Big hole in the middle
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The youth movement has begun. Cutting Grady Jackson is puzzling to me. No, he wasn’t having a great season, be he was still one of the leading tacklers on the team. To be honest, I was surprised he was still on the team after suing them in the offseason.
Teams had little trouble finding holes with the big guy in the middle, so it will be interesting to see how the Falcons fill that gap he’s leaving behind.
The Falcons have been impressed with the rookie Lewis and sounds like he will be the starter. I’m all for change. Can’t hurt.
Go Falcons!

Bobby Petrino is passive agressively screwing up the Falcons, because he plans to be elsewhere next year.
He is the modern day Les Steckel. The question is would Dan Reeves consider being the modern day Bud Grant to stabilize a bad situation and start the rebuilding for a younger successor?

Have you noticed that when AJC.com has breaking news about the Falcons (Vick, Leftwich surgery, etc.) That it usually begins with … “ESPN’s Chris Mortenson is reporting,” or if not Mort, then Len Pasquarelli. There was a time not so long ago when the AJC’s beat writers were the best in the country. Not anymore. Not even close.

Just when you thought the Falcons front office couldn’t be more under-handed…they raise the bar.
Oh well, here’s hoping this franchise has a losing season, horrible morale, and complete national irrelevance for another 20 years…that is, unless Mark Cuban buys it or the team leaves the city.

There’s a reason he was cut - the same reason he’s 350 lbs. — HE’S LAZY.
No biggie - but maybe we should’ve moved him to Offensive Tackle.

This sounds exactly like what the Hawks do every year. Tanking the season so they can get a higher pick.
Actually, by the time Petrino is done, this team is going to be just like the Hawks. Young and talented, but lacking the heart and leadership to win.
Good luck to you Grady. See you when the next team picks you up and you come back to the dome to kick our butts.

I’m glad that they cut him. Instead of clogging the hole like he was being told to do, he freelanced too much, which hindered our linebackers’ ability make plays. Players who don’t buy into the scheme shouldn’t be kept around, PERIOD.

OK, Grady Jackson SUED the Falcons during the offseason. I can assume this probably did not allow for a peaceful employer-employee relationship.
None of us know what Grady was like in the locker room. I would think that the word “divisive” could be used to describe someone who sues his employer, then wants to stay (get paid). Give me a freaking break, people.

Wait a second. YOU HAVE TO BE SERIOUS>>>>We cut the big tackle??? I am outraged with this. Are we going to cut Keith Brooking? He tackles Sanders on 3rd down and R Busch scored. WOW!!!!
WHY IS THE HEADLINE D. HALL throws a tantrum? What is the purpose??? Trying to throw him under the bus???
I am tired of the year and we have been official CURSED!!!!!!WHy I don;t know but we have..

So all the white people who don’t like Vick are “haters.” I assume the same tag can be applied to all the black people who don’t like Brooking.

Waive the whole damn team and start from scratch, like an expansion team. This is a laughingstock. How come Artie has not come out publicly and apologized for this embarassment. Looks like the egg is on his face. Now nobody wants to come here. D.Hall, Crump et al are miserable. I think you have to have a coach like Dan Reeves that the players respect and love but also strict enough that the players behave and act respectfully. Mora was too lovie dovie and now Petrino thinks he is Bill Parcells that no one wants to play for. I am rooting for the Colts from now on. I love Tony Dungy (reminds me a lot of Coach Richt at Georgia).
Your franchise is finished Artie. Might as well sell it to the Atlanta Spirit.

As far as I’m concerned, MeAngelo can be the next to go. He seems to think we’re paying him by the word..let some other team over pay for his big, fat, me-first mouth next year.
Poor Grady..never met a triple stack he didn’t like. I cringed a bit everytime he waddled those 350 (closer to 400)lbs onto the feild. He was without a doubt the most un-conditioned athlete I’ve ever seen. I heard he was cut because he ate coaches clipboard..or maybe it was his desk. Quick, somebody call Chris Mortenson!!
Petrino no doubt didn’t want to be caught in the blast feild when the Gurgitator’s heart explodes. Jackson should seriously seek help, the team tried to tell him he was a walking time-bomb last year so he sued them. Talk about not taking constructive criticism well.
Oh well, best of luck big man, but seriously…dial 1-800-597-JENNY, if Kirstie can do it, so can you!!

please, please stop blogging. You’re not stupid but it doesn’t seem as if you put thought into these.
Grady had to sign a new contract this season. He sued because he blamed the Falcons for giving teams his private medical report and blamed that on not getting more offers.
If they were so upset then they didn’t have to sign him. Petrino could have drafted his DT from Louisville. The Saints had two big runs up the middle last week both the result of Anderson not holding his lane. Those were cutback runs by Bush.
You guys don’t remember what it was like here before Grady. Back to back games Green Bay and Cleveland both near the bottom of the league in rushing gashed us for 200+ yards. If Grady was such a problem he didn’t just become one and the team obviously didn’t make the position a priority in the draft (Lewis drafted in the later rounds) or Free Agency.
Wanna see Grady really play? Wait until he matches up against Todd McClure.

It’s not like the Falcons cut a stud Pro Bowler. They cut Grady Jackson people. Yawn. What’s the big deal? Was Grady helping them win games? He can’t even play every down because he’s not in shape. As for Hall, who cares what that pitiful human being has to say anymore. His act got old a long long time ago.

When your job is to stop the run and the team isn’t stopping the run, don’t you think that counts against him? Of course he led the team in tackles, teams ran inside the tackles all the time, because Coleman was hurt and Grady wasn’t playing well.
He wasn’t going to play for us next year anyway and he wasn’t right for the system.

I’ve been a Falcons fan for 40 years. I gave up on our team ever becoming some kind of dynasty a long time ago until just recently. The team is in bad shape with only a few players that really know what it is to be a part of something. I think the coach has the right idea. He is cutting out the problems and I hope that D Hall is next. I think you will see some major changes over the next few years. This coach knows what it takes to win and he will when he gets his players.
I liked watching Vick and I hate it that he had to be a part of something that has shed such an ugly light on our team and city, but it was always a mistake to pin the hopes of our success to mostly one guy. Petrino will reshape this team and make us contenders. Be patient.

It’s disappointing seeing this club continue to spiral down hill out of control. Grady may have needed to be cut but the timing of it was completely bad especially since Grady was leading defensive lineman in tackles so he was producing. Petrino may be a good offensive mind but he has lost his locker room. This team will get the first pick next year which seems to be the plan anyway. Now, let’s see how many veterans can the Falcons sign after they see how the current group of veterans are being cut at will or seeing their playing time diminish. There may be no answer to help this club right now but I do have time to burn all my falcon equipment before the end of the season!!!!!!

So Booby Pee thinks he can win in the NFL with a team full of rookies. No veteran in his right mind will want to come here. This ain’t college and he ain’t Bill Parcells. And for once I’d like to see this Bird Chic comment on Brooking. He is playing worse than Grady was. Why no comments on him? Let me guess. He’s taller than Grady.

List of NFL records and milestones In 2006, Vick became the only quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards during the regular season. In 2006, Vick set the NFL record for most yards per carry in a season, at 8.4. When Vick and RB Jerious Norwood both ran for over 100 yards in Week 4 of the 2006 season, the Falcons became the only NFL team to ever record two games in a franchise’s history where both the quarterback and a running back on the same team surpassed the 100-yard mark in the same game. (Vick and Warrick Dunn both eclipsed 100 yards in Week 2 of the same season.) Vick (1,039 yards) and Dunn (1,140) became the first QB/RB tandem in NFL history to each go over the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the same season. They also became the fourth set of teammates in league history to each have 1,000 or more yards. The last set of teammates to accomplish the feat were Cleveland RBs Kevin Mack (1,104 yards) and Earnest Byner (1,002) in 1985. Earned his second consecutive and third overall Pro Bowl nod in 2005 as he passed for 2,412 yards and 16 touchdowns in addition to leading all NFL quarterbacks with 597 rushing yards and six scores. Named to the second Pro Bowl of his career after leading the Falcons to their third division title in team history and breaking numerous NFL and team records in 2004. Set an NFL postseason record for a quarterback with 119 rushing yards in the 2004 NFC Divisional Playoff win against the Rams. Became the first quarterback to ever throw for more than 250 yards and rush for over 100 yards in the same game at the Broncos (October 31, 2004). Named to the 2002 Pro Bowl, becoming the seventh quarterback to be voted to the NFL All-Star game in his first year as a starter since 1970, joining Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins (1983), Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers (1992), Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams (1999), Daunte Culpepper of the Minnesota Vikings (2000), Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles (2000), and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots (2001). This group would later include Marc Bulger of the St. Louis Rams (2003), Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (2006), and Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys (2006). Top overall NFL draft choice in 2001 after a celebrated college career at Virginia Tech. Was the fourth Falcons #1 overall pick in club history (Tommy Nobis in 1966, Steve Bartkowski in 1975, Aundray Bruce in 1988) YOU CAN POST AND HATE AND SAY WHATEVER YOU EVIL PEOPLE WANT ABOUT MICHAEL VICK, YOUR WORDS MEAN NOTHING, YOUR HATE MEANS NOTHING, MOST OF YOU ARE NOT FOOTBALL FANS OR FALCON FANS, JUST SICK PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOTHING AND WILL NEVER HAVE ANYTHING BUT HATE IN YOUR HEART. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER MICHAEL VICK AND NO ONE CAN REPLACE HIM ESPECIALLY IN ATLANTA. I AM SO GLAD THAT HE REALIZES IF HE GETS TO PLAY AGAIN ITS TIME TO MOVE ON TO BETTER THINGS. HATE NOW BECAUSE YOUR HATRED IS ONLY GOING TO GROW WHEN HE ACCOMPLISHES HIS GOALS AS A MAN, FATHER AND A QUATERBACK SOMEWHERE ELSE. YOU GO MICHAEL VICK. LET THE HATEERS DIE INSIDE WITH THE HATE YOU JUST KEEP ON LIVING BABY.

I think anyone can see why it might have made football sense to cut Grady. He needed a blow after just a few plays. He was quite light on his feet, and pretty quick for his size, but he’s tremendously out-of-shape, having never lost any of the weight he was supposed to lose when we signed him. Lack of conditioning remained a critical factor with him. The Falcons now have a roster spot open—-and they can materially improve the team with it. Finally, Trey Lewis, who is not small (6’3” 320 lbs.) has done a good job. I see very little downside on this one for the Birds. And a possible good gain with a new player added. Finally, I agree with those who want the Falcons to trade D-Hall. He’s just an average cover corner (remember, just for one example of many, what Chad Johnson did to him in pre-season?), he can’t control his emotions, and he’s a negative force on the team. Whatever he’s worth in the market, it would be a plus for the team to get rid of him. They could probably get a first-round pick—-Oakland would be a good fit for him. The team is truly doomed this year, and some of the oldsters are under-performing, living off their reputations. They probably need to go at the end of the season. In this group I include Brooking and Crocker and Weiner. My only real beef with Petrino is: where the hell is this best-paid-in-the-league fullback you signed? He’s been invisible! Did you mess-up big-time on your estimation of his ability? What’s the deal? (I suspect we’ll never know.)

Great post Hope! I agree with you BiasedBlogger. Facts dont lie. Try these on for size: Mike Vick’s career QB rating is 75.7. Yes, I said 75.7 Mike Vick’s career completion % is 53.8. Yep. How about this one: career yds per game passing 155. I had to double check that one. Its mind boggling. Most important stat: last two seasons as QB of Falcons - 7-9 and 8-8. Before we found out he was electricuting dogs the national media had the Falcons going 7-9 again. You seee BiasedBlogger there is only one group of people in this country who consider Vick to be a great QB. This group resides in Atlanta. I bet you know what they all have in common. I was wondering why Grady didn’t get cut last year. Look at film from the last few games and you’ll see him out of position all the time while teams are running all over us. Notice how quiet Brookings is? At least he’s smart enough to keep quiet. He ought to be gone after this year too. And D Hall talks a lot for someone who is continually burnt every week. MIKE, if racism was a disease you’d be infected to the bone. In your last post you stated, “THE ATLANTA NEGROES EMBARRASS THE ENTIRE CITY”. Let’s talk about a national and international embarrassment that should concern us all, especially you. White people, especially White men, comprise over 90% of all serial rapists, murders and bombers(100%). The overwhelming majority of child molesters, internet predators, people committing beastiality(sex with animals), incest and mass murderers are white men. The overwhelming majority of teens and preteens that commit and/or plot to commit mass murder are white. The same holds true for children/parents that kill each other. The majority of priests and ministers that commit crimes against children are also white. Virtually all documented cases of cannibalism in this country involves Whites. And despite propaganda to the contrary, there are more White wellfare recipients than all other groups combined.
These facts aren’t indicative of all or even most Whites, but it’s still an embarrassing issue and should be a major concern, don’t you think. It should certainly be far more of an issue and concern than your so called Atlanta Negroes aledgedly embarrassing themselves by supporting MVick.

SHELL & JD, no one player or individual is responsible for the past failures and/or successes of the Falcons. There might be one player that is more responsible than another, but not solely responsible. If you use common sense instead of personal issues, you’d understand other factors we responsible for the Falcons past failues under Mora. Otherwise, how do you explain the trememdous success of the 04 team and the trememdous failure of the 05 team using virtually the same players, except for the addition of the 05 draft picks and FA’s.
The players and coaches didn’t get any worse in 05, but DEF’s got better at defending what we were doing. The coaching staff simply couldn’t, or wouldn’t, make the necessary adjustments to compensate for the DEF adjustments. They refused fixing, or try to fix, what was wrong, like (1)employing more screens (2) more passes to our RB’s (3)more slants and short outs routes (4)pass more on 1st and 2nd downs (5)allow audibles (6)use the FB and employ more TE’s, expecially on short yardage situations. Instead they became even more predictable and conservative by retreated more and more to the run. Only an absolute fool and/or complete idiot would hold any one player responsible for the Falcons last 3yrs.

Ken, I donr point blame at #7 for the pat failures of the birds. I’m simply saying that I dont think Vick is a very good QB. The majority opinion among the prognosticators is that Vick is a superlative athlete, capable of great bursts of athleticism but not a great QB. This opinion seems to trouble you. I can only assume that you are a member of the demographic that resides in Atlanta who thinks that Vick is a superstar. Trust me, the rest of the nation knows who that demographic is. The ESPN town meeting was a perfect example

JD, what I care about you and your opinions can be put in a gnat’s A$$ and it would still look like a BB in a box car. Also, when you ASSUME you make and A$$ of U and ME, with the emphasis on U.
First, I didn’t reference MVick either directly of indirectly. The point I made was no single player, whether it be PManning, TBrady, JHarrington, etc, is wholely responsible for a team winning or losing. Secondly, whether MVick was a good QB or not is irrelevent. Under the circumstances, he was a good QB for the Falcons. He accomplished more in his 4yrs as a starter, as far as winning seasons, playoff wins and conference championships are concerned, than any other QB in Falcons history. Yes, he could have possibly accomplished more if he’d been a better passer, but under the circumstances he wasn’t. But all of this means absolutely nothing, because he is no longer in the NFL. Yet, he still seems to be in your mind, and you are still obcessed with what others possibly think of him as a QB. I guarantee your reasons have little, if anything, to do with football. WHY DON’T YOU GET A LIFE AND TRY TO FOCUS ON FOOTBALL ISSUES OTHER THAN MVICK. HE’S GONE AND IS NO LONGER AN ISSUE TO INTELLIGENT FALCON FANS, JUST CLOWNS LIKE YOU WITH PERSONAL ISSUES.

Post all the Vick facts you want. The Fact is this team quit in the second half of the last TWO seasons. Vick, Grady, Dunn, Brooking and all the “veterans” were in part responsible for this. Getting rid of the coach and veterans is a good start to turning this program around. Granted, I’d have rather seen Dunn, Crumpler, D Hall, or Brook go than Grady.

Why dont you come on up out the trailer park and bring your wife/cousin with you, but make sure you scrub her down real good in a flea and tick bath first, and I will show you how long my DEMOGRAPHIC is. Oh yeh! Bring that little racist hill billy jd with you so he can take notes on how us ATLANTA NEGROES put it down. Just then his girl will return his calls and stop calling me. Once you GO BLACK you never GO BACK. We will see who gets traded off the team then. FACTS DON’T LIE

This is all rediculous overkill.
Ask yourself this question…..
What would the Falcons record be right now if they had just an avg OL?
4-3….possibly even 5-2…thats exactly what it would be.
Go back and look at the games they lost. It was because of the OL. The Defense did fine and was not the problem.
The best thing that this organization could do would be to keep everything the same except replace 4 of the starting 5 O lineman in this Aprils draft and offseason. Keep Blaylock because he has a lot of upshot.
If McKay does not realize this….then he needs to go!

This is a true story. My 11 year old nephew axed his father, “Dad why are the black kids always the dumbest in the class?”. Can anyone tell me why that is?

KrisG, The AJC is allowing all of these racist and ignorant comments because they want it to seem like a lot of people are responding to the actual blog…as you can see, they’re about to get about 10 comments per blog now that their favorite whipping boy is gone and the Falcons are exactly what we thought they were….and we’re back to TV blackouts (damn that sure didn’t take long)…so now the AJC realizes…oh damn, no Vick, there is minimal interest. So they allow the racists to come on here and vent. THis isn’t the AJC being irresonsible, no, this is there INTENT.
