Too much Peyton

Peyton Manning was unstoppable tonight. We got to him a few times, but not enough. The run defense played great, but Peyton picked the defense apart.

The offense looked good in the first half. Field goals just aren’t enough. The Falcons still had a chance at halftime, but couldn’t get anything going in the second half. Bad field position, bad play-calling, bad penalties on special teams.

The Dome was full of Colts fans. I wanted so badly to win this game and shut up the group of six Colts sitting a few rows down from us, but Peyton was just too good.

That was not a running-into-the-kicker penalty. The punter did an acting job. Bad call!

Roddy had a good game and so did Boley, but it’s clear we need more talent.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving despite the outcome.

Go Falcons!

No “Sandwich” and whatever else name you people used to describe Byron Leftwich. You even said “at least Joey keeps us close”, 8-22 pass completions and 2 interceptions is not exactly keeping it close. Well I guess it’s Leftwich’s fault again :) Now don’t blame the line, because you didn’t blame the line last week. Bird “B” idiot, I guess in your eyes Joey was outstanding as ever. Makes me wonder who you had to sleep with to get your own blog :) So anyone want to praise Joey?

This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! This team sucks! It will be a long, long time before I give this organization ANY of my money, be it Season Tickets, Single Game tickets, Falcon clothing, $8.00 beers,,,,,, nothing,, zilch… what a pitiful collection of “professional” athletes, coaches and management. If Home Depot had been built, managed and run like this team, it would have gone the way of Zayre’s,,,, out of business and nothing but a memory. How do these people accept their paychecks without feeling like criminals ? It is a shame that this is the product that represents the city of Atlanta as a professional sports team. I say lets put the Bulldogs in Falcon jerseys, and put them out them. Would be way more competitive, and would at least give a full out effort during the entire game. Falcons,, you stink, and I don’t see anything changing for years to come……

Crumbler - Release zero effort blocking, 2 early drops… Crocker - Release tourched early, saved by penalty. Missed easy pick, next play touchdown. Brooking - Release. Can’t tackle, can’t pass defend, gets blown off the ball every play…ever wonder why the middle of the falcons D keeps get killed?

Joey didn’t have a great game, but he played better than Leftwich has, especially considering that first interception should have been a catch (and also a fumble, in my opinion).

This game was lost in last minute of the second quarter when Petrino refused to take a timeout to give his offense a chance get some momentum going into the locker room.

Talk about throwing in the towel early.

Joey engineered the scoring of 13 points. How many did ham sammich put up last week? The correct answer is 0. Joey didn’t play particularly well but he played much better than Buffalo Butt is capable of playing.

Anybody care to take a bet on how many touch downs Harrington will get this year? Anybody care to bet me that he will not even get half the total of last year’s quarterback? Now that is pathetic, but then again anybody is better than last year’s quarterback….ha ha ha

Well, I think the Bird Babe is improving. While she still hasn’t admitted that Joey Harrington “has room for improvement”, she did not start off with the blind praise that she usually spews out. For all of you losers that are blaming Leftwich when Harrington just finished playing like the “Replacement Player” that he is, you really need to wake up? Remember the old Joan Collins song….”Send In the Clowns”? Don’t bother they’re here…The Atlanta Falcons

The Colts simply have a better Offense than the Falcons. Not just one player, top to bottom. Colts WR’s are making catches, not dropping them. And like John Madden says it all starts in the trenches - Harrington did his best to move outside the pocket. O-Line broke down almost every play. Did anyone see Peyton Manning forced to run around outside the pocket? NO.

Falcons Defense is good but nobody is stopping Tony Dungy and his Colts. This team needs to go after O-Line in the Draft if Petrino wants a power blocking scheme. Joey Harrington is a keeper, and look to pickup a rookie QB next year. Fat Albert, err, Leftwich, was good at JAX 3 years ago but won’t be a Falcon in 2008.

FALCON FREDDIE - Finally somebody that is not blind and stupid. Harrington is a joke and those making excuses for him are even more idiotic or just plain bias for obvious and sinful reasons. How in the world was this guy a number 3 pick. Goes to show that scouts are not the brightest people.

The guy who quarterbacked the team last year is in prison and harrington had nothing to do with it. in your first, silly post, you defend ham Sammich and denigrate harrington and now you say it doesn’t matter because a loss is a loss. I’m sure it was not his fault though, just like here in Atlanta and Miami :) Vick used to run around the pocket all the time, but nobody made excuses about the line then. Unbiased:

The Lions are a playoff caliber team now? Not quite, granted their better; but that has nothing to do with getting rid of Joey…in fact the Lions had pretty much no improvement after getting rid of him.

The point is, Joey gives the Falcons a better chance to win than Byron right now. That’s not really saying as much about Joey as it does about Byron.

Joey Harrington has started 9 and has played in all 11 falcons games this yr….HE IS EVERYTHING THAT WE THOUGHT HE WAS, and we are not going anywhere with him…….Leftwich has not even played a whole game with the falcons this yr, and unless he gets a bona fide chance to play at least a full game, we can’t base what we think we know of him solely on the Tampa bay game. Joey has been playing all year and he still overthrew two TD passes tonight….Harrington did throw a nice pass to White, but other than that, he did not look any better than Leftwich did last week……..just like with what is going on in at Notre Dame with Coach Weis, I am reading comments from bloggers, including Bird Babe, that are giving every benefit of a doubt to Harrington, while holding Leftwich accountable for every missed, tipped, and dropped pass imaginable.

Now that Joey Blowey has STUNK again, where is his criticism? Where’s the throw under the bus now? Did he earn the next start now since you can’t say he WON this game? ATTENTION ATLANTA - Whether you like it or not, by Vick turning himself in early, and what I have been reading on ESPN he obviously has been told to check-in early so that he can satisfy the judge and “go through the motions” in satisfying the public and, he will be in uniform by next season. So you people might as well get prepared to see MV7 back in uniform and as bad as this team is, get ready for another playoff trip in 2008 and you people can’t make anymore excuses for the need of a drop back passer - he had 2 this season, and we see the results.

UB, I don’t know. It couldn’t be from Joey’s performance this year. It couldn’t be the fact that he has NEVER even played in a playoff game. Maybe it was getting cut TWICe by two other teams, one of which is doing better without him with the SAME players. Maybe its all the sacks that mostly come from him holding the ball like its super-glued to his freaking hand. Maybe its when he goes public first with his complaint of not be told he was not starting first before going public by the coach. His leadership? Naw. His strong arm? Naw. His stellar QB rating? Accuracy? Couldn’t be. Oh, I know its how well he handles the blitz? Un-unnh. Maybe if he just ONE bad game, they would cheer for Redman to come in next, but wait…he’s had seven so that couldn’t be it either. Sorry dude I just can’t figure out why they would possibly think “Slowey Joey” was a quarterback. You got me.

Tonight, she even talks about the bad field position and play calling, which is another veiled attempt to excuse Harrington’s overall performance tonight……..funny thing is, those are some of the same things that plagued Leftwich last weekend…….HEY Bird Babe…are you a dove, or a crow???? Detroit has changed there team a lot since Joey left: new receivers, young players gaining experience, a new head coach and offensive coordinator. It hardly can be called the same team.

Just look at Jeff Garcia, did no better than Joey in Detroit, and now he’s leading the Bucs into the playoffs. This is not to defend Joey’s play, but if your gonna attack him, use a sound argument

If you think Joey was the reason we lost tonight, you just don’t understand football. Harrington was not remotely the reason we lost this game. He played well enough to keep us in the game, but the Colts showed why they are better than us in all phases. There were at least 5 dropped passes, receivers not running routes (Joey’s 2 picks were due to receiver errors), numerous penalties that killed drives for us or sustained drives for them, horrible coaching (unbelievable how we failed to call a timeout until there were just seconds left in the half), poor play calling, an overwhelmed o-line that failed to open holes for Dunn or protect Joey, and our defense just didn’t get it done when it mattered the most. Not suggesting that Joey had a great game, but he played well enough to give us a chance and we just could not put it together. This team needs so much help in so many areas that it’s hard to know exactly where to start. I think it would be a mistake to let Harrington go and start all over again. Imagine Joey playing QB with New England or Indy or Pittsburgh….do you think he would suck? Not saying he is as good as Brady or Manning or Rothlesberger, but he’s not terrible, either. It’s obvious why Redman hasn’t played in over 3 years. He just isn’t very good and they can see it in practice. Wake up, people.

FALCON ONE - Who on the field is ultimately responsible for a loss? Who gets credit for the win? No excuses!

By Falcon One

November 23, 2007 1:38 AM | Link to this

A few facts: Harrington was not cut by Detroit. After Mariucci was fired and Marinelli arrive, they wanted him to stay, but he opted out. Joey felt there was no chance he could succeed in Detroit with all of the negativity.

Also, if you look up his stats with the Lions, he was rarely sacked his first 2 seasons. His reputation was that he got rid of the ball TOO SOON. Look it up. He was told to hold the ball longer, and his sack total increased after that.

It is true that Miami chose not to keep him, beause they would have had to pay him a $3 million bonus. They wanted him to stay for a lower salary, but Joey refused. So they did cut him. But it was mostly about the money, not his poor play. When Harrington was the QB with the Dolphins last year, they beat the Bears, Patriots, and Lions, even though they were not a very good team. And this year, without him, they are 0-10.

Is Joey a great QB? No. But does he suck? I beg to differ. The guy is not the athlete that Vick is, but he can win if given the tools to work with. The Lions, Dolphins, and Falcons are all average or poor teams.

By Preston

Falcon One- No one here said that Harrington was the reason we lost tonight……but, why do you feel as if you have to give a detailed account for him after the loss???…..you know, last week, Leftwich was attempting to throw a pass when the pocket collapsed on him, causing his passed to be tippped and intercepted by Tampa bay……he was also tripped by a lineman and the ball was swiped out of his hand causing a fumble…..remember the Tn game when one of their lineman jumped over ours, and sacked him for a loss in the backfield……you , know none of this was Leftwich’s fault…..he really is a good qb with a career winning percentage….I say he starts for us the next game…..what do you say, Falcon One?

By Falcon One

November 23, 2007 1:50 AM | Link to this

The reason why Harrington’s winning percentage is so poor is due to 2 things….

  1. He is an average to better than average QB. He will never be in that elite tier like Manning, Brady, etc. who can carry a team on his own. But that does not mean he sucks.

  2. He has been on 3 very lousy teams. Each of them with below average skill players, defense, and most importantly, lousy coaching. Mariucci, Saban, and Petrino are all below average coaches who have had their moments but none of them will be in the Hall of Fame for their coaching or leadership skills.

Our play calling and clock management has to be the worst in all of football, this includes everything from pop warner to the pros. The person that started the rumor that Petrino was some sort of offensive genuis should be banned from ever speaking again, dare I say that he is worse than last years clowns. With just under seven minutes remaining and needing two scores the Falcons methodically run four plays, using over four minutes and end up punting it back to Indy….. PATHETIC, just PATHETIC.

By Falcon One

November 23, 2007 1:57 AM | Link to this

If I were Petrino, I would start Harrington next week. In the meantime, I would tell Leftwich to get better, get healthy, and be ready to go in if needed. I think it’s a tossup between those 2 QBs, but for now I would still let Joey play because I think he gives us the better chance to win. Just my opinion. But if Joey has another poor game, I’d put Leftwich in. I’m not arguing that Joey is better than Byron, but for right now I would choose Harrington because I think he has played better so far. It’s close between those 2. I was surprised that Leftwich was released by Jacksonville. He must have refused to play between Garrard.

There are reasons why Leftwich got cut by Jacksonville. And even though there is a shortage of QBs, nobody picked him up right away, until the mighty Falcons did. This team is what it is. It’s a team centered around outstanding mobility from the quarterback position. That’s it!

Mike Vick left the biggest hole in a team that I simply cannot remember in football history. The Falcons are just not a good football team without him. And it’s going to take either another strong, mobile quarterback to replace Vick, or you’re going to have to find a bunch of offensive linemen.

I was saddened that they put a zone blocking scheme in last night. It didn’t work and the geniuses of the Falcons should have known better. That scheme was based upon the fact that there was a possibility of a bootleg from Mike Vick. It kept the defense from over-pursuing. But without that threat, they was just pinning their ears back and overloading the corner.

I can say this: Joey Harrington is no superstar. But he is not a bad QB. You can win with Joey, but Joey has to be put in a position to win.

For instance: Joey needs protection of at least 5 seconds. Joey needs every ball that hits the hands caught. Joey needs to feel comfortable and secure about the offense.

But Joey isn’t going to make it happen in Atlanta. Byron Leftwich isn’t either (he just takes too long to wind up.) What the Falcons need is a mobile QB that has some form of accuracy. Period, point blank.

My candidate would be DJ Shockley, if he can do it. If not, you need to draft someone that is like a Shockley.

But don’t go and get a Brohm or Matt Ryan or some other kid that is just going to get killed back there with very little protection.

Or just go and lose again next year with the same squad and wait for Tim Tebow in 2009. Hey, by that time, Mike Vick will be out of prison! Go and check with his parole officer and see if he can at least play home games, (hee, hee!!!)

I doubt anything could have made this Falcons team beat the Colts on Turkey Day, but someone needs to b*tch about the officiating. 1) Near the end of the 1st quarter, before Indy’s 1st touchdown, Falcons punt to Indy and there is no call on a flagrant block in the back by Indy. Right in front of the ref. Cost 25+ yards in field position. 2) That BS roughing the punter call. 3) The flagrant horse collar tackle and body slam on Harrington on the fumble run back. Refs saw it but they called it holding. 4) The pass catch that Petrino wanted to challenge. The ref was looking straight at the guy’s feet when he landed out of bounds. No challenge should have been necessary.

Maybe you people that are defending Joey Harrington are grading him by physical appearance and not actual game performance. This should help you: If a QB throughs the ball over the head, behind the back, and at the feet of the receivers…That is a poor passer. If he completes less that 50% of the passes thrown…(poor passer). If his team’s final score was doubled by the opposition (poor passer) If his team’s record is 3-8 and in last place(poor passer). If he throws more interceptions than TDs (poor passer). If his only legitimate claim to the job is that he’s clean cut, articulate and does not fight dogs (probably he’s a poor passer). People, these may be good enough qualitities to be the President of the United States, but in the NFL (which should stand for Not For Long) for Joey Harrington because…HE Is A Poor Passer! Look at what Peyton Manning did without his star receivers! WAKE UP PEOPLE!

if i had to draft a qb today i’d go for andre woodson or one of the strong armed dropback QB’s. Until vince young or j russell accomplishes something i’d stay away from the scramblers, because the wheels won’t last. quick setup, fast read, quick release, strong accurate arm is still the recipe for success in the NFL whether you like it or not, because it is still the best way to beat the blitz, which is the main thing separating the good from the mediocre. i thought vick would break the mold, and in some ways he did, but the running qb is just too exposed to injury to be worth the huge investment for a starting QB. aren’t we paying leftwich $3MM for the limited time he’s been able to stay on the field? that is what makes peyton and favre so special- they are always, always out there come hell or high water….

Well-said FALCON FREDDIE! Any Joey apologists (LOL) want to talk about last night’s 45.8 passer rating? I find it sickening how hypocritical “Falcons fans” (i.e. Bird Babe) REFUSE to rip Joey “Never-Had-A-Winning-Season” Harrington the way Leftwich was ripped last week! Anyone care to point out that the team has only won 3 out of his 9 starts?! By the way, in the win agianst the Saints, his passer rating was 55.1…so, at best, I’ll really credit Joey w/ 2 wins out of 9. Oh, the excuses…oh, the hypocrisy!

Falcon one agree with you. QB is least of Falcon’s problems. Why Jacksonville release Byron is because Mr. Leftwich is not a team player so he can’t lead not what Falcons need at this stage of the game.

Falcons need everything including receivers that can run routes, catch the ball and hold on to it. Need offensive line that block so Dunn and Norwood can run, No blocking no running yards, don’t care if you Franco Harris and the “bus”. Defense has played decent so get couple more shold shore it up.

Drafting a QB at high rounds would be a waste too much money wasted on one player without players to support. Tried it once already, see where it got us.

Unbiased blogger, you are full of it. MV7 is in jail and even if he gets off with little jail time, there is state charges pending against him in VA and possibly in SC. So pull your head out of your ar$e, your idol ain’t coming back anytime soon. NFL is not going to take him back for simple reason, most sponsors would not want to associate with any team having Vick. You may not agree with PETA and dislike everyone else, but the reality is NFL is business and no legitimate business is going to do business with anyone that creates negative publicity for them.

By the time your hero gets all the state charges dropped against him, it will be few years. Guess what, he can’t plead not guilty on state charges after pleading guilty to federal charges. This reality and you don’t have to like it, agree with it, no one cares.

Stop with your bogus name and BS.

Last night’s game was one of the worst officiated games I ever saw. It was just like the Dallas game last year. The officials cost us that game. The roughing the kicker call was bs, there were a few delay of game peanalties not called on the Colts, a couple jersey tuggings not called, and one pass Gonzalez caught where his foot was on the out of bounds line. The referees really need to get in the game. The Falcons might have won if the referees made the right calls for once!!!! They need to use more replays in this league!!!!

All you people focused on the QB’s miss the big picture. The Colts had better players and were better coached. It doesn’t matter who plays QB because the problems run much deeper. This team has been going downhill for several years and even the sainted MV7 was a sub-500 QB the past two years. He could have played QB last night and the Falcons still would have lost. It only shows how very far the Falcons are from being a contender. As bad as the Falcons played against Tampa, this one was more discouraging.

Well, I see the racists are out in full force, condemning Bird Babe. You people are a joke! harrington played well. He put up thirteen points in the game and that’s thireen more than Ham Sammich put up last week. Harrington doesn’t play on defense and, it’s apparent, no one else does either. There were numerous drops of passes and Harrington doesn’t catch passes, he throws them. The coach, P-U-trino, threw a challenge flag one play too late after a Colts’ receiver caught a pass out-of- bounds and the play ruled good. harrington doesn’t coach the team and, apparently, no one else does either. Harrington is not to blame for the loss. The fault lies with P-U-trino and the miserable play calling and the lack of a defense. Joey is much better than the country Ham Sammich and he proves it every game. Sammich was unavailable last night due to a bruised tailbone. i don’t doubt it the way Tampa Bay kept applying their boots to his buffalo butt!

Guess what - Joey Harrington is no Michael Vick (thank God.) He has handled all this adversity with class, but you Con-Vick jock sniffers wouldn’t know class if it bit you in the butt. Vick will NEVER play in Atlanta again. Maybe he can play in Buffalo and you can move up there with him - Delta is ready when you are. If you don’t want to support the Falcons without him, that is your choice, but quit whining like sissies about it. Whether the Falcons “supported” Vick or not, he pled guilty and nobody in the Falcons organization could change that. He brought all this garbage on himself for his stupid behavior, and brought his team down in the process. He is a selfish moron who may have thrown his whole future away for nothing. If you can’t find a better “hero” than Con-Vick, you need help.

Suzan, amazing how you can’t make an argument for Joey “Never-Had-A-Winning-Season” Harrington w/out inserting Leftwich. “Harrington played well?” Wow…LOL…I guess I couldn’t see past the 45.8 passer rating!!!! You obviously don’t know football. First of all, he didn’t put up 13 points, he was responsible for 6…versus 2 picks by the way. THERE WERE DROPPED PASSES LAST WEEK…but, as usual, it’s an excuse for Joey’s 45.8-rated performance…oh yeah, & PETRINO WAS THE COACH LAST WEEK. What your “ideal” QB has proven every game is that he’s the same inconsistent QB that was run out of Detroit & Miami. By the way, Leftwich was out BECAUSE Tampa Bay “kept applying their boots to his buffalo butt” VIA THE INVISIBLE O-LINE…oh yeah, that’s an EXCUSE reserved for Joey “3-&-6-as-the-starter-this-year” Harrington!!!

Please allow me to shed a different light on this very volatile topic of Atlanta Falcons football. The facts remain as followed:

Harrington is a backup QB, nothing more. Leftwich is injury prone, mechanically inclined(wind up motion), and immobile(not good for this team). Redman has not played football(in an actual NFL game) in 4 years(and if we look at the stats he accumulated with Baltimore, you can see why). This team has a plethora of issues that start from top to bottom, however, resolutions are available. Scenarios and general reasoning can’t always be used to understand why players, coaches, and general managers perform better or worse in different predicaments(think about that for a minute).

I am an African American NFL fan who sees exactly what is going on here, which is unfortunate. Please acknowledge that racism goes both ways, so I will not condone any of the behavior that is being displayed on this blog. This team and city seems to be at constant odds over the Vick situation, but more so racially. I still don’t understand why it has to be this way. My brother is a cop and soldier, who believes Vick deserves another chance, as do I, but not for football, for hisself. The word is redemption. This is from a man who serves his country in more ways than any of us will ever know. When I think of all the soldiers who have fought diligently and died in a war that I still cannot comprehend, it sincerely confuses me. What are we really arguing about? Injustices happen everyday from many who will never admit to any wrongdoing. I’m ashamed, not just as an NFL fan, but as an American. God help us, because we’ve still have a long way to go, but much longer than I could have ever anticipated.

The fact is that Joey did play well. Certainly, he played better than Ham Sammich is capable of. Ham has started two games, but has lost three. Three wins is an excellent number when one realizes the coach is utterly inept and disingenuous. He points his nasty finger of blame at others when it is he who is guilty of having not a clue as to how the professional game is played. As for Vick, he’s going to prison for three years or more. He, also, will receive a suspension fromn the NFL after he is released from prison. There’s also a good chance he will get additional prison time from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Don’t look for him until at least 2012. All Mr. Blank wants from him is his twenty-two million dollars back. Vick is ruined, in every way, and he won’t play in the NFL again. Too bad! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ah-I’m laughing out loud. Besides, Joey Harrington had more touchdown passes, than Vick, coming into this season anyhow. Joey harrington is a much better quarterback than Vick ever was!
