Shockley: Falcons get it right
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
No doubt that the Falcons made some good decisions with their cuts. No real surprises. Shockley deserves to be No. 3. Chances are that he won’t play, but with all the injuries these days (ask the Braves), it’s good to have him there if the Falcons need him. I’m hoping last season’s injury is behind him and that that won’t be a concern.
Of course, I feel bad for Harrington, but I think this makes the most since for the Falcons. Sure, he wasn’t helped by the offensive line’s inability to block ANYONE last season, but he made bad decisions at critical times. That was the beginning of his downfall and he just didn’t make his mark in the preseason.
I hate that Thomas Brown is out of for the season. I think he could have been a difference-maker. He had a great preseason and looked primed to make his mark. His quickness could have been a real asset to setting up good field position on kick returns, something this team is going to need with a rookie at starting quarterback.
It’s exciting that the team is set and hopefully ready to start strong next Sunday against the Lions.
Go Falcons!

DEAR SANTA:
I have been a good boy this year and I only have one request on my shopping list. Can I please make the playoffs? It’s been so long. Can you please send a hero?
FROM THE DESK OF SANTA:
Dear Unbiased, you had been granted the greatest athlete that God has ever created but you rejected my gift. Eventhough he went to Lambough Field and beat the legendary Brett Favre in his back yard at a time when he had NEVER lost in the playoffs at Lambough Field and this was a quarterback in his first full season as a starter and finished in the top 5-finalist for the LEAGE MVP.
He later went on to lead this team to the Championship game, with an undersized (180) running back, who previously never managed to rush for more than 700 yards in a season, yet had 3-consecutive 1,000 seasons. Not only did he have an undersized running back, he also had no wide receivers, no offensive line and an overrated defense.
Because your city has rejected my gift, you will be forever jinxed and have returned to mediocre results and will continue to do so. No matter how many “great white hopes” or “face of the franchises” that you come up with, you will not break the curse.

unbiased blogger put the crack pipe down. Vick never was and never will be a QB that a team can depend on to take them to the super bowl. He will either get hurt from running so much or he will land in jail for any number of things that his thug past just will not let him escape. He had the world by the tail and he blew in moreso than any athlete in the history of sports. He’s where he should be so that he can think about his life and he can hopefully become a decent citizen of this country. He should look to Barack Obama for inspiration and see that a black man can attain incredible heights with his life AND maintain those heights without resorting to the most basic of personal urges that can destroy anyone’s life. My prayers are with him.

You know what the perfect computer virus would do for me? It’d make a computer EXPLODE if anyone even typed the name of the former Falcons QB. And it would leave radioactive fallout.
Nobody put him in jail because they didn’t want him to play QB.

Atlanta never had an opportunity to reject the previous quarterback. He committed crimes and the criminal justice system took him away. What happened is his responsibility and no one else’s.

Well, “Mighty Professor”! Guess the Dome will never rock again because we won’t allow convicted felons (and on top of that) disgusting “dogkillers, liars, fools, etc….back into our home! However,..the type of rockin your probably talkin about was the one when I “rocked” out of my chair, held my hands up, and just handed over my wallet!

Wow Michael— let he who has no sins cast that stone.
However, I pray that should your lies be uncovered that you will remember your post and how God’s mercy and grace covered you and me alike.
Furthermore, I am so glad that God ,not you, has the last word on Michael Vick.
The kind of rocking that I was referring to was the kind were people were enjoying the game and the dome (as evidenced by a full dome for a whole game).

Yes BirdBabe keeping Shockley was the right choice for the Falcon’s administration. He was capable of sustaining down field drives which lead to points being scored. A feat none of their other QB’s have been able to do with any regularity. He has shown he has fully rehabilitated from his injury and is ready to play. Maybe one day he will after the other 2 QB’s are either injured or fail to produce wins. It would be nice to see the Falcon’s staff give him the chance to show why he has a SEC championship ring…if not they should trade him to a team which will.

okay, smart ones! Vick is gone for good. Get over it and move with your lives. Vick is enjoying ihs cell, and there is one waiting on him for those state charges. which are different charges than those federal charges. So the only ball vick is playing with is not football if know what I mean. Get over him. Enjoy the new era in falcons football.

Shockley was kept for one reason. To stop the race card from being pulled out. Shockley did that against the scrubs thursday night. He had 15.3 QB rating against the Colts scrubs. It ‘s all about race. If there are any smart people out there, they will realize this. At least we can see all the games on TV this year. Shockley will help sellout games. Smart move by the front office. It stops the card and sells tickets

Shockley was the best choice to keep, he has more upside potential than Harrington. I liked Joey but he doesn’t have the speed, size, or the cannon arm that Shockley displays. All Shockley needs to improve are his game management skills. All that will take is practice and time because he definitely has the intelligence to get it done. If he stays healthy I believe he will have a great career in the NFL.
As for the rest of the cuts I don’t see where they could’ve done anything different. I do hope they will find some more quality help for the OF and DEF lines, they’re still really thin in those two areas.

I thought you were the bird babe not the dog babe. Too many af you UGA koolaid drinking loons have over inflated beliefs in these former Georgia players. Shockley is a waste of a roster spot. And Snelling is a better back than Brown and can also can play FB as well. The only thing Brown had over Snelling was kick returns.
Cut the ties to these locals and get guys that can compete at this level and win. If that happens to be a local kid then great. Go Falcons

Professor,
It’s always so easy to use the cast the first stone line. It isn’t nearly so tiring to use that as it was for our friend Unbiased Blogger to use the all I want for Christmas is my brain back routine.
As a black man even I understand that over 75% of the sacks that MV7 took were because of his indecisiveness. He likely was one of the greatest athlete’s of our generation. He was also lazy when it came to film study and relied almost completely on his talent instead of talent and study. He could have been great… Instead he rots his career away in prison.
Oh, I forgive the guy. I am actually glad that he is gone. Vick is not even a McNabb.
The dome was just as packed in 98 before Vick’s arrival even if the tailgating didn’t resemble something from a college campus like it has the last few years with Vick. I care more about my football than a parking lot party.

From a Jacket fan, I like Shockley too. The Falcons were right to keep him rather than Harrington, because Shockley’s upside is so much more. If he can learn to stop over throwing his receivers, I think he could be the number back for Atlanta, for a decade. Should Ryan go down, I would not have a problem with Shockley coming in and running the team.
NOTE: I too believe that ex-cons should have a right to have a new start, but in the NFL, they don’t see him as QB any more. He’ll have to take his physical running talents and use them in a different way. Let’s not forget that the CFL will be interested in him. I think he’ll land somewhere, playing.

The Falcons’ heart and class quotient just went down a few notches with Harrington’s release. I just wish a couple folks would step up and show some appreciation for the weekly drubbing he took on behalf of the team last year. And then he took a pay cut because he was committed to the rebuilding of the franchise. Oh well…if you don’t appreciate something good when you got it then you don’t deserve it. Good luck.

I wish Vick success in his future endeavours. Everyone deserves a second chance to put their lives in order. That being said, I also believe that the NFL should ban ANYONE, ANY TALENT, ANY COLOR, who enters prison on criminal FELONY charges that are committed while that person is a member of the National Football League. The NFL is for the elite. Second chances mean you are not elite. Second chances begin with church and humble pie.

It’s funny how NFL felons will play football again. Yet, if one of us is felon. We would be lucky to get a job at walmart. Vick should be ban for life. Just b/c he is a felon. Clearly Shockley was kept to appease the black fan base. Harrington was a much more accomplished QB. Now the drumbeat will begin for “DJ” to start the minute Ryan throws an interception. Nothing changes in Atlanta…its always about race….I know…I grew up here. Joey, good luck in Baltimore. Maybe you will finally play on a good team. Thanks for being a class act while your were here…unlike some of our other “saviour” QBs over the past few years.

You guys are sick. You are sick with wanting to relive the past. You are blind to the truth. You can only see color. You invoke God’s name to justify your position. You call out…other people as hypocrites in God’s name. Get a clue: This is football. Not a criminal support system. Not a blog to espouse the non-virtues of people who are racist. Get a life. You are paltry, pathetic excuses for bloggers. Want to talk football? ok. Want to talk that convicted felon BS? Ha! You are sick. He is GONE. And will stay GONE. So go away, or embrace the team of today…Your new Atlanta Falcons, with MattyIce as your starter. Yes, someone who can read a defense, throw to a spot, audible, who has a brain!
Get over yourself, get over the loss of *ick, get over your racism, or flat out go away! We don’t want you here. We don’t want to hear your rants. Barack Obama is making history. Look for yourself…a black man rising to the pinnacle in America and being embraced by people of all color. Take solace and wisdom from that and see that the world is changing right before your very eyes! And don’t ever come on this blog and utter the *ick name again. He is not worthy. He did what he did. Are you stupid, a thug, a moron? Wake up! Please say goodbye.

Keep It Real, my previous post includes you. You must have squat for yourself, made nothing of yourself OR you just bathe in the light of ignorance every day as part of the problem instead of part of the solution. You must hate, from your heart, from your head, from your keyboard.
To hear your racist ranting on this blog with your “kracka and cone” talk reveals what you are to the world. For all your education and street smarts, you persist in flailing the blogoshpere with your race baiting and innuendo. You must hate yourself and who your are, what you have become.
But you must think you are doing your brothers a favor with your attitude, and racitude, thinking the black of your skin somehow gives you the right. Then the ganging up on other bloggers by piggybacking on someone elses post to try to spew your vial message. But the only thing you succeed in doing is alienating other bloggers. People who might want to be part of the solution see your childish behavior for what it is.
You try to fester the problem, making it worse, helping it along, because you see the world only as black and white, that somehow you personally have been wronged, so you spew your rancid ignorace. Who among us hasn’t experienced the sharp tooth of an individual transgression by someone against us?
But are all the travesties of the world heaped upon the black man your burden to bear? And yours to defend? What right have you earned to speak? What trail have you blazed? Because your black? Haha! That doesn’t even get you a cup of coffee these days. Better find another high horse to ride, because you are so insignificant, so small and miniscule, a voice like yours will never be heard. Your hate will boil and fester in your gut for years to come. Better pray to our Lord God to remove it and make you a better person in the process. Good Luck!

Tim: Your post was barely comprehensible…geez, doesn’t anyone read their comments before posting anymore? Harrington was picked up by another team within hours of being released by the Falcons. How quickly do you think another team would have picked up “DJ”? Harrington has actually won some NFL games at QB while playing on some very poor teams. His 2004 stats, while playing for a terrible Detroit team, are comparable to Mike Vick’s and that was Vick’s best year. How many games has “DJ” won in the NFL? Don’t bother answering….its a rhetorical question. Clearly, DJ was kept to appease the black fan base. Calling me a “racist” doesn’t change that fact.
By Theone

crabapplejoe, your right on point. DJ was kept to keep the Race card from appearing. Joey would have been the best pick. I bet you ask some these racist blacks and they want a falcons team with no white players. Just like the Hawks. It’s the reality we are faced with. For white player to start they have to be great. I believe in fairness. When have to compete for QB you find who is the better QB. Vick never competed ,was always appointed the starter. I wish these idiots would wake up and realize this is just a game.

shockey was kept because you don’t spend a million dollars on a year contract for your 3rd string qb. It has nothing to do with UGA or SEC or any belief that he will be the starter. He would have been playing with the starters or they wouldn’t have drafted Ryan.
By Big B 99
September 3, 2008 4:13 PM | Link to this
If the Falcons ever want to become a Real Team, they need to stop trying to be Uga South, and the fans need to realize that not all great College players are good pros. Therefore, by composing your team of all Uga players, doesn’t mean that the Falcons will be good, no matter how good those players were in College.
They should have kept Joey, b/c as a Veteran, he offers more to help Matt learn the ropes of the NFL. Help Matt not to make some of the same mistakes that he did when he was young. Joey is a bust as a #3 Pick, but he is a decent Back-up QB.
What pick was Matt? Se any eerie similarities? I think D.J. is a good kid, and a good athlete, but he is not an NFL QB, and never will be. He’s undersized, w/o the Rocket arm or insane 4.4 speed to overcome it. He could be successful in Arena or Canada.

Yes the Falcons got it right. The decision to keep Shockley was the right one. The Falcon will open up with a streak of defeats, and as typical the new coach will try anthing to get a win. This will be the year that Shockley seizes upon the opportunity and moves the team down field with a mixture of pass and run. DJ has a great arm and when give the opportunity to be the teams starting quarterback, will produce as he did with UGA. I know the Kid has a great head on him and just need some continous playing time to let the FALCONS know that they have a DIAMOND in the rough. Give the money to your number one draft choice but please give the ball to the QB(Shockley) that can deliver WINS.

Why do these black Falcon fans blame Vick’s downfall on anyone else but Vick? Because that’s the way black people deal with failure. They blame everyone else but themselves. Until black America starts accepting responsibility for it’s own failures, there is no where for them to go but down. Sad but true.
By JD

Not all fans of color blame Michael Vick’s troubles on everyone else. When the whole thing came down, I was steadily shaking my head and muttering stupid each and every time something else came out about him. Don’t put all blacks in the same boat because not everyone feels the same way. While I enjoyed watching Michael Vick play football and cheered for him, I’m a Falcon’s fan and wanted to see the TEAM do well each season.
It’s amazing to me how much vitriol is spewed when his name is mentioned. There’s no denying the guy had stellar talent. Could he have gotten more out of it, sure. He had probably his most productive year in 2003, when the Falcons went to the playoffs and defeated a Green Bay Packers team in Green Bay, on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field. Not too many quarterbacks (Eli Manning withstanding) can boast that. I think that when Arthur Blank (and this in no way is to take a shot at him) changed coaches from Dan Reeves to Jim Mora, that’s when the decline truly began.
That’s when the cornrows came out (and, it’s totally within his right to want to wear cornrows - Donovan McNabb did it) and all the other stuff followed. He got too buddy-buddy with the head coach, much so to the point where he was coddled instead of made to work hard like everyone else. Did he devote enough time to the game thru study and such? Maybe, maybe not. Only those on the team at the time can tell you that. Was he doing enough to help the team win? He did what he could given the circumstances (argue the O-line, poor defense, bad offensive system all you want). On the football field, he was a product of what he was given to work with. What you see is what you got.
As far as the whole DJ Shockley vs. Joey Harrington debate, I think the Falcons made the right call. Regardless of whether either qb was cut, rumor had it on Wednesday before the last preseason game that if if Shockley was cut or placed on the practice squad, he would have been immediately scooped up by some team looking for a young qb with upside (Chris Mortensen reported that on the radio). I am a fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, but I also felt that DJ was in jeopardy due to his poor showings in the first two preseason games. Granted, in the first game he led the team on a game ending drive that resulted in an interception, but he’ll get better at those situations with a little playing time (no, he shouldn’t be starting. He needs to be the third string qb and learn; nothing wrong w/ that. It also helps if a receiver in the end zone will catch a catchable ball when it’s laid right in his wickets). It’s difficult to see any member of the team that you’ve shown a vested interest in lose their job due to the situation, but it happens. Whether you like it or not, you’ve got to move forward and prepare for the next game w/ the players you have.
There are many ways to spin the current state of our team, but this black man is gonna support them regardless of who’s on the team and what their skin color is.

There’s no way Joey Harrington was treared fairly. He was yanked around and treated terribly by that Gypsy that passed through a year ago and set up camp. I hope he can catch on with a team that has some talent and will give him a legiimate opportunity. He didn’t have that here. He was humiliated, lied to and treated like dirt. Joey has some talent and I hope he has an opportunity to show it. He’s a class guy and deserved much better than he got here!

The rise, fall and imprisonment of Michael vick was in the making from day one. He signed his contract and immediately went searching for a property where he could engage in illegal dogfighting and gambling on those fights. He surrounded himself with felons and he, himself, soon became one. The fallout from the killing of the dogs in such hideous ways, in which he participated, is a mark that’s going to keep him out of football forever. He blew every good thing he had and he had a lot! Many of the dogs are thriving and that’s more than Vick will ever do again. As an aside, Gerald Poindexter had a chance to prosecute the case on the state level but he dragged his feet because he didn’t want to prosecute a brother. The penalties would have been much less but he was determined there would be no trial. The investigator, upon receiving that news went to the feds and they immediately took control. Vick still faces state trial and Commissioner Goodell may give him a lengthy suspension after he’s out of prison. His best bet might be to try Canada,. It’s a living and it’s a pretty good brand of football.

You’re right Algonquin. And add that Vick had the most a$$ backwards legal advice I ever seen. He should have fessed up and taken the 4 game suspension. He didn’t realize that the Feds would get involved and I bet you anything, the Feds produced a picture of him at the fights and forced him to a plea. That’s why the good book says that “the truth shall set you free”

It is amazing. There are still people on here taking about Michael Vicks Personal Problems. You people make me sick. Mike Vick made a mistake when he first got into the league. He made the mistake and he is paying for it. Everyone in this world has done something wrong and most have done something that could get them locked up they just haven’t been caught even some these A##Holes who keeps judging Vick.
When Michael Vick was putting many in Blanks and the falcons pocket Mr. Blanks loved him the fans loved him and some of that judge him now loved him. Some of you need to do your homework. Dog fighting been in the south forever and you know it and when most people got arrest for it none served jailed time for it until this young Black Millionaire. He wasn’t a King Pin of Dog Fighting everyone knows that.
And I was really trying not to talk about people who judged him but, you people need a life. I wonder how many of you or Child molesters, Cocaine and Weed heads or dealers, Wife Beaters, Crooks and even murders and liars I’m sure you A#^Holes fall in there somewhere.
And if I was Vick I wouldn’t want to make that now shady organization any more money if he is back next year and If DJ Shockley the best Quarterback on the team is not starting they will lose. Ryan isn’t that good at all. Blanks just lost 72 million more dollars and that’s good for him.
Good luck Vick. Hope to see you back.

Harrington has taken over a 1000 snaps as a starter and one what?? DJ has taken how many snaps as a starter??—-thought so
How can any intelligent person or even “racist” not acknowledge that he needs playing time (with starters) to fairly evaluate him??

Folks, Mike Vick will be just fine and he is paying for the wrong he did ! Let it rest.
Mike is not in uniform and it do hope and pray, that some team will give him a second chance.
You guys need to stop displaying all your racist remarks. I would not want any kids to read some of this trash you folks write. The AJC need to band this Comment.
I know the South still racsist and it shows, from all the TRASH YOUR FOLKS. Next the N word and C word will be in some of the comments made.Lets deal with what the Falcons have now and see how our season will end.
GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
