Almost not good enough

The Falcons played too conservative on their last drive of the fourth quarter. When you’ve won only three games, you have to take chances. They should have stuck with what gave them a chance to win - Redman. He was on fire, hitting a different receiver all over the field. Score a touchdown and make them counter.

Redman looked like a veteran in the second half, spreading the ball around and directing scoring drives. The O-line gave him time to throw and receivers were getting open and making the catches. Robinson and Roddy looked great. Did you see the catch Roddy made? That was awesome.

The Falcons made a great adjustment at half after giving up 24 points in the first half. The defense shut down the Cardinals in the second half except for the last drive of the fourth quarter when they just couldn’t stop Warner. Disappointing to give up three points in the second half and not be able to stop them in overtime.

But, at least they fought back and didn’t give up.

Go Falcons! One more to go before you can reload for next season.

Once again the prevent-a-win “defense” worked to perfection—for the other team. Oh well, wait ‘til next year when we can do it some more.

Great game! Really, the birds didn’t lay down, nor did they mess up their draft. No shame in losing in overtime. The Falcons were competitive and made the Cards work for the win. Congrats to Emmitt Thomas…perhaps a diamond in the rough!?

12-losses and maybe 13? That’s nearly as many as they had the last 2 seasons combined. That sucks!

Good game Falcons I was torn with winning and losing. The Falcons need that 2nd or 3rd pick in the Draft. A win would probably meant the 4th pick. However, if they don’t pick the right player it won’t matter anyway.

Listen here you bunch of LOOSERS!! The Falcons should have tried to score a touchdown on the final drive!! NO!!, let’s kick a field goal and go into a prevent defense!! Genious!!! Oh wait, this is the same Falcons who I have been supporting for 30 years.
Hey Arthur, I’m glad your Home Depot deal paid off. Your sports investment sucks. This is the same losing bunch of crap that Atlanta has been putting up with forever.
Can’t wait till next year!!! Maybe we can be 4-12. What an improvement!!! Sick of this crap!! Thomas

The Falcons, especially Redman, played very well. I was disappointed in the ultimate result but it was heartening to see good, honest effort. I hope Mr. Blank will make Coach Thomas “the coach and drop the term interim from his title. Redman looks like a good starting quarterback to me. Get rid of the malcontents, grifters and bums and get the team on the right road.

The Falcons are F+++++G gutless quitters without any dignity, pride or honor! Mailed another one in. Par for course. Losers are losers and quitters are quitters! Offer Andersen and Norwood contracts in 2008. Send rest of MF CS SOBs packing! The sooner their stench is out of Atlanta the better. Complete wastes not worth oxygen they breath! To Hell with all but two of them! Could their plane pull a Marshall? F++K them. Merry Christmas!

Some bloggers may embrace losing (DirtyBird) or moral victories (which are only urban legends no such things). Professionals are paid (WELL) to not only compete (TRY) but win! Falcons quit from first kickoff of game one. Truth. Quitting must NEVER be condoned or embraced. Only Andersen and Norwood displayed heart, pride and fire. Rest of Falcons laughed all way to bank. DEMAND THE BEST! NEVER SETTLE! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hoping for a plane crash to kill all the Falcons is about as low a thing as I’ve ever seen here on this blog. it’s alright to question integrity, heart and dedication but it’s something else altogether to wish them dead because they aren’t a good team. In the final analysis, football is nothing more than a game. It’s not all that important. Certainly, it’s not important enough to focus such neanderthal hatred at those you perceive to be under-achieving. Your remarks are shameful and beneath contempt!

Hi Bird Babe. Now this from mouth of dog-murdering felon worshipper Roddy Butterfingers White: “When you go out there and you put everything out there on the line (uh huh), and you just come up a little bit short, it’s tough, man. I wanted to break down and cry after the game (cry me a F+++++G handful quitter). All my teammates, we played hard (liars go to Hell). We give it our best (sad if true but probably another lie). We just can’t get any breaks (winners make own breaks). It’s like somebody or something doesn’t want us to win football games (losers ALWAYS find SOMEBODY else to blame for own shortcomings).” F++K White and ALL Falcons except Andersen and Norwood! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

You do have a right to your opinion! However, I think it’s pretty sad you would take the game so seriously that you would like to see the Falcons die in a plane crash. Football is a diversion, manufactured for consumption by those of us who have become addicted to watching it. That’s all it is. It, really, contributes nothing to the quality of life of anyone other than to those who benefit from it directly or indirectly. I don’t play it, coach it, own a team and I don’t write for a newspaper about it. It’s a diversion I avail myself of when I have nothing else to do. I enjoy watching but I don’t feel as intensly about it as you.

It’s just a bunch of people running up and down the field with a ball. Not that big of a deal. The Falcons suck now, and they will be good later. Just like every other team in the NFL.

Of course, if they would let me run the team, they would become good much faster. Hire Schottenheimer, draft linemen early, sign Michael Turner to play RB, keep Redman around for now, bring back Vick in ‘09. Ain’t gonna happen, but oh well.

By Najeh Davenpoop

December 24, 2007 1:24 AM | Link to this

By the way, while the Falcons are sucking, you may want to make yourself aware of this fact: there is another sports team in Atlanta that is actually pretty good. You may or may not have heard of them — they play in Philips Arena, and their sport involves bouncing a ball on a wooden floor and putting it in a basket. So all hope is not lost, Atlanta sports fans.

Falcons have Schottenheimer, Nix in sights

By Kevin Acee

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

December 21, 2007 In the Atlanta Falcons’ attempt to rebuild their football operations, they apparently are considering becoming a sort of Chargers Southeast. League sources said yesterday the Falcons have made overtures to former Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer about being their next head coach and are considering hiring Chargers Assistant General Manager Buddy Nix to be their general manager.

Atlanta lost coach Bobby Petrino to the University of Arkansas last week, and according to a statement from the Falcons, Rich McKay will be replaced as general manager.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank first talked with Bill Cowher about running the team, but Cowher reportedly told him he was sitting out from coaching at least one more season. Atlanta then made a well-publicized run at Bill Parcells to head its football operations, but Parcells yesterday took the same job with the Dolphins.

Atlanta’s next fallback as coach is evidently Schottenheimer, who was fired by the Chargers in February after a 14-2 season but a second playoff loss in two tries. The hirings of Schottenheimer and Nix would be in concert, sources said.

Asked about the possibility of his right-hand personnel man leaving, Chargers GM A.J. Smith professed to know nothing about it.

“I have not heard about Buddy Nix, but I have heard the Coach Schottenheimer rumors,” he said. “If true, I believe a Buddy Nix-Marty Schottenheimer team in Atlanta would be a perfect fit… . Buddy got along well with Coach Schottenheimer. They socialized together, went out to dinner, golfed together, sat together on the plane, talked football all the time.”

Nix came to San Diego in 2001 along with Smith and former GM John Butler. Nix was director of player personnel in 2001-02 and ascended to assistant GM when Smith became general manager in 2003 after Butler’s death. The three also worked together in Buffalo before coming to the Chargers.

“I’d hate to lose him,” Smith said. “But it’s something he’s told me in the past he’d like to do – or explore it. If this situation should work out, I’d wish him the best.”

BTW, buddy nix just turned 68 and marty is close to being 65 years old. I’m of the opinion that blank should hire a young front office guru and a youthful and no-nonsense head coach like arizona offensive coordinator todd haley. Many around the league refer to haley as a young bill parcells. We need youth because it will take 3 or 4 years for this team to become relevant again. How about new engalnd’s scott pioli for general manager or dallas has a young highly touted executive as well.

I agree with David Duke??????

(That just sounds wierd.)

Anyway, it is true… this is mere entertainment. Actually, for all that has been going on with the Falcons and that now the owner is being a brunt of many jokes and punchlines, I thought they played rather well.

Think about it: the Falcons have a rookie at cornerback that really needed a year to sit. Plus, the genius that was Bobby Petrino traded in the best defensive player to the Jaguars, who’s going to the playoffs.

Next, the glue that held the entire team together went to prison for fighting dogs. And they started an insurance salesman at QB. We had a porous offensive line and a more mature RB who’s only 5’7” and weighs 165lbs. Oh, and then we discover the future RB isn’t durable enough to be an everyday back.

We traded our dazzling kickoff and punt returner to the Steelers (who’s going to the playoffs this year. You’re seeing a pattern?)

We have a field goal kicker where there are millions of adults who’s lives never existed without Morten Andersen kicking field goals in the NFL somewhere. Oh, and we have a short guy playing middle linebacker.

All of that being said, Emmitt Thomas did a good job. It’s Rich McKay that should go.

Babe, what good would a win do for us? We almost screwed up our pick. I think we are sitting at the 2nd or 3rd spot. Hey, I heard that Herman Edwards might become available, after the season.Maybe he could help us out next year, in some capacity, whether it be the Head man, or coordinator.

Herm edwards? Please tell me you’re joking! The guy has flopped as Kansas city’s head coach so why would the falcons want him? They have lost 8 games in a row which is worse than the falcons current swoon. I would rather take a chance on a young upcoming assistant than a retread like herman edwards. The jets were glad he took off for Kansas City when he left there because it saved them from having to fire him and pay out the remainder of his contract.

By terrell barron

December 24, 2007 11:38 AM | Link to this

The Chiefs have no talent, especially with LJ being injured. He did take Kansas City to the playoffs last year, and I think the Jets were there every year he was the coach. You cant put all the blame on the coach when his team struggles. The players have to EXECUTE. Coaching is very overrated. He kept the Jets in the postseason, with Chad “no deepball” Pennington, for crying out loud, and led the Chiefs to the playofs, just last year, with Damon freakin Huard, are you kidding me? The guy can coach. Hell, Lombardi couldn’t win with Brodie Croyle as his qb.

By Najeh Davenpoop

Herman Edwards is the worst clock management coach in the NFL right now. Hiring him would be a dumb move. The last thing the Falcons need is a retread.

By long time falcon

December 24, 2007 4:14 PM | Link to this

Herman Edwards career record as a coach is 52-59 which makes him a loser overall. His last 20 games as Jets coach the team had a 5-15 record and he probably would have been fired if he hadn’t bolted for Kansas City. Last year his team did make the playoffs at 9-7 and then preceded to have what has been described by some as one of the worst offensive performances in playoff history against the colts. The year before Kansas city actually had a better record at 10-6 under vermeil so it wasn’t like he came in and did something impressive. This season the chiefs are 4-11 with an 8 game losing streak going on 9 next week. So far he is 13-18 as kansas city’s head coach. You said “the guy can coach”. Well you’re in the minority when it comes to that opinion because most of the football world would dispute that statement. Like davenpoop said he is known in NFL circles as the worst clock manager in the entire league.

The marty schottenheimer and buddy nix to atlanta rumors are gaining steam so I expect thats who blank will hire. It’s been reported that blank made overtures to both and they will come as a package deal. The two are reportedly good friends and have common philosophies when it comes to player personnel. Nix has made it clear that he wants to be a general manager and at his age time is running out. Marty is 64 and if he wants to coach in the league again he to must regard the falcons opening as maybe his last chance. I expect an announcement soon unless blank gets cold feet and backs out.

Mountain Jim: I don’t think Dan Reeves is the man you want him to be. He’s way to honorable for you to use in your bigoted rhetoric.

Remember that Reeves got the same treatment that Crumpler and White got for a moment. In the heat of the dogfighting scandal, he called Vick and offered him support. While most Atlanta fans apparently freely disown friends with hangnails or speeding tickets, Reeves stated that it was times like those when friends need you the most. And that’s how Dan Reeves became one of those “thug felon Vick apologists.”

and to FREE MIKE VICK: It wasn’t “just some dogs” and everybody knows that. I don’t take the phrase “Free Mike Vick” seriously, because I remember the “Free James Brown” era and take the phrasing as something of a joke. So as Roddy White wears the shirt, I see it purely as support to a friend and teammate, not a statement of the worth of dogs. So whether you truly believe dogs are irrelevant or are just a troll trying to play up the Vick supporters as racists, you need to get some perspective.

By David Duke

December 27, 2007 11:18 PM | Link to this

Dan Reeves expressed friendship and concern for Vick when the charges were alleged. He, in no way, supports dogfighting or those who engage in it. Vick still faces other prosecutions related to the dogfighting and I doubt Reeves will be expressing support for this felon. Like Mr. Blank, Reeves only thought he knew Vick. What he knew was what Vick projected and now we all know he was a walking, talking lie!

Singletary seems like a good guy, but hiring him would basically be a repeat of Mora…it would be going after the young, hip, energetic coach just for the sake of style and show (no substance)….it would be going after another guy who could easily be manipulated by Blank and McKay, et al.

We need a guy with a track record and a plan that goes beyond getting everyone fired up. As we saw with Mora in the 2005 and 2006 seasons, you can have all the fire an emotion in the world at the beginning, but that can only tyake you so far….eventually you come crashing back down to reality if you don’t have a real plan and real talent.

We NEED Marty!!!!

By Carroll

December 28, 2007 10:25 AM | Link to this

The other reason I say that Singletary would be a repeat of Mora is because both are/were coaching very bad teams and defenses at the time they are/were being courted for the head coaching job. For God’s sake…our pitiful team is battling Singletary’s pitiful team for the second pick in the draft!! Hell, if that’s good enough to be a head coach, let’s just let Emmit Thomas have the gig!
