Wasn’t Harrington’s fault

What a bummer. I expected more out of the Falcons than this.

The offensive line was atrocious and so was the run defense.

This wasn’t Harrington’s fault. Sure he threw two INTs, but the second one was Jenkins’ fault. He hit nine different receivers for 199 yards. He needs more support.

Of course the offense couldn’t get anything going downfield. We need to be able to go deep and have guys make plays.

Harrington isn’t a great QB, but he’s serviceable if given some time. Look at the preseason.

The good news is that it’s only one game. Plenty of time to get things turned around.

Stay on the bandwagon - that is if you didn’t leave when you found out Vick was out.

Yeah i bet we would have won if Vick had started. Last year if Vick had a start like this you would have blamed it all on Vick.

Both lines were AWFUL, special teams were non-existent, WRs continue to fulfill reputation as NFL’s worst.

Does anybody remember the last time an ATL WR got more than 2-3 YAC?? It hasn’t happened since the 90s. Absolutely DREADFUL.

Then JANKins hands them the nail in the coffin. Joey didn’t play great, but he played well enough to give us a chance—he managed the game and was for the most part pretty efficient. Nobody else did anything.

I’m not sure on what grounds you’re basing this optimism here, but I’m not drinking a drop of that Kool-Aid. I knew we’d suck with or w/o Vick, just as we did the majority of the time he was here.

3-13, #1 or #2 overall pick in 2008.

So finally the true problems with this team will start being highlighted, No depth, No Oline, and the WR still Suck.

the run defense wss not that bad. overall the defense only gave up 10 points and 7 of those were on a fluke play. Robinson looked good. Would like to see more of norwood and the fullback on short yardage.

This wasn’t Harrington’s fault those are better passing numbers than Vick puts up 90% of the time…the lines were terrible and I’m counting down the games until Dunn is replaced by Norwood, he did absolutely nothing in this game

i disagree,i believe with vick this offense would have been better, and this isnt taking up for vick. look whats happening in the colleges. everybody is going to spread offensives. that leaves running routes for the quarterback. look at how oregon beat michigan yesterday. i saw plenty of running routes that harrington could have taken advantage of but didnt.

Line up Harrington apologists! Two INT for touchdowns? Totally and completely unacceptable. No lame++ excuses! How many to guys with Birds on helmets. Zero. Zilch. Not one. Michigan garbage surfaces in South. Send Harrington back to Michigan, Florida or to wherever he came from! Services not required in Georgia Dome! Falcon defense has enough problems preventing points. Especially with throwaway loser Brooking calling shots. Anyone preferable. Team quit in Minnesota. Only unsavory glumpse of things to come. No pride. No dignity. No hope!

Warrick Dunn ?? Gimme a break. Petrino has to have time to get his own guys in there. Jenkins…. sucks. Say goodbye to a bunch of these losers after this season. I say we go 6-10 ‘cause I’m a Falcons fool and I believe in coach Petrino. Did anyone else think Harrington looked like a slow *ss stiff out there ? He has all the mobility of Jeff George. Don’t panic…. Ha! We knew this was athrow away season going in. Bummer. We self destructed at the end of the game. Sad but true. Vick? Well, we sucked with him also. Rats.

Bird Babe, Are your a bird brain? I saw Joey stand in the pocket 8 seconds before he got sacked. That is more than long enough to throw the ball. Offensive line looked great. Joey looked like a well spoken wanna be QB.

the only problem with harrington is he holds the ball too long. Hopefully they will work on this. However in all probablity atlanta will have a top 5 pick in the draft.

Not a very good start - but I’ll hang in there. At Least if we stink it up we’ll have a great draft choice!!! I knew this was gonna take some time anyway - petrino going to want to get his guys in there and that will take more than 1 offseason.

this headline is hilarious…now that harrington is in it’s not his fault we lost…like he!! it isn’t..what game were you people watching..hey @ least he got his 65% completions IN A LOSING EFFORT..if Vick was in with that performance this blog would have DRILLED him kind of like the modern day lynching that’s happening to him now..Not saying he doesn’t deserve to do a little time..but he doesn’t deserve the level of scrutiny and hypocrisy being thrown his way as if he hung Jesus on the cross himself..

I have a question, Birdbabe what game were you watching? Because the Falcons game was an absolute disgrace. Joey Harrington is a bum always has been, always will be. Holds on to the ball to long, no movement in the pocket, but since he’s not Michael Vick you’ll use every excuse in the book. This isn’t the preseason, so I hope all you people who wanted Vick gone are happy, because right Atlanta football ain’t about nothing right now.

If Norwood is a playmaker, he must touch the ball more than he touched it today.

Funny, two of the Falcons most significant final decisions came into play in this game. Prater missed a FG and Adam Jennings fielded a punt inside the 10 yardline. Hope it gets better next week, the offense played conservative, I thought this was supposed to be an attacking offense? I didn’t see it today.

I am still so angry that I have to clarify my last post. The Falcons were PRIMED for a big win. The defense WAS fired up. Harrington drained the life out of the team with the INT for a TD! That cannot be argued or refuted. His second INT was only the final nail in the coffin. Defense stood proud except for major breakdown on one play. Jackass DeA++hole Hall should have made tackle but tanked on play. Gutless garbage! Decent quarterbacks avoid sacks. Like the ole’ toss Viking quarterback made to save yards. Harrington not smart. Not fast. Not NFL caliber qb! Truth is truth! Jettison the trash now. Cut or execute Harrington and Hall! Potential present. Do not choke it out by playing quitters! Oh, by the by, get a dependable field goal kicker!

By GS

Of course we would have won if Vick was still here. Joey has the line that Vick should have had. Joey has more time in the pocket and should have been able to make longer passes. If the WRs in the past haven’t gained much, Vick made up for it. The Falcons weren’t all that great a team, and he didn’t have as much to work with, he just made them look good.(made us look like we had a chance.) If we are going to have any chance Joey’s going to have to do a lot better than that. I could understand if he was a rookie, which is what he looked like. Come on let’s be real. The more the charges and allegations against him are mentioned the less serious it sounds, especially the way it was all blown out of proportion. Over dogs? Come one that’s not worth any QB’s career. Not to please anybody. PS: (Anxiously awaiting MV’s return.)

I agree with K. It’s very interesting how the comment was it wasn’t Harrington’s fault. It seems as though each time the Falcons lost the blame was always shifted to Vick. Why isn’t it Harrington’s fault when he couldn’t lead his team into the red zone forget a touchdown. Does he know how to scramble?

You people who think Michael Vick is God apparently have short-term memory problems (probably from smoking too many blunts).

What was the Falcons record the last 2 years? 15-17. So tell me, why do you all seem to think the Birds would’ve won if Vick had played?

Oh yeah. He’s black, and that’s all that matters, right?

as a starter vick’s been to the playoffs twice and missed them twice! which is more than what most nfl qbs have accomplished!

the reason we missed the playoofs twice was one yr it was the defense we couldn’t stop the run, and the second year it was coaching, and rich mckay! vick is a black unique talent in a white racist state so who else is white people going to blame.

ya’ll wanted him out of town so bad, but he was the reason all you fools were even watching this team.

As for as the idiot that said, how can anyone kill an animal for fun, tell that to all of the hunters with the heads of animals hanging over their fireplaces, and yeah also don’t forget to tell that to all the people, who have had family members killed by dogs. Damn, how the tables have turned. You people finally realize that Harrington sucks. Vick would have destroyed the Vikings by himself. The recievers suck, the whole team sucks. Vick made them look good. We didn’t even hear a peep from Crumpler. At least Roddy caught the ball. This was a mediocre team with Vick, but when playing he made them a good team. We woulda made the playoffs, guranteed. Atlanta, we don’t have the band-aid anymore. This team has been exposed for what it was, A BAD TEAM. I’ve never seen Dunn and Crumpler look so bad. You people pull for Brooking. One of you’re good’ol boys. He getting his a* kicked already. D.Hall’s not his emotional self anymore. He know they need Vick.. Vick brought fire to this team, because they knew, with him, they always had a chance to win.. Who are you gonna blame now?!?!?

When did this turn into a racist column and why is the “AJC” allowing comments from these individuals to post? This is a disgrace. The truth is, Bird Babe and the true Atlanta fans, Harrington is a backup QB and Redman is a 3rd string QB. Unfortunately, Vick covered our offensive deficiencies with amazing abilities. He is not playing now as you can clearly see. This country has far too may problems for us to worry about a man and his involvement with dogfighting. Who cares? The problem is, whether you chose to believe it or not, is why this country is still so divided over race? Lord help us. Vick, hang in there…

Claiming Vick is only a mid level QB is that you can’t possibly know. If anything today was proof that he had NO HELP. Outside of Crumpler every single guy in that offense was riding Vick’s coat-tails and now it is becoming very apparent.

I actually feel bad for Harrington because everyone has somehow convinced the guy that this is the best situation he has ever been in. when really that ship sailed when he was cut by Miami.

Why even mention Vick in any sense? You can only speculate what he would have or could have done. The bottom line is Harrington had a decent game but needs to elevate his performance even more to give the birds a chance for a win. And if Dunn has another game like this one, he needs to be benched. Why wasn’t Norwood used more Petrino??? One game will not dictate the season, but if the problems aren’t resolved with the offensive and defensive lines, it will be a long season, like 3 and 13.

But what I saw today was a sorry p** poor white quarterback who couldn’t think and does not have the brains to be an nfl quartback he is too slow, can’t throw, and surely can’t read a defense. He gave the defense two scores but you say it was not his fault come give me a break it was his fault. He is a sorry white qb i guess that what you people wanted and now you have it. We have no play makers…period. You cannot win in this league without play makers. WRs are terrible, without Vick our “great rushing attack” will be shown for what it is, terrible. When your QB is running for 1000 yards, you better have the best rushing attack in the league. I feel for Coach Petrino. I am afraid we will be in for a long season.

Mike Vick shares in the blame for the last two years, and takes the lion’s share of the blame for the problems this year. But don’t act like two years without playoffs means he’s no better than Joey Harrington… Look at the winning percentages.

Before Vick, the Falcons were usually irrelevant. With Vick, despite the problems, we were perenially spoke of in playoff contention.

and ignore the Michael Vick Hater, he’s clearly trying to screw with the board, or prove a point or something.

Oh, and Bird Babe, at the risk of sounding condescending, the preseason is not a gauge for how serviceable a QB is. The preseason is to observe mechanics, effort, and get experience. But the NFL is littered with Preseason MVPs who never saw the playoffs.

I am really sorry to say this… I really don’t expect the Falcons to have a winning year. Not this year at least. Maybe Next year I am going to take a football vacation.. I can’t stand the beating this team is going to take this year.. Love You Michael Vick.. I am awaiting your return to the team Keep your head up and plant a seed.. A seed of Faith. Much prayer is going up for you..

Yes,I suck as a QB, but that is ok, because the ATL doesn’t expect much anyway. Besides, they have a wife-beater managing their baseball team, and just LOVE him. so I figure it is a good place to hang out and collect a paycheck before I get cut and another loser franchise picks me up. That is, unless they all wise up and realize I do not have the ability to QB in this league.

Arthur and company is getting what he deserves, unfortunately we are the benefactors of their mismanagement as well.
Fact 1. - He put all his proverbial eggs in one basket when he paid Vick all of that money, even though he knew there were character issues. Fact 2. - They traded Schwab to end the uproar in ATL. (This is the same organization that traded Farve)
Fact 3. - Had to go out and find a QB. Unfortunately the one he found has drifted around the league and is mediocre on a good day.
Fact 3 - It is going to be a long year.

Harrington looked scared all day out there. I never saw any fire in his eyes only confusion and fear. I am not a Vick fan but at least he had the heart of a competitor and you could see it in his eyes.

Thanks Arthur, you created this situation by getting caught up in visions of glory, by pinning your hopes on a knucklehead. Character matters in life and in sports. Money can’t buy character. Hope you get this figured out.

The truth showed today an always will. If Vick was here and had lost we would have blamed it all on him. UNCLE TOM warrick dunn got just what he deserved. He was getting all those yards because defenses had to key on Vick. Vick made you stretch your defense out and know all defenses will do is load up on the falcons blitz hard all day. As for the NFL and ARTHUR BLANK you are showing a double standard by saying YOU don’t CONDONE animal cruelty when you wouldn’t even let Vick in training camp Yet jonathan Babinox is still playing for the falcons. you set an example now your example will be a empty georgia dome. Let’s see if all 50,000 of them Peta people fill the dome and route for the falcons. No they will not because they were not fans. Bird’s pass protection can’t hold for a pocket passer, and Harrington takes 7 seconds to read his progressions, by then he steps up in the pocket to be tackled. Redman better? Why do we waste time running to the flats. Does H have time for short passes to the backs? WRs suck. Def line tries, but undersized. H should not change plays: too much time, penalties,no better result.

Gandy, Brooking and Harrington…When are we going to make a commitment to fixing major parts of our offense and defense? Gandy is too old and slow for a LT, Brooking is not an effective MLB and Harrington is, well, Harrington. We need to concentrate on a position and draft as such in the first round for talent and not washed up retreads. Something’s gotta give. I’m not saying break the bank on another ridiculous Vick-type contract, but c’mon Mr. Blank, spend your money on some good players.

Anytime you start any comment with “if Vick (or substitute any name) was in this offense….” we know we are in trouble. No team consists of one person. If one person makes this much of a difference (defense embarrassing and still waiting for the offensive line to show up) then the Blank, McKay, et al., have done a poor job of putting a team together. There are times where an individual can make things happen. But it takes an entire team to win championships. We obviously, with or without Vick, are nowhere near winning a championship; unless today was a fluke. See Vick play or don’t see Vick play, the point of the game is to win CHAMPIONSHIPS (and as much of fan I was of Vick’s, I accepted last year we probably were not going to get there with him and needed to get rid of him—-however I wanted us to be prepared to part with him). I like to think (hope against hope) we will see better things as the season progresses. On the bright side, we are tied for second.

We know some of the players sucked today. But what surprised me was how unimaginative the Petrino offense and play-calling looked today.

He better find some other running plays, because Dunn up the middle won’t work any more without MV to spread em out.

More Norwood, and where was Joe Horn? Where was the big FB running some?

Defense looked decent for the most part I thought. One blown play that was a near-drop for a TD, and 2 offense interception TDs.

Defense did their job today - Offense not so much.

And I believe the worst-decision of the new regime so far is to go for unproven distance rather than proven reliability in your FG kicker. Where is Mort? Missing that first FG took the rest of the air out that was still left after the first interception.

Well I was at the game. Harrington is what I said he was on the last blog. The 2nd INT doesn’t matter because the game was over.

Joey cannot or will not throw the ball down the field. He had open guys at times and he has no mobility. Please let’s not hear any more about the PRESEASON.

He can’t play..if you’re the number three pick in the entire draft and you’re already on your third team YOU CAN’T PLAY!

What a disappointment, this team still did not show any offensive imagination. Sort of let down with the Petrino offense. Two concerns, Norwood should have been the starter. I like Dunn, but he did not earn the starting spot. Also, Jennings was a no show on special teams today.

Harrington is too slow with the ball, and the line did not give him time, but he can’t take 6 sacks and expect to move the team down field. We sign Bramlett so we would have a third quarterback, but I think we should take a look at Byron Leftwich and bring him in to back up Harrington until he can learn the offense.

We did not stretch the field at all and Joe Horn now plays for the Falcons, but you would not know it from this game.

Norwood,Robinson, & Horn could provide a spark with Harrington as quarterback, but these guys were not given a chance to contribute.

Sure it’s only one game, but I saw nothing that today to make me think we want see the same thing next week in Jacksonville.

We can’t stop the run (where was Brookings) and we should not run Dunn up the middle.

I was under the impression this offense would strecth the field vertically & horizonally, using our speed guys…totally disappointed…was Knapp on the sideline in disguise!!!

The Falcons allowed two touchdowns on interceptions by Joey Harrington, who was sacked six times. The running game, which led the NFL the past three seasons, managed 96 yards.

Joey, Joey, Joey, Joey….

I don’t know what to say. I’m optimistic, and this was only the first game of the season. So, I hope things get corrected. But man, where do you start? O-Line, ST, Def, ???

The problem with Joey is that psychologically he’s damaged goods. The great ones always forget about the last play and move on. He held onto the ball, way too long on 2 of the sacks. He missed Horn on a comeback route, with plenty of time in the pocket. The interception caused by Jenkins was due to Joey’s lapse in judgment at times, because Jenks wouldn’t have gotten too many yards, 2 at the most. He has to develop his down field vision. He’s so worried about getting hit that he would take the safe underneath routes vs going down field.

Positive note, I love Petrino’s honesty, in his post game interview he said Joey’s play was inconsistent and they need consistency.

I’m not putting the blame all on Joey’s shoulders, but be honest everybody, you knew he would play like this. Deep down inside, you were hoping and praying that Joey’s play would be better, but reality kicked in.

I would rather have an execiting dog-fighting playmaking convict than lame Joey H at QB. At least the ConVick made watching the Falcons interesting and tolerable. He may not have had a good QB rating or the best accuracy. But, there is no denying that he was a playmaker and he moved the chains behind the same LAME supporting cast that put up 3 points and didn’t get anywhere close to the endzone. At least when the Falcons lost with MV7, I was thoroughly entertained and held out hope for a win in the next game.
