Wild week expected in Flowery Branch
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
All was quiet in the F.B. for most of the season.
The Falcons were off to a 4-2 start. Matt Ryan was playing like a seasoned veteran. The veterans were buying into the new regime’s style. The rose petals were smelling good.
But this week promises the first fireworks of the season.
First up, is what’s going to happen to Grady Jackson? Is the big fella going to get suspended for four games? Who’s going to play nose tackle in his potential absence?
Lawyer Milloy is probably going to hear from league office on Thursday or Friday for his hit on L.J. Smith. His pocket, already a little lighter this season after being fined for his DUI episode, might become $25,000 lighter this week. OUCH!
Wonder if referee Jerome Boger, of Conyers and a former quarterback at Morehouse, will have to admit his crew botched the Adam Jennings punt return touch/no touch? Boger and his crew came to the F.B. this summer and provided the media with a session on the rule changes for the season. Seems like a real nice guy. Wonder if they’ll get assigned to the Falcons next training camp.
All this and lest we forget it’s D. HALL week! I’m sure the former Falcon cornerback will have some things to say about his trade to the Raiders and other topics of interests.
But the most pressing issue will be how are the Falcons going to replace Big Grady if he goes down in the water pill/masking agent scandal? Should Milloy, one of the game’s hardest hitters with a stellar reputation, be fined for doing his job? What about D. HALL and the Raiders, can the Falcons take them to improve to 5-3? Should Matt Ryan throw a bunch of balls at Hall and try to catch him slipping?

The one thing the Raiders CAN do is run the ball…here’s hoping the league has enough sense not to suspend Grady for taking something to mask steroids. Surely they see his 60 pound gut swinging around? We need that gut! D. Hall will not be a factor, just like before.

Is it me, or as technology has advanced, and the grading of officials by their respective sports been put at a premium, have we seen more boneheaded calls than ever?! Officiating just seems to get worse and worse, in all sports, however perhaps most notably in football. I truly believe officials are so terrified of making the wrong call and getting thrown under the bus that, under duress, the wrong call is exactly what they make.
That being said, this moment represents the first “crossroads” of the young season. As Schultz opined, it was bound to come, probably sooner rather than later. Whether or not Big Grady gets suspended, I think the Birds will respond admirably - and, most importantly, grab a road win this week in Oakland. I think Smitty learned some important lessons in game management yesterday in Philly that will serve him well in the long-run, and that the team will continue its rise to greatness right on-schedule.

Hopefully, Gravy’s agent was correct and he won’t be facing a suspension. If so, that obviously means more playing time for Moorehead, and I don’t believe we have any DTs on the practice squad, so we might have to pick up some buster who’s at home eating Cheetos right now. Losing Gravy hurts big time, if indeed he is suspended.
Refs make mistakes. That’s why we have replay, and that’s why Coach Smith should’ve kept a TO in his pocket until the warning. Yes, I know that time would have run off the clock. But even so, if you have that TO under 2 minutes, you can stop the clock after an inbounds completion, thus negating the 28 seconds that Mike Smith says he was saving by calling the 3rd TO.
I don’t know about a fine for the Lawyer. He didn’t lead with his helmet, and it was a fast play. Like he said, if the receiver had caught the ball and Lawyer’s judicious sentence of pain had resulted in the ball coming loose, people would be praising him. Nice hit, buddy. This is football.
Roddy against MeAngelo. Roddy has a career day with at least 2 TDs of 40 yards, and MeAngelo gets suspended for b**-slapping Tom Cable after Cable yells at him for getting 2-4 flags in 1 drive.
Now hear this, Adam Jennings: you are dead to me.
Please, Mr. Mularkey, if we have 2nd-and-goal on Oakland’s 1, will you pretty please, with sugar on top (and I’ll even throw in a cherry), hand off to Turner, Snelling or Mughelli? That would be swell.
Matty Ice: 275 passing, 3 TDs, 1 INT (but not to Meangelo)
MeAngelo Hall: 4 penalties, thrown to 20 times, completed 17 times, 2 TD allowed (minimum).

nobody figured the falcons would be 4-3 after 7 games. so the fact that we are sitting there with a great chance to go 5-3 in the first half of the season is remarkable. there are good stories all around and the grady situation is a blemish on an otherwise wonderful first half. milloy did his job and although it was a cheap shot that’s the way it goes. he’ll get fined and everyone will move on.
i’m happy that we completed most of the game sunday. we were obviously overmatched in several areas yet we were in the game till the bitter end. as long as the team learns from what happened and growss from the loss that is all that can be asked. as a medium time season ticket holder (8 yrs) i look forward to the future and am glad that we have a team we can be proud of win, lose or draw!

I don’t think Smith made the wrong call; he shouldn’t have to save a time out between the 57th and 58th minute just in case an official screws up. That’s not what replay is for, nor time outs. They desperately need to adapt the college replay system. The Falcons may or may not have won that game otherwise (I personally think they would have; they had all the momentum and plenty of time) but if it’s gonna go down as an “L” in our column it can at least serve as an example that the system must be improved just like the Raiders and the tuck rule.

Orlando,
We are still waiting for the Keith “Highway 56” Brooking wildness to end. This guy is a liability to our defense. Boley is no better right now either but at least he can run. This should be a big question as well, “what are they going to do with Highway 56?” Adam Jennings ONLY made this team because T. Brown is on IR. It is time to put Jennings on TUL (The Unemployment Line)!

By far the worse play of the game was not running the ball on second and goal from the 2. Even if mini me was covering White i still would have ran the ball. That play and again not getting points in the red zone was a completed game changer. If Atlanta doesnt remove there heads from there A$$ the Oakland game will be embarrassing.

I agree w/the comment made about jennings. He sucks. This is not the first time he’s made errors punt returning, and he’s not even decent when he catches the ball and returns it. Technically it wasn’t his error but his indecision, gave the ref’s a chance to blow the call. I’m sure we have someone on the team that can do a better job, or at the least sign someone.. They can’t be any worse.

I know this is not the topic today, but our running game is terrible right now because Michael Turner tiptoes to the line looking for cutback lanes. Cutback lanes are created when you press the hole playside and allow the defense to over run the play. Will they please tell Mr. Turner to stay playside and take the 3 to 4 yards that are usually there. Cutback lanes will eventually come. And by the way he is really not that fast.
Take 56 out on third down.
If we stop the run, the Raiders lose.

Hey Y’all:
This was a game that was taken from us but we cannot dwell on this. We can not dwell on this at all. Let’s got to the next game armed and dangerous with what we have so far learned in our wins and losses. Every game this season we have played nitty, gritty, nasty football on the ofensive and defensive side of the ball. The procees this team is going through to be established winners this season, not the next, is fun to watch. The Eagles know they got by with the skin on the teeth. But those are the breaks. We will see them in the playoffs, hopefully. However, what the Eagles found out was that Matt Ryan and the Falcons were not fazzled by their blitzes. The Falcons adjusted and they excelled. Especially, near the end of the game. The eagles were the one’s running until that “damn bad call”. But what I saw was the Falcons still playing with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!” We will continue playing that way and enjoying the process of our young Falcons becoming a mature smash mouth football team. The wait is “NOW!”
Now the Grady incident is somewhat problematic due to is has put a minor blotch what the Falcons are accomplishing as a team. However, I believe this will work itself out for the betterment of the team and the younger players. All the Falcons can learn fro this, including Big Grady. I know he will come back to the team as nasty as ever. Nevertheless, I believe his loss will not hurt the defense that much due Grady was playing some minimal but valuable spot duty on the defensive line. I am confident that the falcons will come up with a good rotation to fill Grady’s role and win. I say this because the coaches and the team play with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!”. That is how we play. That is what we do. We play as a football community: owners, coaches, players, and fans. WE PLAY WITH “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!” The Raiders will feel our rath in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!”
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN. TELL EVERBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO FALCONS

Each week we’re seeing how the Falcons respond to being hit in the mouth, and usually they have responded well. I expect no less this week against Oakland.
For starters, McFadden may not play, and JaMarcus Russell is turnover prone at this point. I expect Turner to burn right through their D-line, opening up for our Savior Matt Ryan to deliver some well timed passes to White and Douglas.
My only concern is that Roddy White won’t get caught up in Hall’s smack-talking and lose his concentration on the game.
Here’s something to think about: based on that Mike Singletary press conference, anyone still wished he was coaching the Falcons?

Still trying to figure out how Westbrook got so FREE for 169 yards. It wasn’t like the Falcons didn’t know he’d be getting the ball. I seems like Andy Reid gets him the ball 8 out of 10 times. I’ll ask Coach Smith at 4:20 p.m. why they didn’t key on Westbrook. Hopefully, they didn’t key on him. If they did key on him and he still got his 169 rushing and 42 receiving, then that would be very troubling.

DOL, we made Brian Westbrook look like a Barry Sanders/Marshall Faulk hybrid. In his first game back from injury, when the Falcons had to have known that he would be an integral part of Philly’s game plan, how in the wide, wide world of sports do you allow the man to shred you the way he did? Unbelievable.
DOL, can you also ask Coach Smith his take on the Falcons’ poor tackling yesterday? On several occasions, we allowed the Eagles to gain significant yardage after contact. Our D looked like a river of molasses. And how do you allow McNabb to escape danger every time you have pressure on him in the pocket? It’s like the Falcons forgot that you actually have to tackle the QB once you get to him.
Overall lackluster (at best) performance yesterday. Yes, there was a blown call. But things happen in football, and it should not have come down to a situation where that call loomed as large as it did. The Birds didn’t deserve to win yesterday.
I take solace in the belief that our QB is currently pouring over footage from yesterday’s debacle and of Oakland’s D. This Ryan kid is smart and tough, and he won’t just shrug off the mistakes he made yesterday. He’ll use them as a learning tool, and he’ll be a better QB for having gone through games like that. Peter King said in today’s Monday Morning QB, “Every game Matt Ryan has to struggle and get bloodied and knocked down and go through adversity is another game closer to making him a top-10 quarterback in the league.” He also had this to say about the Matty Ice: “The legend of Matt Ryan grows. How’d he thread the needle past Asante Samuel for that 55-yard TD throw to Roddy White?”
Let’s get out of Oakland with a W and hit the halfway point at 5-3. Amazing what good coaching, discipline, an attitude change and playing together can accomplish, is it not?

Philly should be able to win most of their home games; they’re that good and the “home team” advantage is that strong in that market; if, big if, they get by Oakland; 5—3; 2nd 1/2 of the season: 5 home and 3 away games; again, take home games from division foes, split with the other 2 home games and take one of three away games, we’re looking @ 10 wins; that would be a season to remember;

D Hall will be flapping his jaws that is for sure as the sun will rise tomorrow! Who cares, he’s a windbag, anyway. I’m sure he’ll be primed for this game, too. But even if we lose Grady, we still should win! Jamarcus Russell is awful, we have to step up & win this on the road. I think we’ll get the run game cranked up but we have to evolve the passing game! Sometimes it doesn’t look like Ryan has practiced with any receiver but Roddy who has trouble shedding corner’s sometimes! I’m sure Ryan will learn from his mistakes, he’s not stupid. When’s Jennings going to be cut? Let Jerious handle it. As for Lawyer, I think he should be fine. Stupid move, bad example for the younger players. That is 15 yards we couldn’t afford to lose! I know it’s frustration talking but he’s got to be better than that & should be. Let’s work on some screen plays this week, we don’t run those very well at all & we need to.

I am proud of the Falcons even in the loss to the Eagles. They played well in front of a hostile crowd and was in it until the now famous “muffed punt call”. Just one thing caught my eye that really upset me … I came to realize all the Brooking bashing is deserved! Every play that came his way, was a success … he never stopped anything all game, just chased and jumped in IF someone else did make a stop! And I was always a Brooking supporter … age has taken its toll on a one-time good linebacker. Time to hang it up man. You had a good career but now you are hurting the defense!

WOW!! Never a dull moment when Vick Supporter 2 is around. Always some idiotic comment about his sugga daddy gettin his salad tossed in prison. On another note, as Tron5000 quoted earlier, with each loss we get is a chance for Matt to improve. He got some good looks at different blitzes and defenseive looks, so he should improve. I still like Coach Smith, maybe not the (DC)and the (OC), but whether you agree with him using all the timeouts or not part of being a Falcons fan is supporting your players and coaches even when they mess up, with the exception of Adam Jennings. That was just plain stupid. Dude, you gots to GO!!!

Yesterday’s game was a heartbreaker in the respect that we’ll never know whether The falcon’s would have scored a TD with the time left after the officiating crew’s botched call. While players are being fined for vicious hits on other players, some sort of suspensions and or fines should levied against officials who make calls that are critical to the outcome or possible outcome of a game. The linebacker play has been horid and the missed tackles are becoming more and more frequent. If the defense plays the way it is capable of playing an outside chance of the playoffs is not out the question.

According to ESPN, it will be a month before the water pill suspensions will come down. Grady Jackson will make the trip to Oakland.
KC beat Oakland soundly by running the football. The Falcons need to make Meangelo have to tackle Turner, if Hall really wants to make any plays to back up his lip. If the Falcon running game cannot work against the Raiders, then it will be a long day. The Faclons have a history of giving up 50 points on the West Coast. The Fox crew has made a point of talking about Seattle’s problem coming East. The Falcons needed to get away from the Western Conference because of that travel lag. This group of Falcon players better be ready to play their best on Sunday.
Matt Ryan has thrown five interceptions. The first two led to 10 points for the opponent (TB), because he threw them at the beginning of a series, with the Falcons around their own 20. The last two have been inside the opponent’s 20 (GB & Phil), taking away at least 10 points the Falcons could have used. I wouldn’t go throwing at Hall. He has some mojo for interceptions.

I think the Falcons will win rather easily Sunday as long as there are no ill effects from the trip over there. I feel like it will be a big day for the running and passing game, not to mention the defense.
That said, I do love it that now people are talking about how we need JAMAAL ANDERSON out there at defensive end, right after everyone was calling for his head. I am glad to see him finally turning the corner and I hope he can come back from that concussion. Go Falcons!!

I dont know about how yall feel but from watching every game I think it goes without question that Keith Brooking doesnt have it anymore. I know he is here for veteran leadership but he is a major liabilty on the field. He gets taken out of the run gave by the o-tackles and he definitely cant cover anyone. Sunday he got beat by a fullback. This year was supposed to be his year since he goes back to OLB. Now that Grady might be suspended, he’s probably goin get beasted by the o-line. The eagles constintly picked on him.

Let me guess. If we still had Mike Vick at qb and the rest of the team remained unchanged the Falcons would destroy the Raiders 63 - 7 right? Of course the 7 points coming off a kickoff return because a lapse in coverage by Adam Jennings playing the gunner. An MV7 would go 32 for 33 for 398 yds with 5 tds passing and 150 yds rushing with 4tds. The one incomplete coming from a dropped ball from Roddy White.

If the Falcons go into Oakland and think they are gonna win hands down like some of you think, then they will get their butts kicked. Bad teams play well at home. D-Hall will have at least one INT. in this game. Matt Ryan will under throw one and D-Hall will pick it off. He gambles on pass plays anyway. He will be waiting for a pass to come up short. Turnovers will be the key in this game. Look for Norwood and Turner to have good games, Oakland is terrible against the run. But we have to protect the ball. Matt Ryan cannot throw costly INTs. in the redzone on the road it will burn the Falcons everytime. The Falcons are not good enough to overcome turnovers against anyone especially on the road.
