Philly Blitz Master praises Ryan

Got to always check out the other team’s newspapers to see what they are saying about the Falcons. It’s part of the background that goes along with preparing for what might happen on Sunday.

Ray Parillo of The Philadelphia Inquirer has a pretty interesting article today with Eagles defensive coordinator Jim “the Blitz Master” Johnson. (Don’t know how to put the link in here for you but you can go to Philly.Com, bounce around and find it).

Johnson was the linebackers coach in Seattle during Peyton Manning’s rookie year. After studying Ryan for Sunday’s game, Johnson concludes that Ryan is ahead of where Manning was at this stage of his rookie season.

I’d been writing that Manning was 3-13 as a rookie and Ryan is already 4-2. Manning, who wasn’t devoid of weapons as he had Marshall Faulk, was 1-5 after his first six games. It’s interesting that Johnson and went that extra step in the comparison.

Since becoming the Eagles defensive coordinator, Johnson is 8-3 while confusing rookie quarterbacks. Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger (2004), Tampa Bay’s Bruce Gradkowski (2006) and Tennessee’s Vince Young (2006) have posted wins over Johnson’s defenses. The list of victims include Cade McNown, David Carr, Patrick Ramsey, Chad Hutchinson, Eli Manning, Ryan Fitzpatrick, John Beck and Trent Edwards.

The Eagles note that like when Roethlisberger was a rookie quarterback with the Steelers, Ryan has been helped immensely by Michael Turner and the Falcons’ running game, which ranks second in the league.

Is it asking too much of Ryan to handle the Eagles’ blitz scheme in just his seventh game? Does Michael Turner and the offensive line need a strong running game to help Ryan? When teams blitz they are exposing themselves to quick passes. Can Roddy White beat Asante Samuel on some quick stuff? Can the Falcons really climb to 5-2?

My concern is the strength of the line. If they hold and provide running gaps, Falcs can compete.

If the coaches refuse to do anything other than Burner up the middle like the Tampa game, we will lose.

Let me be the first to tell you? The falcons will beat Philly!!!!! Roddy White is the truth he will have a good day, but Laurent Robinson and Harry Douglass will have big days.Philly has no pass rush so they have to blitz, our line is good enough to hold up.I really beleive with the week off our running game will get turned on again and will take us over the top. Matt Ryan is at home so no pressure there, this kid is the truth. I am the number one mike vick fan but now I am saying mike who.Still love ya vick, but matt is the truth and has the support of the city.Last but not least, Van Gordor Please, Please Blitz this game, philly has no great recievers, but if we let mcnabb set in that pocket that man will kill us. LETS GO FALCONS GET EM.

Very tough game. We can win, but I think we will lose - just too much to ask to win on the road against Philly. I just want us to be competitive. Ryan will have to play out his mind, and our secondary will need to step it up. A loss here is nothing to get too excited about. If we win, the sky is the limit for the rest of the season.

Hey Y’all:

The continued teamwork that the Falcons are displaying is key to a win this weekend with the Eagles and every weekend thereafter. They have to continue playing alert, nasty, physical football. Communication and adjustment will be paramount in attacking the Eagles blitzes on defense and dismantling the Eagles offense when they have the have the ball. I am confident the coaches are prepared with their schemes to defeat these “birds”. And as usual this game will be enjoyable to watch. It will be enjoyable dye to we will see Ryan and his receiving corp turn out the Eagles secondary. The running game also will be stout and nasty. All of this will occur because the Falcons offensive line,”The Moving Company”, will stabilize and control the Eagles defensive line and schemes. The Falcons defense, on the otherhand, will excell with their own blitz pacakages against Mc Nabb. Therefore, let’s take the gloves off for this game and “PLAY SOME FOOTBALL”: SOUTHERN STYLE. We will play together with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!” ONe game at at time.

The Falcons can win this one.

Philly’s weakness is the run. The Falcons’ one-two punch with Turner and Norwood will loosen up the Eagles defense. This will give Atlanta ball control and keep McNabb and Westbrook off the field. It might even allow the play action deep ball.

If Atlanta’s red zone offense actually scored more touchdowns than field goals, I would say the Falcons win this one in a land slide. Instead, it’ll be close,

Atlanta - 30 Philly - 27

Stop Brian Westbrook. McNabb is most dangerous not when he is throwing 40 yard bombs - but when he dumps the ball off and gets 6 yards per pass out of Westbrook.

We have to keep him under 100 total yards receiving/rushing.

by the way that ryan has played, no it would not be asking too much for ryan to handle the eagles blitzes. he has shown that win teams make him throw the ball that he can do it. what needs to happen is start off the game with a few slant passes then maybe even a long ball…this would be the perfect game for mularkey to break out some gaget plays….

hate to put it this way but, we can lose this one, and then if we can beat Oakland; 5—3 @ halfway mark; I’ll take that all day long; if we can split with the division that takes us to 8 wins; if we can split the other 4 games that takes us to 10 wins; who knows but this is an interesting team that should give us a decent run over the next couple of years;

Matt Ryan is the future of this franchise and its time for everyone to get on board and support the falcons and there success. None of us expected 4 wins this season with it being a rebuilding time for the franchise. Leave the past in the past and finally enjoy a season of Falcons Football!!!!!

Vick’s record in Philly: 0-3. Now since that little part has been taken care of:

Quick passes from Ryan to White and Douglas will be paramount since the Eagles have a ball-hawking secondary. It will disrupt the blitz and maybe open holes up for Turner.

However I’m more concerned about how Philly’s offense is going to attack the Atlanta defense. McNabb will be anxious to come off the bye week a winner and I expect he’s going to challenge the Falcons’ young secondary deep in the beginning. If they’re not careful Desean Jackson will get in the open field on slant routes.

If Atlanta keeps it basic on offense and doesn’t break too much on defense they should stay in this game.

I’d be willing to bet that Coach Smith and staff have spent 20 hours a day for the past 2 weeks trying to figure out how to turn field goals into TD’s. Trouble is, this week they have to do that against a defensive juggernaut. Win this game and catapult yourselves into the top 10 of most NFL team rankings. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

The key will be for somebody/anybody other than Abe to get pressure on the QB and in the red Zone be more creative. Hand it to Ovie. Has he had a red zone carry this year? Throw it to Ovie, or better yet, let Norwood throw it. You got to put a question mark in the opposing defense’s head. Turner up the middle hasn’t been any better than Dunn up the middle when the other team knows that’s all ya got.

Hey, D. Orlando - good research, but you should have kept on on the www.philly.com site to the article by Ashley Fox, entitled “Matt Ryan’s Rapid Rise”. Great article! By the way, the comparison should not be to Peyton “Happy Feet” Manning, but to Tom Brady. I will grant Manning his one Super Bowl ring and that he’s a nice guy. Tom Brady has 3 rings, and came within a whisker of a 4th, because he never makes mistakes. I hope Ryan can continue in the same mistake-free mode for his career. The results will take care of themselves. GO FALCONS!

I think the Falcons should incorporate more screen passes. Maybe some insde shuttle passes on the blitz. I think Ryan has the potential to be a great QB and I think he realizes that he is in the pefect situation to become a superstar. He seems to carry himself like a college accountant and not like a college jock. I wouldn’t get caught up in the comparisons as Matt schaub was penneed in by everyone to be the next Favre/Brady. Manning may have had Faulk but who was the OC and how was his O-line and D and so on and so on. If I had to make any comparison it more than likely be like Ben Roth in Steeltown. Heavy on the run and manage the game which he has done. I am very impressed so far especially since I was upset that they did not take a defensive impact player. This is one of the few times I think the “Experts” got it right.

ORLANDO LEDBETTER-you’re wasting your time, but all of us appreciate the effort you made in addressing those RACIST MORONS that perpetually dwell in the MVick past. Maybe you should try and intoduce these clowns to fantasy football, which seems to be there focus.

JOE WHITE-I made the same prediction last week and got jumped on by 2 or 3 Falcon hating idiots. Our OFF gave Chicago’s DEF as much as they could handle. If we have done a better job in the redzone, the game wouldn’t have been close. Philly does a lot of blitzing because their DL isn’t good enough to generate an effective pass rush without help. Our DL has had the same problems, but they’re steadily improving.

Philly knows that stopping, or controlling, our rushing OFF is a must if they intend to win. Our passing OFF has to be able to get us into the endzone, not just with field goal range. Before we we played the Packers and the Bears, our passing OFF was ineffective without an effective rushing OFF to set it up. The Falcons took their OFF to the next level against the Packers and Bears by showing the ability to overcome the lack of an effective rushing attack. This will be our 2nd straight gm against a quality team with a good DEF and an effective passing OFF.

I THINK THIS GAME WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE OF OUR DEF AND SPECIAL TEAMS.

(1)We have to pressure McNabb into making quick reads and quick passes and limit the big plays.

(2)We need to keep them out of the endzone, especially with long pass plays.

(3)We must control BWestbrook.

(4)We used very effective special teams play to defeat Chicago. We might need the same type of effort against Philly.

I am a huge Matt Ryan fan now that I have gotten over the Vick saga, but we have to run the ball to give Matt a chance to be successful. For BillCanoe, Manning is the best comparison for Ryan because of where they were drafted No. 1 and No. 3. Brady caught the whole league off guard. With Manning and Ryan, at least a few teams thought they would be franchise QBs.

Everyone whiffed on Brady. Probably because of those ugly Michigan helmets.

Turner going up-the-middle for a yard or two won’t cut it. The Offensive Line and coaches need to create openings for him and Norwood, to make the passing game work. Also, I wish the team Docs would put some extra padding in Baker’s helmet, like the VaTech QB: concussion effects last a long time. Should be a good game.

NFL.COM WRITES

Last meeting A.J. Feeley threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles past the Falcons, 24-17, in Week 17 of the 2006 season.

Streaks The Eagles have won three of the past four contests to seize a narrow 12-10-1 overall series advantage. Check out the historical matchup of the last five games.

Last week Both teams were on a bye.

Keep your eye on … The Eagles return to health: The bye week allowed Philadelphia RB Brian Westbrook and WR Kevin Curtis to recover from injuries and both are expected to be in the lineup this Sunday. With those two healthy, the Eagles offense becomes significantly more explosive.

Reid’s post-bye week success: The Eagles are a perfect 9-0 under coach Andy Reid when coming off a bye week. Atlanta’s Mike Smith has never been in this position before as a rookie coach and how he game plans for a rejuvenated Eagles team could be a key for the Falcons.

Ryan’s maturity: Falcons QB Matt Ryan has shown an ability to come through in pressure situations and appears to be the rare rookie signal caller who can be successful right away. He will be tested, though, by an Eagles defense that likes disguising coverages and using multiple blitz packages.

Did you know? Falcons K Jason Elam has made 38 50-plus yard field goals, putting him in second place all time. … Atlanta DE Jamaal Anderson had his first career sack in his last outing. … Donovan McNabb has never lost to the Falcons (3-0). … Eagles WR DeSean Jackson leads all rookies with 433 receiving yards.

If the running game holds up and they let Ryan throw the ball on first down and not just 3rd down they will be alright. The other receivers has to be ready to play because if they they have Roddy White locked down they have to step up.

Philly’s gonna be injury free for the first time all season and definitely fired up at home. That said, we still have a chance to win this with the proper game plan and level of resolve. That’s what’s made this a 4-2 team instead of a 2-4 team so far, IMO; they remain calm and resolved under pressure. If they can do that in Philly and weather the crowd, they’ll be ok. The Eagles are good, but they’re on the downside of that core nucleus and there’s some doubt creeping in. We can exploit this.

ESPN REPORTS

“It’s realistic, but we’ve also got to understand the road from here on out is going to be tougher,” Turner said. “We’re not going to be sneaking up on anybody. People are going to take us seriously now.”

While Philadelphia’s fans may be somewhat preoccupied with Game 4 of the World Series taking place across the parking lot from Lincoln Financial Field Sunday night, the Eagles will certainly be taking their game seriously, especially considering they’re already chasing three teams in their division.

Philadelphia is hoping to avoid missing the playoffs for the third time in four seasons, but it has been an up-and-down year for coach Andy Reid’s team. While the Eagles average nearly 28 points per game — fourth in the NFL — the offense was quiet in the second half in consecutive tight losses to Chicago and Washington on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5.

The unit rebounded in the team’s last game, even with versatile running back Brian Westbrook sidelined with broken ribs for the 40-26 win at San Francisco on Oct. 12. Backup running back Correll Buckhalter totaled 178 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown, while the Eagles outscored the 49ers 23-0 in the fourth quarter.

“This was a significant game in general for us,” Reid said. “It’s important we establish more consistency and eliminate some of the highs and lows.”

Coming off a bye week might help — the Eagles are 9-0 following a bye under Reid. They also should be aided by a healthier roster, as both Westbrook and wide receiver Kevin Curtis, who hasn’t played this season due to sports hernia surgery, hope to return Sunday.

Philadelphia hopes its tenacious pass rush is also on display. The Eagles are tied for second in the NFL with 21 sacks, including 14 in three home games, and defensive coordinator Jim Johnson doesn’t figure to hold anything back against Ryan.

“We’re not going to stop,” safety Brian Dawkins said. “You may get us every once in a while, but we’re not going to stop, so you have to be able to maintain that same cool that you were on that one play that you got us on the other 20 blitzes that we throw at you.”

Ryan, who has a 59.2 passer rating on the road compared with a 121.9 mark at home, has been sacked just seven times this season, including twice in the last four games.

Atlanta’s line may have to put forth a similar effort if the Falcons hope to earn their first win at Philadelphia since Oct. 30, 1988, when they captured a 27-24 victory at Veterans Stadium. They’ve dropped all four visits since then, including a 20-6 divisional playoff loss after the 2002 season and a 27-10 defeat in the NFC title game on Jan. 23, 2005.

The Dirty Birds beat Peyton and Marshall Faulk in 1998 at the GA Dome after Peyton threw two bombs for a quick 14 point lead. Tuggle, Smith, Archambeau, Hall and Dronett etc. stifled Faulk after that and Chandler and Jamal broke it open.
At the Vet, we got a BS call when 7 got leveled by Dawkins in the endzone during the playoffs on a hold that had nothing to do with the play. And on the worst field in sports at the Vet. Remember those turf seams that screwed everyone. The Birds beat Philly on opening Monday Night 2004 or 05 when Madden projected both teams as the best in the NFC.
It can be done. McNabb was embarassed two weeks ago and Westbrook is sore. Fall on him Grady. A lot.

My new team is the closest we’ve come to what I feel is a real TEAM. The D and the Offense support each other and all the guys on the TEAM seem to really like each other… What does this have to do with the Eagles? Nothing..I just think win or lose they will be a better team. However going against a great team is good way to measure where you are..I do know this, We are way, way way ahead of where Anybody thought we would be. Eagles better be careful…Just leave us 11 seconds…..

Hopefully, the FALCONS players won’t be shot at with pellet guns by the IGGLES faithful, as at least one player was at VETERANS (RIP) STADIUM. MUST WIN for the EAGLES. Bye week, at home, the EAGLES will be hard to match in intensity. Rookie MLB, D-Backs new to the team and adjusting, no monster DT to put the heat on McNABB = loss for ATLANTA this time. Only the offense and the dynamic duo of TURNER and RYAN can get the A-birds into flight. The O-line is looking at their biggest test of ‘08.

Again regular readers refrain from ANY Vick posts.

DLed referenced this article from the Delaware County Time: PHILADELPHIA – The way Jim Johnson told the story Thursday, Falcons rookie quarterback Matt Ryan is no Peyton Manning.

Ryan at this point of his career is better than Manning.

No disrespect to Manning, a certain Hall-of-Fame inductee. It’s just that Eagles defensive coordinator Johnson hasn’t seen a rookie quarterback take control like Ryan, the product of Penn Charter High and Exton who has taken every snap in a 4-2 season. And Johnson is certain of this having watched miles of tape of each.

“I remember going up against Peyton Manning when I was in Seattle,” Johnson said. “You could tell Peyton was going to be good. I don’t think he had the year this guy is having right now. This guy is winning football games. Peyton was good, but this guy here is as advanced as I’ve seen as far as a rookie that I’ve been associated with.”

When Manning stepped in as a rookie in 1998, the Colts started the season 1-5 and finished 3-13. He threw six touchdown passes and 14 interceptions in the first six games and 26 TDs and 28 picks when it was all said and done.

Ryan has thrown five touchdown passes and three interceptions, which projects to 19 TDs and eight interceptions over a 16-game season.

The Eagles (3-3), with two wins over teams whose head coaches have been dismissed, might want to face Manning instead of Ryan this Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Struggling with a knee injury, Manning has eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions, three returned for scores for the Colts (3-3).

Instead, they’ve got Ryan (6-4, 220), the 3G version of Manning.

“He’s pretty good,” linebacker Omar Gaither said. “He’s a rookie, but really it’s more like this is just his first year — if that makes any sense.”

Ryan gets a big assist from a solid running game anchored by Michael Turner (5-10, 244), who ranks second in the NFL with 597 rushing yards and Jerious Norwood (5-11, 202), who averages a staggering 6.8 yards per rush and whose 280 rushing yards would lead the Eagles.

“I’m not going to say he hasn’t been tested,” cornerback Sheldon Brown said. “But when you’ve got a running game it’s a lot easier to play quarterback. A lot of quarterbacks, especially the ones drafted in the first round, go to teams that don’t have running games. When you’re forced to throw the ball 30 or 40 times a game, that’s tough. I think he’s had his share of third-and-shorts. I don’t know if there are games where they’ve been so far out of it they’ve had to play catch-up.”

Tackling Turner and Norwood is an adventure. Players say it’s obvious from film review that hitting them is very uncomfortable. Defenders duck and seem to close their eyes trying to stop the duo.

“If you look at the stats they break tackles,” Johnson said. “Their yards after being hit is (near) the top of the league. Turner is like second in the league after getting hit, as far as breaking tackles. You hardly see teams in the league having two backs breaking tackles like these guys.”

The Falcons’ offensive line with coaches Paul Boudreau and Glenolden and Interboro High product Paul Dunn, has given up just seven sacks.

Ryan, who averages 26 pass attempts per game, has been effective avoiding the blitzes.

With Johnson scheming, the Eagles are 8-3 against rookie quarterbacks, a statistic Ryan is well aware of.

“He’s a great defensive coordinator and has been for a lot of years,” Ryan said on a conference call. “He has a lot of different looks to throw at you on defense.”

The rookie stat also is something Johnson is leery of.

“I can hardly remember some of the rookie quarterbacks we’ve gone against,” Johnson said. “I just think about attacking their offensive team, knowing that we are going to try to do certain things against a young quarterback, like we do a lot of quarterbacks who don’t have experience. But (Ryan) is playing like a veteran right now. You would like to have this guy the first game of the year. He was a lot different quarterback than he is now.”

During week seven of the National Football League, Head Coach Mike Smith decided to evaluate the football team. The evaluation included the entire coaching staff. Let me be one of the first to report that the evaluations are completed. Adjustments have been made. And the Atlanta Falcons have taken flight toward their next prey, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Falcons’ strategy for week eight is to take a circuitous route to victory. Even I was surprised when without warning, in spirit, they veered North West into the state of Missouri. And they continued that flight path completing a number of low passes over Kansas City.

In the kingdom of birds, Falcons are widely known for the gift of speed and unbelievable changes of direction in flight. Peregrine Falcons can soar over two hundred miles per-hour. These are undoubtedly the fastest animals on planet earth. The maximum speed of a bald eagle is forty-five miles per hour. And as we speak, our Atlanta Falcons glided north east to the state of Illinois. They decreased in altitude for a matter of seconds over Chicago.

The Birds turned north to the state of Wisconsin exorcising due diligence over Green Bay. And staying true to form, they changed directions in an instance and glided south east. Lake Michigan appeared beneath them as they stayed the course to the city of Detroit. To the untrained eye, something out of the ordinary seems to have taken place. Compared to the previous states and cities visited, the Falcons are spending an inordinate amount of time over Detroit. But it’s obvious to the trained eye. Detroit is being used as a staging area. And the Atlanta Falcons have selected an opportune time to blitzkrieg the state of Pennsylvania. The Atlanta Falcons have been appointed an opportune time to pick the Philadelphia Eagles apart as if they were Philadelphia Sparrows. Atlanta wins, 31-21.

Go Falcons go!

Philly will go all out to force the Falcons into 3rd and long. If the Falcons are consistently in 2nd or 3nd and short, Philly’s ability to blitz will be limited. Play action on 2nd or 3rd and short would put tremendous pressure on their front 7, especially their LB’s.

This will not be an easy gm for Philly. The Falcons OFF will create just as many problems for their DEF, if not more, as their OFF will create for our DEF. Our DEF will basically have to focus on stopping Westbrook out of their backfield. However, their DEF will have to focus on stopping RB MTurner and JNorwood, not to mention JSnelling.

I LIKE THE FALCONS CHANCES.

Or, you can write it all down and then later type it in your papers, because when you put www in front of it, it makes it turn into a link. Things to worry about if you are a Falcon: Pass defense being so weak. Facing a great, veteran QB.

Eagles strong running game.

Things to worry about if you’re an Eagle: Explosive kickoff returns. Facing a great, veteran rookie QB. Falcons strong running game. Blitz? That means single coverage.

Hang back? Here comes the run.

Let’s root for this team to do what no other team has done in a decade, beat the Eagles. It seems the folks can’t read or don’t know history. We forget that having a winning record is the first priority, and making it to the playoffs is the ultimate. Like many have said in other blogs, the Falcons pass defense is their Achilles’s heal. They got in trouble last week because they couldn’t stop the passing game in the 4th quarter. Let’s hope they don’t play prevent defense again, which seems to be the easiest way to lose.

This Gets Old: I like your passion but your math is suspect. You state, “Ryan has thrown five touchdown passes and three interceptions, which projects to 19 TDs and eight interceptions over a 16-game season.” It’s actually 13.3 TDs and almost 8 Ints. And not too sure defenders seem to duck and close their eyes when tackling Jerious ‘chicken legs’ Norwood. They just miss him on his first move on a semi-regular basis. GO FALCONS!

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=As0C55i893e39V9af4foi69DubYF?slug=ms-thegameface102408&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

If you apply that kind of theory to the Falcons situation:

Last year the Falcons had a tyrant/quitter/defector/incompetant coach in Petrino. Quite a few of the players tried to speak out against the situation and were efeectively branded bad apples (Vick, Crumpler, Hall). These guys had been leaders on the team. they were the best players, they spoke out. OK; Vick let character flaws move him to the activity of dog fighting and Hall had the incidents, but with Hall, it’s possible to say that he was cracking under the pressure of a bad situation; bad leadership and rules to protect hierchy.

You have to admit that this is at least a plausible perspective.

Those three players that had been the toast of the Falcons, were let go. There was a house-cleaning. Management even spread the word, yes, we want good character guys. Well, we know what that means.

Crumpler does not belong in that list. He was a model player the entire time he was here, and Vick’s only passing attack target. Hall was a loser. He started fast then got too full of himself. Who knows what got into Vick, but he had issues before Petrino came around. The team was losing with Vick on the field and Petrino was just a person who happened to be around. Losing began before Petrino got here. We want character guys means we want guys who do not surprise you with their self induced issues that cost you games and seasons. That applies to Hall and Vick but not Crumpler.

I like this Falcons team. They don’t quit and they keep on fighting. We could sit around and analyze every person at every position throughout the nfl and find ways to blame guys for losing. We lose this game, we learn a lesson and we are still a winning team with the same record as the Eagles. We have a chance to beat Tampa and Carolina the next time around because we know how not. The wins against the Packers and Bears were not flukes at all. T-Town Dawg is right. Guys who complain about a team with a winning record and competitive spirit aren’t fans and that is all there is to that. Fine, so join another team fan club and go blog somewhere else. We don’t need you here. And its the same people every time. A fan of every team we play is nothing more than an enemy. Talk that smack at the dome. Security won’t get to you in time, I promise.

some of you guys really need to get a life……I was one that hated to see Vick’s downfall, and I was one of his biggest fans, but I like our present team with Ryan now…..he is developing very well, and Ithink that he will only get better. Vick did some incredible things while he was here, but unfortunately that chapter is over, and now it is Matt’s turn, so lets all support him and root for these falcons.

Stendec and Atheletic Supporter 2,

You guys are so hilarious. You are either drunk or stupid…likely both.

Ryan has not had his best day. However, a lot of young QB’s didn’t when they played this blitzing defense. Actually, Ryan’s game might have been better if our O Line didn’t look so bad today.

That penalty on Milloy was bogus. When he hit the receiver, the ball had been deflected and was still in play. It was not a helmet to helmet hit…Milloy used his shoulder. There was nothing dirty about it. The announcers are total idiots.

Philly has had a good game. Westbrook really helped this team today. What can you say about the Philly defense? They have looked like a superbowl team against our O line. They are good…we just make them look so much better.

The game is not over, but man…we need to be running the no huddle.

Stendec,

Didn’t mean to lump you with Athletic Supporter 2. I was distracted and mistook you to be like that other idiot. Sorry about that.

I’ll tell you…we need a couple of receivers to go with Roddy White. We also need another OT and DT…another linebacker and a couple of DB’s. THink we can pick all of that up this year? Does anyone know how many draft picks we have this year?

By Real Falcon fan

October 26, 2008 4:07 PM | Link to this

So much for the redzone choke. Ryan throws an 8 yard pass in the redzone for a touchdown. How many touchdowns has McNabb thrown in this game again? I’m sure the azz clown will say it is all Roddy White’s work. Well now Ryan has as many yards as McNabb as well. AND I HATE TO BUST ANYBODY’S BUBBLE RIGHT NOW ABOUT RYAN AND THE COMPARISON TO PEYTON MANNING BUT GUESS WHAT. RYAN’S RATING IS HIGHER THAN PEYTON’S RIGHT NOW AND HE HAS THROWN LESS INTERCEPTIONS. So all the Peyton remarks are both extremely ignorant and plain stupid. Keep trying though you might make sense some day.

ok…..but it looks like he was in a bad position being that the kick was short…….he actually did attempted to run up and catch the ball, but obviously backed away when he figured that he cwould not be able to make a clean grasp…….happens all the time, and I see no fault in him for that.

Preston,

Returners are coached at every level to field the ball or stay away from it. Footballs can bounce funny. It could have easily bounced into his ankles there. He misplayed that ball…thinking he could field it when he was too far away to do so. Trying to back off was his second mistake on the play. He shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

I’m very proud of the way the Falcons played today. They never lost hope and gave themselves a chance to win, up to that bad call on the punt. It was still a stupid play on Jennings’ part. That’s the punt he should have fair caught.

Our DEF was simply outstanding until JAnderson went down. After that, our run DEF and our pass rush evaporated. This gm not only showed us how effective JAnderson has played, but it also revealed how effective LT Baker has been playing as well. We had to direct all of our runs to one side.

I just knew we were going to pull another one out like we did against the Bears. I really believed MRyan and our WR’s would continue giving Philly fits like they did on that last scoring drive. We need to upgrade our punt return gm. We’ll just have to take this one out on the Raiders next wk. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VanGorder must go. You cannot beat Philly if they score 27. Go back to Saturdays college boy. This is the big time. And with your record it would not surprise anyone if you jumped ship. Maybe your boy Petrino needs another coach.

By Ken Strickland

October 27, 2008 3:09 PM | Link to this

VanGorder isn’t the problem. When we lost LDE JAnderson, Philly went to work attacking the L side of our DEF. I haven’t said anything about KBrookings to this point. But after paying close attention to him at certain times, I have to conclude it’s time to give Nichols his chance. Philly went after Brookings on isolations with their RB’s and they were very successful. I think age and having to play inside have taken its toll.

Despite Brookings’ size, he’s always relied on speed and quickness and he’s never been a heavy hitter. Without his speed and quickness, he seems to have little else. However, he does seem to do well blitzing the QB.

When you look at this team the first thing you think of is the offense. Now Mularkey has a rookie qb, first year starter at rb, a make shift o-line that many regarded as one of the worst in the league, and Roddy White is starting to look like a budding star. And they are ranked somewhere around the middle of the league statisticly. Our defense is filled with some pretty decent veterans that continue to just barely get by and rank around the lower tier defenses. And you are telling me that Jamal ( borderline first round bust / I just got my first sack in my second season ) is such a force that once he was out it left such a gaping hole in our defense we could not compensate. If that is the case then why does our d-coordinator not have a capable backup in the waiting. I agree Brooking has lost a step, and that being the case why are we not at least rotating someone else at the WLB. I will give a little space for the young dbs though not much more. Lawyer Milloy may have one year left if that. Bottom line is we have no defense. And until that changes we look like a .500 team at best. But the old saying “offense sells tickets, defense wins Super Bowls” could never be more true than now. No my friend,VanGorder must go.

By Ken Strickland

October 27, 2008 6:35 PM | Link to this

SPACE MOUNTAIN-you seem to think getting sacks is all there is to being a DE. Even the NFL recognized this fallacy and started recording statistics such as passes batted down, QB pressures, hurried throws, solo and assisted tackles. Before Anderson’s injury McNabb was forced out of the pocket numerous times. He was pressured into quick reads and overthrew or threw behind his WR’s on numerous occasions. They passed a lot because we were successful in shutting down their rushing attack. After Anderson left the gm Philly started successfully running the ball and McNabb was able to sit in the pocket and hurt us. If you watched the line play you’ll notice Philly often doubled DE Anderson. He beat a doubleteam when he recorded his sack.

Former Falcons CB Dion Sanders is considered one of the greatest CB’s in NFL history. Yet, he never led the NFL in INT’s? If you judged him based on INT’s alone, he wouldn’t be rated as one of the best CB’s in NFL history.

By Ken Strickland

SPACE MOUNTAIN-I’m an Atlanta Falcon fan, not the fan of any particular player. You have to admit, our current DEF is a vast improvement over the last 2yrs. Our secondary has 2 new starters, CB Grimes and FS Hudson. CB Houston is just in his 2nd yr and SS Malloy is no longer a factor in the passing gm. At LB, we have a rookie in the middle and Brookings is nowhere near the player he once was. Boley seems to be suffering from his offseason troubles and isn’t playing up to his standards.

We don’t have a pass rushing or consistent playmaking DT. DE Anderson isn’t where he needs to be, but he’s starting to get there. He’s not getting the sacks everyone wants, but he’s definitely having an impact. Not having DT TLewis really hurts our DEF. At 320lbs+, he gives you everything GJackson ptovides plus more speed, quickness, lateral movement and the ability to rush the passer.

Along with DT Lewis, add a playmaking RDT, a younger more athletic SS, start Nichols in place of Brookings and our DEF will be in the top half of the league, easily. We played a healthy Eagles team, in Philly, and came within a bad call of pulling out a win. I like the way Smith and his staff have put this team together. They’ve shown they’re capable of making in gm and gm to gm adjustments. Our last 2 HC’s couldn’t do either. THEY’VE ACCOMPLISHED AN AWFUL LOT SO FAR, CONSIDERING WHAT THEY STARTED WITH. A SOLID FOUNDATION HAS BEEN LAID AND WE’LL SEE THE RESULTS NEXT YR WHEN THE FALCONS FLY SOLO.

Ken. I have been a Falcon fan for almost twenty years now. And believe me I agree with you on a lot of the issues you have pointed out. With that being said I digress back to my original summation VANGORDER IS NOT AN NFL DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. And the more you point out our players combined strength the more YOU prove that point. The birds have pretty much kept the same base 4-3 defensive alignment the last 5 or 6 years. Coach Smith used this same defense in Jacksonville. I can only believe that by now most of the intricacies of this scheme are embedded in all the vets and most of new guys. If we have as much talent that you claim we have why are they not performing at a higher level than that of the past few years? Do I believe this team is headed in the right direction? Absolutely, unequivocally yes. Especially on offense. The only reason I think they chose Vangorder is because he is not a high profile name so no one will want him anytime soon. And Smitty has a past association with him so he thinks he can groom him. Hey Ken I want them to be right and me be wrong. But up to this point I have not been impressed at all with the defense. The flip side of that coin is our new offensive coordinator ( who has substantial NFL experience) has brought in a completely new system, first year starting rb, effectively using Noorwood, wr’s catching passes, o-line blocking, and a rookie qb at the helm who is setting the standard by which all others will be judged. And has the 10th ranked offense in the league. This is not coincidence. Some coaches just have it and some don’t. Vangorder doesnt. If they keep him I can only hope he is a late bloomer :-).

By Ken Strickland

October 28, 2008 10:15 PM | Link to this

SPACE MOUNTAIN-I don’t know anything about Vangorder so I can’t comment on his ability. Our pass DEF needs to improve. LMalloy is being used as a 4th LB and isnt’ very effective in pass DEF. Our CB’s are playing very well, but aren’t receiving the benefit of an effective pass rush, especially up the middle. Brookings is getting knocked around and isn’t doing an effective job of covering RB’s out of the backfield.

One thing’s certain, we’re not doing a very good job of overcoming those issues.
