Defense hurts Falcons

Disappointing game against the Saints. The Falcons kept answering when the Saints scored, but the defense couldn’t stop Drew Brees and the Saints offense all day. There were too many big runs. No pressure on Brees whatsoever.

Matt Ryan came up with big play after big play all game. Thought he rebounded from the interception and had an awesome game. But he really needed to get that first down late in the 4th. That one hurt. Really needed the defense to step up, but they just couldn’t stop the Saints, again.

Nice throw by Ryan and catch by Finneran on the TD. Roddy had some great catches. Loved how Ryan was rocketing those passes in between double coverage. This guy’s special.

This should have been a win. Ryan, Roddy and Jenkins played well enough to win. They can’t play defense, too. The defense really hurt them today.

Go Falcons!

Ryan, White, and Jenkins played great games today. The running game was severly lacking today after the first drive. And not to state the obvious but we really need to address the d-line in the off season. Disappointing loss but we still are in good playoff position if Cowboys lose today. Go Falcons!!

Game On The Line..A Needed Conference Win..DEFENSE Choked!! I Blame The Last Offensive Series On The Coach..Sorry A** Play Calling..Trying To Eat The Clock Up With A Long Sustained Drive!! NOT Once Did They Throw A Pass Of 20 Yards Or MORE!! Not Once Did They Try For The Touchdown!!

This Was A Winable Game Up Untill The Last 4-5 Minutes..EVEN Though We Made Way Too Many Mistakes—Penalties..Interception, Etc..We Just Did NOT Play Our A Game Today!! If We Don’t Improve Our DEFENSE..Tampa Bay Bucks..Will Kick Our A** Also!!

I’, black and here are my thoughts.

The way the defense was playing and as hot as Ryan was we should have gone for it on 4th down. Mike remains a bit too conservative. This KID Ryan is an absolute STUD. I knew he would be good but considering his age I would not trade him for any other QB in the NFL. Believe right now he is one of the top 3 or 4 QB’s in the league. Next year this team needs a tight end, corner back, linebacker and defensive tackle

Smith played to lose by punting on that 4th and 5. You HAVE to go for it in that situation. No ifs, ands, or buts.

The Falcons aren’t really turning it over much this year, but they really, really aren’t taking it away. Boy, could’ve used an interception or two today. Giving up that 88-yard return and being unable to get a stop at all in the second half killed us. Oh well, on to the next game.

Alabama had the same situation at the end of the AL-FL game yesterday, went for it , and didn’t make it. However, nobody questioned their call, because it was the right one. Smith is showing his rookie experience as a head coach, and hopefully next time he won’t make the same mistake. The defense is the weak link on this team now, and all future offensive decisions should take this in accord.

This one REALLY hurts bad! The defense except for Abe & Maybe Chris Houston, should be ashamed of themselves!! I am past disgusted with J. Anderson & have reached infuriated! The guy plays so soft, it is just maddening! We let another no name RB literally run all over us, this is like a bad dream! Where is Michael Boley??? We all know Brooking isn’t going to stop anyone…Abe has no help whatsoever, it is the same every week! Great job offense, I was so absolutely thrilled for Finn that he caught that fade route TD!!!!! Too bad we couldn’t pull it out & make it a perfect day for him. I’ll be at the game next week, I am confident the results will be different than today! We now know what Dimitroff’s goal will be next offseason, Defensive end and maybe special teams return guy as well. Just crushing when we allowed that big special teams return. I knew we wouldn’t come back from that. Oh well. Hate when we lose, it stinks all week long.

How can you rely on your defense who has played horrible all game long to get the ball back for you in the final minutes of the game. GO FOR IT with 4th on 5 at the end of the game. Put the ball in Ryan’s hands to win the game for you. More times that not he will, the defense will not. First really bad coaching call all year long though.

Matt Ryan is G R E A T !!!! Defense is still a work in progress - Tough game today - Receivers are getting better each game - Yes, U got to go for it on 4th and five with around 3 mins remaining - That was the game… I’m proud of the Falcons win or lose….We need to win 2 of the last 3 and we’ll make the playoffs

By cp

Yes not going for it was very questionable. The defense was pretty bad all day so I have no idea why you would rely on them stopping the Saints. Ryan looks great though. It’s going to be tough to make the playoffs but even if they don’t, this season has been a success in my eyes.

By GT Guy

What happened to the defense? Why in the world did we not go for the first down on 3rd and 5? We had not stopped the Saints all day long what made the coaches think they could stop them with 5 min and 2 timeouts? Horrendous coaching. No take that back, STUPID coaching. Took away a chance of winning. If Babinaux catches the easy int-game over. Too many mistakes. Special teams were a disaster. Saints wanted it more.

Ryan is going to be simply outstanding - already is and what happened to our running backs today? After the 1st qtr seemed like they were running to the line of scrimmage and stopping.

Not sure we have the right combo for the playoffs this year, but we can hope.

4 late plays caused the birds to lose this one. 1. the 88 yard return. 2. Boley not intercepting that pass. Our linebacker play is terrible. They seem like they are trying not to give up a big pass instead of “making a play” that was an easy interception if he wanted to “attack” the ball. 3. On our last 3rd and 5 play Ryan missed a check down to the running back that would have been an easy first down. And not going for it on 4th. It would been a higher percentage play than counting on our D for a 3 and out. Even if unsuccessful if we held N.O. to 3 we would have had a chance to come back and tie. 4 of our 5 loses have been so frustrating because they could have been W’s.

The Falcons offense is now about to face top ten defenses in the Bucs and Vikings. I didn’t realize how bad some of these defenses were that the Birds have played this season…hopefully the experience will prove fruitful…..however, we know the Vikings game may as well be marked as a loss. There will be no last second 46 yard sprint unless its Adrian Peterson’s.

The defense needs upgrades at defensive end opposite Abraham, also need to get Brooking out of the lineup, ‘cause he’s always chasing and never stopping anybody. Head coach should have gone for it on the fourth and five!! The D hadn’t stopped the Saints all day!!

Too bad that RYAN is the BEST play caller on the team.

You gotta go for that first down. The Falcons couldnt stop the Saints ALL DAY. What made Smith think they could stop them with 3 mins left????

Good News: Ryan is amazing and gets better every week.

Bad News: I am beginning to question the O-coordinator’s AND the D-coordinator’s abilities.

Bye bye playoffs! A legitimate playoff team defeats the Saints in a must-win showdown. Keith “No Tackle” Brooking continues to kill a pathetic Falcon defense! This guy is a complete oxygen waste! Always out of position. Cannot cover an elderly one-legged woman in a damn wheelchair! Hey Mike “Settle For A Field Goal” Petrino! A word of not-so-friendly advice. When the Falcon defense cannot stop the Quincy School Of The Blind all f+cking day do not punt the ball in the final minutes and allow them to run out the damn clock. F+cking idiot! Matt Ryan did okay but his misfire to Finneran cost the Falcons the win. The Falcon runners f+cking gave up! A totally pathetic uneffort in such a critical matchup. Do not get me started on the Falcon unspecial teams! Somewhere a dog killer thug is smiling. F+ck you Falcons for allowing him to do so. Heartless curs! I guess 8-8 is not too bad for apologists. I just got done watching my team play for the first time, since I’ve been on deployment. I’ve been keeping up with every catch, tackle, or throw by the Falcons and I’ve been impressed so far! I actaully saw Matt Ryan with my own eyes today and I cant believe he’s a rookie! But Defense needs a serious upgrade. To have any luck for the future, T.D. is going to have to make some decisions about our defense. Yeah we should have went for it on 4th down but defense should have played better! Keep up the good work Matt and the rest of the offense, we’ll get em next week!

All you mutts give Brooking a break. I saw him chase down a running back this afternoon and make several tackles. Last week he played a heck of a game. Yes he may have lost a step over the years but he has been consistent and leaves it on the field every week. 5 time pro bowler.

You don’t see him taking himself out of the game like some of the other higher profile players, or whinning to the press.

This may be his last year, I don’t know but I do value his contribution to the team over the years. THWG

What a terrible, dissapointing loss. For the offense to have played so spectacularly at times with astonishing plays from Matt Ryan, Brian Finneran, Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, and Harry Douglas all for nothing more than another L in the Loss column. The defense took 20 major steps back compared to last week and special teams looked especially bad with that last Saints return. I guess we are still alive for a playoff berth if we find ways to beat Tampa and Minnesota (it will tough) and keep hoping Washington and Dallas lose some more. All that is a tall order though. Losses hurt a lot more this season. Tomorrow we will go from 2nd place to 3rd place so we can fight our way back to 2nd next week.

Relax, its always tough to win on the road, especially in the NFC South. I think we will bounce back and beat Tampa and if not, I think what the team has accomplished this season is beyond what we all expected in July! I will say I was a little disapointed in our LB play today. Boley has really struggled in this system.

By Kudzu

December 7, 2008 5:07 PM | Link to this

50 is the only LB I would keep. Get rid of ALL the rest. Boley and Brooking haven’t pi**ed a drop all year.

Need at least 2 cover guys and a (stopper) at tackle, 1 defensive end, and please get rid of that slob (Grady Jackson poor excuse for an athelete).

However, if the year ended right now…I would be thankful. Rebuild the defense.

The game came down to the 4th down with 5 yards to go. Not enough time left on the clock for a punt with the hope of stopping an offense that our defense hadn’t prove it could stop! I was screaming at the screen, “Don’t punt!!!”. Then, I hoped it was a fake punt. And, then, the ball came off of the punter’s foot…. Game over. I got up and started washing dishes; then I took the trash out. At least my wife was happy that I was working off my frustration by helping with household chores. This is the first decision of Mike Smith’s that I have been critical of. Play to win… at least you can hold your head up high, even if it doesn’t work out.

I love Smitty and all, but I could not believe that he punted on that 4th and 5. If we had gone for it, we would have converted and Matt Ryan would have marched the Falcons down the field for a score which would have led to a Falcon victory. Oh, well, you know what they say…hindsight is always 20/20.

Scenario #1:

The Falcons go for 4th and 5, get it, and possibly get a touchdown to win!

Scenario #2:

The Falcons go for 4th and 5, don’t get it, and New Orleans gets the ball back in great field position. Their priority would be running out the clock and might get a field goal (requiring us to then get a touchdown and 2-point in a minute).

Scenario #3:

Punt it away, risk a giant return (again), and risk your defense gives up another big play or just gives up tons of first downs. At best you get the ball back with a minute and still requiring a touchdown.

Why do we pick Scenario #3??????????????

Good lord, if we simply play fundamental defense today we wouldn’t have constantly got gash by an offense that decided to run the ball today. Our defense made them look like the league’s top rushing team. I have some “Buster Balls” to hand out today to… Boley: a bust this year, Foxworth: too light in the a** and gets thrown around like a rag doll, Defensive Line: where’s the freakin pass rush when their doubling Abraham? We need defensive line BAD! Oh well, this is the first year, I look to improve each year.

What a disappointment. I can’t believe how bad the game plan was on defense. They were not ready and could not deal with it while the game was going. Great offense as long as the coaches did not have to THINK. We had not stopped N.O. all day, why did they think we could when they punted. We gave this one away.

People can say, what a great year, or they could say, we should have won. Again the falcons take you to the edge and disappoint. I have been watching since 1966 and I am afraid to expect anything from the falcons.

You had to know the D was in trouble when Brooking was assigned to cover Reggie Bush.

The only player on the team with a clue about “returns” is Harry Douglas. You MUST let Douglas return ALL PUNTS AND KICKOFFS. Norwood does not have the vision for the job (kickoffs). Finnerans hands are no better than Douglas’ and Finneran is obviously there to just fair catch.

Nobody quit. The offense is coming along nicely but we completely failed in 2 of 3 aspects of the game. We were asleep at the wheel on the Thomas KO return and you can blame that idiot Van Gorder for the poor defensive scheme today. Brees didn’t beat us. They simply lined up and hit us in the mouth with the running game. For those of you that don’t remember, Van Gorder was the mastermind behind ruining a very good Georgia Southern football program and he will ulitmately cost the Falcons too. Smith died by the sword of loyalty today when he showed confidence in the Van Gorder run unit by not going for it on 4th and 5. I know where we were in terms of field positon but we weren’t going to stop them regardless becasue we had a bad game plan on denense today. Should have went for it. Next offseason move, find a real defensive coordinator.

Agree that the Defensive Line needs an overhaul: couldn’t stop the run worth a hoot.

I don’t understand Norwood’s running straight into a pile of bodies on every kickoff return. If he sees he can’t go straight ahead, how about a veer? Maybe Harry Douglas should do kickoff returns as well as punt returns? Boley was great last year..what happened to his play?

Ryan did an outstanding job, along with White, Jenkins and Finneran.

One special teams play and one really bad call by head coach Mike Smith doomed the Falcons. You just can’t punt the ball back to the best offense in the league with only 3 minutes to go!!! I have a bad feeling the Falcons finish the season 10-6 and do not make the playoffs.

By rms

December 7, 2008 6:00 PM | Link to this

I soley blame this loss on Mike Smith not the defense and here’s why. Neither team defense was stopping anybody so in this situation at 4th and 5 you had to get the first down and not only that score a touchdown with little or no time on the clock. Even if you get the first down and score a touchdown, if there is too much time on the clock thats just like punting the ball too them and allowing them to march down the field to score because throughout the game nobody(from either side) is stopping anybody. Its one of those games in which whoever has the ball last with the right amount of time wins!! and unfortunately it was the other team.

If you want to see a great defense to copy look at the Steelers, the Bucs, etc (good front, linebackers, and secondary). The defensive front takes to many plays off, Brooking days are over, Boley is to small looking like a cornerback. The Falcons play defense hoping to make a play and the best defenses in the NFL know that they will make a play. Not enough turnovers and looking a the highlights you can see so many players jogging, out of position and you never see any punishing hits by this group. It is ashame that the coaches see these things during film along with the players and on Sunday comes out and tries to fool the fans as if we don’t see the same players doing the same thing weekly such as jamal anderson (bust), Keith Brooking (slow), Boley (db playing linebacker), and all the tackles up front (to small and not mean enough).

OK, there’s just a little too much Matt Ryan love going on in here. Terrible interception in first quarter is what got Saints motivated. And he audibled into that pass against a three man front. And even though he got away with it today, Ryan cannot keep forcing passes into double and triple coverage. A good defense will make him pay for that. And did you notice when he did it there was usually a wide open receiver somewhere that he didn’t see. And give it up to the receivers for bailing Ryan out on weak pass after weak pass. He can’t hit his receivers in stride and it cost us at least two touchdowns today. He can’t throw the ball deep with any authority and that cost us at least two touchdowns today. This isn’t to say he is a bust; we simply can’t know that yet. But for a town that’s quick to call out some QB’s for every single flaw (on and off the field), seems like old Matty is getting stroked a little bit much up in here today. I’m sorry but 300+ yards in this kind of loss against a defense we should have scored 40 on is not my idea of impressive.

Our defensive coordinator straight got out-thunk today. I saw it from the opening drive, three straight runs, that the Saints had a different plan today, and that it had a chance to work. The Saints usually try to win with the big play, today they had only three plays over 20 yards, yet they consistently ran the ball straight up the gut on us for SEVEN FREAKING YARDS PER CARRY. Oh yeah the defense got beat, but it was more getting out schemed and out coached than it was Brooking’s consistently bad defense against the pass ( he broke up one against Reggie today, but Brees was looking to exploit any matchup against #56). Boley could, and should have sealed this game for us with that easy pick. We all knew where Brees was going the minute Reggie peeled off, and 59 just choked. I think the corner’s played well against the pass today (and did you see Chris Houston body slam Colston on the sideline pass!). They shouldn’t have had to do so much against the run.

And this deserves it’s own paragraph. Who is the complete idiot that called a quarterback draw for Matt Ryan on that failed last drive? I know he stumbled and bumbled his way into the end zone on foot today, but we all know that’s because not one of the 11 defenders on the field considers it worthwhile to watch out for him running anywhere. To say he is un-athletic is being kind. To call a planned QB draw for Ryan is complete lunacy and a waste of a play anytime the defense want’s to keep you in front of them. That’s when they are paying attention to him.

Add some p** poor special teams play (I’m sure Jerious is hurting now and I would rather see him sit and get well) and you have a team under-performing today in a major way. Maybe it’s part of the process.

Okay…the falcons have won either games so far. Thats double from last year, so that means something. Regardless how they played today the team finally has a good quaterback, a good runningback, a star wide out, a good O-line…those are great starting points for a playoff team. I’d rather seem them go 8-8, or 9-7 (pray to god they beat the Rams) Than one and done in the playoffs…remember the Falcon stat, never had winning back to back seasons! 8-8 isn’t bad at all…

Well, I didn’t think the Falcons were going to win today because I felt that the Saints being 6-6 and their backs against the wall would play well at home. The Saints have playmakers and depth on offense. Our defense is outmanned in the secondary( even though they play hard) and very soft against the run. I mean the Falcons played hard but the Saints were just a little bit better in all phases. Hopefully the Birds can win against the Bucs at home, Minnesota in Minnesota, and the Rams at home. The Falcons play in a VERY tough division, they could finish 9-7 and be last in the NFC!

bad coaching this game, should have went for it in 4th down. our defense sucks what makes them think they can hold them with 2 to and 3 min to go. horrible challenge by coach smith, i dont know y he challenged it with the game so close no way he was going to win it. matt ryan played awesome. PS FIRE BRIAN VANGORDEN the guy keeps playn the same defense over n over, hate that cover 2 defense.

I always feel like we got a chance with the ball in our offenses hand and the game on the line. I have never felt that way with our defense and this has been for years. Boley has to make that interception. I agree with an earlier poster, our defense does not create turnovers. Having said that I think we got a chance regardless of what the realist say about the defenses coming up. Our offense gets a little better each week. If we win next week I think we control our destiny whether we make it to the playoffs or not.

And to you realists take this into consideration, Minnesota may not have that top rated defense if they’re missing those two big boys in the middle. Just because they got a repreive to play this week doesn’t mean they will be on the field week 16 when we meet.

I truly believe Thomas Dimitroff will fix this defensive line in the offseason. The linebacking corp needs work as well. the offense did a good job today. I wish coach had let the offense go for it on 4th and 5. Our defense couldn’t stop running water all day so I knew the birds would never get the ball back if they didn’t go for it. Sure enough, our defense never made a stop. Like I said, TD will address the defense in the offseason.

The Falcons were supposed to win 2-4 games. Despite that, a rookie QB has put up numbers that are comparable to the best rookie QB seasons in the history of the NFL. Full stop.

The fans complaining about Ryan’s play are either working on an agenda (either pro-Vick or just very embarrassed by the fact they could be so wrong with their predictions when the Falcons drafted this stud) or they don’t know football and think every pass should be completed. Either way it’s comical. Playoffs or not, I cannot wait to see what Dimitroff does with his Offseason number 2. If it is half as good as his first effort the Falcons will have to be considered Super Bowl contenders next season.

They have already exceeded the expectations of anyone that has any kind of football knowledge and if they make the playoffs, that’s an overachievement for this year. GO FALCONS!!! and hopefully they will address the team’s needs (Defensive backs & line; plus the Offensive line) during the off season.

WHY IN THE NAME OF GOD would Smitty take the BALL OUT OF RYAN’S HANDS on 4th and 5 and give it to our Defense to try and make a stop. THEY DIDN’T STOP THE SAINTS ALL DAY so all of a sudden they are going to make the critical stop needed??? OF COURSE NOT!!

NEVER NEVER NEVER DO I WANT THE BALL TO BE TAKEN OUT OF OUR FRANCHISE QB’S HANDS and given to the 23rd ranked Defense in the league - especially when our D played like the 32nd rank D.

By Falcoholic

The defense played well enough to keep us in the game. They were playing the #1 offense in the NFL. What killed the Falcons today was special teams play and some critical lapses near the end of the game. Giving up the big return hurt the momentum, after the Falcons had gained it. And the offense contributed to the loss by missing the block on the left side of the OL that resulted in a backfield tackle of Turner. That mental lapse was the game.

Also, what’s up with the running game? 1. When defenses key on Turner, they shut down our ENTIRE running game. We have Mughelli, Norwood, and Snelling. Why were they ALL shut down? It’s feast or famine for the running game, for some reason. 2. When Turner is having a bad day, he repeatedly runs into a pile of offensive and defensive linemen piled up in the middle. There’s a solid mass of 8 or 9 bodies and he runs RIGHT INTO IT. What’s wrong with turning outside of the pile? Shouldn’t he be seeing the immovable object in front of him and cutting left or right?

I’m a little puzzled with the inconsistency of the running game.

@ dave, I was born in Atlanta, and I will be buried there. But no time soon, so if you can’t handle the truth, you might want to raise up out of here, CAUSE I’M NOT GOING ANYWHERE!

@ the real Vick Supporter, Dude I feel your pain. If I critique Matt Ryan and I call him slow, I must be talking about him being white. Even though I’m the first to say Byron Leftwich is slow as dirt. You can’t even talk football around here without some poor white trash insulting anyone and everyone Black. I’m sure the ignorant MV7 support is just some neo-nazi attempts at humor. I’m really disgusted with all the other white falcons fans who don’t bother to try to control their peers.

You keep talking football, they will keep talking race as it is the only thing they care about. Those loofs (backwards fools) never wanted a Black QB in Atlanta, no matter what. At least they tolerate the other rich Black athletes. If they had a lick sense they would have a sit in at Flowery Branch to make Arthur Blank bring Vick back to a team and an organization that is finally ready for a superstar quarterback, not a guy who has a very good chance to be a star one day.

@ Grinch, I agree with you 1000%! This team and this franchise are way overdue to live up to some of the potential they have had. This team is in a position to step up and accomplish something right now, so I’m not giving anyone a pass for not playing up to the level they need to be at to win down this stretch. Too many people read their own press and start thinking all they have to do is show up. That’s all they did today and it may have cost them dearly. All real FANS expect the team to show up and show out every week.

The coach gave a good reason why he did not go for it on 4th down, and the commentators gave the same reason why he would not go for it also, before the coach’s decision was made. The team played well enough to win,but in the end could not get the stops they were getting in the first half. Despite this loss they are playing good enough to win the next three or two of three. I did not expect them to be contending for a playoff spot this year, so I am happy for what they have done after thirteen games, even if they were not to make it this year. For sure the focus in free agency and moreso the draft will be on the Defense. Abraham was getting doubled but still no one else was getting through to the Saints QB.

Most of the elements that the Falcons have exhibited were evident today. Good offense. Today the offense was at times incredible. Receivers made some of the best plays of the year. All of them.

Defense. Where do we start. They rarely put pressure on the QB. Only Abraham and Babineux are capable of putting any pressure on the QB and Abraham is doubled all day. The 4 man rush on every play is getting old. A disturbing problem with this defense is no ability to cause turnovers. Not many takeaways this year. Usually they do better against the run but today was odd. Especially at the end when you knew NO was going to run and they still gained 8 yards on consecutive first downs.

But if you take the lack of D and great O it was a push. Neither team could stop the other. So why did the Falcons lose. One turnover versus none for the Saints. And special teams. The falcons have been haunted all year by poor special teams. Either an inability to field punts much less run them back. Or an inability to cover kick offs. This was the difference in the game.

Usually the anger subsudes after a couple of hours but I am still p**. So I need to write more. Just terrible on defense and special teams today. Norwood’s is a gamer but does anybody else think he dances too much? Agree with most that Ryan is doing great but while he is way ahead of where I thought he might be at this point he is still in development mode. Lets not put him in the HOF yet. However, won’t he be great when he hits his peak?

I blogged earlier about this too but it deserves repeating for my own mental sanity. VAN GORDER SUCKS. He ruined Georgia Southern and he will ruin the Falcon’s defense. Granted, we weren’t that good to start with and we don’t have a lot of playmakers on that side of the ball, but it wouldn’t matter if we did. VG is awful. Just awful. Nice attitude on defense today. Lets line up and let them knock our teeth out. Lets play uninspired. Lets lay down like a bunch cream puffs and let a banged up Reggie Bush and a 4th stringer from Illinois run all over us. Any somebody besides Chris Houston line up and get physical with the receivers. We need bullies on the receivers. Beat them up a little. Illegal contact for 5 yards and a first down every now and again is alot better than a 15yd cushion and a first down. Can you say Nick Saban’s scheme? Oh wait, that’s right, Van Gorder is coaching. Never mind. Let go with cover 2 and let them thorw 30 yard routes underneath and uncontested.

Falcons win this game as long as they keep Brooking out of coverage situations. (Got beat at least 3 times) I think we need a heapin helpin of S. Nichols and healthy safeties to hold down Bush and Shockey. (No Nichols, Safeties busy chasing Saints RB’s running up the middle) The D-Line may be the 2nd most improved unit, and they are getting better. Brees takes a bunch of sacks and hits this week and several balls batted down due to good pressure from the front four. (They let me down, no pressure at all, but how much of that was bad scheme by coaching staff) We may even see a blitz or two, because now the whole team trusts the cornerbacks. (I saw 56 come late on one blitz, anybody else see anything? Again, poor scheme) No picks this week, our DB’s have hands of stone, but they are always right there and they will break up many passes. (They did a decent job, only one pass over 20 yards, Boley missed pick could have been the dagger) Less than 3 plays over 20 yards will be surrendered to the Aints. (Actually it was exactly 3)

Exodus Mentality,

The thing that impresses me the most about Matt Ryan is the way that he bounces back from mistakes. He is completely comfortable having the ball in his hands and making plays. As we all know, Ryan was not drafted for his athleticism. He was drafted for his ability to lead a football team and throw the football. Mike Smith should have trusted the kid on that 4th and 5. That D had no shot today. Sean Payton ate Brian VanGorder’s lunch. There’s no way around that, but Matt Ryan was the reason this football team had a shot to win today.

(If you’ll notice, Ryan never claims credit for the good/great catches his receivers make on balls that are off-target. Whether some of the folks here get it or not, he does. That’s the important thing. The man understands that he is not the game. He doesn’t take that kind of arrogant, defiant attitude. He honestly believes that he’s a rook and hasn’t proven anything. That’s exactly the kind of attitude I want from a player. I want a player who doesn’t think he’s God’s gift to a football field. Every sane sports fan out there knows that the fire that a talented player has inside is what counts. I think Matt Ryan has the fire to win. All the other stuff is just smoke.)

Must disagree with exodus—Ryan is definitely slightly above average in terms of speed, but more importantly his pocket vision is way above average, which is why he is rarely sacked. Leftwich is a statue, and Rivers (chargers) also seemed pretty immobile.

Yes, defense hurts Falcons. When the opposing team schemes specifically to take Abraham out of the game and no other defensive lineman steps up, it hurts the Falcons. When the kick-off coverage doesn’t maintain their lanes and gets popped for 88, it hurts the Falcons. When a linebacker drops a softball lobbed into his hands, it hurts the Falcons. When the opposition’s defensive back doesn’t bite on the fly route and the Falcon’s quarterback throws the ball directly to him, it hurts the Falcons. When the Falcons line up to run an obvious quarterback draw on 2nd and three, leaving all the studs (Turner, Mughelli, Snelling) on the sideline, it hurts the Falcons. When the coach decides to let the defense lose the game because it will take longer to lose that way, it hurts the Falcons. When you lose a game that you should’ve won, it hurts the Falcons. Most of the team contributed to this loss. From top to bottom, this just looked like the Falcons of old yesterday. Very disappointing.

@ Great Falconi, I got nothing but love for Matt Ryan. Before yesterday I would tell everyone that this kid never makes the same mistake twice. Unfortunately he audibled into a pass against a 3 man front, with no blitz on, and a DB with help over the top sitting on a slant route. He’s made that type of mistake before, perhaps it was disguised better this time.

I think Ryan is probably his own harshest critic. I wouldn’t think he would ever take credit for the excellence of his teammates. I’m sure h e would be the first to tell you he left a few balls short. My critic of Ryan is not intended to be negative towards him. It is an attempt to reel in some of the ridiculous commentary around here that seeks to compare a rookie QB with a functional coaching staff and front office around him, to a seasoned pro with the best winning percentage of any QB to ever wear the Falcons uniform who never had much help while he was here.

@ Slim. I never said Ryan wasn’t mobile, and he has stepped up in the pocket very well indeed for a young QB. What I said is that he is slow, and Leftwich is slow, and skin color has nothing to do with the analysis. If you want to give real credit for Ryan being able to step up in the pocket, look no further than the stellar play of the O-Line. I guarantee you that’s who Ryan will tell you is responsible for his exceptionally clean uniforms at the end of most games.

Hey Y’all:

This was a game we should have won. We played a little passive on the 4th down play near the end of the game. we should have went for it. A pass would have done it due to none of the Saints secondary men could keep up with our receivers. Giving the ball to the defense I believe was a big mistake due to the defense was getting run and passed on pretty much at will. I would have used my strength for that game which was our offense. We should have went for that 4th down. They would not have stopped us on that drive. The offense was pretty much cooking on all cylinders in the passing game with “ONE HEARTBEAT!”. We had them scared and nervous, the way we should have, and we backed off. That’s O.K . Maybe even the coaach has to get his game in tune in this process of making the Falcons a winning football team. We will take each win and loss one game at a time. This on we gave away.

However, come Sunday, against Tampa Bay, it is time for payback in “OUR HOUSE” at the Georgia Dome. I am more than confident the Falcons are ticked off about the game and will be looking to knock the crap out of Tampa. I will be at the game with my “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!” T -Shirt drinking beer ,slapping fives and talking trash with fellow Falcon fans throughout the game saying “ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY!!!!” or nearly every play. This game will not be for the soft hearted. Therefore, have your voices ready at the game, at home, or at your neighborhood sports bar. We are going to do this in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!” See you guys at the game.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN.
TELL EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO FALCONS!!!! SEE YOU AT THE DOME!

      "ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY!!!"

We got the offense on track now we have to address the defense in the off season. Brookings time to call it quits Boley probably wont get re-signed and Jackson and Milloy are 35+ yrs old. Foxworth has shown me nothing and I’m not so sure Jamal Anderson is a professional football player. Keepers on that defense for me would be Abraham (of course), Coleman,Lofton,Houston,Babineaux,Anderson(1 more year to step up),Davis,Nicholas,Decoud,Biermann(at linebacker),Grimes(special teams). And to the rest of the defense the coach needs to see you in his office and bring your playbook.

DeJavu all over again. Why is it the Falcon’s defense reminds me of the Bulldogs. At the end of the Saints game huge holes, open field. The Falcons defense could have saved the game, but just couldn’t do it. Why?

So does tonight’s game have any bearing on the Falcon’s playoff chances in any way at all? Not sure who to root for.

John Mc wrote: “Brooking was pathetic yesterday. Time for him to go.”*

Yeah, our leading tackler in the game was “pathetic”…what does that say for the rest of the defense. Funny how people single out Brooking when he is the leading tackler and didn’t drop the easy interception like Boley. Hmmmm…what could be the reason…..hmmm

exodus, I’m not buying that this offensive line is any better than the prior O-lines.

The difference is Ryan’s intuition on picking up on the blitz, and either stepping up or running away from it. Not many QB’s have this ability.

Obviously, the qb’s ability to read the field contributes to this. Peyton Manning isn’t very mobile, but he’s rarely sacked. Partly due to o-line, partly b/c he’s so good at burning the defense when they blitz.

Leftwich is a statue. Ryan has decent mobility.

As I have previously posted I am NOT surprised at the success Mat Ryan is having. As I reported previously living in Tampa and being a neighbor of Coach Dungy and Gruden, and having had numerous conversations with both about Ryan’s pre draft workout at BC. one could not help but know this guy was a STUD. Tony’s comments included, “highly intelligent, intuitive, great feel for the game, can make all the throws and bottom line a leader, he will be a pro bowler”. Gruden was more direct, stated “ Ryan’s is as good a NFL QB prospect as he had ever seen”. Gruden went on to say that he would be shocked if within 3 years he was not one of the top 2-3 QB’s in the league.

I didn’t recall Ryan had a broken foot through much of his senior year at BC, but Gruden pointed that out; he also said that anyone that didn’t think Ryan had a strong arm doesn’t know football.

Glen Dorsey is not having an impactful year at KC and is grading out as an average to good defensive tackle.

Quarter Back Ratings Matt Ryan – 92.0 —— 9th Joe Falcco - 81.0 —- 20th

Enough said, Ryan’s a run away for Rookie of the year

AS LONG AS THEY CONTIUE TO TRY TO RUN ON FIRST AND SECOND DOWN LATE IN THE GAME WHEN THEY ARE DOWM A SCORE AND TRY TO THROW ONLY AFTER TWO MORE FAILED RUNS UP THE GUT THERE WILL BE MORE LOSES LIKE THE NEW ORLEANS AND DENVER GAMES. THERE IS A TIME TO RUN AND A TIME TO PASS,AS GREAT AS THE COACHING HAS BEEN THEY NEED TO FIGURE THIS OUT.IF I’M SITTING IN MY RECLINER AND I KNOW THEY’RE GOING TO RUN THE BALL YOU KNOW THE OPPOSITION MIGHT HAVE A CLUE AS WELL DUUH!

Exodus Mentality, What games have been watching? Ryan has made so many great throws and hit receivers in stride alot more times than not. Your fixation on that one interception in your post is like someone fixating on the multiple fumbles/ interceptions that Vick would make.

Ryan is not fast, but the kid’s not nearly as unathletic as you make out. He moves in the pocket and makes great plays out of nothing.

To the haters out there: Ryan converted several third downs in that game, including a third-and-21

E.Mentality: There’s a reason that Ryan is getting praised by the national media, coaches, opponents, teammates, and fans —he’s really, really good for a rookie QB!

Check out his numbers, or if you really know anything about football, check out his poise, leadership, and composure in the offense. He’s so much more than that game-manager Flacco.

Why do you think everyone in the media and in general, except for the few haters on this blog, say that this kid is the best rookie QB since Marino? and many feel that Ryan’s been more impressive.
