So close against Denver
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Roddy White had it in his hands, but just couldn’t hold on. Ryan put it where it needed to be, but Roddy just couldn’t hold on. Can’t blame Roddy for this loss, though. The defense couldn’t keep Cutler out of the end zone late. The secondary really needs work. Where was Abraham today? No pressure on Cutler.
Ryan had a good day, except for the loft pass that was intercepted. He got away with one earlier and he should have known better to try that again against a Pro Bowler.
The running game really never got going. Turner had a couple of big runs, but the running game needs to get established to take pressure off Ryan.
Finneran came up big today with some big third-down catches. Nice to see him contribute again. He’s a nice big target that Ryan needs, especially on third down.
Elam is still too much of the Falcons scoring. The Falcons have got to get into the end zone more. Fields goals just aren’t enough.
Huge game next week against the Panthers. Go Falcons!

Close don’t count. Modern offenses use the TE. If I don’t have to cover him then one more man to put in the box. 12 receptions in the 10th game.
Still the Falcons are ahead of the game compared to what all of us thought they’d be at this point. Must win against Panthers.

I understand you want to get the best possible play call in for your 4th and 18 shot…But that first timeout would have been better served when we probably don’t (and didn’t) convert. We would have at least had a fighting chance to get the ball back if we stuff the run 3 times instead of laying down.
Really, the only gripe I’ve had with Mike Smith this year is his usage of the TO’s, but he will get better with experience. Cost us the game earlier this year when we didn’t have a TO to challenge a blown call against Philly for a chance to win, and used the first one too early today.

By the way remember to not answer the haters, Vick haters, Vick defenders and the people who’ll be mad that we didn’t win.
Yes, we should have (you can’t run Turner up the middle EVERY first down can you?) won but it’s over.
Bandwagoners jump off now.

Reminded me of the Georgia game yesterday. Never really seemed to get it going consistantly. The defense was WAY too pourous. Denver’s drives looked like practice drills. They pretty much did what they wanted to. The two running touchdowns were walk ins. The offense looked okay, LOVED the 3rd down catches by Finneran. But tell me something,,, why not throw to him on first or second ???? MMMMMMM ?? Roddy had a chance to clinch it with a great throw from Ryan, but can’t put this loss on either one of them. We should have shut Denver down when it counted. Still love the way they are looking, and the remaining schedule looks pretty favorable. (Who would have thought we could say that before the season started?) They can still make the playoffs, but they have GOT to win the games that they should win, like today’s game. We gave one up today. Keep it up Falcons,,,, I see a very bright future for this franchise.

This game was as painful to watch as the Uga game. Falcons looked inept most of the day against a under-mannned team. Just did not look like they wanted this one. Out coached and not well prepared. maybe they thought this was going to be a easy win. Got to bring your A game every week.

The Falcons came out flat against the Broncos today. What was up with the defensive play calling today? Last week, we put all kinds of pressure on Drew Brees and it forced him into some bad decisions. Today, we don’t pressure Jay Cutler at all, and look at the results. Cutler had all kinds of time to throw to his receivers. I’m disappointed in VanGorder and his defense today.
As for the offense, I’m starting to wonder what’s up with Michael Turner. It was reported that he has an injured hand, and I’m starting to wonder how long it’s been hurt and what kind of effect it’s having on him. He doesn’t seem to be hitting the holes and driving people backwards like he did earlier in the season. Also, the dropped TD pass by Roddy White was a true backbreaker. That would have given us a big win today, but Roddy dropped a sure score.
I agree with the person who said that the TE has to be used more often. Hopefully, the Falcons brass will use the offseason to try and find a good TE who can block as well as catch. Times like this is when someone like Alge Crumpler is sorely missed.
Next week is definitely a must win against Carolina.

OH NO! Roddy’s dropping passes again. He had a drop at the end of the game last week that would have sealed that game earlier, one to start the game today, and one that would have won this game. I say you can’t blame the defense because we know what they are, and Denver is who we thought they were. That 3rd down 50 yard or so completion with CH covering was a critical play as well as Finn’s drop that would have been the difference in the score. Did any one else think that we looked kinda Flat today? OH Well,

First Series: Pass…Pass…Pass…Way to outthink ourselves…RIDICULOUS..
On the play where Denver intercepted - It was VERY OBVIOUSLY A BLITZ but there were NO receivers running a HOT route????
Abraham was hurt and/or just not able to do it ALL himself today. Do we have a PLAN B for when that happens? HOW ABOUT A BLITZ. I did not see one…NOT ONE….CUTLER HAD ALL DAY WTF IS THAT ABOUT????
The D-LINE was pourous. They could run around end at will …or they could run up the middle at will.
HORRIBLE PERFORMANCE….Coaches fell down today….I’m afraid this is the Falcons we will see the rest of the way. Hope not. Go birds.

There Were Several Things That Cost The Falcons Today!
Lack Of Preparation On The Coaches And The Players! Opening Kick-Off..We Throw 3 Passes In A Row..Turn Over On Downs! Again We Have 9 Seconds Left Before The Half..NO Play.. We Take A Knee! Same Thing Last Week..29 Seconds On The Clock..NO Play..We Take A Knee!! We Just Seemed Out Of “Kilter” Today..We Had NO Plan On Defense At All!!..Denver Ran At Will..Right Up Our Gut! Why Are We NOT “Chucking” The Receivers At The Line Of Scrimage..Get Em Out Of Their Comfort Zone! We Sorely Need Defense Personell..That’s No Secret.. Too Many DROPPED Passes..We Had The Chance At The End..But ..White Could NOT Hold On!! You Can’t Trade T** For Tat With The Broncos..They Will Beat You Every Time!!

Bozo you hit the nail on the head:You’ve got to bring your A game every week. I would not have expected this type of effort, especially defensively, from this year’s team. Very disappointed. We have to bring our A game next week against the panthers. This team is not good enough to beat quality opponents with anything less.

Defense let us down, but if Roddy White handles that loaf of bread placed in his hands we win the game. All-in-all, Denver is a good team and we went neck and neck with them to the end. The sportscasters didn’t sound like they were watching an inept team.

Simple explanation for the loss:
We didn’t get pressure against their quarterback nearly often enough. The pressured ours just enough.
Roddy White dropped a perfectly thrown touchdown pass.
They ran the ball better than us.
They stuffed the run. We did not.
I figure Mike Smith will go the extra mile in preparing us for Carolina next week. And we’ll be ready. No win will be sweeter than the one coming to us. Jake Delhomme threw 4 interceptions against a crappy Raiders defense last week (something that Vick Supporter will fail to mention). Our defense is better, and we won’t be facing the same mammoth offensive line that we did against Denver.
Get it done, fellas.
Ok, time for he gratuitously retarded comments that will inevitably come from the loneliest retard in the world (the human jockstrap)….

TEam seemed a little flat today while DEnver was jazzed. THE 29th ranked defense did a good job today of stopping our run game. THEy were obviously coached well and had good execution. We had virtually no pressure on Cutler and he picked us apart. our 2ndary is weak as most are when the QB has time. MAtt didn’t have a bad game, just not quite sharp enough, he missed a couple of open guys dor scores. But I would say they just out physicaled us and wanted it more. I wish soneone had a popped their running back but he delivered the blows.

The players and coaches are PEOPLE! Are all of us on our “A game” every work day?
When did we lose our 4th game last year?
Want to feel better? Pretend that we lost the first 4 and today was our sixth win in a row.
It’s not a divisional or conference loss. Ryan is still a rookie as is Mike Smith. We lost by four. I’m not slitting my wrists.

Hi Bird Babe. Completely unacceptable loss! Close does not count for a damn thing. Falcons were not prepared. Broncos were! Cutler outplayed Ryan by a WIDE margin. That unforced interception was a brainf++k by the ignorant rookie QB. Falcon defense totally exposed. SOB Keith “No Tackle” Brooking needs to be put out to pasture or shot! Untalented cur cannot tackle a one-legged elderly woman in a F+++++G wheelchair. Cut him loose! Send SOB Roddy “Another drop” White to the Raiders with his booty buddy DeA++hole Hall. For a rookie, Ryan looks incredible. He made the pass at the end. It’s time the Falcons get receivers that can make the simple clutch catch.
Ryan has a clutch ability that few qb’s have. Unfortunately, we don’t have the receivers to get it done.

I hate losing as much as the next guy but seriously…if you honestly think that your team is going to go undefeated you really really don’t understand the game. Yeah the Pats did it last year, but how many times have teams gone undefeated in any pro sports. Even the best ones eventually lose.
The was a hard fought game and I really can’t find much to complain about except I didn’t care for our CBs to sit off the receivers as much as they did. I’ve never really watched Cutler since he’s been in the league and right now I want to say that he’s been the best one we’ve faced all year. Ryan showed me something too…you take away that INT and I’d say he matched Cutler pass for pass. Big picture wise, I like where the Falcons are as a team, and I like our future. I continue to look at what we were expected to do this season and feel good knowing that we are easily exceeding expectations.

Came down to the defense. Last week Brees passed all over us, but we occasionally got some pressure and forced him to make mistakes. This week, Cutler passed all over us, only we never got pressure and forced a mistake.
Abe’s been good all year. He wasn’t able to pressure in this one, but someone else has to step up on the line at some point. And if that someone else doesn’t step up, Van Gorder’s gotta start sending Lofton, Boley, Milloy, Brooking… somebody’s gotta make a play on a blitz (maybe I’m wrong, but I didn’t remember seeing a blitz the entire game).
First down runs are getting predictable. Start passing on first and running on second and third. Mix it up some.
Roddy White’s had better games. But the play calling on offense was suspect. We threw the ball two yards to Jason Snelling, a third stringer, on 2nd and 20. On a 3rd and 7 where Ryan threw the pick, with Denver clearly bringing the house, we had three receivers streaking. Not a single guy ran a slant or came back on a hitch. That’s bad.
At 6-4, can’t complain where we are at this point in the season, but this loss definitley hurts. Next week is a must win, and when we get Tampa at home, we’ve gotta make sure we take that one, as well.
Go Falcons, keep your heads up after the loss.

If Denver had one of the worst run defenses coming into this game, why did our brilliant OC begin the game with pass, pass, pass, punt? Lose the stupid direct snap to Norwood or Snelling. It never works, it tells the other team exactly what you intend to do with the ball.
We were not up for this game. Our defense looked like it was just going thru the motions. I was also very disappointed in our O Line. We got almost no push when we tried to run the ball. We made Denver look much better than they are. I didn’t get my money’s worth with this one.

You see Fellas, the networks had the teams from Atlanta and Athens all pegged correctly. They knew that the Hawks, Falcons & Dawgs were all fakes and very over-hyped.
Matt Ryan of the Falcons= is the Rafael Furcal of the Braves. I will get back to that analogy later
I’ve been living in North Ga all my life…and I’m telling you the Atlanta teams will NEVER-EVER win or live up to expectations when they are expected to WIN. This why the dome is not selling out and they don’t have the solid fan base here. The people here that truly know the teams know that they are inconsistent at best.
Sadly, It’s just something about the teams here…when they get to the national stage they lay an egg.
Back to my analogy between Ryan and Furcal. Both will make plays to win you a game or two; unfortunately, both will make plays to lose you a game or two as well. The bad part about the latter, we never knew when Furcal will throw the ball from 2nd base into the stands and you never know when Ryan will throw an interception; however, one thing’s for sure, you count on them making a crucial mistake in any given game. Again, you just don’t know when, where and the time but you know it will happen eventually. My point, neither player is consistent enough to be call winner.
As much as I think Vick is a Thug and Scumbag… he was an attraction and players wanted to come to Atlanta to play; likewise, the networks couldn’t get enough of Vick. Matt Ryan…
As much as I hate to admit it… the kid will not win a Superbowl with this team.

I love Mike Smith as a coach.
But Mike, you have GOT to stop hunkering down on potential scoring opportunities.
The Falcons blew that last series by Denver in the first half. They waited 5 seconds too long to call the T.O., Douglas called fair catch when he shouldn’t have, and after all that, when we were near our own 45 with 9 seconds and a timeout … Smith chooses to kneel down.
I would have understood the call if we had been farther back, but that was a great opportunity to throw a long pass and get in field goal range.
Mike, you can’t be that conservative against good teams, or you will always lose to them.
Our defense is playing above its talent level. It’s average at best. So when you have a chance to pile up points as a cushion for it, you better take it.

White catches the pass, and all but the dumb a$$’s would be celebrating, but, as this team continues to show their future needs, management also should be making the draft notes for what needs to be replaced. The offensive line was really weak most of the game stopping guys that average 25 lbs less than them. The defensive rushed got to the QB once in the whole game, so don’t get too upset with the defensive backs. The defensive strategy should have been trying to work more pass coverage than continually rush 4-5 to the QB. The remaining season should be to overcome three straight years of losing records.

stendec… “a brainf++k by the ignorant rookie”? You ignorant f++k. There’s nothing ignorant about Ryan. He’s the best QB to join the Falcons in history, including Bartkowski… and history will prove that. He//, he’ll be ROTY! If White catches the pass, the Falcs are 7-3 and everyone is going crazy. Did they look ahead to Carolina? Maybe. Did they get a little full of themselves after doing their big ESPN special featuring Blank, HCSmitty, Tyan and Roddy? I think so… it happens. Just a step slower this week here and there. But with the loss, they will be razor sharp next week, and Carolina may be a step slow after their unchallenging game against a non-NFL team. They could split the rest of the way (and miss the playoffs) and I’d be satisfied with this season… because of where they’re headed. So, get off their backs, and enjoy the ride, you impatient horse’s patudy.

Babe: You can make excuses for Roddy White if you want(Is that what you get paid for?)but a pro-receiver makes that catch 10 out of nine times! Yes, the defense was weak; the running game sour, and Ryan made a couple of suspect throws. BUT, White makes that catch—that Ryan put right on the money—and all the rest would have been forgotten, by us. End of story.

White self-loathers are the worst and they are plentiful. Hey “Genius” why don’t you address the fact that Brooking has 10 more tackles than your “afflete brotha” Boley, yet you don’t denigrate Boley. You need to go back and look at film if you don’t think Brooking made that play. You self-loathers see what you want to see and ignore stats that don’t make you feel warm and fuzzy….ROTFLOL

He ignores stats and won’t call out any of his “brothas” who have less tackles than Brooking i.e. Michael Boley. I’m really starting to think that Brooking beat him up in high school or took his girlfriend. This was a winnable game & it’s just so gross to lose to those Broncos AGAIN on a day we were commemorating our last big loss to them!! How sad is it that we can’t beat a team missing so many of their starters and on our own turf! We just made too many mistakes to overcome: Ryan overthrew Finn in the end zone, threw a pick that cost us points, Roddy can’t come down with that in the end zone (the great ones need to catch those otherwise you are merely good). The defense got no pressure on Cutler at all, and we were run on by a guy out of football for 3 months!! That is disgusting! Where is our linebacker play? The defense was exposed big time today, they have played well ‘til now but not today! Now we are 1 game behind Tampa and in a must win against Carolina next weekend! I am sooo thrilled for Finn, what a game, I was beside myself I was so happy for him!! He has come back from so much & persevered, what a guy, what a player!! Too bad we couldn’t win…there’s always next week. Go Birds.

Just watched it again, Sage (Tivo). It was Brooking. As I said before, I’ve never seen any reason to defend him. Today, however, he was one of the few who came to play. Just giving due. And what’s up with the racial crap? I am not one to care about skin color. That’ s for lower life forms. And if you don’t like critism, don’t go on the attack. The team had a chance to win late in the fourth quarter. That’s all that matters at this point.
One counted chicken that did not hatch. A rotten egg. Still six eggs in the basket. Who wants to jinx those away by talking playoffs too prematurely now? One game at a time.
Next up is an 8 - 2 team that beat the Falcons soundly at their place. A 4 - 12 team last year, the Falcons have beat a couple of so-so-to-decent teams this year, enough overall to have all teams that play the Falcons now worried. The Falcons are going to find all the rest on its schedule coming prepared to play hard.
All the “one heartbeat” people better be meaning win or lose - we’re for you, just play hard.

Panthers officially end Cinderella season! Will it be another key drop by MV7 groupie? Another Keith “No Tackle” Brooking and friends defensive meltdown? Unaggressive playcalling from Mike Petrino? Special team miscues? Falcons will play just good enough to lose close. Apologists will point to next game then next as losing streak grows. The 6-3 feel good start (which should have been 7-3 with playoff implications) becomes 9-7 or 8-8 final record. Dense Falcon fans will proclaim wonderful success in rebuilding season. Defeats should never be embraced! True fans will point to stumble after solid start. Yes, all professional sports outcomes are fixed. Have my suspicions about college!

I was very disappointed in this loss, for many reasons. I predicted this team to go undefeated at home this year and had a strong feeling that they would.
I had a bad feeling about yesterday’s game, though. Early in the second half, I assessed how I thought the half my unfold and change my score prediction to 27-24, Falcons. I still had a bad feeling about the game, though. I almost got it.
Let’s not blame this loss on Roddy White. Yeah, he should’ve caught that pass, but a lot of things should’ve happened differently yesterday. If the Falcons will learn from this loss, great.
The Falcons must beat Carolina on Sunday and need to do so to Tampa Bay after that. They also should beat the Chargers on the road. In fact, I’m not sure that they’re not favored in any remaining game this season.
I’d get the ball to Jerious Norwood more often—not on trick plays but on simple outside runs. Utilizing his speed should open things up more for Michael Turner—and the more things are opened up for Turner, the more they’re reciprocially opened for Norwood and, subsequently, the rest of the team, as it enhances the passing game and gives the defense more rest time.
The 1998 Falcons, by the way, should’ve beaten Denver. They lost their focus after climbing Mt. Minnesota, and Dan Reeves was a terrific coach for this team but was unduly scornful to Jamal Anderson and Chris Chandler. Anderson had every right to hold out for his signing bonus, and Reeves was out of line to try to draw a correlation to it concerning Jamal’s subsequent ACL tear—and Jamal took the high road when simply saying he thought Reeves’ comment was “unfortunate”, but it sure looks like Reeves held a grudge for no reason anyway, hence the way he unfairly and unprofessionally didn’t tell Jamal about his plan to draft T.J. Duckett.

In response to the second paragraph of my earlier post, that’s “might”, not “my”, and “changed”, not “change.” The last two sentences should’ve flown better, too.
Kurt Warner’s the odds-on MVP right now, but Matt Ryan has played as well or better.
Albert Pujols is one of the greatest ever, but he doesn’t deserve either of the MVPs he has. Hanley Ramirez and Ryan Howard deserved the MVP more than he did this year, and Andruw Jones was the MVP in 2005. When I look back on that year, Andruw comes to mind immediately, and as for individual accolades, Pujols makes a noticeably-secondary impression. Andruw was the MVP that year. A bunch of sportswriters might’ve voted otherwise, but their votes don’t change what happened on the field.

Each and everyday I look forward to reading Vick Supporter2 comments. Not so much Vick Supporter though because he doesn’t have the same passion or devotion for Vick. And you call yourself a fan, shame on you. Come hard or go home. Anyways VS2, I don’t care what anyone says about you, clearly no one appreciates your insight on “Matt” Ryan Leaf. Althouth I have to admit, if someone was willing to pay me 72 mil to play football I would bust too!!! Can’t blame him for that ya know. But you come with some clever stuff day in and day out that nobody would think of. And to make it worse nobody seems to take you serious all because of some little thing you have for your idol. I too was crushed the day I found out he would have to pay for his crimes. I thought to myself, “Hey, this is football and we have the fastest quarterback alive, he has to play”. I know you agree with me VS2, the guy was really fast. So f-ing what if he wasn’t accurate or couldn’t read a defense, even when we lost it still looked pretty. Ain’t that right VS2? Anyways stay on it VS2, stay angry and stay mad. Keep the wrath coming because Ryan would’t even be here if Vick wasn’t in prison. Don’t let up either, the second you do this blog will become lame and everyone will praise Ryan for being a franchise quarterback and leading the Falcons to winning records. I can’t stand these fans. News Flash people, MATT RYAN CAN’T RUN he can only pass accurately. Put that in your pipe and smoke it “Matt” Ryan Leaf fans. Strive to be #1 VS2 no more 2nd place. You better watch your back Vick Supporter cuz VS2 is gunning for you. VS2 in ‘09 Baby! Whooooooooooooooooo!!!!

I will make this as simple as I can. There is a Helluva lot of difference between 7-3 and 6-4. A 7-3 mark puts you in control of your own playoff destiny so to speak. A 6-4 slate means you are average and nothing more. Plus, a team like the Falcons, which has grown accustomed to losing, believe it is in the DNA, simply cannot afford to lose contests which are more than winnable. Yes, the team is doing much better than ANYONE expected. Myself included. No one knew Matt Ryan would make such an immediate impact or that the defense would not surrender 40 points per game. 500 yards, yes, 40 points, no. In fairness, the Falcons are are playoff team when they play with aggressiveness and determination. The team is a bust when it has mental and physical breakdowns like those in the last loss. Should fans expect playoffs? All depends on the next outing. If team falls to 6-5 then successful feel-good season win-wise becomes failure. *Why, because the team itself should expect more. If team goes to 7-4 then a playoff run is not only possible but probable. Poll question should be “Will” not “Can”. Yes, Falcons can defeat Panthers. Will they? Who knows? That is why loss which most want to sugarcoat distresses all true fans who look at the overall picture. If Falcons miss playoffs by a game I will forever hold Roddy “Butterfingers” White responsible. They paid the guy millions of dollars to do one damn thing! Catch the football. Elite receivers are judged by difficult receptions not easy ones. He failed everyone in the loss. Ryan put the ball where it could be caught. Keith “No Tackle” Brooking will remain a liability to a young defense. He may cost us several losses himself by being blocked out by one man, being out of position or being too damn slow. Oh well. Defend him. I respect what he has done in past but recent play has been embarrassing. Yes, I do watch EVERY play of every game. Have since first season. Oh well, hope Falcons pull it off. Playoffs would be nice. God bless.

Wat up Vick Supporter2! once again, you’re on top of your game, only bringing up the relevant stats. VS2 fan is backing you up bro, cause he nailed it —All that sissy Ryan can do is throw accurately, read defenses, lead by example as a rookie, be humble, etc. —you know, all that kind of crap. BUT you and me, VS2, we know the truth. So what, if Matt Ryan Leaf got lucky and made that perfect pass to beat the Bears with Tommie Harris all up in his face! So What!! Really, thats a play that any rookie qb could make! Please, people! VS2 could do that in his sleep! —But VS2, can you even imagine what our boy Vick would have done?!! -He wouldnt have thrown it like a sissy, He wouldve dropped back, done a cartwheel, jump over the d-line, zigged, zagged, and taken it to the HIZZITY HIZ HOUSE!!!!! Just like he always did when he played the Bears, … uh … I mean like he wouldve done to the Bears had he really wanted to. I heard, VS2, that our boy Vick is such a caring, humble guy that he PURPOSELY let Urlacher beat him like a dirty doormat JUST to make Urlacher feel better about himself! I heard that he did the same thing for Philly’s defense in the playoffs a couple of times too! Man, people dont realize what a great and unselfish guy Vick really was!! Makes me mad, VS2, it just makes me mad.
