A win is a win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Not that this win matters much, but it’s nice to go out on a winning note. Don’t think anyone is going to be happy with a 4-win season, but it’s better than a 3-win season.
It wasn’t an impressive win by any means, but once again, the Falcons didn’t quit.
Redman played great. I think this guy deserves a chance to be a backup somewhere. Awesome to see the Falcons get some quick scores.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Blank does in the offseason. The Falcons need a lot of help, from the top down.
There’s always next season.
Go Falcons!

Winning a meaningless game against a team that sat their starters in the 2nd half, and losing out on the next L.T. in Darren McFadden. Way to go Falcons. I guess a top 5 pick isn’t too bad.

I’m happy with finishing the season on a winning note. I’m glad Coach Thomas got to experience a victory while in charge. Sure, it cost us draft position but finishing with a win was cool.

On the positive side, they held the first team to a tie. Abraham played well. I’m glad to see a spark of life from the team. Yeah, that #2 pick would have been nice, but maybe this game answered some questions about personnel.

BACKUP??? Hell Chris Redman has played like a true starter the last few weeks BIRD BRAIN! Give him a decent offensive line with Norwood lined up in the back field and they will SCORE! I hope Emmitt Smith would reconsider coming back next year. Within a few games he has got these dimwits playing like REAL men. If King Arthur truly gets McKay out of the GM role and they get a real personnel guy in there WE WILL HAVE A CHANCE and the Falcons will really kick some A$$!!!!!!!!

Whoever we hire as GM I sincerely hope that the draft will center around solidifying both the oline and dline. Redman is a serviceable STARTING quarterback if we can give him time to throw the ball. His mobility is adequate. We also need to let Brooking go (enough already!!!) We also need to hire Caldwell from Indianapolis, Ryan from Baltimore, or Schottenheimer as head coach. Until next year: GO FALCONS!!!!!!

From my viewpoint, Coach Thomas has earned a shot at the job. Make him the coach. The Falcons have also found a quarterback. Give Redman the job and add some other pieces. Stability is an important thing for any football team and Coach Thomas and Redman provide that!

Of course these lazy thugs win the finale and knock us out of getting the opportunity to get a sure fire impact player in next years draft. BEAUTIFUL. They can’t win any important games and when we finally need them to lose one for draft position they play the game of their lives. A lot of teams with 4 losses so the falcons will probably be drafting 7th or 8th instead of top 3. It probably won’t matter anyway since we have the dumbest owner in professional sports. I wonder what turd he will hire next that will drive this franchise further into the ground.

Listen I like emmitt thomas and he is a great position coach. But do you really want a 65 year old rookie head coach learning on the job? The blue print has been laid out by teams like pittsburg and tennessee. Get solid leadership in the front office and hire a young and upcoming assistant and stick with him. My general manger canidates include: Reggie mcKenzie- greenbay / Bill Kuharich- KC / Jeff Ireland- Dallas. My head coaching canidates include: todd haley- arizona/ jason garrett- dallas / rex ryan- baltimore, etc. How about a package deal of ireland and garrett or ireland and haley? Haley also worked in dallas with ireland before he went to arizona.

Only the Falcons could win a game when the team would have been better off losing. Oh well, I can’t blame the players for playing for their jobs. The new coach will have this film all off-season.
Let’s hope that the new GM will realize that we need a NFL offensive line. I’d love to acquire a franchise left offensive taclkle in the draft or free-agent. Draft would be cheaper.

I completely agree brown paper bag. The highway is littered with first round flop quarterbacks. I happen to think that all the ones coming out next year are not worthy of a real high pick. But of course the win today pushes us down to 7th or 8th and I’m sure what ever retard Blank hires will be all over one of them.

Some of you people will always have something negative to say……the falcons have played with a lot of heart and compassion for the past two weeks and they finally won a game for the efforts…they have a lot of glaring needs that will not be solved by the next “LT” in Mcfadden as someone wrote earlier….by the way how many playoffs games have LT won in San Diego? Everyone at the dome went home happy today for a change, and at least for the moment forgot about all of the turmoil that has plagued this team this year.

I’m not sure Thomas would be interested. Isn’t he supposed to retire after 28 years coaching? He’s supposed to be a shoo-in for HOF. I thought he was chosen because of his experience and because he was safe. If either coordinator coached the last 3 games and failed (with this cursed team a probability), then they couldn’t be considered next year. Picking Thomas was the safest choice and protected their coordinators from fallout.

Retard, we’ve had Ronald making the decisions for quite sometime and he’s not worked out all that well. Coach Thomas has had the team playing much better and he deserves the shot. He’s in his sixties, so what? The guy knows football and he’s a calming influence. He brings stability to a team that hasn’t had any in many a year and that’s what this franchise needs more than anything else. Keep him and Redman and build up in other positions. Some of the people you mentioned are excellent candidates for head coaching positions but we shouldn’t have an opening here!

David Duke, all I’m trying to say is this franchise is so far from respectability that hiring a 65 year old head coach seems impractical. By the time we get this thing turned around we would have to be looking for another head coach. This franchise needs stability my friend and the way to go is hiring a young assistant. The falcons screwed up bad last year by not hiring ken wisenhunt. Of course hiring a good young coach is pointles if we don’t get a front office guru to assemble talented personnel.

The Falcons have had two guys, Mora and Petrino, who spent time as assistants and neither stayed here for very long. neither brought stability to the franchise and that’s exactly what is needed and what Coach Thomas has to offer. He’s a great football man and a fine human being. For once, give the good guy the job. He’s not flashy and he may not interview as well as some of the bright, young faces but he’s a steadying influence that is sorely needed. Keeping him should be priority number one. The players have settled down and played hard because there is peace and none of the quarterback goofiness Petrino engaged in. Mr. Blank brought in Mora on the strength of an interview. he brought in Petrino who mesmerized him and who turned out to be a duplicitous pretender, knowing nothing about coaching. Coach Thomas has no further aspirations. He’s loyal, talented and he’s honest as the day is long. Give the hard working, honest man the job! He deserves it and he provides exactly what the Falcons need!

it is retarded to think these guys should lose a game on purpose. And as far as Redman is concerned, why not draft a Ryan, Woodson or Brohm and then use Redman as your starter until one the young qb’s is ready. Redman, from what i have seen, is a decent qb-makes pretty good decisions and is honored to be playing in the league.

And us winning not only hurts our first pick, but our 2nd round, 3rd round…ect… once again… TERRIBLE!
At least Vick knew how to throw away games we needed to loose the last couple of years for better draft position!
Vick might not of been able to win the games when they counted most, but he shure could throw one away!

David duke, I guess you have you’re perspective on how things should work and I have mine. There is definitely more than one way to skin a cat. However, I wouldn’t refer to Petrino as an NFL assistant since he has spent most of his career in the college ranks. And Mora did leave here with a winning record and he had an idiot picking players for him. To be fair I do wonder how well mora might have done with a competent GM. BTW, check out www.profootballtalk.com/photo.htm and scroll down to see a photo of mckay( aka. ronald mcdonald) in his new job assignment. LOL!

On second thoughts, if the Falcons get a smart GM who understand the impact a Darren McFadden would have on the team is willing to trade on draft day, Falcons could still take McFadden through a trade.
Possible scenario will be packaging Atlanta’s first round pick (most likely the 6th pick in the draft) with someone like MeAngelo Hall to the team with the second pick in the draft for the right to draft McFadden. All of this is based on Dolphins passing on the RB slot in favor for the DT out of LSU.

I agree with BP Bag also. We know that one good running back does not make a winning team. Look at how Denver just plugs a decent running back into their system and he looks like the next great thing! We already have Redman and Shockley and if we can get some better lineman and a couple of linebackers we can do some damage! I believe with a line that can open some holes, Norwood and Snelling can be very serviceable running backs and even stars in the league. I would like to see a good guy with integrity as head coach here for the next twenty years (I respect Coach Thomas but he is not my pick for the sake of stability). I think Mike Singletary or Jason Garrett would be good picks.I would love for the current coordinators to remain so that we won’t have to start completely over with schemes. As one blogger pointed out we should have won 4-5 more games this year, so why blow up the team? With the right guy picking the talent(and I’m not convinced that McKay isn’t that guy) we can just reload gradually and still expect 9-12 wins a year in the process. I think the coach whose head and heart was not in it caused us a great deal of damage, included cutting a first rate Defensive tackle.

Mr. Blank, Please don’t waste any time even thinking about singletary as a head coach. Atlanta needs a brain surgeon mentality to turn this thing around. Find a smart, energetic coach who will surround himself with top-notch assistants, not soul-brother hanger-ons. Football may not be brain surgery, but it’s not bagging groceries either. Take your time ~ Mr. Blank ~ and be sure on this selection.

GREAT NEWS! I just read a source that figured out the top ten picks in next years draft and the falcons will pick 3rd. Apparently, they won all the tiebreakers with the 4-12 teams in the league. If the falcons would have won today they still would have picked 3rd because the rams lost and they held the tiebreaker against the falcons. Now don’t shoot me if this source turns out to be bogust but lets keep our fingers crossed. The tiebreaker is whichever team plays the weakest schedule picks ahead of the other teams. I will do more research and get back to you guys asap.

First Round Teams are listed with won-loss record, followed by composite strength of schedule. Among teams with the same record, the team with the weakest schedule picks first.
Miami (1-15, 138-118) St. Louis (3-13, 131-125) Atlanta (4-12, 129-127) Oakland (4-12, 132-124)* Kansas City (4-12, 132-124)* New York Jets (4-12, 133-122)* New England [from San Francisco (5-11, 119-137)] Baltimore (5-11, 132-123) Cincinnati (7-9, 117-138) New Orleans (7-9, 123-133) Buffalo (7-9, 132-124)* Denver (7-9, 132-124)* Carolina (7-9, 134-122) Detroit (7-9, 139-117)* Chicago (7-9, 139-117)* Arizona (8-8, 111-145) Minnesota (8-8, 129-127) Houston (8-8, 132-124) Philadelphia (8-8, 144-112) Tampa Bay (9-7, 119-137) Washington (9-7, 142-114) Tennessee (9-6) Dallas [from Cleveland (10-6, 110-146)] Seattle (10-6, 106-150) Pittsburgh (10-6, 116-140) New York Giants (10-6, 132-124) San Diego (11-5, 128-128) Jacksonville (11-5, 132-124) Green Bay (13-3, 106-150) Dallas (13-3, 127-129) San Francisco (from Indianapolis) (13-2) New England (pick forfeited) (16-0, 120-135)* Notes:
*-Oakland picks before Kansas City on common games tiebreaker. Buffalo picks before Denver on head-to-head. Detroit picks before Chicago on head-to-head. -Does not count Tennessee’s last game. *-Does not count Indianapolis’s last game. Picks 20-32 are pending NFL playoff results. NOTE: The team with the lowest winning percentage at the end of the previous season drafts first in the NFL Draft. The Super Bowl winner drafts last, even if they do not have the highest winning percentage. The Super Bowl loser drafts next to last. Strength of schedule for the previous season is the first tie-breaker for teams with the same winning percentage (i.e. the team who has the lowest opponent winning percentage will select before a team who has a higher opponent winning percentage). Divisional and conference records are the next step in the tie-breaking procedure. As a last resort, a coin toss is used to determine the order of selection for teams with the same winning percentage. If a playoff and non-playoff team end the season with the same winning percentage, the non-playoff team selects before the playoff team regardless of strength of schedule.

These last three games have not been meaningless. When Petrino slinked off in the middle of the night, the Falcons were devastated and in total disarray. With the steadying influence of Coach Thomas and the excellent play of Redman, this rabble has been formed into an NFL quality team. Those of you who are lamenting this victory and pining for a loss are not really fans. DONT COUNT ON FALCONS PICKING 3RD, AJC REPORT INCORRECT Everything else that I am seeing on the net is reporting that ATL is tied for the 3rd pick with KC and Oak. I hope I am wrong, but it looks like our fate lies with a coin flip.

I doubt the Dolphins or Rams will select McFadden. Parcells would never draft a running back first overall and the Rams have Steven Jackson. The Falcons have more pressing needs anyway. They need to fix the o-line or it won’t matter who lines up in the backfield.

Why not bring Emmitt back as head coach..
Why is it u are willing to let a young white OC as in Garrett be blogged in as head coach and say that Emmitt is not head coachng material??
He has experience..
Why not have someone who is older and experience than to have someone who is young and inexperienced?
U can push for Redman as the starting QB,during this run but not the coach who installed D.Hall to run back punts, let his co-ordinators run the offense, get the respect from his players on both sides of the ball who want him as HC,and almost like Dan Reeves,a potential hall of fame player..
Bring back Ken Herock to draft and put the team together, and let emmitt run this team!!

My hats off to Coach Thomas. The Falcons have played inspired football the last three weeks. It just goes to show what a coach can do that has NFL experience. Go out and get Singletary & keep Thomas. Can’t wait to see what unfolds with those bimbos in the front office. Till next year…The Blitz

I am ashamed at some the hate filled comments that i have seen on this blog today. The antisemtic remarks about Authur Blank were uncalled for. Iam not of Jewish faith but they are Gods chosen people. he hurts more than any of you idiots who call yourself falcon fans when they lose. the only mistakes that he has made was trusting people who he thought had the same goals that he has .that goal is to win a Super Bowl. He trusted a convicted felon in Vick.He trusted Mckay to pick out N.F.L.talanted players and coaches where he failed. He tuusted Mora & Petrino to lead these player and they failed. Hopefully he will get in right this time. But none us have suffered any more than he has .So to all of the Blank haters just shut up.

Blank must now deal with the terrible decisions that he has made since buying the team. He is the one who purchases these Koons. He must now attempt to sell these Koons and purchase new ones to replace them. This will not be an easy task. These Koons are damaged goods and will not command a competitive price at the market.

For the second year in a row, you guys have the RB with the leading yards per carry avg in the NFL (at least 100 carries for season). Adrian Peterson is second only to Jerious Norwood. Norwood also led the league last year in yards per carry. It appears he’s also a pretty good receiver. Yet, he appears to barely be a part of your offense. What gives??? I’m a Broncos fan, and we’d love to have him to go with Jay Cutler. Since you guys have your hearts set on McFadden, you ought to deal Norwood while the iron is hot. I bet we’d give you comparably used player and possibly a draft pick.

Can someone please point to one thing Mike Singletary has done in the past five years that would qualify him to be the head coach of any team.?
No doubt, he’s a nice, ethical guy; but what has he done to be considered as a turn-around-coach of a very dysfunctional franchise?

Bird Babe, WHY would you want Redman to be a back up on any other team than our Falcs? I think he’s more than decent AND should be allowed to compete for the starting job in training camp with whomever we sign in free agency. (PLEASE do not waste a high draft pick on a QB who will hold out and not learn the playbook. Brady Quinn!!!)

I just read the article on Singletary. PLEASE don’t hire this man! I’m sure he’s a nice guy…I’m sure he’s an emotional, firey guy… full of sound and fury, but singifying nothing at the end of the day (to borrow from Hamlet).
We’ve had that already…we had it with Glanville, we had it with Mora. We’ve also had the pencil-headed, studious offensive “geniuses” (Petrino, june Jones, etc). We NEED a guy with solid NFL pedigree and that man is Marty. Why is this even a debate?!?!?!?
I mean…did you read Singletary’s comments? Basically, his approach is that he would want to win really really badly….and if you want something badly enough you will succeed. Are you freaking kidding me?!?! And his offensive philosophy? Basically he says he wants to have balance and a good QB. Jesus Christ where do I sign up to ba an NFL head coach?!
Be honest….the vast majority of you only want him because you recognize his name, and/or because he’s black. What a pathetic, pitiful city and franchise.

Norm Hecker is blogging now. Hecker was the first coach of this sorry franchise and was the laughing stock of the league while he was in Atl. Do us all a favor NORM, go crawl back under that rock you came from and take Marion Cambell with you. You are a closet queen who’s time has come and gone. You are no different than the ignorant negroes on this board who support Vick. We dont need any posts from a closet queen who references the sorry sordid history of this franchise you ignorant sack of sh}it!

Hecker’s first name was Norbert and he was called Norb . He was one of the players who started the player’s union and he was a pretty good player. He had precious little success as a coach here in Atlanta. From 1966-68 his Falcons teams won four of thirty-one. Actually, forty years down the line, we can look back and see that Hecker set the bar and no coach has deviated from the standard he set so many years ago. Oh, there have been brief forays into winning but, for the most part, coaches have adhered to the Hecker standard and, as a result, this franchise has amassed close to four hundred losses in unimaginable haste. Hecker set the standard for all the losers that have followed. From Van Brocklin to Henning to Petrino the Hecker standard has been adhered to. Let’s be proud of our losing tradition and the coach who got it all going in high gear-Norbert Earl Hecker.

I knew alot of you nuts are going to say “Redman is great; give him a shot”. He only went through the crap that was Petrino one game, while Harrington had to endure the WHOLE SEASON!! This is Harrington’s 3rd team in as many where the coach treated him like crap, the coach gets the boot, but the “Johnny come lately” QB gets more pub for playing with the interim. Harrington never received a fair chance. If someone doesn’t believe me, I’ll give you all the rundown, plus give you a 5-point test for you to see if your favorite QB is a bust because of him or his situation.

I’ve asked for anyone to give me one good reason why Singletary should even be considered for the HC of this dysfunctional franchise.
Can someone give me one example of anything he’s done over the past five years that would serve as a qualifier for a head coaching position anywhere?
Why is he even on the long list, let alone a short list to head up this organization.
I’m sure he’s a great guy, but the woods are full of great guys. We need a freakin’ miracle worker. At least, someone with turn-around experience as a head coach.
Take your time, Mr. Blank. Let’s get it right this time.
Adios, and a Happy New Year to all Falcon fans.

What the Falcons need is Coach Thomas! Why not? What is there to lose? This franchise has 381 losses in its history, it’s not as if there is some glorious history to safeguard. Give Coach Thomas a chance, he can’t fail any more miserably than each and every other coach ever employed here!

Thanks for the history lesson Mr. Duke. I do have some memory of Norm Van Brocklin. I was a very young lad when he was givin the ax. Around 6 or 7 years of age. I have heard of Van Brocklin’s dislike of Harmon Wages and grew up watching Wages on channel 5. Also, I remember Van Brocklin residing in Social Circle on a farm if I have that correct?. Do you remember the gritz blitz with Glanville and Leeman Bennett? How about the 12 and4 team that went to Dallas and knocked out Staubach? Danny White comes into the game and leads the Cowboys to victory. If you recall, late in the 4th quarter, Ed “to tall” Jones initially jumped off sides but somehow managed to get back and miraculously “fall” down the line of scrimage before making the tackle that gave the ball back to the Cowboys. White leads them to victory and the rest as they say is history. In my opinion, that game started the curse that hangs over the Falcons even today.

If Mr. Blank wants to hire Singletary, so be it. However, I don’t know of any distinction he’s earned as an assistant that would augur for great things as a head coach. Another snap decision made in haste, to be lamented in excruciating remorse over the next few days, months and years!

If Jewthur Blank hires Singletary, it’s just another goofball blunder. This team needs to get more white, not darker. Consider the obvious: if Singletary sucks, which he may or may not, the F’cons will not be able to fire him. A white coach can be fired at the drop of a hat. Look how all the Vick lovers still cry about OOkie being gone, even though OOkie basically sucked as a NFL QB, and the IQ 75 idiot put himself out of football. These Vick lovers (mostly black BTW), will take up the Singletary banner, and defend him no matter how bad he may be. It’s not about winning with these morons, it’s about social engineering. Personally, I’ll just watch it all happen and laugh.

The word in league circles is that none of the good GM canidates want any part of Atlanta. Blank is a meddling owner and his stock has plummeted in the eyes of many around the league. In fact just read the recently released statement by Ron Wolf who said he wants no part of the falcon franchise. Why is it that the falcons have yet to set up an interview with one of the top potential GM canidates? If they were going to hire a GM and give him full control then they would hire the GM first so he could do the coaching search. Speculation persist that Blank may end up relinquishing his stance that he will strip Mckay of his power and just bring in an underling instead who will not have final say over personnel. The end result will be mckay and blank running the show once again which would spell disaster for us beaten down falcon fans. If that happens I’m finished after 30 years as a fan of this miserable franchise. I can’t take anymore of this $hit. I live in north georgia so maybe I will follow the titans since they are only two hours away. Blank has destryoed the goodwill he had built in his first few seasons as owner and now he has sunk lower than the smith family.
Whitey are you making up a phony report because I haven’t found anything saying singletary is about to become coach of the falcons. In fact I read a report saying that Nolan is likely out in SAN FRAN and they want to retain singletary as their head coach.

As Jeff Schultz said tn a recent post, the Atl is no longer a Falcons town. Blank has made a alot of mistakes. He is a nice and decent man. Nevertheless, critical mistakes have been made. And yes, most GM candidates want nothing to do with the Falcond because of Blank. Has anyone at the AJC or the atlanta media called Blank to the carpet for being so meddlesome? These Koons seem destined to stay pathetic and irrelevant for years to come.

The football fans of Atlanta have never really had all that much to cheer about. This franchise has lost almost four hundred regular season games in forty-one years of existence. The average number of losses per season has been 9.29. Sixteen head coaches, counting fill-ins, have been in charge here. Being a Falcons’ fan has been an exercise in futility and in humility. There’s so much to be humble about. The sentiment after a disastrous season has always been to hire the next flim-flam man as quickly as possible and get him in here to let the losing begin anew. This time, take some time! If Coach Thomas is interested, make him head coach and bring in a good personnel person. Cut all the players who made a spectacle of themselves, and the organization, on national television in support of a criminal. Shoot for little victories because this quagmire can not be walked away from quickly. The fortunes of the Falcons can be changed but not if you keep doing all the things that have been prove, time and again, not to work!

Well, i’d rather have jerry Jones! Mr. Blank is not a fool but his decisions have not always been good. He tends to believe what these “carneys” tell him and that’s always a mistake. He gets carried away in interviews and hires people based on that. Hopefully, he’s learning that the flim-flammers are well-practiced at being engaging and charming. It’s their business to be that way. In truth, it’s all they have. The best thing he can do now is hire Coach Thomas if he has any interest in the job. Coach Thomas is a guy who works hard and has been with the Falcons for years. He’s not trying to make an impression. Look for substance! Forget the flash! You want a guy who actually wants to do more than just get the job and get paid. Coach Thomas is such a man. He’s been in the league as a player and he was an All-Star. He didn’t become a prominent player just based on his ability. There was a lot of hard work involved. Unlike the past two coaches, Coach Thomas is not accomplished at selling himself. He’s not some phony product that needs to be sold on a late-night infomercial. He’s the real deal! He’s what you need. He’s the genuine article! Arthur, before you go chasing after some high-priced, flashy, football prostitute, give a look at what you got at home. You have your heart’s desire down the hall from you. Reward the good and trustworthy fellow who doesn’t know how to make himself seem a big deal but who works his butt off to do the job right!

David Duke, I would be o.k. with thomas but what this franchise needs most is a personnel guru. It doesn’t matter who the coach is if the team lacks talent. In over 40 years of exsistence this franchise has yet to have a hall of famer. To put that into context, the steelers had three from one draft! The biggest issue with the falcons has always been terrible personnel decisions and sorry drafts. BTW, thomas was quoted recently as saying he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to coach anymore and might consider retirement this year.
Mad dog, you said “arthur blank did not get rich because he is stupid”. That statement is kind of an oxymoron because all NFL owners are rich. Arhtur blank’s success in the business world does not guaruntee that he will turn the falcon’s into a consistent winner. If you don’t believe me just look at wayne huizenga and the dolphins. Huizenga’s pretty damn smart himself, he is the founder of blockbuster video but his stewardship of the dolphins has been horrible.

Mad dog, I’m not trying to beat up on you but Im not sure what you meant by saying “look how long it took Jerry Jones”. Jones purchased the cowboys in 1989, blew everything up, then won a super bowl just four years later in 1992. Thats about as good as it gets. The difference between jones and most NFL owners is that Jones has a strong football background. He played major college football at Arkansas with the likes of jimmy johnson and barry switzer. So his involvement in the football operations side of the cowboys has actually been a positive, whereas blank’s meddling has been mostly negative. Basically, one owner that understands the game and another that does not. If blank wants to succeed he must find a great football mind, hand him the keys to the franchise and get the hell out of the way.

I’m afraid Mr. Blank hasn’t learned all that much. He’s been going from one well-known flim-flam man to the next, trying to hire a new pied piper to lead the lemmings off the nearest cliff. He’ gone from Parcells to Marty Schottenheimer to Ron wolf. Sadly, some con man, similar to Petrino, will say yes and the cycle will begin anew. Hire coach Thomas, if he will have the job, and hire a personnel guy. Then, get the hell out of the way!
