Positional battles heat up

After a light day on Sunday the team is back at it in earnest this morning in Flowery Branch. It’s a big week of practice since that first preseason game is closing in quickly.

By all accounts, the Midtown Touchdown practice was a success on Saturday, but it’s down to business this week. It’s a big time for the battles going on in the secondary. Chris Crocker and Chris Houston both missed practice this weekend because of minor knee issues. Both are expected to be back out there this morning, I’ll let you know how they look.

Meanwhile, Steve Wyche’s story today on Jimmy Williams does a good job breaking down the battle at free safety. At corner, Lewis Sanders had a good practice Saturday morning and will look to build on that this week.

I’ll get my first look today at Tony Franklin, a veteran signed to add some depth to the secondary.

Since Friday’s blog, two offensive linemen were taken out of the picture. Rookie center Doug Datish was put on injured reserve and he’ll be out for the season (broken hand). The team released veteran guard Toniu Fonoti who was battling some injuries. I think that move says a lot about what the team thinks of Justin Blalock, who has done a nice job since missing the first day of training camp during contract negotiations. We’ll see where things settle today as far as the O-line depth chart goes.

if the falcons were smart, they would have not fired Mora, traded vick to Detroit for the 2nd pick in the draft and drafted Calvin Johnson, and then not let Matt Schaub go. They would win it all this year if they had done that.

Watch and enjoy:

pdiddyGT, Let’s not live in the past. I actually look forward to who is going to step up as a leader and a difference maker. If the season is not a good one, it won’t be the first time. It’s not like the Falcons have a history of success. I wish the best for whoever wins the starting jobs and I wish the best for the Falcons season. Even with your changes, the Falcons still would not have been favored because Schaub has yet to prove himself.

I hate to wish failure upon someone’s career but I really want to see how Matt Schaub does in Houston since everything thinks he is this great QB. He was great in college but he hasn’t done anything in the pros, even when he played. I wonder if people blame the offensive line if he plays terrible. I think the best player should play!!That has yet to be determined!! But I like Jimmy Williams!!

I want to see who ends up in the secondary. Will D Fall live up to his own hype or will he resume the roll of Toast II. Can the D-line handle the run? I want to see Williams back at LB. I think Boley, Williams, and Brooking is a good LB core keep brooking out of coverage. Defense has really let this team down over the last few years.

Hello D this is reality calling! He is not locked into a position battle at this time. He is at home collecting a fat paycheck. In the imortal words of the Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”

And with your post you have just turned this whole blog into a Vickfest. Thanks

I welcome these battles in the secondary. We need depth. Hopefully, this is also an indication that there will be a quality player at nickel.

Hey D — no “we” don’t.

Now, go home. Be quiet. Let the rest of us get back on-topic. Bye.

the defense should be better off then the offense. Im not sure if Joey has the arm strenght to throw the ball down the field in this new offense. By week 4 he will be benched.

Craig, How’s Tony Taylor doing?

I don’t think Joey will get benched like that. He is a system QB. Will the Petrino system work on the NFL level. He is accurate as long as he has some time which remains to be seen the Falcons will be ok.

If he cannot make it as the starter then the Falcons are really in trouble because they do not have another NFL QB on the roster.

I agree with the general sentiment here. Let’s forget about “he who shell remain nameless”, Matt what’s his face, and anybody else who is not going to be wearing a Falcon uniform in the near future. I’ll be looking forward to hear more about this Justin Blaylock. As a matter of fact, how is the entire line looking right now. any problems with Forney’s shoulder?

Let Vick Play….Let Vick Play….The Dome will be empty until Vick returns to the field with his electric excitement…..Blank & Goodell - Make it official Vick will be back on the field b4 the last preseason game….He can play and deal with his legal issues…Kobe Bryant and Ray Lewis got through their ordeal….Give Vick a chance to do the same….

Ok there is two that means we only have to hear from ten more of the protesting people from the dome on Sunday. He cannot leave the state of Virginia kinda makes it difficult to deal with home games in Georgia let alone road games.

The NFL chose to spare its sponsors the PETA parade. Mike is getting paid while this is going on. Handle your business and get back on the field it is up to Mike.

Dome will be empty maybe you should have used your powers of prediction to warn Mike this was coming!

By Baller12

August 6, 2007 11:17 AM | Link to this

He is not confined to Virginia. He can leave he just has to get it approved through the judge and that shouldn’t be a problem. I’d rather deal with PETA than have to endure a complete season with Joey Harrington. Stuff happens!!! PETA is to animals as Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton are to a high profile racial case….It’s all about the dollar bill….PETA and other groups are making $$ off of this situation so let them do their thing while Vick does his on the field. Blank caved in and he’s going to pay for it this season until Vick returns….JMO

Does anyone watch reality news at 6PM? A Police Officer,CEO’S and Politicans still are paid during investigations. Why is it that Michael Vick shouldn’t get paid. Many of the bloggers live in the Atlanta area and are not from the South. You don’t support any of the PRO TEAMS here.I forgot 90% of you aren’t Falcons Fans and let’s not forgot about being a supporter.I was at the Dome before Michael Vick came. I could count the number of fans still there on one hand in my section. I am disappointed in the way media has handled Vick. When the Falcons were losing the AJC SPORTS WRITERS talked about the team like dead BIRDS. Atlanta does not deserve a SUPERSTAR that draws a sell out crowd. They are known for letting superstars go and they go on to win rings elsewhere.Patrick Kearney had a rape in his house while home. Wake up people HUMAN REMAINS STILL IN NEW ORLEANS NOT BURIED. ALL OF AMERICA SAW THEM DIE ON TV. CNN also had done a segement on PETA months ago about the number of animals they kiled. THAT should include.DOGS…DOGS…DOGS…DOGS

Mike is getting paid as we speak not unlike policeman under investigation. It was ok for Imus to lose his job basically from pressure to his sponsors and not ok for Mike to be paid and stay away from camp?

Blank didn’t cave the commish spared him from making a decision. Of course they are gonna come out and say we were gonna suspend him for 4 games. It saves face with animal rights groups.

Ultimately Vick holds the key to returning to the field. Not Blank or Harrington, PETA. Get over it it is just a game surrounded by business of sponsors that help pay for the over inflated salaries of these NFL players that are stupid enough to risk it all.

Don’t support the team nobody will miss a fair weather fan anyway!

i’m stoked about the season. i really like what i have read about justin blaylock. he sounds like he is going to be a steal. the guy never missed a game at texas and scored the highest out of everybody on the wondelic (not on the team but in the draft). i hope jimmy williams steps up and gets the starting nod, i dont trust crocker at all. can’t wait for friday.

I’m worried about fan support this season guys. I swear the Midtown Touchdown did not have 20K people as reported in the AJC. I was there and there was no way that there was that many poeple there. It seemed like there was more poeple last year when it rained. They were even giving away tickets to people to come during the event!!! If people are not showing up at events with low price tickets, imagine what the dome is going to be like this year?

Oh yeah the Kerney thing this arguement is so SAD . Kerney was not indicted or even implicated. A guest at his house made a poor decision and brought people back to his house. He was asleep and cleared by the VICTIM. Until those pitbulls clear Vick he is on the hook.

There is also a huge difference in an act that took place over maybe a hours time by a drunk house guest and a venture that went on for 6 years by people that you let live in your house permanently.

6 years > 1 hour Get it? Now get off your racial high horse and park it and support the Falcons on the field.

NASDAQ, win and all is forgotten. we’ll be ok, it might be a little thin this year but i think we have the players and coaching staff in place to start winning. maybe not this year, but our core group is strong, young and hungry. you never know, we may just be suprised this year!

Hey Y”all:

With everything being equal, the Falcons need to retain Michael Vick. If not, he will come back and hurt teams in the league and the Falcons. He is under contract here in Atlanta and we need to keep him that way when his trial is over. However, what Vick need to do is first “fire” his lawyer who let him get into that shoddy deal with dog fighting with his homeboys. Second, he need to change his life habits, especially knowing he isn’t poor anymore and do not have to play those ghetto games that poor, deviant ghetto people involve themselves in. He appears, off the field, to be behaving like the “Beverly Hillbillies” wherein he becomes a millionaire but still like to hang clothes on the clothes line by the new swimming pool. Vick’s ghetto thinking is what has gotten him in this current situation. All he could blame is himself, his lawyer, and his family for not adjusting his life to the income and class that he is now on. he needs to clean up hisa act when he gets back becuase from what I am seeing in regards to how he handles his businees off the field, it appears he is a “dumb a*”. I hope I am wrong because I love the guy as a football player. Also first and foremost, I hope he and his family find GOD. I am confident this will give him “WISDOM” and “UNDERSTANDING” about himself, people, and life.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN. TELL EVERYBODY.

AG, I really hope so man. I’ve been a fan for a long time and I’d hate hear the visiting teams fans cheering louder than our own fans again. On a good note, it seems like this offense opens things up to the point where even Joey could have success. If he is going to be our QB for this season, I really hope he improves his ability to throw accurately. See you at the dome dude!
