Time for Falcons to call for “REDOUT”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What have the Falcons been waiting for?
University of Georgia did the blackout thing.
Georgia Tech is going for the whiteout tonight.
Why haven’t the Falcons called for a “REDOUT” for Sunday’s big NFC South matchup with the Carolina Panthers? (They could go blackout and wear the all black uniforms, but I agree with the Alabama people. who pointed out that you normally only wear black to a funeral.)
It’s no secret that the Dome hasn’t been rocking, despite the 4-1 home record. Folks get inside the Dome after to kickoff and seem to spend first quarter finding their seats or sitting on their hands.
It will be interesting to see if the crowd can make it inside time for Sunday’s big game since kickoff has been pushed back to 4:15 p.m.
How can the fan gets more lively? Why is the crowd so late to the games? Ready for the Redout? Blackout? Whiteout? No out at all?

Contact Coach Smith and let’s see if we can get a “BROOKING-OUT”. I know for sure that benching him will help the defense. When are you going to talk with the coaching staff to see why Nicholas is not getting more playing time at WLB? In case you haven’t noticed, we are entering crunchtime. It’s time to put our best available players on the field at every position. If you say Brooking is the best we have at WLB, Lord help us.

Brooking has 52 tackles so far this year, which is 4th best on the team. He has 10 more than Michael Boley. Thank goodness the coaches know more about players than you guys do. Let them decide who plays.

I remember in 1965 I got one of those vibrator football boards, where all the “players” moved in circles. The fake “crowd stands” that went on one side of the board had all the names of the NFL teams listed on pennants. In order to meet production schdules by Christmas that year, and knowing a franchise had been awarded to Georgia (USA), they wanted to accurately show all the NFL teams. However, since the franchise had yet to be officially named, that vibrator board stands scene had a red flag that simply read, “Georgia.”
Only years later did I realize that the Falcons should have been named the Georgia Falcons, because Rankin Smith was such a Bulldog fan he wanted to own them. The next best thing was a mini-me NFL Football team, whose team colors were red and black.
Of course, in the programs they sold at the stadium, they pointed out that some form of Old Gold, or chickensh*t yellow was also part of the official Falcon colors, which could be found either on the player’s jockstrap or a very thin line on the sock striping. That was for good ole Georgia Tech, because the Falcon’s were not the University of Georgia’s team, they were Atlanta’s team too. Besides, Smith could not place the team in Athens.
The reason the Falcons have been so bad throughout the years is because God only allows one team per state to have the same colors and win. All others with the same colors lose. Simply because all the prayers go out on Saturday morning, for the red and black of Georgia, there is nothing left over for Sunday morning, and the red and black Falcons. Thus they lose, even though they have cried out, “Make them see red!”, and sang loudly, “Back in Black!” Those things don’t work because the Georgia Bulldogs are the professional team of Georgia.
Maybe its time for the yellow to stand up and be counted as part of the Falcons legacy? How about everyone wear yellow to the Falcon game Sunday? Let’s start calling the Georgia Dome the Chicken Coop and have a yellow out!

No Freshmaker I’m sure gdg73 watches all the coaches tape and know all the plays that were called on defense and who had what responsibility. Is Keith the player he once was? No. But after you saw this coach and this GM purge just about every name player we had do you honestly think that they would leave Brooking in if Nicholas was better? I don’t think so

My main man Orlando…
NO GIMMICK, NO MAGIC…NO JOKE!! This is not the run and shoot, the gritz blitz, or some flickted version of the west coast offense with weirded out dangerous zone cut blocking. This is power, smash mouth, slap yo godmamma football. I honestly believe that they could care less about the 12th man. If they had us, Smith would put us up against a player and tell us to move him out. Forget it.
I was wrong. I thought that we would take 3 at home. Shanahan exposed us on defense, and I’m starting to think that we may have a hard time stopping Carolina’s run game. However, as you so eloquently stated earlier this week, the Falcons MAY be considering adding #54 to the lineup in place of #56…this could drastically improve their chances of stopping the run. Also…they need to play #98 on 2nd and long ONLY. Trust me.
My heart says Falcons win at home, with a good effort from Burner and Ice. Smith needs to let Ice throw more when teams are bent on stopping Burner. 25 rushes for 81 yards may indicate an over reliance on the run. We need to be very good at play action to win on Sunday. I think we come out throwing…move to the run…then end the game with play-action. Either way it will be fun to watch!

And maybe we could have my boy Vick just wear the “red-out” cause he’s really the whole team, if you ask me. —Im tired bout hearin bout this Ryan kid! I mean, c’mon! We all know that Justin Peele is making him look so much better than he really is!! He’s a bust! He’s only rated 13th in passer rating in the entire NFL as a rookie! PLEASE!! If Vick had J.Peele, can you even imagine how good he’d be?! scary, isnt it. All Vick had was some guy named Alge, who’s not even on the team anymore!!

Ditto SC,
This coach and GM wouldn’t be playing him if there were better players to be put on the field. He isn’t what he was and he isn’t worth the money he’s being paid, but he is still a very servicable LB, and I imagin with his contract, he’ll be here for a few more years, no one is gonna trade us for him, and the Falcons will not release him since he still contributes (52 tackles this yr)

This is playoff Sunday for the Falcons! Fans can wear red or attend nude. Will not mean a damn thing one way or the other in the overall scheme of things! A loss knocks playoff aspirations straight to Hell. Maybe not math-wise but certainly reality-wise! The drop by Roddy “Butterfingers” White last week elevated this to a must-win showdown. See loser has been complaining of phantom aches and pains. Any excuse is better than none! Right quitter? Keith “No Tackle” Brooking only a tiny shadow of his fotmer self. Love the way he pads his inidividual stats with assist touches after plays are long over. What a hero! Falcons slightly better than gutless Thrashers but way outdistance ball-less Hawks. Pale beside Jackets and Dawgs. GO FALCONS!

If memory serves me correctly (and if it doesn’t, I’m sure someone will correct me), I don’t think that we ever lost to the Panthers with the old helmets. The Falcons are wearing the all black this week. Just a thought on the REDOUT.
Where is the Brooking bashing coming from? He’s got 78 tackles (coaches stats) and is second on the team behind Erik Coleman’s 79. Milloy also has 78 tackles. Curtis Lofton has 70. Michael Boley has 57.
In solo tackles, Coleman and Milloy both have 51. Brooking has 46, Lofton 45 and Boley 41. A lot of plays are reaching the safeties. They can’t all be plays that Brooking is supposed to stop.
By **Frederick (Bailey) Douglass**
November 21, 2008 11:15 AM | Link to this
Its the obvious tackles that he misses…or the fact that he NEVER makes tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He catches running backs instead of hunting them down.
He NEVER makes plays out in space.
Boley does, Lofton does, Milloy certainly does. I think we should give #54 a shot to see what he can do. I know what #56 brings…sound, but not spectacular. When you have an undersized D-Line, you need spectacular LBs. Boley is, Lofton will be, #56 has never been.

I completely agree with Mr Douglass. I do not dislike Brooking as a man. Appreciate what he has meant to team. However, he is well past his prime. Young defense requires impact players. Guys who can swing momentum with a bone-jarring tackle, score-saving goal line stop, fumble recovery, quarterback sack or interception. That is how leaders lead! When was the last time Brooking did any of these? Touch down taps to gain assists are hardly worthy of a former Pro Bowl participant! Nice on stat sheet but not in reality. Oh well. Sacred cows are apparently beyond criticism. Even when warranted. GO FALCONS!

I am sick and tired of you and others regurgitating tackle stats. This guy was supposed to be the second coming at WLB (his natural position) and has not made one game-changing play this year. Yet and still he is getting paid like a game-changer. I watched Tampa play Sunday and looked at how Derick Brooks was playing. Brooks is 35 years old and was playing like a monster and still providing veteran leadership (similar to Milloy). I saw him covering Adrian Peterson out of the backfield and breaking up passes on fourth down to end drives. Yet, here in Atlanta, you bring up tackle stats as proof of his impact on the game. I agree thatBoley is not playing up to previous year standards, but I do remember Boley making an interception to secure a victory in G.B. Also I have seen enough of Lofton to see that he is our future at MLB. What has Highway 56 shown this year? How many ints.? Forced fumbles? fumble recoveries? sacks? Stop regurgitating tackle stats and watch the actual game and see what type of impact he is making. Stop excusing his lackluster play.

I really hope Brooking doesn’t read this blog. He’s the only remaining member of the superbowl team and has represented this organization with class and dignity his entire career, which has included some pretty crappy teams. Cut the guy some slack; he deserves better.

Boy can this throwing-aroung-the-stats thing be misleading. Hey Freshmaker, in your stat slinging, you left out the one that shows Brooking as virtually non-existent when it comes to pass defense. Boley has 7 PD’s & an INT to Brooking’s zeros in both categories. See? Stats can be used to support ANY argument.

BROOKING NEEDS TO GO At least I can give Bobby Petrino some form of credit for realizing that when he drafter Stephen Nicholas in the second round two years ago when he saw him on film at South Florida.
Nicholas is a monster folks. As soon as we get Brooking out of the lineup, the quicker we can have one of the best linebacker tandems in the league. I’m sure the Falcon’s managers want Brooking to get “BS” stats. So that way on paper it can look like a good year, then trade him to another team. Maybe get a second or third round-pick for him. But he better not be back in a Falcons jersey next year!!

There is breaking news from the headquarters of Charles, The Original. Stand by Atlanta Falcons fans. 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, l, you’re live! Good Evening Falcons fans and fans of the National Football League, NFL. Last Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons suffered their first legitimate defeat of the year. The Denver Broncos avoided being corralled in the back of the end zone with 1:11 remaining on the clock. As a result, the herd of wild horses legitimately defeated the Falcons, 24-20.
In the second game of the year, our young orthodox physical football team went on the road to Raymond James Stadium. The consensus was that the Falcons’ brain trust had only the shell of players needed to be competitive; and a rookie quarterback was debuted… Several drafts, free agencies, and chemistry were needed before moving in the right direction. And as expected, the Falcons didn’t have a legitimate chance of winning @ Tampa Bay. The Falcons lost, 24-9.
Ditto…. The same scenario existed in the fourth game of the season; a rookie quarterback etc… The consensus was that the Falcons didn’t have the personnel, experience, or chemistry to compete with talented NFL teams. And they didn’t have a legitimate shot @ Carolina. After the game, the scoreboard reflected that skepticism. It was identical to the second game. The Falcons lost, 24-9.
By game six, the Falcons had the same personnel but had experienced a new birth. A new team debuted in the NFL after the Falcons exorcised the ghost at Lambeau Field… They defeated the Green Bay Packers 27-24. Legitimate expectations were instantly bestowed upon our team. Most fair minded football fans thought the Falcons had a legitimate chance of winning @ Philadelphia in game seven. And with 2:22 remaining on the game clock, Philadelphia was leading 20-14. The Falcons had the ball on the forty yard line. They had the Eagles down for the kill. But officials of the Audubon society, charged with the preservation of the bald eagle, chased the Falcons away. And the Eagles escaped an almost certain demise, 21-20. The Falcons lost, 27-14.
In last week’s game, the Denver Broncos were atop of their division. And you know what? Not only were the Falcons expectations high, even prognosticators from across the country picked the Falcons to win by six. But it wasn’t to be. It took the Falcons almost the duration of four quarters to finally corral the herd of wild horses in the back of the end zone. Quarterback Matt Ryan stepped up in the pocket with 1:11 remaining on the clock and signaled for the team to lock the gate after the Broncos had been chased to the back of the end zone. The team closed the gate of the holding pen but didn’t lock it. And almost instantly, the herd of wild horses bolted from the pen in a cloud of dust. They treaded every narrow, back, and country road with lightning speed as if they should’ve been in Denver yesterday. Consequently, the Falcons suffered their first legitimate defeat of the year. The Falcons lost, 24-20.
Thank God our orthodox team has a track record of responding well after illegitimate defeats. After being defeated by Tampa Bay, they beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 38-14. After the loss to the Carolina Panthers, they defeated the Green Bay Packers, 27-24. And after the controversy with the Audubon society in Philadelphia, the Falcons rebounded by dominating the Oakland Raiders, 24-0. But last Sunday, our southern hospitality allowed Denver to redirect the foretelling of the game which contributed to the legitimate defeat. Nevertheless, look for the Falcons to dominate the Carolina Panthers and continue their flight toward Raymond James Stadium, February 1, 2009.
You know the drill. Falcons win, 31-21.

D.Orlando Ledbetter wrote: “Where is the Brooking bashing coming from? He’s got 78 tackles (coaches stats) and is second on the team”….Its real easy to understand why Stendec, Jockstrap 2 and the others hate on Brooking…he’s the only white guy on defense. They want a coal black defense and Mickey “dog killer” Vick back at QB. They can’t stand Brooking and the “Choir Boy” or “Golden One” because of their race…stats be damned.

The Falcons will NEVER amount to anything without a GREAT MAN and HONORABLE, BRAVE LEADER like they had in MIKE VICK.

I wish Mike Vick was dead. He really does not deserve to be breathing anymore. We can only hope that it will be long and painful and he will suffer greatly, but I fear that his death will be quick and rather painless at the hand of some heroic American.
Please somebody do the right thing and KILL MIKE VICK like he killed defenseless animals.

Is this the type of “leader” you believe in?
“The dogs were killed by shooting, hanging, electrocution and drowning, and in at least one instance, according to one of the witnesses, when Vick and Phillips killed a red pit bull by “slamming it to the ground several times before it died, breaking the dog’s back or neck.”
Matt Ryan will be our QB for the next 15 years and then retire to the Hall of Fame. You can catch your “leader” playing in the Arena League or CFL. He will never, ever wear a Falcons uniform again. ROTFLOL

Never have understand all the Brooking bashing year after year. It’s true he’s not quite as good as he once was, but all the guy ever did was lead the team in tackles year after year, make a few pro-bowls, and suit up every game year after year. Most fans don’t have a clue what it takes to to be a starter in the NFL. Head Coach after Head Coach keeps starting him. By the way, I don’t hear Boley’s name very often.

How about one of those … you know … in golf, when a guy doesn’t hit his tee shot past the ladies’ tees? For every minute the Falcons don’t have the lead in the game (time outs excluded), all the guys … you know … show ‘em red (as in faced - embarassed). Ladies, you are excused.
If a team is “rated” 8 wins and two losses, it is illogical to say that is overrated. It is what it is. If that team beat another team already, and has a virtual three game lead on that other team in record (counting tie breakers), then it has to be “rated” better. But, ratings are for high school and college.

Crunch time - when games really matter - that is where the heroes show their stuff. Crunch time players come on in November, escalate their play into December, and breaks nuts the last three games of the year, sealing a playoff birth for the team.
Matt Ryan is now 1-1 in Crunch Time. Now is when we see what he is really made of.
Oh, by the way, some Crunch Time numbers on Mike Vick (regular season only) -
Overall Nov.-on ….. 20 - 20 - 1
Nov.-on (‘05 - ‘06) ….. 5 - 13
Overall Dec.-on ….. 9 - 15
Dec.-on (‘04 - ‘06) ….. 5 - 10
Mike Vick’s playoff record is 2 - 2.
We’ll have to wait a few years to see if Matt Ryan can match this “greatness”.

Hey VS2, I’ll tell you what. Come over to my house after the game Sunday and we’ll continue our franchise in Madden ‘07. It should help you get over the possibility that Vick killed your family dog. FREE MIKE VICK!!! Anyways, I have a suggestion. I know we’re undefeated at the halfway point in our season and your doing a fantastic job playing as Vick,(You’re on pace to rush for more than 3,000 yards) but could I play with someone other than Brian Finneran? Why does White, Jenkins, Crumpler, and Dunn all have catches but I don’t? I appreciate you telling me I’m the best run blocking wide reciever in the world, but a few of your laser guided rockets my way from time to time would be even more appreciated. Don’t get me wrong, I take pride in my blocking! I just feel like I’m getting hated on in some way.

List of NFL records and milestones In 2006, Vick became the only quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards during the regular season. In 2006, Vick set the NFL record for most yards per carry in a season, at 8.4. When Vick and RB Jerious Norwood both ran for over 100 yards in Week 4 of the 2006 season, the Falcons became the only NFL team to ever record two games in a franchise’s history where both the quarterback and a running back on the same team surpassed the 100-yard mark in the same game. (Vick and Warrick Dunn both eclipsed 100 yards in Week 2 of the same season.) Vick (1,039 yards) and Dunn (1,140) became the first QB/RB tandem in NFL history to each go over the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the same season. They also became the fourth set of teammates in league history to each have 1,000 or more yards. The last set of teammates to accomplish the feat were Cleveland RBs Kevin Mack (1,104 yards) and Earnest Byner (1,002) in 1985. Earned his second consecutive and third overall Pro Bowl nod in 2005 as he passed for 2,412 yards and 16 touchdowns in addition to leading all NFL quarterbacks with 597 rushing yards and six scores. Named to the second Pro Bowl of his career after leading the Falcons to their third division title in team history and breaking numerous NFL and team records in 2004. Set an NFL postseason record for a quarterback with 119 rushing yards in the 2004 NFC Divisional Playoff win against the Rams. Became the first quarterback to ever throw for more than 250 yards and rush for over 100 yards in the same game at the Broncos (October 31, 2004). Named to the 2002 Pro Bowl, becoming the seventh quarterback to be voted to the NFL All-Star game in his first year as a starter since 1970, joining Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins (1983), Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers (1992), Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams (1999), Daunte Culpepper of the Minnesota Vikings (2000), Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles (2000), and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots (2001). This group would later include Marc Bulger of the St. Louis Rams (2003), Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (2006), and Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys (2006). Top overall NFL draft choice in 2001 after a celebrated college career at Virginia Tech. Was the fourth Falcons #1 overall pick in club history (Tommy Nobis in 1966, Steve Bartkowski in 1975, Aundray Bruce in 1988)

Roddy “Another Drop” White can go straight to Hell! And take Keith “No Tackle” Brooking with him. The Falcons were on their way to a double digit blowout before butterfingers fumbled. Another key drop would have removed team from shadow of its goalposts. Only a drop by a receiver left completely alone by Brooking in the back of the end zone kept the Panthers from securing a first half touchdown instead of field goal. Hey, we all saw it! Other than that, an acceptable two quarters. Now to see if this team possesses a killer instinct. I certainly hope so!

Only you bumpkins would bash a pro bowl bound receiver…LOL. He made a great catch on the sideline & was robbed of it…but of course you won’t acknowledge that. You didn’t dog Ryan for throwing a momentum-killing pick in the Denver game. Oh, that’s right, you didn’t notice that. They lost that game because of Roddy. Here’s a clue, they lost that game because they couldn’t run the ball or stop the Denver offense. No worries, I won’t mistake your personal biases with you actually having a clue about the game of football.

crabapplejoe, so what he said he lost it? He was being hard on himself…as most pro bowl receivers are. I know you want to join the bash-Roddy-bandwagon, but I’d like to believe you know a little more about football than to pin today’s lack of 2nd-half defense (no pass rush or run stoppage) & playcalling on Roddy. crabapplejoe, I agree about the defense. I must say that I’m impressed with their overall effort this season. I’d like to see an upgrade in defensive personnel during the offseason for sure. I think the D-coordinator is getting as much as he can out of them. I’d DEFINITELY say focus on bringing in some defensive playmakers for next year. A pass-rushing defensive end would make a world of difference. A shutdown corner wouldn’t be bad either, but if we can only have one then either of those would do. It would be a significant shot in the arm for the defensive unit.

Ha! Pussycats declawed!
Let’s see:
1.Our offensive and defensive lines played rather well, with the nod going to the offensive line for great protection. The defensive line made some great, timely plays.
Matt Ryan didn’t throw a touchdown, but he didn’t come close to throwing an interception either. 17/27 for 259 yards. And as usual, he really got things going with the no-huddle offense. How many rookie quarterbacks have you seen that can do that, plus check-down correctly at the line of scrimmage? I’m not sure I remember the last time we even had a veteran quarterback that was good at that. Jeff George, I think…but nobody since then…Anyway, the guy hooked up with 7 different targets, and three receivers had 4 catches apiece. Nice work once again by the rookie quarterback.
Turner sets a personal record with 4 touchdowns and gets well over 100 yards rushing. That is one tough guy with all the tackles he breaks. Norwood didn’t get the ball much today, but he’s always a threat to do something big with that instant 6th gear he has.
Speaking of speed, how about the day Harry Douglas had?! A huge punt return, and a very big catch in the 4th quarter. This guy has promise written all over him, especially if he can stay healthy.
The defense had it’s usual number of breakdowns, but also the usual (here lately) number of hold-fast plays. The Panthers are able to run and pass anytime they hit the field, but we stopped the defense stopped them enough when it counted. The last touchdown thrown by Delhomme was an also-ran. Davis and Abraham highlighted much of the evening with three sacks of Delhomme. Meanwhile, it seemed that even when the Cats were able to run, there was a swarm of black helmets coming. Top tacklers were Coleman and Brooking.
Our special teams continues to overmatch the opposition. On kickoffs, our guys are getting to the returner very quickly, and very solidly. Rarely is there a missed tackle. In fact, teams seem to be having plenty of trouble getting past the 20 0r 25 yard line against us. On returns, we’ve managed to become a consistent threat/danger and usually can get to at least the 25 every time. On punts, we seem to have a number of guys that will hurt you, the latest being Douglas. Gotta love it.
So….where are our favorite foils and their smug predictions? Somebody call 911 for PANTHERS, CAROLINA, and local village schlomoe Vick Supporter. I heard someone say they’re choking….on a hairball no less…

memo to welikesheep, of course a TEAM wins & a TEAM loses, u think ur teasing but the needle is stuck on ur record player. (translation: old fart) no one should be giving Ryan all the credit & Roddy all the blame, however, unless Roddy sucked on ur breast 25 yrs. ago, he can withstatnd a little critisism on dropping passes. It brings back bad memories of his drops of MV7 passes (who i still like as a QB). A few more catches of MV7 passes would have given us a playoff team in 06. Roddy’s a big boy, he gets credit & critisism when its deserved,

south ga. boy, you so missed my point. Okay, one more time for you (translation: I’ll simplify). As Finneran said, nobody even expected Roddy to make a tough catch prior to this season. We’re probably the only city that sees him this year as anything less than a pro-bowler. Of course he should’ve secured the ball today. Of course the fumble today was a turning point in the game. But as for LAST WEEK (get it?), I just don’t think his drop was any more to blame for the loss than the pick that Ryan threw. Better yet, I don’t think that either of their mistakes was more to blame than the porous defense. Ooops, there I go defending Matt Ryan. As for your “sucked on ur breast” comment, that might say a lot about your class/tact…or lack thereof.

(u must be the sensitive kind) at least u came out of ur “holier than thou” persona and spoke like a real person instead of ur incessant “i’m smarter than the rest of u” posts for the last 3 hours. Of course, no 1 play wins or loses a game by itself, but there r drastic momentum changers in the course of a game, and just about the time i was begining to have confidence in roddy, he has given me pause in the last 2 weeks, and unless ur Roddy’s agent or brother, he has deserved criticism without u, in ur snobbish and arrogant way, accusing anyone who dare speak ill of him as being prejudist or ignorant. now let those words bathe over ur gigantic ego, i know it will take a while

Why are people still discussing Vick. That story is could’ve, should’ve, would’ve. I enjoyed the time he played but that was like 2006. I was skeptical about Matt Ryan based on the needs of the team but He was an excellent choice based on what he is doing today. We actually could be 9 and 2 if it weren’t for the call in Philly and White having a missed the TD in the Denver game. White actually missed a couple that game that I expected him to catch “this year”. I think we can beat anyone except the Giants. That running game is brutal. You can’t ask amymore from Ryan as a rookie or a veteran. Go Falcons!
