effect when large corporations have problems but didnt they all bring this on themselves and by bailing them out arent we just prolonging the problem? Take GM for instance. They have not had an original idea for a vehicle in decades. They produce poorly made automobiles. They let the UAW push them around. They make bad investments. They over-pay their employees and managment. Now they are burning through government cash (your and my money) at a record rate without fixing anything and they have the balls to ask for more. Well wouldn’t you if someone were foolish enough to give it?

I say let GM file bankruptcy just like any citizen who get’s themselves in trouble. Let GM fix their own problems or let them go under. We live in a free enterprise system (at least for a little while longer) where companies survive by having a quality product to sell. Let GM downsize and let GM design a quality product that people want to buy at a price they can afford and let GM tell the UAW to take a hike…this will solve their problems better throwing money at them.

And then use this model on all the other companies with their hands out..this is the real and right way to stimulate the economy.

It boils down to this - 1.)Race will always be an issue in America because neither side will let it go. 2.)Everyone that is bashing Obama - You’ll scream Socialist and how unjust you feel your tax dollars are being wasted, until you lose your job. You don’t want to be part of the stimulus then do not file unemployment. Easy as that. 3.) Stop Hiding behind Bush “defending” our country. Killing Bin Laden would have shown the world to not mess with us. Invading Iraq just showed the world we serve our own interests. Bin Laden = Hitler - once the person responsible for pulling strings was gone things changed (See WWII) Terrorism = Communism - See how well the “War” on Communism went in Vietnam? History has shown that wars on Ideas never end and usually are lost causes (See Vietnam or for you ultra conservatives see the Crusades) Imagine if FDR had to put up with todays America - with all of the bickering, name calling, and general BS that we have today - would we have ever got out of the Great Depression?

EVERYONE! JUST STFU AND GIVE THIS A CHANCE!

OH WAIT! Lets declare a WAR on this recession! Maybe then you guys will at least give it a chance before crying about it!

From the NEW DEAL

Treasury Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, angry at the Keynesian spenders, confided to his diary May 1939: “We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. And I have just one interest, and now if I am wrong somebody else can have my job. I want to see this country prosper. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises. I say after eight years of this administration, we have just as much unemployment as when we started. And enormous debt to boot.”

Many economists, including Nobel Laureates, argue that neither the war nor New Deal policies ended the Great Depression. Rather, a return to normality after the war, as the government relaxed wage controls, price controls, capital controls, reduced tariffs and other trade barriers, and eliminated the rationing of goods and the relaxing of Federal control over American industries, ended it.

So spending didn’t work?

You can tell the young age of some of the commentors on here. The would rather agitate than fix the problem. Woe to our future. These young people and the “never voted before” blacks that voted in Obama, will wake up and realize one day what they did to our nation. I hope it is not too late. He is inexperienced and follows Pelosi and Reid and does their bidding.

You know we are heading for bad socialism when Putin says: the US should take a lesson from the pages of Russian history and not exercise “excessive intervention in economic activity and blind faith in the state’s omnipotence”.

“In the 20th century, the Soviet Union made the state’s role absolute,” Putin said during a speech at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “In the long run, this made the Soviet economy totally uncompetitive. This lesson cost us dearly. I am sure nobody wants to see it repeated.”

Are you serious? I’m so sick of people saying “backwards South” “rednecks” “whitey” and all the other crap. This protest was one of many - NOT just in Georgia. And YES we DID protest BUSH on the last bailout. I work for a “Wall Street” company and have been against EVERY bailout because it’s wrong! I didn’t vote for Obama, I didn’t vote for McCain - but as an American I hope and pray that Obama will do what is needed for this country. So far, I have been disappointed. The bail-outs, the time limit on the vote, the excess spending, the tax hikes - these are not signs of a “transparent” government who has the American people in mind. Something needs to be done, yes - but we HAVE to make sure that we are doing the RIGHT thing and that takes time. We HAVE to succeed - otherwise I hate to see what will happen to us all. Poor & rich. And the last time I checked this was America. Land of opportunity. I’m not in the high tax bracket - but isn’t punishing people who obtain that destroying our freedom to explore our opportunities? That’s not the America I want. Americans can’t sleep anymore - we have to wake up & take back our country and our freedom!
