So many chances
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here we go again. Not being able to score touchdowns is killing the Falcons. Field goals aren’t enough. Got to score a touchdown after the blocked punt especially. That’s a game-changing play, but the Falcons couldn’t make it happen. Only giving up a field goal was a huge confidence booster to the Panthers defense.
Again, the Falcons had their chances early. The Panthers were killing themselves with penalties, but the Falcons couldn’t take advantage of it. Matt Ryan delivered the passes, but the dropped passes are ridiculous, and Finneran falling 1 yard short on third down is crazy. He’s a big third-down receiver. He knows better. Harry Douglas has to hold onto those passes.
Looks like Ryan has found his favorite receiver in Roddy White, but he’s got to make the catches. He has to know that the passes are coming hard, and he has to be prepared to make the catches. The Falcons need him.
This team has potential to be a good team. They just can’t seem to get it together against good teams. Today would have been a great day for a win because the Panthers made so many big mistakes.
Did I mention how much I dislike Steve Smith. He always has a big play against us.
Go Falcons!

Your right there, he has dropped a lot of passes that could have caused a different outcome in this game. They need to make some trades for a big time receiver that would get this team over the hump. White is the best they have and that is sad. He as improved a little. I already know other bloggers will say that Ryan sucks. He getting the ball to them almost everytime. They just can’t catch. They suck! The Falcons need that big time receiver that will be double teamed and leave other recievers wide open. The falcons will have very good in time.

Said it before, say it again. Without the threat of a TE in the passing game you limit what the WR’s can do especially in the Red Zone.
And again as I’ve written you can see that the Falcons are the team on the come. However what was with all of the falling down? Change the cleats already!

Miss me? Who was guarding Steve Smith? For that matter, how many of you clowns were guarding Steve Smith and still got burnt?
If I’m not a shutdown corner, then Houston and the other suckers trying to fill my shoes must not even be shutdown chasers :)
You guys could not stop those two receivers if you took away their credit cards.

COACHING HAD A LOT TO DO WITH THIS GAME. COMMON ON A 4TH AND 1, WE PASS??? WHY IS IT THAT THE PANTHERS COULD CATCH BALLS AND THE FALCONS KEPT SLIPPING??? WAS IT RAINING??? THE URGENCY ON COACHING AND PLAYERS WAS NOT THERE. SOME KICKOFF RETURNS COACHING WOULD NOT LET NORWOOD RUN. WHAT IS THIS TEAM WAITING ON???? I HATE SEEING THE FALCONS LOSE TO THE TOUGH TEAMS WHEN THEY ARE BEATABLE.

Quit your whining!!! When they dropped Mike Vick passes it was still his fault, so don’t blame White. When the Falcons lost it was Vick’s fault and when they won it was not his doing, so the team lives and dies with leadership and that leadership is at the quarterback position.
He is an intelligent thinker/articulate/drop back passer/gives good speeches, but 0-2 against teams other than Detroit/KC.

Vick and Blacks didn’t bring dog or c** fighting to the country. Does it go on? Yes.
Did Vick know that it was wrong?

A. Blank This and Tampa Bay were winable games. If you are going to blow this season exsperimenting with Ryan instead of playing Redman then you deserve to lose. Ryan is not ready but the team is. This is unfair to the rest of the team. Anyone of them risk a career ending injury at anytime while you are blowing games because you will stick with Ryan come hell or high water. I will not watch this train wreck much longer.

I was a huge Vick fan and defended him ad nauseam on these blogs. No matter what the did some people here were all over him. He won some games almost by himself and the Falons would probably have won that game today with him at QB. I heard Cowher and Shanahan compliment the guy after he’d beaten them.
He’s not here because of WHAT HE DID! Arthur Blank gave Vick everything and Vick lied to the man. Don’t have nothing to do with race.
I thought that the Falcons should have fixed the defense first but I WAS WRONG. Ryan is the guy and the Falcons are the coming team. No matter what I’m a fan of the Falcons. I want ‘em to win. A TE and the ability to get the ball to Norwood on the move and in space…
The Falcons will win.

O.K, enough is enough, Vick doesn’t play for the Falcons anymore, it’s going to be a tough year for our team!
THEONE you’re wrong on this one, I’m not a Vick fan or supporter but he did take all the heat even when his receivers dropped passes it was still his fault.
I guess it’s hard for “black” fans in Atlanta to support Ryan because the majority of white fans here never supported Vick!!!!!!
It’s going to be a very long season for the birds this year!

Matt Ryan made some pretty good throws in this game, but dropped passes by Roddy White and Harry Douglas killed two big drives for us. Also, Brian Finneran not getting to the first down marker was a big mistake on his part. I was also wondering what was up with all of the players slipping on the field. Michael Turner looked like he could have scored at one point in the first half, but he slipped and fell. Big missed opportunity.
Not to make excuses, but this game was officiated horribly for both teams. Even though I was glad that the early INT was negated, the hit that Julius Peppers put on Ryan was not roughing the passer. On the other side, Harvey Dahl did not hold his man on either of those two penalties he was called for. WTF is up with Ed Hochuli lately?
Here’s something else that baffled me: Why did the coaching staff choose to go away from the no huddle offense that they used in the first half? Seems like that kept the Panthers off balance and allowed us to drive down the field. Ryan ran it pretty well, so they should have stuck with it more.
I’m in total agreement with Bird Babe about how this team needs to learn how to finish drives with touchdowns instead of field goals. We don’t yet have the type of offense that can come back when we’re down by a lot, so it’s important to score as early and as often as possible. Next week doesn’t get any easier as we face a Green Bay team that’s lost two in a row, so you know they’ll be looking for a win. Aaron Rogers left today’s game with a shoulder injury, so it will be interesting to see which QB we end up facing next week.

I think this loss is an acceptable. We are where we are because the Falcons is an incomplete team. Matt Ryan is just not the kind of QB that can beat you. Of course, there were some dropped passes, but dropped passes are a part of the game. Mike Vick had passes dropped all of the time, but he was still judged harshly. And Vick HAD the talent to beat you by himself, and many times, he was asked to. Matt Ryan just doesn’t have the tools.
And to be perfectly honest, Matt Ryan should even have to. I think that Ryan needs the rushing attack to work well in order to keep pressure off himself in order to feel comfortable. Without the rushing attack, you’re relying on a quarterback that is a good quarterback, but the jury is still out as to even if he’s the best quarterback from the draft. You simply cannot rely on him to beat someone.
So my biggest fault is the rush. And the dropped passes. And the bad coaching. And the offensive line. Anyone but Matt Ryan, right? Right? Right?

And bad coaching? I don’t think so. Rcvrs gotta catch the balls when the QB puts ‘em on them. I agree with everything but that and under the circumstances the o-line too Manny.

Matty Ice is trying to prove he’s got an arm…so he’s rifling everything to his WR’s, especially after his “Pick 6” that was called back on some bullsh1t! He needs to learn how to put touch on the ball and when to release it. He’s not as smart as you guys try to make him out to be…if he was, he would release the ball before the receiver breaks not after the DB breaks…HE’S GARBAGE!!!

Matt Ryan Is A Rookie
He is playing well to be a starting Rookie Quarterback! I think his future will be bright, I wouldn’t have started him this season over Shockley but in time he will mature and gain confidence and truly lead the team.

It’s amazing to see some of these so-called fans say that Matt Ryan is garbage or that he’s a bust. 4 games into a rookie season is not even enough time to call someone a bust, especially at the QB position. Ryan is learning how to adjust from the college to the pro level, and I believe he’ll be just fine.
Even though this was a loss, I like the fact that this team just didn’t lay down and quit like last year’s team seemed to do. There’s a lot of fight in this squad, and in the next few years, they will definitely be a team to be reckoned with.

Some didn’t catch the irony. I blame the entire team, including Matt Ryan. Especially Matt Ryan. You know why? Because we cannot win when the defense keys on our running game. And even though he’s still a rookie, we don’t have a quarterback that can win the game.
See, with good teams, the passing game have to do well to open up our running game. Dropped passes or not, we couldn’t get it done.

Here’s the thing. This was one of those games that a young team is going to lose more often than not. The Babe is right, Douglas does need to catch the game changing pases, but I remember a time not too long ago when they were saying the same thing about White. I noticed a lot of slippage today. That was very bad field reconnaisance on the part of the Falcons. Whenever you see that much slippage, it usually means that the cletes just aren’t long enough to stick in the ground. The birds never made the adjustment. The holes were there for Turner, but it seems like he would either slip on his way to or through them. The footing just wasn’t there. Also, DO NOT underestimate having STeve Smith and Musim Muhammad on the same field. That duo always gave us fits. Now call me crazy, but I’m fairly proud of the the way that Houston and Grimes played today, particularly in the second half. They went up against what is the most underrated recieving duo in football and held their own, but this was one of those games where Atlanta should have gone after Delhomme. At the end of that game his uniform was still gleaming. I mean, Atlanta’s defensive line made their leftovers look like all pros. The coverage was decent, but when you give a good quarterback time to sit back and pat the ball, your end results are going to be what happened today, but like I said, this was one of those games that they figured to lose…

Oh, and btw, I can only pray that D Hall isn’t Me Angelo Hall. If it is, I’ve got a confession to make. You’re right, things are different now. Steve Smith only made Grimes look stupid once as opposed to the several times that he left you blacker than charcoal brickett, and neither Houston nor Grimes made themselves look stupid and hurt the team by foolish penalties against Smith. So yea, things are different here, and I think it’s a long term change for the better. Enjoy your time in Oakland. Who, knows, if you boys try hard enough you might even win as many games as we have already.

Oh why stop now,
Carolina if indeed that is your real name, how dare you come on this blog and act like your team did something extraordinary. You beat a young team that just now is learning how to play on the road while all the time making mistakes large enough to where if you’d been playin a more experienced team they would have eaten you up for breakfast and crapped you out before lunch. Now if you’re wondering where those confident Falcon fans are, I’m right here, and I will tell you with the utmost confidence that your wideouts, while great, are also aging and about as good as they’re ever going to be. Our corners while inexperienced, are VERY talented and are only going to get better with time. And by the way, it doesn’t take a lot of class to jump on a blog and dog out a team after a terribly officiated game in which your team played bad enough to loose. If you like we can pick this conversation up again after the teams meet in the Georgia dome. If God wills, I’ll be here win or lose. Better yet, let’s pick this up about two years from now when my boys are at the top of their game and yours have arthritis. Seriously, you should be careful how you gloat, time has a way of turning tables on folks.

Honestly I like Ryan but he seems to be an average qb to me. Like someone said above, he doesn’t have the tools to take over a game and beat the opposing team. He has a very low completion percentage and for the 20 or so passes completed today he didn’t even have 200 yards passing. The guy is putting up Joey type numbers. We have to find him another wr because Jenkins and the other guys just are not getting it done. Roddy cant be the only wr on this team that can make plays. The Falcons need a number 2 wr. I think Robinson could be that guy but he stays hurt wayy too much.
Is it safe to call Jamaal Anderson a bust now. This guy gets absolutely no pressure on the qb. Its time to sit the kid and let someone else start. I didn’t hear his name mentioned once nor did I see him in the backfield once today.

And for all of you folks masquerading as Atlanta fans that can’t stand Matt Ryan because he’s not Michael Vick, I’ll just tell you this. Get over it. All the boy can do is throw the ball, he can’t run out and catch it too. And was he supposed to lay astro-turf over the field so that his offense wouldn’t slip and slide all over the place? Ryan did the best that he could under the circumstances. He’s going to be a good one. At least he’s here, unike some people that USED to play quarterback for us.

Back2Life, whether the Falcons win or lose, I believe they’re heading in the right direction. Last season, there was absolutely no direction for this squad. Now we’ve got a new regime in place that will elevate this team. So far, we’ve won the games that we should have won, and even in the two losses, we still looked better than last season. I’m looking forward to seeing this team develop.

OK, so Matt Ryan isn’t perfect, but you can’t blame him for this loss. He has shown that he has what it takes to be a good NFL quarterback who can help the Falcons win.
No, he can’t do it by himself. He needs help from the defense. The Panthers ran all over them today.
He has to better protected. The running game needs to be established early to help the passing game. The passing game by itself is not going to win games. It has to be a balanced attack.
If he puts the ball where it needs to be, the receivers need to catch it. The tight end needs to get involved. That’s what made Alge such a big part of this team. He made big catches.

Dear Arthur Blank:
Today’s performance was nothing short of pathetic! For years I had to listen to “he is too short” “he is not a pocket passer”.
When the receivers they would blame me and say I had no touch on my passes. They would even blame me when we lost, but never give me credit for the wins. I knew what it was about, so that’s why I gave them the middle finger. I mean, who wants to be called racial names, and just take it?
My worst season as a starter was in 2006 when I had a 7-9 record. Nothing to be proud of at the time, but this is the second season without me and this team still has not won a total of 7 wins yet, both seasons combined.
I would NEVER want to play for this sorry team again. They wanted an articulate/drop back slow passer/intelligent guy - so enjoy.

This game begins and ends with the pass rush, or lack thereof. The coaching staff, our former defensive coordinator head coach included, did not have the team prepared for what Carolina did, nor did they react well on more than a couple of series throughout the game. When the Falcons D was sent pressure, Carolina threw quickly, when the Falcons D was expecting a quick drop, D’homme dropped deep and had all day to wait for crossing receivers and double moves. The defense looked confused almost every time Carolina dropped back to pass. Anybody who wants to blame this one the corners doesn’t really see the whole game. The players take it on themselves to perform, but they have to be put in situations where they can reasonably be expected to perform. Those young guys were right on the spot most of the game, despite the complete lack of any distraction offered to D’homme by our def line. Yes they do need to play better, especially getting their heads around to make plays on the ball instead of the receiver, but the Defense today failed from the pass rush backwards, not the other way around.
The offensive play calling was actually better this game with one notable exception. The Falcons did not even try to attack the endzone until the very end of the game. That is completely inexcusable. I don’t know if the coaches called plays that just weren’t executed, or if the plays were never called, but there was never any real attempt to press this week. They same thing happened against Tampa. When they play at home, they are far more aggressive, and I can only come to the conclusion that it is game plannin to try to protect a young team on the road, and it’s back firing. conservative isn’t this team’s good look. I would rather they go balls to the wall every play and get blown out than look listless and lackluster while keeping the game close.
This team has players and play-makers. They didn’t show up today. The play-makers on offense missed too many opportunities. The ones on defense never had a chance. This team plays differently at home, and they need to take that same fire and push it to the limit on the road. This is a young team, with young coaches, I expect to see this improvement happen this year, and we will win some road games late in the year. I’ll put this squad up against anybody in the Dome.

Roddy did have some drops but he also had 7 catches. It’s not like he was dropping gimmes though. Ryan wasn’t completely accurate today…Roddy caught one very low thrown ball for a first down when it was thrown at the ground, he didn’t catch another after it hit him in the chest after he slipped. Douglas dropped the easy, good passes.
Turner and Roddy were both slipping. Two holding penalties on the long drive by the same OL KILLED the Falcons. They had momentum but it was taken away.
Red zone offense and secondary need work. Receivers will get there as Ryan gets better with his throws. Just because you throw the ball near the WR doesn’t make it a good throw…it’s about touch, placement, etc.
There is a lot of potential for this team.

I posted last week that the Falcons will lose 12 in a row. I still feel the same way. I also predicted that you fair weather Falcons fans would blame the coaches for the lose and you are. it s not the coaches fault. Matt Ryan should not be the starter it should be Chris Redmon. Coach Smith is a very good coach, but he cannot afford to start his career with a 3-13 or 4-12 record. You people will drag him under the bus. Your QB play is the reason for the lose. His play limits the play calling and gives the opposing defense the advantage of packing the middle of the field and the line of scrimmage. The patsy party is over until we meet St. Louis at the end of the season. Don’t think for one minute that this team will beat the Raiders in Oakland that is not gonna happen. Matt Ryan is not ready to be a starting NFL QB, and don’t give me the Troy Aikman and Payton Manning won very few games there first year comparisons. Matt Ryan will never be able to hold their jock straps. I also feel that Coach Smith would rather have the vet Redmon in there but you know Sir Arthur will have non of that. e is the reason this franchise suck. Damn wish we could fire an owner.

I think Coach Smith is doing a good job. He kind of reminds me a little be of the no nonsense Norm Van Brocklin from the 70’s. At least the Falcons have a coach now and are playing organized football. People should stop hating on Matt Ryan. The situation that preceded him was not his fault. Venting anger at him makes you just as bad as the one’s that belittled MV7 from the day he got here. Maybe it’s time to move on, the team is trying. Well, its on to Green Bay.

Hey Vick Supporter 2, if you are ready to discount Ryan after four career starts, that tells me that you’d given up on him before he took his first snap. Now granted Ryan isn’t Vick, or Farve, or either of the Manning boys, but guess what, after their first three starts, they weren’t all that either. For those of you die hard Vick fans that just can’t get over the fact that he’s gone, marinate on this, he didn’t care enough about this team or this city to keep his nose clean and stay out of trouble. He doesn’t deserve my respect, admiration, or loyalty, and if you look deep down, you’d see that he doesn’t deserve yours either. As for me, I’m a Falcons fan, 5-11, 2-14, 0-16, doesn’t matter, this is my team and I’m going to back them. And if the rest of you can’t do any better than to be silent when they win and tear them down when they lose, then, I think I speak for the rest of the true Falcon fans when I say get the hell off our blog!

This blog is not meant exclusively for those that write, Go Falcons after each game. Did you see all the empty seats last week in the dome. Many True Falcon fans feel just like me and many others. You cannot move on from a player if he is still technically on your team. I don’t wanna her any of that Mr. Blank is still trying to get the money from him crap. That MV7 situation is deeper than what the management is pretending.

Just keeping it real.Matt Ryan is a big mistake for the falcons. This kid has no kind on foot work when he throws the ball.I do agree with one of the other bloggers who said we should have gotten someone on defense. This kid Anderson on the end should just leave. The only way he can touch any quarterback is by shaking their hands before the game or not at the name.Someone should like a match and put this coach on fire so he can get this team to be more aggresive on the road and at home.Any team today would have beaten Carolina if they would have putted pressure on their quarterback.Jake doesn’t play well when a team is puttin pressure on him.He is among the best with wins if no pressure is being applied to him.Atlanta has to blitz more due the lack of pressure up front and Ab is doing a great job.The other DE need to be replace and that the bottom line because Wilson said so.Wilson 9:11 we need so help lol.

In response to the people who ask what being a true Falcons fan really means: I don’t expect true fans to blindly support the team. I welcome any legit criticism that fans have to offer about this team. Hell, I’ll be one of the first ones to admit that I wasn’t very fond of the fact that Matt Ryan was selected as our first pick. I wanted us to beef up our D line, then go after a QB in a later round. I felt that the Ryan pick was mainly a PR move by Arthur Blank. After watching this team in the preseason and 4 regular season games, I can admit that I do like the Ryan pick now. I think that he will end up developing into a pretty good QB once he has some seasoning under his belt. One of my main issues is that this team doesn’t have the die hard fan base like the Packers, Steelers, etc. This city has a lot of fair weather fans who will support the team when they’re good, but as soon as they head downhill, they jump off the bandwagon. Those are the ones that I feel are not true fans.
Also, I don’t have a problem with people criticizing Matt Ryan, but for the love of God, please refrain from using the “Bust” label for him. No player can be labeled a bust 4 games into his rookie season. If he hasn’t developed in 3-4 years, then yes, feel free to call him a bust, but for now, give him a chance to learn and develop.

@bigeasy. Dorsey may one day be a great player, but that’s got nothing to do with today’s game. I don’t care who was in there, it was a poor defensive scheme and they wouldn’t have been able to do any different. Is Dorsey somewhere sacking QB’s doing one and three step drops? I hadn’t seen that on Sportscenter.
I do know who you are talking about and I wear his jersey every Sunday. But Norwood is a playmaker, Turner is a playmaker, Roddy White can be a playmaker and put in the right situations Ryan has shown that he can make at least some of the necessary plays. Abraham is a playmaker, Gravy is a playmaker, Lawdog is a playmaker. How many teams have much more than that? We’ve got some deficiencies (certainly need a tight end, but that ain’t gonna happen this year so we must live with that), but the biggest problem I saw today was lack of that killer instinct this team has shown at home. And don’t give me that crap about beating bad teams, because those bad teams were universally picked to beat the Falcons.

Well, it’s about time for me to drink my ovaltine and go to bed, but let me set the record straight on a couple of things.
Lloyd if indeed that is your real name, one of the great things about living in this country is that you can say, and most importantly, think what you want. No, you don’t have to agree with me to be a Falcon fan, but it would make you sound a lot less stupid, and you’d be right, for once.
Okay, bigeasy830, I don’t know what you saw when you watched the game today. I saw a team that didn’t quit. Now, my own personal philosophy is that as long as they don’t quit on me, I’m not quitting on them. Now, if you feel as many of the folks on this blog obviously do that calling Matt Ryan a bust and a draft day mistake and a 72 million dollar waste of money is going to inspire him to greatness, well, you and your buddies can just keep going with that. Me, if I were Matt Ryan, that kinda talk from people that I was working for would inspire me, to put a gun to my head and pull the trigger. Here’s the thing, I believe that being a fan of a team means not only cheering them when they win, but cheering them when they try. They tried today, and had they played a little bit smarter, they would have had a bonified chance to win. Tell you what, if you and your buddies want to sale out the home team, you do that, but don’t come crawling back when they’re seasoned enough to contend. Got it?

Hi Bird Babe. First, cut Keith “No Tackle” Brooking and Roddy “Another Drop” White. Leave their sorry A+++S in Carolina! Matt Ryan is a weak-armed P+++Y! Sorry piece of S++T. The so-called coach is a complete braindead moron for settling for field goals. F+++++G P+++Y! The Falcons are quitters, losers, heartless, ball-less, gutless, prideless, clueless, hopeless, defenseless, punchless and brainless! Send that damn overrated runningback back to wherever the Hell he came from. What a waste! This Falcon defensive bunch will probably make the fourth string Packer QB look like Brett Favre in his prime. Oh, there is one thing these no-talents are not…professional athletes. Matt Ryan looked HORRIBLEm, just like I predicted, and you people are making excuses for him, like I predicted. “Its the reciever’s fault” I guess is your excuse for Matt “Field Goal” Ryan for this week. Last I heard, he supposed to have great touch and accuracy, Vick looked a whole lot better to me, and deep down, you people know it.
You people blamed Vick for this very thing, yet you make excuses for Ryan. Matt Ryan is no Mike Vick. like I’ve always said……………………………… No Vick = Losing Season. Matt Ryan = Losing Season

The Falcons played poorly to day.The defence could not stop them we had no pass rush the corners were to small to cover the pass.On offence Ryan had a lot of passes that should have been caught but he needs to stay in the pocket and quit geting happy feet and his arm looks a little weak to me after watching farb throw. Some people are seeing things i don’t see they say this team don’ quit it looked to me like they layed down earley in the 4th quarter.on this day the panthers could have been had But we came unprepared. The effort was just not there today.Sorry every body for beening so negative but i have been watching this team since 1966 and it feels like were starting a new franchise allover again gets old.

Let me tell you about what comes to my mind when the word, “potential,” is tossed around: Brad Kominsk (Braves failure). Potential is “what could have been … if only ….” “If” is also what could be, like next week … we could potentially suffer another embarassing loss, or another big lead and hold onto victory.
The reality is the Falcons have receivers who drop passes. The reality is the Falcons have defenders that forget how to tackle at inopportune times during a game. The reality is the Falcons have the potential to win somewhere between 2 and 5 games this year. “If” it comes down to getting the number one position in next year’s draft, then they potentially could win 2 of the last 3 games, to spoil that potential minor satisfaction.

We just can not seem to beat Carolina, Tampa Bay or New Orleans. It’s been that way for a few years now. Until we figure out how to beat them, we can forget about winning the division.
Clearly Matt Ryan has the tools and ability to someday be a really good QB in this league, that time is not now. Let’s give Shockley or Rednon a chance and allow Ryan a chance to learn the nfl way a little while longer.

Give Finn a break, he hasn’t had alot of playing time for 2 years! He knows he messed it up & it wouldn’t happen again. They should’ve gone to him again on 3rd down, it’s his bread & butter. I detest the playcalling. I predicted this would happen, shut down the run & we’ve got nothing. A few big passes here & there but otherwise, nil. I do miss Alge Crumpler! Ryan got happy feet after a while, too. It’s pathetic that they lost 2 starting o-lineman & we still couldn’t lay a hand on Delhomme!! We need another end who can rush, start the Beerman! I am also sick of seeing Brooking trail every play. Where was Michael Boley? Coleman did make a few good plays. Chris Houston, just tackle the receiver, quit trying to put your hand up to knock the ball down while running behind the guy while he sails into the endzone!! It was a learning day for Grimes, total mismatch with Muhammed who showed you can be over 30 & still a good receiver! Grimes hung tough, though, love the way he plays. Where are the screen passes? We can’t be so predictible on 1st down, it is so obvious what we’re going to do! The Eagles need a running back, let’s see if they have any interest in Snelling who is good but wasted behind Turner & Norwood. What can we get for him? D-line?? Tight end? Why are we running the ball while we’re behind at the end of the game? Aren’t we trying to win? Mularkey certainly fits his name.

By Algonquin J. Calhoun, you are one of the dumbest and hateful people on this blog week in and week out. Vick’s record may was 15 and 17 his last 2 years with a coach and an offensive coordinator that was not worth a damn, but After the Falcons go 3-13 or 4-12 with Matt Ryan what will you call him after they fire a very good coach in Coach Smith in another year to appease you idiots. We will not win with Matt Ryan as QB, him being a rookie is part of the problem but also I am still not sold on his arm strength. But, to look at Vick’s worth to the team look at the record after he left the team, even the year after with the exact same players we were 4-12. You still don’t get it do you. I did not think so. Take the hate out your heart man. Take the sheet off. Stop looking at Sarah Palin’s legs. Accept the truth. It is what it is.

this stuff is nuts; do the math: 8 home games and 8 away; if you win 6 home you need to split on the road to get to 10 wins; if you win 4 of 6 in the division you need to go 6 of 10 with the rest of the league; every season is a progression; if we progress, hold home field, we can be competative; this team doesn’t seem to quit, seems to like it’s coaching; if they can reduce the mental mistakes they can be competative; WHY DOES EVERYONE WANT TO BE NEGATIVE ABOUT THIS TEAM?

I am sick of you people…..
When the Falcons win, it was because it was an easy team, and everyone made Ryan look good.
When we lose, it is Ryan’s fault no matter what. Fact of the matter is, the receivers let Ryan down, read the article Roddy White said it himself, “that was on us”. Don’t even call him a bust yet, Peyton Manning had 29 INT’s his first year as a rookie, and Ryan only has 2 thus far. Far better than Mannings record. Also, the penalty for negating the TD INT was indeed a good call, Matt Ryan got nailed in the face, even the announcers said that it was clear as day, if you notice it shook Ryan up a little on the play. Matt Ryan hit guys in the chest on a few plays for first downs yet the receivers dropped them, how is that Ryan’s fault??? He can’t run out there and catch it. BTW, whoever said Matt Ryan will never be good because he can’t win the game by himself is a tool… Football is a team effort not an individual effort. You are truly ignorant to how football really works. I can’t tell how many games I saw the Falcons lose because Vick took the game into his own hands, he would always fumble or some crap.
Also, nobody cares about what Vick did… fact of the matter is it’s done for him. Matt Ryan is already a better leader and a better team players than Vick ever was simply because… he’s not locked up in a penitentiary and Ryan is actually still playing football. Don’t compare stats of Ryan to Vick because they did not start in the same situation. Vick sat a year, and Ryan has not. In my opinion Ryan is adjusting well, and what other rookie QB could run the no-huddle as well as Ryan handled it???
All the slipping on the rec. and RB corps was absolutely ridiculous. Recievers have to catch the ball, the HAS to be a pass-rush, and we need to learn to tackle. Very fixable problems. Those phantom holding calls on Harvey Dahl killed our chance to score. We shot ourselves in the foot on this one, it is not all Ryan’s fault, the receivers need to learn to actually catch, we need to commit to the run game, 41 passes will not cut it, and we need a pass rush and better corner play from Houston.
Have great day guys, next is Green Bay. We will take our lumps this year. We will be fine, the TEAM just needs to find it’s gameplan for the road.

Well Falcons…its going to be a long season! I just dont understand how people that have fault with this years Falcons as not being "Falcon Fans". You have to understand the VICIOUSNESS that MV was receiving on this blog on a daily basis! Not just poor throwing and QB mentality, but overall intelligence, and lack of intelligence of the entire population of blacks in Atlanta and the nation...this went on DAILY! I mean it was a virtual Bell Curve(Klan) rally on here from day 1 with MV. The same receivers were dropping passes THEN....the offensive line was wide open like it is NOW!(he was running for his life) The defense was just crappy, secondary and linebackers laying down! Its funny that all these problems are now being documented and used...Its not like I dont like Matt Ryan…Its just this “good natured” lets pull the wagons around our QB behavior was NEVER offered to MV? He was evicerated and gutted on this blog every single day of the guys career as a Falcon! It was MVs fault....for virtually EVERYTHING! offense, defense, coaching, uniforms, EVERYTHING! PERIOD! There was no mercy given...he was called the N word so much on here fans were complaining to the AJC... and they never stopped it! lol...we arent talking about a couple of posters…it was the MAJORITY! This is really the same TEAM, yet MV was blamed for not reaching (I am serious) the Super Bowl! are you kidding me…lol…It was so bad that any other QB on the roster was held to be the second coming of Brett Farve…can you say Matt Shaub! Posters were actually predicting that this guy would take someone to the playoffs or the Super Bowl….they were actually saying this type of crap on THIS blog!!That is what Mike Vick had to deal with on a daily basis…That is why the people who were Falcon Fans then are shaking their heads at the obvious double standard here…nobody was upset then….the Falcons and Atlanta teams will continue to be cellar dwellars until the attitudes change…off the feild! These attitudes which led to the release of Algea Crumpler…how IDIOTIC was that…go figure! Going to be a long season….

Another Ironic Thought:
To all of those who are biased based upon race-
Take Matt Ryan’s name off the posts. Now, replace Matt’s name with Michael Vick.
See? It looks just like 2006, all over again!
In other words, if you thought Mike Vick was primarily responsible for the losses, because he was the leader of the team, you gotta place the blame on this loss on Matt Ryan.
However, if you thought that the Falcons loss because Mike Vick had receivers that dropped the ball too much, you gotta give Matt Ryan a break, too.

Matt Ryan should give Vick some of that $70 million to return when he is back and the rest to get a better defense lol.On the real Matt Ryan will be an average quaterback at best because he don’t have the arm strength and he will be forcing alot of bad throws in the near future.Falcons always had problems keeping the right players because they love saving money than winning.Business is Business.

Well that game certainly didn’t turn out well. Delhomme looked like an All Pro out there with no pass rush and the DB’s made Muhammad look like he did 10 years ago. No way you can let Muhammad do that to you. Need to get a pass rush on QB’s. I don’t even think Delhomme was hit or hurried one time all day. Defense has to step up when you are facing an offense with only 1 real playmaker (Smith)
On the offesne side of the ball Rya has to lead the team to more TD’s instead of FG’s. It’s his job. Yes he is a rookie playing behind an average line at best…but his job is to lead TD drives not FG drives. There where some dropped passes for sure. Those drops could have helped sustain drives that could have lead to more points but you can’t paly the woulda coulda game when it coems to sports. Bottomline is you aren’t goingt o beat anyone in the NFL only putting up 9 points. The defense made Delhomme look like an All Pro. They did a fairly good job at stopping the run, but were burned on the pass all day for the most part.
Coaching wasn’t the reason they lost….they lost becasue of these reasons I think
Other than that Falcons got beat up on and you have to take the bad with the good.

By DawgBoy, Thank you for putting that so well. My main point is this. I am a Falcons fan. But, I will not praise a team that I think is a bad team. That is not the way to make them better. We cannot blindly support a terrible team. Would you continue to go too a place of business that continued to give you a bad product and terrible service. In a way it is the same concept except in this case I refuse to change to allegiance of teams as some of you have suggested. I will criticize this team to the end until we are a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl.
Many of you want the city to move on from the Mike Vick era. I can understand your point of view. Put, the best way to do that is for this team to win games. When Dan Reeves took over this team, he signed many veteran free agents because he said this franchise had a culture of losing and the fans would not stand for another rebuilding process. He was right then and it is true for now also. We drafted Ryan so be it. But he is not ready to lead a team. We should have started Chris Redmon and had Ryan sit and learn from a vet, like Chris Chandler was. I love Coach Smith and his staff, with Redmon as our QB I think we could be 3-1 maybe 4-0. The rookie is just not ready, face it. Coach Smith cannot take a 3-13 or 4-12 season, if you read some of these post many people are throwing the coaching staff under the bus already. The coaching staff are calling some of those plays to protect your QB because they know his strengths and weaknesses. They know every time he throws a down and out bad things happen, like yesterday and the 3rd game of the preseason. So when we play a decent defense, Turner nor Norwood will get many yards unless they break a long one, because the defenses are geared up to stop them because of the weaknesses of the QB. The coach is giving you what you asked for and thats your rookie as the starter now don’t drag him under the bus for it.

Hey bigeasy,
You think Redman, not Redmon, would have made those receivers catch those dropped balls any better??? If so, please explain. You are an idiot. You know nothing about football. You wanna be a coach??? Don’t quit your day job. These guys in the front office know what they are doing, they’ve been doing it for a long time. So until you have the same experience as they do, just shut up.
You think the head coach of the Colts was kicking himself when Manning threw 28 INT’s his first year? Probably not, he knew he had a good choice and I firmly stand by Dimitroff and Smitty with Ryan. Smitty and Dimitroff did not make a decision based on what the fans wanted, trust me. That’s the thing you Vick supporter’s, everything is a conspiracy against Vick. None of your can accept the fact that HE screwed up so you blame his downfall on Arthur, the faithful fans of the Falcons, the Ryan pick, and pretty much anything that negates Vick’s presence in Atlanta.
Either get behind the team, because WE ARE heading in the right direction or just keep your mouth shut. Frankly, all of us are tired of reading this crap you are dishing out on these blogs, about how you want Ryan to fail to fulfill some personal vendetta against the Falcons for their supposed cause of Vick’s downfall. I am not necessarily talking to you on this one Bigeasy.
Fact of the matter is, we are rebuilding. We have a lot of young guys on the team, outside of Ryan. There were plenty of rookie mistakes yesterday outside of Ryan, i.e. Harry Douglas dropping a first down pass, that will be ironed out with experience on the road. The play callers are still trying to figure out the team gameplan on the road, they are a new staff working with new coaches and whatnot and will take some time to figure out the right calls. I am behind the Falcons 0-16, 4-12, or whatever it may be. I trust what we are doing, I’m buying in, and I personally believe we are making the right moves.

LLoyd,
I don’t have to make excuses for Ryan on this one. What you saw yesterday was not all Ryan’s fault. A potential scoring drive was taken away by two holding calls, which were invisible to me, on Dahl. Stalled that drive, we took 3. Next, Harry Douglas stops a drive when he failed to catch a ball thrown in stride for an easy first down. Stalled that one. Next, D Hall drops a pass right in the numbers for a first down, stalls that one. Do I need to go on for you idiots??? I agree Ryan had his share of mistakes on Sunday, but for me to quit on Ryan like you bandwagon Fans are aint happening. Everyone screwed up yesterday, not all Ryan. Again, another positive thing Ryan did as a rookie yesterday was run a no huddle, why the quit I don’t know, but I know there aren’t too many rookies out there confident to run a no huddle with only 4 games of experience.
Yes, as a matter of fact I am still laughing. I am laughing at all of you. This was one game. I will be laughing in the next few seasons when you all finally realize that the Falcons are a great team and have looked like a team for the first time since Vick was here. They were never a team with Vick and it showed last year. I will also laugh when Vick is playing in the UFL or some crap league. Did you hear how Vick is auctioning his crap to pay bills, funny isn’t it? In case you are wondering, yes! I am laughing at that as well.
UPTOWNDOWNTOWN, You sir, are just stupid. Sorry. Arm strength isn’t just throwing the ball deep, you moron. It’s how hard you throw the short one’s as well. Can your dumb@$$ pee-wee’s throw bullets like a grown man? Nope, sorry. uptowndowntown,
What has Ryan done to make you think otherwise??? What pass has he thrown CONSISTENTLY, not just one pass, to make you think he has a weak arm after 4 games in the NFL? If you think he has a weak arm, do you think the coaches would let him be out there playing right now??? Obviously you see and a lot of others seem to see something that the coaches with actual NFL experience are missing. I am so curious as to what it is! If you or anyone else could enlighten me, go ahead. You all must have learned so much sitting in your arm chairs every Sunday, that somehow it has misled you all to think that you know more a whole coaching staff.
UPTOWN, you are a big pee wee man it sounds like. You must know so much about arm strength watching 9 year olds throw the ball that you can somehow decide that NFL players have weak arms. I expect a good reason from you and all of your PEE WEE experience. So please without further argument, I digress.

Go Falcons 610, I could be wrong but I believe that you and GT610 may the the same blogger. If that is the case why the name change from game to game. Who was head coach of the colts Manning’s first year. Do you know that. It was Jim Mora Sr. He was an established NFL coach at the time. Now the Colts going 13-3 that next year greatly helped him keep his job a couple of more years. Also you people love to pull up the fact that Manning threw 28 or 29 ints. Did you also know he threw for more than 3700 yards and 26 TDs. Don’t compare Matt Ryan to Payton until he starts averaging more than 200 yards and a TD per game consistently. Matt Ryan can’t hold Payton Manning jock. I expect a rookie QB to make mistakes. But do you and the rest of the bloggers expect it or understand the dynamics of the game. You people are throwing Coach Smith under the bus. Look at the coaches that will be fired before the season end. Today the Rams have already fired their coach after a couple of years. Coach Smith needs to win games now before you people drag him under the bus. You all have all the optimism in the world after a win but blame everyone under the sun for a loss except the main person responsible and thats the rookie QB.
Now, if Aaron Rogers is out next week we may have a chance against GB, even if the game is on the road. GB has a good defense. But, if we can have the rookie QB manage the game with no turnovers. I feel like we can possibly steal that one. It will be a very low scoring game but safe throws from our rookie QB will get it done. I like that comeback pass on the sidelines we used last week. That was our best pass play that we utilized during the game. See our coaching staff is top notch. I love Coach Smith. But, people like you Go Falcons610 is the reason a dumbass like Matt Millen kept is job for so long in Detroit, torturing those poor fans for years. I will be critical because I am a fan of the team and it is my right to do so.

610, my entire point is that Ryan has the arm strength of the average adult QB.. You cant possibly believe the propaganda that he has a, “STROONG” arm! People are just trying to find him a strength right now.. You know as well as i do who and what teams have QB’s with strong arms and you know what their passes look like.. Ryan may even be third in arm strength on his own team..Im not saying the dude is a bust, but arm strength cant be the best thing he has going for himself.. that cant be the only thing announcers can talk about because… nevermind man.. You dont understand

bigeasy830 you said it right when you said if Matt can manage the game but that can only happen if Turner and Norwood can have a big day rushing. Every team out there is reading the blue print stop the run and make the rookie beat us.

Does anyone think Vick improved during the four something years he was here?

Actually in order of Arm strength D.J. hands down has the strongest arm on the team. That is not a homer opinion as a DAWG fan.
Plain and simple on arm strength alone Shock wins that one.
AS far as Vick getting better. Some statistics he did some he didn’t. His completion % dropped a few points. His INT’s went up a few each year with about an average of around 12. His yards dropped a bit from his 2002 year. His TD’s went up though which says he was leading TD drives and not FG drives. So in that aspect yeah he improved which is really important as a QB grows I think. Plus you can’t take into affect his ground game. That was a whole nother deminsion that was un heard of.
So I say he improved in some areas…that maybe numbers don’t show…..but didn’t improve in other areas that QB numbers do show that I ithnk most would agree QB’s need to imrove on.
Ryan will improve. No doubt.

By Lloyd, if Aaron Rodgers is out or if his play is limited due to his injury. We will not need too much offense to steal a game in GB. But did you see the MNF game. Flacco looked very impressive. He made som rookie mistakes, but like in the preseason game against us the Ravens allow Flacco to attempt all the throws because he has sucha astrong arm. They are taking the traing wheels off and letting Flacco run the offense. I think we were gonnna do the same with Ryan last week but that pick 6 that was called baked scared us. We are gonna have to take the training wheels off it is limiting our offense. If Ryan is gonna be the starter then we will just have to take our lumps during the growing pains. Let him throw it outside and down field. Coaach Smith can’t keep protecting him. As you see everyone is dragging the coaching staff under the bus for it.

bigeasy,
I never said anything about the coaching staff. If anything I have praised the coaching staff. I am praising the whole team. But, all everyone want’s to talk about his how Ryan screwed this game up, and I am here to tell you dumb@$$ not to throw our starting QB under the bus. You hypocrite. Yep I am the same blogger as GOTECH610, I just forgot to change my tag on that one comment you moron.
Bigeasy, do you think that letting the rookie run a no-huddle in the NFL 4 games in was not trying to take the training wheels off? I am sorry, what game were you watching. I don’t see Flacco running an no-huddle yet. That pick six that wasn’t was not a “take the training wheels off” throw. It was a rookie mistake. It is idiots like you expect a team with and entirely new system, staff, and rookies to compete with veteran team their first year. Shows what you know.

By GOFALCONS610, I it is obvious you know nothing about football. There is an obvious difference in the type of passes that Flacco and Ryan are attempting. Flacoo throw the down and outs and every pass and play in the Ravens arsenal. That is what I meant when I wrote, take the training wheels off. The coaching staff for the Falcons only call plays that require Ryann to make safe what is called safe throws. You dumba$$. Keep the same blog name, don’t be a coward. I don’t believe that lame excuse.

Who knows if Matt Ryan is going to be good, great, bad or Joey Harrington at this point? Nobody. You cannot judge someone after 4 games. I love the “football fans” than cannot realize ANY OF THIS. Once again he’s a rookie, taking his lumps and learning on the job. I love all the hate for Ryan. It’s classic. The coaching staff finally has this team playing with HEART and never giving up. Yes, they make mistakes at points (the 4th and 1 pass) and so does every player, it’s going to happen with a young team. This team, FINALLY has direction, finally has some discipline and this team has character. They WONT WIN A LOT OF GAMES THIS YEAR. Not many 4-12 teams go on to win 10 games the next year, just doesn’t happen. Again, I love the “football” fans on this blog who think that you just go from 4-12 to 10-6. They gutted the roster after last season and like it or not it’s going to take time to get this team to winning again. Kudos to Dmitroff (I know, I can’t spell his name) and Smith. They have a plan, they will stick to it for the next 4 to 5 years and NOT vear from it. The falcons will be good again within the next 2 years. Love the Vick fans on this too. I LOVED MIKE VICK, but he is gone, move on. Lol, it’s shows a lot of ignorance to come on these blogs week after week and all you can say is Matt sucks and Vick is the greatest and “i told you so”. I’m sure all the Vick supporters can be a little bit more creative? Maybe all of you should go to whatever jail he’s in and picket in front, until he’s freed. I mean it’s totally injust right? Didn’t he admit he was guilty, lol? Go picket, that’ll make you feel better and let fans enjoy good blogs and some football talk. Hate and ignorance is all around us and it will never go away I guess, sad.

bigeasy830 I agree with you. Let’s take the training wheels off a bit. We will start to see a bit better what Ryan has. Flacco last night was solid, a few mistakes but much better than I thought. I was very, very suprised at the end of the game (regulation) that they basically sat on it instead of letting him run the 2 minute drill. They might have won, the steelers D was Dragging for sure.

Football illiterates and bigeasy830 maybe the coaches see something in practice that warrants the training wheels. I’ll admit I havent been a fan of Matt I felt Redman would’ve made us more competitive this year. Last week alot you were happy that we won two games now you change your tune to it’s a rebiulding year. That’s what I see as but so far I don’t see what alot of you see in Matt. In the two wins he merely just manage the game you can’t expect to have big running games everyweek. Sometimes the passing game has to open up the running game.

No other player matters. MV7 has street cred. Laws don’t matter. Being half retarded don’t matter. Every other player in the league can’t hold his jock - cause I am wearing it over my head right now. Word.

By Football illiterates and By Lloyd, good points. I believe we share the same view point. Good talking football with you. Next week hopefully we can continue this discussion after a Falcon victory.
Al Davis is one crazy a$$ old man but that press conference gave us a sneak peek into the running of a team with a meddling owner. Now we know why Petrino jumped ship so abruptly. I cannot believe Al Davis threw that out there like that. That was the most cold blooded, jaw dropping press conference I have ever seen. Like I said earlier Al Davis is a crazy a$$ old man but I gotta respect his gangsta. the NFL has become a 12 month long, year round soap opera. When MV7 is close to being released in 09. It is going to get crazy. Him still being on the roster is deeper than Arthur Blank just trying to get that money back. Trust me.

Great propaganda piece on Keith “No Tackle” Brooking. Who wrote this trash? Whoever did would have been wonderful as publicist for Adolph Hitler during the early 1940s as minister of propaganda. What garbage! Good old NT is a liability to the Falcons or any other team. He has not made a meaningful (game-changing) tackle in decades! NT is slow, untalented, soft and, I suspect, senile. So shake his hand, pat his fanny then send him on his way. Get a player in the lineup who is UNAFRAID to tackle! Defense has sucked thus far. Claude Humphrey and John Zook would be ashamed!

The Mike Vick era is officially over. Say goodbye to Mike Vick and say hello to Matt Ryan. Knowone really knows how great Ryan will be. Remember when another Ryan came out (Ryan Leaf) and was unable to play at the NFL level. Theres no guarantee Matt Ryan will ever be a great NFL quarterback. But I know he is definitely on the fast track to becomming great. I only hope that he will continue to get better and the Falcons continue to surround Matt Ryan with much talent. The Mike Vick era is officially over and we have now begun the Matt Ryan era.
