Wrapping it up at The Branch

Some sights, sounds, thoughts and fun items as minicamp winds down at The Branch:

Owner Arthur Blank was out for Sunday’s practice, and lined up close enough to some of the drills to prompt flashbacks of last-season’s training camp injury to mind. Remember, when he sustained a torn rotator cufff after getting slammed by Fred McCrary?

“This is where Mrs. Blank wanted to spend the first half of Mother’s Day,” Blank said later, toward the end of drills. “At practice.”

After that, Mrs. Blank was to be treated to brunch.

Without pads, it’s hard to get a feel for how the defensive line shapes up for the time being, especially first-round pick Jamaal Anderson.

Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said the 6-foot-6 ex-Razorback “shows flashes” of why they valued him so highly, but contact work in preseason camp will be needed to get the fuller picture. The same goes for the interior linemen, whose ranks are depleted by the absences of Rod Coleman and Grady Jackson.

As for last year’s top pick, Jimmy Williams, Zimmer said “he looks like the kind of guy we’re looking for at safety.” His strong suit is considered to be run coverage.

He’s moving there after the Falcons drafted Arkansas cornerback Chris Houston in the second round. Houston had some moments lining up with the first-team defense Sunday. But he’d probably rather forget biting and missing a try at a pick on a sideline route. Joe Horn danced quite a few yards with plenty of open field ahead of him.

D.J. Shockley’s got plenty of company in the quarterbacking corps behind Michael Vick, but the former UGA player is sporting some different technique throwing the ball. Instead of a wide arc-like windup out of the snap, he’s working on a more textbook football throwing motion.

Newly signed Joey Harrington and Chris Redman have the mechanics down, but showed some glimpses of their drawbacks. Harrington wasn’t consistent throwing the ball down the field, got intercepted by Allen Rossum after badly overthrowing Roddy White. Redman, who knows Petrino’s offensive schemes from Louisville, had a bullet pass easily picked off in short coverage.

Michael Vick still shows some tendencies to hold on to the ball for a long time, even when he’s got an open receiver. One one play he stayed in the pocket for a good while, then bounced a pass toward Laurent Robinson, who had come back for the ball.

Robinson’s been earning raves all weekend, but after messing up a route got the full treatment from Petrino. Before the coach could yank off his cap and get in the rookie’s grill, White quickly counseled him on his error.

The placekicking game is considered competitive between new signees Billy Cundiff and Aaron Elling. But Elling didn’t help himself by badly missing two close field goal attempts, wide right. If he were a golfer they’d be spectacular slices. He did nail his subsequent kick, an extra point that sailed over the netting and the camera crew filming up high.

This may have been mentioned in a previous entry of Blog That Kick, but rookie safety Daren Stone has some serious hops. While at the University of Maine, the sixth-round pick cultivated a hobby of leaping cars in a single bound.

Not the hoods of cars. The roofs — of sizable American sedans. Watch his technique here and here.

Doesn’t even need the Fosbury Flop. I don’t know if Stone will make the team, but that might be as nifty a display of physical skill as anything at minicamp this weekend.

Our own D. Orlando Ledbetter cornered Petrino after practice to get the former high school point guard’s all-time All-NBA team for the AJC’s daily newspaper featured Gimme 5.

I won’t spill all the beans here — check the top of page two of the sports section in the coming days for all the names — but one of Petrino’s faves is none other than Atlanta-born World B. Free.

Gotta love it! Anbody who thinks the halcyon days of pro basketball have been in more recent decades is missing the glory of the ’70s, when the NBA took the best of the rollicking ABA, including a more free-spirited flair, and laid the foundation for what’s come since.

Didn’t mean to get off-topic — or off-sport — but I couldn’t pass that one up.

Ray knew exactly what he was doing when he made those comments. It was with the purpose of getting into the spotlight again. I don’t know if there’s any credibility to what he said (after all, he did have an axe to grind with the Falcons following his messy departure) but if there is any truth to it, then let’s hope Joey is ready to take the helm.

Thank you vick haters suck for bringing out the reality card, but it just sounds more interesting when a black man commits a crime because they know it will be easier to convict him. That being said, I do agree with Boss Lady that Buchanan just was upset about not being the man anymore. His comments reek of sour grapes. I don’t think that Vick really did anything with the dog incident.

We’re not going to get all the answers on this dog-fighting thing for a while. It’s not blowing over like I initially thought it would. I’m willing to give Vick the benefit of the doubt (aka- he’s innocent until proven guilty), but if he is found to be involved, then he should face the music. And that would probably involve a suspension. I certainly hope he had nothing to do with it.

anyone who would like their 15 minutes of fame, all you have to do is step on and say you have credible sources that link Vick directly to……. anything..

My questions are.. these people who have direct knowledge of linking vick to this “crime”.. do they know that they can be charged for not reporting the crime. I assume if they have first hand knowledge of the crime, they were probably involved as well.

All the negative aspects of this case make headline news because of the status of Vick. If he leaves the toilet seat up, it makes the front page and they call him inconsiderate.

The story where a reporter confronted the DA in Virginia and asked him if anyone should be charged for the incident… he replied “for what”…

The truth is.. these reporters have not seen the evidence and they are relying on people trying to get the 15 minutes of fame for the information.

Lets judge Vick on the facts of the case when they are release by those who were actually there…..

Not on some people who say.. yeah.. I know he did he… but please … dont use my name in your story…..

What’s up with all the Roddy White bashing? Michael Vick is a fabulous and talented player that refuses to embrace the team concept. This is why he can’t connect passes with his receivers. He thinks they should read his mind, rather than run specific routes. If I were Michael Vick, I would beg Payton Manning for a 3 day one-on-one minicamp on how to be a better leader on the field, and particularly, how to be a better passer. Roddy White will be fine, as long as Vick get’s him the ball!

Check this out: ESPN insider has an article titled “Mora helps Seattle.” Considering Seattle’s a winning organization, Mora helps them WHAT? Helps them understand how to lose? Helps them fail? Helps them ruin a good roster like the only thing he has a track record doing? Since I don’t have “insider,” I’d like to know from anyone who does. I’d love to know how a guy who takes a roster full of unique talent and an owner who doesn’t mind spending to win and makes a joke out of them and embarasses a franchise with a history of embarrasment can help a Super Bowl contender do anything other than ^%$#-up. this whole thing stinks. The talking heads on espn just make stuff up as they go along and this is supposed to be “fact”. give me a break. I saw an article or two a week after the story broke stating the D.A probably wont even charge him, but that went away fast. why? because the producers and the check writers for espn, SI and every other media outlet get money from the ratings this story is making. Just like the water bottle incident. the police fabricate a story to the media who present it as “evidence”. that just shows you how deep this thing is. Mike if I were you I wouldnt leave the house brother. its obvious the powers that be are on a witchhunt and your one of their man targets. nobody talks about anything he does for the community and he does a lot. maybe more then anyone in football outside of warwick dunn. how about the history he made on the field last year running for 1,000 yards. guess that doesnt matter either. he probably would have had himself 25 or more touchdown passes if the wideouts didnt stone hand so many of his passes. I live in New England and the press around here are already putting the halo on RANDY MOSS!!! it sickens me. there is a new double standard in the nfl, and if you dont play for the patriots you could be the next target. as far as I know Michael Vick hasnt broken any laws. and for all the vick haters(schaub lovers) why dont ya’ll cheer for the texans this year. they need the support. its unbelievable to so many falcons fans turn their backs when the team needs them the most. guess its true what they say about the south. Joey get ready? why? first it was start doug johnson(joke) then schaub(joke), now joey. the reason schaub is gone is because he runs the west coast offense. well i got news for you, the falcons dont run that offense anymore so he was useless. as for ray pukehann, good going brother. the only color you see is green. at least here in new england people will go down flames supporting their team. anybody who thinks vick shouldnt be the starting qb is just plain racist bottomline. and i dont care if your white or black with that statement. hes won more games then anybody in falcon history. if he stays healthy he’ll get his 3,000 yards and 25 tds thats a promise. just cheer for another team fellas its that simple. or you rather get rid of him and set the team back 7 more years. yea thats it. lets bring back doug johnson!! what a frickin joke this is

Look, most of you have already deemed Vick guilty, so what does it matter who comes out of the woodworks with more allegations?…in my mind, I am tired of all the hoopla already. I say let the investigation go on, get all the facts and then base your decision on that. There are some who have an axe to grind with Vick/the Falcons organization, so why give much credance to what they have to say. Heresay is cheap…let the facts speak for themselves and keep an open mind about all the heresay from former teammates and ex-players. In my mind, if Buchanan knew so much, why didn’t he come out earlier about this? He is no saint and he is just as guilty as Vick in this if he is now trying to throw Vick under the bus just to settle an old grudge abotu something he knew about and didn’t come out about it earlier.

By daveo

There are 2 sides to this argument.

First off Vick HAS been on a downward spiral the last few years, what was the Falcons record last year? It’s not fair to say we “need” Vick to get to the playoffs, not if he just gives up when the going gets tough. He has to learn from his mistakes, not make them again, and start having fun with the game of football. He needs to focus, and he apparently needs his mom.

Second: Idiots playing the race card. Holy crap can we not discuss Vick’s numerous faults and poor decisions without being called racist? The man can run, his rushing yards show that. But until he gets smarter and starts trusting his team mates we’ll never get to the Super Bowl. It’s that simple. I admit some of these posts can be racist, just ignore them. And quit calling anyone that doesn’t kiss the ground Vick walks on racist, that just makes you a hypocrite.

Dearest Jaycee,

I had difficulty making out your message, but I decided to attempt to respond since my name was mentioned.

The AJC is an English-based publication. The ATLANTA FALCONS are an English-based franchise. The article on the subject of FALCONS FOOTBALL preceding this blog was typed in English. Therefore, English appears to be the primary football language here in Atlanta.

It is much easier for FALCONS fans to communicate with one another when everyone speaks the same language.

Can we be English-speaking friends and engage in flowing football discussion, Jaycee?

Thanks for your time, Jaycee. Have a nice day.

Why attack Vick because Vick is arrogant, rich, young and black and he comes from nothing to something may I add he’s one of the very few Black quarterback to ever play and better than that he plays for a city and state where if you take the wrong turn you might end up on a tree you damn rebels no I don’t play the race card but just open your eyes Georgia screwed DJ Shockley’s career he was ten times better than David Green and Richt Knew it but he had to play by the good ole boy rules on top how did Pinkins end up in South Carolina when he was the #3 in the nation I tell you how the same way DJ faked that injury againgst Miss st. REBELS can’t let bs go!!!!!! Vick is not the best QB but he is the best athlete since Deion Sanders he does his job the best way he can and he leads I think Petrino will show everyone that Vick is more valuable than they think I also think that he should enroll back in college to finish his degree because vick if you’re reading you’re a menace to society when you’re young rich educated and BLACK!!!!! I really don’t agree for making big D1 schools rich they don’t give a damn bout you you’re just a n**** dat can run or jump! take it to a Black COllege where you will graduate and have a chance for the NFL. look at STEVE MCNAIR

The above post situation is not so unlike the one Vick is embroiled in. The house/property where the rape occured belongs to Kearney. The house/property where the alledged dog fighting occured belongs to Vick. How is it that Kearney get off without being called to task and is proclaimed innocent and guilt free when Vick is not accorded the same privilege? If that is not “selective racism”, oxygen doesn’t exist. Most of the “white” folks of Georgia and particular in Atlanta have it in for Vick and nothing he says or does will ever be enough to please them, until he is ran out of town and they have a “white” guy in as the QB of the Falcons..this is all about “color/skin pigmentation”, make no mistake about that.

I cannot believe you pulled out Pinkins! Holtz did that kid a favor he was not a very good quarterback. I seen him up close and personal. He was good for the what should have been extinct Holtz offense but to play at the next level he needed to change positions. Doing that was in his own best interest.

As for Vick only time will tell if he is guilty of any crime. Until that time let the man play football and move on. The investigation will either clear him or not. Just as Kerney was cleared when the victim stated he had nothing to do with it. So unless the Pitbulls are gonna speak we need to wait until the investigation is completed.

MV or Harrington? Truly ask yourselves which you would rather have under center because that’s all we have. My choice is MV for a number of reasons. Everybody loved him when Reeves was here because Reeve knew how to play him. MV was in a dumb system for the past 3 years (backed up by reports form his team mates). And now that he’s back in a similar system that he started in, he should be playing much better. After about 2 years and he doesn’t play better then he’s got to go. Every race on this planet has got to agree with that.

When I first read the story about Ray Buchanan, I could not believe that he would throw Mike Vick under the bus. No that he has stated that he did not say those words, I’m happy. The AJC is a sorry news organization that only interested in selling newspapers at any cost. You guys don’t care about the reputations of people and how it will affect their families. You’re just an inaccurate, lazy reporting organization that’s immune from rebuttal. I hope someone sues you for slander AJC.

Well at least the AJC had the decency to report Ray’s denial today.

Have y’all seen the VA prosecutor video when he appeared quite irritated being ambushed by local hack reporters at his home concerning the Vick ‘investigation’

After seeing that, I am increasingly of the opinion that Peta and the Vick haters have piled on. making accusations without any real evidence, and no way that prosecutor will be charging Vick based on any FACTS made public so far.

And you folks dissing Vick’s QB abilities must not have been around when he played for Reeves, just like I hope you are long gone when he proves adept at passing this year when playing for coaches WITH A CLUE ON OFFENSE.

**AJC’s false reporting has again been unraveled. I hope ESPN, CNNSI, and Fox Sports jumps all over the AJC. How do you write an article quoting someone that quoted someone else. Wouldn’t the best thing as journalist be that you talk to the original quoter? I cant wait for the next Vick article to come out. I anticipate it coming out 2 weeks before training camp. Probably talking about a license plate being 4 days out of date in Virginia. Then the next article coming 2 weeks before the first preseason game. I can safely assume that we will get another article 2 weeks before opening day. AJC has use MV7 to boost its paper sales in the US. Now ESPN reporters are quoting AJC. I hope that this false stardom puts the paper back in its place. A ole southern hick paper. Full of false tales and he say she say. The paper has felled to put a falcon into the hall of fame. It tripped all over Dominic Wilkins. If not for his peers in the NBA he would still be on the outside looking in. Ajc painted a awful picture of the current home run king. Ajc is a disgrace of a newspaper. Chasing story after story trying to get national recognition. Here’s a tip. Treat the starts of your NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and arena football with respect. How about reporting news and get away from witch hunts in the middle of the night. Truthful honest and intelligent reporting will get one of you guys on pardon the interruption, Rome is burning, the best damn sports show. Real News flash. No one is really interested in listening to hick false tales.

Once again, you idiots keep running with half truths and assume they are real. RAY HAS SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT, HE DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT VICK AND DOG FIGHTING. Mike Vick will be cleared of the dog fighting accusations, and he will have a great season this year and make his 4th pro bowl. Vick has played 4 full seasons in the NFL and made the pro bowl three times. How bad quarterbacks make the probowl? Answer = None. When Dan Reeves was here Vick was unstoppable run and pass. With a decent offensive system in place he will get back to that status. And if our defense steps up we will be in the playoffs this year.

Since some members of the media who are black are now coming out saying that MV needs to get it together i have to ask: If a black reporter expresses the same concerns that a white reporter has does that make him racist? Does it make him a sellout? Face the facts. He is so grossly overpayed it is ridiculous.

Listen all you Vick haters…..you can go to Carolina and watch the fair skinned quarterback you really want to see. He may have made a couple bad decisions (who doesnt) but did he beat his wife like Bobby Cox, or take steroids like Clemmens have a baby out of wedlock like Chipper or Tom Brady. So if Vick should be aware of everything that happens at house he doesnt stay in why shouldnt KERNEY BE AWARE OF RAPE THAT TOOK PLACE IN HIS OWN HOUSE WITh HIS FRIENDS. Talk about keeping better company. Kerney needs better people around him. I heard Landry and he he is not sure what he heard….how can you do an article on an over heard conversation……way to throw ray under the bus Landry. Vick makse the Falcon relevant if no Vick no Falcons on National TV. I dont here the Houston Texans selling out now that Matt Schaub is there. Every other city supports there star players. He not not been convicted of anything He makes every game exciting. You country losers what to get rid of the most electric player in the NFL. Vick is the reason for the season.

To the a***** who said kerney should go before the commssioner. The lady who was raped proclaimed that kerney was completely innocent and had no involvement. And for your information it was a black guy who raped the woman at kerney’s residence. Imagine that!

Mike Vick could murder somebody in broad daylight and there could be 100 witnesses and some of these stupid coons would come on here and claim he was framed. It’s just like all those idiot blacks when polled say that barry bonds is a good guy. Even if vick gets out of this dog fighting he will screw up again because he is running with the wrong crowd.

Falcon30901 or should I just say retard! This story came from a radio broadcast from a sports show in tampa. The guy who is making the accusation works for Fox sports not the AJC numbnuts.

How is MV7 Responsible for things that happen in his home in another state that he does not live in, when Patrick Kerney is not responsible for what happens in a home that he is living in, and was even there at the time of the crime!?! This is rediculous! Can someone please tell me how this can be justified?

Go back and read my previous post and you will understand. A recap if you will. An investigation is on-going to determine if Vick was involved in the dog fighting. He claims to have no involvement. The investigation centers on the alleged dog fighting activity on his property. If it was a crime to have an idiot tennent he would have already been arrested. If it is determined that he is involved he will be liable. Just let the investigation uncover the truth.

In Kerney’s case the victim reported to police Kerney was not involved and therefore no charges filed against him or any further investigation into him.

In Vicks case the alleged victims are animals and cannot speak to the police. He has not been charged with anything as of yet and is innocent until proven guilty. The investigation will establish if he had knowledge of alleged animal abuses. Hopefully Mike was truthful and he has no involvement and will be cleared. If he was not he will pay the price.

There is way too much jumping to conclusions going on let the people whose job it is to find the truth do it. And if he is charged and found guilty it isn’t because of some global conspiracy against Mike it is that he is guilty. I hope we can soon move forward with some winning football.
