Different without Vick

It was tough being at the Dome knowing that Vick isn’t the Falcons’ quarterback anymore. This season is going to be different without the flashy, exciting, unpredictable play of Vick. Maybe it won’t be such a bad thing.

A lot of people are selling their season tickets. I’m not one of them. Vick was a big reason I bought season tickets a few seasons ago, but he wasn’t the only reason. The team needs our support more than ever.

Joey Harrington isn’t Michael Vick, but I’m happy with the way he played tonight. He broke the huddle and walked to the line on a mission. He was accurate. He led the team on a couple of scoring drives. He talked to his teammates on the sideline. He sat with his teammates. He congratulated his teammates when they came off the field after a score. He gets it. He knows he can’t do it by himself, something Michael Vick thought he could do.

Demorrio looked good. Really impressed with Jamaal Anderson. Have to say I miss Kerney pumping up the crowd. Got to hope that the run defense improves when everyone gets healthy.

Can’t wait to get Friday’s game done and start the season. Let’s see what this team is made of.

Go Falcons!

Too bad our QB is out for the season, no big deal we were going to have to win on D anyway. Speaking of D, thanks Jay I thought no one got it but me! that Hall guy is not that good, Who said he was? where did that impression come from? I say trade him for a good backup QB. This will be a very good year for the falcons, and Joey will have a carrier year. No one expected Chandler to take us to the super bowl when we got him…so all just chill, we wont be the worst team in the NFL this year and making the super bowl??? well how realistic is that no matter who is behind center? we better get some “D”

While we’re on this subject, has anyone ever seen a worse job of televising a game than ESPN did on this one. They didn’t want to show or announce the game. All they wanted to do was go on and on about Vick after all day coverage of the same crap. That Tony Kornwhatever is nothing but a talking head who knows nothing about football and couldn’t understand why Petrino didn’t want his players talking about Vick because in his words ” that’s what it’s about.” At least Jaworski told him it is not about that, it’s about the Falcons trying to win football games. I say if you’re not gonna do the game right don’t televise it, let another network do it. JMO

You are right, tj, I get up and leave the room for most sports telecasts now - including this one - because of the talking heads. They all think they are Oprah, Dr. Phil, and Nancy Grace rolled into one. Some of those guys doing the Braves are the worst. I tried to watch a game a couple of weeks ago and for one 15 minute stretch (including commercials)they yammered on about nonsense while the game went on in the background. Call the freaking game and leave the socio-political crap to the news hacks and Bill Maher types. Go Falcons!

Ah, so now that target number one is gone, all the ‘Vick annihilators’ are going to swing their targets to hall, eh?

(Disclaimer: I am not supporting Vick, and what is happening to him is exactly what should)

The previous being said. .that doesn’t excuse or make right the single minded pursuit and attacks that were made beyond all reason before this.

And it won’t excuse the evident transferal of those attacks to Deangelo Hall.

Vick has to take care of himself. The only dogs we need to discuss are those in Athens. Here in Atlanta we need to be supporting the Falcons football team. The Vick era is over and done with for better or worse. There is nothing we can do about any of it now. Suck it up and move on.

Jay, Hall has never been anything special. Nothing new about that. Why is he off limits for analysis in a fan blog? You better believe that Harrington’s play this season is going to get ripped up and compared to Vick, is that okay though?

Now I guess everyone is gonna come on here and rave about how much better Joey H is than Vick. How he’s thrown more touchdowns and all that. Come on people. The guy is gone, he’s apologized. He seems to be miserable. Are you all happy now? Vick gave you all what you wanted. His downfall. Another brotha self destructed. Leave it up to us to kick a man when he’s down….

Wasn’t it nice to see a QB stay in the pocket and run the offense the way it should be done tonight. Wasn’t missed was the happy feet, erratic passes, and carrying the ball like a loaf of bread, usually followed by a fumble. It was also amazing that the receivers can catch the ball (exception Roddy) with a QB that can actually pass the ball rather than just sling it all over the place. The Falcons played well considering all the Vick drama going on all day. Maybe the Falcon’s can break the cycle of the last two Vick led losing seasons in a row. No, Vick didn’t just win. The only unfortunate thing is the commentary during the game about Vick in between every play is going to get old. The birds, however, with a couple of wins under their belt can maybe break this cycle of blather. Go Falcons!

I agree the coverage sucked I watched most of the game on mute. D-Hall is a joke. I like what I saw as a whole, I think the team will earn some respect this year. I wish Vick was there but it’s time to focus on the season without him.

I read yesterday on the espn web site that they was not going to cover the Vick case very much, during the game. what the hell was that last night. the talks on the sideline as the falcons was moveing down the field on touchdown drives and we get a small screen to watch in the upper corner. what a load of crap ESPN!!!!!!!!!! Arthur dont even thank about one day bringing vick back.

I didn’t know what to expect last night at the Dome. There were only a handful of folks with no. 7 jerseys mostly blacks but a few whites had them on. I saw more no. 13 jersey’s than I expected but only on whites. I did however see a lot of white folks wearing Crumpler 83, Dunn 28, Hall 21, Norwood 32. I saw one black wearing Bartkowski 10. I saw no other blacks wearing any white players jersey. For what its worth, these are my honest observations from last night, nothing racial just fact.

Thank god it wasn’t just me. It was if there wasn’t a game on last night.

ESPN worst announcing job ever last night. The Chris Mortenson interview was really awful with Norwood scoring and it registered a bleep to the talking heads.

Speaking of Chris Mortenson it looked great when he said McKay was in trouble then they panned to Blank and McKay and they appeared to be laughing at him.

ESPN move on as the city of Atlanta certainly is!

Two football related questions:

1) Why is Roddy White still a Falcon? 2) Why will Jerious Norwood not get 20 touches a game in the regular season?

And finally, why in the heck is Vick STILL a racial issue? The man pled guilty to a felony crime. Admitted guilt to a federal judge. Is guilty. He will now pay his dues and we’ll see what happens, but in the meantime let’s forget about him and move on to football.

By Big Ed

August 28, 2007 8:29 AM | Link to this

I realize the media must do it’s job but I feel ESPN missed a pretty good game last night. As Harrington was moving the team down field and Norwood showed great athletic ability and balance scoring touchdown, they were interviewing Chris Mortenson. Then the announcers came back and it was an Oh by the way the Falcons scored. As a football fan I felt they could have done everything they needed to do re: Vick during halftime. By the middle of the third quarter I was so fed up with Tony K’s bashing of Vick, Harrington, the Bengals, and everyone else he could think of that I turned the sound off. If this is going to be ESPN’s MNF recipe for success I’m not going to watch. They have forgotten what made them successful in the first place and that’s the product on the field. Go FALCONS

By Jim

August 28, 2007 8:51 AM | Link to this

Nothing against Vick’s abilities (he is one hell of an athelete), but it was actually refreshing to see a traditional quarterback running the Falcons again who can 1.)drop back and find open receivers 2.)spread the ball around (instead of throwing to Crumpler every time) and 3.)make accurate throws……Don’t know if all this will last into the regular season, but it looks encouraging so far. We will see. The NFL is so unpredictable these days. Who knows? They might end up being pretty damn good.

I didn’t think it was possible, but those idiots on ESPN were even more annoying than Joe Morgan doing baseball games. Yacking about Vick while the Falcons were on a scoring drive! Dipsh@ts!

Oh yeah, why does everything have to turn into a racial argument on these blogs? Some of you folks really need to grow up!

“Jim” I totally agree with everything you just said! And i also would like to say that im an African-american, i was and still is a Vick fan..(on the field), but it was really good to see the ball thrown to other people besides Crumpler, thats what most teams knew last year. And i really hate watching ESPN baseball with Joe Morgan and that other guy who cant pronounce Betemit (Bet a Me) or Diaz (Dee-oww). I think this team (Falcons) will be worth watching, just need some work on defense. Deangelo Hall is overrated!

I know it’s difficult to read much into a preseason game but the Falcons looked good. Given the days events, I thought they looked determined and focused!! Nice job by BP to keep the team together so far.

My thoughts on the game:

1) Joey looks comfortable in the pocket, on several throws he paid the price & got hit but it was nice to him stay in the pocket and wait for the play to develop.

2) I liked the 5 wide package, Joey found the open WR (Jennings) for a well executed TD.

3) Most of Joey’s throws were accurate, even the throw White dropped was on the money.

4) Playmakers got the ball - the Norwood TD was beautiful.

5) Ocho Cinco got the best of the 1 on 1 w/ D Hall but the Falcons still won!!

By Matt Yoder

August 28, 2007 9:10 AM | Link to this

I was really happy with how this team pulled together last night! It’s really good to see traditional football again. QB passes-Runningback runs - I wish Vick the best though and do hope that he gets another chance. I do feel strongly like no team unless it’s the Raiders will want to put him at the QB position (the face of the franchise). I see him coming back in several years as a successful wide reciever/kick returner. If the Falcons would have done that several years ago with Vick and had Shaub at QB I honestly feel that would have made them a serious playoff contender. But so is life…Let the season BDGIN! GO FALCONS!!!!

By G

August 28, 2007 9:14 AM | Link to this

With or without Vick, the majority of the Falcon’s success relies upon the “D”. This is how it’s always been and will continue to be this way. The offensive philosophy is a refreshing / multi-option set for almost any Joe shmuck of a QB to succeed. The play calling makes it easier for players to succeed this year. The O-line needs to be more consistent (what’s new). Don’t hold your breath for the playoffs anytime soon, Falcon fans.

Roddy White? He should be converted to a DB. He is the absolute worst WR in the league. He can’t even catch a cold butt-necked in the snow. Robinson should start ahead of White, and Roddy “baby-hands” White should be cut. You people should really get your feathers in a ruffle over keeping this guy on the team. He consistently drops at least 12 pts a game. He dropped 6 pts last night (improvement). Blame that on Vick too?

This was the worst MNF coverage that I have witnessed. It was only interesting if you enjoy seeing dead horses get hit by a stick. Jaws did a good job correcting Korny, in redirecting the focus from Vick to the Falcons.

They were correct in pointing out the fact this Vick issue has resurrected the racial divide in Atlanta.

I am so sick of Vick this and Vick that. I don’t even watch ESPN anymore because if this. It is time to get over it and if you are a Falcon Fan move on. All this team has to do is play 500 ball and it is as good as it has been in the past 2 years. Seems like some people were more interested in Vick’s accomplishments instead of the actual Falcons the past few years. Oh yea he might come back and end up a Raider one day since they are notorious for getting controversial players.

I agree with every word that thebirdbabe said in his column. For once after reading several columns I found one that is on the ball and says the right words. Harrington should be given a chance to show what he can do. And the fans should stop wearing #7 because it is an insult to the team and Harrington. Vick destroyed himself for what he did and he knew he was doing it. He should really spend 5 years in prison but 3 years and not less should teach him a lesson he’ll never forget. The prosecutor and his lawyers should have let him go before the judge without a plea. What is the matter with that prosecutor? I would have loved to read about the jury finding him guilty and the judge sentence him to 5 years. Why have him make a plea? I really don’t understand that. Maybe in your next column you can explain it to me.

The coverage on ESPN was the worst I have ever seen (or heard). Seems like every time the Falcons were moving down the field and scoring, ESPN was conducting some stupid sideline interview. Vick, Vick Vick. Hell, if I’d taken a drink every time they said Vick’s name, I’d have been sloshed before the end of the first quarter, and completely unconscious by half time.

Whoever said it was worse than Joe Morgan, you hit the nail on the head. And who thought anybody could be worse than Joe?

I was impressed with Harrington staying in the pocket and new offensice scheme. Our corners still need a little work, but the D-line lockeds pretty good. Speaking of good, why is Norwood not getting the ball more. He has the speed to beat just about anybody and he is not a ego maniac. Petrino, please give Norwood the ball more, he brings a new deminsion to the team and offense. Norwood should get 20 touches a game and his pass blocking is getter alot better.

I thought the team played well last night, except for Chad Johnson burning the defense a few times. But that’s to be expected occasionally, he is just that good. Safe to say we won’t see wideouts of that caliber every week. We’ll probably have to wait for the season to begin to see the complete defensive unit. Rod Coleman will make a huge difference in that line. Overall, I think we’re on the right track.

The presentation of the game last night was the worst I’ve ever seen. Those morons in the booth made me long for the days of Howard Cosell. Howard was a windbag but he had an intellect and a varied vocabulary. The idiots we were saddled with, last night, kept saying the same things over and over. Maddening! The women occupying space on the sidelines just parroted what the lunkheads in the booth said when they came on. I hope that’s as lame as it gets.

I am behind this team ALL THE WAY!! Joey looked great, we just have to give him time to throw & he can be very effective. Also, our receivers (that means you Roddy) have to catch the ball…Jamal looks like a monster!! If Abe can stay healthy, which is a big if, they will be huge for this team. What’s up with the linebackers? They’re supposed to be such a strong unit but the safeties were making most of the run stops, not good. I love Brooking but his best years are behind him. As for Mr. 7, good riddance, I despise you for what you’ve done to this franchise. I hope never to hear from you AGAIN. Go Birds!!

A footnote to my above comment: Harrington should fit the bill as a suitable QB for you much maligned Falcon’s fans. He’s no Tom Brady, but you won’t find him puffing blunts, and hanging out with blingy-bling homeboys at the braid shop. He belonged to the National Honor Society in high school, and ACTUALLY GRADUATED from college with a business degree. He also plays classical piano. He is much more the face of a franchise and a role model for young people than some thugster/animal killer who happens to run well. We should be celebrating the suspension of Vick. Get rid of the Pacman’s, Chris Henry’s, Tank Johnson’s, etc, and send a message that playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right.

How can the delusional Vick fans just accept his little half-hearted apology? Where is the accountability? Forgiveness is a process that takes time. Anyone who just says “I forgive you” for just saying I’m sorry is an enabler and is out of touch with reality. How on earth can someone just forgive a person who has lied so much? Mike Vick must show that he is a changed man over time with his actions. He is only sorry that he got caught. He didn’t even tell you few supporters that he was sorry. Is Mike Vick really sorry ? If he is really sorry he would call a press conference and invite Arthur Blank to attend and make the following statement: “Mr. Blank, I did not hold up my part of our deal, I let you down, I let the team down, and I let all the Falcons fans down. Since I am now unable to perform for the team as you expected of me, I am giving back the TWENTY TWO MILLION DOLLARS in bonus money that I did not, and can not earn. Compare that to the trash in this world who masquerade as people. That is why so many Atlantans have turned on Mike Vick. It has nothing to do with his race. They just know their dog will not lie to them or try and cover up the truth or be an arrogant self rightous sob. Mike Vick did all of those things.**

lets let the negitive talk go!! remember d.hall was up against one of the best wideouts in football, they are going to catch balls. as far as roddy go you are not going to catch them all, but that one should always be caught. i can’t wait to see roddy & d. robinson on opposite sides of the field in a 4 or 5 receiver set.

AC BANKS, I agree with everything you said about this team. I really wanted to see Vick under Petrino though, but I can forget about that. Hopefully we can rally around the fact that nobody is giving us a chance. GO BIRDS. One thing that I disagree with you on is the Schaub deal. We got Jamal Anderson, Chris Houston, and a 2nd rdr next yr. With the way Chauncey Davis has developed, we are blessed to have Jamal. One more thing, I sure hope D.Hall steps it up in the regular season because he looked horrible last night. And yes I am a black man who was just as excited as everyone else when we landed Vick, but its time to move on people. Lets support the players we have.

Ken Strickland Roddy drops far too many passes. He should be the 5th option on this team at best. Those catches could be the difference between wins and losses. I have absolutely no confidence in him at all. Horn, Jenkins, Robinson, Jennings, White. By the way, when is he always open? The kid only has 4.5 speed. Lets face it, Rich McCay is horrible when it comes to drafting recievers. If you dont believe me check his record in Tampa and Atlanta. Hopefully I’m wrong about Roddy man, but I just dont see it. GO BIRDS

Vick is gone. He won’t be back with the Falcons and probably won’t play for any other NFL team either ever again. Vick from day one did not care about anybody except himself. He was surrounded by enablers (fans, Blank, McKay) and he had no reason to believe anything other than that he was untouchable. They are as guilty in his downfall as he is. But the truth is, he is gone. Now let’s play football. Support the Falcons and support the city. Let the healing begin.

Come on guys, can we talk Falcon Football? Its obvious that some people love Vick and some people hate him. Regardless of what category you fall in, its time to play football. Black, White, Mexican, Puerto-Rican, or whatever, lets stop this nonsense and support our team. I’ve lived hear all my life and have always been a Falcon fan, and I’d be damn if I’m going to let anything stand in my way of supporting my team. Yes,I’m black, and Yes I was a Vick fan, but Mike isnt coming through that tunnel, so we need to get over it and show dedication like we always have. I still have the knot on my head from the Minnesota game in 98, when Morten made that field goal and I jumped up and hit the cieling fan, for crying out loud. I want to feel like that again. DONT YALL? GO BIRDS STOP THE HATE

terrell,

I’m with you man! When Mort kicked that field goal I went completely insane, and within about 30 minutes I’d purchased two 50 yard line lower level seats in Miam for the Super Bowl. Cost? $7500.00!

Mid way through the 3rd quarter reality hit me! Oh well!

I have read some very, very negative comments on this blog. Can’t we all just get along? Can’t we just be glad that the Falcons won last night? Why do you folks have to provoke one another?
