We set up a system to recycle the water from our washing maching. Since our laundry area is right next to our garage, my husband cut a small hole in the wall and put a hose from the washer discharge to a 55-gallon plastic barrel. We put a small submersible pump in the barrel to pump the water out through the garden hose. I get between 35 and 50 gallons of gray water from each load of laundry - my roses and perennials are very happy! Total cost - about $50. One caution - only use clean (not gray)water for food gardens, which are currently exempt from watering restrictions.

I planted rose bushes and2 gardenia bushes in my flower beds. Help! The roses look relatively healthy but have absolutely no buds or flowers although they had a few when I bought them from Walmart. I did prune the old blooms when they turned brown. What should I do to make them healthier and encourage them to bloom.

The gardenias have several buds on them but after about 4-5 weeks in the ground they have not bloomed and they are looking positively sickly. My soil is red clay, but I used miracle gro garden soil mixed in with potting soil, and little of the red clay, on all of the plants.

The maters in the back seem to be okay. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
