Falcons playing power ball
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Falcons are off to a 3-2 start because they have played some good old-fashioned power football.
All of the folks in Lambeau Field knew the Falcons had to run the ball with under two minutes to play. The Packers knew the Falcons were going to run it.
Even the ghost of Vince Lombardi himself knew the Falcons were going to run the football.
Green Bay defensive coordinator Bob Sanders put 10 players near the line of scrimmage. Even with the extra manpower, the Packers still could not stop a determined Michael Turner and the offensive line from carving out 11 yards on three plays.
Turner powered his way behind good blocks from Sam Baker and Todd McClure to pick up the first down with 1:42 left.
The Packers were punched in the mouth by a team they were expected to kick dirt on.
It must be noted that the Packers were without three defensive starters in safety Atari Bigby, cornerback Al Harris and defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins. Also, A.J. Hawk, who got beat by Justin Peelle on a touchdown pass, was playing with a groin injury.
On Roddy White’s 22-yard touchdown pass, for some reason the Packers had their top cornerback Charles Woodson on rookie Harry Douglas. Will Blackmon was left in man coverage on White and got roasted.
In short, this was not the Packers team that went 13-3 last year and went to the NFC Championship game. They repeatedly helped the Falcons out with bone-headed penalties, including a holding call that took a field goal off the scoreboard.
But when the Packers tried to give the Falcons this game, they made enough plays to take it.
Last week in Carolina, the Panthers were stumbling about, but the Falcons couldn’t come up with the plays to take the game.
Against the Packers, they made enough plays, overcame a torching of their secondary for 313 yards passing, and then ran the ball to close out the game.
The Packers’ nine penalties for 97 yards were also helpful. The Falcons only had two penalties for 15 yards.
Now, with the Falcons sitting 3-2 and waiting for a 3-2 Chicago team, do you have to recalibrate your projections?
Did you have the Falcons 4-2 going into the bye week?
How do the Falcons get things tightened up in the secondary?
Which receiver is going to step up and become a factor when teams try to take Roddy White out of the passing game?

Great win by the Falcons and great game by Matt Ryan. Eventough GB had alot of injuries, Falcons teams of past would have went into a game like this and still lost. But, Coach Smith has had this team prepared to play every game this season. We have had a good showing in every game and the Falcons look like a team we in Atlanta can be proud of. I don’t know how many wins we will get this year but Bill Parcells once said “You are who you are” and right now we are 3-2. It will be a tough game against a tough Chicago defense next week and Kyle Orton is really throwing the ball well for them now but, I have plenty of confidence that Coach Mike Smith will have our team ready to play.

DOL, why is Abe only credited with one sack? He shouldn’t be penalized for the fact that Rodgers threw away the ball while in his grasp, and got a penalty. Can you explain why that didn’t go down as a sack?

Tampa Bay beat Chicago with DEFENSE. Chicago had the game won, but Tampa stopped them twice and came back to win 27 - 24, in OT. Griese passed 67 times, for over 400 yards. Chicago shut down their running game. Chicago had three scores (13 points) off Griese interceptions. The Falcons haven’t shown they have a defense that can play 60 minutes of football yet. They haven’t shown they can rely solely on the arm of Matt Ryan, when the running game gets stuffed. The home cooking won’t be enough. The Falcons will need some help from the turnover gods to have a chance next Sunday.

4-2? Dont count the Bears out. They’re playing some good football right now. Were at home, but they went to Detroit and SLAUGHTERED the Lions yesterday. It’s going to be a tough game, no doubt. He’ll I did’nt even think we’d be 3-3 at the bye. I’ll be happy with that, considering how young and inexperienced we are. 4-2 is better, but 3-3 is better than WE ALL thought. I’ve been really impressed with Ryan, Baker, Chevis, and Lofton. All ROOKIES. Good job Dimitroff. And oh yeah, why is Adam Jennings and Michael Jenkins still on the team? When Laurent comes back, Jenkins will be an afterthought. Find the freakin ball already! That was a TD! I had to say that. As for Adam “faircatch” Jennings, you better thank God Thomas Brown got hurt.

The Falcons WILL be 4-2 going into open date. I like this OFF. line, they get after it. I’m concerned with our secondary play, I thought Foxxworth was suppose to help. Also, A.Jennings is a liability at punt return, he is going to cost us a game, i promise. Again,is it me or is M. Turner tiptoeing into the hole, doesn’t show burst into gaps. Go Falcons!

Got to find a way to “get a stop” when we need to. Too many 3rd and 7’s completed for first downs for the Packers, and straight down the middle of the field. Grimes #20, you are a tackling fool and I appreciate your guts and effort…get your coverage skills honed in and you’ll be an all pro.
I believe, like some of you, Brooking is too slow for this game…he looks slow to me. The offensive line, really looks impressive. Can’t say enough about the difference Matt makes…but I do wish he would throw the ball with a little more zip, looks like a lot of floaters.
Please bench J.Anderson; this guy is not NFL 1st round caliber…he does nothing but get beat and blocked most of the time…think if we still had Kearny on the other side of Abe?

Kudzu, Kerney aint doing jack in Seattle right now. Jamal needs improvement, but he plays the run very well, and he’s actually starting to get some pressure on the qb, every now and then. We did’nt give up on Kerney in his 2nd year, when he STRUGGLED BIG TIME, so dont give up on Jamal.

I’m curious as to when they will start using Foxworth. Is Grimes outplaying him in practice or what? The secondary is looking to be our only real glaring weakness. And I do agree with baseball ken on the point of Turner kinda easing into the plays sometimes. In the first game he was playing with some extra explosiveness and I havent seen that lately. He’s still a manbeast though. I think after beating Greenbay we have a legitimate shot at beating anyone, except maybe the really elite teams. But that will come in time. As long as they play with passion and grit I can be patient.

You people are calling Matty Ice “Manning” now, next week he’ll be “Harrington” again. Last week Roddy White was the worst WR in the league, and now he’s “special”. You falcon fans are idiots. I think Robinson will be opposite White in the starting lineup once he returns. Jenkins should be number 4, right above Jennings. THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES SORRY JENNINGS THAT WE CAN USE ON PUNT RETURNS?!?!?! HE’S AWFUL.
Chicago will be a tough battle. Can our special teams stop Hester…I don’t think so. Overall I think it will be a close low-scoring game.

Baseball Ken, Turner definitely tip-toed into the hole yesterday. He ran much harder against Detroit and Kansas City. Tip-toeing against the Bears will result in lost yardage.

Good win. I think J. Anderson is showing a little progress. He was close to his first sack yesterday, although I really would like to see someone other than Abe and Grady getting some sacks. Ryan sure looks calm, cool, and collected for being a rookie in only 5 games played. I was really upset they took him 3rd overall, shows what I know. Ryan was definitely a good pick, but I still think the best move in the off season was bringing in that monster Michael “The Burner” Turner, man he is unstoppable! It’s great to actually be watching a team that can win on Sunday’s instead of just being satisfied that my UGA team won on Saturday’s, which they don’t always do. Now I can be proud of two weekend teams. Way to go NEW LOOK Falcons. Love the fight and progression, things can only get better.

Good Game Birds!
Our secondary definatley needs some work - well, maybe not work, maybe just some more HEIGHT! Theres no way we stick with these short dudes as CB’s. I mean, i hate it, but there must be a better way to utilize Grimes, he’s just too short to block the big pass….obviously.
He needs to play utility with foxworth or somting, we need some taller mates in there against the deep ball - i mean honestly….
Good to see Boley back in the game, nice REACH!
GO BIRDS!

Hey I dont like matt ryan but he had a good game against a banged up GB team. someone please tell me why he didnt attend the combine??..Ill tell you why, he cant make all the throws and we know he cant throw it deep..he will be the type of QB who does just enough to keep his job(a mid-level QB). EX. Jon Kitna. The secondary is awful…you trade for a corner but dont play him…grimes have heart and decent skills and i love that about him, but he is to small and inexperience….foxworth will leave next year if he dont play..the safeties have to help to much for the 2ndary to play good. J. Anderson should rotate with C.Davis cuz this kid is not a DE, he is a DT at best…but they will learn….at the end of the season when he has a # of tackles and sacks, lil QB pressures or hit…the offense really depends on the defense

ummm…Foxworth did play and got beat for the Driver TD in the 4th quarter. Our short corners are not ideal, but Grimes is mostly in position and is fighting. Let’s not give up on him just yet. We could have said the same thing about Houston last year. Chris got killed all season long. Grimes has not been a full year starter yet. Patience.
Why would we assume that Foxworth is any better? Grimes got beat once all game and played every snap. I’ll bet Foxworth played less than 25% of the snaps and got beat too.
Ideally, though, I think Grimes is a slot corner. Let’s give him time, though. He is a fighter, which is something we have lacked.
Same for Andersen. He plays the run well- which is odd for young DE’s. Why would a team just start trading guys that have less than 2 years under their belt. Roddy was terrible his first two years, and there are 100 other players in the league that needed time to develop.
Patience….things are getting better. Let’s trust the guys that are making this a good team.

I would say Foxworth is better #1 cause hes not 5’8……nuff said.
Grimes is a little maniac, yes…but hes toooooo shhooorrttt……i dont want him traded, we just need to utilize him better - maybe someone can invite arm and leg extenders?…hmm…
And Matt Ryan can throw the deep ball - he…did..it….already…..open those eyes mang.
I duno, Maybe Grimes is just the brunt of my irritation with the 300+ yards. I know its not all grimes, by any stretch. But anyone with any common sense knows you need height to contend with the likes of elite NFL receivers….you cant deny that.

Congratulations are in order this week for a great effort. This may be a pivot game. A pivot game is that game that lets a team know it is a little better than they thought they could be. Because a team is always more than the sum of it’s parts, the players will find that if they play together they are more than the individual. The term used in everyday parlance is ” they caught fire” For this team to catch fire this week against the Bears they must control the clock with the run. Keep the time of possession in their favor. Because the Bears will be putting lots of pressure on Matt Ryan the screen play, the quick out and a change of cadence in the snap count to draw the eager beavers off-side is imperative. Once again the O-line has got to open some good holes and if not Matty Ice will have to make them respect him deep to get their defense to back off him. Lets hope the Falcons are ready to dig deep this game will take a lot of heart to win. People know about the Falcons run game now. Lets see if Mr. Ryan can make them respect HIS game. If we don’t get a win pray the injuries aren’t too bad. P.S. Lets all write the league office and complain about the damage done to John Abraham’s jersey. Cause they Damn sure haven’t called anybody for holding him!

QB”s are still going to hit their marks when their is no pressure whatsoever. More pressure equals quicker throws and sometimes that means picks. Abe needs help and even he is not in every play!!And also seen some poor tackling!!! Offense looked good they will keep getting better!! The key to the Falcons winning is Michael Turner every time he goes over 100 yards they win and Matt Ryan has a good game. In the loses he only has 30 to 40 yards and Ryan struggles as well.

With this stirring of the fledglings in the FALCON nest, the draft picks available in ‘09 may not be as juicy as this year’s crop. Therefore the availablilty of trades may not be as great either. I know the ‘SKINS were pleased with their three round swap with ATLANTA in ‘08. Can that happen again.?
The defense needs a great DT AND a great CB that’s 6’0” or over. Rare commodities both. Chances are only one need can be filled by the draft. A FA acquisition or trade will probably have to be rangled for the other. Then a weakside LB to help push BROOKINGS and some strong safety play should bring the defense around. On offense a fleet 6’3” receiver, a durable TE, another solid G/C and a backup T are in order. Also keep in mind with improvement, the team does not play the last place schedule next year. Therefore, the organization must run faster just to keep up. Sounds like a two draft exercise to get to where the FALCONS are headed. Another SUPER BOWL.

A lotta good comments here, perhaps we can agree —
1) Jennings is woeful and erratic returning punts — give Harry Douglas a shot or someone else more consistent. 2) Linebacker play is still sub-par and TD will certainly be looking for help there in the next draft. 3) Love Grimes’ athleticism and toughness — he’s no Pro Bowler but he sells out every play and its not many players you can say that about. 4) We still don’t have a pass rush. 5) This coaching staff is probably getting more out of the talent they have than any in the league. And, so far, the critical, idiotic mistakes that so often plagued the Falcons in their history are not that frequent. 6) The fact that Ryan can run the no huddle this successfully as a rookie speaks volumes…he understands the offense and (most times) what he’s seeing from the defense (we’ll see if he can handle Kiffin better in round 2). 7) This O line is playing extremely well and, at times, abusing people. It’s the heart of any successful team. 8) Overall, a lot stronger performance than any of us expected. Kudos to TD, Smitty and the rest for assembling a team that wants to play.

Great win, good job Falcons. Still playing hard and learning. Mistakes will happen but love the game plans and the effort. As some others have said, the only thing I don’t understand is HOW IS ADAM JENNINGS still on this team? Makes no sense, put Norwood back there, every punt. Wow some fans are insanely hard to please. People nitpicking Turner’s running style is almost as bad as the vick comments.
I’ve been so amazed with the improvement on the offensive line and running backs over last year, that the rest of the season will be cake. Celebrate that our guys are producing and playing hard for a change.
Turner leads the league in rushing, rushing td’s, rush yds/game and he’s second in longest runs on the season with zero fumbles!
I would pay some serious money to watch some of you clowns stand before turner and the team and tell him basically that he runs like a girl through the hole. I just don’t get it. The guy had 121 yds on 26 carries and a touchdown.

The falcons have looked good all season, even in the games they lost. They’ve shown improvements or learned something, which we haven’t seen in a long time. Ryan looks great for what he is, a 3rd round $74 million rookie going into week 6. Turner leading rusher enough said. Sam Baker and the o-line are looking really tough and physical, something we have lacked for a long time. Abe is a beast, if he wasn’t held, tackled, or molested every third play it might not be fair. I think curtis and chevis look good.
The one thing I would like to do is to point out Terrance Moore, you have got to be the most negative and horrible sports writer every. Please find another job or learn to support your team, a team that the city is a few wins from getting behind again and having an atmosphere like 2004.

The Falcons need to run the ball against the Bears. We came out against the Bucs with 3 passes. Chicago has a tough D but hasn’t played anyone that tough either. Run the ball and move the chains. That’s the best thing we can do for our QB and our defense.
Grimes has gotten too much blame for the pass defense woes. Outside of #55, we have no pass rush. Give any QB that much time and he’ll make you pay. We’d better get all over Orton, or it’s gonna be a long day at the Dome.

For the record I live in the same development at Tony Dungy and Gruden and have had several conversations with each concerning Mat Ryan. Both stated that if you saw his personal workout at BC prior to the draft it was evident that this guy was something special. Tony comment that he processed “everything” very quick thinker and a lot of intangibles. Gruden said there was no question this kid could MAKE ALL THE THROWS, as a matter of fact he thought his arm was stronger than the “majority” of NFL quarterbacks already. Gruden stated after witnessing his workout and interviewing him that it would not be long before he was an all pro quarterback and he wished the BUCS had Miami’s draft choice and were in a position to draft him number one.
Tony didn’t comment on his arm strength nor did I ask but he stated, that Ryan was the real deal, extremely bright, humble and a leader which are the “main” ingredients a great quarterback has to have.
I for one think Atlanta was very fortunate to get this kid with the third overall pick. He’ll be around a long time. He has all the physical tools, he’s bright as heck, he’s a leader, the players rally around him and he will never embarrass the team or this community.

The Falcons are 3-2 after only 5gms. I wonder how all of those fools, including some sports writers, feel now about their stupid, uninformed 1-15 or 2-14 predictions? The Falcons will get stronger and more organized as the season progresses. We can already see the gm to gm improvement in MRyan and the OL.
DEEZNUTZ-you’re right. Terrence Moore was posting articles all over these blogs last yr when MVick was the issue and the Falcons were in disarray and losing. Without controversy and/or a losing team, he seems to have little to contribute.
Everyone complains about DE JAnderson’s inability to get a sack. Well, he’s not our biggest problem in our lack of an effective pass rush. We need more pressure up the middle. An effective inside pass rush would flush the QB out of the pocket and force him to throw on the run. An outside pass rush forces him to step up into the pocket, which QB’s are taught to do anyway. We really need a more effective pass rush, especially if our OFF continues to score and forces teams to pass more in order to catch up.

Great win on Sunday….It was the best game I have seen from the Falcons in a long time. They never gave up and kept fighting. Even after the INT, and GB scored, Ryan and Co. got back on the field, fought, and got some points. GREAT Job. The penalties were better as well.
A. Jennings, something has to be done there, we need someone who doesn’t provide a 50-50 chance of muffing the punt every time. It shouldn’t be a question. I hold my breath every time a punt occurs.
I am willing to give Anderson more time, it is only his second season, but he really needs to step it up. The falcons are making special packages on defense, such as moving Anderson outside a little more on the nickel, in order to get to the QB a little faster. This is not working, and for a 1st rounder, why do you have to make special packages for production? You shouldn’t, for a first rounder it should be “here’s where you play, now get after them”. Simple as that. Anderson needs to produce. They talked about this last night on 790 on the Saloon.
Matt Ryan is playing very, very well. Save for the INT, for that play he just needed a simple 3 step drop and launch….That play is not a roll out type, it develops faster than that. But! Ryan will see that on film and he will know next time. That’s what he’s good at. He hasn’t made the same mistake twice so far.
By the way KAYE, Ryan has arm strength, and for your information he has thrown it for more than 40 yards, he threw one for 53 yards. Also, good QB’s do not throw the ball 40 yards every play. I don’t know why some people expect that. It’s not efficient.
Anywho, good win. Let go after DA BEARS!!!!!

RICHBRAVE-I agree, we could use both of those. However, a strong pass rush would make the 6’ CB less of a necessity. While MRyan has done a very good job, I favored drafting a DT. At 1st I was for drafting Dorsey, but after researching QB Flacco, I thought we’d be better off trading down, drafting DT CEllis and using the extra pick to trade up to draft both QB Flacco and OT Baker.

Mike Vick is where he needs to be. Hell after a couple of failed drug tests, he will never play in the NFL again!!! GO MATT RYAN AND THE BIRDS!!!
