Turnovers can’t stop Falcons
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Falcons should have won by a lot more points, but it was an awesome victory on the road against a team they should have beaten.
Turnovers made this one closer than it should have been. The refs tried to hand this one to the Chargers. Didn’t think Finneran or Turner fumbled. Bad, bad calls. Not sure what replays they’re looking at. Fortunately, it didn’t cost the Falcons the game.
Matt Ryan was awesome again today. He and Roddy make such a great team. Ryan was on target and Roddy did a great job getting open. The rookie Harry Douglas made a rookie mistake on the fumble, but made up for it with the TD catch. Glad to see the tight end get in on the offensive game plan.
The defense played great, getting the safety and making big stops when it had to. Then the blocked field goal. They held down LT and were all over Rivers. Their only points came off three turnovers (2 questionable ones) that gave the Chargers good field position.
I like Mike Smith’s decision to go for it on fourth down, but give Ryan a chance on the keeper or a pass play way before it gets to fourth down. When they’re jamming the middle, go around the end.
Next week: a huge game at New Orleans. Need to win that division game.
Go Falcons! Awesome win today.

We definitely should have won by a bigger margin, but I’ll still take this win. I was very pleased to see the coaching staff get the TE more involved in the offense. Turner was his usual bruising self, and the defense showed up big time. We didn’t blitz a whole lot, but we were still able to get plenty of pressure on Phillip Rivers. Glad to see Kroy Bierman get his first career sack. Jonathan Babineax got his contract extension and he earned it today with his 2 sacks. Great win, and let’s get ready for next week’s road game at New Orleans!

Nice win on the road, although it should not have been that close. Anyway, can you imagine what Joe Horn must be thinking to himself after practically begging to not play on this team. And now he is stil at home watching from the couch like the rest of us since no other team thought he was worth picking up either. What an idiot!

I agree,,, The ‘coons won one that they should have, even with the amazing efforts of the men in stripes. I too would love to see just what they are looking at in the replay booth. Makes you wonder if they are trying to “NOT” reverse too many calls to make it seem like the guys on the field look too bad.
But,,, I digress. The only real complaint I have is our Red Zone offense. WAY too many field goals from this team. We seem to forget that we have sure-handed, tall recievers, and that we don’t have to play tough guy ball and ram it down the middle every time. I still find it incredible that we are finding such things as the only complaints for the Falcon’s. Has to be one of the most amazing years in this team’s history, taking into account the pre-season predictions and expectations. Great job guys,, from the coaching staff all the way down to the practice squad. Keep it up !!!!

A new direction! Past Falcon teams would have lost this one. A brain-dead fumble on a punt! A questionable fumble returned for a touchdown! A phantom fumble which kept the Chargers alive! A wide open Falcon overthrown in the end zone! Pointless up-the-middle thrusts at the goal line when a pitchout was begging to be called! Still a Falcon victory. Better teams would gave been gracious enough to take the game the Falcons were trying so hard to give away (like the Broncos)! Not impressive but a win. That is all that counts at this point in the season!

Got to change up the play calling down deep, four straight ahead runs into that beastly defense, go play action, sweep outside, QB sneak…got to get points there, I’m kicking the field goal. Chargers offense sux. Falcons should have won big… Nice job Defense!

Mike Carey. You guys remember him. He is the same guy who called the terrible game in in Philly/Atl division game a few years ago. In fact, you can expect ever call to go against the Falcons every time he is on the field. He is by far one of the worst ( and possible something more sinister) officials in the NFL. Great job toughing it out Birds!

The timekeeper did his best to give SD every chance to catch up. The clock stopped after the fumble by Rivers and was never restarted until the next play. The clock was also stopped for 10-15 seconds on both of the Falcons sacks of Rivers in the 4th quarter. Is there any reason for that? I figure SD got an extra minute of gametime compliments of the clock keeper. We should have been beyond the 2 minute warning at the start of our last posession. The Falcons front office needs to review that and complain.

1) Finnernan’s fumble-the ball was rolling off his arm when he took 1 step. Where did he ever have control and moreover when he did he take 2 steps with it in control? Even the ref was so unsure he called it an interception when announcing the challenge.
2) Turner’s fumble-I see his arm clearly on the ground from the side shot and then the ball pops out at least a half-second later.
My only guess is that the replay refs were San Diego natives.
And, did anybody else get peeved at how many commercials there were today and, more importantly, how they always would come after a controversial call and then return with the next play practically in progress.
Great game Falcons-even when you are not playing your best, you still look great!

Glad to get a win! But they were too sloppy. Now there were questionable turnovers by the refs but they should not have been put in the position. I think there was way too much running and not enough throwing….for goodness sakes they were ranked last against the pass!!!! But we still won the game! Lets keep playing week by week and 60min a game! Go Falcons! P.S. I proudly wear my Micheal Turner jersey!

Today’s score should read; Falcons 35 - Chargers 3. Two blown calls by the Review Booth should have given the Falcons an additional 13 points and taken away that many from the Chargers.
It was an outstanding win considering the bad calls against the Falcons. Matt Ryan will lead the Falcons to the Super Bowl in two years.

This game gave me a headache — thank God we won! With all the things that didn’t go our way, it was good to see our team never give up.
Douglas is clearly a better PR than Jennings was. He will learn from his mistake — hell, he had an excellent return on his next chance.
I was suprised the refs didn’t overturn the Finn fumble — he clearly never had possession. It was hard to see whether Turner fumbled or not.
I think the Falcons learned a lesson on the fake punt.
Bottom line: when you win a tough game where turnovers and questionable calls are all going against you — the team is better prepared to face adversity in the future.

Great win today guys. I feel tnat the national football league don’t want to accept the fact that Atlanta is a legimate football team. This is not the first time the officals have tried to take the game away from the Falcons. They shoed alot of heart and perserverance to overcome three turnovers. 2 were b/s calls by the officals. I’m sure the league isn’t ready to concede the great turn around of the Falcons. Make them all believers. The whole state of GEORGIA are behind you guys.

Great win considering the falcons did all they could to hand it to the Chargers. Ryan already looks light-years better than the statue-esque Rivers.
Agree with prior post that Ryan should study Peyton Manning’s handoff and fake handoff technique.
Horrible call to have the Chargers punt again. Easterbrook on espn has written good columns on this. Basically, on 4th and short, on their own 40, late in game, down by 9, the Chargers should not have punted at all.
Falcons should have counted their lucky starts that the Chargers went ahead and punted. Why give them another chance to think about it/risk a fumble or muffed punt?
Very dumb coaching move. But everyone has a brainf-rt sometimes. Good to see the birds win an ugly game like this. Great season so far.

The fickle finger of fate was with the Birds today. Three turnovers, getting surprised on the fake punt, and terrible officiating usually add up to a big loss. I agree Coach Smith erred in not taking the ball before the fake punt. I’m still a big fan of Turner, but it appears he is taking way too long in the backfield before hitting the hole… bad flashback of T.J. Ducket.
Birds are a blast to watch. I feel like they are going to make every 3rd down with Matty Ice’s wisdom and accuracy.

Like so many other fans I’m disappointed in the officiating…what replays did the refs/officals look at on Finneran’s and Turner’s fumbles? Finneran didn’t look like he ever had control of the ball to me. Turner seemed to be flat on his back when the ball popped-up. But at least the Falcons won!!! Great going, Team.

Good win. Pathetic ref calls. How in the world they called that a fumble on Turner is beyond me. How they say that play by Finn (who still can’t hang onto the ball on easy catches) a completion then a fumble is even more baffling. Instead of Goodell just dropping the hammer on knucklehead players (deservedly so in most cases), he needs to tighten things up with the referees- it’s getting embarrassing. The Falcons beat two teams today- the Chargers AND the refs…good job!

Bad refs, bad special teams, bad receiving, bad play calling. Result: The Falcons are good enough to overcome all of that. The defense is playing better every week, and this week should get the game ball. Why don’t the Falcons crank up the offense more in the second half. The losses to Denver and Philadelphia are a direct cause of the offense minds having tight butts. Two things causes more losses than almost anything else: the prevent defense, and putting the offense in the cooler. Let’s hope the Falcons are learning from the four losses.

The real problem is that all the teams know when Turner is in the backfield the Falcons are going to run and when Norwood is in the backfield we are going to pass.
We need to use Norwood more in run plays. In the first couple of weeks, Norwood was getting 5-10 carries, now it seems he gets 2 or 3.

Serious foul-ups away from home, against a team not in the bottom rank. So how come we still won?
Two reasons: (1) super all around D throttled a high scoring team, and (2) don’t look now, but pending two more games to be completed, Matty Ice clocked a stunning 130.2 rating, by far tops in the league this week. Roddy gets a lot of credit for that, but still another un-friggin-believable day for a rookie QB that didn’t have a lot of sizzle on TV, but numbers don’t lie.

I’m with you, Row 3. I’d be hard pressed to think of a reason why a coach should re-kick unless you’ve lost possession after the penalty or they REALLY pinned you.
Maybe I’m jaded about the referee-ing this year, but I thought Clary at least got the block-in-the-back call correct after Jammer pushed our guy into his (late fair catch call) returner. (Then again, may there never again be a worse call than the Eagles - Jennings punt call.) How about Clary getting rolled by Ryan. I think he’d’ve caught Weddle otherwise. (Gotta love QBs and kickers who will play football.)
Lemme also note the incredible play of the Oline this year. Sacks? Haven’t seen many. And let’s not give up on Jamaal Anderson yet. It was his paw, seconded by Abraham as shown by two TiVO replays, that blocked that field goal try. Props to Babineaux; “he was beast.”
Real heads up play by Houston and whomever covered the SD receiver in the back of the endzone. Let’s hear it for playing tough, knowing there is no longer a push-out rule!
As always, I find the comments more exciting and intuitive than the writer who’s paid to do this. With all due respect, Bird Babe, I know quite a few women who could write a longer, more compelling hardcore football Xs-and-Os column each week.

Love the composer from Ryan today. He hangs in the pocket during the rush and delivers strikes to the receivers.
One frustration is the conservative approach the staff takes in the 2nd half. Continue doing what got you the lead in the first place…balance. With a lead in the 2nd half the coaches love to hand the ball to Turner 3 times then punt. Let Ryan be aggressive, he has shown that he can be trusted to make the right decisions. Coach with some killer instinct in the 2nd half please!

Mike Carey used to be one of the better refs, but I believe the hit he received from Ryan shook something loose!!
He stumbled and stammered when trying to explain the penalties on the Chargeers punt. I believe the call he was attempting to make and state was off-setting penalties. This would explain the re-kick. As you will recall, the TV crew said that producers/directors in the truck didn’t understand his explanation, so they just let it drop.
When Carey’s graded after this game, I’m sure the NFL will acknowledge that he blew both Falcon challenges. Maybe he suffered a slight concussion???

I thought the Falcons vs. Chargers officiating was the worst i’ve seen in a very long time. There was some bazaar calls, some wrong calls and some calls that I think they just made up. The two turnovers did not look like turnovers to me at all, especially the Turner fumble. No way that should not have been overturned. The two clowns calling the game were horrible as well. I’ve never heard so many incorrect comments, names called, down and distances… They were embarrassing and should be ashamed of themselves.
Bottom Line: The Falcons dominated the Chargers. They should have won the game by many more points and with much greater ease. But, they overcame their mistakes and the refs poor calls and got the win! Any other Falcons team in the last 15 years would not have won this game.

I like the fact that CS is trying to instill a hard nosed mentality.THE goal line fiasco would have cost us the game against a better opponent, 4 plays straight up the gut? I know he’s trying to send a message, but good grief we could be a little more creative. We should have taken the 3 and still had the momentum and they would have gone into the half down by 2 scores.
I too feel like many fans who believe we should be more aggressive other than just in the 1st quarter, we have a dynamic passing game. We can’t always just sit on leads. Go Falcons!

I watched the entire game and I wondered for a while if the officiating crew was trying to influence the result of this game. When these bizarre fumble calls are made you have to reflect on the NBA Referee who was found guilty recently for gambling and influencing the results of some NBA games. I always consider Mike Carey to be a good referee, but he had a terrible game today, and i hope the league office will review ths game and discipline him, as neither of the two fumbles he reviewed against Finneran and Turner were fumbles, and these were plain to everyone. The score should have been 45:7., but the most important thing is that we won. Will the coaching staff consider using Harry to handle Kickoff and Punt. Jerious seems too timid he seems to be diving just like Warrick Dunn used to do.

IN answer to the post about Norwood not getting more touches … have you not noticed how little he has contributed the last three games? If he is all alone with nobody within 15 yards he may do something but if anyone gets within touching distance he goes down! Heck I think the wind from a passing blocker knocked him down a few times!!!! He doesn’t like to be hit …

For those complaining about the “conservative” play in the second half, we punted 2 times in the whole freaking game and Turner had 120 yards keeping the ball out of River’s hands. The reasons SD were able to stay in the game? Matt overthrows a receiver in the end zone, Roddy drops a pass in the end zone, HD muffs a punt, don’t run the QB sneak at end of 1st half and two HORRIBLE calls by the officials. Conservative play calling had nothing to do with it.

Okkkk…i’ll try this again because the ajc didn’t accept my comment. I didn’t care for how the game was officiating today as well. I couldn’t recall Mike calling the Philly game like another blogger said so I did a little research and it was actually Jerome Boger. Do a google search on him and his call in the philly falcons game and trust me….you’ll see A LOT of stories
Anyway, I still was surprised at how poorly Mike and his crew called this game because they are usually one of the better crews. I do think Ryan blowing through him caused a little damage or something…it was actually kind of funny because you hear him turn around on air and go - “what was the other penalty” lol. I’m just happy we were able to get out of there with a win. Man what’s happened to LT and the Chargers? I actually thought we’d lose this game before the season started but seeing them in action…they did nothing to us offensively at all. They’re lucky they got the gifts they did. As far as I’m concerned we only turned the ball over 1 time, but we don’t need to find ourselves in those situations like we did back in Philly with Adam Jennings….speaking of which I seen that loser muff a punt in Detroit on Turkey Day - HILARIOUS!
GO FALCONS

Yep. Big Norwood fan here but was very disappointed when in the 1st half he ran out of bounds setting up a 3rd and 6 when had he lowered his shoulder he could have made it a much more manageable 3rd and 3. We got a 1st down anyway but it’s the little things that keep drives alive.

anything can happen if the Falcons make the playoffs.the only team in the NFL to fear is the New York Giants…just think with a rookie QB

Past Falcon teams probably would have lost this one. Not because of their play, but how the game unfolded. Three turnovers on the road, yet still a win! Should have run a QB sneak on 3rd or 4th down at the first half’s end. Curious, but a win on the road is impressive. SD needed this game and the refs tried to give it to them. Maybe it’s Feb.,’09 and they don’t have digital on instant replay. All in all, 8 and 4. Love this team!

Armond,
Interesting. It looks like the derived version has become common parlance, but I see your point. I was familiar with the myocardial ones, but not brain ones. Will likely adopt the medical origination.
Other topix: The goal line stand was pretty sad. Falcons need to learn to sell the handoff to Turner, and have Ryan waltz in untouched, especially today when SD was keying on Turner.
Mr. Blank: any chance you can get us Calvin Johnson for hannuka?

That last pre-season game, the best QB on the field was Joe Flacco. If the Falcons would have drafted a D-lineman, many thought Ryan would have been drafted by the Ravens and we could have gotten Flacco in the second round. I wish Ryan luck but, his arm strength is questionable. He cannot throw the deep put. That will limit our offense because the opposing defenses will stuff the middle of the field and dare us to throw it outside. Flacco looked awesome. Everyone knew he had the big arm but he also showed very good touch. All anyone talks about with Ryan is intangibles, but what about skills, arm strength, mobility, etc. He is not the best QB on the team Chris Redman because of experience is and in my opinion DJ is the most talented. And its ironic that a MV7 hater is the first to bring up MV7 in this blog because he knows that MV7 is still the best QB on the roster. Also do you smart, know it all bloggers actually believe that the new GM did the drafting in NE. Belichick built that team. The new GM was just there going along for the ride. Get real. I think all of you delusional fans are in for a rude awakening that first game against Detroit. I am a real Falcon fan. And a real fan realizes the true state that his team is in and demand that they do the right things to get better. Start Redman we win 6-8 games Start Ryan we go 2-14. Play-play time known as the preseason is over. Now it’s time for some real NFL football.
Holla….

It is so funny to read what the idiot Monday morning quarter backs have to say. You would think that if they are so smart, they would have a coaching position with the Falcons.

Reamon - it’s called a recession. 6.9% of Georgia is out of work and trying to get back on their feet. Mr. Blank and the Falcons know this and the team feels the Love through the airwaves and in the press every day.
This city is behind the team even though tough choices had to be made on the family side. I respect the season ticket holders that made the family choice to keep their money at home instead of in the dome this fall. They’ll be back for the Tampa game and the Playoffs!

From a logical standpoint…after what has happened to San Diego this year…if you were a ref would you have overturned either one of those fumbles?

Little late to the blog but still, I agree with another poster, why are we trying to ram it into the endzone with the same play unsuccessfully, that is just arrogance or stupidity not sure which. We have great receivers who are very tall (Finn & Jenkins) & surehanded, why can’t we throw it to them & let them make a play? Don’t understand that series at all! Use the receivers, please, they are one of the best units on this team!!

I’m really p*$$ed about the way my hero has been treated. Yeah, I know he’s a murderer. But look at his contributions on the field! No one can dispute the greatness of his contribution. And electrifying performances that led to sellouts and constant primetime slots, even though his team didn’t win that often. These are the things that make HIM great, and I’m tired of him being denied his props. It can only be racism. I mean, who cares what such a great player does off the field? It’s the on field contributions that are important! But no, another black brother has suffered because racists think his off the field troubles are important! REDEMPTION IS NEAR!!!!!

Fellow Falcon Fans…don’t be discouraged after the Falcons lose today. They will win the last three games to finish 11-5. There will be a lot of complaints after today’s loss…but keep everything in perspective.
Today’s game is the toughest left on the schedule and the Falcons will not win a shootout against the Saints at the superdome…just not going to happen. However, getting TB at home after their physical MNF game and then likely getting MN w/o the Williams brothers, and then the Rams at home…3 more wins are for the taking.
