nursing home costs

Lawmakers are about to pass a bill that would allow the elderly to get state-supported nursing home care while hanging onto up to $100,000 in assets. Currently, the law is $25,000, and state officials say they will aggressively go after the assets of seniors to pay for their nursing home care. Critics say old folks wanting taxpayer-supported nursing home care could lose their homes. So, should the state be trying to recover the assets of the elderly to pay for their nursing home care, or should they get to keep up to $100,000 in assets?

There is bill in the senate that will probably replace the one mentioned above. The estate of anyone currently on Medicaid cannot be touched regardless of the size. Only people who sign up for Medicaid after this law passes will be subject to having their homes taken by the state. That seems to be more fair as there are some people on Medicaid in nursing homes who were not informed that their houses would be taken when they passed away. The state is bad about changing the rules in the middle of the game.

People who went into nursing homes were never told about losing their homes, obviously people who are on Medicaid are the lower income, but most have worked hard all their lives, paid taxes, some served their country, why take away everything they have, they are only getting $30.00 a month out of any income they receive and that certainly does not go far. Their social security and any pension checks go to the nursing home. If we cared about our people as much as we seem to care about other countries, our system would not be in such a mess, I do believe in helping other countries, but help your own first.

We are not talking about estates of the wealthy, we are talking about the estates of hard-working, mostly lower middle-class Americans. They were the back-bone of our country, many fought in WWII and are responsible for the success of some of this country’s biggest companies. If we can’t respect them enough to leave their estates in tact what have we become? If some protection isn’t passed, I’m afraid many of these people will die in their homes, not seeking care rather than give up the little they have to a government more anxious to fund foreign interest instead of it’s own people.

Jane you are so right! Add to that that lower income families can not pass along any wealth to their heirs. This aspect is part of the poverty cycle and may create more poverty.

I agree with you all of you, it is not right for our elderly to stand a chance of loosing everything that they and there four fathers before them have worked all thier lives for. Like Jane said the nursing home elderly are the the ones who played a large part in making America what it is today and the State of Ga needs to do right by ALL of them. We need to remember that this generation of folks are the ones that lived threw the depresion, went to battle in many wars so that this we today our generation could have a better life and live in a free country!!!

It is not fair for the elderly to have to pay anything back. If any program is going to be changed lets change the low income medicaid and TANF. These programs are helping those people who can work and wont. Most elderly people have worked their whole life for what they have. Also to nursing homes already take their social security check. Somebody needs to do something about the nursing homes taking advantage of these people. Should it cost 2000 dollars or more a month to take care of someone?

Why can’t we give the elderly a break? They’ve worked their entire life and now one has to go into a nursing home, so you take the home away from the spouse? Just let the oil companies pay for it, they’re making all the money? Why does the government aways attempt to turn the common people against each other, when they are the real root of the “evil” and “greed”? Republican or Democrate, it’s two heads of the same BEAST! It’s time for a party that’s “really” for the people and not special interest. Come on people, what are we waiting for?
