Weigh in on ESPN, Big Grady and ICE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Covering the NFL, Wednesdays and Thursdays are always a delight.
Did a little short segment on ESPN2’s First Take show yesterday. The topic was first-year quarterbacks and first-year coaches and how Atlanta and Baltimore have been able to win this season.
It went pretty good with Jay Crawford (a proud Bowling Green State University Falcon alum). My advisors - my dad Al Led, Kenny the Cameraman at Channel 11 and my brother-in-law Spencer - all told me to loosen up and not be so stiff like I was on my last NFL Network appearance. You’re talking sports, not politics or about some serious legal issue, they all said. So I was much more relaxed and even tried to smile a little. Didn’t rock the trademark bow tie, either.
Then it was off to the Branch were the Worldwide Leader took over the media room. ESPN’s Rachel Nichols - (Nice young lady. She kicked it with Steve Wyche, D. Led and the crew in New Orleans a few years back. D. Led had to say hello!) — was there to do something on Matthew ICE that’s going to run on Sunday’s NFL Countdown show. (Matty Ice sounds too corny to me. I like “Matthew ICE”)
I suspect they’re going for the resurrection of the franchise angle in the post Vick/Petrino era.
ICE is also nominated for one of their goofy awards, ESPN The Magazine’s 2009 NEXT athlete. ICE is a finalist with Joey Logano (NASCAR), David Price (Tampa Bay Rays) and Ricky Rubio (Basketball/Spain). Take ICE and the over for the award.
Big Grady spoke for the first time about being in steroid limbo. Not sure how this is going to turn out, but several members of the local media concur that something is wrong if the league suspends Jackson for steroid abuse.
While no one in the local sports media is medical doctor, they all think it’s rather clear that Big Grady is not on any steroid or other performing enhancement drug. This is an instance where the letter of the law - the league policy that holds players strictly liable for the supplements they take - may dish out and injustice.
So how are you feeling about the Denver game? Who’s going to stop Brandon Marshall? Should the Falcon fans start a petition to the league office on Grady’s behalf? The stuff he was talking - papaya and garlic - was penalty enough? Who nominated ICE for the ESPN Magazine award? The editors trying to sell the publication or you the fans of the ATL?

Orlando,
The Broncos are about to get mauled. They have no running game, and they can’t stop the run. We rush the passer fairly well and have one of the best running offenses in the league. THIS, my FRIEND is a recipe for disaster…
Like last week with Brees, look for Marshall and Cutler to hook up a few times, but it will lead to field goals. Look for the Burner to have a big day, and for our play-action pass to be HUGE!! I’m hoping to see #19 break loose this week and catch a few balls down the field (he did earn his way back on the field with a monster block last week for Norwood).
What is your feel on Brookings vs. #54? Do you think Brookings is having a good year? What about the free safety? Last, is there any word on when Baker MIGHT be back?

…if you are going to blog at least know the proper name - it is Brooking, no S! And, Brooking is still a stiff and past his prime and needs to go the way of Jennings (i.e. - waived)! Brees made mince meat of him in the 4th quarter on every thrid and long - just find who Keith was covering and throw it there because he was sure to be, and was, open!

Got it! Brooking without the “s” and certainly without zone drop coverage skills. Glad you saw it the way I did (but when will the coaches see it?)

Can’t wait for the game Sunday. I think FBD was right about big stats leading to few scores for the Broncos. We should be able to continue our clock-eating formula against them and make big plays when they are needed. Defense is just good enough to keep us in any game and the O is clickin’. I’m saying 31-20 Falcons.
As for Big Grady, hang in there big fella’. He knows he’s in the right or he wouldn’t be pushing so hard to clear his name. (Please hold back your Roger Clemens references b/c I believe Grady)
Finally, Matty Ice deserves AND can handle every bit of praise about to be heaped on him. He’s the next big thing and his head is firmly on his shoulders. Don’t expect any pictures of him smoking a fatty in da club anytime soon. RYAN FOR PRESIDENT 2028! (After 2 or 3 Superbowls and MVP’s of course)

My sons’ name is Matty and he thinks it’s really cool that Ryan’s nickname is Matty Ice, so I like Matty Ice!! It is absolutely ridiculous if they suspend ginormous Grady for Sterioids!! It would be a huge loss, no pun intended, for the Birds. He not only adds bulk but some veteran savvy to this young team. I say protest it! If we can stop Cutler, they don’t have much else. I am so impressed with our secondary, sorry Brent, it looks like you lost your job. Go Finn (my fave Falcon)!!

Grady on Roids???? LMAO You mean the chicken he eats?
The Denver game will be a time clock lesson. How can we control the ball for 50mins, we’ll let them have it for 10mins. It’s going to be a shoot out, but they won’t have enough time to produce points. We’ll probably run a two back offense with Turner and Norwood. If the score really gets up there, I’d like to see Snelling get some carries. He’s tough.
Why is Brooking on the field, is #54 that bad? The guy’s very slow. He’s a good team player in the locker room, but he’s always out of position. I love the guy, but there has to be space on the coaching squad we can put him. Next year draft the kid from Ohio State or that Big Monster from Bama.
Go Falcons

I see the Denver game as the “battle of the first quarter scripts”. Both Coach Shanahan and Mularkey like to script the first dozen or so offensive plays, so it will be interesting to see who gets off to the faster start. In the end, though, I think this game will be decided in the last few minutes. And I can’t help but think it will be a game-winning field goal by either ex-Falcon Prater or ex-Bronco Elam - a ‘script’ fit for NFL Films.
As for Matt Ryan, it’s just hard to fathom he’s a rookie. I can’t think of any player, let alone quarterback, with less than three years of NFL experience I’d take over him.
P.S. I think Albert Haynesworth is going to look very nice in a Falcons uniform next year…

Give it up. Matty Ice. College buddies named him, and we can do no less after Chicago. As his mother’s Tshirt said “GOT ICE?”
My spouse constantly yells “Go Dorsey” whenever MR makes good plays … because I was a fan of drafting him third, proving once and for all I am not up for TD’s job.
Lay off on Brooking. During the first year of transition to the defensive communications device, they wanted a veteran who knew BVG who could adapt quickly. (I thought Smitty was crazy to bring in that wayward coach until Brooking said he is the best.) The entire defense is young other than Brooking and Milloy. He will probably be gone next year and Milloy the following, but for now I have to believe their experience is a benefit to teach the younger players.
I mean, can you really argue with a lot of the decisions this team has made this year?
Go Falcs.

I’m in favor or the nickname “ICEMAN”. The other sounds like a Pee Wee football moniker. Let us keep the Kool-Aid in the fridge for a couple more games. We have to go at least 3 and 3 in our division to have a legitimate shot at playoffs. Other than that I love what the Falcons have accomplished this year. What sport show said we would be 1-15 at best 3-13 this year?

mars, You made me laugh out loud. You should be a comedy writer.
Great discussion, everyone. I agree with the critics about Brooking, however, I also believe Singletary is spot-on with his analysis of the situation. The new management, and especially the coaches, know exactly what they’re doing. Brooking has lost a few steps, granted, but his coaching skills are too valuable on the field to simply bench him. It all goes back to what Smitty has been saying since he arrived: this is a PROCESS…be patient, everyone.

I believe the Falcons get it done Sunday! I do not believe it will be the blow out many expect. I expect us to control the clock and have a solid running attack all game.
The Broncos have a great QB and an explosive offense….they will keep it close but the Falcons win and continue their winning ways! Come on over and “taste” the Kool-Aid Chris, it ain’t half bad!
What about the other 5 or 6 players named in the steroid / band substance / diuretic investigation? Are they all suspended / Under appeal and it is for the same OTC med?
We definitely need BIG Grady, he is a force and a presence to be reckoned with…Surely the NFL can see through this one!

Nice post Singletary. I was mostly in the Dorsey camp before the draft, but sure glad TD doesn’t listen to the media, fans, or even some people in the Falcons organization regarding talent evaluation. If my wife knew who Dorsey is she would be yelling at me also.
Moreover, I don’t know about most of you, but every time I watch the Falcons, I still can’t believe thats our team. I’ve got a buddy who is a Miami fan, and the way we see it, Falcons Dolphins XLIII.
Keeping it real though, if they make the playoffs, I would be thrilled. Playoffs…are we actually talking playoffs!

Why don’t you arm chair coaches quit being so hard on #54. I take it from your comments that you know football inside and out. The key you are missing this year as in the past you don’t understant the importance of having Brooking to tie the defense together for the young folks that are playing their tails off.

Matthew Ice sounds like a lame rapper’s name! How about ‘Mattice’, pronounced like the French artist. Ryan paints his passes to myriad receivers and sculpts our offensive game plan with the control of a seasoned master artist. As for Grady, we should all email the NFL to reconsider their stand on this bogus steroid masking accusation. As for Denver, if our corners play half as well as last week, we should win by more than a TD. I loved watching the hybrid corner/safety Foxworth in the NO game and he should have special incentive against Denver. All of our DB’s played very well. Actually, the whole friggin’ team did. GO FALCONS!

Iceman’s RIO was Slider not Goose. Goose was with Maverick. Now figure out what nickname to use…LOL…
Great season! It’s good to see leadership and teamwork. Players not yelling at one another and a QB that leads and talks to his men. Receivers who catch the ball most of the time. What showed me the most was how Ryan reacted to the missed catch by Roddy White. He didn’t blow up, he smiled and patted him on the helmet. This is leadership and teamwork.
The playoffs aren’t out of the question but they have to beat Tampa and Carolina when they come to town…

Let me just say here that I don’t think there is ANY body in Atlanta as big a Keith Brooking fan as I am. Since I love Georgia Tech and he is an alumni that is one big reason. I also have posters, jersey’s, etc of him… That having been said, while I was watching the Saints game, I was getting frustrated on the 3rd and 4th and longs myself. Granted, like a blogger said previously, Keith should’ve had help from Milloy but I don’t know if it’s just that Brooking is having to get readjusted to being OLB again or if his age is starting to catch up with him? I haven’t seen him intercept a pass in a year and a half although I am willing to give him a “pass” (no pun intended) from last year just b/c the whole organization was in the toilet. I think Brooking has one solid year left in him. He signed a 7 year deal back in 2002 so we have him under contract until 2009 but the Falcons can terminate that whenever they want..haha. They may let him play one more year and then waive him before his final contract year, or possibly trade him. But I don’t see a trade happening b/c of the mainstay he has been in Atlanta. They will most likely allow him to retire a Falcon on his own terms and his own time frame but they could push that issue a little bit if they decide to go with a younger player at that position. Either way, the Falcons are doing great this year. I have told friends that if the Falcons finish anywhere between 6-10 or 8-8, then Mike Smith SHOULD get coach of the year. But heck, with the way we’re playing now, we could finish 10-6. And if things really bounce our way, 11-5!! It could happen!!

Brandon Marshall can get 200 yards receiving as long as we keep him and Royal out of the endzone. It will make no difference except the stat book.
November 23rd is our make-it-or-break it game. We win and I think we take a playoff spot. We lose and we are looking at a 10-6 season watching the Giants, Redskins, Bucs, Cards, Panthers and Vikes in the post season. There is going to be a 10-6 or 11-5 team in the NFC who misses the play-offs. Lets hope its the Bucs or Redskins.
I expect Brooking to retire after this year, especially if we go deep into the play-offs.

Big Grady on steroids…ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha….the only thing he’s shooting up is cookie dough and skittles. Much love to tha big man though. This sounds like one of those genuine cases where it may be in the NFL’s interest to let this one slide. Grady is a force in the middle for the Falcons and the defense would really miss not having him there. As far as, Matty ICE…the man just plays football, loves the game and wants to win. He could probably care less about any award.

So, Matty Ice becomes ICEMAN

Led, Matty Ice in based on a nick name for Natural Ice Beer (Natty Ice)—Natural Light being Natty Light. In college and high school that is how we referred to it. Okay, sometimes Nasty Light if you didn’t like it.
Therefore, it would have to be Mattural Ice, which just sounds stupid. Let him keep the fratboy pledge name: Matty Ice.
Just like Matt, Natty Ice is only good when its cool, so we should never say he has the hot hand or on fire. Warm Natty Ice is like Kirk Kittner. Sorry—too easy.

Matty Ice and Matthew are too Bostonian. ICEMAN is not bad. DOL should start his own contest for a Ryan moniker.
“Goose” sounds like when Turner runs into the lineman when they don’t open up holes.
DOL should start a new, Falcon’s “name for Ryan”, contest.

I’m torn. Iceman would be better, just so we could stick Norwood with Slider and save him from Crazy Legs. But it’s hard to ask a guy to give up a long held nickname. D Led, I expect you to report back with young Mr. Ryan’s opinion on all this nickname business. You started it, so finish it. Set up the AJC poll, call the commissioner, do whatever needs to be done, but don’t let this drag out all season. It could be an unwanted distraction.
As for ESPN and all the other national sports shows, It has been painful to watch as they either ignore the Falcons or constantly harp on the past, or how bad we were, or how we were only beating bad teams. These days, there’s a quiet respect for the Falcons in most circles. NFL Live asked the question whether the AFC East or the NFC East was more likely to get 3 teams into the playoffs and one of the commentators said the Atlanta Falcons and the NFC south was going to have a lot to say about that. We haven’t had this much swagger since the golden days of “he who must not be named”. I can watch pre-game shows again, and be almost sure to see a Falcons highlight. Yet another sign of a franchise back on the rise.
And Big Gravy should be applauded for whatever the hell he has to do to get that much man moving with that much purpose. Man that big should get a pass for damn near anything he does to get on the field. And the lawyer in me says, the rules are ridiculous if you get in trouble even when you can show you used all the due diligence that you possibly could have to stay on the right side of those rules; and in fact aren’t even accused of using performance enhancing substances.

Interesting stat about Ryan’s QB rating against Carolina, Tampa, and Philadelphia. Did anyone else notice that with each game it was getting better? That’s another difference between Vick and Ryan, Ryan keeps getting better and his team keeps getting better; Vick and his team stayed the same.

Hey Ledbetter,
Now that you are an ESPN celebrity, do you think you can refer back to game notes when you write articles? Like when referring to the Falcon’s loss to the Eagles? After the muffed punt the Eagles did not run out the clock, they ran Westbrook 40-somthing yards to a TD, turning a 6-point deficit into a 13-point blow-out. Jennings was not waived because his mistake let the Eagles run out the clock. He let the Eagles rub salt in that wound, while guaranteeing a loss.
Steroid use does not guarantee a career in the Oily Muscle Flexing League. Grady trying that sport would gag most normal human beings out. Steroid use means, with exercise and weight training the muscles exercised bloat like balloons. Steroids make it easier to get a neck like a bull, biceps that need rubber bands around them, and calves like someone wedged an anvil under the skin. Steroids use, when one is not motivated to do a lot of weight training (but motivated to eat), means one looks like Grady, while being strong as an ox. Not a bad thing to be when playing Defensive Nose Guard/Tackle. Just because Grady doesn’t look muscular doesn’t mean he isn’t right along with everyone else doing steroids, and because of that he very well could be taking the banned substance to mask such steroid use. Who knows? How about his appeal being judged by on the spot blood and urine analysis? No steroids in that (assuming he is no longer taking the papaya stuff), then he gets a “get out of suspension free card”.
Maybe someday the NFL will be like the Olympics or the Tour de France, where they make all contestants pee in a cup (in front of an official), and disqualify whoever tests positive for that game or event, or ban them for life for multiple disqualifications. Only then will steroids get out of American sports. But, as long as bull necks equal million dollar salaries, players will lie, cheat, and steal for the golden ring. Meanwhile, us lowlifes just pay the bills for everyone.

Icematt??? No way! Matt Ryan if all things stay the same will probably be rookie of the year, and we going to go with Icematt? Come on Tony C, I know you still aren’t called the same names as when you were in school. All nicknames are lame to some extent, but the boy has turned into a man in the nfl, so we don’t need no contest, the ICEMAN gives credit to his past, and his future. DOL if you read this we need AJC help to let the word out that the ICEMAN cometh.

Don’t like ICEMAN. That’s already taken by George Gervin, the sliky smooth former ABA and NBA hooper.
Boo Boo thanks for pointing out the Westbrook TD run.
Don’t know if Rachel is single. Nice person, though.
Hey Jennings could actually help out the Falcons. Just say he decides to show his inner Devin Hester on punt returns and he takes two back to help defeat Carolina.

Matty Ice will do just fine. VS2, you are a loser for trashing the Falcons. You are a loser for trashing a QB that is doing a wonderful job, and certainly has done nothing to deserve you despite. You are a loser for blaming everyone besides Vick for the sins that Vick himself committed. And finally, you are a loser for being obnoxious.

Condidering the teams success, and how successful our coaches and GM have been in their overall judgement, why don’t you complainers let the coaches judge Brooking’s preformance and/or value. If he’s hurting the DEF, I think they would know better than any of us and wouldn’t hesitate in making a change.
The following info is for anyone making an issue of who the Falcons have beaten and who has beaten us. IF THE FALCONS WIN MORE GMS THAN ANYONE ELSE IN OUR CONFERENCE, WE WILL BE CHAMPIONS OF THE NFC SOUTH AND IT WON’T MATTER WHO WE BEAT OR WHO BEAT US. You’re simply making a fool of yourself by making an issue of something so trival and of so little consequence. A WIN IS A WIN.
VICK SUPPORTER 2-The Panthers have beaten the Bears, Chiefs, Saints and Oakland just like us and will play Detroit Sunday. So how stupid do you have to be to make an issue of the teams we’re playing when your team is playing the same teams.

I hope the Birds dont lay an egg when they play the Broncos on Sunday. If they just stick with their game plan and make Cutler throw the ball sooner than he wants to the Falcons should have a good chance. But they are blowing me away with their outstanding play. Hey just thought it might be worth throwing it out there as some inside info. “Matty Ice” is a nickname Matt Ryan got at BC. Natural light is a beer that college students drink because it is cheap. All Natural beer is referred to as “Natty” both notoriously and affectionately because it tastes cheap if you know what I mean. Natural Ice or “Natty Ice” is the cheapest of the Nattys so thus “Matty Ice” was born because the kid plays with ice in his veins.

What was the cutsie name they called Peyton Manning in his rookie days, when he first took the Colts to a 3-13 record? Was it Peyty Pass or something like that? How about Mike Vick? It’s quite obvious to anyone with an actual IQ that VICK SUPPORTER 2 is an attention seeking Falcon hater that only wants to get a rise out of us Falcon fans. So far, his efforts have proven successful because he seems to be the focus on everyones attention.
The problem is, why aren’t some of you more offended by the blatantly racist comments from a sick piece of meat that calls himself JOEBRAVE? This clown is so filled with FEAR, IGNORANCE and HATRED, the primary ingredients of RACISM, that he views, as well as responds, to everything from that perspective.
It seems he could be either a former KKK member or sympathizer that loves the Falcons and the Braves passionately. However, he can’t come to grips with the realization he’s become a relic of a racist psst, when his racist attitude and behavior were legal, tolerated and encouraged. HE CAN’T SEEM TO MOVE FORWARD, SO HE TRIES TO LOWER EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE TO HIS LEVEL WITH VULGAR, RACIST, VIOLENT, HATE FILLED UTTERANCES.
I’ll bet he beats his dog, wife and children, if he has any, everytime he’s reminded of a Black man being elected president of the United States. Fortunately, his time of dominance and influence in our society has passed and eventually, so will people like him.

Couple things:
1 - Rachel Nichols is not single. She is married to son of the family that owns the Washington Post. I only know because a buddy of mine that I worked with (I am a journalist) went to Northwestern with her. Apparently she was not nearly as attractive back then as she is now
2 - The headline on the back page of the Philly Daily news before the Falcons game was a big picture of Ryan with the Headline “Iceman Cometh” - it was pretty awesome.
Ryan is very easy to root for. Love his focus. It’s his decision making which has been his biggest asset. Also, I don’t think he’s audibled into a bad play yet this season.

Our Atlanta Falcons did it again. They sent shock waves throughout the National Football League by frustrating and soundly defeating the New Orleans Saints last Sunday… In the first and second quarters, the Falcons defense limited the finesse, explosive, and unorthodox offense of the Saints to six points. In the third quarter, the explosive offense didn’t score. And in the fourth quarter, the Saints managed their first touchdown. But with seconds remaining on the game clock, the Saints turned to the Hail Mary Pass. And as expected, the prayer was answered in the Falcons’ end zone resulting in a second touchdown. But it was too little too late. Time expired on the clock. The Falcon’s orthodox, workmanlike, and physical football team had won, 34-20.
After watching the Saints experience vivid frustration in the Georgia Dome, undoubtedly, the Denver Broncos reluctantly departed their homes with ambivalent feelings en-route to Atlanta Georgia. But to their credit, they stayed the course treading every narrow, back and country road from Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, to Tennessee. Finally after another day’s journey, they reached the confines of Atlanta. Falcons’ fans can rest assured that our team is thoroughly prepared to attack, corral, and tame this heard of wild horses when the two intersect.
The Denver Broncos and the New Orleans Saints share similar strengths and weaknesses. Each is finesse, explosive, and unorthodox. Each prefers passing the football versus the run… But Broncos’ quarterback Jay Cutler isn’t as cagey, crafty, or refined as Saints quarterback Drew Brees… Now don’t get it twisted. Don’t infer anything about our quarterback. Matt Ryan is the best quarterback in the NFL. He is capable of passing for four hundred meaningful yards and four touchdowns each Sunday… Nevertheless, look for an almost carbon copy of last Sunday’s game at the Georgia Dome… If the Falcons’ orthodox workmanlike offense and bend but don’t break defense didn’t spare the unorthodox “Saints,” they won’t spare the unorthodox “Broncos” on Sunday.
Now is the opportune time to show my southern hospitality. The Denver Broncos should be allotted time to redirect the foretelling of Sunday’s game. It’s your audience Denver:
“…I hear her voice in the mornin hour she calls me-the radio reminds me of my home far away-drivin down the road I get a feelin that I should have been home yesterday—-yesterday—-. Country roads—-take me home—-to the place—-I belong—-West Virginia—-mountain momma—-Take me home—-country roads—-.
Country roads—-take me home—-to the place—-I belong—-West Virginia—-mountain momma—-Take me home—-country roads—-.
Take me home—-country roads—-Take me home—-country roads—-.”
Falcons win, 31-21.
