Falcons didn’t bring their hammer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In this little space last week, we shared the football parable about the hammer and the nail.
We advised that if the Falcons got the chance they had better keep the hammer down on Denver quarterback Jay Cutler. He’s budding little Elway. Taking back victories from the jaws of defeat. He’d just did it to Cleveland with a stirring fourth quarter rally.
The Falcons defense had a chance to close Cutler out a couple of times. Protecting a 20-17 fourth quarter lead, the Falcons needed a stop. Cutler’s 47-yard strike to Brandon Marshall converted a third-and-7. Chris Houston’s coverage was tight, but he wasn’t able to dig the ball out.
On the 9-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Graham, Cutler was flushed out of the pocket and it looked like defensive end Jamaal Anderson would have a shot for a sack. With the game on the line in the fourth quarter, you can’t let the opposition drive 83 yards. Also, it was a bit troubling that four of the top five tacklers were defensive backs.
You have to give Roddy White credit for stepping up to talk about his dropped touchdown pass. It would have been a difficult and magical catch. But White didn’t hide in the locker room or slip out back the door of the Georgia Dome. He came out and talked about the play.
You get the feeling White’s maturation process has come full cycle.
We’ll have to see if the Falcons bring their hammer for Carolina on Sunday. Remember it’s a 4:15 p.m. start.
No matter what they say this week, this is a “must win” game if the Falcons have any aspirations of winning the NFC South. They are 1-2. They can’t drop to 1-3. Then the best they could finish is 3-3. I’m sure it’s happened before, but there aren’t many teams to win their division with a .500 record.
How troubling was the 83-yard drive for you? Do you think White will bounce back and continue his march to the Pro Bowl? Do you buy the theory that Carolina is ripe for the taking after meek performances against Oakland and Detroit the last two weeks?

Carolina is not “ripe for the taking” by the Falcons defense that showed up against Denver!

Tough loss for Falcons. Broncos came out and in my opinion where very physical. We seemed like we were the team that “thought” we shoud win this game just by showing up.
I don’t like that ‘wild cat” formation they were trying to run. Let’s jsut stick to what was working for the first 9 weeks.
Ryan didn’t play poorly he just played well like a rookie. He had been lights out for a couple of weeks and didn’t get us in the end zone like he had been…and instead we had to settle for FG’s. For this team to sustain leads beacseu our D is not that great…Ryan has to get us in the endzone. We did it against the Saints…but not agianst the Broncos.
Seemed like we were 3rd and long all day! Denver did a good job of holding the running game down on 1st down.
Denver came out and drilled the D the opening drive of that game. Cutler made some good throws and unlike the Saints game where we got good pressure on Brees…we got no pressure on Cutler. If you don’t get pressure on a player like Cutler he will do exactly what he did…and that is carve any team up like he did the Falcons on Sunday.
Bottom line is Denver looked really prepared and played the game like it was a “Must Win” as if they all aren’t, but thats my take.
Gotta get back to work. A big game coming up this week!!!!!
GO FALCONS!!!!!!!

The 83 yard drive did bother me some. Everything for Denver had to be done almost perfectly. I don’t recall that the falcons blew it on that drive it was that the bronco’s didn’t. “Suffering is the prelude to Glory.” Sometimes you have to be humbled before you can succeed. The falcons have had so much good stuff being said maybe they needed a little humility. It may make them a better team. As one blogger said in previous blogs I quote, ” One heartbeat baby.”

Most troubling was the third and goal pass from the nine. Everyone had stayed home on the scramble. Brooking and Foxworth were in posiiton to prevent a scramble of geting into the endzone, so it was disappointing to see Milloy a vet, get caught by biting on the scramble and allowing a second rate tight end to get depth on him. Really a bad fundamnetal play that cost us the game. Too bad winning games when you don’t play your best are a true measure of playoff teams.

Where was Jerious Norwood?
Seemed that the Bronco’s D was focused on stopping Turner. (Who looked slow all day) Why not bring in more speed with Norwood to counteract the D’s speed?
Houston should have knocked that ball out of the receivers hands.
Need to score more redzone touchdowns. Too ofter settling for field goals.

The Falcons didn’t have energy on either side this week. You could feel it in the Dome. The defense didn’t get up for Cutler like they did for Brees. Guess who has the most yards thrown this season behind Brees? Yep, Cutler. Yet no pressure - heck, maybe Denver’s O-line is better.
Wildcat - Falcons do it every game, never works too well. And we ran it with Jason Snelling? Let’s put the gadget box done and run the west coast offense that has made Ryan successful.
I think we miss Sam Baker.
Lastly, our punting game sucked. Koenen and the coverage. We had no respect for Royal, and he cost us mucho field position.

One play can make a game. Falcons just ended up on the wrong end of it. A miracle catch by Roddy at the end would have been our “one play” to win obviously.
It’s funny that there’s so many Falcon haters. They already proved all of you wrong - 6 Wins - a chance to be .500 or better - a chance at the playoffs?? Not even that #7 guy gave us a chance at that his last 3 seasons.

The Falcons played well. At the end of the day, the Broncos made the plays.
I was very impressed with the Broncos, D-Line. They were very physical, stopped the run, and harrassed Ryan repeatedly.

Panthers officially end Cinderella season! Will it be another key drop by MV7 groupie? Another Keith “No Tackle” Brooking and friends defensive meltdown? Unaggressive playcalling from Mike Petrino? Special team miscues? Falcons will play just good enough to lose close. Apologists will point to next game then next as losing streak grows. The 6-3 feel good start (which should have been 7-3 with playoff implications) becomes 9-7 or 8-8 final record. Dense Falcon fans will proclaim wonderful success in rebuilding season. Defeats should never be embraced! True fans will point to stumble after solid start. Yes, all professional sports outcomes are fixed. Have my suspicions about college!

Let’s see: 1/ what happened to blitzing/disrupting the QB? 2/ how did their slight Oline make our D look like a sieve? 3/ where did their “non-injured running backs” come from? 4/ did anyone else think this was a trap game?
That being said, this is still a team on the upswing. Go Falcons; beat PANThers.

Excellent suggestion! If Falcons must run Wildcat then use DJ Shockey. Defenders will have to defend both run AND pass NOT just run. Superior observation! Oh, both Falcons and Thrashers allegedly played well on same day. Just good enough to lose. Do not give a damn what quitter Hawks do!

My goodness—-if I had a chance before the season to beat Chicago and Green bay and lose by four to Denver——I would take it.

i felt this was a trap game all along. we could’ve won the game and probably should’ve but we didn’t. the bottom line is the out played and out coached us. i read people killing roddy over his drop, but the guy has been lights out all year and it would’ve been one hellva catch.
it’s great that we as fans can actually be upset over a loss this season. nobody outside of flowery branch though this season woul be going the way it is and for us to be upset over a loss in a “rebuilding” year in november is great. 6 games left, 4-2 gets us in the playoffs, 3-3 gets us on track for 2 consecutive winning seasons.

We are going to crush Carolina. They can’t pass and we will blow up their run. This game was a trap game. Denver had 10 days to prepare, and we just came of an emotional victory against over NO, and we still almost pulled it off. I am not concerned. We are going to win this game - easily!!!

Matty Ice made the pass he had to make to win the game. Only Roddy could catch that ball, placed it perfectly. In watching the replay however, I am not certain that, had Roddy caught the ball, he would’ve had both feet in bounds. Still one heck of a pass and tremendous effort on White’s part.
While frustrating, I think it is fantastic that we can even talk about these things at this point in the season. Remember last year? We were counting the days until that nightmare was over. I am proud of our Falcons!

Roddy’s more than taken the blame for this: Manned up; ‘nuff said. And how about the impressive pass earlier in the game where he and Ryan beat Dre Bly?
All the receivers have improved, and Roddy’s been the WR leader. Here’s hoping Laurent comes back soon from his injury because, the little I’ve seen him play, he’s nimble and an amazing contortionist in catching balls.
One other note: Lofton was everywhere!

Our pass rush is the worst in the NFL. Beyond pathetic. The secondary then gets a bad rap for not covering, even though the receivers have all day to get open. This sad reality is slowly eroding confidence and morale from the ENTIRE team. Sad but true. Until the Falcons get true NFL quality DT help they are going nowhere. End of story.

Don’t run the wild cat formation. Just line the running back up next to the QB and do a direct snap to the RB. Haven’t seen us make anything off that formation for two games now.
Falcons need to speed up getting to the line and running the play when the clock is running down. Didn’t see mucn Hurry Up during the last five minutes.

In defense of the Falcons and especially the defense (Abraham in particular) on the winning drive for Denver the refs were not watching the game because most of the D-line especially Abraham were being held every play. I don’t want to hear their is holding every play, this was blantantly obvious. Oh an Jimv, Ryan did have a good day except for the interception that mostly likely cost us the game. But he is a rookie and we have to take the good with the bad. Im still proud of the Team and effort they have shown all season. GO FALCONS!!!!!!

Its really a shame the Falcons lost to Denver this past Sunday. The Falcons are CLEARLY the better team of the two, but the Falcons couldt prove it on Sunday. Ryan looks so wonderful at quarterback and he rarely ever makes a mistake. Ryans deep bomb to Roddy White late in the game went right through Whites hands. Even though it would have been a difficult catch for White, White could have and should have caught it and I believe White lost his concentration on that play. I dont feel that White has come full circle and has gone back to when he used to drop balls. I believe White came into this game so wired and fired up that he dropped his two first balls because he couldnt settle down at the start of the game. Then later he became so hyped up on that late deep ball that he dropped which was crucial to the Falcons chances. In between those drops, White had over 100 yards of receiving yards. So White still had an all-pro day, since only the better receivers go for 100 yards. I still feel that White hasnt yet arrived because he sometimes slips into his old ways and his old habits start surfacing where he drops balls and coughs up opportunities. White will continue to get better and there will come a time when White will be more consistent and will hang onto the football. Of course, White will never be like Jerry Rice who was ALMOST PERFECT in his career. I believe in 16 seasons of watching Jerry Rice I saw Rice drop only ONE BALL his entire career, which was absolutely ASTOUNDING. White is almost there but not quite yet. Jenkins is also vastly improved over last year and so is Finnerin. However ALL THREE of these receivers have the tendancy to slip back into their old habits of dropping balls. I cant complain because those receivers have held onto enough passes to give the Falcons six wins this year. They have also dropped enough to contribute to four losses. Its heart breaking because I know the Falcons were capable of being 8-2 at this juncture if they had just played with a little more poise against Philly and Denver. I think the Falcons are vastly better than Philly and Denver and should have stomped both of those teams, but should the Falcons see those teams in the future Im sure they will get revenge and beat them into submission. I along with many of the fans took this loss hard and it feels so empty because the division is so strong and all the teams in it are winning. The Falcons have the best team in the division, however, and I do believe they will prevail in the end. If the Falcons win the remainding games on the schedule and finish 12-4, I think they will get a playoff spot and go far into the playoffs. I think the Falcons are CAPABLE of winning the superbowl this year. I only say that after the Chicago game when the Falcons played like champions in the final 11 seconds of that ball game. It was a game that should have been an instant classic and I hope to see that game on ESPN classic real soon.

Denver was coached and prepared better than we were. There were (seemingly) no adjustments made to counter the obvious intention of Denver to stop the run. Our D played well enough to win, could have used a sack or a big play here and there, but I just thought that Denver out prepped - and as such - out coached us. I will agree 100% though with the comment made about us even talking about being in the hunt - not for just a few wins, not for redemption, not for getting fans back in the game, but here we are talking about WINNING the DIVISION…not a wild card…But getting in a poistion to WIN the thing…Heck yes, this is better!

Except for two big runs, Burner Turner did not impress yesterday. He needs to step it up if the Falcons are to challenge for the Wild Card. Dallas has Romo back and they play 4 of their final 6 games at home. The Bucs are stronger than both the Falcons and the Panthers, frankly. We have our work cut out for us. And one more thing—let’s give Roddy a break. That pass was marginally catchable in-bounds.
By TinkerBell
November 17, 2008 3:19 PM | Link to this
Dr. Warren: you are wrong about the pass to Rotten White. The pass was NOT marginally catchable; it went right through Whites hands. White is paid MILLIONS of dollars to catch those balls and he failed at executing the play. White lost concentration on that play and had a lapse in concentration and execution. I think that the only way to shut up the bandwagon fans and the ignorant fans who know nothing about football is for the falcons to SWEEP the remainding six ballgames, finish the season at 12-4, win all of their playoff games including the superbowl game, leaving them as superbowl champions. This will silence all the critics and the stupid, ignorant fans who keep slamming white as though he dropped Ryans pass on purpose.

I saw a show on television about lion cubs raised in captivity, because their parents had been killed by hunters. The thing was, once these cubs grew up to be sleek 2-year olds, who could chase down a gazelle in a flash, with a natural instinct to chase it down (instinct and hunger), when they had the gazelle down on the ground, three young lions on top of it, they just sat there panting, until the gazelle wiggled free and ran off. It is not instinctive to kill. They needed to be taught how to choke a gazelle to death with a bite to the neck. Then they needed to be taught how to rip and chew the belly open, exposing the tasty treats a gazelle offered. Instead, these cute young lions would still need to be hand fed by the people running the wildlife preserve.
The point of this: The young Falcons have not yet learned to kill their opponents. They are only at the point of enjoying the chase; but Sunday the Broncos wiggled free. It ran away with a victory, after killing the Falcons.
Forget the hammer down metaphor. This season is about learning how to win. You learn to win (often) by losing. The Falcons learned they do not have a Drew Brees or Jay Cutler at quarterback (yet), who can drag the team to victory single-handed, with a fourth quarter barage (200 yards, throwing the ball 20 times). Ryan also is no Mike Vick, willing to tuck the ball and run, jump, and leap to the pile-on, as time expires.
Ryan could have run 18 yards for a first down on 3rd and 18. But, he didn’t. He threw to White; but the throw really was not catchable by 99.5% of the human population. He should have thrown a hail mary to the end zone on 4th and 18, hoping for a deflection TD, or a defensive penalty. But, he threw an air ball when about to be sacked. Matt Ryan learned that once the prey has got up and run off, its too late to run after it, if you got the “rubber legs and dry tongue”.
Those young lions (Falcon rookies being the difference in 2008 and 2007, mostly) should have just killed the gazelle and had lunch. Alas. You live, you learn. You learn, you live right. You get hungry enough, you start making things up, or you die. I believe the Falcons will learn. Give them time.
Then … there’s that biorhythm theory, where no team can put the hammer down two weeks in a row. Its just too exhausting, especially when the ace on the defensive line is nursing a neck stinger.

Bob and SCDawg are so right. Did Denver duck holding calls because they are smaller than we are?
And, yes, you got me started on clock management. Losing 5 extra seconds at the end of the 2nd quarter by not calling a T0 until 15 seconds remaining meant that we only tried one play. (Before kneeling twice??? Send WRs running long and TEs pulling short sideline patterns, Drill & Burner provide extra pass protection, and let Ryan take his best shot.) High risk? No, likely manageable if its a truly long pass. And think of the reward: the tenor of the second half could have changed with three or seven more points before halftime… as well as a 7-3 standing.
Just a little vent. I’m still a Falcons fan … and fan of the new management.

Jenkins dropped a ton of balls last year and few this year already. Finneran, as I recall, probably dropped as many as 100 balls per season when Vick was quarterback. However, all three receivers have looked vastly improved this season and are starting to look like all-pros. There are times, however, when all three receivers, NOT SIMULTANEOUSLY, fall back into their old ways of dropping balls. I know for a fact that Roddy dropped at least three on Sunday because I saw him myself drop three balls. Finneran didnt drop any and I dont believe Jenkins dropped many but I am not convinced yet that these three receivers are a reincarnation of Jerry Rice, who in my opinion is the greatest receiver of them all.

COACH SMITH IS SPEAKING TO US at 4:20 p.m. today. Send along some questions. I’ll try to get them in.
I’ve got some questions for him about the linebacker play and how the running game was shut down. Hopefully he has an update for us on Sam Baker.
Nobody has seen big Sam. But PR staff member Ted Crews has assured me he’s still alive. He reportedly comes in to rehab in the morning and is gone before the media gets here.
Last week, Coach said they may have an update in 7 to 10 days on Big Sam. I’m I’m counting right that was 8 days ago.
Also, they have to do something with Renardo Foster this week.

About dropped passes - I’m convinced it’s those gloves all receivers wear now. I’ve been watching football for most of my nearly 50 years and I can tell you, even mediocre receivers would snag the ball if it got anywhere near close to them - they couldn’t get open, but they could catch.
All it takes is the tiniest split second of missed communication between brain and hands and the ball is tumbling harmlessly away. Over and over again you see these receivers who would rather look good than be good, fumble around and swat at the ball as if in the middle of a brain fart. And that’s what it is - the eyes lag behind the fingers, and there is just enough of it to prevent the catch. The brain needs instant feedback from the hands to know when to grab on to the ball.

I think Atlanta is a Good team, but we are rebuilding still. We are not there yet, our flaws have come out. We DO NOT have a pass rush, we have one @ times, but a consistant rush we do not have. J. Abraham is the only player who can get after the QB, we need to get a huge push in the middle to push the pocket back. We do not have a inside pass rush push. Thus is why we give up the big plays and only got to Kutler once. We still need another good corner, but we need to get better on the defensive front. Jamal Anderson ” BUST ” Grady is good against the run, but we need a younger big guy with a quick step to push the pocket back into the QB’s face, and Abe isn’t getting younger. We need to look at the D-Line hard in the off season. Also We still need bigger Offensive linemen, We still do not run consistantly. We get better on the run line and we will be great. We are a solid competitive team, we are not playoff worthy yet. I love the birds, but I am a realist. We need to get better at running harder, and getting after the QB. remember everyone we are rebuilding here and not supposed to talk playoffs. I am proud of what we have done and hope to do better this season, but remember we still are rebuilding.

That last drive was completely the result of that one long pass reception. If you run that play 10 times in a row you may make that catch 4 out of 10. I like the fact that the Falcons on constantly keeping themselves in the game with a chance to win.
Too much over analyzing on this team right now. They are in good shape and are still the talk of the league right now.

Ask coach Smith about getting after the QB, we just seem to NEVER get a solid push up the middle to make the QB drift to a Defensive end. I see Abe getting doubled and chipped, but we can not get a good push up the middle. Ask him how we are going to address it the rest of this season, as I am sure they will work on that in the off season. Just ask when will we get a push in the middle.

The Falcons are not, repeat NOT in the hunt for the NFC South title. Carolina is really three games ahead of Atlanta not two.
The loss is not the worst thing in the world. One thing that I have noticed is that the dome is really quiet when the opponent has the ball. That takes away a real advantage that the Falcons should have.

Hey This Gets Old: I believe you are wrong about the Falcons not being in the hunt. I think they are because I heard one of the most renowned sports people just last week when the Falcons were 6-3, a former NFL player who is now a sports analyst for ESPN TV say he felt the Falcons were the fourth best team in football behind Tennessee, Pittsburgh and Carolina in the power rankings. I totally agree with him and if Roddy White had made the catch on the deep ball to him late in the game yesterday and the Falcons held on and won the game and were now 7-3, EVERYONE would have echoed his same thoughts. I really dont care what anyone thinks about the Falcons because I judge them based on my football expertise. The Falcons have the BEST combination of running and passing in the NFL with Turner and those three all-pro wide receivers: Finneran, Jenkins and White. The Falcons are spectacular on defense as well with all-pros Lawyer and Malloy and John Abraham, who is incidentally currently the best pass rusher in the association. I think that the Falcons are better and more balanced than Tennessee, Pittsburg and Carolina and we will find out next Sunday just how good the Falcons are and are indeed better than the Panthers because I am expecting the Falcons to rout the Panthers 56-3. We will soon all know about the Falcons and I hope the fans are starting to get as excited as I am about Arthur Blanks great football team.

losing stinks but losing is necessary in the maturation process. Hopefully, the Falcons learned this weekend that showing up with determination and a will to win is crucial in the NFL.
We will see how much they have learned this week on Sunday. Carolina has struggled the last 2 weeks against teams the Falcons blew out.
I’m confident that the coaches will plan an agressive game this Sunday and that the players will execute.
Still amazing though that we are disappointed about possibly not making the playoffs. The honest truth is that if we were told the Falcons would win 6 games this year, we would have been ecstatic.

A lot of fans are concerned about the Falcons because they feel that the Falcons got a false start at 6-3, and are fed up with their 6-4 record because they think that their 6-4 record will continue to go sour and will end up at 6-10. I am here to assure you that the Falcons 6-4 record will finish at 12-4 and the team will probably become Super Bowl Champions! That is the direction that I think the Falcons are heading in. Go Falcons!

Great game. The better team won. If you want to talk about a dropped pass on that last drive, talk about Denver’s LB Winborn dropping a pick 6.

Yes, the 83 yard drive was troubling to put it mildly but not really surprising. With no pressure on Cutler, he’s going to march down that field. Dimitroff’s number 1 priority is going to be getting some help at end for Abe. Jamal just ain’t doing it. Can he play linebacker & switch Boley to end? Why can’t we blitz with a safety? Too afraid to leave our corners unprotected? Some times you have to gamble to get results. Ryan played like a rookie for once, made a few bad decisions & threw a really bad pic that ended up costing us points. He will learn from it as he seems to do & move on. The playcalling is just awful, it is just so predictible that we run on every 1st down, teams know this & are stopping us! Mix it up Mularkey! Why can’t Finn play more either? Did you see how awesome he was on Sunday?!!! He can be a QB’s best friend so let him. Good for Roddy for manning up & answering questions, that is great & I respect him for that. But we didn’t lose the game b/c of him. It was a combination of errors that we couldn’t overcome. But we can beat Carolina, we just have to not let them run all over us, literally! Put some pressure on Delhommey & he’ll get happy feet!! Go Birds.

I dont know if it’s me or not but does micheal turner round as if he’s scared to get hit he doesn’t hit the hole hard to be 240 pounds and when he’s getting ready to get hit he slows down to take the hit instead of delievering the hit. I like turner but he needs to run more like a big back(brandon Jacobs)

Looks like FALCONS are on everybody’s radar. I sure missed my prognostication on this one. RYAN had the game-winner in WHITE’s hands. Just couldn’t control the ball. Oh well.

I agree with Singletary. Roddy White has “manned up.” He has taken responsibility, something that few, if any, players (to remain nameless) from the past couple of years have done. He’s really improved since his eggdropping days, but nobody’s perfect.

Lay off the secondary. Nobody can cover for as long as Cutler had to throw the ball. It bordered on the ridiculous. And I honestly cannot remember seeing one blitz. I’m not saying they didn’t try one or two, but there was no evil intent to it. See the NY Giants and Pittsburg Steelers defense for examples of evil intent on defense. We don’t even try to send additional pressure on obvious passing downs, and if it continues, we will get lit up by every decent QB for the remainder of the year.
Poor coaching lost this game, because there was plenty of time to do some things differently on offense and defense. This is the second game lost to poor coaching, so we are about on schedule for a rookie coaching staff.
Would it destroy the “process” to open things up a little on offense and defense? After winning 6, I would forgive them for losing out the rest of the way, if it looks like they are playing to win all the time, instead of sometimes looking like they are trying real hard not to lose the game.

Nell, you’re right. Turner doesn’t hit the defenders. He does not fall forward. He doesn’t finish runs with authority. He has good vision and good speed, but is not punishing for a big back. Try Snelling.

Did you see the interception HALL got against the ‘boys. He was beat clean, but ROMO missed behind OWENS by five feet. Perfect position for MeANGELO trailing the play. Whew.! If this is an example of his abilities at this point, I say bring back LEIGH TORRENCE. That’s the CB he replaced.

Agreed - Turner needs to hit the hole like he wants to crush somebody, instead of waiting for something to open up and then getting taken down by a DB’s ankle tackle.
Also, Roddy ain’t an All-pro, he’s nice and gets open and made a couple plays by outmuscling the corner, but he had drops on the first two and that next to last play. All pros catch every ball. Andre Rison wasn’t my favorite guy, but the ball stuck in his hands everytime.
We got to blitz! Punish some folks D. Let Lawyer knock some sense into Jake on Sunday!
Isn’t it great to actually have something to get excited about on Sundays again?!!

THe only real pass rusher we have is Abraham but he is injury prone, look for Coach Smith to address that need in the off season,he knows the deal. I don’t think we blitzed much becsuse Cutler moves so well in the pocket and he has a quick release.(at least that;s my theory)
I don’t think our linebackers had such a great game. THat dude for Denver Winston?? He was playing like he ws on something. Like he had a bad grudge, impressive.
ANyone notice that Cutler looked dumb as dirt sitting on the sideline by himself, no leasership skills,no enthusiasm etc. He looked bored or something. Now I guess that proves you don’t have to be a public relations major and look intelligent to be a very good QB.

Roddy White was more than likely thinking about getting both feet down in bounds when he let that potential TD pass clang to the turf. He’s had a problem with drops throughout his career, and even this year he’s had his fair share of drops but mostly in not so crucial situations. But it’s nice to see that the Falcons have found a coaching staff that emphasizes timing routes in the passing offense, so that the WRs and QB can rely on instinct and minimize mistakes. That makes such a huge difference when it comes to execution. Regardless of how this season ends up for y’all, Mike Smith and company looks like a coaching staff y’all can be proud of for a long time.
On another note, it’s nice to see that the QB no longer gets blamed for drops around here though. Wonder why that is. I guess I’ll take the high road and assume that Falcons fans have grown up.

D-LEDBETTER-I guess I would have 2 questions:
Did we out smart ourselves on the 2nd and 20 screen pass to Snellings? I mean i like the paly call….but to our 3rd string TB? Where was Norwood…the guy you wantt o get the ball on those types of plays. I like Snellings don;t get me wrong….but when we need yards and points get it in playmaker hands.
The time out on 4th and 18. My opinion as an arm chair Sunday coach of course…is that you save the timeout for defense. Your chances of getting a 4th and 18 are 1 in a thousand wether you call the timeout or not. Why not give yoursefl 2 chances instead of 1. If you save the time out for defense not only do you still run your paly on 4th and 18..with the same % chance no matter the use of the time out….but if you stop the run on 3 run plays by Denver…you get the ball back. There wouldn’t be alot of time left…but I’ll take my chances on 4th and 18…and then get a second chance if we stop them.
Of course that is why I’m not a coach and I would never second guess our coaching staff as to date they have done a great job…but jsut my thoughts as an arm chair Sunday coach
Davenpoop-I hear ya on the QB being blamed. Roddy’s tough attempt doesn’t matter though if Winborn catches that pick 6.

True that Matty Ice practically gift-wrapped a pick to Winborn. Rookie mistake and one he will learn from. He is a rookie after all and people do forget that. Y’all can keep talking about it but its the guys first year playing in the nfl and did you hear what Terry Bradshaw had to say about Matty Ice? Bradshaw talks about how he threw 23 or 24 something interceptions his rookie year and Matty Ice only has like 6 or 7 in ten games. He will learn to make better throws. I know why the QB is not being blamed for drops anymore. Because he actually throws, he actually leads, he can actually see over the line and hes in sync with his receivers. The dogcatcher wasnt doin none of that. But he sure could run. You know why he ran so much an could not stay in the pocket? Because he could not see over all those big linemen and by then the play had broken down or the route was already run. Dogcatcher was never going to be a guy who could stay in the pocket period. He always had to come out of the pocket just so he could see the field and that is why they did what was called ZONE BLOCKING all the time because they never knew where he would be back there, roaming around trying to see. Teams caught on to how he could be stopped and the rest is history. Thats one reason why we didnt get to the post season after 2004. Correct if I’m wrong but ol Vick did not go to jail until last year so whats the excuse the whole time from 2004 until then?

the falcons have the same record as the cowboys, patriots and skins.
Do you folks really believe the dirty stinkin birds are in the same class as these teams?
The falcons are a lousy team folks. They have lost every competitive game against a team with a winning record.
You are a bunch of losers and you know it. You simply cannot put a bunch of unproven players together and expect things to click.
Your next victory will be against the rams.
In the NFL games are decided by at least one turnover. At this point in his career Matty Ice is good for one int against any decent defense.
Because of your record this year your schedule will be more competitive next year.
The losses will mount with stiffer competition next year. Sam Baker is injury prone that is why he dropped so far in the draft. If the guy couldn’t hold up in the Pac 10 what made the falcons believe he could hold up in 16 games against superior competition.
What is management smoking in flowery branch?

Its really unfortunate for Roddy White because the pass that Matt Ryan gift wrapped to white was an easy catch that great receivers would have caught. Roddy White is not yet a great receiver because he still has a tendancy to drop huge passes at the most inopertune times in ball games. In this case that dropped pass may have cost the Falcons a playoff berth and more importantly may have been the drop that ruined the Falcons season. I dont agree with the previous blogger that Roddy sucks but I believe that Roddy may believe his press clippings that he is an all-pro receiver because I dont think he has yet achieved that status as an all-pro, regardless of how many catches and yards he has this season. All all-pro receivers, such as a Jerry Rice, make ALL the catches particularly the ones that are gift wrapped directly to his bread basket. I dont think all the heat for the loss should be directed to Roddy White because Matt Ryan did throw two interceptions in the game as well and other Falcon players not having particularly their best games. In addition, the special teams unit had a poor game which also contributed to the loss. If Roddy White had made that catch late in the game he would have caught the present that was perfectly gift-wrapped to him by Matty Ice. In other words, on that play the ball thrown to Roddy White was a PERFECTLY THROWN BALL BY MATTY ICE, a throw that Mike Dogfighter Vick could never have thrown if his life depended on it.

White was so busy trying to get two hoofs in bounds on the long pass to him late in the Denver game that he goofed the play up by letting the ball slip through his outstretched hands and pulling up lame in the end zone. WHITE TURNED YELLOW AS HE COST THE FALCONS THE GAME AND PROBABLY THE SEASON. If White would like to correctly learn the position of wide receiver I recommend for him to watch as many tapes of Jerry Rice as possible. Jerry NEVER dropped a single pass in his entire NFL career and is easily the best wide receiver and possibly the best player to ever play in the NFL.

I will make this as simple as I can. There is a Helluva lot of difference between 7-3 and 6-4. A 7-3 mark puts you in control of your own playoff destiny so to speak. A 6-4 slate means you are average and nothing more. Plus, a team like the Falcons, which has grown accustomed to losing, believe it is in the DNA, simply cannot afford to lose contests which are more than winnable. Yes, the team is doing much better than ANYONE expected. Myself included. No one knew Matt Ryan would make such an immediate impact or that the defense would not surrender 40 points per game. 500 yards, yes, 40 points, no. In fairness, the Falcons are are playoff team when they play with aggressiveness and determination. The team is a bust when it has mental and physical breakdowns like those in the last loss. Should fans expect playoffs? All depends on the next outing. If team falls to 6-5 then successful feel-good season win-wise becomes failure. *Why, because the team itself should expect more. If team goes to 7-4 then a playoff run is not only possible but probable. Poll question should be “Will” not “Can”. Yes, Falcons can defeat Panthers. Will they? Who knows? That is why loss which most want to sugarcoat distresses all true fans who look at the overall picture. If Falcons miss playoffs by a game I will forever hold Roddy “Butterfingers” White responsible. They paid the guy millions of dollars to do one damn thing! Catch the football. Elite receivers are judged by difficult receptions not easy ones. He failed everyone in the loss. Ryan put the ball where it could be caught. Keith “No Tackle” Brooking will remain a liability to a young defense. He may cost us several losses himself by being blocked out by one man, being out of position or being too damn slow. Oh well. Defend him. I respect what he has done in past but recent play has been embarrassing. Yes, I do watch EVERY play of every game. Have since first season. Oh well, hope Falcons pull it off. Playoffs would be nice. God bless.

Hey Y’all:
We started off slow and let Denver build confidence in our hous. We did not throw any long passes against Denvers weak secondary. They clog the line therefore let Matty Ice bomb the hell out of them. He can do it. Have confidence in that. The run was solid when we nedded it but this game was primed for some “BOMBS”. All the plays attempted went wellbut they were just the wrong plays at times. The offense and the defensive line played well except for our not gettin a consistant pass rush and Brooking missing a lot of his assignments on running backs out of the backfield. For a veteran, he appears lost out there, soory to say. I believe it’s time to get some speed and nastiness in the OLB spot to replace Brooking until he improves. But all in all the Falcons played well enough to win. The lost because they started slow and they were not aggrssive in the playcalling on offense and defense. However, even at our worse in the learning process Denver barely survived. We cannot be at our worce in this learning process. We have to be at our “BEST”. That is how we win. That is how become champions. We have to be consistant every week in how we prepare and how we play on any given Sunday. We play with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”. I know the coaches are going to fix what was wrong and come Sunday we will mbe playing angry, nasty ans mad. We the fans feel the loss like you. And we don’t like it. We like you like the winning. It’s time to get back to it in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”. We are “ONE”. We will be at the game to see Ryan “BOMB” the Panthers. Let them stack the line. Matt’s Better than the first game. Hell, the whole team is better and we owe them one in “OUR HOUSE”. As a fan, I am mad and angry and I am looking to take it out on the Panthers. I am sure the Falcon coaches and players feel the same because we are “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!.
SEE YOU AT THE DOME!! TAKE NO PRISONERS.

The reason why Im so upset at the Falcons right now is that they dont realize how good they ARE and how good they can BE THIS YEAR. I know that 6-4 is more than most people expected at this point, considering they were 4-12 ALL OF LAST YEAR, on the heels of a Vick incarceration. That being said, I believe the Falcons should be 8-2 right now, instead of 6-4 meaning I feel they SHOULD have beaten Denver and Philly had it not been for a lack of confidence and swagger against Philly and butterfingers on the part of Roddy White against Denver. Aside from that the Falcons would have been 8-2, sitting tied with Carolina atop the Division. I still feel the Falcons can win their division, but they have to beat Carolina on Sunday afternoon as a starting point. Should they fail to do that, the season is over, because a wildcard spot will be difficult with so many good teams in the conference and their record would be a measely 6-5 facing finishing the year below .500. Should the Falcons beat Carolina and I expect them to, they will only be one game behind Carolina with a win. Then the remainder of the season will unfold like a fairy tale in Camelot, with each week in November and December being packed with thrilling possibilities and Matty Ice delivering exciting win after exciting win with icewater in his veins. I hope the Falcons will be up for the task because the fans of Atlanta have been put through pure hell with Mike Dogcatcher Vick over the last few years. This would be a nice way for the fans to forget that that sick Vick creature ever existed.

The Falcons’ record is inflated due to matchups with the three sorriest teams in the NFL. I’m not convinced the roster is legit. The coaching staff, however, is — and that is enough to sneak a team into the playoffs as a wild card in the NFL.
“In other words, on that play the ball thrown to Roddy White was a PERFECTLY THROWN BALL BY MATTY ICE, a throw that Mike Dogfighter Vick could never have thrown if his life depended on it.”
Idiotic comments like these are part of the reason I don’t comment much here anymore. Amazing how much more educated Hawks fans are than Falcons fans. Go look at the Falcons-Browns game tape from 2006 and see the perfect 60-yard strike Vick threw to Jenkins off his back foot… which of course hit Jenkins in the hands in stride and fell harmlessly to the ground. Every bit as accurate and probably a much more difficult throw than the one Ryan made to White.
Believe it or not appreciating the skills of Ryan and Vick are not mutually exclusive. You can hate Vick for what he did off the field if you want, but it’s pretty f-cked up to try to rewrite history as if Vick didn’t do great things on the field week in and week out.

It tickles me to see the ignorance and uninformed blabbering going on in this post. Things like “the Panthers can’t pass.” “we will blow up their run.” “they’ve won 8 games(including stomping on your team) for no reason.”. Keep thinking that this game will be a cakewalk for you, Falcon fans. We will dominate you up front like we did earlier in the season, and our linebackers will be Mike Turner’s worst nightmare.

As far as I know there have been two quarterback BUSTS over the past 10 years. Bust #1 - Mike Vick/Contract $200+million dollars=result-Jail. Bust #2 - Ryan Leaf/Contract $72 million dollars=result-cut from NFL squad. Both players were #1 picks in the entire league and both of them decended from glory as quickly as they ascended to great potential. The only Ryan Ive ever compared Vick to was Ryan Leaf NOT Matt Ryan because Matt Ryan and Mike Vick are going in opposite directions. Matt Ryan is heading for the Hall of Fame when his playing days are over and Vick has already crash landed and has reached his destination at the bottom of the barrel and cant go any lower than where he already has landed.

I hear you guys protecting Roddy White by saying “that would have been a miracle catch”; however, I disagree because Roddy White has not been a clutch receiver for us whenever we have needed him to catch a ball that drops right into his hands, so we could come from behind and eventually win a game. I remember when we were in North Carolina. It seems that when Roddy White is running across the field from left to right, and the ball is thrown just below his numbers, Roddy fells to catch the ball in crucial third-down situations. We need a clutch receiver. Roddy White is not a clutch receiver; he is only a go-to receiver. A clutch reiver catches balls in crucial situations like the balls that have been thrown to Roddy White. I repeat, if you guys go back and look at some of the previous games that were close, Roddy White has a problem pulling in balls when he’s running left to right where the ball is approaching him in the “stomach” area.

If Mike Vick played on the same team with Terrell Owens, here’s the huddle conversation:
Vick: Everybody block, I’m running left.
Owens: Like heck. I’m going to do a post, and you had better be on target this time.
Result of the play: 15 yard penalty on T.O. for leg whipping Mike Vick for not throwing him the ball.

Roddy Whites missed catch in last Sundays Denver game would NOT have been a miracle catch. It WAS a difficult catch but the ball was catchable and went thru his hands as though his hands were slippery and lathered in butter. It was a tough catch, but a catch that good wide receivers in the NFL routinely make and should catch particularly when they are being paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO CATCH THE BALL. The catch would have given the Falcons the win and enough momentum to win their division. But now the Falcons have to scramble for a wild card berth when they could have controlled their own destiny. I hope the Falcons win against Carolina and get back into the playoff race. It would be a shame if coach Mike Smiths Falcons were denied a playoff berth because of “the Missed Roddy White Catch”. Of course, if the Falcons finish 6-10 I wont care what happens to them anyway.

Woo no longer undefeated in the dome. Sunday we turn Atlanta into Cat-lanta. After back-to-back bye weeks against Oakland and Detroit the Cats will have their claws out. J-Stew and D-Will will be running all over the dome. GO PANTHERS

Hey ATLPanther, I propose a trade. I will trade you to Carolina for Vick Supporter 2. Only an idiot would bet Carolina over the Falcons. Vick Supporter 2 please tell him that Vick owns the Panthers and come this Sunday nothing will change. Falcons win by 28 and Vick finally gets the credit he deserves for being the playmaker he is. Can’t wait for this Sunday. GO VICK!!! Who needs traditional passing? Just tuck it and run!

Vick Supporter2: Stop ranting and raving about Vick. You are wasting your precious time. I dont know why you keep rooting for Vick. Vick cant help the Falcons from his jail cell. Even if you rooted for his prison football team, that is a waste of time because he lied about that one as well. Realize that when Vick gets out of prison he will be forced to retire because he will be way too old to play football. By the time the state of Virginia grabs hold of Vick and tries Vick for dogfighting charges Vick may get another 10 years in prison. So by the time Vick comes out of prison he will probably be gray-haired and be in a wheelchair and in no position whatsoever to help the Falcons, the Raiders or any Arena League Football team do anything. So my suggestion to you is to consider Vick a distant memory because thats all he’ll be in the end anyway. We’ll never hear from Vick again and Canton (the HOF) might even take his rushing record out of the hall of fame for gaining 1000 yards as a quarterback in a single season. They may blot that record out of the books because I dont know if they allow convicted felons records to stand but that is still in doubt. So go on and keep cheering for Vick because you are sincerely wasting your time and he is doing hard time allowing himself to go to the dogs.

Vick Supporter 2: You need to move on from Vick and support Matty Ice. Ice is the best quarterback to come into the league since Dan Marino and Ice’s 1st year status are better than Dans up to this point. Dan is a hall of fame quarterback so that is an indication that the Falcons may have a potential future HOF qb starting for their team right now and you keep bringing up that loser conVickted felon Vick. Are you on crack or something, cant you see the Falcons have turned the corner and have a good thing going with Matt or are you waiting for Vick to return to the Falcons so that he can wrestle away his starting qb job. Hey dude, it will never happen. Matty is here to stay and will perform perfectly from now on. So just forget about yesterdays garbage Mike Vick and get on board with the new administration.

Hey Ledbetter,
Do you write these blogs, then run away for four days? I have a question.
When I read some of the articles you write, I read stuff like: Running Back has hurt rib, Tight End has paper cut, Quarterback has broken heart.
Then you follow this up with something like: Norwood says he expects to play.
Well, duh! I suppose if I was paid lots of money I would say I expect to work to earn my pay - UNLESS You were actually referring to Norwood being the one with the hurt ribs, saying he expected to play with hurt ribs. Why do we have to guess which specific player is on your mind when you generally refer to them by position only. I can understand if you typed notes in your laptop while watching practice; but come on! How about cleaning it up so it can actually be published?!?!

The parade was bigger than the macy’s parade. Tin foil balloons flying everywhere.Valtrax as our sponsor. everyone donated their water bottles they had made into home made bongs and turned them into super soakers. Nobody in the possees stole anyone’s watches or stuck their middle finger up at the crowd. Dogs were free to roam the parade without fear of getting shot or electricuted or drowned. His brother Marcus messed around with girls out of high school for the first time ever. It was outstanding!

Listen Vick Supporter2 fan. Im back. What on earth are you talking about. Mike Vick is eating mush in prison now. He is no position to help anyone. In fact he will NEVER; and I repeat NEVER be 1/10 the quarterback Matt Ryan is. Did you see the Chicago Bears game? That game is the stuff of legends. Ive seen all the great quarterbacks, Im as old as dirt and I have NEVER seen any quarterback in NFL history make the throw that Matt Ryan made to Jenkins when the play started with 11 seconds left on the clock. A million things could have gone wrong on that play, but Matt Ryan was as clutch as ice on that play and made the best throw Ive ever seen. Matty looked as good as Dan Marino or even Peyton Manning on that play. My God, I still cant believe it, it truly was a thing of beauty if you were fortunate to see it. I BELIEVE, in my convoluted mind that that was and is the GREATEST PLAY IN NFL HISTORY. I will hold on to that belief till I go to my grave. I have never seen a better play than that….and the kid is just a rookie. Folks, fasten your seat belts youre in for one incredible ride with Matt Ryan as your quarterback. The ATL is truly blessed to have him. And please dont bring up the name Mike V$$k again unless your recommending a good cough drop.

I mean even I could catch passes from that sissy Ryan! He just puts the ball in the right spot and all —-c’mon! whats so fun about that! Breaking News: Vick just escaped from prison and will start as quarterback for the Falcons against Carolina this Sunday at the Georgia Dome!
By KingCobra
November 22, 2008 1:12 PM | Link to this
I saw in the AJC today where Vick had some of his OWN family dogs fight in the dogfighting ring basically to the death. Basically, his buddy Purnell Peace said that if those dogs couldnt win they would be put to death by hanging, electrocution, drowning, etc. and Vick thought it was funny for this to take place. Yet, many of yall feel that this ape (Mike Vick) should your starting qb for the Atlanta Falcons, irrespective of the fact that we already have a starter (Matt Ryan) who will be a future hall of famer at the position. That means that Mike Vick WILL MOST DEFINITELY GET CUT FROM THE FALCONS ONCE HE IS RELEASED FOR GOOD from prison and I believe that either Dallas (owner Jerry Jones) or Oakland (owner Al Davis) will pick up Vick because those two owners would allow ANYONE play football for them and would so far as to let the Incredible Hulk play football for them if he were available. So there you have it folks, just forget about Mike Vick because quite frankly WE SIMPLY DONT NEED HIM ANYMORE. We have Turner at running back who is an all-pro; we have Abraham and Malloy who are all-pros on defense; we have Roddy White, Jenkins and Finneran who have played like all-pros thus far this season; and finally we have Matt Ryan who in my judgement has been the most accurate and best quarterback in the NFL this year. So folks Mike Vick is now expendable so lets expend him, show him the door and turn the page on this franchise, make the playoffs and win us a superbowl. THE ATLANTA FALCONS HAVE THE PERSONNEL TO WIN THE SUPERBOWL THIS YEAR and I am hopeful that this will take place so that we can undoubtedly forgot about the tumultous MIKE VICK era and put an end to that dark chapter of Atlanta Falcons football.
