King portrait action delayed
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A proposal to hang a portrait of Coretta Scott King in the state Capitol could come up for a vote in a House committee as early as next week.
A vote was scheduled for today, but it was canceled after Rep. Roberta Abdul-Salaam (D-Riverdale) didn’t show up to present the measure at a House Special Rules Committee hearing.
Committee chairman Calvin Hill (R-Canton) said Abdul-Salaam left a telephone message for him this morning, saying she could not make it to the hearing because of an illness.
The committee “very likely” would have passed the resolution had Abdul-Salaam showed up to present it, Hill said. He added that he might schedule a new hearing for the bill next week.
Abdul-Salaam’s resolution calls King a hero who “played a leading role in advocating social change across the nation.” The measure calls on the Capitol Arts Standards Commission to authorize hanging a portrait of her on the second floor of the Capitol building next to one of late husband Martin Luther King Jr.
Similar legislation died in the House last year after critics raised concerns about hanging portraits of people who are not elected and not from Georgia in the Capitol building.

Hanging portraits in the State Capitol should be restricted to elected officals only.

We don’t need a portrait of a “PROFESSIONAL MOURNER” honored in the State Capitol. How about a portrait of the widowed mothers of the Vietnam Veterans who were killed in the war and never received one one millionth (%) of the support that Coretta so aptly parlayed over the years. Remember, she wasn’t the only one to lose a loved one during the 60s!

By yeah, I know: I’ve got it. Rename all “Peachtree” to King What should we remane Atlanta, King Town? Suggest a law be passed that all office buildings hang King portraits in the lobby. Name each airport terminal after a member of the King family. Name all state, county and city buildings after the Kings. Name all over passes and bridges for the Kings. Should “Georgia” be “Kingdom”, I would really like to see the state flag. Stupid, aint’ it. The King family does need to be reconigized, but not everywhere and every place.

The Legislature is correct to reject the King portrait. The only places such a portrait should be are in a museum or in a relative’s house. This state does not need to be seen as a backwards state. We need to advance; not live in the past.

Coretta Scott King is no more a “civil rights icon” than the Tooth Fairy. Other than “representing” MLK and the King family from the day he was killed until the day she died, what did she personally do to further any particular causes? Her primary cause was herself. Her children have demonstrated the same flawed character trait as she since her death, only in more pathetic and grotesque fashion. If Atlanta ever builds a civil rights museum, then a portrait of Mrs. King might be appropriate there. Otherwise, let the King children finance a portrait and a place to hang it in the meantime. They have a few million dollars laying around after having sold their father’s papers, the most blatant display of greed one could possibly fathom. BTW, I would love for one person to tell me what the King children have done with their newfound millions to further any civil rights or social injustice causes?

Which certainly exlains why the State Legislature wants ‘Confederate History Month’

The King family does NOT need to be recognized. Martin Luther King DOES not to be recognized. The family is an embarassment to a great man.

As ALWAYS in these AJC blogs, NO MATTER THE TOPIC, the ignorance & racial hatred of GA residents NEVER FAILS to show it’s ugly head. ‘You guys’ have the same old agenda, spew the same old rhetoric, have learned NOTHING from history and therefore, will CONTINUE to always make the SAME mistakes. It’s no wonder this state seems FOREVER stuck in the slow lane of forward thinking progress.

Yeah…so we only want to reserve portrait hanging for politicians? Right…
I’m not saying that I necessarily agree with King’s portrait…BUT why only reserve portraits for the corrupt dumb a* self serving scum bags of the Georgia legislature?

I want to hang portrait of my parents as well. What did they do? They did like a lot of the older citizens, they paid taxes year after year after year after year after year. The were just as important to Georgias as was Coretta. Did she work and pay social security taxes or just draw a salary from MLK? Food for thought.

I am totally against of hanging her portrait in the capitol for what she hasnt done anything but pimp Dr. kings name all the years. She is not the only civil rights widow what about juanita abernathy her and Dr.ralph stood by Dr. king.So when Juanita Aberthany dies will she get a chance to hang in the corridor as well. I am an african american male i am not racist or bias i just feel she dosent need it. 6 hr funeral for what she didnt need a big mess and show.Every african american with a name think they are entitled to have their name in big print light. Honestly you dont see the minority race doingit.

I am not sure what a “hater” is. Sounds like your definition of a hater is someone who thinks that the King family were a bunch of mercenaries. I have bad news for you—-they were a bunch of mercenaries.

Mrs. King was an outspoken champion of many causes and groups and certainly is deserving of the respect and admiration many feel for her. However, why should her portrait be in the Capitol? Rosalyn Carter is the wife of a former Governor and President AND has done so much good in the world, but I doubt anyone will propose hanging her portrait in the Capitol. It seems to me that the Capitol should be reserved for portraits of those who have served in the Capitol — meaning Governors, Lt. Governors, State Senators and State Representatives. Any other commemorations or honors, no matter how well-deserved, should be located elsewhere, otherwise the Capitol will eventually be nothing but a portrait gallery of famous Georgians. Who is next? Bernie Marcus? Ted Turner? P. Diddy?
