Brooking is a Cowboy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m a bit surprised the Cowboys signed Brooking to a 3-year deal. Good for Brooking. From Blank’s comments, it sounds like the Falcons really tried to keep him.
I still think he deserved to finish his career with the Falcons, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Foxworth and Boley will be missed, but Brooking poured his heart and soul into this team and could be tough to replace in the locker room.
Let’s see what the Falcons can do in the draft and with free agency. It’s been pretty quiet so far.

Babe the length of the contract is irrelevant. He can be cut at anytime. Players rarely stay for the entire length of a contract especially at his age. Brooking could get cut in training camp and wouldn’t be owed a dime.

Keith Brooking was once a feared linebacker in the league, but now he is slow and not getting any younger. Sentiment is great in matrimony, but shouldn’t play a role in building a winning NFL team.
I am amazed that people actually want to disrespect the judgment of Thomas Dimitroff. The Falcons went from a pathetic team in 2007 to the playoffs in 2008. GM Dimitroff was the architect of the player moves that got us there.
The Falcons still have the prospect of Mike Vick’s 2009 potential $9,000,000 salary clogging up their salary cap. Relax and let Dimitroff, Mike Smith and Company work the free agent market. Sometimes the lesser known free agents, with lower salary demands, sign after the initial rush and are the best value for the dollars to stay under the salary cap.

A big hearty congrats goes out to Keith Brooking and family. I’m glad to see he can go play somewhere with true fans who might appreciate him a little more. I’m sick of reading all of these Vick lovers’ comments on these blogs, anyway, who seem to want to blame him for all of the Falcons’ defensive woes this year. They seem to forget the many Pro Bowl years and the fact that he CONSISTENTLY lead the team in tackles during his tenure. I think we’ve either got Yellow Jacket haters or people that just can’t get behind a white LB on these blogs. I’m sick of it and am glad we won’t have to deal with it anymore. The guy had a down year, not nearly as down as folks here would like to believe, and all we hear about is how he cost us this game or that game!! Give me a break people. Our defense had more holes than swiss cheese. And I’m not exactly sure how we’re gonna field a team next year with all of these departures. But I do have faith in Dimitroff.. And as a lifetime FAlcons fan, I’m happy for Brooking as well and am confident he is gonna send a message in big D to all of the morons on these blogs.

Good for you Mr. Brooking. I hope you have a great career in Dallas. Maybe you will get to shine against your former team and I hope you do. The Falcons and the fans of this state never realized what they had in you. You were great on the field and off. Best wishes to you!

Wow, Falcon’s Brethren, I know we need to get younger, faster and better on Defense, but it’s gettin’ a little scarey losing one defender after another with several Falcon FAs still unsigned. I trust TD & MS though. They must have a serious revamp plan for the D that they feel confident about implementing. I just want to see a couple of solid free agents sign with the Falcs so we can get the ball rolling. Sean Jones out of Cleveland would be a good place to start. Hope Brooking has a pro bowl year, but looses to the Falcons. Thanks for everything, Brook.

Good luck, Keith. Thanx for the productive years. May you find invigoration in your new venue. Now my main concern. I knew the Falcons weren’t going to be aggresive in free agency, but…geez, I’m starting to worry! Is anybody going to be left on the market when they finish their coffee?

To local yokel, I don’t think its disrespectful to comment on or question the moves or lack of moves that a GM makes. I’m sure that Dimitroff realizes his work is nowhere near finish. The Falcons have had winning seasons in the past but what they have not done however is been able to put winning seasons back to back. Last years decisions panned out very well for the Falcons… maybe too well. This years offseason moves will really tell us what Dimitroff has under his cap. We have lost 5 starters and yes I know some of them needed to go but the free agent moves and draft moves he makes this year will tell us alot about his skills as a GM. So while I appreciate what he has done to this point I am not ready to sing his praises just yet and if you can’t handle fans questioning his moves then that is your problem because we will continue until the job is done.

Where are all those punks who have been saying KB56 was worthless and nobody would offer him anything…thirty six hours into free agency he gets a 3 year deal worth more than the Falcons were offerring! LOL. Where’s the vaunted Lawyer Milloy’s deal? I hope Keith finds some real football fans in Dallas that will appreciate his talent and that he comes back for his induction into the Falcons Ring of Honor.

It is so sad. You mention the guy leading the team in tackles. The worst defense in the league has somebody that leads the team in tackles. For the money he and his agent request, there is no way they can make that happe. When good teams know your weakness, they take advantage of it. I wish him the best of luck, But I am glad he is gone.

Keith Brooking should’ve been able to finish his career as a Falcon PERIOD!! I love the new management of the Falcons, but I am a bit dissapointed with this decision to let him go. I do trust Dimitroff and Coach Smith, but they should’ve allowed Keith to retire HERE and not Dallas. I understand that Dimitroff says that the Falcons weren’t going to make any decisions that were emotionally driven, but this one is a head scratcher. Brooking is an ATL sports icon and he should’ve beenable to retire a Falcon.

Keith Brooking was not let go, he voided the remainder of his contract and refused the offer that the falcons submitted and decided to test the free agent market and ended up in Dallas. Do you think he should have been able to demand the amount of money that the falcons would pay him???

As Scout.com first reported several weeks ago, Brooking had the ability to void the final season of his four-year deal as long as he played in 35 percent of the defensive snaps in any of the first three seasons of the contract. Brooking, according to a league source, notified Atlanta of his intention to void the 2009 season earlier this week

I’ve remained a loyal Falcons fan since moving to Fort Worth TX three years ago. This Falcons move has just given me a reason to actually watch the Cowboys. I really think Dallas is going to gain lots from Atlanta’s loss. While I hope the Falcons can sign someone to fill Brooking’s shoes, the past has not made me overly confident that this will happen. I think the Falcons will ultimately miss Brooking more than he misses them.

Not trying to change the subject just update Falcon fans on rumors I am reading on the internet in a couple of places. I’m reading at an SI link that Falcons and TE Smith of Philly are near terms. Waiting to see if our AJC has info. Anyway I will remember Brooking as a player who never dissed Atlanta or the Falcons thru bad owners, bad coaches, bad team mates ( Hall, Vick ) and lean years.

Dimitroff aka Lyle Lovett needs to start moving some checkers here.. He gets a free pass given the incredible job he did last year. But are we even going to be able to field a team on D this year? I’m okay building through the draft but you can’t exactly count on rookies comin in and contributing in their first year.(Lofton and Ryan were exceptions rather than the rule) Our D is shaping up to be a scab team. I wasn’t a big fan of our D, but some of the players we’ve let go were real contributors. And I think its a little ironic that Van Gorder isn’t getting more heat if we’re sending the whole D out to pasture. It seems people are raving about him, which may well be the UGA bias. But lets not forget that he leading the troops over there.

My Cowboys made the biggest mistake of the offseason signing this never has-been. I can guarantee you jock-sniffers that he will never step foot onto Dallas’ new field because he will be exposed early in training camp for what he is…an over-hyped marketing tool for a deep south fan base. Demarcus Ware, the leader of our defense, demands that the defense is stout and with Brooking it will be a sieve. Zack Thomas will be missed because he was a PLAYER. He actually made plays in the hole or the backfield. This 20 yds down the field tackling will not be tolerated. HE WILL BE CUT and he’ll feign some injury. So save your tears. He’ll return soon and be inducted into your ring of BUMS.

Look forget Brooking!! We lost two young talented players in Boley & Foxworth. Now the DB core is that much more thinner with the absence of these two “young” players. I understand this new regime thinks they have it under control or “following the process” but when you have young talent you do your best to keep them. Look we have lost the speedy LB Demorion Williams (last year, 5yrs exp) and now we have lost Boley (4yr exp). I hope we are not deciding to play more rookies this year because that will make last years record look like a dream. I hope somebodys paying attention.

Keith Brooking will excel in Dallas and be in the STARTING line-up in 2009.
He is a class act and a superb football player. Many of the ignorant morons on these blogs will not be man enough to admit they were wrong about Brooking (or about the way they have treated him)…….they will eventually know in thier hearts that they were absolutely wrong about Brooking! He will have atleast 1 very productive year in Dallas; he probably has 2-3 good years left in the tank.
He still has the skills to be an every down player. People who say he is slow are simply idiots; he is still as fast or faster than many/most of the rookie LB’s coming out of college => including “super stud” Lofton who disappeared after the first 3 games of the season. He is intelligent, durable, dedicated, fast, a great role model and he ALWAYS gives his best effort.
If you watch the tape, most defenses assigned an offensive lineman to engage Brooking on running plays……..if he was not a factor (as soooo many of the Brooking haters would like to believe), WHY did the opponents obligate a key resource on Mr. Brooking??????
He is probably the best player to ever play for the Atlanta Falcons; if he is not the best player, he is definitely in the Top 5. I must say, Matt Ryan might develop into the best player to ever wear an Atlanta Falcons Jersey!
Keith Brooking will most definitely sign his last contract with the Atlanta Falcons simply to allow him to retire as a Falcon. LET US ALL SHOW A LITTLE CLASS AND RESPECT WHEN THIS HAPPENS. Any unbiased observer would, without a doubt, come to the conclusion that Keith Brooking has represented the Atlanta Falcons well and been a solid contributor on and off the football field.
I would like to see him come back to Atlanta as a linebacker coach after his playing days are done; but why would he want to play or coach in a city which has soo many ignorant/negative fans??
I can only hope these fans will become more realistic over time (I realize this is probably an unrealistic dream) and show a little appreciation and class.

The fans here are just not used to sound decisions. No player we have lost is going to hurt that bad. I liked Foxworth but not at 7 million a year. You’re joking right! He’s three years older than KB at 36 and had something like 30 less tackles last year….he’s been outright released by a divisional rival…but, yeah, he’s the ticket! He does have that one desirable “trait” that most Falcons fans are looking for….LOL

Some of you on here are just drop dead hilarious. Really…no1 said he’s meant nothing to this franchise other than a handful of people. We all appreciate what he’s done for this organization…but really…there comes a time when it’s time to PART WAYS!!!!
Those of you talking about “look how quick he got a deal”…who cares??? Look who signed him? How have the cowboys offseason moves worked out for them in the past couple of seasons? By the way…Mike Vick will be a free agent soon - are you telling me if he gets signed within “36 hours” that we should’ve held on to him…?
Personally…im glad to see him go. He’s clearly lost a step…and he was nothing but mediocre at weakside LB. He wasn’t ever going to get his original spot back at MLB because of Lofton’s emergence. We need to focus on the FUTURE of this team…not people who had great careers for our franchise in the past and got us 0 titles. Really…the way some of you guys sound about “being a fan” makes me want to see Jamal Anderson and Chris Chandler out there again…
Let old washed up people go… Get fresh young faces in…
And lets build a young Defense to go along with our Young OFFENSE - - superbowl will be within reach in the next couple of seasons…

@ GT GRAD, I agree with alot of what you had to say.People should remember that Brooking was good for a really long time, and should not just remember him for the 3rd and 16 play in Arizona. He will be a good fit for the Cowboys, and he should be able to help control TO somewhat, as he is one that will challenge stupidity and arrogance. I had hoped that he would have returned at a reduced price. I believe TD is clearing space to get Roddy White resigned during the season, and doing the same with Jerious Norwood. Our Defense is clearly not as good right now, but it will be much younger and with room to improve. Unfortunately the 15 million Cap hit Vick’s salary will have on the team will only affect us for the 09 season. After that the Falcons will be a serious contender from that point forward for several years to come.

I cannot understand all the misbelief, by so many on this blog, second guessing the Falcons with the loss of Brooking in Free-Agency. i am sure glad that these folks that believe Brooking should still be here, are only expressing their views, and none of them will have any influence on the Falcons come draft day. The fact that the falcons were negotiating with Keith tells me they wanted him back but in a reduced role, which his ego would not allow him to do. I do not expect Keith to last more than a year in Dallas, despite the 3 year deal. Dimitroff did say that he would not allow his decisions to be emotionally driven which is so good for the Falcons. The GM and Coach last year say the building of this Franchise is a work in progress, and each process must be carried out in order to continue building the Franchise and putting the best team on the field. I am going to be leaving it up to Tom Dimitroff and I think you all should do the same and stop the craziness. Never mind all the money spent by the Redskins and Cowboys they are the Yankees of the NFL, and despite their free spending every year, they have no more trophy than the Falcons to show over the past 10 years. A player getting the big contract in FA does not make him a beter player after the signing, he is still going to be lazy and take times off., and the Corner is still going to get beat.

The problem with Falcon fans is everything is Black & White. 90% of you are fans of certain players not the Falcons team as a whole.
There are Vick fans who are mostly Black (but not all); and there are Brooking fans who are mostly White (but not all).
I read these boards and see the read subtle racism between the lines; Vick vs non-Vick fans and Brooking vs non-Brooking fans.
We all are going to like and dislike certain players for whatever reason…that’s our right. But players come and go on Football teams…Crump, Dunn, Vick (his own doing), and Brooking.
NO ONE is above the TEAM! When they start to become a liability instead of an asset it’s time for them to go.

Rico , I used to be a Vick fan and I have never been a Brooking fan but I will give him credit because he gave it all he had. He is not the hall of famer everyone thought he would be. You are wrong about the 90% of fans liking certain players and not the team as a whole. It may be 5 to 10%. I don’t give a dang about the players skin color, I am falcons fan period. And by the way it don’t mean crap but I am white.

Everyone ages. I ain’t the man I used to be. Brooking isn’t either. He’s getting by now on heart and intelligence, not on athletic prowress. I watched a sports show the other day that showed Ray Lewis and how he wasn’t the player he was just a couple of years ago. It showed video of how he was too slow to run down RB’s like he used to. quite revealing. Hats off to Brooking for being a great Falcon.

Keith Brookings never played behind dominating defensive linemen. In his prime he played out of position and never complained about it. He went to those pro bowls for a reason. A very good line makes the rest of the players look great. That stands true for offense and defense. In Brooking’s prime he was very good with little help up front. Before you start sreaming about Abraham, he is great pass rusher but was not even an everydown DE last year. Patrick Kearney was great against the pass but not feared against the run. I said dominating D-linemen who demands a double team on run and pass plays. The Falcons have had some good linemen but not the great line as a whole. Ray Lewis best years were played behind a great line. McCrary, Saragosa, etc…, Good Luck Brooking to me you will allways be remembered as the last link to the Greatest Season in Falcons history, for that you deserve respect. A True Soldier. Out of respect I will not express my disdain for the Falcons in this post.

Falcon21, you are one of the few in that 10% of fans who care about the team as a whole and not certain players. I’m not trying to point any one particular race out…it’s just an observation I’ve made reading the various blogs. Those who read my initial post knows what’s in their hearts and motives for posting certain things on these boards. It’s almost like a t**-for-tat back and forth calling each other out about why this person stinks or doesn’t.

Did anyone see Dallas’s defense play last year? Of course they’re going to jump on a FA who led their team in tackles. They need someone to come in and teach that defense how to tackle, even if its downfield! May as well be KB.

Anyone remember when Vick broke his ankle and he took his time getting back in saying he didn’t want to endanger his career? Brooking broke a bone in his back the same time as all this was going on AND DID NOT MISS A GAME! No we don’t need players like that on our team , do we?

Hey Y’all:
I agree this is a business. Kieth Brooking will always be remembered as a great Falcon, however, Ibelieve it was a good time for him to move on. He still has some football left in him, but I believe the Falcons are looking for someone a little more aggressive and nasty at that position. They do not want a nice guy. They want a game changing player. I am confident Dimitroff is being very careful in looking and selecting a free agent or a draftee to fill the void. In all, the Falcons will be better with the change.
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN!!!!! TELL EVERYBODY!!!!!!!

Nobody has explained our loss to the Cards in the playoffs last December to my satisfaction. What happened? Is it crooked, and fixed by the Russian Mafia, as I suspect? Or is Blank a natural born Cooler?
Anyone.
