So many chances

Here we go again. Not being able to score touchdowns is killing the Falcons. Field goals aren’t enough. Got to score a touchdown after the blocked punt especially. That’s a game-changing play, but the Falcons couldn’t make it happen. Only giving up a field goal was a huge confidence booster to the Panthers defense.

Again, the Falcons had their chances early. The Panthers were killing themselves with penalties, but the Falcons couldn’t take advantage of it. Matt Ryan delivered the passes, but the dropped passes are ridiculous, and Finneran falling 1 yard short on third down is crazy. He’s a big third-down receiver. He knows better. Harry Douglas has to hold onto those passes.

Looks like Ryan has found his favorite receiver in Roddy White, but he’s got to make the catches. He has to know that the passes are coming hard, and he has to be prepared to make the catches. The Falcons need him.

This team has potential to be a good team. They just can’t seem to get it together against good teams. Today would have been a great day for a win because the Panthers made so many big mistakes.

Did I mention how much I dislike Steve Smith. He always has a big play against us.

Nice rebound

The roller-coaster continues. We’re up this week. Good job, Falcons.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but you have to consider who they were playing. The offensive line needs to continue to protect for Ryan and open holes for Turner and Norwood like they did today.

And the defense held strong. The Chiefs were able to move the ball a lot, but the three interceptions helped. We’ll need to shore that up next week.

Maybe the extra time in the film room paid off for Ryan. This was another big confidence boost him and the team. Next week will be the big test for the Falcons going into Carolina.

I’m certainly not taking this win for granted, but it would be nice to see them be able to put this type of effort together against a good team — and on the road.

Rough game for Ryan

We knew there would be days like this, but after last week, I was overconfident. Ryan got off to a horrible start. You know it’s going to be a long day when your quarterback’s first completion is late in the second quarter. Turnovers were a killer.

I thought the defense gave the Falcons a chance to win this game despite falling behind 17-0. But the offense kept stuttering even with awesome catches by Robinson. Ryan showed some poise and elusiveness at times, but not getting into the end zone and having to settle for field goals isn’t going to win many games.

Where was the sense of urgency late in the fourth quarter? Have a couple of plays called and don’t huddle. It takes way too much time. We needed to score and quickly.

I really would have liked to see what Ryan could have done down by 8, but the defense just couldn’t hold the Bucs one more time.

Back at the Dome next week.

Nice surprise

Wow, I was cautiously optimistic, but I wasn’t expecting this at all. Three touchdowns in the first three possessions. Awesome!

Of course, this was the Lions, but in seasons past, these are the games the Falcons would struggle to win or not win at all.

Good to get one under our belt. No, Matt Ryan wasn’t flashy, but his throws looked crisp, and he didn’t turn the ball over. Besides, he didn’t need to do anything with Turner eating up the Lions like he did. It was really nice to see some positive emotion.

Defense will need to tighten up, but Jackson and Abraham gave them fits.

Great first win. Go Falcons.
