Defense gets win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The defense was awesome today. They gave up one touchdown in the first quarter and a lot of field goals, but they held tough. Lawyer Milloy had that big play on third down to limit the 49ers to the field goal and protect the lead late. A lot of people get on Keith Brooking, but he had the big sack just before D. Hall got the pick. They were all over Alex Smith.
The offense should have scored more points on all the turnovers, but a win is a win. Nice to finally see Warrick get a 100 yards on the ground.
I liked how the Falcons responded in the first half after the touchdown by the 49ers. They didn’t panic and scored two touchdowns in the red zone.
Hope this will help with the confidence. I know the 49ers aren’t a good team and the offense didn’t look great, but a win can do wonders for the Falcons’ confidence.
Still pretty pathetic for Falcons’ fans to not be able to watch their team on TV. You would have thought the Falcons and Blank would have figured out a way to get rid of 3,000 tickets. It’s a little embarrassing.
Way to go Falcons! Let’s go for two in a row next week against the Panthers.

Not many, but the Dome hasn’t been close to full for most games this season. There are always too many fans from the visiting team.

Well…..fan apathy…a mainstay of Falcons history has returned. THis team could win out the rest of the season and you still won’t get a full Dome…..and you can have the draft picks #1, #2 and #3….and you still wont get a full Dome. Its not hard to understand…Atlanta is just not the type of city that feels compelled to support a sports team just because they win or just because they’re HERE. Its a shame that its come to this for that little point to be made clearer…but I still see too many who stupidly think that the mantra “winning cures everything” applies to this city…it doesn’t.

Atlanta fans WILL support a consistent winner! The Braves are an example. When management does not give a damn (Falcons, Hawks) then fans lose interest. The Thrashers are making an effort to build solid fan base. I have NO IDEA what Hawks are doing. Falcons have given up this season. Are fans expected to support teams which have already quit? I THINK NOT!

Okay, first of all SorryDogs, that was a sorry commit. A comment like that makes me think that you’re like that insensitive child watching two challenged children fight with each other, pointing and laughing hoping one of them gets hurt. Really, bad analogy.
As for the Falcons, they won, everything else is negotiable. Seriously though, is there anyone left that thinks this team didn’t need Michael Vick?

Bunch of negative jerks. A win is a win. Your bad attitudes are why you are a bunch of losers. I was at the game and there was a decent crowd. Not many opposing fans at all, I don’t where Bird Brain came up that junk. Hats off to Zimmer and the defense, they won the game for us. Harrington sucks but he’s all we have now. Why don’t you losers buy a ticket and quit your be-otchin and moaning, let me remind ya’ll that your fallen idol QB is going to prison next month, he is the real loser. Way to go Falcons!

RA,
The answer to your question is no. After years of bashing this young man and building up the flunky on the sideline as the hero, Atlanta has not accepted the obvious; Vick was the team. Atlanta has traditionally refused to accept reality on certain issues. It was almost as if they continued to believe the earth is flat. That rhetoric played well for years in places like Alpharetta. But those same #7 haters are no where to be found. They weren’t even football fans. They merely claim to know how leaders should look.

midnite, A decent crowd?? The guys on 790am are clowning the crowd right now. There was NO traffic. The same 30,000 that went to Fulton County Stadium are the ones going now….unfortunately the Georgia Dome seats 70,000…..so now that the “vick fans” are gone….cold hard reality has set in that those fans afforded you a sell-out…it afforded you some national prominence….it afforded you no TV blackouts since 12/23/2001…and 8 games into the post-Vick era and blackouts have already commenced?? LOLOL!!!!

Serious question: Why didn’t PeTA or some other animal group help out Aurthur Blank and buy those tickets? Why didn’t they scratch his back like he scratched theirs? He is gonna learn, he bought the team during the Vick years, apparently, he didn’t pay attention during the NORMAL FALCONS years and I predict, A.V. (After Vick) is gonna be far worse than B.V. (Before Vick)

From the BIG mouth of DeA++hole Hall: “…look(ing) down our schedule, we(?) feel like we can win every one of them(?). Obviously, the Thanksgiving Day one (vs. Indianapolis) is going to be a little bit tougher than the others (you think?), but we feel like we can definitely go out there and compete with everybody left on our (schedule). What is HE smoking? A slim home win over an injury-depleted team which tanked it. Colt Peyton Manning will throw as many TD passes against the porous Falcon secondary as he wants to! I always knew DH was a talentless thug. I never knew he was a complete ignoramus, too! Live and learn.

I don’t know where the fans are, we have the same mark 2-6 for the first eight games of this year, as we did for the last eight games of the last 2 seasons and that was with Vick. I don’t care if you are white or black he flipped us off and admittedly quit on us during a game. Why does anyone wish we had him back. I’m ready to have a team in this town, not a bunch of self centered superstars who are just worried about going to Hawaii for a pointless game.

Yes the Falcons were a one man show. Why can’t you people see that was the problem? You don’t win championships with a one man show. Who cares how many MNF’s and crappy fans you get when can’t make it to the big game? He ate up all of our money and we couldn’t afford to get the kind of support that Dan Reeves got back in ‘98. There was always a chance of a great play or an unexpected win, but there was NEVER a chance of a championship the way the team was put together during Vick’s time here. Maybe Petrino can put together a real team now. Blackouts suck, but they mean I can see the game in person if I want to. You get what you pay for Mr. Blanks. How much did you spend on Vick again?

Falcons are INDIVIDUALS! It is Peyton Manning AND the Indy Colts. Tom Brady AND the NE Pats. It is DeA++hole Hall, Algae Crumpledupagain, Joey Hopelesslylostagain, Joe Blow My Own Horn, Keith I Was Once A Pro Bowler Brooking plus a host of other disposable egomaniacs. It is about THEM - NOT THE TEAM! I like Dunn. He is a nice guy. But Norwood is the more talented runner. I am so sick of seeing Dunn run blindly up the middle for a yard that I want to hang Petrino. NOT IN EFFIGY! Did Redman die? He was at one point the backup QB. He was shafted for Leftover. I would much rather see him than Harrington! Redman is an unknown commodity. I already know too damn well what clueless Harrington is (more aptly, is not) capable of! I do not give a rat’s A++ if he completes 90 percent of his passes. Only TDs and wins matter at this level! FGs do not cut it even though the Falcons are undeservedly blessed with the finest placekicker on the planet.

The disappointing feeling I began having after 2003 was that our team was built around an exceptional athlete who was not a great leader. It was a catch 22 because he was so exciting but just not grasping the game at the elevated level required by the NFL. He could no longer just outrun and outsling everybody like he almost did to FSU in 1999. Yet we made him our franchise player and were stuck with poor leadership because he sold tickets. It may be a blessing in disguise to have this happen now so we can rebuild our hapless team around a true leader. Better than going 7-9 year after year hoping for something that was not going to occur.

Hire hungry athletes that have a burning desire to win! Stock the team with men who would rather drink acid than lose. Utilize hard guys who do not take losing lightly. Play men who live-and-breathe the game itself. Athletes who take pride in their work. Only two present Falcons fit these categories. Cut the rest. Execute the rest. Put the rest in a home somewhere for untalented athletes. Nobody cares! Recruit from the taxi squad. The streets. Anywhere that winners thrive. Could it possibly be any worse? MERRY CHRISTMAS!

A win is a win—-even against the depleted 49ers. The playcalling was once again very questionable. Those 1st down runs that garner maybe 2 yards continue to confound me. It’s not the fact that the plays are not successful for the most part but the fact that they are so PREDICTABLE. Zimmer called a good game on the defensive side. Leftwich needs to get back ASAP—-Harrington is just not a good quarterback. It’s frustrating to have a quarterback who can’t throw downfield!!!

I’m glad to see the Falcons pull out a win. Yes, the 49ers are an awful team missing their best player, but when you are an awful team yourself, a victory over another awful team is something to be proud of. Nice to see Warrick Dunn dust himself off and show us why he gets the majority of the carries (of course it helps that Jerious Norwood got injured). Unfortunately, this win does more to hurt the team’s draft chances than it does to benefit them this season.

Aussie Bird, your observations are completely on point about #7 not being able to outrun and outsling other teams in the NFL. However this is not a problem only for #7, but for nearly every scrambling QB to enter the league. Donovan McNabb took six years to post a completion percentage over 60%. Steve Young took five years to top 54% completions. Vince Young is the latest in the line of successful scrambling college QBs to struggle as a passer in his first few years in the NFL.
The problem traces back to college coaches, who would rather see their scrambling QBs win games with their raw athleticism than teach them how to read defenses and throw from the pocket, resulting in a much steeper learning curve in the NFL. Watch any talented dual-threat QB in college, and you will notice two things: #1, it will take their coaches much longer to allow them to run an offense full time, and #2, they will be encouraged to scramble on almost every occasion. Who is more likely to make an immediate impact in the NFL: someone like Brian Brohm or Matt Ryan who has spent three years starting in a traditional pocket-passing offense in college, or someone like Dennis Dixon who has spent less time as a starter, and even that in a hybrid system that emphasizes scrambling? Dixon clearly has the physical ability to be a great NFL player, but I can promise you he is going to take longer to become a reliable NFL passer than Brohm or Ryan. That’s not because he thinks he can win the game on his own — it’s 100% because of coaching. Unfortunately, between his injuries, multiple coordinators, and now his legal problems, we never really got a chance to see how good of a passer Vick could have become if he was given the time to overcome the learning curve that scrambling QBs face.

A win is a win; I hope team leadership does not give it any more time than that. To declare that the team turned a corner yesterday would be laughable. Harrington completed his routine “checkdown” passes yesterday ONLY because the 49ers have no pass rush. It was good to see Abraham active and on the ball; but don’t mistake that performance as standard; let’s revisit his effectiveness after the Bucs, Carolina, Colts, Saints, and Seattle games; I give you the others.
Comments about Vick are now a waste of time as he moves closer to numbers not in a playbook but on the back of his inmate shirt; he will disappear in a sea of other lost souls who have become meaningless.
Looking ahead to the draft, watch the pattern continue; all eggs in one basket: the greatest QB who ever lived.. with no attention to the o-line. Or, signing 20+ year vets with medical histories longer than the Mississippi river.
The beat goes on as this team acts to solidify ite legacy: the only NFL team to NEVER have had two back to back winning seasons.
Long term solution: Sale and relocation.
End.

As a season ticket holder since Blank took over, I have felt the last few years have been very disappointing ones for everyone associated with the Falcons - the fans, the players, the coaches. Everything that happens inside the Dome is affected - there are no good freebies on game day, the halftime shows are lackluster, the live band disappeared, the DJ vanished. Now we can’t even fill up the stadium with supporters. If the season continues on this path, we will see more injuries to our players, more mouthing off, and substantially more ugliness on and off the field. Frankly, I’m not willing to support that type of organization.
