Reflections on Falcons’ playoff run

There’s no game this weekend.

Are you coming down with a case of the shakes, a symptom of Falcons Football Fever withdrawal?

I thought about driving up to Charlotte to see the Panthers’ game, but decided not to. I can get back to the kids’ activities. We have a fast-pitch traveling team practice in the morning, a frat meeting in the middle of the day and an Upward basketball game at night. That should keep my mind off of football.

I’ll watch the games on Sunday. That should be enough.

But just sitting here, I wanted to come up with 10 reflections from the season. There not any good if you have to look them up.

Here are my 10 “reflections” from the season:

(Ten) — Michael Turner rushing for over 200 against the Rams. You knew he wasn’t out of gas in the final game of the season.

(Nine) — Rookie defensive back Chevis Jackson’s 95-yard interception return against the Saints. He was solid in the slot all season. The LSU product quietly went about doing his job.

(Eight) — Jerious Norwood’s two rushing touchdowns against the Rams and his 92-yard kickoff return.

(Seven) — Jason Elam’s field goal to beat Tampa Bay in overtime.

(Six) — Roddy White and Michael Turner being selected to the Pro Bowl.

(Five) — Justin Blalock’s fumble recoveries against Tampa Bay and Minnesota to keep the playoff train rolling down the tracks.

(Four) — Matt Ryan’s passing performance in New Orleans. After an early pick, he was ticked off. He started drilling the ball in there against the Saints’ injury-riddled secondary.

(Three) — Michael Turner rushing for 220 in the opener against Detroit. In the NFL you’ve got to beat the bad teams. You knew from the opener, the Falcons could at least run the ball and kick dirt in the face of the bad teams.

(Two) — Matt Ryan’s pass to Michael Jenkins in final 11 seconds to set up Jason Elam’s game-winning redemption kick against Chicago. Remember, he’d missed one earlier.

(One) — How Coach Mike Smith and his staff had the team ready to play each and every week. They never really got their doors blown off even though their margin of error - especially on defense - was miniscule. Even in the playoff game when the Falcons spotted the Cardinals 14, they came back. They couldn’t overcome giving them another touchdown on the botched handoff/fumble to Antrel Rolle.

As we get ready for the offseason, what are some of your reflections from the Falcons improbable march to the playoffs?

My reflection is that as a team and an organization they gave us more than we could have ever realistically expected. And I am confident that TD and Coach Smith will keep things positive and moving forward. “Wait ‘til next year” does not have a hollows ring to it, this year.

Make that “hollow”.

If we can get some ‘playmakers’ on defense via the draft and free agency, we’ve got a chance to consistently be a team battling for a playoff slot.

Could not agree with (One) more. The Falcons never got blown out in a year it was expected. In the games The Falcons lost they were still in it til the end. They crushed the bad teams and beat the NFC South opponents at home and won some big games on the road. And it was done with a rookie GM, rookie HC, rookie QB and a lot of other rookies, and a roster that was more than 50% changed from 2007. Michael Turner was the best FA signing of 2008 and the veterans stepped up after the debacle of 2007.

2009 will pose it challenges (mainly the schedule and no one will take the Falcons lightly) but the the light at end of the tunnel has never been brighter for the long run…

I like your style D-Led. I agree, THIS is the biggest difference between these Birds and even those during our previous playoff runs with Vick, Dunn and Crumpler: They competed in EVERY game. That in itself was landmark for this franchise. Key moments from 2008-2009:

1) First pass…first touchdown. Was a sign of things to come, for both Matt Ryan and the Detroit Lions. Prescient.

2) Win in Oakland. Was dominant Atlanta Falcon football…when was the last time we said that!?!?

3)Acquisition of Foxy. Changed our entire season. Foxy became the best cover DB on our team.

4) Bungled punt in Philly…we should have known then that this season would be defined by being “almost there”. Like in AZ, I think Ryan would have taken us down the field to win the game. Three CRITICAL plays defined this season: the bungled punt in philly, inability to stop 3rd and 5 in New Orleans on the Saints’s last drive, and Brooking’s brain spasm on 3rd and 16 in AZ. “Almost, close” plays…but this is the NFL, not horse shoes and hand grenades.

5) Big wins at San Diego and Minnesota. Both teams are still playing and at least one will be moving on to next week (in my opinion). We went to both stadiums and won…during the stretch. Testament to the coaching.

Looking forward to off-season decisions about free agents and draft picks. Priorities are: Keeping line coach and offensive coordinator, TE, DL, LB, OL, FS (need a ball hawk).

I think Taylor Mays 6’4” 240 4.28 in the forty Safety from USC and Percey “all World” Havin would be great in a Falcons uniform next year, and if we can land Albert Haynesworth or Julius Peppers or both from free agency, that would be great.

MVP - I agree that those players would fit great - BUT

Remember that we are now picking near the end of the rounds - so most of those ideal picks may be taken.

This draft is really going to test how well the management can find talent…

By mountain_jim

Frederick (Bailey) Douglass - I would add another to your critical play list - Roddy’s end-zone drop of Matts 2nd best throw of the year, causing the loss of the home Denver game, which to his credit he owned up to being responsible for the loss. If he had caught that, we might have had a division win and home playoff game without all the noise and non-called offsides and tipped off snap-count that likely caused the fumble that cost the playoff game.

@ SRF you are exactly right about us picking at the end (#25 in first rd) of rounds. In the past I would have been skeptical about our chances of finding any useful personnel additions in this situation. However with Dimitroff calling the shots I feel fairly confident that we will improve the roster via the draft this year as witnessed last year. My greatest reflection of this years’ team is also the FACT that they were prepared to play EVERY WEEK and were competitive EVERY WEEK. Once again congrats to the Falcons Organization this year. Thank you. GO FALCONS!!!!

GREAT Job FDB: Don’t now how I forgot the first pass. That was classic. Forgot about the punt, too.

Mountain_Jim: Critical plays. The Denver drop was near forgivable. It would have been a tough catch. The playoff drop at Arizona was bizarre. Wide open, nobody around drop.

I stayed away from the draft of purpose. I haven’t done much homework on the draft because of the playoff run. Will get up to speed here soon.

If I could add a tie (for numbers four or five), just the sheer terror that QBs must feel knowing that John Abraham is in the neighborhood. That’s another reflection.

By mountain_jim

January 9, 2009 2:03 PM | Link to this

Yes Orlando the Denver drop would have been a really tough catch, but great players need to make that when the games on the line and the ball is there for the taking. Like the catch Arizona (Fitz?) came down with in the playoff game with 2 Falcons all over him.

By **Frederick (Bailey) Douglass**

January 9, 2009 2:04 PM | Link to this

No doubt…Abe was certainly a terror this year. Did his best to stay healthy too, which is a compliment to him and the coaching staff (again).

Check: Minnesota got handled by Philly, so they are gone (shows how much football I’ve watched since our loss). Either way, we hit the road and beat two playoff teams late in the season when we all were pushing for playoff spots.

The Denver drop was crucial Mountain_Jim, but I’m with D-Led, it was an extremely tough catch. Heck of a throw though…it was like he willed the ball to the precise spot. I think the kid has some “Comeback Joe” in him…which is why I think he would have led us to victory in philly, NO and AZ given the opportunity.

Fred Douglass Agree with most of your choices, especially the first pass, which just sent chills up my spine. Loved the domination of the Raiders. Win at SD was huge.

However, you may not have heard but Minnesota will not be playing this weekend.

As a homer type, I would not mind seeing the name Mohammed Massaquoi pop up for the Falcons in the later rounds of the draft.

As for early round picks, there is a good chance of Harvin being there late in the first round if he declares, although I think the Falcons need to be looking for a good play-making LB or big hitting FS in the first round. Don’t really know if any stud lineman will be still on the board at 25, but there might be some good bargain OL or DL in the 2nd or 3rd.

Would love to see Andre Smith in the Black and Red, but to get him the Falcons would have to give up way too much to move up to #1 or 2.

By Najeh Davenpoop

January 9, 2009 2:22 PM | Link to this

Pro Bowlers are supposed to make extremely tough catches.

The Denver game drop and the poorly run route that resulted in an interception in the Philly game… either one could have given the Falcons a first round bye if they had been properly executed.

The Falcons could use a Hines Ward/TJ Houshmandzadeh/Wes Welker type opposite Roddy White — a guy who runs precise routes and catches everything thrown to him, two things White is still unable to do.

One more thing. He doesn’t get enough credit, but Michael Koenen is great. Often his kickoffs don’t get returned and his punts have great hang time to help the coverage snuff the returns. We need to pay that guy.

1) Ryan’s 1st career pass/TD pass

2) Beautiful BOMB thrown by Ryan to White against K.C.

3) Going into Green Bay and leaving with a W

4) 11 seconds to victory

5) Jenkins beating D. Hall for a TD(classic)

6) Jenkins beating D. Hall for a TD (yeah, it was that good)

7) Defense steps up against N.O.

8) Beat down against Carolina

9) Win versus Bucs strenghtens playoff hopes

10) Beat Vikings on the road to clinch playoffs

Mac- totally agree on Michael Koenen. Lest we forget that one of the keys to the Falcon’s staying in games with every opponent despite a marginal defense was our Punt coverage, which set an NFL record with fewest return yards allowed. 18-32 teams a year, since, oh, they started playing in the 1930’s. That’s a lot of punt coverage teams, NONE better than this one. And it all starts with having a punter who can (and consistently does) hang it 4+, sometimes 5 seconds. Nice work, Koenen, and nice work coverage guys. One of the “little things” that will never get on sportscenter or deion’s highlights, but wins games. Unfortunately, like a bad long snapper, for example, it’s a thing you only notice it if it’s killing you. But one of the things that championship teams do.

Najeh Davenpoop: I agree with you on pro bowlers making the tough catch. Did you notice that most of Ryan’s INT’s came while throwing to Roddy. I’m not saying it’s Roddy’s fault because Ryan did make some bad throws(fade route in the end zone and the fly route in the playoffs). Roddy doesn’t run the best of routes(Phi game as you mentioned)and he doesn’t fight for the ball either. Heck of a talent, but he along with Ryan have some work to do in the off-season.

Without a doubt, for me at least, the final 11 seconds of “no-way-that-just-happened” football against the bears was the best memory of the season. It ranks right up there with the Bartkoski and BJ Tolliver hail marys as best Falcon’s last second miracles of all time.

Jenkins is a good receiver. He showed a nice pair of hands this year. I expect him to continue to get better with Matt Ryan back there. Harry Douglas should also be better with a season under his belt. It’s kind of hard to knock Roddy White after he’s posted back-to-back 1200-yard-plus seasons. He had a very strong year and is a deserving Pro Bowler.

A talented tight end would go a long way toward opening up the field a bit.

By the way, you sure are picky about a team that you allegedly had forsaken for the Jags, Najeh.

I can already hear the same kind of crying that is going on about Smoltz continuing when the Falcons do the RIGHT thing and release Brooking. But anyone who watched the play when the Cardinals converted 4th and a mile with the game on the line, knows that it is time. He can still tackle but he can’t cover. In the NFL a LB must be able to do both…well.

I’m sort of relieved - now I can root for Kurt Warner for real :)

Football is a game - so we had 18 weeks of fun instead of 19 - I’m not greedy. It’ll make next year that much more fun. I’m telling you, going deep in the playoffs has drawbacks. Even if you win the Bowl, and we did in St. Louis, the next season is a terrible monkey on your back when you just have gone from suckage to rulage. The Pittsburghs and the New Englands need the postseason - and someday we might - but for now, we had a great run and I think it ended at the right time - and we lost to good guys, not the Bucs or the Panzers or the ‘Queens.

How long is it to training camp?

Best Falcons memory from 2009

Walking in the dome on Sunday with my head held high, knowing we’re going to compete and play hard for 60 mins. 7-1 at home. Teams will fear playing here now, no more home games for the visiting teams. The lack of opposing fans at our house will be something I will always remember.

Wow! All I can say is the Falcons far exceeded my expectations this year. It was fun…Of course I wanted to see them beat the Cards but it seemed like they had our number. That happens to even the best teams. I think we need to work on our defense. It seemed like we had too many games where mediocre teams were close to beating us.
I loved how confidet Matty Ice was….So impressive….I also really enjoyed The Burner Turner….I’ll do my best to try and see them in the dome next season!

It has been a strange week…definitely some withdrawl symptoms for me. The Falcons were supposed to win last week…no doubt about it. So the glass is still half empty from my perspective.

My last reflections on the season were seeing a hobbled Milloy get burned twice for TDs, watching a broken hand-off get returned for a TD, seeing Turner get stuffed for 42 yds, noticing the under-utilization of Norwood, watching Ryan throw 2 bad picks, and agonizing over Brooking’s poor defense on the blown 3rd and 16 play.

Taking a look at the big picture, it was still a very gratifying season and getting the first back-to-back winning seasons looks to be in reach. But the schedule will be tougher so a 10-6 record and another wild card berth may be the best we can hope for.

Congratulations to the Arizona Cardinals as they defeated the Atlanta Falcons 30-24 last Saturday in the first round of the playoffs. As I said last Friday, I thought Saturday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals would be decided primarily by turnovers; and it was. After the Falcons turned the football over four times in games on three previous occasions and overcoming the mistakes to prevail, I thought it was about time for other teams to show that they have the stuff it takes to win games under adverse conditions. But unfortunately, the offenders once again were the Atlanta Falcons; and the law of averages with respect to turnovers caught up with us which ultimately sealed our team’s fate.

Looking back at the entirety of season is breathtaking. There are two moments of great anticipation that gives us pause. The Atlanta Falcons @ Lincoln Financial Field is the first and the second one was @ the University of Phoenix Stadium. The stage had been set. The score was 20-14, Eagles. With 2:22 seconds remaining in the game, the Falcons had the football on the minus forty five yard line. Everyone was filled with anticipation as Matt Ryan had an opportunity to lead the Falcons on a game winning drive, 21-20 Falcons…But it didn’t materialize. Although the Falcons had the Eagles down for the kill, officials of the Audubon Society, charged with the preservation of the bald eagle chased the falcons away, and the eagles escaped an almost certain demise.

The second moment of anticipation for people in my circle happened to be the last game of the year. The stage was set. The Arizona Cardinals had the football on the Falcons’ forty eight yard-line, score 30-24, Cardinals. It was third down and sixteen yards to go for a first down. A stop by the Falcons’ defense would give Matt Ryan and the Falcons the football with two minutes remaining on the clock, and the opportunity to drive the team down field for a game winning score, 31-30, Atlanta. But it didn’t materialize; the Arizona Cardinals converted the third down play which ended the NFL season for the Falcons and for me and many of my associates. We are Atlanta Falcons’ fans…

The word is out that the Falcons’ brain trust is already at work preparing for next season. And I’m looking ahead as well. As the Process continues, look for the Atlanta Falcons to win 13 games next year and lose 3 during the regular season. It’s obvious I was a little premature this season, but next season in the playoff, you might as well strike up the band again- and ah 1 and ah 2 and ah 3 and ah - when you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything you heart desires will come to you – Matt Ryan, you and the Atlanta Falcons just won the Super bowl. What are you going to do next? “I’m going to Disney World!”

Have a happy New Year Falcons’ fans. And I’ll see you on down the road; God willing.

Najeh,

I remember really hoping the Falcons would land Mushin back before he went to Chicago…thought the Falcons receivers could really benefit from his leadership and he has great play-making ability. I’d still love to see him in a Falcon uniform, but his years are numbered now.

My reflection, is easy, my anger at Matt Ryan being taken instead of Glenn Dorsey, and how stupid I was in wanting Dorsey instead of the Iceman. I had hoped that we could win as “MANY AS 4 OR 5 GAMES” to start the season, but I am so greatful to the Atlanta Falcons Organization for putting together this outstanding FOOTBALL TEAM. Honestly, I am not unhappy about us not being in the playoffs, we will be back.

The biggest reflection is your QB weakness was exposed by Tampa and he struggled the last 3 weeks of the regular season and the plyy-off game. The fans keep screaming “we need defense”, but continuosly want to draft offensive players. The Matt Ryan will struggle next season, he has a weak arm and teams have seen enough film to defense that college offese that was installed for him. You should have drafted Dorsey then Flacco. I said it at draft time last year and I still say it now. I would have also been happy with Dorsey and Chad Henne. The Falcons lied to Redman to get him to stay in Atlanta. The Falocns will win no more tha 5 games next year against a tougher schedule. I remember fans saying, “why even let a team from the NFC west in the play-offs”. Well that team kicked your teams butt.

Focusing on the positive… congrats to Michael Turner for making first team All-Pro! Best FA signing of 2008. And congrats to Abe for making second team.

And for all the shoulda, coulda, wouldas out there here is the positive for who we don’t have (anymore)…

From Don Banks of SI.com, 2008 All-Disappointing Team:

For those of you who wanted to draft Glenn Dorsey: Glenn Dorsey, Chiefs — Dorsey was expected to be a play-making force for Kansas City this season, but the No. 5 overall pick barely registered on the impact radar screen. His season totals of one sack, one forced fumble, and one pass defensed used to be a good quarter for him at LSU. What happened to all that explosiveness that we saw from him as a Tiger?

For those of you who wanted to draft Darren McFadden: Darren McFadden, Raiders — We thought about just retiring this position in Larry Johnson’s honor — the Chiefs running back was our pick in 2007 — but at least L.J. led his team in rushing. As opposed to the over-hyped McFadden, who was billed as the next Adrian Peterson but wound up a distant second on the Raiders rushing charts behind Justin Fargas, and just ahead of the late-charging Michael Bush.

For those of you who whined when MeAngelo was traded: DeAngelo Hall, Raiders/Redskins — The mind boggles at the fact Oakland gave Atlanta second- and fifth-round picks for Hall last offseason, and then handed him a seven-year, $70 million contract that included $24.5 million of guarantees. He got torched so routinely this season that the Raiders released him after just eight games, for which he was paid $8 million. He then signed with the Redskins and resumed his underachieving ways.

Now if we can just unload someone else for some draft picks and cash that is owed in return…

The Anti-Vick makes a GREAT point with his reference to the most disappointing players in the NFL, as determined by Don Banks of SI.

The fact that so many of the “experts” who post on these blogs wanted to draft Dorsey and keep Hall shows how incredibly ignorant some folks in “da ATL” are.

More than likely, the buffoons who whined and sniveled for Dorsey and Hall are the same clowns who continue to mourn the absence of the conVICKted felon and truly despicable human being who once disgraced the uniform of the Atlanta Falcons.

I don’t think it is unfair to say wait and see what TD and Coach Smith accomplish this off-season(FA and Draft)before calling them the greatest thing since sliced pumpernickel. I personally think they are, but operating from the lower end(vs top end)of the pack is going to be more difficult. That 2nd round pick from the Raiders will help, however. Will AB keep the purse strings open to compete in the FA market? I think so.

I wonder whether this Don Banks had Mario Williams on his 2006 All-Disappointment Team.

Probably, considering that Williams had a mediocre rookie season while Reggie Bush had nearly 1500 total yards and Vince Young took over after an 0-5 start and nearly led his team to the playoffs.

Funny how that worked out.

Oh yeah, and what about those of us who wanted to trade down, accumulate extra draft picks, select 2nd team All-Pro offensive tackle Ryan Clady in the first round and a QB in the 2nd round?

M. Ryan struggles in playoff game: Falcons rookie QB Matt Ryan opened the regular season by throwing for a touchdown on his first pass. He opened the playoffs with an interception. For the first time this season, Ryan looked like a rookie. And it came at the worst possible time for the Falcons in a 30-24 loss to the Cardinals in a Wild Card playoff game on Saturday. “I don’t think it was nerves or anything like that,” Ryan said. “It was just a poor throw, a poor decision. The guy (Ralph Brown) made a good play. In games like this, hopefully we’re in them in the future, you can’t make those kind of mistakes.” Ryan finished 26-of-40 passing for 199 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also lost a fumble on a handoff. (Updated 01/04/2009).

Injury Report No information available at this time (Updated 1/10/09).

Fantasy Analysis Ryan had one of the most useful Fantasy seasons by a rookie quarterback in recent memory, topping 200 yards passing nine times and throwing more touchdowns (16) than interceptions (11). He clearly has a bright future and will likely progress enough next season to serve as a high-end No. 2 Fantasy QB if not a low-end No. 1. Think of him as somewhat of a sleeper. (Updated 01/04/2009).
QB Matt Ryan has thrown six interceptions over the last five games, including two against the Rams. He also threw a few high passes and missed wide receiver Michael Jenkins on a route in the end zone. But coach Mike Smith doesn’t sense that Ryan’s arm is getting tired. “It’s a long season for everybody, but I see no evidence whatsoever,” Smith said. “He threw the big long ball to Michael Jenkins. I don’t see anything different than what I saw from the first day that he walked on in terms of arm strength.” Ryan started 16 games and completed 265 of 434 passes for 3,440 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for an 87.7 passer rating. He led the Falcons to a 7-1 home record and totaled a career-high with 315 passing yards against New Orleans in Week 14 12/31/2008 Ryan was 26-of-40 for 199 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Atlanta’s playoff loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. 01/04/2009 Advice He also was tackled in the end zone for a safety and fumbled the ball on a handoff. It was a disappointing game for Ryan, the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, who had an outstanding regular season, leading the Falcons back to the playoffs with an 11-5 record after going 4-12 last season. This Titans-Ravens game has been really strange… usually when a team controls the line of scrimmage as well as the Titans have done all game, they will be up by two or three scores, but the Titans have allowed the Ravens to hang around. Usually good teams like the Ravens take advantage of such situations.

As far as the Flacco/Ryan comparisons… Flacco is bigger, stronger, more mobile and throws a better deep ball, but Ryan does a better job making his reads quickly and getting rid of the ball on time. I guess it depends on what you value more on a QB… Flacco has more pure playmaking ability, but Ryan is more likely to maintain rhythm and timing with his receivers. Clearly the Falcons and Ravens have shown this year that you can win with either one. Of course, as each player develops their strengths and weaknesses could change.

In April 2007, discovery of the elaborate dog fighting complex he owned in Surry County, Virginia led to criminal investigations by state and federal authorities, massive publicity, suspension from the NFL, loss of promotional agreements, and both federal and state criminal charges. In August, a U.S. federal district court convicted him and several co-defendants of criminal conspiracy. He began serving a time for a 23-month federal prison sentence that fall. In November 2008, he plead guilty to a single Virginia felony, receiving a three-year prison sentence and $2500 fine, suspended upon condition of good behavior. In return for the plea agreements, additional federal and state charges were dropped. He plans to enter a federal half-way house program in early 2009, a procedure often used for transitioning prisoners completing sentences. While there, he will be required to work at an “approved job”, with federal release likely in July 2009. His financial affairs were severely affected by lost income, legal expenses, and litigation, worsened by mismanagement and possibly fraudulent actions by a series of friends and financial advisers. In July 2008, he filed a personal reorganization bankruptcy with assets estimated at $12 million, and liabilities of $20 million, with current income (from prison work) of less than a dollar a day. During the same time, his attorneys estimated continued spending of $30,000 a month to support his mother, brother Marcus, and his three children and their mothers. Five months after initial filing, his attorneys told the court that they were still unable to account for over a million dollars of assets apparently spent during the preceding 2 years. As the judge heard the protests from his creditors about his filings and accountability, Vick’s attorneys told him that Vick “has every reason to believe that upon his release, he will be reinstated into the NFL, resume his career and be able to earn a substantial living”, which would be the primary source of funds to repay his creditors. However, the Newport News Daily Press noted that “some significant obstacles stand in his way.” Among these, are the NFL suspension, a failed drug test, and that he is still under contract to the Falcons, a major unpaid creditor, whose owner indicated Vick wouldn’t be welcome back on the team.

32 - where the Falcons’ “passing” offense ranked in Vick’s last season as a free man.

0 - the number of playoff appearances the Falcons made in Vick’s last two seasons as a free man.

I respect Matt Ryan. However, the true NFL Rookie Of The Year Joe Flacco just led his team to a monumental upset victory in Tennessee. Ryan stunk up the joint in Arizona. Looked more like Chris Miller than supposed franchise savior. Maybe he will FedEx that ROY trophy to Flacco. Its rightful owner! I can forgive a lot because of what Ryan delivered this season. That damn safety I cannot. No rookie excuse. Just do not get tackled in the mother (X) end zone! If Flacco takes his team to the Super Bowl they will win it all. No team in the NFC is at the defensive level of Ravens! Sorry, loss to Cards still leaves bitter taste. Completely unacceptable. At any damn level! Oh yeah, wrong guy got Heisman Trophy too. Let’s say for the sake of arguement, Joe Flacco has had a better season than Matt Ryan. Flacco #1 rookie QB, and Ryan #2. Flacco ROY, and Ryan not. Hell, Flacco is quite impressive. No doubt about that. Big arm. He can throw a longer ball than Ryan.

So that leaves Ryan as an exceptional second place rookie QB. Matt leads a poor team to an 11-5 season. Not too bad.

So why would he be attacked by Vick fans? Ryan had nothing to do with Vick. Why would they wish harm upon Ryan?

Vick’s attorneys told him that Vick “has every reason to believe that upon his release, he will be reinstated into the NFL, resume his career and be able to earn a substantial living”, which would be the primary source of funds to repay his creditors.

To all Vick Supporters, I will give you that when he wasnt killing dogs he was an exciting player to watch, but he wasnt gonna win a Superbowl. Matty Ice will just give him time. Flacco has won because he has one of the best defenses in the league. But bottom line arnt we all Falcons Fans? Im going to pull for whoever is going to take this team to the superbowl, and I think the majority of people will agree that that guy is Matt Ryan. What’r you guys gonna do, quit being Falcons fans and start to follow whoever he ends up with?

Ryan at home shootin hoops with his not so pretty girlfriend.

Looks like the Panthers need a qb…..but the Falcons will be to scared to let him go to a NFC South team because that will be 2 automatic losses. 10 more days and the real “process”, as mike smith calls it, will begin. Football will be fun to watch again in 09 with Vick being back. Glad I won’t have to watch Ryan’s feather looking passes anymore. Vick 09

I agree with Vick Supporter… not on the doom and gloom scenario for the Falcons’ future, but on Vick to Carolina being a viable scenario. Delhomme is a perfect example of how a below average quarterback can succeed with a good coaching staff, good offensive line, and talent around him. Clearly, though, the Panthers’ window of opportunity with their current team is not gonna be open a whole lot longer, and Delhomme is not the guy who is gonna put them over the top in that time span. They likely don’t have the time to watch a late-first round quarterback develop into a reliable option. So if they are looking to upgrade their QB in free agency, which they should, what better option than a minimum-salary player who has proven he can win games? Carolina’s coach and GM are well-entrenched to the point where they can afford to take the public relations risk, and having been burned by Vick in the past on the field they surely know the advantages he can provide at the QB position. I think it could work.

Unlike the Vick supporters who are marginally literate buffoons, Davenpoop-for-brains appears to have finished junior high school.

However, although he/she had demonstrated a somewhat limited grasp of the English language, Davenpoop-for-brains continues to show that he/she knows very little knowledge of the NFL.

While Vick was a great athlete and a dangerous runner, he was a very poor passer. As most of you know, in Vick’s last season as a free man, the Falcons ranked DEAD LAST in passing offense.

In addition, as Don Banks of SI pointed out during the dogfighting fiasco, word around the league was that Vick was either too lazy or too stupid to master an entire NFL playbook.

The fact that Vick’s coaches - you know, the guys who were with him EVERY SINGLE DAY on the practice field and in meetings - didn’t trust him enough to allow him to change plays at the line seems to confirm that Vick was/is an intellectual midget.

At the end of the day, the “fans” who value style (and race) over substance will flock to Vick, but no NFL team will be foolish enough to build a team around him.

He has proven himself to be a man of precious little character. And, by the way, he sucks as a passer.

That’s not exactly the kind of guy who will lead a team to an NFL championship.

P.S. All of the Vickheads who are praising Flacco for leading the Ravens to the AFC championship game should send a thank-you note to Barnacle “No Hands” Crumpler for his goal-line fumble.

@falcon21

You say that the stuff I say on here is unreal, just because my beliefs aren’t the same as yours, lol. Typical. There’s nothing wrong with supporting Vick, its a free country. Did he let down the Falcons? Yes. Do I care? Nope. I’m all for a man that wants to make amends for his mistakes, black or whatever color, and he deserves to do so. If Vick would have harmed a human being, of course things would be different, but he hurt no one but himself, he didn’t even hurt the falcon fans because he owed you nothing, plus you people never gave a “F” about him anyway. If it was you that fought dogs and went thru what he did, I would support you too.

Now, I see you like to talk about folks parents. Well lets talk about yours. I guess they never taught you any type of compassion except for people of your own kind. I assume they taught you that if anyone makes a mistake in life and goes to prison, they desever to be written off and ridiculed for life, even goes for your own kind…..sorta….depends on what they do. This is just what I’m taking from your “VS your parents ain’t sh!t” comment u made. U call Vick a loser, maybe u should look at yourself. I talk football unless I get some stupid comment like that from people like you. Also, whether your hate filled heart likes it or not, Vick will be back. Delhomme just “picked” his way out of Carolina, but the cowardly falcons will be sure to send Vick out of the conference, like some f’in B’s. They don’t and you falcons fans don’t want any part of #7 on another team. Vickuary 20th, 2009

“The fact that Vick’s coaches - you know, the guys who were with him EVERY SINGLE DAY on the practice field and in meetings - didn’t trust him enough to allow him to change plays at the line seems to confirm that Vick was/is an intellectual midget.”

Funny you should mention that, since the one time he defied his coaches and changed a play at the line of scrimmage, it resulted in an accurately thrown touchdown pass.

My fingers hurt from repeatedly educating y’all that the scheme was the reason Vick, the offensive line, and the receivers didn’t play up to their potential during the Jim Moron regime.

Under an intelligent coach like John Fox, assuming Vick is given a chance to drop back and throw like a regular quarterback and establish timing and rhythm with his receivers instead of running bootlegs and moving pocket plays every down, he will do just fine. Prediction guaranteed or your money back.

“At the end of the day, the “fans” who value style (and race) over substance will flock to Vick, but no NFL team will be foolish enough to build a team around him.”

First of all I’m not black or white. Secondly you are right, teams shouldn’t and won’t build around Vick. They will bring him in on a minimum-salary deal to be the missing piece of their offensive puzzle. Otherwise competent teams that currently start players like Jake Delhomme, Tarvaris Jackson, and Kyle Orton at quarterback will look at Vick as a guy who can improve one of their biggest offensive weaknesses, which is a lack of playmaking ability at the quarterback position. Coaches and GMs whose jobs are safe enough to take the public relations risk of signing a guy like Vick will be more than happy to roll the dice, because they know that everything dog-related will be forgotten after the first highlight-reel touchdown.

Sure, Vick brings baggage to any team that signs him. Nobody is gonna hand him a starting job without making him compete for it and earn it in preseason and training camp. But at the same time, the financial investment that will be required to sign him after the Falcons cut him will be very little compared to the production he can provide at quarterback, especially since his debts provide a very obvious incentive to work hard and play well.

“P.S. All of the Vickheads who are praising Flacco for leading the Ravens to the AFC championship game should send a thank-you note to Barnacle “No Hands” Crumpler for his goal-line fumble.”

Funny you should mention this… on the one hand you say Vick sucks as a passer, on the other hand you say his best pass receiver has no hands… but I don’t expect you to comprehend that you are contradicting yourself.

You’re definitely calmer than your counterpart VS2, but you don’t really seem to talk much football. You talk Vick. Or maybe Flacco. Or just anything anti-Matt Ryan or anti-Falcons. That and you talk back to whoever keeps getting you mixed up with VS2. My question is if you support Vick and obviously not the Falcons then why do you keep coming back here of all places? Is is just to keep fostering the dislike you have for the Falcons fans? Why bother with the bitterness of it all and some of the racial tensions. The people who are acting racist and say things about peoples parents surely know they are racist and idiots. So how are you making this better by talking back to them and saying that its typical of their kind, whatever that is. After a while you only sound just like them and you don’t want to sound just like them do you? I’m not saying you wrong just asking you why you keep this up. This is no place to support Vick because you know he won’t play here. Doesn’t make sense to me so I thought I would ask. Maybe you know something I don’t know. Maybe you know Vick and he knows all the support you give him on this blog and appreciates it. I kind of doubt it though. By the way, has the league commissioner said Vick can come back yet, because if he didn’t then there is no redemption until he does, if he does. Assuming that he is allowed to play in the NFL once more, the man can probably play well under a good coach with a good line. But he will have to learn all new stuff other than what he has learned before in the league because he was never taught right to begin with thanks to Mora’s dumb self. Like I say that is if the league commissioner lets him back in. The NFL has a new star every day so it can’t be all about a money and marketing thing I don’t think. I guess you know something I don’t know. Maybe all the sports writers should call you for inside info hee hee. No harm in hoping he comes back though. One thing I heard is that he is more likley to go to the UFL, and the commissioner there said that his chances at going there are at 98 percent. Don’t know how true that is. NFL pays more but is harder on you. One thing people skip on is Vick pays for his kids and their mothers. He has never been deadbeat dad and that’s good. Hope he plays again because somebody has to support them and that’s the best reason to let him play somewhere, so no family starves, as they do not deserve to be punished for what he did wrong.

VICK SUPPORTER 2

You’re confusing because you make no sense half the time. Ok maybe all the time. Every time Ryan does something good, you say it’s because of his recievers or because of his running backs. But with Flacco it’s just “FLACCO ROCKS.” You sure it’s not Flacco’s receivers or Flacco’s running backs making him look good, just like with Ryan? Flacco has one of the NFL best defenses to help him out and a head coach who has experience. Ryan had an sometimes okay defense, sometimes horrible defense and a rookie head coach with a whole different staff and scheme. You said without Vick we couldn’t make the playoffs. But we made the playoffs. You said time for Carolina to take care of what we couldn’t in the playoffs. Carolina got beat way worse than we did by the same Cardinals team. What you got to say about all that? And did Vick go 11-5 and playoffs in his rookie year? No he did not. What you got to say about that? YOU always compare Vicks numbers from his second, third, fourth, and fifth seasons with Ryans first year numbers, as if that’s fair. You say Ryan is a 72 million dollar bust after bringing us to the playoffs and a 11-5 record IN HIS FIRST YEAR. So how bad a bust is 130 million dollars for a guy who left us without a starting level quarterback and is still in jail and even bankrupt? How do you go bankrupt from 130 million dollars, I guess MC HAMMER could tell us, but this is the guy you call your hero? You cheering for a guy whos not even PLAYING? It would be better if you would just attach yourself to Flacco and the Ravens although that won’t be popular if they lose. By the way how many times did Vick take us to the playoffs? Twice. And he won two first round playoff games. Ryan has already been once. All he needs is a second appearance and two wins to match Vick. Not a lot to aspire to when you already made the playoffs your rookie year. If you going to be a Flacco fan then go find the Baltimore blogs. You have a better chance than a Panthers fan because you are wrong every time you say they are going to beat us or they will do better than us. You must have felt really stupid when the Cardinals beat them 33-14. Or will you ignore your own posts like usual. Anquan Boldin didnt even play against the Panthers. How sorry is that. At least we scored 24 points and made it close.

Flacco is taller, much stronger, and poised than the other QB.

Flacco clearly understands how to play the position bettter than a lot of veterans.

The guy is simply a winner. Two playoff victories on the road.

Most important attribute of a QB is to manage the game and not make mistakes. Flacco does it very very well.

Feedback on Delhomme from Panther fan that’ll you probably appreciate: Too early to tell. He did take it like a man and no teammates have thrown him under the bus, at least publicly. He is a crapshoot but I don’t know who else is out there. I was thinking the whole time last night that we cannot bench him no matter what because we have no second option. When I say “typical of their kind”, I mean that. There no need for racial comments on here, but when I get attacked w/racial terms because I defend Vick, as you said, I do say something back. Is it right? Depends. That doesn’t make me racist to defens myself.

You ask why I hate the Falcons? Vick may have let down the franchise by getting in trouble, but I find it funny that no blame gets placed on Mr.Blank, J.Mora, and McKay. Where’s the blame for them? Why is the totality of the situation all Vick’s fault? I hate the falcons for allowing Vick to be a 1 man show. I just find it odd that Ryan comes in and all of a sudden, Blank decides to get the right people make this a “team”. When Vick was here, he’s the only reason anyone came to the games, myself included. I hate that the falcons didn’t do it this way when Vick was here besides trying to sell out the dome. Its my opinion, as well as a lot of others. You should have Najeh break it down for you. Actually, Najeh, I would like to know your opinion on the organizational side of this whole Vick thing. The fans here just blame everything on Vick and look at nothing else. Vick 09

VS, You make your points in a rational fashion for what is an emotional topic for many. I would counter that Mr. Blank and McKay did try to bring in support for Vick in terms of signing Peerless Price (whom Dan Reeves did not want; no need to discuss) as well as drafting Roddy and Jenkins in the first round. I think for Mr. Blank the hardest part for him is he made Vick the highest paid player (and deservedly so for being a big reason the dome sold out) and then Vick lied to him when the whole dog-fighting scandal started to unravel. His other “scandals” leading up to it had to test the front office patience as well. And by giving Vick the big contract the team limited itself in terms of CAP space so it was really difficult to move beyond a 1 man show.

@AV

I agree w/your point, however, would you have turned down 130 million?? Peerless Price was a horrible signing, we had numerous failed draft picks. When you have a Superstar like Vick signed for a lot of money, like it is on every NFL Team that has a superstar, they build through the draft. Beside Roddy, who didn’t play up to potential during the Vick Era, the Falcons Failed in that aspect. I know it makes no sense to say this, but if we had a guy like Dmitroff building the team and Blank not trying to sign so called “big names” (and Vick not dogfighhting) I think we could have won the SB.

The biggest mistake of Arthur Blank era was firing Dan Reeves and hiring Jim Mora, Jr. Petrino hiring doesn’t even count it was so bad. And of course you don’t turn down 130 million. Pro receivers typically take a few years to develop.

Now back to the topic at hand…

Great year for the Falcons. Another highlight was Michael Turner dragging the Chiefs linebacker on his knees for five yards before shaking him off. And then when the linebacker gets up to pursue again Todd McClure (who had caught up with the play) takes him out.

No, the biggest mistake of the Arthur Blank era was drafting Michael Vick. He has brought myriad dissension, and problems to the city and franchise while wasting his God-given talent. He is pitiful, but his supporters are not. Their “hero worship” is ridiculously immature at best, and sick at worst.

To follow up on what Vick Supporter said at 1:04 PM… first of all, I will make one thing clear: I don’t blame anyone but Vick for putting himself in a position to go to jail. I think 23 months for dogfighting is a ridiculous sentence in a country where cruelty against other animals is widely accepted, but it’s still Vick’s fault he even put himself in that position.

But as far as “on the field” is concerned I agree with most of what VS said. When Vick was here the entire team was built on a style-over-substance approach. I don’t know how many times I said when Vick was here that the Falcons should spend first round picks on offensive linemen, that they should add size to the D-line to prevent the line from wearing down over the course of the season, that they should change the offensive line’s blocking scheme to one that can generate movement in short yardage situations, that they should acquire a true power running back to complement the speed of Vick, Dunn and Norwood, etc.

I don’t pretend to be some kind of football expert. These are not radical ideas. They are just observations made based on what has worked for every successful NFL team ever. Teams have won Super Bowls with mediocre QBs, mediocre WRs, mediocre secondary players, etc., but no NFL team has ever won a Super Bowl without controlling both lines of scrimmage consistently. Every Super Bowl winner has been able to a) protect the QB, b) open running lanes for the RB, c) get pressure on the opposing QB, and d) stop the run.

The style-over-substance approach was embodied by the coaching staff. If you look at successful coaches like Belichick, Cowher, Dungy, etc. the common thread is that they realize they have playmakers and they put them in the ideal position to succeed. Sure, if you throw 11 NFL-caliber athletes on the field they will make plays every now and then, but if you scheme to put them in the ideal position to succeed, they will make plays consistently.

In contrast, the philosophy of the Mora/Knapp/Donatell regime was that they have talented players and they believe in their scheme, so there’s no need to make adjustments, because it’s on the players to make plays. This is why Mora stuck with running bootlegs and moving pocket plays long after opposing defenses had clued on to them. This is why Donatell refused to blitz even when it became apparent that the front four was not getting any pressure. This is why Knapp refused to change the blocking scheme in short yardage situations even after the Falcons were stuffed time and time again at the goal line. This is why it took the Falcons a good two years of getting gashed on the ground before they signed Grady Jackson — to quote Mora, “size was secondary to scheme”. This is why they didn’t let Vick audible, because in their minds their play calls were fine and if the play didn’t work it’s because the player didn’t “make a play”.

Mora was often asked during press conferences about whether the coaching staff could have made adjustments to the scheme — his standard answer was “guys need to make a play”. That asinine, substance-less response pretty much sums up the attitude of the Mora regime. Nobody felt the effect of this approach more than Vick, the biggest playmaker on the team, and this is the reason why his development as a passer stagnated. Mora and Knapp were content to see him running around “making plays” like a college option QB, instead of investing the time to develop him into a reliable pocket passer. If the scheme calls for the QB to run around all the time, the line won’t be able to pass-protect as well, the wide receivers won’t have any timing with the QB, and the QB will have more pressure in his face, resulting in poor footwork and inaccuracy. On the few occasions when they called traditional pocket-passing plays for Vick on a consistent basis, he responded with the best passing games of his career.

The front office’s insistence on hiring coaches with mediocre qualifications like Mora and Petrino instead of those who’d had more NFL success like Lovie Smith or Ken Whisenhunt only compounded this problem. The Falcons hired Rich McKay at GM from Tampa Bay, but it became pretty apparent that Tim Ruskell was the real brains during McKay’s time in Tampa.

Of course, this year the Falcons finally decided to hire a GM in Dimitroff who has proven he can evaluate talent in the NFL in a successful organization, and a coach in Mike Smith who has gotten results on the field in Baltimore and Jacksonville. And what do you know, the Falcons pick a lineman in the first round, sign a running back who can run in short yardage situations, change the blocking scheme to one where linemen actually push players instead of diving at their knees, change the passing offense to one where the quarterback gets to stand in the pocket and build rhythm and timing with receivers, and change the defensive scheme to one that doesn’t play a prevent zone defense every down.

I was a Falcons fan before Vick came and I was a Vick fan before he joined the Falcons. So yeah, as a Vick fan, it does make me a little frustrated that Vick never had the opportunity to play under a real NFL coaching staff in a real NFL scheme, like Matt Ryan does. And it does make me a little frustrated that fans and the national media are so quick to attribute success and failure to quarterbacks when so many other factors play into the situation.

Sorry for the long post… feel free to skip over it if your attention span isn’t long enough.

“No, the biggest mistake of the Arthur Blank era was drafting Michael Vick.”

Vick was drafted during the Taylor Smith era. At least try to get your facts right.

I don’t think firing Dan Reeves was a mistake, because although he was a decent coach, he was not a good evaluator of personnel. But hiring Mora was a complete disaster. I wanted the Falcons to hire Lovie Smith back then, and I stand by that.

Vick Supporter,

I understand your anger towards the franchise. Without trying to defend Arthur Blank (who I figure you don’t like too much), I have this opinion to throw out there:

Blank is yet another example of a very wealthy guy who is not a sports guy. He likes sports just fine, but he’s not an expert. Not anymore so than Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavericks) is a basketball guy. These guys hire “experts”. Some of these guys are more hands-on and ego-driven. Cuban is, and so is Jerry Jones (Dallas Cowboys owner). Blank hired McKay, who had a nice resume and came from an organization that was currently doing rather well. Blank trusted McKay. And Blank had Vick, who was a marketing magnet, to say the least.

I watched McKay make one mistake after another, and wondered how this dude could mess so much up after doing so well in Tampa. But I digress. I figure McKay had tunnel vision. He couldn’t see the forest for all the red #7 jerseys in the stands (even in other stadiums). And he couldn’t see past all the dollar signs that Vick was generating. So it was probably easy to say that he kept Blank thinking that they would get over the hump and be successful if he just added one other player. If Vick just stayed healthy. He never gave Vick a good line. And, he brought in Mora and Knapp, which were nails in the coffin. Neither one of those clowns knew what the hell to do with Vick.

I think the change you see in Blank is him getting burned one good time. He got burned by McKay, he got burned by Mora, and he and Vick burned each other. Let’s not lie about it, Vick made Blank a hell of a lot of money. He was a rich man’s meal ticket for sure. McKay left him as a lone dog in a sled race. You can’t win a race with just one dog. I think what you see from Blank is a rich businessman recouping and not giving up on his pet project. It’s all about the money. And he learned how to better protect his investment. McKay taught him that.

If you think about it, Dimitroff’s resume is probably no more glowing than McKay’s looked on the surface. Blank learned a hard lesson. But he’s rich enough to recoup from it. Sadly, on the other end of the stick, Vick is not rich enough to make up for his mistake. And I can’t blame Blank for being unhappy with him. Vick should’ve know better, but that’s water on the bridge and both sides are paying their dues for what they did wrong, although naturally (or unnaturally) for Vick, the dues are heavier in proportion. At least Blank says he endorses the idea of Vick returning to the NFL. I don’t know that I’d blame him for not wanting him here, though. In the business world, image accounts for so much (regardless of right and wrong), and Matt Ryan is the new image. The new image that replaces the old one, and at roughly half the cost. Vick and Ryan have nothing to do with one another.

Here’s to hoping Ryan will be great (I think he will), and Vick can return to greatness (jury is still out, he has to make it back first). I agree that Dimitroff would have taken better care of Vick. And I think eventually Blank was going to fire or demote McKay anyway. It just happened sooner rather than later (not soon enough for me). Blank must be an okay dude, because I would have kicked McKay off the premises, not left him to handle marketing and other financial stuff. Just straight KICKED him out.

But hey, that’s just me.

Reeves was not good as a GM. Which coach out there can handle both? Even Holmgren had to be demoted. But to fire Reeves as coach and bring in Mora Jr. Ugh. At least Reeves commanded respect of his players.

Najeh,

Good post. As far as Blank goes, the money was good, and this guy is a businessman. Money is all there ever is. That, and Vick was a superstar with so much promise. After those playoff wins, it probably looked to Blank like it could be done the way McKay was doing it. Hell, McKay probably had an excuse for everything. I’m not absolving Blank of anything, though. I blame him for McKay. But McKay has no excuse. He did better in Tampa, even though he got another good coach fired (Dungy). He’s a football guy. He should know better. But he screwed things up.

Vick was drafted during the Taylor Smith era. At least try to get your facts right.

That’s just way too much to ask of some people. :)

If you come on here and say that Brooking has never made a solo tackle, and he’s never been a good player or, like Stendec, initially refuse to believe that he was our leading tackler this year…then yes I will say you have a significant anti-white bias. On the other hand, if your come on here and say, gosh KB is 33 and maybe we should be looking to the future…maybe he should take a paycut (like he’s done several times for this franchise) and come back and mentor whoever we get to replace him…and golly gee he is a five time pro-bowler who played on our only SuperBowl team…not to mention he’s never shot anyone in a strip bar… then I will not call you a racist. And you will get extra points if you admit that it was Milloy’s cover on the 3rd & 16 and that Milloy single-handedly lost that game for us…two TDs given up plus the 3rd & 16…and you will admit that Milloy is older than Brooking and has lost 4 steps. Also, Matt Ryan shouldn’t feel so bad about his 2 picks when a seasoned veterance like Delhomme threw 5, unbelievable! This season was more than I ever thought it would be, I thought before it started, 4-5 wins, max. Then, when we started to win, I wanted more! I am in serious withdrawal! You’re right about them being ready & competing in every single game, what a testament to Mike Smith, his staff & the players. If we had a defense, we might’ve gone far! I know veggie-head (that’s Dimitroff) will assemble some help on the D, we have a few good players just need to fill it out on that side of the ball. Please let Finn play out his contract!!!

“Ray” or whatever other “fake” name you go by. Oh, that’s not a fake name? It should be. In brief answer to your query: Yes, I read books. I write them, too. I also read essays…if they are worth reading. Yours do not fall into that classification. They just fall.

Once, in a Creative Writing class, we were told by the Prof. that most of the time you should be able to make your point in two paragraphs or less. If not, one of these two reasons might apply:

  1. Either you didn’t have your thoughts properly organized.

  2. What you said wasn’t worth saying in the first place.

I have exceeded that limit for clarity purposes.

I think that the emergence of WR Harry Douglas was a very important factor in the Birds success this year. Not only does he give the offense a legitimate threat of 3 very good receivers (along with Roddy White and Michael Jenkins), but he gave a very much needed boost to special teams as an exciting punt returner who can take it to the house on any given punt return.

“It would be nice if you stand by that.” Vick Supporter makes that comment regarding my assertion that I have never made a racial comment on this blog. Well, I don’t appreciate the condescending way you “acknowledge” it. It sounds more like “If you’re not lyin’(and I think you are)…” To which I reply: If you have some evidence that I am lying then produce it. Otherwise, STFU and go on with your charade about a “return” that has as much chance of happening as Steve Bartkowski’s.

I will say this……alot of the negative things that people say on here about Vick comes from pure hatred. i can understand the fact that they hate him for dogfighting (they pretty much act like he invented dogfighting). The thing that gets me is this……..I grew up in a small, majority white, town in Oklahoma and the white folks fought dogs on a regular basis. Not trying to be racist, but the media, and alot of white folks, made this bigger than it really is. Although Blacks don’t like dogfighting either, I’m not one to condemn any man for figting dogs. They deserve to do some time (not 2 years in prison and lose everything), but this whole thing was totally overblown. Vick was made an example of, plain and simple. He didn’t help himself by having the “look” that whites despise, i.e, conrows, tatoos, and all that physical stuff that shouldn’t matter. Its really a sad day in our country that dogfighting gets more coverage than the war in Iraq or these oil and water companies that are raising prices for no reason at all. The dogfighting was bad…….the good thing is that we get to witness a once in a lifetime QB make things right for himself and make something positive in his life again. The NFL will be fun to watch again. It was really great to see McNabb carve up the Giants and was able to use his legs to convert big third downs. Vick will do this on a higher level than anyone who’s ever played the game

It is interesting the Vick’s Supporter begins his latest diatribe with the words I will say…! Those are the operative words of everything he says. Let’s get that straight. They are not facts; but instead what he thinks.

It is also interesting that he closes with a tribute to what McNabb did to the Giants(and it was considerable)with no acknowledgment of what Warner did to the Panthers. Of course there was no “racism” involved. Or was there?

Will Delhomme return to Carolina next season? Posted: January 11th, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Carolina Panthers, Derek Anderson, Jake Delhomme, Michael Vick

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images Tampa Bay is no longer the lone NFC South team expected to be looking for a quarterback this offseason.

With his woeful performance Saturday night, Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme made Tarvaris Jackson look like Bart Starr.

In fact, the five interceptions Delhomme threw Saturday night were two more than Starr threw in his entire postseason career that consisted of 213 passing attempts. With his 39.1 passer rating (which seemed more like 0.0), Delhomme now is in the conversation for the worst game ever by a quarterback in a big spot.

Now the question becomes what will happen to Delhomme, especially considering that he carries a team-high $11 million salary-cap figure for next season. If the Panthers release Delhomme, they would save a whopping $6.325 million against next season’s salary cap — perhaps enough to pursue another quarterback such as Cleveland’s Derek Anderson or even Michael Vick.

Besides the team achieving much more than anyone possibly expected (especially on the defensive side of the ball), my most vivid (and recent) memory of this season was the BS safety against the Cards, in spite of the fact he was still upright and completed a pass to Turner that would have gotten at LEAST a TD.

As far as offseason, I’m greedy and want Asomugha, Vilma, Haynesworth and Peppers; draft well, save money by letting Brooking and Boley go; Milloy’s a great leader but depends how reasonable his demands are salary wise whether he goes too. Move Anderson to LB (Terrell Suggs style) and give him a chance there before deeming him a complete bust. How are these things not reasonable or doable?

Falcon Football Anyone on here ever talk about it??

By mars

Peppers is on my wish list. With he and Abe pushing the tackles, our cornerbacks might show some improvement. I hate to admit it, but I’d like to see Tebow plugged in @ tight end (with cameos @ H-back, fullback, and occasionally QB.) We REALLY need linebackers.

Flacco’s is doing a fantastic job. I have nothing negative to say about him. I don’t believe he would have been happy as a Falcon though. Then, no matter how much he won, he would constantly be referred to as a “bust” for no good reason.

“We’re just stating facts that you people fail to see, even though they are proven facts. Your analysis is mostly hate towards a person that never did anything personally to you.” Now, this is a statement that could very easily describe SOME peoples abusive feelings toward Matt Ryan.

By mars

What if it came down to a choice between Haynesworth or Peppers? Who do you choose? And why?

By mars

January 12, 2009 5:43 PM | Link to this

Despite the fact that he’s a hated Gator, Tebow is an exceptional athlete and football player whose talent would be wasted at quarterback on the pro level. How’s that for irony?

By mars

January 12, 2009 5:57 PM | Link to this

Dogbyte, I’d be happy with either one, with a slight edge to Peppers. Reasons; a)QB’s would lose their minds just thinking about Peppers on one end and Abe on the other, b)we’re stuck with J Anderson (salary cap), and in my opinion he is better suite for DT that DE (possible cause of lack of production), and c) Grady is getting old. He’s not an every down player anymore, and we need to find another huge butt to “nose” up to center. Hayneworth’s not the kind of player to be satisfied with freeing up the MLB. Now on to linebacker. Would the acquisition of either Haynesworth or Peppers leave enough cap room to pursue Suggs?

WOW. Focus on work for a day and this place goes nuts. You obviously don’t need my input. However, hope your boy has better luck getting signed than he has selling his crib.

Bids for Vick’s Sugarloaf home start at $3.2 million The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday, January 12, 2009 Falcons’ incarcerated quarterback Michael Vick filed a motion in federal bankruptcy court on Friday officially requesting an auction sale of his Sugarloaf home.

• The property has been shown on over 30 occasions in an attempt to sell. Price does not include dog cages or rape stands.

By Dogbyte

January 12, 2009 7:22 PM | Link to this

Mars—These are my thoughts. Although the Falcon’s needs seem to be more a pass rushing end, I would go with Haynesworth. The reason? He is a destroyer of both run and pass. And having him and Abe on the same side would create blocking problems that few, if any, teams could solve. Other than that, we should re-sign Foxy and Coy Wire and get a lb and safety from the draft.

By Dogbyte

Why can’t this blog be more about what Mars and I are attempting to do? We don’t agree, but I am not calling him names…or is he calling me names. We are discussing something that is relative to our team. Try it. You may like it.

VS2: Checked out that list. It doesn’t have Seattle on it. Mora has hired Greg Knapp and appears to be putting the band back together.

Also, looked up the last 10 No. 25 picks in the draft. It’s a hit (Beason, Carolina) or miss (Freddie Mitchell) spot.

LAST 10 — 25th picks

2008 — Mike Jenkins, CB, Dallas, South Florida

2007 — Jon Beason, MLB, Carolina, Miami

2006 — Santonio Holmes, WR, Pittsburgh, Ohio State

2005 — Jason Campbell, QB, Washington, Auburn

2004 — Ahmad Carroll, CB, Green Bay, Arkansas

2003 — William Joseph, DT, New York Giants, Miami, Fla.

2002 — Charles Grant, DE, New Orleans, Georgia

I’ve never been a fan of trying to project based on what picks have been made in a particular slot in the past. The needs and situations of the teams mentioned above were entirely different in every way except for their record the previous season, which could have been a fluke, a sign of things to come, or another successful year in a string of successful years. You could call pretty much any pick somewhat “hit or miss” too, if you look through past history.

Loved this line from VS2’s link: “Why would Oakland sign Michael Vick if they just drafted Jamarcus Russell?? The logical answer to this question is: Because Al Davis is an idiot.”

I sincerely, truly hope that Vick doesn’t sign with Seattle. Dear Lord please don’t curse him with Jim Mora and Greg Knapp again.

MY CAROLINA PANTHERS

WHY, OH WHY, DID MY PANTHERS CHOKE IN THE PLAYOFFS?

I WAS FINALLY RIGHT ABOUT LEAF LOSING A GAME AND WAS SO HAPPY HE DIDN’T HAVE A CHANCE TO BRING THE FALCONS FROM BEHIND

SPEAKING OF COMING FROM BEHIND………………..

MV7 WOULD LOOK GREAT IN CAROLINA COLORS

I CAN JUST IMAGINE VICK OVER THROWING STEVE SMITH AND HIM COMING BACK TO THE HUDDLE AND PUNCHING THE GREATEST QB EVER IN THE FACE.

STEVE SMITH ON WHY HE PUNCHED MIKE VICK IN THE FACE: “I JUST WENT BACK TO THE HUDDLE AND ASKED HIM WHAT IN THE HELL HE WAS THINKING THROWING THE BALL SO HARD WHEN I WAS JUST 5 YARDS AWAY. HE JUST STOOD THERE WITH A CONFUSED LOOK ON HIS FACE SO I PUNCHED HIM. HE STARTED ROLLING ON THE GROUND MUMBLING SOMETHING ABOUT HOW HE DOESN’T KNOW WHO HE IS ANYMORE OR SOMETHING CRAZY LIKE THAT.”

There is greener grass and better fans and teams and money to be made!! 1039 yards rushing 20 TD’s passing no other player in the history of the game has done both in one season only Superman Mike Vick!!!!

Do we really need to go the racist route on here? Look, I’m from Western NY, but lived in Atlanta for a while several years ago. I’ve been a Falcon’s fan for over 15 yrs (since Jr. High), so here are my observations on both Vick/Ryan and the race issue.

First, I loved Vick when he played for us. There were some games he all but won on his own. BUT, his inability to stay in the pocket and throw first, to read defenses and throw a catchable ball rather than a laser beam every time prevented him from taking things to the next level. If he put those tools together and used his running and general athleticism as a supplement rather than the primary source of his productivity, he’d have been unstoppable. As for the dogfighting thing, I think he was either too compassionate or too stupid to shake some very unsavory people from his past, and he got wrapped up in the dogfighting, for which he is paying his time. Once he’s done with his sentence, he deserves another shot. But you can’t blame Blank for not wanting to be the one to give him that shot; there are too many distractions a la Vick/Burress/Jones/Henry/etc in the league that few owners would want risking big money on given patterns of past transgressions, or even a failure to develop as a quarterback (Vick). Ryan had the best rookie season since Marino, and a better season statistically than Eli Manning and many other qb’s, with a less complete team around him. He doesn’t have the scrambling big-play ability of Vick (who ever has), but he’s already a more complete QB. I actually wanted the Falcons to keep Schaub and trade Vick well before the dogfighing thing, mainly because of Vicks inability to develop his pocket passing ability. This is a football assessment, not a racial one.

As far as people, both white and black, making racist accusations, you’re both ignorant. Don’t assume someone like’s Vick because they’re both black, or don’t assume a black person is unemployed or can’t have a decent job. Conversely, don’t assume someone likes Ryan better because he/they are white. The color of a person’s skin is a random occurrence of birth, and nothing a person should derive pride nor shame from. White’s have done despicable things in this country, but do we really want to whine about things that happened 150 years ago? Find a Jew who hates all Germans because of the Holocaust, and that was much worse and much more recent. Besides, it’s not like the whites invented slavery; everyone has had and kept slaves (including African’s) throughout history. Let’s stop focusing on our superficial differences; let’s stop deriving shame or pride from the random color of our skin. Instead, just try to be a decent person and leave the ignorant people to flounder in their own bubble of stupidity.

Reality, Roddy White was able to crawl out from under the bus Vick threw him (and the other WR’s) under and have back to back 1000+ yard seasons when he had real QB’s throwing to him.

Mike from NY…I guess your heart is in the right place but:

  1. You really should get your facts straight,

and

  1. You really are cluless about race relations in this country.

Please read the following excerpt written by one of your White bretheren.

Of National Lies and Racial America By TIM WISE For most white folks, indignation just doesn’t wear well. Once affected or conjured up, it reminds one of a pudgy man, wearing a tie that may well have fit him when he was fifty pounds lighter, but which now cuts off somewhere above his navel and makes him look like an idiot. Indignation doesn’t work for most whites, because having remained sanguine about, silent during, indeed often supportive of so much injustice over the years in this country—the theft of native land and genocide of indigenous persons, and the enslavement of Africans being only two of the best examples—we are just a bit late to get into the game of moral rectitude. And once we enter it, our efforts at righteousness tend to fail the test of sincerity. But here we are, in 2008, fuming at the words of Pastor Jeremiah Wright, of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago—occasionally Barack Obama’s pastor, and the man whom Obama credits with having brought him to Christianity—for merely reminding us of those evils about which we have remained so quiet, so dismissive, so unconcerned. It is not the crime that bothers us, but the remembrance of it, the unwillingness to let it go—these last words being the first ones uttered by most whites it seems whenever anyone, least of all an ‘angry black man’ like Jeremiah Wright, foists upon us the bill of particulars for several centuries of white supremacy. But our collective indignation, no matter how loudly we announce it, cannot drown out the truth. And as much as white America may not be able to hear it (and as much as politics may require Obama to condemn it) let us be clear, Jeremiah Wright fundamentally told the truth. Oh I know that for some such a comment will seem shocking. After all, didn’t he say that America ‘got what it deserved’ on 9/11? And didn’t he say that black people should be singing ‘God Damn America’ because of its treatment of the African American community throughout the years? Well actually, no he didn’t. Wright said not that the attacks of September 11th were justified, but that they were, in effect, predictable. Deploying the imagery of chickens coming home to roost is not to give thanks for the return of the poultry or to endorse such feathered homecoming as a positive good; rather, it is merely to note two things: first, that what goes around, indeed, comes around—a notion with longstanding theological grounding—and secondly, that the U.S. has indeed engaged in more than enough violence against innocent people to make it just a tad bit hypocritical for us to then evince shock and outrage about an attack on ourselves, as if the latter were unprecedented. He noted that we killed far more people, far more innocent civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki than were killed on 9/11 and ‘never batted an eye.’ That this statement is true is inarguable, at least amongst sane people. He is correct on the math, he is correct on the innocence of the dead (neither city was a military target), and he is most definitely correct on the lack of remorse or even self-doubt about the act: sixty-plus years later most Americans still believe those attacks were justified, that they were needed to end the war and ‘save American lives.’ But not only does such a calculus suggest that American lives are inherently worth more than the lives of Japanese civilians (or, one supposes, Vietnamese, Iraqi or Afghan civilians too), but it also ignores the long-declassified documents, and President Truman’s own war diaries, all of which indicate clearly that Japan had already signaled its desire to end the war, and that we knew they were going to surrender, even without the dropping of atomic weapons. The conclusion to which these truths then attest is simple, both in its basic veracity and it monstrousness: namely, that in those places we committed premeditated and deliberate mass murder, with no justification whatsoever; and yet for saying that I will receive more hate mail, more hostility, more dismissive and contemptuous responses than will those who suggest that no body coun t is too high when we’re the ones doing the killing. Jeremiah Wright becomes a pariah, because, you see, we much prefer the logic of George Bush the First, who once said that as President he would ‘never apologize for the United States of America. I don’t care what the facts are.’ And Wright didn’t say blacks should be singing ‘God Damn America.’ He was suggesting that blacks owe little moral allegiance to a nation that has treated so many of them for so long as animals, as persons undeserving of dignity and respect, and which even now locks up hundreds of thousands of non-violent offenders (especially for drug possession), even while whites who do the same crimes (and according to the data, when it comes to drugs, more often in fact), are walking around free. His reference to God in that sermon was more about what God will do to such a nation, than it was about what should or shouldn’t happen. It was a comment derived from, and fully in keeping with, the black prophetic tradition, and although one can surely disagree with the theology (I do, actually, and don’t believe that any God either blesses or condemns na tion states for their actions), the statement itself was no call for blacks to turn on America. If anything, it was a demand that America earn the respect of black people, something the evidence and history suggests it has yet to do. Finally, although one can certainly disagree with Wright about his suggestion that the government created AIDS to get rid of black folks—and I do, for instance—it is worth pointing out that Wright isn’t the only one who has said this. In fact, none other than Bill Cosby (oh yes, that Bill Cosby, the one white folks love because of his recent moral crusade against the black poor) proffered his belief in the very same thing back in the early ’90s in an interview on CNN, when he said that AIDS may well have been created to get rid of people whom the government deemed ‘undesirable’ including gays and racial minorities. So that’s the truth of the matter: Wright made one comment that is highly arguable, but which has also been voiced by white America’s favorite black man, another that was horribly misinterpreted and stripped of all context, and then another that was demonstrably accurate. And for this, he is pilloried and made into a virtual enemy of the state; for this, Barack Obama may lose the support of just enough white folks to cost him the Democratic nomination, and/or the Presidency; all of it, because Jeremiah Wright, unlike most preachers opted for truth. If he had been one of those ‘prosperity ministers’ who says Jesus wants nothing so much as for you to be rich, like Joel Osteen, that would have been fine. Had he been a retread bigot like Falwell was, or Pat Robertson is, he might have been criticized, but he would have remained in good sta nding and surely not have damaged a Presidential candidate in this way. But unlike Osteen, and Falwell, and Robertson , Jeremiah Wright refused to feed his parishioners lies. What Jeremiah Wright knows, and told his flock—though make no mistake, they already knew it—is that 9/11 was neither the first, nor worst act of terrorism on American soil. The history of this nation for folks of color, was for generations, nothing less than an intergenerational hate crime, one in which 9/11s were woven into the fabric of everyday life: hundreds of thousands of the enslaved who died from the conditions of their bondage; thousands more who were lynched (as many as 10,000 in the first few years after the Civil War, according to testimony in the Congressional Record at the time); millions of indigenous persons wiped off the face of the Earth. No, to some, the horror of 9/11 was not new. To some it was not on that day that ‘everything changed.’ To some, everything changed four hundred years ago, when that first ship land ed at what would become Jamestown. To some, everything changed when their ancestors were forced into the hulls of slave ships at Goree Island and brought to a strange land as chattel. To some, everything changed when they were run out of Northern Mexico, only to watch it become the Southwest United States, thanks to a war of annihilation initiated by the U.S. government. To some, being on the receiving end of terrorism has been a way of life. Until recently it was absolutely normal in fact. But white folks have a hard time hearing these simple truths. We find it almost impossible to listen to an alternative version of reality. Indeed, what seems to bother white people more than anything, whether in the recent episode, or at any other time, is being confronted with the recognition that black people do not, by and large, see the world like we do; that black people, by and large, do not view America as white people view it. We are, in fact, shocked that this should be so, having come to believe, apparently, that the falsehoods to which we cling like a kidney patient clings to a dialysis machine, are equally shared by our darker-skinned compatriots. This is what James Baldwin was talking about in his classic 1972 work, No Name in the Street, wherein he noted: ‘White children, in the main, and whether they are rich or poor, grow up with a grasp of reality so feeble that they can very accurately be described as deluded—about themselves and the world they live in. White people have managed to get through their entire lifetimes in this euphoric state, but black people have not been so lucky: a black man who sees the world the way John Wayne, for example, sees it would not be an eccentric patriot, but a raving maniac.’ And so we were shocked in 1987, when Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall declined to celebrate the bicentennial of the Constitution, because, as he noted, most of that history had been one of overt racism and injustice, and to his way of thinking, the only history worth celebrating had been that of the past three or four decades. We were shocked to learn that black people actually believed that a white cop who was a documented racist might frame a black man; and we’re shocked to learn that lots of black folks still perceive the U.S. as a racist nation—we’re literally stunned that people who say they experience discrimination regularly (and who have the social science research to back them up) actually think that those experiences and that data might actually say something about the nation in which they reside. Imagine. Whites are easily shocked by what we see and hear from Pastor Wright and Trinity Church, because what we see and hear so thoroughly challenges our understanding of who we are as a nation. But black people have never, for the most part, believed in the imagery of the ‘shining city on a hill,’ for they have never had the option of looking at their nation and ignoring the mountain-sized warts still dotting its face when it comes to race. Black people do not, in the main, get misty eyed at the sight of the flag the way white people do—and this is true even for millions of black veterans—for they understand that the nation for whom that flag waves is still not fully committed to their own equality. They have a harder time singing those tunes that white people seem so eager to belt out, like ‘God Bless America,’ for they know that whites s ang those words loudly and proudly even as they were enforcing Jim Crow segregation, rioting against blacks who dared move into previously white neighborhoods, throwing rocks at Dr. King and then cheering, as so many did, when they heard the news that he had been assassinated. Whites refuse to remember (or perhaps have never learned) that which black folks cannot afford to forget. I’ve seen white people stunned to the point of paralysis when they learn the truth about lynchings in this country—when they discover that such events were not just a couple of good old boys with a truck and a rope hauling some black guy out to the tree, hanging him, and letting him swing there. They were never told the truth: that lynchings were often community events, advertised in papers as ‘Negro Barbecues,’ involving hundreds or even thousands of whites, who would join in the fun, eat chicken salad and drink sweet tea, all while the black victims of their depravity were being hung, then shot, then burned, and then having their body parts cut off, to be handed out to onlookers. They are stunned to learn that postcards of the e vents were traded as souvenirs, and that very few whites, including members of their own families did or said anything to stop it. Rather than knowing about and confronting the ugliness of our past, whites take steps to excise the less flattering aspects of our history so that we need not be bothered with them. So, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for example, site of an orgy of violence against the black community in 1921, city officials literally went into the town library and removed all reference to the mass killings in the Greenwood district from the papers with a razor blade—an excising of truth and an assault on memory that would remain unchanged for over seventy years. Most white people desire, or perhaps even require the propagation of lies when it comes to our history. Surely we prefer the lies to anything resembling, even remotely, the truth. Our version of history, of our national past, simply cannot allow for the intrusion of fact into a worldview so thoroughly identified with fiction. But that white version of America is not only extraordinarily incomplete, in that it so favors the white experience to the exclusion of others; it is more than that; it is actually a slap in the face to people of color, a re-injury, a reminder that they are essentially irrelevant, their concerns trivial, their lives unworthy of being taken seriously. In that sense, and what few if any white Americans appear capable of grasping at present, is that ‘Leave it Beaver’ and ‘Father Knows Best,’ portray an America so div orced from the reality of the times in which they were produced, as to raise serious questions about the sanity of those who found them so moving, so accurate, so real. These iconographic representations of life in the U.S. are worse than selective, worse than false, they are assaults to the humanity and memory of black people, who were being savagely oppressed even as June Cleaver did housework in heels and laughed about the hilarious hijinks of Beaver and Larry Mondello. These portraits of America are certifiable evidence of how disconnected white folks were—and to the extent we still love them and view them as representations of the ‘good old days’ to which we wish we could return, still are—from those men and women of color with whom we have long shared a nation. Just two months before ‘Leave it to Beaver’ debuted, proposed civil rights legislation was killed thanks to Strom Thurmond’s 24-hour filibuster speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate. One month prior, Arkansas Governor Orville Faubus called out the National Guard to block black students from entering Little Rock Central High; and nine days before America was introduced to the Cleavers, and the comforting image of national life they represented, those black students were finally allowed to enter, amid the screams of enraged, unhinged, vicio usly bigoted white people, who saw nothing wrong with calling children n**** in front of cameras. That was America of the 1950s: not the sanitized version into which so many escape thanks to the miracle of syndication, which merely allows white people to relive a lie, year after year after year. No, it is not the pastor who distorts history; Nick at Nite and your teenager’s textbooks do that. It is not he who casts aspersions upon ‘this great country’ as Barack Obama put it in his public denunciations of him; it is the historic leadership of the nation that has cast aspersions upon it; it is they who have cheapened it, who have made gaudy and vile the promise of American democracy by defiling it with lies. They engage in a patriotism that is pathological in its implications, that asks of those who adhere to it not merely a love of country but the turning of one’s nation into an idol to be worshipped, it not literally, then at least in terms of consequence. It is they—the flag-lapel-pin wearing leaders of this land—who bring shame to the country with their nonsensical suggestions that we are always noble in warfare, always well-intended, and although we occasionally make mistakes, we are never the ones to blame for anything. Nothing that happens to us has anything to do with us at all. It is always about them. They are evil, crazy, fanatical, hate our freedoms, and are jealous of our prosperity. When individuals prattle on in this manner we diagnose them as narcissistic, as deluded. When nations do it—when our nation does—we celebrate it as though it were the very model of rational and informed citizenship. So what can we say about a nation that values lies more than it loves truth? A place where adherence to sincerely believed and internalized fictions allows one to rise to the highest offices in the land, and to earn the respect of millions, while a willingness to challenge those fictions and offer a more accurate counter-narrative earns one nothing but contempt, derision, indeed outright hatred? What we can say is that such a place is signing its own death warrant. What we can say is that such a place is missing the only and last opportunity it may ever have to make things right, to live up to its professed ideals. What we can say is that such a place can never move forward, because we have yet to fully address and come to terms with that which lay behind. What can we say about a nation where white preachers can lie every week from their pulpits without so much as having to worry that their lies might be noticed by the shiny white faces in their pews, while black preachers who tell one after another essential truth are demonized, not only for the stridency of their tone—which needless to say scares white folks, who have long preferred a style of praise and worship resembling nothing so much as a coma—but for merely calling b****** on those whose lies are swallowed whole? And oh yes, I said it: white preachers lie. In fact, they lie with a skill, fluidity, and precision unparalleled in the history of either preaching or lying, both of which histories stretch back a ways and have often overlapped. They lie every Sunday, as they talk about a Savior they have chosen to represent dishonestly as a white man, in every picture to be found of him in their tabernacles, every children’s story book in their Sunday Schools, every Christmas card they’ll send to relatives and friends this December. But to lie about Jesus, about the one they consider God—to bear false witness as to who this man was and what he looked like—is no cause for concern. Nor is it a problem for these preachers to teach and preach that those who don’t believe as they believe are going to hell. Despite the fact that such a belief casts aspersions upon God that are so profound as to defy belief—after all, they imply that God is so fundamentally evil that he would burn non-believers in a lake of eternal fire—many of the white folks who now condemn Jeremiah Wright welcome that theology of hate. Indeed, back when President Bush was the Governor of Texas, he endorsed this kind of thinking, responding to a question about whether Jews were going to go to hell, by saying that unless one accepted Jesus as one’s personal savior, the Bible made it pretty clear that indeed, hell was where you’d be heading. So you can curse God in this way—and to imply such hate on God’s part is surely to curse him—and in effect, curse those who aren’t Christians, and no one says anything. That isn’t considered bigoted. That isn’t considered beyond the pale of polite society. One is not disqualified from becoming President in the minds of millions because they go to a church that says that s** every single week, or because they believe it themselves. And millions do believe it, and see nothing wrong with it whatsoever. So white folks are mad at Jeremiah Wright because he challenges their views about their country. Meanwhile, those same white folks, and their ministers and priests, every week put forth a false image of the God Jeremiah Wright serves, and yet it is whites who feel we have the right to be offended. Pardon me, but something is wrong here, and whatever it is, is not to be found at Trinity United Church of Christ. Here’s my thought’s on free agency and the draft; pending cap numbers and player availability, go after (in this order) Asomugha, Hayneseworth, Vilma and Peppers. Maybe try moving Anderson from DE to OLB (a la Terrell Suggs); bolster O line and LB’s in draft, unless a great Safety or catching/blocking TE too good to pass up is available.

My main reflection was just waiting for the Falcons to go into a 3 or 4 week tailspin and they never did…This season just goes to show you that all you need is to get into the playoffs and anything can happen….Philly and Ariz. in the NFC championship game?????????? I also realize that as promising as this team is that it doesn’t take much to go from 11 -5 to something much worse….the 2009 schedule is going to be tougher and it’ll be more difficult for us to get into the playoffs…I just hope we can get some help on defense…

P.S. Thanks for the blog Orlando….I am a disabled veteran who is retired and enjoy reading other peoples thoughts on the Falcons and other sports issues…..I just hate that people need to use this priviledge we have to sound off on their own personal viewpoints about things most of us aren’t interested in hearing…..

I am extremely disappointed with the Falcons playoff run. I know that the Falcons are a better team than the Arizona Cardinals and the Philly Eagles because their record is better than both of them. Its unfortunate because if the Falcons dont turn the ball over against the Cardinals, I think they beat the Cardinals and get to face Philly in the NFC championship game for sweet revenge. I SAID IT BEFORE AND ILL SAY IT AGAIN — THE FALCONS COULD HAVE BEENS SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS THIS YEAR. Of the NFLs final four teams, Im sure the Falcons can beat all of them. I think the AFC is stronger than the NFC but that notwithstanding the Falcons were good enough to get to the Superbowl. That they are NOT playing in the big game at SuperSunday is a HUGE disappointment. I read somewhere today that the Falcons would like to acquire Julius Peppers. That is a very easy and smooth transaction to accomplish. Simply trade Mike Vick for Julius Peppers straight up and we land one of the greatest defensive players in the history of the NFL. Case closed.

JuliusCesaer[sic] Julius Peppers is going to be a free agent. So unless the Panthers re-signed him AND then traded him(unlikely),a trade of Vick for him would be worthless. Hopefully, we can sign him as a free agent and trade Vick for draft choices.

Peppers is an unristricted free agent so there will not be a trade for him. I think he will be to pricey, and keep the Falcons from filling other voids. I would rather see Suggs here and try to add some depth to the secondary. With Suggs on the other side of Abe, and draft a good DT (I like Raji from BC late in the first round) our D line could be a force. Mike from NY I love the idea of getting Asomugha…but I think I am sure the Raiders will slap the tag on him. Haynesworth is a monster, but has had issues with injuries. I guess we will see how it all pans out. As far as trading Vick for draft choices, I am not sure that is feasible. He has been out of the league for two years now. There will be a lot of uncertainty surrounding his character, and teams will be reluctant to pay to high of a price for him due to the fact he has been out of the game for a couple of years. I think a 4th round pick will be a stretch, a fifth may be more likely. It would be a lot easier to measure if anyone had any certainty as to how sharp he would be once he returned. Maybe someone will be willing to take a risk and give a little more, I mean Denver drafted Clarette in the third, and Oakland took a kicker in the first before…so anything is possible.

The Falcons blew their chance to go to the Superbowl. As I mentioned in an earlier BLOG, the two remainding teams to decide their entry into the superbowl had worse winning percentages than the Falcons this year. In order words, the Falcons had a better record (11-5) than both the Eagles (9-6-1) and Arizona (9-7). This does not mean the Falcons were a superior team but it shows me that they did have the talent to make it to the superbowl and they forfeited that opportunity by playing lousy against the Cardinals. The Falcons played great in quarter #2 against the Cardinals and therefore went into intermission at halftime leading the game 17-14. Then the Falcons came out into the third quarter of the Cardinals playoff game flatter than a pancake and subsequently lost the game to a vastly inferior team. It certainly hurts because most falcons fans are so giddy about Mike Smith (being named coach of the year); Matt Ryan (being named rookie of the year); the Falcons first post-season appearance in a while; Mike Turner finishing the season with over 1500 yards and a pro-bowl appearance; Roddy White finishing the year with over 1000 receiving yards and making the pro-bowl; All of those accomplishments mean nothing unless you at least make it to the superbowl which is where the Falcons failed. I think the Falcons had the BEST overall talent in the league but couldnt prove it on the field because of their inexperience and their being intimidated by other teams. The Falcons could have easily gone 14-2 this season, because I felt that they were badly outplayed in just two games this year; the first carolina game and the first tampa game. The other three losses the Falcons had, Denver, Philly and New Orleans the Falcons should have won those games. In the Atlanta Falcons you are looking at a team that could have and should have won the superbowl this season, but they couldnt because they didnt believe they were good enough to even make the playoffs much less win a playoff game. Its really a shame that they wasted ALL OF THAT TALENT. And what do you think will happen when Michael Vick returns. Vick will probably get his starting job back at quarterback and we will finally make it to the superbowl. Got to be like Mike!

There is a very quick, simple, painless way for the Falcons to snag Julius Peppers. Would you like to know what that is? Simply trade Peppers for Mike Vick. Thats it? That is the biggest no-brainer in the history of the world. vick for peppers or peppers for vick. We dump someone who will never play football again (Vick) for someone who plays with the greatest passion in the NFL (Peppers). No one will object to that trade because Vick was once the highest paid player in the league, so Vick should return one of the games highest paid and most expensive players coming back (Peppers). We could trade for Vick for almost anyone great and that would mean a substantial improvement in the club. Since Vick will probably get cut anyway and we we probably wouldnt get back dog meat for Vick, lets go ahead and trade Vick (while he is still a member of the Falcons roster) for one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL.

GoldenRetriever You were not one of my brighter “patients” but you have gotten even dumber. As has been said on here 10 times, or more, Peppers is a FA. So, if you “trade” for him all you will get is to watch him walk out the door. If the Falcons are to get Peppers they are going to have to bid for him with other teams. Now, here is a dog biscuit. Sit!!

So you think Matt Ryan is a chump. Are you that desperate to make friends with VS and VS2? Here are some of your very own words from the Bird Babe blog titled Defense lets down Falcons:

January 7, 2009 2:54 PM: By bigeasy830, I cannot argue to much about the drafting of this years ROY.

January 8, 2009 10:56 AM: By bigeasy830, I have nothing against Ryan. He was widely considered the best QB in the draft. I really had no problem with them drafting him if not Dorsey or Ellis. I think the only bad move was trading 2 second round picks for Baker.

I now see why you put big in front of easy830. You’re full of sh**!

I salute Joe Flacco! I’m all for him to do even more. But, the brain-deads on here will not acknowledge that Flacco had a lot more support than Ryan did. Granted, the Falcons on both sides of the ball busted their @sses, but more talented players on other teams busted their’s as well. Reversed, I think Matt would have done as well as Flacco, or better. But, it wasn’t reversed and Flacco did the best with what he had to work with. I am hopeful that TD will give Matt a similar cast to work with next season. Meanwhile, go Flacco!

By The truth man, you people don’t understand what it takes to make a championship team. That is why the Falcons will make the play-offs every two or three years and you all will be happy with that. I use to be a Falcon fan but F the Falcons Arthur Blank and Matt Ryan. if the Falcons wanted to build a Super Bowl caliber team they would have drafted a D-lineman, I wanted Dorsey but would have settled for Ellis and drafted a QB in the second round. I wanted Flacco or Henne if they chose to do so. But, I would have been happy with Redman as my starter. What you and some others don’t understand is that Baltimore won only 5 or 6 gaames last year and they missed the play-offs. Joe Flacco madea bigger difference to that team than you all give him credit for. I am not a Falcco bandwagon guy. Check the archives I liked Flacco since before the draft. Now, who’s the brain dead one. We are right and Ryan is the next coming of Danny Weurfell. The last three games of the regular season and the play-off games are true indicators of his skills. He has been exposed. Next season the Falcons will win no more than 5 games. TO those who love to blog about the 2008 record, the 08 season is over for the Falcons. They are sitting at home just like Detroit.

Your lameness manifests itself everytime you trash Ryan when in other posts you claim to have no problem with him. At least the Vick Supporters picked a side and stayed on it. You keep screaming about how we should have taken a DT instead of Ryan. Name one d@mn team that has picked a DT in the first round and made him the cornerstone of the franchise. You said that Dorsey’s stats weren’t bad for a rookie DT, but then say Ryan is a chump even though he won ROY, passed for over 3,000 yds, pro bowl alternate, and most importantly helped lead a left for dead franchise to the playoffs. What did you say after the last preseason game this year? Didn’t you say the Falcons would go like 2-14 with Ryan as our starting QB? WOW, you sure do know your football! Not to worry, a lot of people were suprised by the turn around including me, but the sad thing is, you’re still making bogus lame @$$ predictions while still pretending like your just keeping it real. You’re faker than Vick when he was being investigated by the Feds.

The VICK SUPPORTERS out there are incredibly stupid. They have some sick, misguided, convoluted belief that Mike Vick will return to the Falcons and take back his starting quarterback job; leaving Ryan to carry the clipboard for Vick, the same way Matt Schaub used to do. VICK SUPPORTERS, your theory is foolish and totally nonsensical. Vick will never return to the NFL ever again. Vick still has to face punishment and suspension from Roger Goddel and Goddel may suspend Vick for 10 years just to make an example out of him. VICK SUPPORTERS please, I am begging you to GIVE UP YOUR SUPPORT FOR VICK because you are simply wasting your time and you are annoying, aggravating, irritating and littering the BLOGS with nonsensical foolishness that will never happen again. Just bag it so that we can all have peace again on the blogwaves. Thanks.

Newsflash for Vick Supporters: Mike Vick just escaped from prison and it was announced by carrier pigeon that Vick will return to the starting lineup next year as starting quarterback, moving Matt Ryan (Leaf) to backup quarterback to Vick. Truth man, I’m just someone who has been accused of not providing proof when stating situations that we all know happened, but that the previous mentioned pair demanded proof in the form of a link to someones written column (as if THAT wouldn’t just be someones opinion, but actual proof). Proof is required when it’s anything they disagree with. When it’s something they DO agree with, then the proof is in the assertion and no more proof is necessary. Everyone else is unfair and must prove their statements unless agreeing with them. “Do as I say, and not as I do.” The definition of hypocrisy.

Truth man, see archives from January 3, 09 Schultz- “This was not how Falcons were supposed to end.” You’ll see what I’m talking about.

VS2 you have single handedly destroyed the myth about matt ryan. How you accomplished this is remarkable. Arthur blank is looking to pay you to stop these damning posts.

Indeed on the 20th the experiment will be over.

Yeah, wow! That McNabb sure put a hurtin’ on the Cards. Whoa! What a massacre. That should show how weak Matty Ice and the Falcons were, to lose to Arizona! And that Flacco, woo-hoo! Did he ever put it to the Steelers! That should prove who the real Rookie of the Year is. Vick Supporter 2, how DO you do it, man? I’m in awe!

It was fun watching the team gel and feed off each other. In the beginning the defense didn’t play that well….but picked it up midseason and played at a higher lever. It was fun and look forward to seeing the Falcons in the playoffs next year!

Playoff run? That wasn’t a playoff run. They made it in, which I am very happy and proud of them for, but a run infers that they won games in the playoffs and moved on. Either way, I am very much looking forward to seeing what our team can do next year. If we can inprove our defense, we may actually have a run in the playoffs. Go falcons
