Thank goodness
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
These are the Falcons I thought we were going to see when the season started. I’m glad the offense and defense finally played like they’re capable.
The Redskins aren’t a great team, but we’ve been losing those games, so I’m breathing a sigh of relief.
I thought we were going to see more of the same after we got down 14-0, but the Falcons finally showed some heart, the receivers caught the ball, Knapp actually mixed up the offensive plan, the defense got pressure on Campbell, and the secondary came up big with interceptions.
It was good to see Norwood get more carries.
I wasn’t happy about Vick continuing to run after he got hurt. I’m keeping my fingers crossed the hamstring injury isn’t serious.
Great job by the D to hold the Skins to 14 points and even better to see the offense capitalize on the interception.
It’s not going to be easy, but one down, four to go.
Keep it up, Falcons.

The difference was PROTECTION by the O Line and receivers making CATCHES. The Defense showed up, but they were playing against an INEXPERIENCED QB. Good win though. Go Falcs!

There was a lot to be impressed with today. Some big keys on offense were trying something new, receivers hanging on to the ball, better line play, and Vick’s leadership. Moving Alge around and putting Norwood out wide were good moves, and showed creativity. Maybe Jenkins and Lelie will amount to something after all. The line seems to be more in sync, giving Vick time to pass and creating some holes. All Jerious Norwood needs is a little crease, and he’s gone. Vick was impressive. After the week he had, to come back and play as well as he did showed something. He had a great touch, and most of his passes were right on target. More and more, you have to realize he’s NOT the problem, but a tough, talented playmaker.

I’m sorry but I will have to temper my excitement because washington is a bad football team. No portis, a rookie QB, and key injuries on defense. The falcons should have won this game, even though they tried their hardest to give it a way at the end. Lets see what happens in a few weeks when carolina and dallas come calling. Even if the falcons win a few more down the stretch, if I’m blank, mora must still make the playoffs to save his job. Under almost any circumstances I would fire knapp and Donatell at sesons end. Unless somehow we played in the superbowl, which aint gonna happen.

I am a Falcons fan. I was banking on we would lose the rest of our games this year. Folks we are not going to make the playoffs! If we lost every game on out, we would have at least got a pick in the top eight. Now we will finish 8-8 with the 15th pick in the draft where we will pick a WR from South West Utah State that can’t catch either.

Nice to see a win at last. However, can anyone explain the rationale behind having Vick run on a designed play after he got hurt? I’m glad they won and will continue to root for them but there is something seriously wrong in OZ.

This win was like a band-aid on a ruptured artery. Sure a win is what MORA needed to survive but this team isn’t playoff worthy and the worst thing that could happen is Mora and staff stays with a middle 1st round pick.
D. Hall has regressed - Crocker’s INT was the FIRST decent thing he has done. Losses to Carolina and Dallas should take care of things but folks don’t lose focus of the big picture - MORA and staff still have to go.

I’m with the Bird Babe on this one. Any win is a good win for this bunch, considering how they blew it against the Lions and Browns.
I find it interesting that in all the debate about whether responsibility for the Falcon’s problems rests with Vick or the receivers or the coaches, no one ever considers the offensive line. I think one important factor in the passing game’s ineffeciency is that Vick is frequently under pressure and thus feels the need to throw quickly or run for his life - even when he might not need to. This is not conducive to a consistent passing attack.
Second, concerning the usual suspects (Vick, receivers, coaches), I think the responsibilty rests with all parties. Vick can be extremely effective passing, but he’s never been very accurate. The receivers are what they are - they drop a lot of balls. And the coaches have to find a way to make all of that work, which isn’t easy.
Personally, I think the receivers will eventually shine. They’re all physically gifted and I think that’ll assert itself. What we need right now is a bit of patience and improved line play. If Vick consistently has time to throw, something tells me we’ll suddenly forget about problems in the passing game.
One interesting note: Vick’s best season as a passer so far was under Dan Reeves in 2002…

The Falcons can beat teams with worse quarterbacks than what they have.
Considering that Vick is among the worse quarterbacks in the NFL, you can expect the Falcons to go 6-10, or WORSE, every year.

Yes, the Falcons beat a bad team, but they have lost two other games this year against bad teams (Cleveland and detroit). They may not make the payoffs, their defensive backfield is terrible, and they aren’t consistent. That said, it’s a mental game, and this win could be a big confidence builder. Whether mora goes or not, it’s good to know the Falcons have at least some players with some stones.

2002 playoffs: 1-1

Finally!!!! Damn! These MF finally showed some “positive’ character today. I saw the fire in them right from the start, they were ready and relaxed right from kick-off. When we went down 14 points early I was about to start up the same ole Falcons song and write them off until September of 2007. But the guys played with heart and turned it around, lets see if they can do this over the next 4 weeks.
Ive been telling every one since the preseason that J-wood is something speacial and today he supported my predictions. He would have been a 1400 yard rusher this season if he was not playing behind Warrick Dunn.
Despite the win, our recievers are still bootie, including Alge. Keith Brooking is the most over rated LB in the history of the game. He is marginal, but definitely not worth of 5 pro-bowls that he has been allowed to participate in.
Well…Well….:( :( The Falcons turned it around today, but me and newtothegame have hit a bump in the road. Hopefully its only a bump.To sum up my feelings, I will keep it simple.

Instead of everyone talking about them we were piling on Mike Vick. Im still skeptical we will make the playoffs, but offense and defense played well. Way to go Falcons. I’m extremely happy with the defense and particular Chris Crooker. I had suggested we trade him for a better safety but the interception in the second half was definately a great play from him. Hopefully, he continues on this path. Norwood is the man. I’m glad we won, but I was definitely not impressed. Ladell Betts ran for a career high 155 yards, and Washington basically ran the exact same stretch run play every time with the Falcons’ D unable to adjust. Once again, every time we blitzed we got great pressure and forced Campbell into mistakes, and every time we rushed 4 and dropped the rest in zone coverage we gave up big pass plays. I am amazed that at this point in the season, Donatell doesn’t realize this yet. Once again, dropped passes were a problem, although to the receivers’ credit they did a much better job today. Vick and Crumpler played nice games, and for a change guys came up with key plays when they mattered — the 46 yard pass to Crumpler, the 22 yard pass to Jenkins, the 69 yard run by Norwood and the interception by Chauncey Davis all came at key times and were very clutch. Still though… 3 dropped passes, a career day for a backup RB, a hamstring injury for Vick and a touchdown pass allowed despite double coverage on Santana Moss are not good signs for the Falcons going forward. There are still major problems on this team that need to be fixed before we play Dallas and Carolina. I hope these guys realize that they just beat a pretty bad team, and that they are still going to have to take their play to the next level if they want to make a serious playoff run.
Please can the racism. It is idiotic, irrelevant, and makes you look stupid.

If he was a “6-10” guy it would take him 6+ seasons to win 39 games. The 69 games equal 4+ seasons. If we win next week for his 40th win in these 4+ years he is in fact more like a 10-6 guy.

Vick didn’t win this game for us. The FALCONS won! Just like Vick didn’t lose any of the games.
Vick played his typical game. He played the same way with the same intensity. The difference, though, is that he got help this game. The receivers caught the ball. The offensive line blocked OK (not great.) And the defense rattled their QB with some heat.
Now, it was Jason Campbell, a rookie. He was easily rattled. But Jason will be a great QB one day.
Also the Redskins’ TE and RBs kept dropping passes.
But it was a good game, nonetheless. Hopefully, Mike Vick can get some help again next week.

WHAT A FARCE- Your knowledge of the game of football is an accurate reflection of your common sense. You have very little of both. Compare Michael Vick’s passing stats this season, and his overall winning percentage with ANY other QB in the NFL and maybe you will see what I am talking about.
LARRY- Funny you should mention where Michael Vick and Jason Campbell went to college. Campbell led Auburn to an undefeated Championship season his senior year, and Vick took then no name Virginia Tech to the National Title game. Compare Vick’s record as a starter with Manning’s, Brady’s, and Romo’s and see what you get. FOUR Great Quarterbacks who know how to win games. Finally, this Falcons’ Forum sure does a good job of exposing how some of the residents of this city REALLY feel about their African-American neighbors. I am a young, college-educated Black male, and I am headed to law school. I have two earrings, a Fraternity Brand, and a tatoo. If you disrepect Michael Vick and Jason Campbell the way you did, I am curious as to how you would react to me, or other professional Black men like me who you will inevitably come in contact with now and in the future.

Hey Michael:
I am not the one who tried to insult any one with racist invective. In fact, some so-called genius decided to misappropiate my name and use it to put vile on this post. Using my wits, I have truly p** these ignorant, racist pigs off to the point that they are worried that their true, cowardly selves are exposed to everyone in Atlanta. These, and many others are what I call true pieces of work. It is people like these that aren’t true Atlantans or even true Americans.
Falcons fans: fight these morons with your wits. The response to my posts (and many others) show what kind of people “support” our team: many true-blue fans, some fair-weather fans, and some fans who belong in the ninth circle of hell. Pray for them, because their time is coming VERY soon.
I don’t condone racism PERIOD; whether it be from a black person, a white person, or any other color or nationality. Some of these ignorant fools only betray their true selves with their comments about Vick, Tony Romo, etc.
When Vick has a bad game, then he deserves constructive criticism. When Vick has a good game, he deserves constructive accolades, just like any other NFL quarterback. There’s no need to bring color in the conversation, unless you are just ignorant. Unfortunately, many of these ignorant people just make matters worse. But, that’s the way ball bounces.
So, GO Falcons! Win or lose, I (and other good Atlanta souls) will support you. We will criticize you when you mess up, but we will support you.

This is the worst sports message board I have ever seen in my life. Every single blog resorts to silly and childish name calling. There is racism coming from both sides. I have been a regular member of the hawks message board for over a year and we have a bunch of insightful and intelligent guys, both black and white. We sometimes have heated discussions and many disagreements but it never turns into racism or name calling. I will never visit a falcons blog again and I sincerely hope you people grow up some day.

I don’t think that you can be real fan of a team and actively root against them to lose just so coaches will be fired or the team will get a better draft pick. Big picture or not, if your body can actually feel like you want the team to lose, you probably aren’t a real fan in the firt place.
This game was a good win. It doesn’t mean all the problems will be solved or that we’ll make the playoffs, but it’s still a good win, and, as a fan, it made me happy. All those who want the coaching staff gone (and I’m pretty much still with ya), don’t worry. One game won’t change that either. As for people who care more about our draft pick, whatever. The only thing that really matters is what the team does on the field right now.

The Falcons “got the stuff”???? LMAO This is why sports fans in Atlanta are so completely amusing….ARE YOU BLIND?? The Falcons SUCK! They beat a sorry-a* (one of the 4 worst teams in the NFL) Redskins team, spot the 14 points, let up 155 yards rushing to a lousy NFL Running Back who coming into the game had 255 yards rushing in 11 games, had 9 less first downs and a QB that can barely pass for 100 yards on his best day….KEEP IT COMING - LOL You Atlanta fans are cute.

BIRD BABE, you should be ashamed of yourself for allowing such disgraceful individuals to unleash their personal hatred and bigatry on a Falcons fan forum. Instead of gameplans and discussing offense and defense, peoples discussions on here are about racism and all of you above are pathetic, ill advised hypocrits who use fan blogs to releave their inner thoughts. This will be my last visit….ohhh yeahhh…the falcons…good game, keep it up

* GREAT GAME, BIRDS! I’m pleased that they finally came together as a team. It’s a shame, A REAL SHAME, that the owner, coaches and quarterback waited until after they had lost four games to have PRAYER MEETING with some of these UNDERACHIEVERS for their LACKLUSTER play! My guess is that had their been more intensity from the top to the bottom of this organization, we might have been spared this four game slide. But, again, who knows? Congratulations and Adios!*

LYNNE, I couldn’t agree with you more. We must all realize that these negative, racists comments aren’t coming from Falcons fans. MVick’s presence prevents them from identifing with the team. They desperately want the Falcons to lose because of their hatred of Vick.
Allow me to show you intelligent Falcons fans what I am talking about. After each of the last 4 losses, these morons immediately start posting about how Vick can’t read DEF’s, he’s too short, he can’t pass, he needs to play REC or RB, etc. After todays win, and Vicks outstanding performance, especially his pinpoint passing, all they can come up with are references to herpes, or earrings. There hasn’t been a single post referencing one of the above mentioned issues. Just stupid, ignorant inuendos that helps them justify their racially inspired hatred.
These are deprived, undeciplined childlike individuals that are throwing the equivalent of a temper tantrum. Just leave them to themselves. Much like leaving a severely retarded individual to wallow in his/her on excrement, which is punishment enough.

Let’s see, the Redskins beat Dallas, Jax and Carolina at home. It would have been easy for the Falcons to fold up their tents after falling behind 14 - zip. Anytime you can win a game on the road, its a good win. How many would rather have Grossman as their pocket qb now?

I was at FedEx field today and I can tell you that the Falcons showed a lot of heart in this game. Sure the Redskins aren’t great, but the way Atlanta kept their composure and came back (props to the receivers for stepping up when needed, now keep it consistent) showed the kind of character needed to win in this league.
Vick should be fine for next week’s game. If not, then everyone can brag about how “great” Schaub is.
The Skins fans were in complete awe of Vick and I received so many comments about how they wished they had Vick instead. Atlanta fans should appreciate him while they can.

Well stated Ken! Most of these idiots are probably teenagers anyway and mommy lets them have a computer in their room. No one who considers themselves even remotely intelligent would spew the kind of sick comments being made on these blogs. The fact that VICK and the Falcons won today must be killing them. No worry, they will eventually be consumed by their hatred and returned to the devil that spawned them.
In any event, for those making light of the fact that the Falcons beat the Redskins, record notwithstanding, they are still a PRO FOOTBALL TEAM! Those same Redskins beat the Panthers last week. Just be happy for the win no matter who it was against. One game at a time. 6-6 is a lot better than 5-7. The Falcons could have just cashed it in when they fell behind 14-0, BUT THEY DIDN’T! Given the tumultuous week the team has gone through, It showed a lot of character that they were able to score 24 unanswered points. Like many of the bloggers, I’m a native and support the birds win or lose. Lynne you shouldn’t be surprised at these blogs turning in to a hate filled tirade and vilification of Mike Vick. Some of theses amoebas are still pizzed about the LOSING the civil war where the confederates got their rebel azzes kicked up and down the mason dixie line like a $2.00 whore. LMAO!!!!!

My resume speaks for itself. Michael Vick’s does too. I have been making people like you look silly all my life, and I will continue to do so as an attorney. I hope the Falcons win out and do the same. Real Manhood is defined by courage, INDIVIDUALITY, and unselfish living. Your ignorance, and insecurities are BEAUTIFULLY illustrated everytime you write on this blog….GO FALCONS AND GO VICK!!!!
P.S. For the sake of trying to keep this blog ON topic, I neglected to give you some examples to negate your claim that there are no great Presidents, CEOs, Engineers, Architects,Scientist, or Heart Surgeons with tatoos or earrings. The reason is simple. Your problem isn’t with the ink or the jewelry, your problem is with the color of the skin that they are on. If you want examples of African-Americans who are leaders in these fields I will happily email them to you.

LARRY, what would an anal retentive like yourself know about the qualities of being a man? And to answer your narrow minded question, a large # of great CEO’s, engineers, architects, scientist, surgeons, etc have tatoos. Many of these individuals are members of fraternities and they often wear tatoos of their frats insignia. But of course, you were too stupid to realize something like that when you made that moronic statement.
Does anyone notice the consistency with which these morons express their lack of comprehension? And so far, not one of these inbred anal retentives has made a single comment about Vicks performance. Vick showed everyone what he can pass with the best of them when given the time an opportunity.
Bottom line, morons like LARRY AND WHAT A FART, to name a few, are filled with self-lothing. They have convinced themselves, against all reality, they are somehow superior to someone else. In reality, they cannot see anything within themselves that’s remotely superior to anything. So they focus on the perceived, or self-created, inferiority of selected others. These are truely bottom feeders and represent what is wrong with the human spirit.
Unfortunately, they will never be able to stop hating. Every minute of every day, they are confronted with the reality that so many of those they claim are inferior, and profess to hate, are so far ahead of them socially, politically and, most importantly, economically. Michael Vick, and the city of Atlanta, has become the simbol of their unforfilled existence.

This is crazy! The hate is so fierce that people are saying stuff unreasonable. Schaub at QB, does he throw a magic ball with stickum on it? Can he avoid the normal jailbreak at the line? Larry - I don’t know if I can name too many great presidents. Most of the politicians that are clean cut and smile in your face a robbing us blind. I think I’ll trust Dwayne at the bike shop with all the tattoos bofore I trust the Prez and the junk bond CEO’s giving themselves millin dollar raises. tetuwacanda denica mutamba - Not Al and Jesse. I know you are upset but Al was caught on tape arranging a drug deal between undercover Feds posing as Columbian drug lords and local drug dealers in NYC. Bottom line, the problem is OL, WR, and our CB’s. Fix the OL and WR problem then judge Vick. Everyone is looking at the NE game and think that Schaub is the better QB. I thought the same thing with Doug Johnson. He looked so much better than Vick and I thought he should be the starter, then it happened, the rest is history. Is Schaub a Brady or a Johnson——YOU DON’T KNOW! No other Atlanta QB has received the hater’s as Vick and he has the best record here ever!

These Birds should show up more often. Defense got smacked around some in that 1st, but put the brakes on nicely after that (WELCOME BACK ABRAHAM!). It was nice to see pressure on the QB. The young guns, Boley, Davis, and Mallard showed up big-time today, even if it was the Deadskins. We lost games like this to teams this incapable before. They should have sat Vick down for more than a snap. What if that hamstring gave? Dumb. Even though the rcvrs got ‘em in the endzone, they were still too many drops IMO. I don’t get that. They hung in there though. At least for a week I can stop thinking about us losing. Kudos to Dunn, Norwood and Crump. Nice to see teammates helping MV7 out. Like I’ve always said, one man doesn’t break OR make a team. Way to go TEAM.
Now just keep it up, PLEASE!!

What a nice win. One game at a time. Too bad we lost some games that we should have won. Hopefully we can get after each team like we did after the first quarter of this game. I hope we can see more of Norwood in the games to come. It’s amazing how poised Vick was when he had protection. Let’s hope the team can keep this up for the rest of the season. The one thing that I would want early for Christmas—that we continue to have plenty of blitz packages for the pass AND run plays. And also that we eliminate the soft zones defense we continually get burned on.

From the washington post:
His greatest highlight came early in the second half, when he decided to call a play himself. With the Falcons trailing, 14-10, early in the third quarter, Vick heard a play come through his headset that hardly appealed to him. The Atlanta coaches wanted a passing play, and they gave Vick three possible receivers as targets.
“[Vick] wanted to throw to someone else,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins and Vick agreed to create their own play: Jenkins would run 22 yards down the field and into the end zone, and Vick would look for him. And true to Vick’s plan, the quarterback dropped back and threw a touchdown pass to a wide-open receiver nobody expected to see in the end zone — not even the Atlanta coaches. The play gave the Falcons a lead they held until the end of the game.
“Michael wasn’t even in the read on that play,” said Vick, still sweating 30 minutes after the game while wearing a striped suit and diamond earrings. “Sometimes you have to overcome coaching, you know. Nobody on the field knew what we were going to do except for me and [Jenkins].”

Hell Yeah That felt good to win—even it was the lowly Redskins. I saw a Falcon team that came within a couple of inches of being dismantled, only to shine in all the right places. The offensive line protected, the receivers caught (for the most part—we are still getting over the drop flu), Vick gave it all again, and Abraham and Milloy played great as did most of the D.You See that could have been the the Bucs, Cowboys, Panthers, or Eagles and we would have won clicking like we did. I pray thats what we get in Tampa next week—-Great come from behind win Falcons

It was the Redskins ok? Atlanta is mediocre at best and they beat an even more mediocre team. Neither team is good much less great. Atlanta will be under 500 as long as Vick s the qb. That is a shame, Schaub deserves better and next year wneh he leads a team to the playoffs you will all be saying why didnt Atl keep him instead of inconsistant Vick.

There has been an academic study done regarding the Wonderlic tests given to every NFL draftee. It found no correlation among IQ and performance for NFL quarterbacks. All NFL quarterbacks have the mental capacity to play the position. Regarding Vick, I question some of the intangibles needed, such as poise,(lost it with the finger deal),work ethic, (putting in the time and effort neccessary to learn the position inside and out), and the ability to inspire his teammates to play at the peak of their ability, ( all of his receivers have been excellant in the past).

These teams aren’t as far away (skill level) as they were years ago. These teams are becoming better by the year I mean look at the Titans, would be 6 -6 right now if they didn’t blow the 19 point lead to Baltimore so us as fans have got to stay by our ball club especially when we are STILL IN THE MIX!!! Atlanta fans are only with you when you are on top or winning and when you are losing like you said msteven, ITS CRAZY, GET SOME HEART FANS, I’M BLAMING ALL OF US FANS FOR NOT SUPPORTING WHAT SOME OF US THINK IS NOT A TEAM BUT IT IS STILL OUR TEAM THAT REPS ATLANTA EVERY SUNDAY, AND AS YOU SEE THEY CAN’T DO IT BY THEMSELVES AND ITS SAD WHEN THEY COME BACK HOME, YA’LL MAKE EM FEEL LIKE THEY ARE AWAY REGARDLESS OF WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE FIELD. And by the way football fans, did you all hear about Justin Gatlin trying out for the Houston Texas, get this on note, DUDE RAN A 3.8 40, NOW THAT IS SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT!!!!!!!!

Let’s look at the facts. When the play calling is goodand the recievers catch the football, Vick is brilliant. He showed us against two good AFC defenses what he could do if given the opportunity. Let’s compare the top QB’s.
Manning- Has had the same OC for at least 5 years and recievers that catch the ball. Not Vick
Brady- Has a simular situation to Manning. Vick doesn’t
Mcnabb- Also simular.
It is not Vick who is inconsistent it is his organization. Vick did not and does not have the supporting cast that the other top QB’s have. Brett Farve is going through the same thing. Brett doesn’t have the team he had when he went to those superbowls and it shows. Does it mean that Brett Sucks? I would say no, but his numbers certainly do.
Hear’s the fear. The fear is that Vick showed us against Cinci and Pitsburg that he can be a 300yd passer. Once that becaomes a consistent performance there will be no one to match his skill making him the best ever. Manning and Brady and who ever else can pass very well, but they will NEVER be able to move like Vick. Calling them “Pure Passers” is a nice way of saying that that’s all they can do. Vick has the potential to be the total package.

The Falcons beat a 4 and 8 team and had to come from 14 down to do it. Vick was 8 for 16 with 122 yards passing good numbers for a middle school quarterback big freakin whoop! Vick and the team STILL SUCK! He will never be consistent he just dosent have the makeup and character.

I love Shockley and I would rather see him in there than MV. We’ve seen the best that Vick can be (Average at best), and Shockley is a helluva lot smarter than Vick. That is a fact.

We’ve got some fickle fans here. I think there’s been too many northern transplants down here, because too many seem to be misereable all the time and grumble about everything. Vick’s been fine this season. He played well enough to beat NO Both times—if the recievers make a couple of catches and the O line gave him a bit more time. I can’t believe so many people think Schaub should start over Vick…crazy, isn’t he 0-2 as a starter. Vick was 1-1 as a backup, right? They said the same thing about Doug Johnson—how’d that turn out? We ought to trade Schuab for a great corner of WR. I like Schuab, but he’s not as good as some of you think.

49ER fan you are an idiot and a racist, Tonya you are the blind being led by the blind. Of the two quarterbacks sitting on the bench while our starter has a 25th ranked passer rating (up from 37th last week) WOW! I along with most other people I discuss this with including blacks and whites want to see Shockley be the starter because we know he would be better. NOT BECAUSE OF HIS RACE OR HOW MUCH MONEY HE MAKES! 49er fan you said you were not going to comment on this blog and then made an ignorant, racist statement like that PLEASE STAY TRUE TO YOUR WORD AND DONT COMMENT IF YOU CANT DO ANY BETTER THAN THAT!

Rex grosman threw for 34 yards I think, and they won. He’s terrible, and Vick is way better, but the Bears are 10-2. Why, Rex is a bad QB on a great team. I’m not convinced Vick is great, but he’s good, and on an AVERAGE TEAM How do I know this? Look at their record when he doesnt’ play.

This Is the Same Vick Now!!! Michael Vick Although his stay in Blacksburg was relatively brief, Michael Vick’s impact on the Virginia Tech football program figures to be long-lasting.
During the mercurial quarterback’s two seasons under center, the Hokies enjoyed unprecedented success. Tech posted back-to-back 11-1 seasons, appeared in a national championship game and finished with its highest-ever national rankings. The two-year period produced sky-rocketing ticket sales, increased contributions and an incredible flurry of media exposure that extended from coast-to-coast. All but two of Vick’s games at Tech were televised. Every home game of his career was played before a sellout crowd.
Vick didn’t create all the success and exposure single-handedly. He had plenty of help. But every time he took the field, he generated the type of excitement that comes with special players.
Tech’s coaches realized early-on that Vick was a special player. However, it wasn’t until the 1999 season that they found out just how special he would be.
Coach Frank Beamer promised to redshirt Vick during his first year at Tech and held to that promise during a rash of injuries at quarterback early in the 1998 season. Bolstered by the redshirt season, the 6-1, 207-pound left-hander from Newport News, Va., made the most anticipated debut in school history when the Hokies opened their 1999 season against James Madison.
In his first collegiate game, Vick dazzled the fans with three touchdown runs in just over a quarter of play. The last of those three scores ended with a national highlight reel flip into the end zone. It was the first of many highlights for the young quarterback.
Vick accounted for five first-half touchdowns in a win at Rutgers. He stunned West Virginia with his last-minute heroics to set up a game-winning field goal. His 75-yard touchdown run against Temple was shown coast-to-coast. He accounted for four more touchdowns and 366 yards of offense in the regular-season finale against Boston College.
Vick’s reputation was building. On Jan. 3, 2000, he captivated a national audience with a mesmerizing performance against No. 1 Florida State in the national championship game. Vick accounted for 322 yards of offense against the Seminoles’ vaunted defense, and even though FSU came on to win the game in the final quarter, he was the talk of a nation. In the blink of an eye, Michael Vick became a household name.
The honors rolled in. Vick won an ESPY as the nation’s top college player. He was awarded the first-ever Archie Griffin Award as the nation’s most valuable player in college football. He finished third in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy and second in the voting for The Associated Press Player of the Year. He was named first-team All-America by The Sporting News and second team by the AP.
By the time his sophomore season began, Vick had appeared on practically every preseason magazine cover and been touted as a Heisman favorite. Early on, he filled the highlights again with his quick feet and powerful arm. There was an amazing 82-yard touchdown run at Boston College and a pair of long TD passes against West Virginia. As the season progressed, however, swarming defenses and a troublesome high ankle sprain began to take their toll.
Vick bounced back from six sacks to ice Tech’s first win at Syracuse since 1986 with a 55-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes remaining. A week later against Pittsburgh, he was knocked out of the game in the second quarter. The Hokies went on to win that game, but the following week, with Vick limited to 19 plays off the bench, Tech suffered its lone loss of the 2000 season at Miami.
After starting a home victory against Virginia, Vick returned to form in the Toyota Gator Bowl, helping the Hokies to a 41-20 victory over Clemson and gaining MVP honors in the process. It would be his last game in a Tech uniform.
In early January, the Tech star announced his intentions to turn pro during a press conference at the Hampton Road’s Boys and Girls Club near his old neighborhood. On that day he assured Tech fans he would “always be a Hokie.”
On Apr. 21, Hokie fans everywhere couldn’t have been prouder when Vick was named the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NFL draft.

where would we be if we had beaten the Lions and Browns? Four games left and it looks like 9, possibly even 8 wins gets us a wild card, but we must beat the Panthers in 3 weeks to own the tiebreaker- granted we take care of business in the other games. Please Mora give Norwood more carries! He is such a talent not to take more advantage of.

People who truly know about football know what type of player Mike Vick truly is. HE WINS GAMES..PERIOD!! Just image if he had at least ONE pro bowl receiver along with Alge and an O-line that could actually pas block like every other O-line in the league!!
Haters and racists, Mike Vick will never be a lame duck statue standing in the pocket so GET OVER IT!! Just like Peyton Manning will NEVER rush for over 30 yds in a single game!! If Peyton is getting sacked 3 or 4 times a game, it’s the O-line’s fault…if Mike Vick gets sacked ONCE, IT’S HIS FAULT!!
You people are IGNORANT A-HOLES!! I don’t think most of you even watch the falcons play you just look at Vick’s stats the next day…lol

Perry, I will ask you to read this very slowly so you will understand it. I stated that I wanted Shockley to be the starter NOT Schaub. I never said nor do I think that Schaub is the next Tom Brady. Now if you cant read this and comprehend it please have someone read it and explain it to you or write it for you in big block letters with a purple crayon LOL!. And yes folks STATS DO MEAN SOMETHING JUST LOOK AT THE STATS AND THE FALCONS RECORD THE LAST 2 YEARS! PI$$ poor stats and PI$$ poor records go hand and hand! But maybe you cant comprehend that either? Some of you folks said that the line blocked well and the recievers didnt have drops yesterday which is why Vick played good. Again people he was 8 for 16 with 122 yards is that good? As I have stated before open your eyes remove your shroud of blackness and BELIEVE what your eyes are seeing! The NFL ranks the top 30 in 2 categories for quarterbacks and this week after his “stellar preformance” he is 22nd and 25th think what you want but facts are facts! He is not getting the job done and the Falcons are not going to make the playoffs again this year!

That’s right ‘Truth’, the guy is just fun to watch. You know what I liked yesterday, was down 14, they didn’t panic, and they didn’t change their game plan. When everyone thought they should start throwing, the kept running, and when that was working, they started passing. They didn’t change the game plan, and it worked. And gues what, that running game, absent the last few weeks, is what bailed their butts out of a big hole. Also, on one drive, Vick hit a wide open Lelie, who dropped it. Next play, on 3rd down, he hit him again for a first down catch. That stuck out to me as much as anything yesterday—I hope it did to Lelie. And the touchdown to Jenkins being an ad-lib.

The manner and resilence of Falcons in their win against Skins was commendable and long overdue..although it’s doubtful they can bring this level forward with any consistentency. The example being how easily they could’ve lost this Redskins game by stupidity and cockiness. Three minutes remaining: Falcons up 10 points, an obvious sack on 4th down would’ve given the Falcons an opportunity to run out the clock…but this same defensive sack and stupid face mask penalty turned that chance into a 15 yard 1st down for the skins…all the while the Falcons are over on the sidelines back-slapping themselves. Hey guys…there’s still time on the clock and it ain’t over yet! A few good plays and the skins would’ve been right back in it. This Falcons team will not succeed or make any playoff games until they develop a killer instinct and play consistentlt with fire and intelligence for all of the 60 minutes. Good game Falcons, but the mark of a good team is to get better each week and improve your record, your team and your consistency. Just look at Dallas.

Hey Y’all.
Yeah our Atlanta Falcons looked pretty good yesterday against the Redskins. I know this will continue as long as they rally around each other and keep away from reading the press, looking at and reading negative sport commentaries, studying their plays, and staying away from drinking and partying until after the season. This is war man. The Falcons against them and everybody else. With the wins will come all of the rewards but right now pain and hard work. NO PAIN, NO GlORY!!!!! They have to be into themselves, study their game plan and implement their game plan on Sundays with TENACITY and ANGER. We know the end result if we don’t: the negative AJC sportswriters (i.e., Scultz, MOORE, etc.) It doesn’t matter, they are even negative when we win. Until they are out of this city, we must put up with them. But that another story. The FALCONS, however, must DO the things the Falcons do: Run, Cut Block (legally), and pass. This what we do. There is no time to change, but to do it better and better each game. Stay to yourselves FALCONS. It is you against the world. Keep away from the newspapers, especially the AJC, and just play football. In fact, if you are doing right you should’t be readin this. However, if you are, get busy and prepare yourselves to kick some BUTT!!! We FAlCON fans are behind you. You do your job and us FALCON fans will do our. WE WILL RAISE THE ROOF OFF THE MOTHER F__CKER!!!!! AND THAT AIN”T NO JOKE. LET”s US ALL GET BUSY!!!!!

Good win Falcons!! Keep playing with a lion’s heart. My concern on the fourth and short yardage plays. Is it possible to just put a running back under center? Is that a legal formation? After all, the defense and everyone else is expecting a qb sneak. So why not put a rb there with stronger legs to get a better push or put Grady Jackson in on the side that QB is to lunge for the yardage. I hope this blog get attention from the coaching staff.

Down with, What I want is not a perfect season because I know that that has only happened once and probalbly never will again. However I would like to have my hometown team reach the playoffs more than 3 times every 40 years. I have been behind this team since thier first game through thick and thin. I have seen the type player and coaching mentality that creates losing seasons way too damn many times and what we have now is as bad or worse than we have had in 37 of those 40 years. No its not all Vicks fault but the play starts when the QB gets the snap and too many times something foolish happens once he gets the ball. Yes he has his flashes of good play (mainly when he runs) but only about 25% of the time if that does he make the proper decision when under pressure. Some games he gives the other team field position or scores more than producing scores and field position for the Falcons we all see it some of the fans just dont want to believe what they see. I have seen DJ play at every level and he has a Quarterbacks head on his shoulders. His father is a great coach and obviously taught the young man that being an athlete is only about 65% of what it takes to be a Quarterback and team leader and the young Shockley grasped it and still retains it. I really dont think that drafting him was an afterthought I believe the front office realizes that with Vick you get a guy who is fast, can run better than anyone they have seen from the Quarterback position which leaves him prone to injury and a short stent in the NFL but has less than desireable pasing skills. Therefore they stole a realitivley unknown QB in Shockley knowing he would someday be the leader of this team. That being said and Vick being in his 6th season in the NFL and he appears to be getting worse instead of better I think Shockleys time has come. It may be a couple of seasons early for DJ but when Schaub goes to another team to be a starter Dj will get a chance soon and he will never let it go!

Oh man,
I look back into this blog and it becomes a literal cesspool of racial comments and folks still blasting Vick. It is also about people who don’t know that we really have a good thing here, and that we are still in the thick of this playoff hunt. If we win 3 of the last 4 games, we will more than likely, play in a playoff game.
But I have been into other team’s blogs and it has been a relief being a Falcon fan. But we have a lot to learn from some of these fans.
Take Philly fans, for instance. Philly is 5-6. They look terrible. But they absolutely LOVE Donovan McNabb. And they drill those silly cretins who even ATTEMPT to dog him or his play. I was expecting to hear all of those “black qb” jokes and quips, but they just talked about his game and that even when he was playing and looking bad, it was due to his O-line and bad receivers, etc. Sounds familiar?
(McNabb is hurt right now, so he’s not playing.)
Oh, and there was one guy that even talked about trying to acquire Schaub for the Eagles. It was almost laughable to watch the entries about Schaub being ‘unproven’ and just ‘all-hype’. But some of us Falcon fans think that he’s the second coming. And they laugh at us.
(Oh, and by the way… Eagles fans absolutely HATE the Falcons! They are ravagely aggressive against us, and they want to ruin our chances of making the playoffs so bad they could just scream!)
But then, I looked into some Tampa Bay Buccaneer blogs. See, the Bucs are 3-9. They also hate the Falcons. But they are ready to let their head coach go. They blame Gradkowski for their losses, but they are steaming mad at Michael Clayton and his dropped passes. They are ready to clean house, and they are waiting for Chris Simms to come back, but they want a veteran to be his backup, or for him to back up a veteran.
They will give their right arm for Vick. Mike Vick is actually on their radar. They think if he can win with Atlanta, he could go even farther with the Bucs.
Oh, and speaking of people who just want Vick right now, the Raiders are just begging for him. Oakland is 2-10. They are done. They believe that they have the worst coaching staff in the NFL, but they think that they need a playmaker.
I think that a Vick trade to Oakland would be just terrific for the Raiders. Oakland will just love Vick and his running style. He will take that team so far…
But it will be disastrous for the Falcons to get rid of Vick.

Hey I played a lot of sand lot foot ball over the years. Now at 53, I can still out run all of the kids in my neighborhood and out catch the receivers of the Falcons. Probably out run them as well. Hey coach give me a tryout. It’s not Mike Vick’s fault that his receivers can’t catch.

This is an article from the Washington post…..
Why doesn’t the AJC write articles like this on the home team?
Nothing has changed, Atlanta Falcons players said. Love him or hate him, this is the same Michael Vick.
One week, he lifts each middle finger to Atlanta fans while walking off the field because he’s bitter after rushing for 166 yards and still losing a fourth consecutive game. The next week, he ignores an injury, improvises his team’s best plays and berates teammates on the sideline, initiating a come-from-behind, 24-14 win over the Redskins.
This is the bargain Michael Vick demands: To play his best, he must express himself without a filter.
Eight days after Vick’s famous middle fingers cost him constant criticism and a $10,000 fine, the quarterback played with unchecked emotion again — but to drastically different results. Vick passed for two touchdowns and ran for 59 yards, sometimes ignoring his coaches’ play calling to create big gains based on his own intuition. His fiery antics on the sideline — stomping his right foot, spiking a football — helped the Falcons recover from a 14-point deficit to beat the Redskins yesterday and improve to 6-6 in a wide-open NFC South.
“You have to go through the good times and the tough times and still be you,” Vick said. “You have to believe in yourself. I’m going to go out there every time and wear it on my sleeve. That’s me.”
It was little surprise, then, that yesterday’s game started with another Vick meltdown. On Atlanta’s first two possessions, Vick’s receivers dropped two passes and his offensive line provided too little protection for even the best escape artist. After Atlanta’s second-consecutive failed drive, Vick picked up the football and hurled it to the sideline. “It was a very frustrating start,” he said.
Since Vick became the first player picked in the 2001 NFL draft, his emotional disposition has occasionally frustrated teammates and fans. He rarely relies on his receivers, and he tries to make big plays all by himself — especially when the Falcons fall behind. Yesterday, when a fullback failed to block for him on a promising run, Vick stomped his feet and emphatically shook his head.
“When he gets emotional, it spreads,” Atlanta wide receiver Michael Jenkins said. “He got angry, he started yelling and that fired everybody up. It’s not always a bad thing to get angry. It’s contagious. We get going when he gets going, and that’s what eventually happened. We started making plays.”
Vick made many of them himself, playing with his usual abandon. He scrambled effectively, running for a first down on two of Atlanta’s scoring drives. He dodged Redskins defenders in the third quarter and then threaded a tight, third-down pass to Ashley Lelie. He left the game when a Redskins defender fell on his leg, and then came back one play later. Did he feel okay? “Not really,” Vick said, “but you know me.”
Vick smiled slyly, and then walked toward his locker. What some had identified as his greatest weakness last week had once against become his foremost strength: His brilliance is unpredictable and impossible to control.

Wow it always amazes me how people love to quote stats in order to determine greatness. It is great to rack up passing yard and the like but if your team loses what is so great about passing for 350 yard (a la P. Manning). It is very important to understand one thing about football this game is 50% mental 25% talent, 5% coahing and 20% luck. Many will probably dispute that but some of these hail mary plays are sheer luck. Someone mentioned ealier the weaknesses of Rex Grossman (who pretty much has been sucking statistically, for all you stats lovers) but his team continues to win and are division champions imagine that. It really does not matter how you win or who you beat the point is to win. I believe Mike Ditka said it best, I don’t believe in stats I believe in wins and losses period!

Football Fan,
5% percent coaching? You’re kidding right? Coaching is a HUGE part of the game. Atlanta has 11 Pro Bowlers on it’s team. They are 6-6. How many does New England have? What’s their record?

Ok. Can y’all calm down? #1, learn to spell. #2, this is a site to post your comments about the good and bad of the Falcons. That means, CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM!! Yeah, they have had a few bad games, but a real Falcons fan still loves and respects the team.
On that note, we needed this win. It will bring morale and confidence up. Norwood ran like his mother was chasing him with a belt, trying to spank him. Big ‘ups to Norwood. I am proud of defense, but I’m worried about D. Hall. Where has he been?
Let’s just improve on it. Stay strong Falcons!!!

I have been a critic of Donatell and Knapp, but I have to give credit when credit is do. Donatell broke from his beloved soft zone cover DEF and got aggressive much earlier than normal. We were in it on Wash’s last drive, which allowed them to get near the goal line so quickly. But he called an allout blitz, which forced the QB to throw an interception and seal the victory.
Knapp finally started using Norwood in the passing attack, although it was as a decoy. At any rate, the formations he used, after the 1st 2 possessions, forced the DEF to spread out. This made allout blitzing very difficult, and risky, which took pressure off the OLine. The end result was Vick getting the time to do what he is capable of doing as a passer.
It is a shame, and an indication of a more serious coaching problem, when a QB and his REC have to invent plays in the huddle that actually work. Maybe it’s an indication that Vick, and other Falcon QB’s, should be allowed to call some of their own plays. It certainly can’t be any worse than what we have experienced from Knapp.
Finally, I am going to take my own advice and not respond to the idiots and morons that post on these blogs. These blogs are for intelligent Falcon Fans with intelligent ideas about our team. Let’s reclaim our domain by refusing to respond to any more of the idiotic comments and responses. Hopefully, the AJC will eventually use their resources to take appropriate action against these haters and race baiters. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!

One things for sure, Mike Vick plays his butt off. Sometimes I think he tries too hard. One other thing, when he trusts a reciever like Crump or Finneran (out for season), he’ll go to them when they need a big play. Norwood is exciting, in reply to an earlier post, but Dunn is still better at making the most of nothing. I think Dunn is a great player for Norwood to play behind for a year or two. And the Vick-Norwood backfield has to be the fastest of all time! This black-white crap is annoying. I happen to be white and a Vick supporter, that’s all I’m saying. One other thing—fools always love the backup QB. They often do have some success here, becuase the teams don’t game plan for them. that all changes once they get a look at them.

I truly believe that the big Vick contract is at best the folly of an amateurish owner and organization and at worst a crippling blunder that will haunt the Falcons for a decade to come. With that said he had a pretty good game yesterday, given all of his limitations 8 for 16 although well below average for a competent full sized pro QB it is a pretty good effort for Vick. When you combine that with no turnovers he did about as well as possible as reasonable possible so congratulations Mikey on a good game.
Don’t underestimate Jason Campbell; we would be very lucky to have him here in Atlanta. He has great size and strength and a cannon for an arm, three games in he is doing pretty well. Next year with Schaub gone and some game experience you will all wish we had Campbell here

Not that it matters to most of you ignorant, race-baiting bloggers, but I’m a 65 year old white dude who’s highly offended by the use of the “N” word and all the racial and derrogatory remarks made on this blog.
I don’t expect you to make any changes, but * YOU”RE MAKING A FOOL OF YOURSELVES AND ARE A DISGRACE TO THOSE OF US WHO MAY DISAGREE, BUT TRY TO DO IT IN A DIGNIFIED AND RESPECTFUL WAY!*

I’ll be a MF…not only is Vick a coach killer, hes now a radio host killer. If only he could kill defenses as well as he kills other peoples carrers, we here in Falcon Nation would have the world at our feet. Sorry about the job thing Big Jim, you didnt deserve the flack you received just for speaking the truth. VIVA le SCHAUB!!

Bird Babe,
You write to Iceman but I never hear from you. No birthday card, nothing at Christmas, never even a message left on my machine. I check my email every evening ,in hopes you’ve written, but there’s never anything from you in all that spam. I can’t help it, I’ve had fantasies of sharing an aviary with you but those dreams have been pecked into oblivion by your indifference to me. It appears you prefer the coldness of an Iceman. I will continue to read your excellent insights into the workings of the Falcons and I’ll still post my little inanities, while waiting for you to turn away from the cold and embrace the warmth.
P.S. I have the flu and I’m bored!
