I remember Tim Dwight nearly returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. I wonder how that would have changed the way the game unfolded?

Of course, we looked forward to greatness from those in the past too. I can remember when the only thing we looked forward to was the half time show and the dust rising from the infield at the old Fulton County Stadium when the Florida A & M Rattlers marching band took the field. Man, the hair would rise on the back of my neck. They were great. Now we look forward to the Falcons taking the field. Keep up the good work guys.

Its interesting that Jamal Anderson is missing, since the Falcons rode his back to the Super Bowl. I hope they sent him an invitation.
Who doesn’t fondly remember William Andrews? It was sad to see him no longer able to compete, after he blew out his knee. No one had more heart for the game.

William Andrews was my favorite Falcon of all time……powerful bruising running style like Turner has now, but he was a much smaller guy. Too bad he totally blew out his knee in training camp in 1981 (after the 1980 playoff year…That was a great team). That injury pretty much ended his career.
That 1998 Super Bowl run was special, just don’t know why after every good season something always has to go wrong with the Falcons the following year (injuries, player turnover, etc.) to ruin the season and keeping them from stringing together some good years. Hopefully that curse will be broken by the “new breed” Falcons we are now witnessing. I like what I’m seeing so far.

Favorite player / memory was watching William Andrews in a game against the 49ers. He took a swing pass out of the backfield from Bartkowski, took about 3 strides, lowered his shoulder and laid Ronnie Lott flat out. Lott was done for the game - best hit ever.

Hey Y’all:
My favorite Falcons of all time are Deon Saunders and Gerald Riggs. I like Deon because he brought every game as a kick returner and a defensive back. As a kick returner he was the fastest thing I saw on two feet. Remember, he was right out of Florida State and full of life and excitement. He backed down from no one. Noot that he has lost any of that now. Gerald Riggs, on the other hand, was just a large, fast, bruising back who could do it all. By his mild and respectful manner, you would never guess he was such a bruising, nasty, fleet footed running back. I wish we had the right coaches during their reign that could have taken them to the playoff and Super Bowls. Speaking of Super Bowl, the silliest thing I remember was Ray Buchanon wearing a dog collar talking trash about how another player on a team looks. that was one of the childish, in professional behavior I witnessed. And as a fan and former footbal player, I questioned the mentality of him doing that before a big game. All this did was motivate the other team. And it showed by the score. Denver kicked our butts. Ray was looking and feeling real stupid after the game. His behavior during the Super Bowl was not reflective of the season he had that year. I do not know what he was trying to do. What ever it was he failed. Love you Deon and Gerald.
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN. TELL EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He wasn’t invited because he got arrested the night before the biggest game of his life for solicitation of prostitution. I believe he was on his way back from receiving an award for “Man Of The Year” from the fellowship of christian athletes. Sounds like he couldn’t wait for the ceremony to conclude because he had more important thing to do like soliciting a City of Miami cop for sex. He probably did this before most games. Most Johns are addicted to this sort of behavior. he just got caught at the worst possible time. You will live in infamy for your stupid actions Eugene.

I’m really happy some of the earlier posts pointed out William Andrews. To those of you in a, ahem, younger demographic, I wish there were some youtube highlights to appreciate the speed AND power this man had. Anyone know any sites where we could see some clips?
In particular, a run in Denver in which he bowled over a defender (a la Herschel/Bill Bates) then outran the DB’s for a touchdown.
Glad Claude Humphrey is getting some love…hopefully this will be his HOF year!

Deon Sanders is and always be a second rate player. Could not tackle, never went to camp. Decent cover guy but not even a top 10 corner. It was always about # 21 not the team. I remember sitting in the end zone, second row watching William Andrews come thru the line from about the 20 yd line, his shoulders about 2 feet off the ground, all you could see coming is shoulders and knees, ran over everybody. About 900 yds total offense in the game (both teams) What a game!

The 1980 Falcons were the best, even though they did not go to the SuperBowl. They were 12-4 and won the Western Division. Steve Bartkowski was the best to ever play QB here in Atlanta. He had 3500 yards and 31 touchdowns. We beat Philadelphia in our first ever playoff game (I was there). Then we had Dallas beat to go to the SuperBowl. All we needed was one more first down to run out the clock, but they didn’t let Bart throw the ball. After the punt, Danny White drove the field for the TD that beat us 30-27. Probably the most important moment in Atlanta sports along with the Sid Bream slide. Even John Madden had us going to the SuperBowl that year.

Sorry Orlando. The ride TO the superbowl was fun. The actual Superbowl and all of the events surrounding it was an absolute embarassment. There was “Give Up the big Play Ray” Buchanon and his dog collar. There was all of the reports coming back to Atlanta about the Falcons hanging out all day every day at South Beach and partying hard. I watched the Superbowl and thought there was no fight in the team. They left that will to fight at the police station and South Beach. If the Falcons get there again, let’s hope for players with common sense who know what they are there to do. Coaches are not babysitters for grown men.

Scott Case, Jessie Tuggle, Bartkowski, William Andrews, Jeff Van Note… what a team you could make if you could just pick and choose from their history. I also remember a great kicker we used to have, Irish guy I think. I’m embarrassed to say that his name escapes me at the moment (need more coffee) but he was pretty good too. As far as the kicker goes, I believe you speak of Mick Luckhurst. I consider him the “Father of the modern day on-side kick technique”. The best ever to boot. He was English not Irish though. As much as I loved Scott Case, damn what an animal, I lean more to Tom Pridemore. My other faves…The Hammer of course, Van Note, William Andrews, Tommy Nobis, Junior Miller, etc, etc, etc. Not enough room here. But as a surprise, another favorite that I consider to be the best QB in Falcons history, Chris Miller.

Crabapple you have your facts incorrect. They did not beat Philadelphia in the playoffs that year. Their first playoff game was a division playoff game that year against Dallas. Had we beaten Dallas we would have then played Philadelphia in the NFC title game. The Eagles went to the Super Bowl in 80 and lost to the Raiders. The Falcons did play the Eagles 3 years earlier in their first ever playoff game (that is what you are thinking about). It also happened to be the NFL’s first ever wildcard game. I was there also. We scored late in the game on a Bartkowski pass to Jim Mitchell. The next week we lost to Dallas in Dallas.

Vick Supporter, I can certainly remember how many games he has lost in the final quarter vs other teams (especially Tampa Bay) when he dropped back to pass, tried to scrambled and fumbled the ball or tried to throw it and overthrew the reciever. William Cranman, it was not 3 years earlier, it was 2 years earlier, in 1978. It was a cold, drizzly kind of day, Christmas Eve. There was absolutely nothing to cheer for until the fourth quarter, which meant it felt colder sitting out in the weather until then. In the fourth quarter, Bart passed for two touchdowns and the Falcons took a 14-13 lead. The other Polish quarterback, Jaworski, drove the Eagles to a 34-yard field goal attempt (on the Falcon 16 yard line), with 13 seconds left in the game. I was sitting on the top row of the end zone where Michel attempted his kick. It went right over the top of the right upright. The whole crowd collectively held its breath until it was ruled no good, allowing the Falcons to win the game. The only other time I felt Atlanta Stadium rock like it did when that field goal was ruled no good was when Sid Bream was ruled safe at home, in game seven of the 1992 NLCS.
After the Falcons went to Dallas, Roger Staubach was losing the game for the Cowboys. Then Robert Pennywell basically ended Staubach’s game, and the Falcon’s best chance of winning, by driving his facemask two inches into Staubach’s sternum on a late hit. That was what brought on Danny White to beat the Falcons for his first of two times in the playoffs.

A lot of water under the bridge since then and I’m getting a little senior challenged. The team was very similar in 1978 & 1980 and Dallas ended up being the spoiler…so the facts ran together in my memory of the very special Bart years. Thanks for setting the record straight. Glad to know you were at the Philly game also. Have some great memories of old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

The Falcons seem to be leaking out info about the possibility of them running a wishbone type of OFF. They seem to be trying to get into the heads of the Bronco’s DEF to get them geared to stopping the run. I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if we started out using play action to jump on them early with a strong passing attack and then control the clock with our running gm.
Their passing OFF will be a challenge for our DEF. Our overall OFF will be a challenge for their DEF. Our DEF is better than their DEF. Our OFF is much better balanced and has more weapons than their OFF. WE WIN THIS ONE.

I remember Bartkowski cruising around in his black Porsche with a “BART” vanity plate at Lenox Square.—I rememember fat boy John Madden saying the Falcons did’nt come to play in the NFC Championship game against the Vikings when they were behind and he specificly pointed out Jamal Anderson. When the Dirty Birds won in overtime,FAT BOY Madden ate his words.— Rankin Smith was the most incompetent NFL team owner in history.—Atlanta had so many fans hungry for a good team and he tortured us with a laughingstock organization for years. Even now the Falcons have never had consecutive winning seasons. I hope we finally- have good leadership in place.

Keith “No Tackle” Brooking must go! That untalented M++++++++++R was powerless during the long Bronco march to start second half. Always blocked by one player! Always out of position! Liability to young defense! secondary is not worth a damn either. Start of long losing streak?

The Broncos continue to give the Falcons passing lanes, by running up seven man lines. It’s pretty obvious the biggest weakness in the offense is the coordinator. He tries too much to force the run on 1st and 2nd downs and forces Ryan to pass on third and long. There’s a reason why the Falcons lead the NFL on making third and long, and it finds it’s home with the play calling.

I try not to pay attention to what people write some of these blogs. “Vick Supporter 1,2,3,etc.” what is you cause? Bash the Falcons, negative writings about Ryan, stir up a lot trouble? The Falcons didn’t cause Vick his problems, nor make his life what it is. It’s sad to see a person with so much hate and contempt in there life. I hope you get help for your sake.

How bout that TD drive Jockstrap2. Looked like a pretty good NFL qb to me. Vick never had a come from behind win in the 4th qtr. Matty may have his 2nd or 3rd today. Your boy is still in jail and he will neer play for the Birds again.

A bad mistake by Ryan earlier, although our bending-but-tough defense minimized it.
Meanwhile, Ryan, unflustered, keeps our drive afloat with some good play, due to the fact that we can’t seem to get the running game going (and you can’t blame Ryan for that, no matter how much you want to…right now he’s moving the chains).
At first, it looks like an ugly role reversal: The Broncos are the ones who doing all the running, and we can’t seem to stop the run.
And then it happens: Turner for the TD! Yesssssss!
Gotta give Ryan credit for moving the chains with his receivers, converting one 3rd down after another until Turner finally breaks one loose!

But no, let’s wait for the inevitable comments: Turner gets credit for the whole drive while Ryan is a $72 million dollar bust. There. Said it for you this time. Looks like you better hold off on the lotion, buddy. Game isn’t over yet.
Uh, didn’t we beat the saints already? And you better hope Jake Delhomme doesn’t play against us like he did against the sorry-a$$ Raiders last week….we’ll crush Carolina if he does.

The Falcons have to draft a money receiver in the first round. I’m tired of watching Roddy White drop passes when the game is on the line. A touchdown pass to win turns into a drop, that loses the game.

Oh, so Cutler does get credit for his touchdowns instead of his receivers, huh? Interesting. What do you expect from a talking jockstrap.
First, Roddy White drops a sure-fire touchdown pass, then the offensive line breaks down. Great. Just great.
That’s right, the very same guy el jockstrapo wants to give credit for touchdowns thrown by the quarterback, is the same guy who dropped a pass put right in his hands….
4 perfectly thrown, dropped passes. Well, we can’t have that when we can’t establish the run.
Bring on Tampa, Carolina, and New Orleans. Mike Smith will tear these guys a new one and have ‘em ready to rumble.

Could be worse. We could still have Mike Vick as quarterback. Not only would we have lost but we’d have a losing record as well. I fail to see how paying 72 mil for a quarterback has anything to do with having a 27th ranked defense. Sure beats paying 120 mil for a guy that isnt even playing for you because he’s in prison. The defense choked, and that black receiver choked. No arguing the fact we all saw the replay a dozen times. He must have learned that choking from Mike Vick or his supporter.

Completely unacceptable loss! Close does not count for a damn thing. Falcons were not prepared. Broncos were! Cutler outplayed Ryan by a WIDE margin. That unforced interception was a brainf++k by the ignorant rookie QB. Falcon defense totally exposed. Keith “No Tackle” Brooking needs to be put out to pasture or shot! Untalented cur cannot tackle a one-legged elderly woman in a F+++++G wheelchair. Cut him loose! Send Roddy “Another drop” White to the Raiders with his booty buddy DeA++hole Hall. Longtime Falcon Fan. I usually try to avoid this blog for obvious reasons. People act to much like little kids. Adults know how to be civil regardless of what they think. Falcons defense definately needs some upgrades. That Denver scoring drive should have never happened and they should have at least held them to 3. Ryan is a good young quarterback and so was Vick. They play different styles, but to quote Lovie Smith, Matt Ryan is OUR Quarterback so its time to move on. Just support the team and MOVE ON.

Right after the game I was going to come here and post that we should have a contest to see who could predict when “Stendec” would blame the game on Brooking. Presto!…he’s already posted twice about Brooking. Dude, how can you be so predictable. At least you did happen to mention that Roddy White dropped the sure winning touchdown pass from Ryan in the end zone. And JockStap 2 brings his usual drivel…and doesn’t blame his “brotha” “afflete” Roddy White. Its all Ryan’s fault in his pea- sized brain

Vick Supporter cant support the team because he already has an acquired TASTE. His brain cell count is low and his sp@rm cell count is high but it’s all in his mouth. Black receivers for the opposite team catch the ball but white quarterback gets the recognition for it. Home team black receiver doesnt get blamed for dropping touchdown pass while white quarterback doesnt get recognition for anything but one interception.
Only a twisted cum/sucking moron would try to use race and still screw it up like this. Somebody should tell VICK SUPPORTER that swallowing kills brain cells. Maybe the military isnt the only dishonorable discharge he has experienced lol!

Tough loss for Falcons. Broncos came out and in my opinion where very physical. We seemed like we were the team that “thought” we shoud win this game just by showing up.
I don’t like that ‘wild cat” formation they were trying to run. Let’s jsut stick to what was working for the first 9 weeks.
Ryan didn’t play poorly he just played well like a rookie. He had been lights out for a couple of weeks and didn’t get us in the end zone like he had been…and instead we had to settle for FG’s. For this team to sustain leads beacseu our D is not that great…Ryan has to get us in the endzone. We did it against the Saints…but not agianst the Broncos.
Seemed like we were 3rd and long all day! Denver did a good job of holding the running game down on 1st down.
Denver came out and drilled the D the opening drive of that game. Cutler made some good throws and unlike the Saints game where we got good pressure on Brees…we got no pressure on Cutler. If you don’t get pressure on a player like Cutler he will do exactly what he did…and that is carve any team up like he did the Falcons on Sunday.
Bottom line is Denver looked really prepared and played the game like it was a “Must Win” as if they all aren’t, but thats my take.
Gotta get back to work. A big game coming up this week!!!!!

Ah, yes; my favorite memory of Super Bowl 33 was the immortal Rod Smith absolutely BURNING Eugene (The Solicitor) Robinson for a VERY long touchdown from the Great One, #7 John Elway. By the time the runback came from Dwight the game was in the bag! Eugene wasn’t ALL bad, though; he kept the win differential in SB 32 (when he was a Packer) from being 14 points, instead of only 7. Favre had thrown yet another interception to #27 Steve Atwater, and the Great One, #7 John Elway had gotten greedy, and went for the kill shot. Eugene intercepted the Great One, #7 John Elway, in the end zone. Oh, wait; you guys weren’t at THAT game, only Eugene…
My bad.
Memories, what memories!

Billy Johnson, Terrence Mathis, vick, brooking, Jamaal Anderson… I remember being so happy that MY team was finally the one everyone was talking about in 98. How he came back to play after blowing out his knee was proof of his determination to continue playing. William is a kind and generous person and gave relentlessly of his personal time to community service. Anybody know how to reach him on the internet??
