Falcons focused in final practice

Tempe, Ariz. — Just got back to the hotel after watching the Falcons go through their final practice.

The team looked focused, but not too tight.

But we have to give an “AJC game ball” to photographer Curtis Compton. He did the major work this morning.

The Falcons did not want any video or still photos of their final practice, so CC hiked up the mountain behind Arizona State’s Sun Devil Stadium and took his long lens with him.

After hiking up the mountain — he said it took about 20 minutes — CC found out that the pressbox blocks the view of the field. So he got a great view of the Valley, but nothing of the Birds.

So, he gets an A for effort, an “AJC game ball” and he got his cardio workout in for the day.

There are several subplots to wild-card game:

Which quarterback will shine, the wily old veteran Kurt Warner or the rookie Matt Ryan?

How will the Falcons secondary hold up against the Cardinals vaunted passing attack?

Will the Falcons be able to get some pressure on Warner?

Who’s going to slow down Arizona’s Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson?

Can Michael Turner get loose on the road? He averages 129 yards at home and just 83 on the road.

Will Jerious Norwood run with some authority like he did last week?

Abraham, Anderson and Milloy are listed as questionable for the game. Abe and Milloy have to play and be near 100 percent for this. Chauncey Davis and Kroy Biermann have been solid while filling in for Anderson.

You’d think that if your team hasn’t hosted a playoff game since 1947 that you wouldn’t have any trouble selling out. But the Phoenix fans were slow to snap up the tickets. One factor is the league comes in and jacks up the price on playoff tickets. The Cards received an extension from the league and soldout before the deadline.

Off the field, offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, a former head coach, is being sought by the Detroit Lions. Rich McKay is still being connected to a Cleveland front office job, although Scott Pioli appears to be the front-runner.

Although quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave is more than ready to be an offensive coordinator, the Falcons don?t want to lose Mularkey. The MM — Mularkey & Musgrave — tandem needs to stay together just based off the work they’ve done with Ryan this year.

OK, let’s get back to the game.

Send some predictions in. Falcons XX, Cardinals XX. Support your score with some reasoning.

As the objective beat reporter I get to share mind with only close family members and the neighbor’s dog. But my colleague Jeff Schultz should have one in his predictions column. (BTW my neighbor’s dog is a little down today. He belongs to a Georgia Tech family.)

If Abe can’t work his magic its likely to be a long day. This offseason the pass rush needs some work.

Looking for Norwood to take one all the way this week.

The Falcons just need to execute and not turn the ball over. Even if it’s close and they are trailing, don’t panic, just play. They are the better team on this field, don’t forget it. Falcons 20 the other birds 17.

The Cardinals will win and win big! The problem for the Falcons won’t be the players who may or may not be missing. The problem will be the arrogant attitude that has spread from the fans to the team. The Falcons, like the Patriots in last year’s Super Bowl, have absorbed the idea that showing up means they win. Somebody forgot to tell the Giants they didn’t have a chance against the Patriots and the Cardinals, no doubt, have taken umbrage at the disparagement they’ve been subjected to. There’s trouble in the home of Michael Turner and trouble at home often begets trouble everywhere else. Cardinals-45, Falcons-10!

Falcons 34 - Cardinals 27

I typically call it unrestrained offense, particularly if no Milloy and limited Abe. We never seem to blow out the other team (okay, except for Detroit.)

We need our guys to SHOW UP, physically and MENTALLY.

This is a great team that has far exceeded expectations, but now we fans are spoiled. We want it all. (Leave it to me to put the FAN in Fanatic!)

Keep in mind that in the beginning of the game Arizona will attempt to stack 8 in the box (including Adrian Wilson) to shut down the run. Atlanta must use a multitude of players on offense to keep the Cardinals on their toes.

I have a feeling that Harry Douglas will break a big play tomorrow. Also, since Arizona will be sooooo focused on Abraham they will forget about guys like Curtis Lofton and Koy Biermann who will sneak in and make plays against Warner and the offensive line.

They may not be able to shut them down but at best they will rattle Arizona and force them into turnovers.

This won’t be the shootout that many predict, but I do believe that Atlanta will do just enough to win and move on to the next round.

I cannot say enough about the dramatic turnaround this team has made since last year. I am more than ecstatic about us being in the playoffs’

However, I am a little concerned about some of the expressions from our Management, specifically Arthur Blank and Tom Dimitroff. Hear me out!!!

Although I know they along with all of us loyal Falcon fans should be more than pleasantly surprised at our showing this season and our making the playoffs. However, I think they should be careful of the subliminal messages being sent from their public utterings. Things such as…” I think we have exceeded expectations”…… These things can have an impact on the psyche of players. Hopefully they are still hungry for more success and don’t rest on their haunches and be satisfied with where they are. They have to want more as we all know, it is no guarantee in this league of parity and free agency that we’ll be back there again. When a team gets a small opportunity in this league they have to grasp it with both hands!!!!

So let’s hope our Falcons have not allowed these utterings of “accomplishments” to seep through the subconscious but rather use the success so far to be added motivation for even more success!!!!

GO FALCONS!!!!!

Nuff respect!!!!!

This defense, although porous at times, have made plays at the end of games to get the win. I think the falcons go as turner gos in this one. Matt doesnt have to be peyton manning in this game, he just has to manage the game and avoid the turnovers. falcons are able to run the ball and win the special teams battle. They win, but not by much. Falcons 28 - cardinals 27 in regulation.

FALCONS VS ARIZONA MATCH-UPS

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80dc9e8f&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

Matt Ryan, the newly minted Offensive Rookie of the Year, is smart, efficient and has displayed the moxie of a seven-year veteran. His stats won’t blow you over, but his leadership is outstanding. However, in Ryan’s past three games, he completed just 56 percent of his passes. No matter; Atlanta still won. Thanks to Turner

Michael Turner, the league’s No. 2 rusher behind Adrian Peterson, rushed for 1,699 yards and 17 touchdowns, and has been the Falcons’ MVP. Concerns about his durability have been discarded following a December output of 491 yards and four TDs. He is getting stronger. Jerious Norwood is one of the NFL’s fastest players. .

This one’s one the defense; the whole defense. Despite the yards per game given up, the D has been solid in the red zone and I expect to see that on Saturday.

Bend but don’t break is still not a good playoff philosophy, so I sincerely hope the D Coordinator has a better plan than the one we have seen at times. Don’t just leave it all on 55 to bring the pressure. Since our LB’s can’t/won’t cover we may as well send them on some blitzes. They may not get there but maybe we can disrupt old man Warner’s timing.

DOL please sneak up to the Falcons hotel and remind the cornerbacks to look for the ball. They are going to be injured getting hit in the head by flying footballs one day real soon.

We may not win a shoot out, so a good winning score for the Falcons would be 28-13. If it ends up 38-31, we may have a problem.

NFC 6-MOST IMPORTANT

————ESPN.COM————-

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs2008/news/story?page=hotread16/nfcpeople

Give rookie quarterback Matt Ryan and first-year coach Mike Smith a ton of credit for Atlanta’s surprising season. But the most important person in the turnaround and in any success Atlanta might have in the postseason is Michael Turner.

After four seasons behind LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego, Turner finally got his chance as a feature back, and he has been a workhorse. He’s the key to the Falcons’ offense — and even to their defense.

Turner’s success running the ball has prevented defenses from putting too much pressure on Ryan, and that has allowed the rookie quarterback to thrive. Turner has meant just as much to the defense and may mean even more in the first-round game against Arizona.

Turner has the ability to move the chains and keep the clock moving. That helps keep the defense fresh and could help keep Arizona’s explosive offense off the field.

The fact that they are in the playoffs is a testament to a solid plan (by Dimitroff) and then solid execution (by Smith, Muiarkey, etc) and the players. It’s really amazing that this franchise is FAVORED, let alone in the playoffs. More than four wins would have been a success in 2009 with the amount of work that had to happen in the aftermath of BP and MV’s departures.

falcons: 24—cards: 17; my hope is we get some turnovers and enough punts that they can’t score; we control the ball 35 minutes plus and make enough plays to score more points; the Turner story hit the AJC in the metro section a couple of days ago so I’d guess it’s correct; you’ve got to have hope!

Everyone will be expecting the run. Falcons open with Play Action, then Run, Run, Pass… All the way to a 6 play opening scoring drive. The defense will take its lumps though.

Final score:

Atlanta - 28 Cardinals- 24

Congratulations to the Atlanta Falcons’ organization from top to bottom; and a special applause for the twelfth player, the Atlanta Falcons’ fans. After the organization and the twelfth person survived a daunting 2007 season, the success of this year gives real meaning to an old cliché; “just wait until next year.” And without any further ado, let’s get on with the business of winning the Lombardy Trophy.

The Falcons has had good success on the west coast. They soared to the west coast twice during the regular season. Let’s take a walk down memory lane. Do you remember week #9 of the National Football League when the Atlanta Falcons took flight in search of their prey, the Oakland Raiders. On the flight to Oakland, they glided gracefully over Arkansas, and Kansas City Missouri was just to the north. But on that particular Friday, there were no excursions as they steadfastly sailed toward Oakland…Arriving in Oakland early, the Falcons immediately sounded the clarion call of their Head Coach, Mike Smith, “It’s going to be tough sledding.” The “Law Dog”, Lawyer Milloy, displayed a list of draconian penalties for anyone catching the football over the middle…And should the Raiders have corners or a corner that’s got his swagger back, but soft in run support, Michael Turner, Jerious Norwood, and Jason Snelling will have record performances. The Falcons won, 24-0.

And there was week #13 of the National Football League. Do you recall when the Atlanta Falcons took to the friendly skies, due west, toward Qualcomm Stadium to battle the San Diego Chargers? While flying over the clouds to avoid inclement weather near Roswell New Mexico, they looked north into Colorado and observed narrow, back, and country roads which led to holding pens. Someone had corralled herds of wild horses and locked the gates… There was water, hay, and alfalfa everywhere. And there were burly men nearby adorned in silver and black. Out of curiosity, the Falcons considered turning north. But once again, the Law Dog, Lawyer Milloy, who brings the element of “proceed with caution” to the secondary, laid down the law. He reminded the team of the twenty-four hour rule. And their minds were stayed on the next city and state, Phoenix Arizona. After Phoenix, there was San Diego California, and Qualcomm Stadium. A surprise attack on the Chargers and another win on the road are seconds away. Prepare to descend everyone! …T minus ten seconds and counting, 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-touchdown. …The Falcons won, 22-16.

In the playoffs, the third flight out west will prove to be a charm too. Look for the Falcons to play some of their best football and capitalize on turnovers. The Falcons have shown over the past several weeks that they can’t lose with the “stuff” they use. And they have won under adverse conditions time and time and time again. Now it’s about time for other teams to show if they have the stuff to overcome difficult conditions. The Minnesota Vikings failed in their attempt after suffering four turnovers. The Arizona Cardinals are up next; and they will go down for the count.

We’re extremely proud of the Falcons’ success this year; so I think I’ll sing a song. Alright, here we go Falcons’ fans. And ah 1 and ah 2 and ah 3 and ah – abra abracadabra-2-3-4-1-the Falcons will reach out and grab ya-ask the San Diego Chargers 22-16. Abra abracadabra-2-3-4-1-the Falcons will reach out and grab ya-ask the Minnesota Vikings 24-17. Abra abracadabra-2-3-4-1-the Falcons will reach out and grab ya-ask the St. Louis Rams 31-27. Abra abracadabra-2-3-4-1-the Falcons will reach out and grab ya-ask the Arizona Cardinals 41-23. Abra abracadabra-2-3-4-1-the Falcons will reach out and grab ya-ask our next playoff opponent 31-21. Abra abracadabra-2-3-4-1-the Falcons will reach out and grab ya-check out the NFC championship game 31-21. Abra abracadabra-2-3-4-1-the Falcons will reach out and beat ya-check out our Super Bowl opponent 31-21-and when you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything you heart desires will come to you-Matt Ryan, you and the Atlanta Falcons just won the Super bowl. What are you going to do next? “I’m going to Disney World!”

VS2, you’re post in right on. If the Falcons are to win we need Turner, Norwood and maybe even Snelling to move the chains and keep the ARZ offense off the field. If they do it should open up our passing game just enough to contribute. I know matchups can be tricky, but the ARZ passing game is the only area where they have any kind of advantage. Abraham could neutralize part of that, but I’m concerned if Milloy can’t go. Bottomline, I think the Falcons win because they’re a more balanced, better coached and just plain better team!

The key to a Falcons’ win will be BALL CONTROL—period. We can run the ball and they can’t stop the run. Based on these factors we win time of possession battle and the game. Also this TEAM is well coached and will be focused in all phases. I expect big plays from Ryan, White, Jenkins and Douglas via play action and a solid performance by Turner. Our offensive line will impose its will. I also expect Abraham to dominate and an emphasis on tackling to keep yards after catch to a minimum. The Rams’ game was used by VanGorder as an experiment with blitz packages in preparation for the Cardinals. We have the personnel to get to Warner—they just need to disguise the blitz more effectively this week. With that said I believe Warner will be pressured all day. Falcons 31 Cardinals 17. GO FALCONS!!!

@cb If the Falcons were practicing the blitz against the Rams then they need to practice coming up closer before the snap. You can’t effectively blitz from 6+ yards off the line. If that’s a disguise then the only one being fooled is the Falcons.

@VS2 You’re such a cynic. Nobody said it was going to be easy. Boldin and Fitz might get a little bit. Then again, Houston, Fox, and the rest of the defensive backs are due for a good game. The d-line got some pressure last week without Abe or Milloy. Father Time caught Favre, maybe it’s Warner’s turn to look his age. Plenty of good reasons the Falcons win this one, take a stunner at Carolina (or NY), and (dare we hope) a home game for the NFC Championship.

Falcons20 Cardinals 15 I think that the Cards get 500 yeards of offense, but can’t move the ball inside the red zone, even with Hightower doing gut dives. Busy day for the kicker Rackers (I think that’s right). Falcons start slow, couple of Elam FGs, then Turner finds the end zone before the half, and again in the 4th quarter. Ryan will look OK, going 14-19, for 180ish with no TDs, no INTs.

@Exodus Mentality, The defensive scheme utilizing more blitz last week had an inordinate number coming from Fudge. Whether this was by design (Fudge’s speed advantage over Milloy) or down and distance the package needs better execution. And as you pointed out blitzes initiated 5-9 yards off the line, as well as delayed blitzes, won’t be effective against Warner (we don’t have the corners)but a better disguised package should be effective. They have last week’s game film to better evaluate their personnel in a game situation applying this package. This coaching staff will use it to their advantage today because they realize, as we all do, that the key to success on defense will be pressure on Warner and I don’t think we can apply enough without an effective blitz. Still Falcons 31 Cardinals 17. Enjoy the game Falcons’ faithful we’re back in the playoffs! Being a fan since 66 I enjoy these moments. GO FALCONS!!!

Arrived in Phoenix last night - Falcon have the better team and should win - things I worry about - Cards took a beating in press and on TV for mailing in against the Patriots two weeks ago - pros are proud guys and clearly want to show the press and everybody else wrong on at National stage. Cards have not demostrated much of a running game, but have a player who has been a great runner, he is rested and ready ( Edgar James) when a defense is geared to play pass it is easy to run and the Cards have two great receivers and a QB if given time is as good as anybody in the business. If we have to play too many snaps without Abraham we could have some trouble - I don’t think we can hold coverage on the Cards receivers without a pass rush. When any tean plays on the road before a packed house you are going to have some procedure penities, because your offensive line has trouble with communication. It’s is crtical today to start fast some the fans don’t have much to cheer about. I know Curt Warner (not well) but like him you can bet we will have to defense his A game.

Overall we have the best team and the better coached team, nobody in the league has a better coached offensive line I am betting on our guys, but have pre game jitters.

Blank has put a team together - GM, coaches & players we can be proud of - we will get their best shot and I for one will be there to cheer them on.

Aggressive Falcon front defense gets chewed-up by Warner with underneath the coverage; 8 yard passes combined with 10 - 12 yard runs burn the birds. Tack on long throws by Warner and you have a score of Az 32, ATL 18.

Turner runs for near 100 and Ryan has 2 picks. Roddy White is silent.

Sorry I love the Falcons but the defense is exposed today and the young quarterback has too much weight on his shoulders.

Falcons are going down! Yeah, to the fourth floor, going to get a massage, They are excited. I do worry the falcons have had the hardest time against the teams they are supposed to beat. Overconfidence? I don’t know. The last poor run defense they faced was Denver, they were expected to run wild, didn’t happen. They were favored against N Orleans and the Rams too. They never have been a good favorite but 1-2 points ain’t much of a favorite. Why has the spread dropped? More money shifting to Arizona. The public likes the Cardinals, have you seen the publics batting average on the bowl games? C Berman likes the cardinals too. That’s good as every time he was on the falcon bandwagon they lost this year. I hope he is wrong this time too. I wouldn’t be suprised if it was closer to 21-17 or lower though. I just hope the falcons score the most. As for the Turner story, that is nixed with the E James ” I’m leaving” story so that one’s a wash. The biggest story is that last week Az played a bad team and won like they were supposed too while the Falcons played a bad team and barely won. What can be read from that??? Maybe Arizona was better rested, after all they took the week off in New England while Atlanta had a tough game with the Bucs. Mularkey will interview with Detroit because you have to out of respect so you will be considered for future openings, but he is smart enough not to leave for a faux-organization like Detroit. I would like to see McKay go to Cleveland though, maybe we could trade Jamaal Anderson for their first pick next year.

The Cards have the better the team on both sides of the ball. The only edge the Falcons have is in the running game. The Cardinals will probably once again strictly play this game in the air, maybe running only a handfull of running plays. They can pick apart the Falcons secondary if they play to their potential. This game is all on Warners shoulders, and Warner has turned out some really crappy games this year. If Warner shows up to play, Cards will win this one big. It would be a shame too, since the NFC west is one of the lousiest divisions in the NFL right now besides the AFC west. If they were playing in Atlanta, I’d think it would be a much closer game. Turner will still get his 100 yards tonight, but Ryan will buckle to the pressure of his first playoff game.

In any case, I hope the Falcons can pull this off, but I’m afraid they won’t be much of a match to Arizona’s offensive firepower.

Cardinals 31, Falcons 24… the Falcons will get off to a quick start, as usual, but then will become complacent in the second … Warner and company will go to work quickly and end Atlanta’s “we score first, we win” streak…

A great run this year (I grew up with this team and have been a fan since 1974), but this game will be “one to grow on” for the Falcons…

BTW: In the off-season, let’s keep Mularkey and deal Vick to Detroit for Calvin Johnson and their No. 1 draft pick… Matt Ryan to Calvin Johnson for 10 years will land them both in the Hall of Fame (and, let’s face it, Michael Vick is the perfect remedy for what ails the Lions… he will bring the fans back, and probably win at least one game all by himself…)

I hope all you nay sayers will be back on the bandwagon next week after we destroy the cardinals.Support your team and get behind them.win or lose it has been a fun year.I for one believe we will win this game.we are the better team.we are a mush more balance team than the Cardinals. The only thing that concerns me is playing on the road and thats something we’ll have to over come.I believe our defence will take over this game.

The Cardinals went 9-7 on the most pathetic division in the NFL. The 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams. Whoopididoo!!! The ONLY playoff team they beat is MIAMI. They lost to Carolina, Giants, Eagles, Vikings (even to a close playoff team like Jets and Patriots they got beat bad!). 6 of their wins they swept SF, STL, and SEA. Wow! ATL beat Carolina, San Diego (road), and Minnesota (road). Yes, anything can happen - but Falcons should win this one since Cardinals struggles against good teams.

Hey geniuses,

The Turner story was given so little attention bc it was a non-story. The police officer quoted as much.

I also find the anti-dog sentiment on here amusing. dogs are 100 percent more loyal than people. Vick found that out when his “boys” testified against him to save their own asses.

Falcons win a close one, 17-14

It’s easy to see why the AJC is in such finacial trouble. Why would you insist on sending still photogs to road games? How much does that cost, $2,500, $3,000? Have you heard of The Associated Press? Game ball to CC? For getting some rather lousy pictures from a hill? Big egos, bigger expense reports. Sheesh.

Falcons win 30-24. We’ll run on them early and I believe we’ll build up a sizable lead, then AZ will have to air it out, and ALMOST come back. I too believe Abe is key and this prediction hinges on him playing. look for some weakside safety blitzes, otherwise deep zone because they have no running game. We’ll have the ball for at least 35 minutes today. oh………………… and Mr. Calhoun. PLEASE send me the name of your dealer. You, my man, are on that GoodGood!!!

Falcons 24 Cards 23 A tight game with Kurt Warner putting up some big numbers, but with a lack of a running game - Abraham and Babineaux get some heat on Warner late and force an interception or fumble to preserve the Falcons win. Matt Ryan will be OK, but Turner will gain 120 yards on the ground and help control the clock.

A couple of key points here:

1) Both Atlanta and Arizona went undefeated against the NFC West.

2) Atlanta was 10-5 against the rest of the league, Arizona was 3-7

3) Against common opponents, both went undefeated against St. Louis, both lost to Philly, both lost @ Carolina (although Atlanta beat Carolina at home), Falcons beat the Vikings on the road while the Cardinals lost to the Vikings at home.

4) For those who think that somehow Arizona’s defense is going to make Matt Ryan buckle under the pressure, this is a team that let a Tarvaris Jackson lead vikings team beat them in Arizona.

5) The Cardinals haven’t beaten a single team outside of the hapless NFC West since Oct. 12., which was also the last time they beat a team with a winning record.

6) The Cardinals haven’t beaten a playoff team in OVER THREE MONTHS (sept 14th). The Falcons beat a playoff team TWO WEEKS ago.

7) The Falcons are going in riding a winning streak while the Cardinals have been blown out in 4 of their last 6 and have only managed wins against a 2-14 team and a 4-12 team. The falcons, by all accounts have great chemistry. Edge James has just said he wants to play for another team.

Ryan Leaf is a first round bust of San Diego that never had anything to do with the Falcons. In order to avoid another first round bust at QB, San Diego traded the rights to draft Vick to the Falcons and they experienced all the pain and suffering that came with him.

On January 20, 2009, Vick will get the news of whether Commissioner Goodell will ban Vick for life, or allow children who are NFL fans to have one bad example for hero worship.

Vicksucker, petitions won’t work! Roger Goodell will suspend Vick for an additional year, once he’s released from Federal custody. He’s been unavailable to serve a suspension of specified length. Once he is available, Goodell will bring the hammer down on this mental pygmy!

The Rams having a 2-14 record is a fluke, based on Stephen Jackson being injured most of the year. He only has been healthy for the last few games. Stephen Jackson is someone whom the rest of the NFL considers a dynasty can be built around. And after watching the way he ran through Grady Jackson and Curtis Lofton, the rest of the NFL may be on to something. Oh wait a minute, I almost forgot. This statement is a known fact, and Vick fans don’t allow known facts to interfere with their argument. Sorry guys! Broke your silly rule. My bad.

Although I am 14 years his senior. But what you are spewing is foolishness. Take a look at the score. The Falcons are up 17-14 at the half. They took the Cardinals best shots and are in the lead. So just enjoy the game and comment on the game. Not ancient history.

Your whole team choked, not just Brooking. The Falcons clearly did not play like their normal selves. Still the Cardinals tried to give the Falcons the game and they could not take advantage of it. It really should have been a blowout. Take it as a learning experience ATL, your team is headed in the right direction and Dimitroff will make some needed changes to the team next year.

WHAT WAS “KEITH BROOKINGS” THINKING!!!!!

It’s 3rd down and 16 yards to go for the Cardinals. The Cardinals tight end leaves the line to run for a pass. Keith Brookings runs along with him for about three steps and then decides to run up to the line of scrimmage to cover another receiver receiver who’s running across the middle only 3 yards from the line of scrimmage.

Lofton is already standing there in the middle of the field, doing his job, eyeing the receiver who’s running across the field.

IT WAS KEITH BROOKING’S JOB TO STAY WITH THE TIGHT END, BUT BECAUSE HE DIDN’T, THE TIGHT END WAS LEFT WIDE OPEN FOR A 16 YARD FIRST DOWN.

What a bone-headed play. I think Keith Brookings forgot that it was third and 16 for the Cardinals; there was no reason for him to be worrying about the receiver near the line of scrimmage when Lofton was already standing there in the middle, as middle linebacker, watching this reiver.

We would have stopped the Cardinals, who would have punted the ball, and we would have had nearly two minutes to run our offense to win the game.

Even the television announcer said, “WHAT WAS KEITH BROOKING THINKING!!”

I think you need to go back and TIVO the play…both Brooking and Lofton were in the middle of the field and both came up to cover the running back…everyone blames Brooking, but nobody seems to have the Falcons defensive playbook at hand. Crabapplejoe, I think your stuck in last season. Brooking is not the MLB, Lofton is. That is Lofton’s assignment. Brooking should have stuck with the tight end. Its all over NFL network from people who used to play and get paid to break down plays so you really have no argument. But to be fair it shouldn’t have even came down to that play.

Mr. Ledbetter, I beg you to answer this question: Why has the AJC not broken down that 3rd and 16 play at the end where either Lofton or Brooking were out of position. 2 important things: 1. they should not even let keith brooking on the flight home - he is AWFUL and is a liability on the defense. Why do you bite on the up man when the tight end is open on 3rd and 16??? I cannot watch him NOT make plays anymore. 2. The need to revamp the playoff seedings for home field. I agree you should get a playoff spot for winning your division, but i don’t think it’s right to reward a team like the cardinals because they play in 5AAAA high school division where no team is even AT .500…

By G

First of all, the “finger-pointing” is directed to the team as a whole. Black and white, offense and defense, the entire team “dropped the ball”. Matt looked like a good rookie, and Mallowy and Brooking showed their age.

However, the most notable improvements for next year is on the defensive side. J. Anderson and K. Brooking are the most notable replacements. Anderson and Brooking have been the most consistent players in “not getting the job done”. Brooking has been blowing coverage all season, along with pile jumping. His shortcomings in pass coverage has finally caught with him. Brooking’s time has passed and he must go…..ASAP!

Tony Sporano was equally deserving of the honor but someone had to win it and I’m happy that it was our coach Mike Smith!

With the disappointing playoff loss it is very easy to get down right now Falcons fans, but the future looks bright.

I love Coach Smith and the Falcons, but I don’t see how he won Coach of the Year over Sparano. What Smith did was incredible, but Sparano turned a 1-15 team into a division winner in his first year. Coach Smith turned a 4-12 team into a number 5 playoff seed.

By Darius Pratt

January 4, 2009 9:51 PM | Link to this

jds, way to be objective. You ought to be a Supreme Court Justice, or something. Maybe some kind of presidential adviser.

Are you keeping track of current events? Atlanta was the laughing stock of the NFL! Not Miami at 1-15. Atlanta gets a hip-hop gangster negger for their franchise QB, and he goes to PRISON. Not suspended by Goodell, not reprimanded by the team, HE GOES TO PRISON. He hangs dogs by the throat. He electrocutes them. Beautiful person. $130 million dollar Atlanta Falcon to boot.

Another tidbit you may have missed. Coach Petrino ran out of town when he found out what kind of animals he had to deal with in Atlanta. Ran away. Gone. Poof!

Miami had a crap season at 1-15, but no one thought they wouldn’t rebound. People love South Florida. The weather is nice. The Dolphins have won the superbowl twice. They had an undefeated season. Dan Marino. Bob Griese.

The Atlanta Falcons are on everyone else’s highlight reel. NFL laughingstock year in and year out. Nobody wants to play here, be here.

And now, after all that, in 2008-9, Coach Smith takes a basket case of a team 11-5, and to the playoffs.

Yes, he deserves Coach of the Year.

The Falcons fans have a great team to cheer for and hopefully we will have a fruitful off season that produces good draft picks….good FA signings. What a great turn around. We have an MVP candidate at the RB spot….the NFLOROY at the QB spot and the HCOY in Mike Smith. There are alot of bright things in the future for this club. eeeeeeeeeeasy there, Darius. You’re acting like I said Sparano was the runaway choice and that Smith was nothing more than a sack of crap. I think Smith deserved it…I just think Sparano deserved it a little more. In case you don’t recall, Miami was a laughing stock last year too. Someone, somewhere please get a note to the Falcons GM and see if we can swing a deal for Champ Bailey. That veteran presence in the secondary would help greatly, and I’m sure Champ - a good Georgia boy - is ready to get out of the mess in Denver and come home. I think we have enough “extras” (picks and players) to pry him away from the Broncos.

Smith deserved the coach of the year because he took a team that had a convicted felon on it (Vick) and inherited a team that had a coach (Petrino) bolt and quit on it because he knew he couldnt win without Vick. The Falcons last year were a team full of renegades: Algae Crumpler, D-Hall, Joe Horn, Mike Vick and many others. The team didnt care at all about the effort it was giving on the field. Arther Blank went out and got Mike Turner, Coach Smith and after drafting Matt Ryan in the draft, the Falcons were ready to be transformed into a playoff team. Here is what the Falcons passed up by not competing against the Cardinals in the playoffs. The Falcons passed up a superbowl championship because I thought they had the BEST overall talent in the league and I still feel that way. Oh well, such a heartbreaking loss because the FALCONS WERE TALENTED ENOUGH TO GO ALL THE WAY, but they didnt because they didnt believe that they could win any playoff games at all and felt they were lucky to be in the playoff tournament, which they were so the Falcons go home for the winter with nothing to show for their great 2008 season except pro bowl appearances by some of their players and awards by Mike Smith (coach of the year) and Matt Ryan (rookie of the year). Well, lets see what happens when Vick comes back next year when he sits on the bench behind Matt Ryan as the second string quarterback. Maybe the Falcons will then have enough talent to go all the way. Too bad.

FALCONS GM: DONT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY: I think the Falcons SHOULD go out right now and hire Mike Shannahan as their offensive coordinator. I dont care who currently has the job, Mike Shannahan has a hall of fame offensive mind and his insights as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator is exactly what is missing the Falcons to win the superbowl in upcoming year. I dont know if Shannahan would take such a demotion like that after being the head guy for so long, but once Shannahan gets hired by someone, that brilliant mind will be working for someone else. If King Arthur is reading my blog, please give it some thought. You have nothing to lose because your team is on the DOORSTEP OF GREATNESS and you need a brilliant mind like Shannahan to push you over the top.
