House panel approves Ga. Power bill
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A House subcommittee has given preliminary approval to a bill allowing Georgia Power to begin charging customers in advance for the cost of future construction of a nuclear power plant.
The House Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications panel approved SB 31 in a voice vote.
The bill, one of the more controversial pieces of legislation this session, now moves to the full committee.
The subcommittee heard more than 3 hours of testimony over two days before sending the bill forward.
The utility wants to construct a new nuclear plant near Augusta. It is seeking permission to begin charging its costumers now for the expected costs of that construction.
The legislation seeks to bypass the Public Service Commission, which ordinarily would have the power to decide the issue.

this is representative of how the republican led government of this state continues to disregard the rights of its citizens. It is in complete violation of our rights to be able to fight for fair representation. This is why the rest of the nation voted for change…but georgians are too stupid and bigoted to think rationally and recognize when their own government services the wealthy and powerful and not the people of georgia.

I cannot believe that the people of Georgia are willing to sit still and let this go through! I’m outraged that our elected representatives would try to charge the people of GA for energy we haven’t used yet. We are in a recession right now…we can barely pay for what we have, much less pay for the construction of a nuclear reactor…they need to get it from their funds…sell bonds.

This is abosolutely ridiculous. To think that they would charge customers in advance, for something that isn’t even built yet, and isn’t set to be built until the near future. But you know what, this doesn’t surprise me. Georgia’s politics are all screwed up. From the Governer, all the way down. With a southern mentality that’s been around for a few hundred years, it’s obvious that this government is still pulling tricks out of its old book.

I will fight this increase to the Supreme Court if I have to. I refused to pay for someone’s pipe dream! No one in this state has shown me that they have the mentality to house a nuclear plant! I WILL NOT PAY FOR YOUR DREAM!!! I WILL SEE YOU IN COURT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You people are crazy. It is time to impeach some officals. Let’s start at the top and work our way to the CEO’s.

It’s “pay to play” under the Gold Dome, folks. Our elected officials can’t bring themselves to rein in title loans, but Georgia Power and its 70 lobbyists get whatever they want, and quickly.
The members of the Public Service Commission should hang their heads in shame. The legislature cuts back their power to serve as watchdogs on Georgia Power, and they say nothing. Pitiful.
