Thanks, defense

This is why I couldn’t wait for Abraham to get back in form. He’s a difference-maker when healthy. Today he got pressure on the quarterback, and it turned into seven points for the Falcons. Until then, the Falcons looked flat and Gradkowski confident. After that, the rookied got rattled and eventually was yanked.

The defense did a great job of keeping the Bucs out of the end zone in the first half. It would have been a different game if the Bucs had scored touchdowns instead of field goals. Then they sealed the victory with the big forced fumble on Cadillac and Morten’s FG. Great day for the defense.

Lelie had some big catches. I wish he would have tried a little harder on the lob pass in the end zone that resulted in an interception. Not Vick’s fault. Good to see Roddy White get a key catch on a third-down conversion. Hope it helps his confidence.

Justin Griffith did a nice job filling in after Dunn and Norwood left the game, but we really need those guys going down the stretch. Hope their injuries aren’t serious.

Go Falcons!

great win can’t wait for the saturday game vs. dallas. Does anybody know if vick’s hamstring is still bothering him? He only attemped 3 rushes for 5 yards. That is definitely not vick-like.

Just thought I’d peek in real quick and wish great grief upon all the HATERS who are bound to show up; with empty hatred because the Falcons WON. Vick’s passes were caught as well. See what happens when receivers catch passes? A couple of bonehead plays but everyone has them from time to time.

GO FALCONS. Haters choke yourselves.

Good win. Two down and three more to go. Unfortunately we just played the two easiest of the five. The next three teams we play are all still fighting for the playoffs just like us. No more teams left with rookie QB’s playing either. Over the next three weeks we will see what this team is made of and whether mora can save his job.

Screw the haters. Nothing that had gone wrong with the Falcons this year (besides a couple of fumbles) was Vick’s fault. Look at today- the receivers hung on, and they won. Give a little credit to Ed Donatell and the defensive coaches. They’ve had a lot of injuries this year, but I’ve noticed that from the second half of the NewOrleans game on, they haven’t given up much at all in the second half. The Falconsd are making excellent adjustments on defense during games. They’ve done a great job of masking problems in the secondary.

4 the haters, please don’t come on here and try to credit vick and the offense for this win. The falcons defense clearly won this game today. Hell they even scored one of our two touchdowns and set up the field goal at the end that put the game away. If our offense plays the next three weeks like they did today we will finish 0-3 and out of the playoffs. In fact our offense really stunk today if you want to be truthful about it.

I have a point I need to make and I would like for you guys thoughts on my observation. It’s kind of funny that Vick needs only a few yards to be the first quarterback to run for over 1,000 yards and he seems to not want to break the record today. I guess he works only for Nike and not the team and the fans. If that’s the case then his best efforts are based on things that are off the field. No matter how good he’s playing, we can’t have our leader, especially trying to make the playoffs, thinking about showing out on a big stage to break an NFL record. What do you thing of my observation of Vick on today’s game?

Tampa was 3-9, the Falcons next 3 games: they will lose to the Cowboys, and even if they beat the Panthers and Eagles that puts them at 9-7, not good enough to make the playoffs. Another loser year in the Atl.

I want to save all the haters some time and post the following: 1) vick should be a RB 2) Vick should be a WR 3) Vick is an average QB 4) Vick is only playing because Blank loves him 5) Schaub should be the QB 6) Vick is stupid and has herpes I guess I may have left a couple off, but I think that takes care of most of them. Rob G, I don’t know why Vick didn’t run more today. I do know that Knapp calls all of the plays. Vick has put his health on the line in the past and has been criticized for running recklessly and risking injury.

On another note, it is about time the defense stepped up. The last New Orleans game was over at half-time thanks to some blown coverage and the completion on a hail mary for a TD.

Of course, we’ll take the win; however, everyone has to be concerned that the offense only scored one touchdown against a 3 and 9 team. This type of offensive play won’t feed the dog! Three hundred yards of offense between the 20’s! I don’t see a dang thing to get giddy about!

Michael Vick tweaked his hamstring against the redskins. Don’t you think that had anything to do with the fact that he didnt want to run and get injured even more? there is no conspiracy theory or lack of leadership or anything. He stayed in the pocket and played quarterback. I thought that’s what all you haters wanted. You vick critics are always able to find something wrong even after a good, needed win. Vick played fine. Dan, come on man. When was the last time you saw Vick run for 5 yards in a close game with a playoff birth opportunity. I’m just saying, he made no attempt to run. I don’t know what game you was watching but we punted the ball a lot to give the ball back to Tampa when Vick could have ran for the first down. Just something to think about. Plus I am a Black Man from the SWATS!!

Although I’m not a huge Vick fan , it is very obvious that many of you WOULD RATHER SEE THE FALCONS LOSE so you can bash Vick for everything that goes wrong, instead of seeing a win. A true fan wants to see the team win, regardless of personalities etc.

I didn’t think they could win this game of the losers but they really surprised me. The defense played well and Vick was his usal self except he didn’t run much; probably an injury that he did not want to re-aggravate. This will give him more time for Dallas preparation. Don’t give up on the falcons, they can still pull it off. They should beat Dallas since it is a home game; probably 37 - 13. Vick will run for 350 yards and throw 4 touchdown passes. They will probably lose to the panthers since they are another slop team. The Eagles will probably cook the falcon’s goose in Philadelphia. Still that is 8 and 8 which is not bad considering the group of characters that we have on offense. No playoffs this year but it will be great next year after Arthur gets rid of this coaching staff and makes some good trades. I thought Jimmy Williams player okay today; he might be better than we think.

THEY WON! Let’s trash them.

Vick did suck today. His failure to cover the backs in the TB passing game was inexcusable. His snap and his failure to hold the snap on the FG attempt was putrid.

Since he only “runs for Nike” then Nike must have had a vision of the RB injuries before the game and then made the coaches call certain plays.

It had to be Nike that called that 3rd and 1 pass. Wonder if Tampa would have taken Vick today? Naahhh, they don’t buy into the Vick “myth”

I ask again, is there anywhere that intelligent Falcon fans can discuss the actual games instead of their great-great-great grandparents hangups?

Better, still cautiously optimistic. Tampa Bay had no QB to their defense.

At least we can see a wild card spot from here.

Might as well consider these last three games the beginning of our playoffs. We really need 2 out of 3 at a min.

One of our ends got trashed by tv nationwide.I cant remember who it was but TB intercepted it in our inzone because our end gave up.The tv announcer was so livid , he could of easily been one of these bloggers.

For the idiots who are trying to suggest that Weinke is better than Vick… yards per attempt were nearly identical. When you throw the ball 61 times you better get 300 yards passing. Vick only threw the ball 23 times in the game — it’s hard to expect more than 200 yards if your pass attempts are so low. Vick played an efficient game with the exception of the end zone interception, which was more Knapp’s fault for the retarded play call than Vick or Lelie. When the play called for him to stay in the pocket and throw he made good decisions and moved the football. When the play called for him to move out of the pocket he was under pressure and as a result had to throw the ball away or took a sack. Once again Knapp shows that he is a complete idiot. How often does this same sequence have to repeat itself before Knapp realizes that Vick knows when to scramble better than Knapp does? Keep Vick in the pocket and protect him, he does a great job. Make Vick roll out of the pocket and throw on the move and he gets pressure and makes inaccurate throws or throws it away. It’s pretty simple. Watch the damn film.

These stat nerds who come here acting like Weinke or Peyton Manning had great games today need to log off their computers and actually watch a game for a change. If you actually watch the games you know that Vick had a much better game than either of them — if you are watching your fantasy stats add up instead, you have no idea.

Props to the WRs for stepping up today though. Only 2 drops, both came early, and for the most part the receivers stepped up and ran good routes and looked the ball into their hands. And great game by the defense — our players overcame some pansy play-calling from Donatell (you are playing a rookie qb! blitz!) and our front 4 did a great job shutting down Hyundai Williams.

Overall all the players played pretty well, but as usual the coaching wasn’t up to where it needs to be. Playcalling on both sides of the ball needs to get way better if this team wants to have a chance of beating Dallas on Saturday.

Simple summary of a win against one of the three worst teams in the league: The defense saves day—two turnovers = 14 points—and our receivers make Vick look good by catching balls poorly thrown.

Yes, TMoney, everyone has “these” types of games and the good teams win them. The problem I have is that it seems that we have more of “these” than good games. The reality is that we have a solid D…sometimes (though I blame the D inconsistency on an inordinate amount if injuries). We have a QB who can read defenses and make throws…sometimes. Our WRs can catch…sometimes. Our OL can pass protect…sometimes. The only thing we do all the time is run and now our two explosive RBs might be out. I’m enjoying the win, yes, but wondering what we do well this week. There is no doubt in my mind that this team could go to the Super Bowl. They could just as easily lose out. To be this inconsistent this late in the year normally would indicate that the manager of the team, the “head” coach, is in over his skis. With all that said, I’ll be screaming for ‘em with the rest of you. GO FALCONS!!!

Nice win today. I didn’t watch that much of it, but I noticed near the end of the 3rd qtr, Falcons had the ball, 3rd and 4, and they then threw some really low percentage pass to Jenkins along the sideline. It fell incomplete. Falcons then punted.

Also, Jimmy Williams looked great today. Granted, he was covering the washed-up Ike Hilliard or the tortoise-like Anthony Becht most of the game, but he still made some nice plays and most importantly made some sure tackles in the open field. Next week will be a much tougher test for Williams, going up against Terry Glenn and Jason Witten.

We got away with stupidly refusing to blitz Gradkowski today, because our D-line dominated Tampa’s O-line. Not gonna happen against Dallas. If Donatell lets Romo sit in the pocket all day and play zone, T.O. and Terry Glenn are going to get open in zone coverage and Romo’s gonna hit them in stride all day. They better come out and blitz next week.

Hopefully Dunn and Norwood get healthy in time for next week’s game. But Griffith definitely showed that he is more than capable of running hard and picking up good yards. Use him on the goal line!

I’m guessing the Cowboys next week are going to spy Vick with Roy Williams quite a lot, which means Alge Crumpler should be able to get open down the middle of the field. Dallas’ safeties can’t cover, which means Crumpler should be getting open quite often. Hopefully Knapp watches the film and realizes that Vick is much more efficient when he gets to sit in the pocket and make his reads. But I doubt it.

And the Falcons need to come out of the tunnel getting off to a better start. This is 2 weeks in a row they have let the other team score twice before putting any points on the board. Someone’s gotta get this team fired up in the first quarter so that they don’t fall behind. It’s not gonna be easy to come back against teams like Dallas and Carolina.

dan,

Do you have a reading disorder?

This was a review of TODAY’S game and, other than the one drop by Crumpler, several of Vick’s throws were too low or too high and our receivers made some difficult catches. Do you realize that Vick, despite a strong arm, is the worst deep passer in the game? He threw several long balls today that were out of bounds and uncatchable. Vick is simply a fast guy who can THROW—not pass—long tight spirals.

I didn’t “guarantee” a loss—I predicted one. Know the difference?

Even as an expert, I can’t predict the Bucs giving up 14 points on two fumbles—the difference in my prediction coming true. I definately predicted would would ordinarily happen and that was the Bucs rendering useless our imitation of an NFL QB.

One prediction that will hold is the Falcons, with Vick as their QB, will once again finish 8-8.

If the Falcons can beat Carolina and Philadelphia, it doesn’t matter if they lose to Dallas because they will have tiebreakers over Carolina and Philly. So yeah, 9-7 can definitely get them into the playoffs.

And as much as I like the improvement in the team the past 2 weeks, I just can’t see Jim Mora beating Bill Parcells, even if Mora has the All-Century team and Parcells has Reggie Ball at QB. But it will definitely be an exciting game, a lot of playmakers on the field at the same time.

14 points on two fumbles? What game were you watching idiot?

By dirtie birdie

December 10, 2006 05:22 PM | Link to this

god, there are some retards who blog on the AJC! did you guys even watch the game before you started talking? or did you just read the stat sheet at the end and saw Vick ran for 5 yards and said Oh, Vick did not want to run today, Vick is injured, Vick is part of some retarded NIke conspiracy, he was too afraid to break the record.

How retarded are some of you? That Nike conspiracy has to be about the most retarded logic i have ever seen anyone post on here - yes even more retarded than alot of the idiot racists who post on here.

The reason vick did not run for much was simple: He never runs well against the Bucs and Monte Kiffin’s defense.

He has had one or two games running well against them but for the most part has been shut down from a running standpoint.

The Bucs defense has always been a fast defense that has been able to keep outside containment on vick. It was not that vick was hurt or that he did not want to run or that Knapp did not call enough running plays for Vick. If you were actually watching the game you would have seen that. On almost every play, they had a spy on Vick.

Alot of the times they actually had two spies: especially in those college option formations: one spy for vick and one spy for dunn: as Moose pointed out on Fox, the Bucs were even actually alternating between which one of the spies would get who: were you guys watching the game, this was explained to you.

And the reality is that unless you are still a teenager or younger, you should have been intelligent enough to realize what you were watching.

The biggest problem I had with Knapp in the game though was that all of the Bucs containment spies were out left where of course Vick always runs and scrambles out to.

I do not understand why Knapp did not call more plays to run to Vick’s right or to at least roll out right: I think they would have had the Bucs napping if they did - instead the falcons would not make that adjustment and they were the ones Knapping.

The fair criticism of vick is not to say stupid things like he did not want to run because of some retarded Nike conspiracy which I still do not understand the logic behind.

the fair criticism of Vick today would be to ask why, when he realized that all of the containment and spies of the BUCS were out to the left, did he insist on rolling out left where he could not get himself free.

That I think is where we are forced to defend Vick against people who say he can not read defenses.

He should have understood by reading the defense and seeing how they were playing him that running to the left just was not going to do it today because monte, gruden, and the bucs D were not going to let him have that.

Vick should have read the defense and been able to understand that if he is going to try to run today that he needs to go right because it ain’t there on the left. That is where an intelligent fan could criticize Mike Vick today.

But most of you are too childish and immature to even realize what you are watching on your television. I truly do not think most of you who are saying these stupid things were even watching the game. You just saw the stat sheet afterwards.

It could also be that Vick and Knapp did read the defense and realized that things were open downfield and that they could run the ball with dunn, norwood, and griffith and that is what they did.

it also could have been that containment was outside on the right side as well and that we just did not see that because of the nature on the television screen and television coverage and because they never ran anything to the right, so you could not see what kind of spy they might have had out there. I do not know.

Good second half by the falcons today. For all the crap everyone gives donatell, with all of the injuries this year, and with a few bad games, he has for the most part had a very good year. who else can lose two pro bowl DEs and a middle linebacker who reportedly is supposed to be good and then still have his D keeping his O in the game.

Guys you can blindly support Vick all you want. There is no question that he is as inconsistent as any of the other players on the team…just not any more inconsistent. He also happens to be extremely gifted. At this point in his career his decision making could be better. That said, if Vick was our worst problem we’d be 11-2 right now because the man does make plays. It was nice to see Abe back and making a difference. The whole season is next week. While the Saints hold the tie breakers don’t count us out of the divisional race yet.

And based upon action today I think you’ve really got to trade Brady and Peyton (if you can get anything for them!)

They’re not smart enough to win.

Dirtie Birdie, good post. I disagree with a couple of things though — first of all, from what I saw nearly every time he moved out of the pocket today it was either a designed rollout called by Knapp or a situation where he was under pressure. I agree that he would have had more success running if he had gone to his right, but that would have forced him to make a throw across his body which would have probably been even less accurate. Left-handed QBs are more comfortable running to their left in general. The truth is Vick’s accurate passes usually come when he stays in the pocket and has time to step into his throw. When he’s on the move in either direction he tends to hurry his throw and either overthrow it or throw it too hard. If he had rolled to his right it would have been much harder for him to keep the pass option open while scrambling. Really I would like to see a game where all of Knapp’s pass plays call for Vick to stay in the pocket, with no designed rollouts or moving pockets at all, where every time Vick scrambled would be on his own to get away from pressure.

Donatell takes a lot of crap because his Cover 3 vanilla defense doesn’t work against good offensive lines. The Bucs’ O-line was sufficiently crappy to where we could get consistent pressure with the front 4 without blitzing. Good teams do a better job of protecting their QBs, which means when we rush 4 against them we won’t get any pressure and their QBs will have all day to pick apart our soft zone coverage. Donatell’s game plan every week seems to be to start off with the Cover 3 vanilla zone, see how well it works, and then start blitzing in the 2nd half if it’s not working. This is what he did against the Saints and Redskins for example, which is why Campbell and Brees were significantly better in the first half than the second half. The problem is, by halftime if the opposing QB gets to sit in the pocket and pick apart our defense, that means we are down by 2 or 3 scores going into the 2nd half, forcing us to move away from the running game and giving the opposing defense a green light to blitz Vick and put him on his back.

Definitely nice to see Abraham back at 100%. Hopefully he can stay healthy from here on out.

Good win. It wasn’t the greatest game by the Falcons, but those are the kinds of wins that are truly encouraging.

See, can you win a game when you aren’t playing good football? If you can, you have a chance to beat great teams. If you don’t, then you have no chance. This was a game that we won and it was a good win.

Also, the Bucs always plays us well the second time we see them. Monte Kiffin can just outcoach Knapp, and Knapp is just terrible. But even in that, we was still able to get a victory and I am happy.

Oh, and as for Vick, he didn’t play a good game. He didn’t win the big game for us, but he didn’t lose it for us either, so it was pretty average, which was fine.

But I do have to laugh at the Haters because they are always bringing up Vick’s pay. Who cares about the stats if they win? Who cares but you? You’re not getting any of that money, so just relax.

Vick is worth every penny and then some. Did you see the stadium today? Even though it wasn’t all the way full, there was many more in attendance than what was in that stadium the last time the Bucs was at home.

Look at Detroit’s stadium today. There was a lot more people there when the Falcons played there.

In short, Vick brings people to stadiums. All stadiums.

It has been argued that Blank got his ROI within the first season they signed Vick to that contract. If that’s correct, all of the money that is made by Blank is pure profit.

But that’s why owners are owners, coaches are coaches, and fans are fans. But I am glad some of these fans are not owners.

The Division Championship!!! What have you people been smoking? This team can barely get itself out of the gutter, managing to beat the Redskins and Tampa Bay, two of the worst teams in the NFL. And in both games, the falcons were losing in the first half. Vick is a joke; quit propping up this overpaid running back. This team is going absolutely nowhere. Jimmy Williams and Deangelo Hall will not be able to save it, no matter how well they play (which will never be good enough for what they are paid.) Fire cheerleader Mora and get a real coach. Get Randy Moss and Ricky Williams; bring in Mike Ditka and you will have a winning team.

ya know….where were you living? Before Vick got here we played in the Super Bowl! Since, we’ve been to an NFC Championship Game and lost. Now, have we “improved” since then or not? Falcons “were” ONE step from the Super Bowl and have proven that they are/were unable to take it to the next level. The level that Chandler and Anderson got us to. Vick and Dunn are not the answer to the Super Bowl question! Our “D” was slightly better back then - not much! Chandler had to put up 30, 40 points in games coming from behind to win.

So when the ‘98 season started people predicted that Chandler and Jamal would take us to the Super Bowl? How old was Chandler then? Why was he available?

Jamal was a late round draft choice and was finally able to get a chance to run the ball and we ran him to death.

It’s a different league and a different team so let up on them will you? My god man the current Falcons have guys who were in their first year of high school in ‘98!

Mike Vick is far from perfect, as I am sure Mike Vick would tell you if you spoke to him one on one. But just the constant simple-minded lazy criticism. It just gets so tired. there really is no reason to criticize Mike Vick today. He did not do anything great. he did not do anything bad. He did not win the game for his team but he also did nothing to lose the game for his team. It should be clearer as every day goes by that the problem with this team is the horrible play calling from Knapp, the weak leadership from Mora, and the propensity of McKay and Arthur to repeatedly bring in guys to this team who are softer than ice cream. The real problem for me is that the supporting case around the core guys Reeves brought to this team get weaker and weaker the more years McKay and Arthur have control of this team.

Matt,

You are right about the ‘98 Falcons. That was a special team. It was a shame we lost that Super Bowl.

But remember: In 1999, The Falcons went a terrible 5-11 with that team. in 2000, 4-12 with Chandler. And he had more interceptions than passes and didn’t reach the 3000 mark.

And people were ready to get rid of Chandler. That was three years after the Super Bowl… remember.

That next year, the Falcons went out and took Mike Vick in the 1st round. And took Alge with their second pick. And Chandler went down to injury. And the crowd applauded.

So Matt, this team isn’t an upgrade from the 1998 team. It is an upgrade from the 1999-2000 team.

I’m not doubting what vick has done in the past. I was thrilled with the guy when we first got him and after his first few years in the league. My concern is over the last couple of seasons he has shown zero progress as a passer. Yet some of you want to live in denial about that fact. I’m no vick hater, I would love to see the guy take us all the way. Some of you keep living in the past when it comes to vick, if we miss the playoffs this year that will be two consecutive seasons. I keep seeing vick’s all time record as a QB, which is good, being posted as some kind of evidence of vindication. However, that record doesn’t show the alarming trend of 9-12 in his last 21 starts. I’m not on here to slam mike vick but I am concerned about his lack of progress as a passer and the overall direction of this franchise. If we play offense in the next three games like we did today, our season will be down the drain. Im not a hater, but I am a realist, and I don’t like what I have seen from this team the last two years. If some of you want to live in denial and keep drinking the mike vick kool-aid then go ahead. I will be a realist and call it like I see it. And right now it is not looking to promising to me.

Injuries have hurt the Falcons, the last 2yrs, but we have reaped some benefit as a result. Losing Kerney has allowed us to discover PCarrington, and he has been outstanding. Maybe the injuries to Dunn and Norwood showed Knapp our FB can run as well as block. If Knapp uses Griffin as a runner it will definitely improve our rushing.

Has anyone noticed how our interior run DEF has dramatically improved with EHartwell at MLB? Anyone also notice how quickly JWilliams made his presence felt against the run and pass. When Kitna was inserted, TB tried taking advantage of him, but he was rock solid. Not one REC was able to get separation from him.

I stated in an earlier post, if our DEF stays agressive and plays to its potential, we will win out. It’s all up to Donatell. He went to his beloved soft zone DEF on TB’s last possession, and they marched down to the 2yd line in just 2mins. I guess a fool and his ways will never part. Anyway, GOOOOOO FALCONS!!!!!!

Well we won a game at a hostile site. I don’t care how bad Tampa seems, this Tampa team can be troublesome still.

Here are the problems with our offense. It is first, our receivers, who today actually played relatively well.

Second, has anyone noticed how we to move the ball well till we get into the red zone. Then we get stuck and have to throw the ball.

Why? Because the Falcons, have been created with smallish offensive linemen for the cut blocking schemes for the running game. In the red zone, not much space for that cute stuff. You have to manhandle the defensive lines, and our offensive line is incapable of doing that. Add to that 2 runners that are not power runners (our tailbacks) and we have a problem.

No it is not Vick. In fact this team moves very well till we get to the red zone.

Who is to blame?
Some of it has to be Kenn McKay and Jim Mora for sticking with this silly nonsense of Alex Gibbs style offenses. For that, we pay the price in the red zone.

Today we win because of defense that with return of Abraham, seem to have come back to life. I still have not seen Ed Hartwell make one play. I still say let Demorio Williams play. The guy is good.

I am afraid our smallish offensive line will get manhandled by Dallas next week.

So quit the nonsense about Vick and Vick hater stuff. Vick is a winner. Make a team around him that helps him out.

Arthur Blank is a great owner. Look at how he filled the holes on defense this year. Wish Kenn McKay and Mora had not let him down.

What really is the difference? It is just a different outward manifestation of the way that they look. The behavior of Mickey Mantle and JFK was no different than the behavior of the people and players of today. I think that the media just exposes so much more today than they ever used to. For example, could we have seen a crotch shot of Marilyn Monroe back in the day? Probably. BUt did we see one? No! Because the media coverage these days is so far more ridiculous than it was back then. That is why we get to see Britney Spears these days in all her shaved glory whereas we did not get to see the money shot on Marilyn. The celebrities and athletes these days can’t even wipe themselves the wrong way in the bathroom without someone either taking the picture of it or endlessly criticizing their poor technique in administering and flushing the toilet paper. It has all just become too ridiculous. I do not think that we are any dumber today than we ever used to be. I just think that there are much more media outlets to expose just how dumb we all are and how dumb we all have always been. The Yankee Clipper was always presented as the classiest man around. Only recently have we learned about some of the beatdowns emotionally and physically that he supposedly gave to that Marilyn dame. Martin Luther King would not have been as free these days to be the man he was on the issues he was important for because the media these days would have exposed and killed him for having a girl in every port. I just find it hard to believe that people were smarter 40 years ago, especially here in the south will all the nonsense that was going on down here 40, 50 years ago. From some of the stuff that is posted on here, it is obvious that things have not changed all that much. at least these days they are much smarter about the way that they hide their true racist feelings - except that is when they are hiding behind the safety of a keyboard

hey, mr. and mrs. long time falcons & braves fan. go do some reading:

The Missing Ring: How Bear Bryant and the 1966 Alabama Crimson Tide Were Denied College Football’s Most Elusive Prize

Author: Keith Dunnavant

In this book Mr. Dunnavant writes about the 1966 Alabama Crimson Tide coached by Bear Bryant and having arguably the best football team in the country. Despite having an undefeated season, they were not awarded the national championship.

The reason, according to Mr. Dunnavant was that the university got caught up in the integration battles of the time. Alabama had an all-white segregated team. And they were denied the championship. True? Quite possibly. Fair? Depends upon your point of view. You have to ask, if you were an African-American how would you have voted.

Yeah, we sure are dumber these days. Nah, we are just more long-winded. You liked us better when we spoke in incomplete sentences, didn’t you?

I have not been happy with the Falcons in a long time, after watching the game today I’m still feeling the same. There has been so much talk about who is to blame, who is not doing their job and do you know what I have come to realize? I think its the coaches that need to be changed!

I’m still not sold on Mike Vick but I know enough to say I don’t get paid to play football and couldn’t throw a ball half the distance he can. I does seem odd they won’t let him audible. If what is printed in the paper I am supposed to believe that Young couldn’t audible in San Francisco too. Well, I don’t buy it.

It would also seem that this is not a “West Coast” offense. What kind of an offense is it? Does it have a scheme? I don’t like it and I think it makes it hard for any QB to learn.

And the defense? We have some really good players on Defense. Though they don’t all have “impact” status they really seem to try hard. Now if we could only do something about the Coordinator… like maybe get rid of him. Come on, let’s be truthful here: he didn’t have a tough defense in Green Bay and he has a particularly “SOFT” mentality (what was it? 4 & 20?).

It all flows up to the Head Coach. No, I admit it: I don’t like Mora either. Not for any REAL reason; I just don’t like the way he looks - I guess he reminds me of someone else I don’t like but don’t remember. It may not seem like a justifiable reason but everyone has met someone they just don’t like. I’ve never Mora and don’t want to meet him. I just don’t like him or his looks….

In the end it would probably be best for change if the Falcons LOST games instead of WINNING them; but each of us want a win.

GO FALCONS!!

FALCONMAN, the size of our OLine is not the problem. Our OLine last yr was actually smaller, and we were near the top in redzone scoring last yr. The best running plays, in the redzone, tend to be quick hitters, which we seldom run. The best passing plays tend to be fades and swings to the RB’s, which we also seldom run.

If Knapp learned anything today, it’s that Griffin and McCrary can, and did, carry the rushing load. TB knew we would control the clock running the ball, and they still couldn’t stop our FB’s. TB hurt us, especially in the 1st half, running their FB and throwing to their backs. Who am I kidding, after 13 games, Knapp has yet to realize the value of throwing to our exceptionally fast and elusive RB’s.

We should throw at least 6-7 swing passes a game, minimum, to spread the DEF. Since teams don’t rush their DE’s allout, fearing Vick running, they blitz their LB’s and/or safeties to get pressure. Using the swing pass would instill constant fear of Norwood/Dunn catching one and going all the way. With DE’s maintaining containment, and LB’s/Safeties cheating outside to cover our RB’s, there should be fewer rushers and/or blitzers for our OLine to block. How could that not improve our rushing and passing attack?

It makes perfect sense to me, but obviously not to Knapp and maybe not to some of you. Any comments on my assessments?

KC, we do not have the WRs to run a WCO. The WRs are suppose to catch short passes and break tackles. Heck, our WRs have enough trouble trying to get separation. They have too many drops to be a WCO. They do not go after the ball to be a WCO. The thing we have to a guy that can be WC is Jenkins.

Well, I see we’ve assembled a multitude of idiots, morons, imbeciles and douchebags. You folks congratulate yourselves and the Foulcons, but remember the Foulcons aren’t going to any playoffs. In forty-one years, the Foulcons have never had two consecutive winning years. Celebrate that! Now the people who choose to take umbrage at this I will assume to be a member of one, or more, of the groups I mentioned.

OK, going to play “peace maker” between this war of the generations… It is not the “bling,” “the clothing,” or the “lifestyle” that people detest as much as the lack of simple decorum. Now I am the strongest supporter of Michael Vick there is in this town. And I have seen every great quarterback over the last 38 years that was worth a grain of salt. I have also seen the wannabes. What Mike did last week was something that a MAN just can not do… I understand why he did it, but he HAD to understand why he couldn’t do it! I hope you get what I mean by that statement… He played into their hands… To Bravesfan since 66, you missing the bigger point, playyers regardless of race will never be the players of the 50’s or 60’s. They will not be our neighbors or in our PTA’s like those players and families. I remember playing little league against the Aarons and youth football against the kids of some the Falcon players. They could come to the game and sit watch the kids play and people would let them be. Now after what happened to Vick and to a greater extent Chris Reitsma with his child last summer, it is not all of the players fault. It is very little of their fault, we have unrealistic expectations of our sport figures. We more importantly don’t have the proper expectations of ourselves.

Now I can get as personal as the best of them on these blogs… I make no bones of my hatred (yes I mean hate) of the University of Georgia and anything related to it… But I understand that is a flaw not a virtue… Still I never let it color my prospective of a persons talent… Herschel Walker was the 3 greatest college running back I ever saw… But I saw Walter Payton at Jackson State too! I saw Bo too, and he was magic… So what’s my point? Mike Vick has tools, he is not stupid, and any team that under the current principles of NFL salary system had not locked him up would have been foolish… Ask Tampa Bay about what not tying up Doug Williams or Steve Young did to them for 15 years?

So gentlemen, respect each other, buy the old guy a cup of joe, and you can buy him one of those caffine load energy drinks, pull out a picture of Beyonce and just smile… We’ll never it, but we can admire it…

But don’t get me wrong, I will enjoy the win tonight.

Right on long time falcon. The offense stink, stank, stunk! Vick butt-kissers pucker up. His performance WAS NOT a winning one! Game lost without defensive score. How about that trademark Vick EZ interception? Sweet, was it not? Offense failed to get out of its own way. Again! Vick makes terrible decisions as to when to hand off or keep ball. Several times areas were wide open had he kept the ball instead of handing off. Team uninspired, unmotivated and extremely unprepared. Crap, even Norn Van Brocklin squads were better prepared than these clods. With kudos to the defense (except for lousy secondary personnel). Well, maybe next year. Or 10 years from now! How DID my Jaguars do? A Southern team WITH pride!

I can certainly tell all of you Vick-haters that there has been NO OTHER TIME IN HISTORY, that the Falcons have been competitive for a playoff spot for 3 straight seasons. If Michael Vick were not our QB, we would be at the bottom of the division (3-10).

Vick’s record as a starter in Atlanta:

38-25-1; 2 of 3 seasons in playoffs; 2006 contenders

It makes me sick to think that we could have drafted the single season TD record holder LT from SD. But no, we got suckered into trading for that #1 pick and now we have a mediocre QB on a mediocre team while SD is piling up the wins. Now who got the best out of that deal? And I’m not bashing Vick, its just blatantly obvious who made the better decision. Oh well, you know the ole saying, “the more things change, the more they stay the same”. Who do the Falcons think they are fooling with this talk about playoffs? the only reason they won the last 2 games is the teams they played stink. The combined record is 6 and 20. That’s sad, and the Falcons were BARELY able to beat these two pathetic teams, if your weren’t for fluck plays. Dr.Jay. Good post. There are a couple of good posts on the blog. The rest is total bull**! I’ve been a fan since 1966. why can’t we all just appreciate the fact the our team won inspite of our offense which sputtered for most of the game. Justin G stepped up big today and that Williams kid looked good also. The D played a good game and they were primarily the reason we won. Hopefully from here on out the entire team will play as a unit, this includes the offense, defense, the special teams and especially our coaching staff.

We need the offense and special team from the Pitt and Cincy games and the defense from the previous two games. That should just about assure our ticket to the post season.

From this blog it seems like most people want the Falcons to lose so they can write about what Vick didn’t do. In most cities if a team win everyone is happy and move to the next game. This is crazy, people act like this city have won 5 superbowls. Their are to many Stats Greeks a win is a win who cares how many yards was made that game what counts is wins and losses.Thats why this is one of the worst sports city because when a team win people writes what the team didn’t do, but when they lose people write I told you. Lets just enjoy this win and see what will happen against the Cowboys and the playoff race. Go Falcons!!!!

Mr. Bear,

Sure he does. When he gets time in the pocket to throw and his receivers get separation from the coverage Brees throws nice, catchable balls to them. Just like Vick. When he gets pressure in his face and has to hurry his throws or throw off balance before his receivers can get separation, he overthrows or underthrows his receivers. Just like Vick.

Thankfully for Brees, his offensive coordinator lets him throw a greater variety of passes to take advantage of the weapons he has, unlike Knapp. Thankfully for Brees, his offensive coordinator doesn’t call plays that are designed for him to roll out of the pocket and wait for pressure to get in his face, unlike Knapp.

By Najeh Davenpoop

And yeah, Vick should be held accountable for the errors that are his fault. The same way Knapp should be held accountable for the errors that are his fault. Or Roddy White. Or Michael Jenkins. Or Ashley Lelie. The fumbles and the 2 interceptions against Cleveland? Definitely Vick’s fault. The first interception against Detroit? Definitely Vick’s fault. But Vick’s miscues are a drop in the bucket compared to the volumes of mistakes committed by Knapp and the wide receivers this season. Unfortunately, people who pay more attention to Vick’s hairstyle and jewelry and accent rather than the proceedings on the field fail to hold the right people accountable.

With the Cowboys losing last night one more playoff avenue became a possibility. The Falcons can really increase their chances of making the playoffs if they can beat the Cowboys and drop them into a tie with the Giants, Eagles and themselve at 8-6. Great win, although for a while, I thought, same old Falcons, looking flat in the 1st quarter & parts of the 2nd. Why do they come out that way every time? I also object to the play call on 3rd down in the 1st quarter, why are we throwing on 3rd & 1???? Dumb choice, oh wait, let me guess, Knapp “saw” something, right?? Does Mora EVER question him on his dubious decisions? That being said, Abraham finally reached the quarterback after watching him Rush every down & not getting there! Totally turned the game around. We’re going to have to activate the bruiser, Marlion Jackson, from the practice squad & if our O-line blocks for runs like they can, he should do fine. Hope Warrick & Jerious are going to be Ok…Finn would’ve caught that pass in the end zone, no question. That’s why I can’t totally get behind Lelie, too inconsistent. Wouldn’t resign him next year. Dallas will be good & p** after that loss, Falcons will have to play hard the ENTIRE 4 quarters, good luck, you are totally capable of winning this game, now show it!!

Hey Y’all:

The Falcons defense was up to snuff. They really started hitting in the second half. However, the offense needs to get little more polished, then I think we can take on anyone in the league. The defense, however, is getting stronger with people getting healthy again at the right time. Get ready Falcon fans for a serious push by our team into the playoff. This week we got the Cowboys. And I truly believe the Falcons wuill do their part and win. They need to do as usual and that is keep away from the negative newspapers articles like the AJC, TV, and radio. Stay to themselves, no partying, and study, intensely all your plays, and practice your craft, be it running, blocking, catching, tackling. Play your game on Saturday and make plays, baby. All of a sudden the falcons have a good chance to make the playoffs thanks to a superb performance by Drew Brees (wow, wish we could have gotten him). I bet the same people on this blog who are saying we are going to lose to Dallas are the same ones who probably said we were going to lose to Pitts & Cincy. The Saints exposed Dallas last night. Romo could not even get away from the rush where as Vick took 166 yards against the blitz from the Saints which kept us in the game until the end of the Fourth quarter. Anyone who knows when we play Tampa they always have the right defensive scheme against Vick because their olb are pretty quick to keep an angle on him. Every QB has decision faults or errors. Brees in San Diego was up and down. The Saints have a nice line and creative on offense. We will beat Dallas, Philli, and we will dust off Carolina. Usually Carolina for whatever reason we have them in pocket except for last year. What happened to the Great Manning, why he can’t use his feet sometimes. Why Romo didn’t get away from those blitzes last night. How could Brady let Miami of all teams shut them out. Maybe he should have ran some to change the game up.

You will not get away that for long in the NFL, especially in thep playoffs. Hope Dunn and Norwood are okay. Nice fill-in job by Griffith. Kudos to the defense, they should get the game ball. Welcome back Abe! If it weren’t for them I don’t what would have happened. A loss more than likely. Thatnks for earning at least part of your paychecks today rcvrs. If it wasn’t for Chicago’s defense they would be 3 - 10. When the offense is struggling the defense is suppose to get turnovers and make plays idiot!! They get paychecks to make plays sir.

The Falcons average 10 less pass attempts than any teams in the league! You can not expect any QB to effective throwing 16 to 20 total pass a game… Moreover, if you are a real FALCONS fan, you know that MV is nowhere near the worst throwing QB in this teams history… The oldsters remember Billy “Miss the side of the barn” Lothridge… And goodness, anybody remember that bunch of stiffs that Dan Henning put behind Van Note’s behind?

OK, most of you remember Terry Bradshaw the mad bomber, but I remember TB that Chuck Knoll didn’t trust throwing more 15 passes a game for 7 seasons before letting him loose…

Vick will be fine, he’s not the problem… I remember all of those shortsighted Tampa fans declaring Doug Williams a failure… He is also 3 years younger than Warren Moon was when he was finally set free to be all he could be…

No hater, just a realist.

Cowboys will be tough - Romo is really good QB. Far better than Mr. Vick has shown as of late.

Panthers? well, they want revenge and are filled with enough talent to serve it up

Philly? it’s cold in as hell in Philly and the dome boys better dress warm

keeping my fingers crossed but not droppin’ any bets from the heart…

HAHAHAHAHAHA Jeff Shultz…the falcons won and Vick completed over 60% of his passes. You got to have faith…but then again, you probably never believed in Santa Claus.

glad to see the Falcons finally win a couple of games that they should win. Not sure they are for real though. If they make it to the playoffs we can all count on an early exit. They only have one win this year against an opponent with a winning record. I think Mora is a brilliant coach, but not head coaching material. He is to much of a buddy to the players. I have mixed feelings about Vick. Knapp needs to go. He calls the Offense a west coast offense, but it is not the WC that I think of. No screens, shovel passes, or slants…but a college option that has been way over used… Atlanta has so much speed on their offense, but it isn’t used very wisely. And when Vick fumbles, or a reciever drops a pass the coaches defend them rather than coach them. Can we get a Reid, Cowher, or Parcells. How about Jimmy Johnson he loves Mike Vick, I am sure he would love the chance to coach him. Keep the spec teams coach and the rest of the bums need to go. If Vick still doesn’t live up to expectations after that, then we know he is not coachable and needs to go.

Go Birds!! I was at the Game yesterday, and I can tell you that the “D” showed up and no matter what Tampa Bays record is, they were in it to win and were playing until the John caused the fumble. As a fan who lives in Tampa and know the character of the team, TB wanted to win this game bad! Too bad the offense and “D” of the Falcons thought otherwise. Keep up the fight and lets put these haters where they belong!!!

Pop, you’re absolutely correct. It is a team game. The OFFENSE has the ball and the object is to score touchdowns. To put points on the board. The DEFENSE is to keep the other team from scoring! Now, when the OFFENSE cannot score and depends on the DEFENSE to bail out an ineffective OFFENSE —- those teams are severely crippled. THE OFFENSIVE OUTPUT OF THE BIRDS HAS BEEN PITIFUL AND WILL KEEP THEM FROM GOING TO THE BIG SHOW! It takes both a good OFFENSE scoring points and a good DEFENSIVE effort to keep the other team from scoring to take it to the next level. Duh!

And, by the way, Pop. The salary cap works against building a balanced team when one player’s salary is disproportionate and prevents acquiring quality players in skilled positions on both sides of the ball.

Saturday’s game means nothing to us, provided we win the last 2. If we beat Carolina and Eagles we’ll own tie-breaker over both.

People!People!People! Before 2001, this franchise had one memorable season. Our superbowl loss in ‘98. This franchise has never been considered a “winner”. Like it or not, it was not until Dan Reeves and company decided to draft Vick that Atlanta’s football expectations rose to above a .500 level. So all of you out there complaining and whinning get real.

Can someone answer a question for me? WHY do some of these people even call themselves Falcons fans? I don’t get it! Are they only on here to spew their very obvious hatred? Or are they fans as long as the quarterback is blond? Wow. Serious problems with some of these jerks. I am fearful of society at this point. Just watch the game, stupid.

The Falcons win, it is Tuesday, and there are not yet 200 comments. Let them lose to the Cowboys this weekend and I bet there will be at least 200 negative comments by Sunday night (a extra day of hate). I am like a lot of the other fans, if you do not support the TEAM or do not have football related constructive criticism, go form your own website and maintain an I hate MV7 blog.

Falcons win 2 of the last 3 and get in the wild card. Depending on the matchup they will may make it to the NFC championship. (The Saints AIN’T gonna beat the birds three straight times in one season, this is still the NFL)

To make the playoffs, the Falcons have to win the last 3 to finish at 10-6. Who really thinks Jim Mora can beat Parsells, Fox, & Reid all in a row. The best to hope for is 8-8 & wait for next year!
