Harrington or Shockley?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m a Joey Harrington fan, but I think D.J. Shockley should be a part of the Falcons. Both aren’t likely to have a spot on the roster because it looks like Redman will be No. 2 on the depth chart. Harrington didn’t help his cause last season and Shockley’s injury hurt his chances. It will be a tough decision.
I’d say go with Shockley because Harrington had his chance and the team lost its confidence in him. Hard to repair that. Shockley helped himself Thursday night, but not sure how much weight that will carry.
The Falcons need to keep Brian Finneran. He deserves another chance to prove he can make a difference. He’s the tall and reliable third-down receiver the rookie quarterback needs.
Jason Snelling has earned a roster spot in the preseason. The Falcons need him in goal-line and short yardage situations. Keep Thomas Brown. Let him return kickoffs and punts. He could be a difference-maker.
The final preseason game wasn’t pretty, but it looks like the Falcons feel like Ryan is ready. We’ll see Sept. 7.
Let’s go Falcons!

No brainer. Keep Shockley. Joey Harrington cannot do anything that Ryan, Redman, and Shockley can do better. And do you really want a failed #3 pick hanging around to mentor your new QB?

I hope the Falcons will keep Joey. Not once in his career has he gotten a fair and equitable chance to prove himself. Shockley played well tonight but, in the long run, Harrington is the better guy to have backing up.

Keep Harrington. - is the AJC really running “another” QB Poll trying to pump up the scrub, DJ Shockley? What is this, a high-school popularity contest? Joey Harrington certainly does NOT need to prove anything at this point - he played pretty well last year EVEN behind that horrible O-line for Bobby the jerk, and Bobby’s brother, and Bobby’s pal who was coaching that O-line.
Week after Week the AJC runs another QB Poll - but hey we’re not trying to influence the team or anything - right? No way :) - remember last year AJC writers bad mouthed Harrington before he took a single snap.
DJ Shockley has some talent, BUT is a project and the Falcons already have a $72 million project to deal with - you keep your 7-year veteran NFL starter. Joey Harrington should stay a Falcon this year - despite the stupidity of UGA fans and the efforts of AJC to try & influence things.

$1 million for a third QB?

DJ Shockley should be the #3. That’s it.
First of all, Shockley had the least amount of snaps with the first team, yet still drove the team for a TD. What I’ve seen was QB that was getting progressively better as the game went on. That’s what you want to see.
Oh, and did you see those times when the Ravens blitzed and the defender went untouched to the QB? With Shockley, he had the athletic abilty to extend the play and make a completion. With Harrington, sack. That elusiveness isn’t quite Vick-like, but I also saw the discipline of not just taking off when the pocket was still intact, either. Shockley planted his feet and made plays downfield.
See, the ability to extend a play is so critical because a secondary can’t cover receivers for too long. The magic number is 7 seconds. Most good coverages will start to break down after 7 seconds. Shockley was able to extend it out that long and longer.

Maybe I wasnt looking at the same game as some of you.Joey looked nervous, he looked like a dog crapping barbwire. He’s slow, cant get out the way and has a weak arm. Anytime he’s in the game the opposing team will put eight in the box and blitz him. He’s been in the league for seven years how many chances does he need.
On the other DJ improved as the game went on. I would’ve liked to have seen DJ with Turner or Norwood in the backfield with him atleast once or twice

I would feel better with DJ backing up Ryan than Harrington. Harrington has shown us what he can do time and time again…LOSE. He’s a nice enough guy, just prone to lose, everywhere he’s been.
DJ has tremendous upside potential. With maturity and getting that strong arm under better control, he will step in and help the Falcons win. Like Thomas Brown, DJ will also bring in a lot of local fans who otherwise wouldn’t come to a Falcons game.

Bye Bye Joey Bye Bye.
DJ all the way.
Shockley out performed the other QB’s that got to play for the falcons last night.
Maybe DJ should be the #2 QB instead of Redman.
If the falcon’s #1 QB continues to be unable to put together successful drives it might be in the organizations best interest to secure a strong back-up punter.

The NFl is as cut throat as it gets, but all things being equal, neither Harrington or Shockley will see the field. It would be wise for the Falcons from a PR standpoint to keep Shockley, the identity of the Falcons = Michael Vick is over, and alot of the fans went with him. It would not hurt to have a little more fans that normally got to games on Saturday, to also show up on Sunday. Not to forget, Shock is the better quarterback.

RealPro seems to believe Harrington has proved himself. He states Harrington played well considering the horrible offensive line from last year. UMMMMMMMMMMMM was that the same offensive line Micheal Vick rushed for 1000 yards and ran for his life every Sunday afternoon. The same line that afforded him the same quality of protection and we moaned because he wasn’t a pocket passer and didn’t have a high qb rating. Rating, smating, Harrington is with his 3rd team after being a #1 pick. Shockely was a 6th round pick and is competiton with this guy. Give me a break.

After the Baltimore game, if there is ANYONE that thinks Joey Harrington is half the QB that Shockley is, please get medication quickly!
Harrington is slow, can’t get the ball downfield and hits the field before the receiver more times than not. Last night, Harrington had 2 x sacks, and 2 x interceptions (one negated because of a penalty). Joey has had 6 years to prove himself and he has failed miserable every time. Shock is quicker, faster, MUCH better arm and performs way above Joey when playing with competent receivers and line. Harrington fans are either blind, stupid or just hate the fact that Shock played for UGA. Maybe all three!
After watching the game last night, the decision on who to cut is idiot proof, even for Falcon fans.

Give it up, guys. D.J. will be retained and wear a Falcon uniform well into his 40’s simply because Blank will utilize him to solidify the fan base that feels disenfranchised since MV7 went to prison.
Personally, I like D.J. and understand Blank’s situation; however, he probably wouldn’t be the starting quarterback for the Dawgs today.

All of you Shockley Haters are just G.T. Fans!!!!! Shockley scored ALL of the points last night, with the 2nd string offense!!!
Mike Smith, You lied, you said every QB would get a chance to play with the 1st string. Once Shockley came into the game, so did the 2nd string offensive line, Why would you sell out your fans ?? I can not trust you anymore!!!
Duke Stank, You are right, We need another punter, just in case our starting punter gets hurt from all of the time he will spend on the field with that bust of a QB that is named as the starter!!!
Bye bye harrington, we will not miss you!!!!
Oh and by the way, Shockley was the QB who lead our team to victory last night, Imagine what he could do if he was with the first string!!!!!!
Mr. Blank, as soon as the AJC announces that Shockley is the starter, your season tickets will FLY out of the ticket booths in a matter of MINUTES!!!!!!

Joey Harrington cannot get out of his own —— way! Only a timely penalty on one of his ———- brain-dead interceptions allowed the Falcons to escape with a win. Harrington is a nice guy. The waste is also a loser, loser, LOSER! Another —————- loser on a team of losers IS NOT what this franchise needs now or forevermore! Was I the only one that observed that rhe slow motion man resembled a pregnant elephant knee-deep in molasses whenever there was ANY KIND of —— pass rush? Ditch this pathetic untalented bum! Got sick of looking at him last season. Begin the new campaign anew. Without JH! Squa Tront!

I could care less about college football or where our players played. That being said, why the HELL is this even a question about Shockly or Harrington. Harrington looked exactly like he’s looked the past 6 years…INEPT! Personally, I would prefer Shockley over Redman. He’s more spectacular, moves well and has a better arm than either Redman or Harrington. Harrington is the 4th QB by a MILE. Get your personal feelings off the board and look at reality. Even with the scrubs, Shockley looked like he was on the verge. Dropped passes and an awful scrub line made his stats look so bad. You saw what happened when Harrington was dealt the same hand. The team moved BACKWARDS whe Joey had the reins. Joey threw as many interceptions in one game that Shock threw the entire preseason. Once Shock became confident, he heated up dramatically. When Joey came in, I just rolled my eyes “Here we go again. I just hope our D can hang on.”

Let me start by saying I’m a GA. TECH YELLOW JACKET FAN. Absolutely no love lost on the dawgs, none at all. Frankly, F-T-D.
That said, how anybody watching last nights Bird’s game can even state a case for Harrington over D.J. with a straight face is either truly stupid, as blind as Stevie Wonder or a Saints / Bucs / Panthers fan. Joey is so afraid of getting creamed again that he can’t even carry out a decent fake. He’s in such a hurry to get rid of the ball that he throws it at the feet of and behind the receiver before he starts his break.
On the other hand, D.J. threw crisp, sharp passes on the timing routes. When he had to extend the play to allow his guys to find the open spaces, he did, and again delivered crisp, accurate passes. Not only would I keep D.J., I would make him the No. 2 behind Ryan.
Maybe we can find a team willing to part with a 6th round pick in the 2009 draft to trade Joey to. But I doubt it.

The third string qb won’t see the field??? What NFL have you been watching? DJ is clearly the better QB right now, AND has the best upside potential. Actually he is better than Ryan. Ryan will get hurt or throw too many interceptions. Redman will get a chance and FAIL. Third string WILL play this season. If they let DJ go they will regret it and I will be here to say I TOLD YOU SO!!!!

Why was last nights game the only one that we want to compare?? Let’s compare game #1 and game #2…BIAS bull crap. Niether one is a starter, so who cares. I personally would keep the one with experience. After watching the bills/lions game last night, I would be concerned about the QB safety. Lions D is extremely fast this year and they are hitting very hard. They are the only team to go 4-0 in preseason (and don’t say well it’s only preseason, because isn’t that what the QB comparison is based on). They are also the only D to not allow a touchdown during preseason. 2 safeties last night and also 12 sacks in preseason. The concern of a rookie QB getting hurt should be real. I would want an experienced 2 and 3 QB just in case.

Apples to Apples, what good is experience if the guy has sucked during his whole experience? You are putting WAY too much stock in this experience thing. How about a GOOD quarterback? That ring a bell. Joey has 6 yrs. of INEPTNESS! I’ll take a good QB with limited experience over a 6 year sack of potatoes every time. Get it through your head….Harrington’s a BUM, no matter how much experience he has!

cudos to TJ and bring the pain for their vision and knowing before the season is through …. D.J. will be at the helm of the Falcon’s offense for the various reasons they stated in their posts.
1 QB will be unable to drive down the field . It will be 1 or 2 first downs and punt.in comes Redman and he tries but can’t produce the points and fails.
and our homegrown SEC QB Shockley will get to take over and ticket sales will skyrocket and the dome will sell out and we will get to watch our home games from the comfort of our lazyboy recliners.

Apples To Apples: Last night was the first time somebody else played with the same players DJ has been playing with and we saw what Joey didnt do. Ryan was given the starting job based on what he did against TENN an 9-7 team at best.
The headline reads “Ryan gets Falcons started in win” BS, it should’ve read “Schockley overcomes adversity and wins”. Stop trying to push Ryan in our face he will struggle bad this year. Redman is our best bet.

I personally think Joey Harrington goes and Dj stay because Joey had his chance last year he got sacked last night and really didn’t do to much to really excite me not even ryan. Most people don’t like DJ because of his style of play but I think he should be #2 and Redman #3 they really haven’t gave this man a lick of a chance. Take u back to 3weeks ago when coach Smith said that all three quarterbacks would get a start. Did DJ start last night no it went Redman Harrington Ryan and Ryan so they throw Dj in there in the middle of the second and he really didn’t get to play with the first squad which I think it’s really not fair but hey to each it’s own I think Harrington had a chance to showcase his talent last year and his year with Miami and with Detroit and drop the ball with all three teams so if u want to really talk on who the falcons should keep if u keep Harrington then I know the falcons are not about change and about a loads and loads of crap………..lol I’ll holla.

Some of you “fans” have no knowledge of what’s going on at all. The writers want DJ here just because he’s a state product, not that he’s any good. Anyway, they already have their young QB in Ryan. You don’t want to have 2 young QBs on your roster. Ask the Lions about what happened in the early ’90s. Maybe they will trade DJ or Joey to a team that still need a serviceable QB (audition for Baltimore)? I was hoping they would play Harrington more so they could get more for him( they won’t get much for Shockley right now, which is a shame).

Darryn,
You are an IDIOT!!!! Shockley is clearly the best QB on the team!!!
You know what Payton Manning and D.J. Shockley have in common??? AN SEC CHAMPIONSHIP RING!!!!
Who cares what the writter’s want, its about what the FANS want!!! Shockley became a HERO last night, in the eyes of all of the FALCON’s fans!!! (except for those nerdy tech fans)!!!
Harrington’s experience is crappy, and that is being nice about it!!! Redman, well, he is better at holding a clip board…
I think they need to go ahead, and trade Ryan, start Shockley, so that the fans can get united and excited about this team… Thats all the falcons need right now, for us FANS to unite and support them completely!!!

Ok, fools!!!! DJ SHOCKLEY WILL ONLY BE THE 3RD STRINGER AT BEST WITH THE FALCONS.
How many TD’s does he have? 1. How many INT’s does he have. 2.
He was playing behind mostly Ravens 2nd unit anyways. His first 3 series were 3 and outs. pathetic ones at that. No gainers.
I’ll give it to him, he made the team over Harrington, but in no way does he beat Ryan. At all. No way, ain’t gonna happen in a million years. So go ahead and forget it.
You have got to be kidding me!!! Shockley has 1, I mean 1 good series and all of a sudden he is a HERO???? You HOMERS are ridiculous to think that he better than Ryan.

you are a bigger IDIOT than Darryn,.. Take a look at this piece I copied from an article published in the AJC just two days ago about the wonderful Shockley…
these are coach mike smith’s exact words..
*”He’s going to have to go out and run the offense and move the chains,” Smith said. “I think he’s going to get an opportunity to do it with our first offensive group and I think and hope it’s going to be against Baltimore’s first.
“We want to see production and efficiency with our offense when he’s out there, like all our quarterbacks.”
It’s amazing how really popular you can get after a few first downs. Throw in a touchdown or two, and you’re everybody’s homecoming king.”*

Falcon610 Exactly what has Ryan done to impress you? look at his stats compared to Redman. Ryan 34/59 57.6% Redman 15/21 71.4%. I think coach Smith has been to pushing Ryan in our face so we have to beleive he’s the best. Ryan is in the game, 1st and goal from the oneyd line and you pass. Redmans in the game you have 2nd and goal from the 9yd line and you run, 3rd and goal from 8yd line and you run. Smith didnt want redman stats to look better than Ryans.

Joey should stay. Shockley is not a very good passing QB, and he can’t run that well either. I say let someone some other team waste there time with him. Lloydd your an idiot! Just like The great and wonderful Vick (Aka Jail boy). He was a awful QB, but he could run. The difference is Ryan has already mastered the offense, something Jail boy could never figure out. Ryan is the next great QB in the NFL. Ryan as been very impressive. Point am trying make is Ryan is being paid a lot of money and he as proved that is worth that much. Falcons will win the super bowl in 3 years with Ryan.

Here is what impresses me about Ryan…
He spreads the ball around and HAS THE BALLS TO STEP UP IN THE POCKET INSTEAD OF RUN AWAY LIKE A DAWG WITH A BAD CASE OF FLEAS and try to force a play, thus he has 2 interceptions.
After every series he is talking to the O-line, Coaches, WR’s, RB’s. Trying to get everyone on the same page. Something you didn’t see Shockley doing, or any of the other QB’s.
Ryan isn’t afraid to admit he made a mistake, and he is humble enough when does something good to keep himself in check.
The TEAM as a whole respects Ryan as their LEADER because of his huddle presence. Opposed to Shockley where they just like him because he’s popular and cool to talk to.
TJ, your post is completely hypocritical to your “enough said”. Shockley moved the chains good on one drive and just OK on another. The first 3 drives were 3 and outs and no gain plays. 3 out of the first 5 were three and outs. Opposed to Ryan who had one 3 and out on his first ever drive, then scored a TD, another reason why I like Ryan and he has impressed me. Also, Smitty was addressing you idiot homers about the homecoming king idea because he’s right. If he scores all of a sudden you homers are acting like he’s the second coming of god just as I am reading right now on this blog.
lloydd, those stats you gave against Ryan and Redman are incomparable because Ryan threw 2.8 times as many passes as Redman. Fool. Did you stop to think that maybe coach Smith was more confident in Ryan’s touch in the endzone for a score, was better than his confidence in Redman’s? Of course not, you are looking for conspiracy in everything rather than admitting that Ryan can throw and Smitty called the play and he was right… Ryan proved he can pass to the endzone… DUH.

DJ IS A MODEL CITIZEN AND TEAM PLAYER AND YOU ARE SAYING THE SAME THING ABOUT HIM AS YOU DID WITH VICK. Has Ryan completed a down and out pass yet against Tenn he dink and dunk (ala Joey)his way to a 15/21 6.8yd pp. Wow lets put eight in the box and shut this down.

You are nothing more than a racist, that I am glad is not a the dome anymore. DJ’s attitude is nothing like Vick’s I never said that. He playing style, however, is just like Vick’s, and we have been there, done that, never got a superbowl. No where near good enough to get us past 1st round playoffs.
As I said, I think DJ wins the spot… for number 3, not anywhere should he be considered for number 1 at this point. He is struggling to make number 3. Why would you put him at number 1? Of course based on what you keep saying, because he is black. It seems to me that is the only way you’ll appreciate Atlanta Falcons football, to see that we only have a black quarterback to fill out your personal status quo.
We don’t need bigot’s like on our side. You are laughable excuse of a football fan, and are narrow-minded who needs to stay at home.

FALCONS610,
are you blind?? You must be, Ryan has punted the ball away how many consecutive drives now ?? I think the number is somewhere around 10!!! This offense under his leadership is going to stall!!
I will say this, Matt will lead the league in INT’s thrown, and our punter will have the MOST punts in the NFL!!!
No doubt VICKIE sucks, he was an ACC QB in college, just like the retarded RYAN..
IF you want a WINNER, go with the SEC, much stronger competition, and more character as well!!!
While Shockley was in the game, the offense was getting stronger and stronger, keep him in, and you will see that continue through out the season!!!
While Ryan was in the game, the offense does nothing but stall… he moved the chains maybe three times last night…

TJ,
Ryan has punted the ball away a grand total of let’s see 2 times in a row, last night. If you will recall, he left in the 3rd quarter last game, game 3, with a TD pass to Harry Douglas. Also, just because your punter comes out a lot doesn’t mean a your quarterback sucks. It means the defense on the other team is good. From what I saw last night, the game was a defensive battle. Defense wins ball games more times than offense.
If you don’t know that simple basic philosophy of football, then you must not watch much of it. Not only that but you over exaggerate your stats, 10 in a row, just like you over exaggerate Shockley’s ability to be a starter… OUCH! I have a box of tissues for you though.

FACONS610,
You are still an IDIOT… That drive that you are talking about, didnt Turner break one for like 60 yards or so ?? woop te do, Ryan completed a 1 yard touch down pass, oh my he is so wonderful.. I have only seen one deep pass completed by this great bust, and that was the spectacular TD pass that he tossed to Roddy White… Of course it should have been incomplete, but Roddy did make the catch… Look at all of Shockley’s passes this pre-season, and you see spot on accuracy that none of the other QB displayed… Oh dont you dare bring up completion percentages… Shockley was throwing to the 4th stringers who cant catch a cold, and every pass was through the hands… Like the old great Madden says, if it touches the hands, you are supposed to catch it..
Yes defense wins games, but if your offense can not contribute, who cares about the defense right ???

FALCONS610 I agree with your opinion on Ryan being the starter. But I think DJ has the potential to be a great quarterback in the NFL. I am not saying he is going to start just because he had a decent game last night. What I am saying is if something were to happen to Ryan, a good leader that I also see potential in, DJ would be able to fill in that role as a temporary starter, at least.
I disagree with your opinion on DJ having the same playing style as Mike Vick. Vick would take off every time he saw a hole. He had a strong arm but he lacked the accuracy needed to be a consistent passer in the NFL. DJ has the ability to run. He also has a strong arm. Those are the only similarities I see. DJ doesn’t run every time he sees a little room. Yes, he sometimes runs out of the pocket but he will plant his feet and deliver a catchable pass. He is a smart and disciplined player that will improve as time goes on. He doesn’t have the best accuracy but it is much better than that of Vick’s. I just hope the guy can stay healthy, along with the rest of the team.

Number one, you are wrong, again, it was Norwood who ran the ball.
Two, at least Ryan passed a TD instead of that ugly duck DJ threw under pressure in game one in the redzone. Don’t even say third unit receivers because Harry Douglas is a rookie just as Ryan who caught the ball.
Three, stop with the whole “Nobody else could catch it if it weren’t for Roddy” excuse, because yep your right, if it touches your hands, you are supposed to catch it, just like Roddy did. Moron.
So let’s see from your last post, You were wrong on another stat, you used a quote that actually helped my argument out and hurt yours, and you are completely wrong on your last question because hasn’t Ryan contributed the most TD’s and pass yards of any QB on the roster as of now? Thought so. While your boy is tied with the most INT’s on the roster with Redman. Next?

I am not sure about this but I think harrington has thrown the most picks. Why are you so against DJ? Ryan has already been declared the starter. We just want DJ to make the team. Then we can worry about the QB competition. And that first game when Shockley threw the interception was the FIRST GAME OF THE PRESEASON!!! It was the fourth quarter. It was because if Shockley that we even had a chance in that game. He had to run in circles in the backfield just to get a pass off! That drive had a crappy ending but it showed me that DJ did everything he could to get the team in a competitive, almost game-winning situation.

Obviously, the $72 mil investment will be the starter, DJ should be #2, and Petrino’s protege Redman will be kept around to remind us all of the marvelous ‘07 season. Redman and Petrino lovers, take heart. I do believe that Harrington’s best bet would be to find a way to Chicago. Hell, Grossman himself got to the Superbowl. Harrington, though shell-shocked, is much more talented than that hack.

i dont understand how anyone in their right mind would want to keep Joey Harrington. he seems like a nice guy but he is a terrible QB.
people say he didnt prove himself. Well under the same conditions he proved himself worse than Chris Redman who wasnt even in the league a year before. he hasn’t kept his job anywhere he has been.
You already know joey cant win as a starter, he has never held a job and has a very weak throwing arm. he cant even throw the deep out.
Keep Shockley, and he MAY have an upside, better to keep someone one who has a possible upside vs keeping someone that we know has no upside. use your heads people, its not about UGA its about value and D.J has more value than Harrington simply because of the unknown if nothing else.

Actually, as I said Shockley has two INT’s Harrington has one.
I am not against DJ being on the team, I am against idiots who think that he should be number 1 on the team.
I said it before I like him over Harrington, but people got on their soapboxes about Shockley deserving to be number one when he is fighting for number 3 and before last game he was losing. If you read some of the earlier posts, some of these so call “fans” were pushing Shockley to be number 1. Read it all first…

Unbelievable - the AJC pushing this nonsense of a phoney “competition” between Harrington and Shockley. Nothing could be further from the truth. These are both 2 very different players - both good guys - but totally different. Either the team wants an experienced Veteran QB to help the million dollar rookie — OR, they want 2 rookies. Harrington was NOT doing mop-up duty last night to “prove” anything! Who in their right mind would buy that. Check out AJC’s stupid QB poll… THIS week. Every week another stupid QB poll - Gimme a break AJC!!!
IF Smith, Dimitroff, Blank, are running this team like a bunch of politicians - they will keep Shockley. Sure - he’s the “popular” guy and they DO want to sell tickets… IF - they want to be professionals and keep the guy with experience, Harrington stays a Falcon one more year… simple as that. The decision has already been made - stupid AJC Poll - or NO poll.

Shockley is a 7th round draft pick, 7th round, that’s it. Stop trying to make him into more than he is. He has no experience and his style of play doesn’t fit the style of play the Falcons are looking for at QB. Redmond and Harrington are vetern qb’s that fit the mold and can step in if need be. Ryan can learn from their experiences. Atlanta doesn’t have the time or room to develop a 3rd string qb, and they don’t have to. Do DJ a favor and give him his release so he can try and sign on with a team that needs a 3rd string project qb.

There is a lot of emotion on this blog. The Falcons can only afford to have one Project QB and that project is the million dollar boy that will be starting (Matt Ryan for you folks in Athens GA). Matt will need experienced QBs bringing him along this year. Shockley has no experience in the NFL, at least not against starters. That is not the coach’s fault; that is where Shockley’s ability placed him. Harrington is a good QB that will be able to finish a game if needed. Shockley simply does not have the ability to do that, at least not now. For you folks that are not from Atlanta, most of the blog entries are from UGA fan just wishing for one of their own to succeed. They are not being objective. Shockley needs to be released and maybe, just maybe he might be picked up by a team that is deep in QB experience that can work with him. That would be good for Shockley too. He would get the benefit of experienced teaching and be away from the misguiding influence of a local media and UGA fans that are building him bigger than he is.

I was doing some Research and i found out that if you compare Matt Ryan(fifth yr starter) and Dj Shockly’s(1 yr starter in sec) senior seasons. this is how they add up: D.J. Shockley Passing Statistics CMP ATT YDS CMP% YDS/A TD INT RAT 173 310 2588 55.8 8.35 24 5 148.3 Also rushed for 322yds and 4td’s Team record was 10-2 (sec championship)
Matt Ryan Started every game as a senior (3rd Yr. Starter)2007 att comp yds com% ypp td int.scks Qbrtg. 388 654 4507 59.3 6.89 31 19 21 127.04
also rushed for 2 yds off 68 carries for 2 td’s he was 11-3(lost acc championship to vt)
This is what troubles me about MAtt its the 19 ints(second most in collegiate football)he throws in college. This means he takes way too many chances and against better talent and more speed thats not good. Also the 21 sacks in college..how can he be efficient in te pros if he’s always on his back! Now both put up huge numbers but why is Matt the Pro quarterback and the anointed starter and D.J. is not even getting a snap with the first team?
Answers welcomed!!!!

His QB rating was 15.3 against the scrubs of the colts. At least DJ will help sell tickets, so all there games will be on TV. DJ will help us see Ryan play every sunday this year. List of NFL records and milestones In 2006, Vick became the only quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards during the regular season. In 2006, Vick set the NFL record for most yards per carry in a season, at 8.4. When Vick and RB Jerious Norwood both ran for over 100 yards in Week 4 of the 2006 season, the Falcons became the only NFL team to ever record two games in a franchise’s history where both the quarterback and a running back on the same team surpassed the 100-yard mark in the same game. (Vick and Warrick Dunn both eclipsed 100 yards in Week 2 of the same season.) Vick (1,039 yards) and Dunn (1,140) became the first QB/RB tandem in NFL history to each go over the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the same season. They also became the fourth set of teammates in league history to each have 1,000 or more yards. The last set of teammates to accomplish the feat were Cleveland RBs Kevin Mack (1,104 yards) and Earnest Byner (1,002) in 1985. Earned his second consecutive and third overall Pro Bowl nod in 2005 as he passed for 2,412 yards and 16 touchdowns in addition to leading all NFL quarterbacks with 597 rushing yards and six scores. Named to the second Pro Bowl of his career after leading the Falcons to their third division title in team history and breaking numerous NFL and team records in 2004. Set an NFL postseason record for a quarterback with 119 rushing yards in the 2004 NFC Divisional Playoff win against the Rams. Became the first quarterback to ever throw for more than 250 yards and rush for over 100 yards in the same game at the Broncos (October 31, 2004). Named to the 2002 Pro Bowl, becoming the seventh quarterback to be voted to the NFL All-Star game in his first year as a starter since 1970, joining Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins (1983), Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers (1992), Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams (1999), Daunte Culpepper of the Minnesota Vikings (2000), Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles (2000), and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots (2001). This group would later include Marc Bulger of the St. Louis Rams (2003), Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (2006), and Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys (2006). Top overall NFL draft choice in 2001 after a celebrated college career at Virginia Tech. Was the fourth Falcons #1 overall pick in club history (Tommy Nobis in 1966, Steve Bartkowski in 1975, Aundray Bruce in 1988)

So 72-million dollars later, we have the “FACE OF THE FRANCHISE”. Well face time is over, it’s now time to play some “real” competition.
Perhaps he gives good interviews, and carries himself in a good manner. The last time I checked, in the trenches “nice guys finish last”.
Joey Harrington was a joke, but he really was not the issue, because he didn’t really get an outrageously high salary, although what ever he earned was an over payment.
The real problem is giving away 72-million dollars to a guy who only speaks well in interviews, yet on the playing field the only thing he will be speaking of is how that turf tastes or why was he throwing to the opposint team so much, perhaps he will be in need of new prescription glasses, because 72-million dollar quarterbacks get wins and not losses.
According to this blog and prior blogs, MV7 didn’t speak very well, yet he managed to become the 2nd winniest quarterback in this 40 plus pathetic history. How could a guy that wears corn rolls accomplish such a goal, yet couldn’t pass to save his life according to the blogs?
How could someone that according to these blogs couldn’t read defenses, yet his touchdown to interception ratio was one of the best in the league. This is mind blowing.
How could a guy who couldn’t read defenses manage to pass for 24 touch downs while rushing for another 1,000? It leaves me to think that reading defenses is over-rated or is it. I mean it must be over rated if you pay a guy 72-million dollars and couldn’t win an ACC championship game and in the process manage to give away 19 picks in a 5th year.
Interesting indeed.

DJ shouldn’t start this year. I’m happy that he made the team, but let him carry a clipboard. It should make him a better long-term QB. And I wouldn’t put him in special situations, because it will hamper his development.
Treat DJ the way that the Falcons should have treated Matt Ryan. Let him carry a clipboard, get a headset, evaluate the decisions, and practice hard and get really comfortable.

Manny I agree with you, DJ should’nt start and Matt should be holding a clipboard too. I’ll give Matt three games before he’s benched and Redman will be in the game.

DEAR SANTA:
I have been a good boy this year and I only have one request on my shopping list. Can I please make the playoffs? It’s been so long. Can you please send a hero?
FROM THE DESK OF SANTA:
Dear Unbiased, you had been granted the greatest athlete that God has ever created but you rejected my gift. Eventhough he went to Lambough Field and beat the legendary Brett Favre in his back yard at a time when he had NEVER lost in the playoffs at Lambough Field and this was a quarterback in his first full season as a starter and finished in the top 5-finalist for the LEAGE MVP.
He later went on to lead this team to the Championship game, with an undersized (180) running back, who previously never managed to rush for more than 700 yards in a season, yet had 3-consecutive 1,000 seasons. Not only did he have an undersized running back, he also had no wide receivers, no offensive line and an overrated defense.
Because your city has rejected my gift, you will be forever jinxed and have returned to mediocre results and will continue to do so. No matter how many “great white hopes” or “face of the franchises” that you come up with, you will not break the curse.
M E R R Y C H R I S T M A S !!!!

Nice pre-season, boys. Hard but good choices in the cuts. This team is better than people think, I believe. I am glad they are being written off and looked past. Reminds me of 1998 in many ways. They will win at least 7 games this year. If they believe in each other, who knows?
