Falcons quietly make moves

The two latest signings haven’t been big names, but as one blogger pointed out in D. Orlando Ledbetter’s blog, http://tinyurl.com/b9p3oa, the Patriots built a winning tradition by signing little-known players that made them into a winner.

Michael Turner is a prime example of a little-known player who made a huge difference in the Falcons’ success last season.

Mike Peterson (above) could be an impact player, but I expected more of a youth movement when filling the linebacker spots left behind when Brooking and Milloy left. The Falcons need quickness at linebacker. They need to get pressure on the quarterback or be able to cover quick receivers or backs. That didn’t happen last season and it killed the Falcons.

Brett Romberg sounds like he could help the offensive line, but my question about the O-line has to do with Sam Baker. Hope he’s 100 percent and will actually make a difference this season. He was a huge disappointment last season.

Go Falcons!

So, we release a slow 12 year guy and sign a slightly less slow 10 year guy. Is this going to significanly improve our linebacking corp? I doubt it…but we will see. The only positive is that he knows “the system”.

As far as Sam Baker being a “huge disappointment” last season, I would beg to differ. Baker had a positive impact when he was healthy. Don’t know if his injury situation is a sign of things to come, but for a rookie the kid did well when he played.

It remains to be seen if he comes back healthy and ready to go and if he does I expect him to pick up where he left off and do a great job. But, if he doesn’t, then he will be a “disappoinment”. Give the kid a chance.

I hope sam makes it this year. Your right bird babe, last year was a dissapointment. He was figured to be a big part in what they wanted to do on offense, but spent half or more of the season on the bench. He will get another chance this season, but if he continues to be injury prone, he will fall out of favor with the falcons and the fans he has left very quickly.

Everybody needs to quit comparing the Falcons to the Patriots. The Patriots are winners, big difference. As for Sam Baker the jury is still out on him.Looks like the Falcons are going to go with the cheap approch and not spend any money in the Fa market witch means an inferior team on the field for the next few years but we’er use to that right?I have been a fan since i was 21 years old. i am now 63 years old nothing ever changes. same old falcons.I should know right?

People seem to forget Atl did want to resign Brooking but not at the 8 million dollar mark, and he declined to take a pay cut. We got Peterson because Brooking decided he wanted to leave. Bill, the Patriots did the exact same thing we are doing now before they made their Super Bowl run. Can you name more than 5 or 6 guys on the Patriots that beat the Rams to win their 1st Super Bowl with Brady as QB? Brady wasn’t even a star. Atl is doing it right. You allow you draft picks a chance to play. If we went every offseason doing what the Redskins and Raiders do none of our draft picks would ever see the field much less develop

Let’s see, at LB we’ve got Peterson, Lofton, Nicholas, Wire, oh yeah and that guy that Lofton JUST BARELY beat out to start MLB last year, Tony Gilbert. Either Peterson or Gilbert could occasionally spell Lofton at MIKE. Peterson could start at WILL and Gilbert would do much better that Boley at SAM. Next move should be to sign Roy Williams and Orlando by God Pace!!!!! Nothing against Clabo, but he is no Orlando Pace. Justin Peele will do just fine at tight end. Any move at that position would be spinning wheels and wasting opportunities. At CB, David Irons time will come.

Tony Gilbert wasn’t in training with us last year. We signed Gilbert right before the beginning of 1st game against Det. It was Tony Taylor you were referring to. Orlando Pace? I’m sorry but Orlando Pace isn’t the same Orlando Pace. I’ll keep Clabo. I liked David Irons but not as much as you do.

Oops! You’re right, Terrell. Got my UGA Tony’s askew. He’s still projected at strongside by the team. 6′0″ 248. Wish he were a little taller for strongside, covering the tight-end and all. Orlando Pace on the downside is still better than most who ever played his position. If he’s a bit slower, then keep him on offense where he doesn’t have to chase anyone down. I’d keep Clabo, too. A good solid lineman with fresh legs. Whatever happened to Tony Taylor anyway?

One, Peterson is going to start at WEAKSIDE…not strongside.

Wire and Nicholas will fight for the strongside spot.

I think peterson was a great pickup. He knows the system…and has the caliber to be a playmaker. Plus, you have to admit it’s an upgrade from ANYONE we would’ve been starting at weakside.

At THIS point, you’ve got to be a bit disappointed at what our defense is looking like. We need desperate help in more than a few areas. We lost foxworth, i’m guessing jackson/grimes will step in to his spot. Milloy is gone…and that’s the most glaring weakness as of now, SAFETY. We need help on the D-Line with Jackson’s departure unless they plan on giving davis/babineaux those spots (but it still doesn’t hurt to have depth on the line to keep them fresh through the year). I know it’s still early, we still have the draft to look forward to. 7 picks in 6 rounds. Most of which will need to be impact players their rookie seasons. WE WILL SEE - GO GETTEM TD.

Our most glaring weakness is SOLB. We have 4 guys versitle enough to play both saftey sports, but we only have Wire at the SOLB. Everyone wants Cushing, but I put my money on Laurenitis. Same size, same speed, better hitter…

Sorry this is a change of subject but i’m feeling the draft this year. I think TD and mike smith are focused on what we need to make our team younger and faster and the way to do that is the draft. Sure we could have gone after TO, Haynsworth, TJ Smith, and so on but why? Old men with big heads and big pockets to fill. We have a ton of spots to fill but guys we all knew that this was going to happen and that it would take years to build a team that had a shot at a Super Bowl. Many doubted Ryan, and most did not know Burner Turner besides a back up to LT, but yet in December I saw my team duke it out and almost win against a team that ended up playing pretty well in the SB. Last year the organization knew in order to put butts in the seats the birds needed to put points on the board. They re-did the dome, got ryan to throw, Baker to block, and Turner to run. Our offence got us the the PLAYOFFS!!!! Don’t forget that most people only gave us 4 to 5 wins last year before the season started. Now we can really have some fun with the team. We will dabble with a TE position to complete our passing offence for now. Here come the Defence. New, young, explosive linebackers will be selected and I have a feeling that our protection against the pass will impove 10 fold. Who cares who we got rid of this year our defence was 23rd. I felt good when the offence was running down the clock and began to grind my teeth when the D ran out and lined up. With the exeption of Foxworth I say get rid of our 23rd ranked D and re-build b/c it sure worked well for our offence. Weak D’s don’t win the big game….well with the exeption of the Colts amazing offence / weak defence superbowl victory a couple of years ago; the stats show D wins games. The Ravens, Steelers, Bears (80’s), and so on. Also if we can get rid of vick and snag some picks it will only speed this process up. Remember Don’t count out vick. He might be a ** head but he was explosive and did take us to a NFC Champ game. So if the raders, 49ers, vikings, jags, cheifs, rams, or whoever give us picks for him I see that as a victory on our part. It only takes one team to decide that an explosive player will fit their system and vick more then likely is stronger and bigger then before prison. The government tends to provide yoga classes in prison… I mean free weights and lots of fending off boy friends. Last little note the cards have a great offence but a crap mild mid level D and it got them there but did not take them all the way. I say top off the Falcons offence with brandon petagrew TE so matt ryan has another target and do what we did with the offence last year to the Defence. Give TD a chance to do his job and also don’t forget the Mike Smith knows defence. I got Faith let the old birds go and bring in the new.

why are people on michael vick the way they are?mike is a fine young man who made a mistake. JESUS said he who is without sin let him cast the first stone. we all have come short of GOD’s glory. we all have sinned in our lives. we are in no position to judge someone else.the falcons would be wrong to give up on the young man. give him another chance.SUPPOSE God would not have forgiven us at points in our lives when we made mistakes.?let help vick to get on with his life and stop burying him daily.give him another chance.THE FALCONS WOULD BE FOOLISH TO GIVE UP ON HIM.
