Playoffs start now for Falcons

Before we get started, we should pay a silent tribute to the great Slingin’ Sammy Baugh who passed away this week. If you’re a real fan of the game, you have to know your history. For you trivia buffs, Baugh, Y.A. Tittle, Otto Graham and former Falcons coach Norm Van Brocklin are in any discussion about the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

The NFL didn’t start with Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, James Harris and Roger Staubach you know.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame site is a good place to check out the game’s all-time greats.http://www.profootballhof.com/

Also, our good friend Frank Hughes of the Tacoma News Tribune sent a note to the NFL writers group to point out that the classy Mike Holmgren has asked the fans to stay after the game. He wants to talk a lap around the stadium to thank the fans in his final home. I covered Coach Holmgren for most of his tenure in Green Bay. He made football pertinent again in Green Bay and the Pacific Northwest with three Super Bowl trips and one victory. Super guy and he was always fair to the media. Paranoid at times, but fair.

Now on to your Birds!

The playoffs start in Minnesota for the Falcons. That’s how they are approaching it. Forget about all of the scenarios. They don’t matter unless they win in Minnesota on Sunday.

The second most remarkable thing about this season - can’t top the rookie quarterback’s play — is that rookie head coach Mike Smith and his staff have had the team ready to play in every game. They haven’t had one clunker of a game. There have been mistakes, like a couple of block punts, a bad half at Tampa Bay, or the late TD drive to Denver. But they haven’t just stunk up the field for an entire game. So you have to think they will be ready for the Vikings.

The offensive line is the key to game. Minnesota’s defense, even without defensive tackle Pat Williams, will be the best unit on the field. They’ll have three Pro Bowlers — Kevin Williams, Jared Allen and Antoine Winfield — and a potential Hall of Famer in safety Darren Sharper on the field. The Falcons must spring Michael Turner loose on some runs to burn the clock. Also scoring TOUCHDOWNS in the redzone will be key.

Remember with the major colleges getting ready for their Bowl games, we have Saturday NFL games this week!

Here’s your NFC rooting guide: Dallas plays Baltimore on Saturday and Tampa Bay faces San Diego at 1 p.m. Sunday. Falcon fans are rooting for the AFC teams, Baltimore and San Diego.

The Falcons will hit the field knowing the outcomes of those two key games. The Philadelphia at Washington game is at the same time 4:15 p.m., while Carolina plays the New York Giants in the Sunday night game. Washington and the Giants are the teams the Falcons fans are rooting for to win.

How do you see the Falcons game against Minnesota? How many sacks will John Abraham have? How are the Falcons going to stop running back Adrian Peterson? Will the Falcons be able to open up enough room for Michael “The Burner” Turner?

Should be a great weekend. We’ll have some playoff clarity soon.

(Let’s stick to football! Everybody has been doing great!!! Even you VS2! Keep it going.)

Can you remember looking forward to a Falcons’ game as much as this?

And a regular season game too

We have been spoiled this season. Some of those percieved to have greatness waiting at the beginning of the season have begun to falter.

Ask a Seahawks, Chargers, or Green Bay fan

We could not have even begun to dream that we might be where the Saints are right now at the beginning of the season -a .500 ball club.

And right now, we’re guaranteed winners

This snowball of a season has rolled down the hill, taking every punch anyone had to give..

And has just gotten bigger and tougher to stop as a result

No one expects anything from us..

They never have

We have the opportunity to lift Atlanta on our shoulders…

And make Dallas or Tampa Bay or Philly or maybe even Carolina wonder what happened

Forget the past, forget the future..

We have two games - years of frustration and dissapointment can be wiped away in just 10 little days

If you’re at the bar, at a buddy’s, at home, or if you’re lucky enough to be in Minnesota this weekend…

One Heartbeat

GO FALCONS!!!

All the Falcons need to do is focus on stopping Adrian Peterson. Keep nine in the box and force Tavaris Jackson to beat us with the pass. The cornerbacks will need to step up and get some interceptions in this game. Let Coy Wire start at line backer and move Boley to Keith Brooking position. Mistake free football is what we will need to win this one. If the Falcons win their last two games and Carolina looses their last two what wil the scenario be.

Have to agree with Mr. Ledbetter, the HOF is pretty cool. If you’re ever in the Cleveland, Ohio area - make the 35 minute drive south to Canton and check it out. Definately worth your time.

I’d like to think the Falcons need to FORCE SOME TURNOVERS. Tavaris has played well as of late - but he’s due for a stinker of a game.

Big Grady we need you this game. Keep pluggin those holes.

The Falcons are smart to start treating this part of the schedule like the playoffs, because for them it is sudden death elimination. As a fan, I cannot be disappointed about this season so matter what happens in the last two games.

Nobody is talking about it, but if Carolina loses their 2 games (at NY and at NO), Tampa Bay loses one game and ATL goes 2-0, ATL wins the Division. We have the tie breaker over Carolina. Is it likely? Nope, but it is possible It’s amazing that Carolina is playing for home field this Sunday, yet, they haven’t clinched a playoff spot yet. That’s how tight this race is.

Who among us thought we’d be talking playoffs???

I think the Birds get it done this weekend and give Minnesota fans yet another eason to hate our team.LOL Tavaris jackson had a good game last week with the 4 TDs but he only had 163 total yards. The threat is 28!! If we can contain him, they will be in for a LONG day!! Switching from Boley to Wire in run packages seems to be a good move….we’ll see how good it is against the number 1 back in the league. P.S. Gotta love that “one heartbeat” guy!!LOL Keep it coming!!!

Who the heck is James Harris. lol

I can’t bel;ieve that we are at this point. Check my preseason post and you will note I had the Falcons winning 8 games.

Thank You.

We have not had a total bad game this year and there is no reason to think one will come. So long as our DL can get pressure on the quarterback our secondary is okay. Did you notice how Abraham seemed fresh last week in the 4th quarter. It has to be due to this being taken out for plays during the game. He was a beast. Last week Brooking had his best game but you can see he’s near the end of his career. A good one too. We just don’t hear Jamaal Anderson’s name come up much. I’m 52 years old and I’ve got to tell you my favorite player is Matt Ryan. Unbelievable.

It seems to me that sometimes during the game Mularkey has a brain fart. Sometimes when you want to run the ball you spread them out and you have fewer tacklers to worry about. Our no huddle is comparable to the early 90’s Buffalo no huddle. Teams don’t have an answer for it. we should no huddle once every 5th possession.

Dang its good to be a Falcons fan.

All you can ask for is the right to control your own destiny. We have that now.

We actually don’t control our own destiny. We need help. Even if we go 2-0, We need one loss from the 4 games Tampa Bay and Dallas play. I think Philadelphia will beat Dallas.

I am pulling for Tampa Bay to make the playoffs with us. 3 teams from the South. We get no respect from the Yankee loving ESPN network.

Well I can tell you how much I am excited about this game. I moved to Wash DC recently and all they show is the Redskins, Philly and Baltimore. No Falcon love at all! SO I popped for NFL ticket and I will finally get to tune in the my beloved Falcons. My late Dad would be so happy. He took me to my first game in 1971 and I got John Zook’s autograph. Yea, the Falcons mean alot to me. I would have taken an organization that acted with class this year, but this is way over my wildest dreams.

SHOTYME is correct.

The Falcons should have 8 in the box, bring pressure blitz packages (this is the week!!), and EXPECT big games from Houston, Foxworth, and Coleman who should be effective playing bump and run with the Vikings receivers. Abraham will play as he has all year—like a BEAST (this week the Vikings will be witnesses). The coaching staff will have the team prepared. I expect the improvement in run defense to continue (great effort against Tampa) while also looking for the secondary to have a BIG game by way of interceptions and pass breakups. With the defense’s improvement against the run combined with staying alert to Minnesota’s screen game the defense will be effective. The offense will use play action effectively on Sunday. Minnesota is a one-dimensional team on offense. The Falcons will win—going away. GO FALCONS!!!

HEY STL FALCON

Excellent post. I have noticed you before and enjoy your posts. I am not that far from you in Kentucky. Will be watching on Sunday Ticket.

The game all comes down to linebacker play. Wire was great against the run last week and Brooking was better. Brooking has got to get off blocks in this game. He is getting some assists but very few solo tackles. He rarely gets there in time on his blitzes. He has GOT to pick it up. Also Boley has been a big dissapointment this year. When he is in I would like to see more out of him. Wish somebody on the coaching staff would light a fire under the Zombie Jamaal Anderson too.

Tarvaris Jackson has played fantastic after being benched for most of the season, Adrian Peterson is a beast, and the defense is tough!

December 19, 2008 9:38 AM | Link to this

Here’s my keys to the game, no striking revelation either btw:

1) Def line has to have its best game of the season if not, A Peterson will make it a lonnnng day for us.

2) O-line can not let Minn’s heraled d-line man-handle them. Pat Williams is out so that helps.

3) Jump on them early and take the crowd out of it for they WILL be amped up to the tenth power for this game.

4) Cornerbacks (especially you C Houston) have to step it up, Tavaris Jackson thinks he’s Peyton or something now.

If we can do these things and I know its asking a lot, we can get to the postseason. Nothing would be sweeter than to clinch a playoff game having watched the Cowgirls blow it. Well maybe watching the Carolina Panties blow it too.

SHOTYME wrote: ” Let Coy Wire start at line backer and move Boley to Keith Brooking position.” Having Coy Wire start instead of Boley certainly makes sense after they way Wire played last week. As for starting Boley instead of Brooking, that is ridiculous. Brooking has 86 tackles on the year (63 solo),wheresas Boley has 57 tackles (50 solo). Not to mention Boley’s dropped interception in the NO game that would have sealed a Falcon victory. So what are you making this suggestion based upon…..hmmmmm, I think I know.

To the Atlanta Media…Kevin and Pat Williams have been involved in two (2) of the recent scandals to rock the Vikings Boat - first the League suspensions for taking a product with a banned substance and second, the “Loveboat”, which set sail on October 6, 2005 - both Kevin and Pat were passengers on that boat where other Vikings were charged with indecent conduct. Atlanta please sink the Vikings boat.

Um, Rob? Slingin’ Sammy revolutionized the forward pass. Before him, the forward pass was considered a foolish gimmick, like the last-minute desperation lateral on the kickoff. Without Slingin’ Sammy, there would have been no receiver for Deion to step in front of, or pass for Deacon to rush. As a matter of fact, without Sammy, football probably would be as exciting to watch as a Harvard badminton game.

I very much agree that we have been in every game this season, one reason what it’s so frustrating that we lost some is that they were so winnable, we were close every time! I also agree with poster who says Mularkey seems to have at least one brain fart per game! But then I never like the playcallers for Atlanta, doesn’t matter who they are, I never agree with them!! Brooking has slowed, it’s true. But, he’s a leader & smart & he really stepped it up last game. The Boley thing is so strange, how can he have changed to much? He was just a beast last year! Wire seems to have that fire in his belly that we need. Jamal is going to have to be moved to another position this offseason, he’s just taking up space & not in a good way!! How can a guy that big play so soft?? Houston will improve & next time, he’ll hang onto that interception! I agree that keeping Abe fresh this year has been big, too bad that cost him a spot in the Pro Bowl, but we in ATL know he should have been voted in! Congrats to Roddy & Turner, who deserve to go. We have to be more solid this week & make less mistakes. That means no pics Ryan! I think he got spooked by his own mistakes last week but he is a very quick learner & he’ll move on. Let’s put him in better offensive situations to succeed! I know we need to keep trying the run but if we’re getting stuffed, mix it up! And stop throwing to back up tight ends, please!! We have awesome receivers, make use of them ALL! We need Chauncey & Babineaux to really step up & pressure Jackson this week, if we can somewhat contain A.P. then we will win. You can’t tell me Tavaris Jackson can beat us! I hear Jared Allen plays dirty so watch out for him, too! I love how our offensive line is a little nasty!! Go Birds, you can do it, lets make another memorable game like the awesome win in ‘98 in Minnesota!!!

I’m a Falcons fan stuck in the snowy city of Chicago. Fox gave me an early Christmas gift: Falcons Vikes game on TV Sunday afternoon.

I think it is critical that the Falcons get to Jackson. He’s still a young quarterback, and we need to shake his confidence with some big hits, and early sacks. I see Abraham having a monster game with a chip on his shoulder from the ProBowl fiasco. 3 more sacks and a couple hurry ups that force mistakes.

Falcons 24, Vikes 17.

Baltimore has a better shot a beating Dallas than San Diego does beating Tampa Bay. We will see #1 rushing D vs. the #1 rushing O. The Minnesota pass Defense is the 23rd ranked pass D in the league. Look for Ryan to have some success throwing Sunday. White may draw double teams so look for Jenkins, Douglas, and even Justtin Peele to step up big. Atl and Minn are very evenly matched. Atl defense must pressure T. Jackson to be successful.

Biggest game since 04 in Philly so far. If we win, next week’ll be the biggest. Then the week after if we win out cuz that’ll be a playoff game. Glad to see the consostent Falcon fans still posting positive vibes for us to enjoy. I posted alot in the preseason (formally known as Scotty, I decided to use my real name now for recognition purposes) and early in the season. I also predicted a winning season. I did predict to sweep the NFC dirty…didnt expect it to be so brutal. Being a big MV7 fan with dreams of him returning as a totally revamped Steve Youg like passer who’d give us 10 superbowl rings, I’ve gladly settled for the rookie in MR2. He threw a couple passes in the Saints game that were jaw dropping for a rookie. Last week was a struggle. He’ll shake the Tampa Bay jitters by next season. We are playing as a team for 15 weeks so far and I don’t expect for us to stop now. When the season started and the guy started with the ONE HEARTBEAT stuff, I thought it was pretty lame. But now, i can dig it. so props to all the fellow dirty bird fans and posters who back our team win or lose and to VS and VS2, all the smacktalk is coming to an end, my friends. I have confidence in the coaching staff and players to be more than up to the task of beating the Vikings AGAIN in a crutial must win for both teams. Crabapplejoe- I can definitely understand starting Boley at Brooking’s position. Brooking may have more tackles, but it doesn’t really help us much when it is 15 yds down the field. If you want to see why this is a good idea, go back and take a look at the last Carolina game where Brooking was juked out of his shoes by Jake Delhomme on his td run. I don’t think race has anything to do with it. Boley did drop the interception, but it was the inability to stop their running game that costs us that win. We are going to need the best performance of the year to stop that machine the Vikings have in the backfield, no matter who starts. I know it is so cliche, but this one is going to be won in the trenches…

Great blog, DOL—

My two cents on the game Sunday:

The good thing going into this game is the pressure is a bit off as even if TB and Dallas win their games, the Falcons won’t be eliminated…so we can sit back knowing there is still hope there (re: what the other two teams did).

I agree about the Falcons must win or all bets are off…I think this is a team—the Vikings—that if the Falcons show up and play their game…and if Ryan has no INTs…they’ll win.

Dallas: Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Baltimore is desperate to stay alive in the playoff chase…as is Philly. Heck, the Eagles, even if eliminated, would love to knock the Cowboys out of it.

I like our chances of the Cowboys losing one of these two games. If not, you have to give them credit…they will have earned their berth.

Tampa—San Diego and Oakland. It doesn’t seem likely they’ll lose to Oakland…but SD is desperate to make the playoffs, too, and will show up. Hopefully, LT will have a big game and run the Bucs off of the field.

Again, it all goes back to the Falcons beating Minnesota. Nothing else really matters unless they do. Good point about Mike Smith having the team ready to play each game. Let’s say the Falcons win and get back into a Wild Card slot this weekend. Coach Smith will definitely have them ready to go next weekend against the Rams, so I don’t think we have to worry about a let-down.

Getting ahead of myself for a minute…if the Falcons get in as a #6, they’ll have to play either Chicago/Minnesota or Arizona.

I like their chances…a lot.

I honestly have felt this whole season the only NFC team the Falcons wouldn’t have a good chance against is the Giants—and they look awfully weak and vunerable right now…so if the Falcons can just get into the playoffs…who knows? They could go far.

Finally, I can’t tell ya how nice it is to be excited about the football team again…especially with the Braves not playing well…and everything else. Here’s hoping come Sunday night the Falcons will have moved ahead of at least one of the two teams in front of them.

D Led, I like the Falcons chances though I think it will be a hard-fought battle. Looking ahead to the ‘09 draft, I think we need to improve the defense at DT, WLB, and SS. CRABAPPLEJOE, I know exactly wahat you are thinking, its about race. The simple fact that Boley is a much faster and his awarenwess is alot better than Brooking. Boley may not be having such a great year, but he is still alot better than keith brooking at this point in their career.Dont get me wrong Im a big brooking fan, have been for a long time. but its time for brooking to hag up his cleets. He’ll make a good linebacker coach.

Michael—

The sweetest thing about the NFC Championship 10 years ago was that we gained a measure of revenge against the state of minnesota for the 1991 World Series defeat…A defeat where a minnesota columnist said the best thing that ever happened to Atlanta was when Sherman burnt us down…he went on to say the worst thing that ever happened to us was that we re-built the city.

Then, seven years ago we find out the twins cheated by rigging the vents in the metrodome so yes…if we could win Sunday and knock the Vikes out of it again, I would enjoy that.

Win or lose, I have confidence that the Falcons will show up on Sunday, and fight hard for 60 minutes. I don’t see how anyone can doubt them at this point.

Heck, the Falcons were in the game with that same Vikings team last year until AP broke the long screen pass in the 4th quarter - and they were led by Petrino & Harrington for crying out loud! Shouldn’t you expect better results this year? I do.

Good job today. Let’s keep it going!

Dale Baker is ready to go. But I think you want Weiner on Jared Allen in this game. Weiner is playing great right now. Let the vet handle the playoff business and spot play Baker like they did last week.

Must admit, James Harris was a personal favorite. Could have thrown Jim Hart and Brian Sipe in there too!!! Also personal favorites.

My point was that the game didn’t start with modern era QBs and to give the old throwers some love. Baugh was the first.

I wasn’t comparing the group.

However, I dont like your odds of winning this game. All we have to do is match up Winfield on Roddy and we win. I like Turner just as much as the next guy, but you gotta be realistic… he stands no chance against the big purple D.

The Falcons have played well especially with the new QB. He will face a great D Sunday. It will come down to who wins the turnovers. Jackson looked pretty good last week but he scares me with his reads and not much playing time. My Vikes will have to play the best game of the year to beat the Falcons. You guys are as good as any team but you will have to come to our house and prove it this week.

We have a chance in this game because Tavaris Jackson is bad. His 17 passes against Arizona looked good, but note they only let him throw the ball 17 times. I think our D controls this game, but we need to get some turnovers!!

Our offense has to come to play, and we have to finish drives. GO BIRDS!!! Its 1998 all over again!!

Hey Vick supporter, you are funny, stupid but funny. Anybody who continues to hate the Falcons because Michael Vick is in jail should work in a comedy club. Get this through your head, Vick will never be back in Atlanta, and he will probably never play in the NFL again. It’s sad but frankly its the best thing that ever happened to the Falcons. Now we have a real NFL QB in Matt Ryan not a glorified running back who likes to smoke weed and kill dogs.

GO BIRDS! Take it to the Vikes.

Dawg4Life wrote: “I can definitely understand starting Boley at Brooking’s position. Brooking may have more tackles, but it doesn’t really help us much when it is 15 yds down the field.” ROTFLOL. I get so tired on this lame excuse whenever I quote Brooking’s far superior tackling statistics. In order to buy into your theory one of three things must be happening. Either the “slow” Brooking is missing the tackle at the line of scrimmage but somehow uses his inferior speed to run down the RB from behind, or 2) Brooking is the only one playing defense since the other ten “affletes” somehow missed the RB until Brooking catches him 15 yards downfield, or 3) The coaches are having Brooking play incredibly deep. The reality is that Brooking is having a much better year than Boley. The stats show it and the coaches know it. That’s why Coy Wire will replace Boley not Brooking this week.

I’m not a Falcons or a Vikings fan, so I’ll try to add a little objectivity here. The Vikings have won 4 straight and 6 of their last 7 games. The Vikings have only lost one home game this year to Indianapolis on field goal with 5 seconds to play. The Falcons are 3-4 on the road this year. The Falcons greatest strength is their running game. The Vikings have the #1 rush defense in the NFL. You figure it out.

Seems like the DirtyBirds are relevant again. Good play from a rookie quarterback, Michael Turner flourishing now that he’s out of the shadow of LaDanian Tomlinson and a decent defense. If the Dirty Birds keep it close, they can probably hold off the Vikings. Playoffs are a possibility!

By Quick

So far, Atlanta has beaten every team that it has faced from the NFC North. Minnesota can’t say that. Atlanta will score first and grind out the rest of the game. I feel someone new to step up for the Falcons this week. Peele, Snelling…you just never know with this year’s team.

By jericho

December 19, 2008 4:23 PM | Link to this

Hey Quick, of course not, nothing is ever guaranteed. You, of course, are quite correct, that is indeed why they play the game. That being said, I would find it extremely difficult to find an objective, rationale explanation for why the Falcons will win this game other than, as you say, “that’s why they play the game.”

STL Falcon, that was an eloquent start to this blog.

This is a general observation about the NFL, NOT specifically about ATL as I think they’ve done a better than average job. I think A LOT of NFL coaching staffs don’t have the person who stands above the fray and advises the HC about clock management in a quiet, penetrating voice. It’s hard when you’re focused on the most effective play or emotions get in there (roger, that, Antonio Bryant, back to your side of the field) so it would be a good thing to have Mathy Ice next to him or on the headset . Smitty or any other play-calling coach could/should disregard the input if he doesn’t find it valid, but …

Here’s a prototype. There’s a guy a who never played football past 9th grade who watches with us. I think I’m up on NFL rules, etc. but he can lay it out how many time outs, how much time each play will cost, how many possesions needed, exactly how much time/plays the defense needs to hold the ball, suggested in rapid fire, as early as the 5 minute mark. He ought to be a hired by an NFL team just show up on Sunday/by uplink and use his math brain, constantly updating strategy &procedural recommen-dations (even accept a delay of game penalty to safely drop back 5 yards before a FG as not to give time for a kickoff) as each play is run.

Let’s just call this my Christmas wish for my favorite team. Now, Beat MN into submission is my Holiday wish for me.

Good job VS2 on making your points without going to THERE!

We can have a hearty football conversation without the race references from Bulldawg.

VS2 is reformed. He’s not name calling anymore or using the R-word. like Ryno suggests.

You folks don’t have to agree with him. But we need different viewpoint. It’s called balance.

Brian VanGorder wanted to know if I was going to put this note in the paper. Here is a better place.

After Friday practices, Smitty calls folks out to do some skills test for a little wager. Today was my day. I had to throw a pass into a bucket at 10, 20 or 40 yards for charity, Toys for Tots.

Poor kids. I missed the 20-yard pass. It was a tight spiral, but sailed to the right of the container.

There you go VanGorder! I didn’t put in the paper, but it’s on the blog!

Tavaris Jackson and Adrian Peterson OR Matt Ryan and Michael Turner Which combo would you take if you were a GM?

I got to go with the Red and Black this week, even though I would take the Jackson/Peterson duo over Ryan/Turner if I was building a team. That’s not a shot at Ryan. I just think Jackson has a bit more upside, and Peterson is simply the most dominating RB to hit the NFL since OJ.

But this week’s game isn’t about just those four players. The Falcon have the more complete team right now. Dirty Birds win this game (or lose it) based on: (1)special teams play - Norwood back at top form on kickoffs, some HD magic on punt returns, continued good coverage, (2)field position - which plays off of the special teams and perhaps some opportunistic defense, and (3)time of possession - Peterson can’t run it from the sidelines, so do whatever it takes to keep him over there.
(3a)Some more creative and aggressive play calling on both sides of the ball would be very nice too.

I also hope the coaches have really hit them hard about sloppy play (on both sides of the ball at varying times) over the past three games. We won two of them, but it’s time to raise the level of play, not dumb it down to the opponents level. We are capable of blowing out the Vikings. The real Question is whether this team is ready to step up and start dominating.

I predict the Falcons go 2-0 against the Vikes this weekend. That’s right 2-0. One of course is guaranteed as tonight @ 9 on the NFL Network is the 98 Championship game against Minn. Will be fun to watch.

The key this weekend is getting to Tavares when he does throw. A 5 sack game should do it. And of course a plus 2 on turnovers would be great.

Ryan had a subpar game last week and won. He hasn’t had 2 in a row so look for him to have a pretty good day.

I think the Falcons have a decent chance to win because of the injuries to the Vikings players. Having Pat Williams out is a big blow for the Vikes, plus AD, Jared Allen and Brian Robison are both banged up.
Having said that, the Falcons are the clear underdogs. The people who know more than anybody about sports (Vegas odds makers) have the Falcons as 3.5 point underdogs. Both of these teams are built similarly, though the Vikings are better hands down on defense. Both of their rushing offenses are identical. However even without Pat Williams, the Vikings ability to stop Turner is FAR greater than Atlanta’s ability to stop Peterson/Taylor. Unless Atlanta can win the turnover battle by at +2, I don’t see them going into MN and winning. The Vikings are going to force the Falcons into being one dimensional on offense. It will fall on Ryan’s shoulders to avoid a very stout pass rush and and get the ball downfield to loosen up Minnesota’s very talented front seven. I’d say 27-17 Minneosta

In week # 13 of the National Football League, the Atlanta Falcons suffered four turnovers but managed to defeat the San Diego Chargers @ Qualcomm Stadium, 22-16… And in week # 15, the Falcons had four turnovers against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and prevailed in overtime @ the Georgia Dome, 13-10. Coach Mike Smith said the winning percentage of teams with identical turnovers in games over the last eight years in the National Football League is fifteen percent. Our football team has demonstrated an uncanny ability to win football games without firing on all cylinders. As the cheerleaders used to say when I was in high school living in the deep south, “we can’t lose with the “stuff” we use”.

We can’t say enough about the offensive line and Michael, the banger/burner Turner etc… The Falcons have high draft picks, white collar workers, on the left side, - Justin Blalock/Sam Baker/Todd Weiner/Wayne Gandy, and un-drafted free agents, blue collar workers, on the left side, Harvey Dahl/Tyson Clabo. This is an excellent mixture of talent and determination… Todd McClure at the center position is a combination of the two by default. Which side is preferable to the running backs? It appears that the long runs from the line of scrimmage originate from the right side. And the running backs seem to prefer the left side of the line for the tough yards…

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Falcons are rounding into championship form. And once again they have taken flight to the north, slightly North West over Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and to the H.H.H. Metrodome. At kickoff, look for the Atlanta Falcons to come out firing on all cylinders, offense, defense, and special teams. And that’s spells almost double trouble for the Vikings. My intuition tells me that the Falcons’ excellent game planning, execution, blocking, and tackling will propel them to an easy victory. We should win by twenty eight points! We can’t lose with the “stuff” we use. So drive home safely, Atlanta wins, 59-31.

Great name, Exodus Mentality. Now why don’t you get the F out, and move back to Africa. You and the Vick supporters can form a junta and take over the Bongo Congo. Just image, you can conspire with all your kinfolk, and put on the full-on hate against whitey.

Minnesota is one of the two teams that won on the road in NFC South stadiums (Denver is the other).

Minnesota beat the division leading Arizona Cardinals on the road, in Phoenix.

Minnesota beat the Carolina Panthers easily, and is 2-1 against the NFC South, two of only three losses NFC South teams have posted against NFC North teams (3-11 NFC-N record so far).

Minnesota beat the Detroit Lions 12-10 in the Metrodome, then 20-16 at Ford Field, coming from behind to win both games.

Minnesota has done something the Dallas Cowboys could not do, which is win with an old, over-the-hill quarterback AND a young inexperienced quarterback (a two-quarterback team).

Minnesota challenged the ruling on the field that half its defense was masking steroid use, got a reversal, and may not get charged with a “time out” until next year.

Can you not see a trend here? Minnesota is this year’s Cinderella team. The carriage and horses have still not turned back into a pumpkin and mice.

It seems that the falcons, the fans, and Brian Baldinger are the only people on the planet that think the dirty birds have ANY kind of chance to win this game. The vikes may slow the run game down, but Matt Ryan will play a beautiful game. I just think he has issues with the Bucs. Fortunately, we r probably done with those guys this season —-barring a postseason matchup.

The Birds win this one by a TD.

OK. We have the 2 leading rushing teams in the NFC facing-off, today. So, just what exactly could that mean?

Well, get ready for a wild passing shoot-out that goes right down to the wire.

I know that sounds crazy, but, I’m just saying.

After tomorrow’s game, it will be obvious to most that te Falcons are destined to be THE NEXT CLEVELAND BROWNS of the 2009 season. They will be a 10-6 team in 2008 that will barely miss the play-offs and then fall to 5-11 or worst the next season when they play a tougher schedule. Monty Kiffin did one thing in his last game coaching against the Falcons that teams should have done all year and that is he had his DB’s play press coverage against the weak armed QB and the weak armed QB could not make the throws, plain and simple, 2 easy ints. The Vikes will do the same thing and most teams the Falcons play from here on out will do it also. The party is over, wake up and smell the coffee, the dream is over back to life back to reality.

I will say this, if you put Ryan’s head on Vick’s shoulders, you might have the greatest QB ever. But put Vick’s head on Ryan’s shoulders and well, what day is garbage pick up again? I love the he!! out of Michael Vick, but d@mn if he ain’t the biggest idiot ever! White or Black, who gives a fk? Turned out to be the biggest waste of a 10 year contract EVER? If he comes back, fine, whatever. He will not be the starting QB. You just don’t find an athlete and put him at QB. He was the first QB to rush for over 1,000 yds, GREAT, but did you actually expect anything less? The man ran a freakin 4.2! Incredible athlete who has $hit for brains. Sad, sad story. And it continues………………………….

Mike Vick + John Rocker= 2 of ATL biggest idiots in recent memory! He!!, they deserve each other. I would love to hear that conversation.

You mean to tell me “SUPERMAN” could only muster together 2 winning seasons? The #1 overall pick? So let me get this straight, the Falcons trade up to get the 1st pick and use it on Vick. And 7 years later about to finish up the 8th, the Falcons have had only 2 winning seasons and now we don’t even get to watch all the highlight runs each week? Hell, now we even have a different QB. One who has led us to our first winning season since 2004. Oh no! Where o where will I be watching the playoffs this year? That is the 130 million dollar question?

What do Michael Vick and Ryan Leaf have in common? San Diego. Leaf burned San Diego worse than Vick burned that home wrecker some years ago with herpes. Leaf was so bad that they passed on Vick. Why? Was it because of talent? Couldn’t be, cuz Vick had talent. Maybe they knew something about him the Falcons didn’t. Wonder what it could have been? Leaf was so bad, but they had Vick at their fingertips and traded it away. Imagine where the Chargers would be today if only they had drafted Vick. The answer is the same place Leaf took them. The place where teams waste draft picks on QB’s and then one minute there here and the next they’re gone. Vick & Leaf = Best Friends Forever.

By Eric C., Mike Smith already know it, that is why last week they pounded Tampa with the run. I see some people keep writing about how smart Ryan is, well he is having a great season by any standards, it does not matter if he is a Rookie or not, many vets would love to have this type of season. But, it is impossible to compare Ryan to you know who because of the different coaching staffs. The falcons have one of the best staffs in football, that is why I believe Ryan is having such great success not to mention the very soft schedule. The NFC South have played a very soft schedule, The teams the NFC south have played and beaten have won roughly 40% of their games and that is counting the other NFC South teams that they have beaten. After tomorrows lost the DREAM SEASON will be over it will be back to waiting for the draft. After tomorrows game what will the the difference between the 1-14 Lions (The Lions will beat New Orleans) and the 9-6 Falcons, the Lions will have a better draft pick, they both will miss the play-offs. !0 wins or 1 win it does not make a difference unless you make it to the big stage. Joe Flacco is having a great season playing against much tougher competition. I said it in the preseason when the Falcons played against The Ravens and I will say it again, Joe Flacco was the best QB on the field that night.

FALCONS, THE NEXT CLEVELAND BROWNS OF 2009.

The Vikings do have the leagues best run DEF, but they’re ranked 20 against the pass. There’s a reason for that, and we have the WR’s and the QB to take advantage of it.

STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES, OR SAYS(VS 2). MVick did make the Probowl his “FIRST YR AS A STARTER”, not his first yr in the league. During MVick’s rookie yr, he couldn’t become the starting QB and received no alternate Probowl consideration or honors of any kind. Even completely biased Morons have to admit MRyan has accomplished more as a rookie QB than MVick?. Do any of you MRyan hating, MVick loving MORONS want to bet against him earning Probowl honors his 2nd yr, like MVick?

MVick was exciting, carried this team, and did some great things while he was here. But he will always be remembered and labeled for the stupid and illegal acts he committed, and rightfully so. Grow up and try to find more constructive ways of getting attention for yourselves. So far, you’re sounding rather stupid and childish.

This yrs team has already established a solid foundation. With another draft, and FA signing period to draw from, that foundation should be solidified even more. Add the fact both players and coaches will go into next season already knowing the OFF/DEF systems, terminology and each other. Our DEF will be further strengthened with the return of CB VHutchins, this yrs no. 2 FA signee, DT TLewis, last yrs starter, and projected rookie RB/KR TBrown from IR.

Next yr, the coaching staff will have a working knowledge of how well each player can perform within their system and under gm conditions. This yr, everything was based on film, which didn’t reflect how well they’d preform within Smith’s system, and training camp. And most importantly, next yr the players will enter training camp with a positive, winning attitude and complete confidence in their coaching staff, QB and their OFF/DEF systems. ATTITUDE, CONFIDENCE AND ORGANIZATION, NOT TALENT, ARE OFTEN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WINNING AND LOSING TEAMS.

GOOD LUCK TOMORROW AFTERNOON, YOU DIRTY BIRDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All our neighbors from Forsythe County would love to have a shorter drive, safer parking arrangements, and less guilt from telling pan handlers to go to he11. I think Blank finally gets it. It being losing money. That is what gets a Jew’s attention.

Blank inherited Vick. He tried to make the best of it. He dumped truckloads of cash on Mike, after buying into all the ESPN hype. All the press wanted a black QB star. Blank even wheeled Vick out on his wheelchair. I wouldn’t have been surprised to see him kiss Vick on the mouth. Blank invited him into his own home, and arranged elocution lessons for him. Blank lowered ticket prices so Blacklanta could fill up the JoDo. What effect did it have?

Ron Mexico thanked him by committing felonies. If the Feds hadn’t put him in prison, Ron would still be running around like a chicken with his head cut off. A 70 IQ moron running a professional football team. And Blank wouldn’t have done squat.

It’s a different team, different owner now. Blank is looking for friendlier confines. The cheap, black sth is a thing of the past. The Falcons are moving out of the ghetto, to whiter pastures. Retards like the Vick-lover clan will have to choke on it.

Boo Boo,

Consider this…if Washington beats Philadelphia tomorrow, then the Falcons could lose at MN and still have a good shot at reaching the playoffs. That is because Dallas (9-6) would have a tough game at Philadelphia (8-6-1) and the Falcons would have an easy game at home against the Rams!!

Eric C,

As long as the Falcons have a mathematical chance for winning the division (which comes with an automatic playoff position), and they will, since Carolina plays the Giants in expected cold and wind Sunday night, the Falcons have to see Minnesota as a must win situation. A 10-5 Falcon team can still win the division, if the Panthers finish the evening 11-4, by losing to the Giants. Beside that, playing a playoff team on the road (the Vikes are 9-5 and close to being a division champ) is good wildcard playoff practice, in case Carolina wins Sunday, winning the division.

The Falcons need to win against Minnesota simply to prove they are playoff material. I imagine the Eagles will take the same approach in Washington; and the Bucs against the Chargers.

Right now, no one is predicting the Falcons will do any better than one and done, if they make it as a wildcard team. They need (and this is that process thing of Mike Smith’s again) to go beyond beating the Bucs in overtime at home (process of proving they can beat a potential playoff team at home, in December), and go to the next step. The challenge is not to go 10-6, or to make it as a wildcard team because someone else beats another team. The challenge is to beat a potential playoff team on the road, during CRUNCH TIME. If they get to that step in the process, then they will know they deserve to be a playoff team (CONFIDENCE); and they will face the challenge of winning in the playoffs with some swagger.

REAIST-MVick didn’t become a starter until his 2nd yr in the league. MRyan started as a rookie, is a Rookie of the yr and MVP candidate, has earned alternate Probowl status, and is leading his team to the playoffs. MVick didn’t measure up to any of those accomplishments his rookie yr. Compared to MRyan’s accomplishments his rookie yr, MVick’s rookie yr isn’t worth mentioning.

In fact, MRyan just might accomplish as much, if not more, in his rookie yr as MVick accomplished his first 2 yrs.

FALCS ROLL-why would adolescent minded morons like VS 2, who repeat the same crap over and over, change anything they say, or stop posting, when they get exactly the responses they’re fishing for from idiots like you and JOEBRAVE? IF YOU DON’T ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE, IT WON’T BURN.

These instigators are only seeking a certain type of response which always comes from a certain type of individual. Anyone that offers an intelligent response and/or shows how stupid their comments and asertions are, gets ignored. THEY LOVE IT WHEN THEY CAN SAY SOMETHING THAT GETS A RISE OUT OF THE CLOWN ELEMENT OUT IN CYBERSPACE. THERE’S ONLY ONE THING THAT SEPARATES YOU CLOWNS. ONE IDIOT(S) RELISHES INITIATING THE STUPIDITY, WHILE THE OTHER IDIOT(S) ARE PROGRAMED TO RESPOND TO IT.

By Supes, Flacco has played against a tougher schedule against teams with better winning percentages and better defenses, when Matty Ice played against Tampa last week what’s up with his stats. You ATLiens swear that Ryan is a lock for Rookie of the year. What about Chris Johnson the RB for the 11-2 Titans and a PRO BOWLER his rookie year, or Forte the RB for the Bears that has a thousand yards . They are just as valuable to their team as Matty Ice. No way is this guy a lock for ROY. If not for the Pro Bowler Chris Johnson the Titans would not have their 11-2 record. Or even Ryan Claddy the O-lineman for the Broncos that have given up very few sakes and have done a great job protecting Cutler. There will be some very good rookies playing in the post season. Flacco, Johnson and Claddy while Matty Ice will be sitting at home because today the Falcons lose. One of those Rookies playing in the play-offs will get the exposure and win ROY. I say it will be Chris Johnson.

FALCONS, THE NEXT CLEVELAND BROWNS OF 2009.

I’m certainly not hoping for this scenario but…

If the Falcons lose to the Vikings and the Eagles beat the Redskins, will the Falcons be virtually eliminated from the playoffs?

The Eagles and Cowboys play next week and the winner would get the last spot, correct?

By BigEasy830

December 21, 2008 10:31 AM | Link to this

By Chad, you are correct as long as Tampa win their last two and Carolina wins one of two. Philly wins today, next week Phiily dallas game will be for that 6th seed if the Flacons lose today.

by been here since ‘67, you here a few of national media people and all of ATL media screaming for Ryan for ROY. But, after todays lost and with the other rookies I mentioned above making the Play-offs, you won’t hear much more about Matty Ice. Chris Johnson is the only Rookie skill position player to make the Pro-Bowl, I can’t see the media except ATLANTA’s biased media giving to the ROY to Matty Ice over Chris Johnson or Joe Flacco. If you have truly been here since ‘67 you know the Falcons history, they have never had back to back winning seasons and it will not start now, with the tough schedule in 09 they will be 5-11 at best and I don’t give a hoot about MV7, I believe it was just wrong to lock a man up for a 23 months for a misdemeanor charge and then trump up the felony RICO statue like he was Al Capone to appease PETA. Then the Owner of the franchise that he made Millions for throw him under the bus. That’s my beef, what’s yours.

Times Vick threw for more than 2 tds in a game = 3

IN ONLY FOUR YEARS

Times Vick accounted for more than 2 tds (including rushing) = 8

IN ONLY FOUR YEARS

I defended Vick more than anybody. I believe he could have been among the greatest QB’s to ever play, and I wish him no ill will if he returns to the NFL. But he threw it all away. Maybe if he’d spent the offseason to work with his teammates, to get a better grasp of the offense, etc, instead of dogfighting, his ridiculous potential could have been fulfilled. But again, he threw it all away.

MSV2, you’re right, he was the main reason the Falcons had all the sell-outs. But I’d rather have 60,000 people in the stadium to cheer the team than 72,000 like you only there to cheer for Mike Vick. I loved the Falcons before Vick, with Vick, and now after Vick. Win or lose.

The funny thing about the vick guys is they keep talking about no playoffs since 2004; those are all Vick years!

yeah he didn’t play in 2007 but that was his team; he chose dog fighting over TEAM which is his right;

* but when the vick guys talk about no playoffs since 2004 they’re really talking about how ineffective VICK was as a quarterback!*

Ken Strickland, some simple truths: Mike Mularkey implemented Boston College’s offense. You know…the college Ryan came from?? That Boston College? Do ya think that may have been why it was an easy call for him to be starting? Do you think the fact that Michael Turner has more carries than any other RB in the league might have something to do with Ryan’s success? Do ya think Steve Bartowski was lying when he said “we found out that Mike had nobody else”, in his OWN words when describing the team in 2007?? You think Warrick Dunn in his BEST year equates to Michael Turner? You think Roddy White is lying when he says he was partying and eating Micky D’s 3 times a day the first 2 years in the league before he got serious in 2007? You think it helps that John Abraham is playing a 16 game whole season instead of 3 or 4 games whole season? Now for all the years Vick was here, it was his fault no matter what…and considering that Bartowski himself said Vick WAS the whole team, I guess that bears fruit…but dont pretend like Matt Ryan is putting the Falcons on his back, because he’s not. Dont pretend like Vick had the same institutional support…he didn’t have nearly the luxuries that Ryan gets - FROM DAY ONE. Dont get revisionist history syndrome, which is so prevalent in these parts.

The Ravens defense is better than the Falcons ever will be, but they played a tougher schedule too. How many top ten defenses did the Falcons face this year?

You know where MVick is going next year or two or three, Detroit. There he can run around and make the highlight films, and get more people to show up. They don’t care about being good, just getting people excited about the big exciting running plays. What 48% completion, more running yards than passing, blaming the offensive line for not being able to block for an erratic excuse of a QB. They deserve him, yes they deserve him and all like him.

I’m a bit confused, earlier this week the deal was the Falcons had to win their last two and get help to make the playoffs. Now they can win just one since the Cowgirls and the Bucs lost today? Can someone please explain what the playoff situation will be like next week if the Falcons lose today? I know there is a 24-7 lead…but this is the Falcons we are talking about and no lead is insurmountable.

Shawn B…I think it has to do with victory strength because the prior tiebreaker scenario assumed TB would beat San Diego (would have been 6-9) and beating Oakland wouldn’t bolster their victory strength like a win over SD would. On the other hand…a win over MN by the Falcons boosts their strength of victory to above TB’s in that case.

I think that is right???

9 and a half minutes left in the game for VS2 and the Vikings to get some redemption.

Yes, Michael Turner has been great for this franchise. It’s nice to have a guy who likes to run the ball all the time BUT DOESN’T FUMBLE IT AWAY TWICE AS MUCH AS HE SCORES RUNNING. That’s the difference between a real running back, and a quarterback who likes to run.

By crabapplejoe

My gosh, we are giving No. 7 all day to throw the ball. Thank goodness he would rather run and can’t complete a pass.

By Navigator

December 21, 2008 6:45 PM | Link to this

I don’t care who the QB is, but if they’re mindset is to run before throw, they will not be champions in the NFL. Everyone throws out Steve Young, because he could run, but that man could and did pass with the best. QB’s have got to have the passing instinct before running, and that will never change.

By Najeh Davenpoop

December 21, 2008 6:49 PM | Link to this

The Falcons are keeping the Vikings in the game in the 4th quarter with the conservative play-calling. If you are gonna pass, do it on 2nd down when the defense doesn’t expect it, not on 3rd when the defense knows it’s coming. Otherwise, run on all three downs and burn as much clock as you can. I’ve been on the Mike Smith for Coach of the Year bandwagon all year, but here is one of the rare bad decisions by the Falcons’ coaching staff.

On another note, here’s Exhibit A why QB rating is a useless stat that doesn’t mean anything:

Tarvaris Jackson: 108.8 QB rating.

Matt Ryan: 88.0 QB rating.

I think it’s clear to everyone who’s watched this game that Jackson hasn’t played a better game than Ryan.

All I can say is, we are winning. The defense keeps holding, despite a fairly decent/solid game by both Jackson and Peterson. Likewise, Ryan and Turner are not doing badly either.

I like how VS2 and his alter ego is quick to talk about Turner bailing out Ryan when Vick was bailed out by Alge Crumpler more times than I could ever count. Hell, if it wasn’t for Crumpler, would Vick have passing yards? Ok, that was an exaggeration, but you get my point. This is what players like this are for: balance.

Mike Smith said he wanted to establish the run. Little did we know that Turner would balance the offense by establishing the pass very well for a rookie. Yet there it is. And no amount of hating, brooding, pi$$ing, and moaning will change that.

I’d love to support Vick and cheer for him, but I can’t seem to figure out which team he’s playing for. Oh yeahhhhh….he isn’t. Just drop it, will you? And quit hating on Ryan. He’s a good QB who will only get better. These are you Falcons, and they are better in a rebuilding year than they were for many of Vick’s years. Your claim to fame is one year of 11-5, and that wasn’t Vick’s rookie year.

It’s amazing how people are willing to say that Vick was done so wrong with bad players around him and bad coaching, and Ryan has such good surroundings….yet those same people ignore the fact that the GM, coaching staff, and many of the new players are all starting this together in the first year. That tells you that each contingent is just that special, that they could do this well in a totally new and different system, with new and different people.

By the way, Tavaris Jackson looks like a pretty good quarterback. He throws the ball well. He runs, and he wears #7. What more could you want? So why don’t you “Supporters” go on over and find yourselves a Vikings blog…and leave us Falcon fans alone? Besides, Vick isn’t going to play for us ever again. Why are you still here? Denial is ugly…

Why the hell did they run Ryan out on a bootleg? This is what they used to do with Vick — make him move out of the pocket, see pressure too early, and take away his ability to throw. Same thing happened to Ryan on 2nd down. Not a good play call, and then they set themselves up with a 3rd and long — predictable passing situation, and Ryan gets pressure in his face, throws off his back foot incomplete. I’m not a fan of the coaching decisions in the 4th quarter by Mularkey.

How many possessions do we need to start with the 1 yard run from Turner before we decide to mix it up a bit?

This 4th quarter has been excrutiating. We have been trying to run the clock out the whole quarter and now Minnesota is right back in this game. What is with all the conservative play-calling. Let’s score some G-D-MN points and get in the playoffs. I am starting to get really annoyed with this pathetic play-calling. This is a game we should be dominating, but because we are so conservative on offense and because we have done nothing this whole 4th quarter Minesota is poised to win this game. Act like you care Falcons!!!!

Pretty blatant pass interference that wasn’t called there, as Foxworth was grabbing Sidney Rice’s right arm. Vikings fans can’t complain though — if you turn the ball over 5 times, you shouldn’t expect to win the game.

Congratulations to the Falcons on making the playoffs.

Billick was right: refs shouldn’t decide the game. Rice had the inside position for the catch, if it was ridiculously obvious, it would have been called.

Considering that Minnesota didn’t even have to go all the way to the end zone for their first touchdown (ball should have been down on the 1), they can’t complain too much.

At least we won - despite some ridiculous play-calling in the 4th quarter. We better not be trying to pull this crap in the playoff’s. It’s a good feeling though isn’t Falcons fans - we’re actually in the playoff’s. I just want to know how many people here actually think we had a chance to make the playoff’s this year? I know I didn’t - I was hoping for a 6 win season with potential for 2010. We have as good a shot at making it to the Superbowl as anyone.

Virtual Fans,

Aren’t you being just a little hypocritical? I mean, are you at the game right now with you laptop? Heh….Can’t help the virtual part right now. I’ve been to some of the games, but I can’t go to all of them. Work and all that. But uh…I’m happy with this virtual victory right about now. Are you? Virtually speaking of course….

Shawn,

I’ll agree that Jackson is a better overall quarterback than Vick at his age/experience bracket. He has better pocket presence and accuracy capability than Vick. But twice the QB? First he has to be afforded all the opportunities that Vick has been afforded. But I think he’ll produce better if all else is equal. However, no one had Vick’s escapability. That, and Jackson had 2 fumbles of his own. To be fair, so did Peterson, the NFL’s top rushing back.

Vick Supporter 2,

Will we need to put you on suicide watch, buddy? I mean, having beaten the Vikings and all has got to be rough on you and your rotund opera singer. I’m afraid she won’t get to perform today, friend. No, Ryan didn’t win the game, but the Falcons sure did. I’m so sorry you were wrong again. Sorry your new favorite #7 let you down. Sorry we managed to contain the NFL’s top rushing quarterback, and outmaneuvered the #4 defense when it counted. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Not! I’m loving it….want a little salt to rub in that, so you don’t get infection?

Yessssss! Falcons win. Vikings committed one turnover after another against us. Our defense was pretty damn good. Hell, we looked like the #4 defense, not them. I’ll take that win, thankyou very much.

“I’ll agree that Jackson is a better overall quarterback than Vick at his age/experience bracket. He has better pocket presence and accuracy capability than Vick.”

Completely disagree. Jackson’s coach, as flawed as he is, is smart enough to realize that no matter how much a QB is used to running in college, in the pros you call plays that call for them to stand in the pocket and throw. Vick never had this luxury. When Vick got to stand in the pocket and throw he was more accurate — on tougher throws — than Jackson was in today’s game. I wouldn’t get too carried away with judging Jackson based on this week and last week. He’s got a long way to go to become a dependable NFL QB.

Eric C,

Tampa lost to a common opponent and (if they beat the Raiders next week) could finish no better than 9-5, while Atlanta finished 10-4 by beating the Vikings.

Tiebreaker in division:

Head to Head: Even 1 - 1

Division Record: Even 3 - 3

Common Opponent Record: Atlanta 10 - 4 beats Tampa’s 9 - 5.

The common opponents were the NFC South, the NFC North, and the AFC West. Atlanta went 3 - 1 against the AFC West, while Tampa went (if they beat the Raiders) 2 - 2. They blinked first.

We in de playoffs, and we did it legit.

VS2 you said that the Falcons would lose to TB and MN.

Matt has won more games than Vick in his first year as a starter.

Vick 9-6-1 Matt 10-5 (with one to go)

Now we need to get that bye week because Carolina is DEFINITELY losing tonight and remember that they have to go to New Orleans next week. Remember that crazy stat that against divisional opponents NFC SOUTH HOME TEAMS are 11-0

Team has found Matt. Rayan out. Put pressure on him and he is a punk! The NFL let this guy look good all year long by not putting pressure on him. His arm is weak in the fouth quater. But hope is alive. watch how the defensive dail the pressure up on the hope. Vick I know you are not comming back to neckville you are the better QB when you had no help matt has a way better team around him . Now to matt. you will become a good QB If you can keep a line and not waste away in the second half of the game as you have done the last 4 games . Najeh,

I get your point. I’m not comparing Vick to Jackson in a vaccum. I believe Jackson has better pocket presence at this stage in his career (vs Vick at the same stage) for exactly the same reasons you stated: he’s got better protection and better coaching. No two ways about it. But because of those influences, he is a better overall QB at this stage than Vick was at the same stage. That’s what I’m saying. In the end, because of the better coaching and better offensive line play, Jackson will probably end up being a better quarterback overall if he stays healthy and continues to have good players surround him.

A few things about Vick though, if I can say them without pi$$ing you off: I never was sold on Vick in the pocket. Seems like he just had so much trouble seeing down the field. When he stayed in the pocket, a lot of his passes got batted down. Used to see that a lot. And often-times, despite the protection, I’d see him run off-guard or off-tackle, like he couldn’t see over or past those guys. Then he’d try to make his throw. And often times, he would end up in trouble because his offensive linemen (seeing as how they are faced away from him) did not know where he was, and couldn’t block accordingly. The defense could see him just fine, so it was a crapshoot as to whether or not he would be able to run away from trouble, or get nailed. It also led to a ton of fumbles, as he never knew how to cover that ball up properly. Was he the victim of bad coaching and a mix-match of personnel? Absolutely. But all those fumbles? Can’t blame all that on everybody else.

And quite a few of those tough throws ended up being tough catches by Alge Crumpler. The dude was in a bad situation, no doubt.

By D-Bo

December 21, 2008 8:07 PM | Link to this

Yeah you right, Tavaris Jackson did look like Mike Vick today. He fumbled twice and lost the game. What a stupid comment that was. But he is better than Vick, at least the guy passes and doesnt give you double digits in interceptions or fumbles every year. That alone is worth something.

Dear AJC,

I like to blog now and again - especially the Braves Blog - but this Falcons blog is ridiculous. A couple years ago when Vick was going through his early struggles the race baiting on the AJC.com Falcons blog started and every time someone said something about Vick a racial blog battle would happen. It then got worse when Vick was going through his legal troubles and you would think 1 1/2 years after Vick was convicted that this blog wouldn’t be all about racial hatred. Yet it still is - I’m sorry - I’m a Falcons fan, but I HATE this blog.

Why isn’t there any censorship? Why can’t the racists idiots be removed and banned? Until it happens I am done with this blog.

“In the end, because of the better coaching and better offensive line play, Jackson will probably end up being a better quarterback overall if he stays healthy and continues to have good players surround him.”

That is possible. I still don’t see Jackson as having the kind of big play ability, either throwing or running, to where he could have the impact Vick had. Today’s game is exactly the kind of game that Vick would have taken over in the 4th quarter in 2002, but Jackson simply doesn’t have that kind of talent. But yeah, superior coaching and superior talent around him could end up making him a more consistent player down the road. But if I had to win a game right now, I would rather have the 2004 Vick than the 2008 Jackson, no doubt about it.

“When he stayed in the pocket, a lot of his passes got batted down. Used to see that a lot. And often-times, despite the protection, I’d see him run off-guard or off-tackle, like he couldn’t see over or past those guys. Then he’d try to make his throw.”

True, he did get batted down more than average, probably because he was short.

“And often times, he would end up in trouble because his offensive linemen (seeing as how they are faced away from him) did not know where he was, and couldn’t block accordingly. The defense could see him just fine, so it was a crapshoot as to whether or not he would be able to run away from trouble, or get nailed.”

I completely agree with this, but I blame the majority of that on coaching too… when Vick broke containment on his own it was usually because his instincts told him he could make a play with his feet, and more often than not those plays ended with positive yardage. The real problem arose when the coaches scripted QB movement, which almost always ended up in incompletions, inaccurate passes resulting from not being able to step into his throw, or turnovers. And there was way too much scripted QB movement in the offense under Greg Knapp. I can’t emphasize that distinction enough. The scripted QB movement is what absolutely killed Vick’s development as a passer, more than anything he or his teammates did. You simply cannot be a consistent passer when you are constantly being told to roll out, play fake, or sprint sideways on every pass attempt.

“But all those fumbles? Can’t blame all that on everybody else. “

True, and I don’t blame anyone but Vick for the way he carried the ball, but at the same time, I think being in a conventional offense would have resulted in more pass attempts, less rush attempts, and as a result fewer fumbles.

I am a man of my word, so I am not about to jump on the bandwagon just because the Falcons are winning. I am surprised and impressed with the Falcons though, and like I’ve said many times already Mike Smith deserves the Coach of the Year this year.
