House approves Zell Miller statue
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The House of Representatives approved a resolution today calling for a statue to former U.S. Sen. Zell Miller on the State Capitol grounds.
Backed by several House Republican leaders, HR16 urges the Capitol Arts Standards Commission to move forward with the project, calling the Democrat “one of Georgia’s most distinguished native sons.”
“The time is right,” state Rep. Ben Bridges Sr. (R-Cleveland), who sponsored the resolution, told the House this morning. “I know of no one who has done more for the people of this state than Zell Miller.”
Bridges joined other representatives in honoring Miller’s service to Georgia as former state senator, lieutenant governor and governor. And they cited Miller’s efforts to establish Georgia’s popular pre-kindergarten and HOPE scholarship programs.
Miller, who also served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor and governor, is a maverick Democrat who endorsed Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue for governor in May over Democratic Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor.
Miller angered Democrats when he spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2004, accusing the Democratic Party of moving too far to the left and blasting presidential nominee John Kerry as incapable of leading the war on terror. Miller also supported many of President Bush’s initiatives and published a book in 2003 that criticized the Democratic Party.
Several top House Republican leaders sponsored the resolution calling for Miller’s statue, including House Majority Whip Barry Fleming (R-Harlem) and Rep. Jay Roberts (R-Ocilla), chairman of the House Republican Caucus.
Yet, the resolution received bipartisan support. House Minority Leader DuBose Porter (D-Dublin) rose in support of the measure on the House floor.
“It is appropriate at this time,” Porter told the House, “to give him the recognition that his life work deserves.”
The resolution passed on a 153-3 vote. The follow representatives voted against it: Joe Heckstall (D-East Point), Jimmy Lord (D-Sandersville) and Alisha Thomas Morgan (D-Austell).

Well, visitors to the State Capitol with their dogs, will have something NEW for them to relive themselves on.
Next to “ZIG ZAG’s” Statue we should place one for “AX HANDLE” MADDOX his former boss and “RED SUSPENDERS” GENE TALMADGE. We then can rightfully call it “Johnny Reb Row”!!!!!!!!!!
As a 5th generation African-American georgian I have never heard of something so stupid as this! When I try and think how far this state has come, them something or someone reminds me how far we have to go.
What about an appropriate statue to honor the first group of African Americans State Legislators to serve under the Dome. This would be too much to ask for only 137 years after they were elected, Sorry!

Movement is under way to remove the name McKinney from road way. All over the USA you hear of people being disgusted when someone acts up after building, road, park is named after them. SOLUTION is simple-do not name anything after a person. If you want to honor some one, make statue of people going to work or how about statue of people in post office night of 4/15 filing tax returns. Nothing should be built, named or erected in honor of a person.

zell miller was the greatest governor georgia ever had.
the passage of the hope program which he created has benefitted all georgians who did not have the means to get a college education.
he also took the state to another level with unpresented economic and job growth.
he is very deserving of this honor.

Make sure the statue is realistic…veins popping out of his forehead, a crazed look in his eyes, and a direct quote that makes no logical sense at all such as “The reason I’m still a Democrat is kind of like having a relative that lives in your basement that you don’t want to kick out.” Yes, he really said that. And as a native Georgian, I can tell you the only real difference he made was with the HOPE scholarship. Other than that, Zell was pretty short sighted and has since supported nothing but Republican backed policies. He made Georgia a laughing stock at the 2004 Republican National Conference but he received a lot of support from those who don’t know any better.

I went to college on the hope scholarship and I really, really appreciated it!! This waa an excellent move by Zell. He has complained about the Democratic party and he was justified in that. But I am confused as to why he has not complained about the Republicans. I still don’t think this warrants a statue

We have more important things in Georgia to spend money on, not some statue of a another politician. These people get plenty of the publics appreciation with their BIG FAT pension checks from the government. When will our Government ever learn we don’t want them to pay tribute to themselves, we want them to pay tribute to us, and do what’s right for all of us, not just a select few.

If a statue of Zell does make it to the capital grounds, surely it will be cast with him wearing his “turn coat”. I always thought of Zell as an opportunist rather than a Democrat or Republican and he proved me right by switching his allegiance to the popular party of the time. Zell is as fickle as the wind blows and his proposed statue should also have a wind vane on it’s head to allow him to swivel and zig zag into the winds of time. He will reverse his whole train of thought once the Democrats win back the Presidency, Governorship and State House. He may well be dead and buried by that point in time however!

Why do we need a statue for Zell Miller. That will cost the tax payer more money for something you can’t eat or sleep in. There is so much more you can do with that money. Lester Maddox was a distinguished native son of Georgia and he got was part of a bridge named after him. So lets give Zell a Street. That should be good enough.

While I’m no fan of Senator Miller and think he has really done some serious damage to his reputation with the hateful rhetoric and tone of voice he has used (particularly when campaigning for President Bush), I think it is fair to recognize that Mr. Miller did start the HOPE Scholarship program which was the model for the national program initiated by President Clinton. He also did serve as Lt. Governor for four (?) terms and as Governor for two terms, and in the US Senate, so it’s hard to argue he hasn’t served his state well. We can’t all agree on every honor that is given to someone and have to accept that sometimes someone whom we are not a fan of is going to receive some recognition. To think otherwise is really indicative of having a very small world view. Having said that, I have heard that he is a TERROR to work for.

There is a road named after Zell, it is up in North Georgia where 575 ends, it is called the Zell Miller Parkway and I believe there is a statue there already that we taxpayers have paid for. Tax cuts, educational scholarships, new highways…Zell was a good governor. He truly cares about Georgians. I think the negative comments you are reading are from those that weren’t strong enough to rise to Zell’s challenge to reinvigorate the Democratic Party…to bring back the principles of Wilson, Roosevelt and Kennedy.
It’s much easier to cast the stones than use them to build the foundation of a modern political party. Sadly, most miss the point that Zell will always be a Democrat; he just wants the party to be the powerhouse it once was.
Erect the statue and inscribe this on its base: “To my fellow Democrats, if you wish not to be judged, remember these words…to avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing”.

These conservative republicans and their perverse ideology of inequality and rights only of their kind, can save taxpyers money to build yet another useless piece of junk statue of a Hillbilly, two bit bigot, that did not know his a* from hole in the ground. Better yet would be to put a Uniform on him and send him ti Iraq to to fight the war, that he so much likes and advocate. In fact all the politicians that voted for the mess and are now out of office, before they become lobbyists, as patriotic Americans should join the military and fight for the freedom of the country. The SOBs did nothing much when they sat on their fat asses. Zell will be better off if the rednecks would put him next to Lee at the Red Neck Park.

As a life long Republican, few things make me more proud than to look at the opposition party and identify those I respect and admire. May not always agree with him but he merits respect others do not. Zell had the guts to put America over his party. The rest of his party, for the most part, followed the mantra afraid to act with their own brains. As for a statue at this point, let’s be careful how we honor civil servant least we have another Cynthia McKinney embarrassment.

I think he was brave enough to stand up to a party that changed for the worse and has become too liberal. The democtratic South that he represented for so many years is not much different in ideals as the new Republican South. We all lived and survived the race issues. It’s time to move on - even in politics. The new Democtratic Party that he blasted is our own resident Socialist Party. Democratic ideals don’t work just like socialism doesnt.

fulldawg-Your comment on Zell being responsible for raising teachers’ salaries is very misleading. Teachers got almost nothing in his first term and the good raises in his second term put Ga. teachers slightly ahead of when he came in. Georgia teachers fell about 15 places during his first term at a time when Ga. was positioned much better to raise salaries than the rest of the country. By the way, when Zell endorsed Bush he bragged about having voting for Dems since Adlai in 1952. Couldn’t of happened, he wasn’t old enough! But of course Zell gets a free pass on this.

Only Zig-Zag Zell Miller can go from giving a good speech at the 1992 Democratic National Convention to embarrassing our state at the 2004 Republican National Convention. As for his “civil rights” record, please note that it is the sons and daughters of the old dixicrats and segregationists who are very happy with his latest flip-flop. (Note that republicans use to hate him.) BTW I wonder what he has to say about the latest mid-term elections-especially on the Congressional level.
Well, I guess will have to get ready for further embarrassment for our state.

I believe this is a GREAT idea, and one well deserved for the job Zell did for us in the State of GA.

MORE WASTE OF TAXPAYERS MONEY, I CAN THINK A BETTER WAY TO USE THIS MONEY, IF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WANT HIM TO HAVE A STATUE, THEY SHOULD PAY FOR IT.

No more or no less, this Republican led effort is another rub the nose of Democrats. Georgia need its leaders to get off the revenge kick and get about the business of growth.
A review of the many and varied foregoing comments reveal great passion. However, when you get beyond the smoke, as I have in my objective assessment of Zell’s political career, you’ll discover it’s been more about fluff than substance.
When you get beyond HOPE and Pre-K, and its questionable about whether he deserves all the credits he gets for those, Zell did not leave Georgia in great shape upon exiting the Governor’s office. He left a billion dollars of Georgia earmarked federal transportation funds on the table because of his failed policies. For the first time federal monitors came in because of his juvenile justice policies. His criminal justice policies were an abysmal failure. His small thinking “build more prisons” created an industry that has done nothing to reduce Georgia’s crime rate. Yes, he increased teacher pay, which was good, but because of limited vision or small thinking he did not tackle other parts of the education establishment neccessary to positively impact student performances.
Bottom line, go beyond the fluff and you will learn as I have, “Zell is the great Pretender.”
