Falcons face ghosts of Lambeau Field
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For most of the 1990s, I covered the Green Bay Packers for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel with colleagues Bob McGinn and Tom Silverstein.
The memories still flow. Saw Sterling Sharpe’s last game when he inexplicably went to the field at old Milwaukee County Stadium with a career-ending neck injury.
Was at training camp as Ron Wolf trotted through a parade of NFL quarterbacks, of course Brett Favre, Mark Brunell, Ty Detmer, Aaron Brooks and even a young Kurt Warner. Met all of the assistants - Andy Reid, Steve Mariucci, Jon Gruden, Ray Rhodes and Mike McCarthy - before they become head coaches. My favorite was offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis, he’d diagram West Coast offense plays for me and tell me how they worked or were supposed to work.
Got to see Reggie White toss around linemen at practice when Mike Holmgren wasn’t mad at the media and kicked us out of practice. I think that’s why I still migrate to the one-on-one lineman drills at Falcons practice.
Got to cover the Super Bowl victory over the Patriots in New Orleans and the still stunning Super Bowl loss to the Denver Broncos in San Diego.
So this isn’t a football pilgrimage for me. I’m just glad it’s not December. My challenge will be not to eat too many brats in the press box.
But for a young Falcons team that’s looked shaky on the road, this is a pilgrimage to one of the great football Meccas in the nation. The truth is, despite all of the Packer injuries, the Falcons may not be ready to pull off this road win.
They might be taken aback by coming through the tunnel and looking up to see the names of all the Packer greats — Lombardi, Starr, Taylor, Davis, Wood, Lofton, White, Hornung and Nitschke - on the stadium façade.
Whether if the Falcons win or not, I suspect the fans of the Packers, perhaps the most knowledgeable group in the league, are going to like the Falcons style of play. The Falcons have played hard, mean and nasty under Mike Smith. The Packers’ fans will respect that.
A rookie quarterback in Lambeau Field doesn’t equal success. Michael Turner must run the ball with authority and hope the Falcons can deploy their “Shock and Awe” strategy on the road. Against Detroit and Kansas City they jumped out to big leads of 21 and 24 points to shock their opponents and put the local crowds in awe of the young team.
Now, if they can do that in Green Bay, the original Titletown, U.S.A., they may wake up some of the ghosts of Lambeau Field.
What do you, think about the game? Do the Falcons have a shot? Can they put some licks on Aaron Rodgers if he plays? How’s the secondary going to shut down Greg Jennings and Donald Driver after last week?

Too many holes to fill from reading posts here. Another draft for a monster DT, weakside LB, CB help for MALLOY via FA or trade. Strong safety play needs improvement. O-line needs another stud guard/center and T back-up. One fleet 6’3” split-out and the team takes it to GREEN BAY, but not today.

Advice on ESPN FANTASY is to bench or lose BROOKING and pick up LOFTON if you can. Sounds like the boo birds in ATLANTA are right on the mark regarding the weakside LB play.
I’m a rookie here. Who plays opposite GRADY JACKSON on the D-line.? Who is PETRINO that didn’t want JACKSON ad libbing.? I thought GRADY was pretty good. If he has to be doubled then someone on the line’s not performing properly unless the FALCONS play an antiquated 3-4.

Jonathan Babineaux plays next to Big Grady most of the time. Thing Petrino was looking for a scapegoat so he took Grady’s scholarship to send the vets a message. They play a 4-3 Over.

Greetings. Keep up great work. I have taken a lot of flack about my comments on Keith “No Tackle” Brooking on AJC sports blogs. No problem, I am an adult who can take criticism as well as dish it out. Do me a favor. Monitor NT over the next two games. Look at where he is on field, where play goes, how many tackles he initiates and how many opponents glide effortlessly past him. Then let me know in this blog what you think. Fair enough? God bless. Your eyes will have to convince you if I cannot. PS - I have been long-suffering Falcon watcher since 1966. NT is so far below standards set by Jesse “Hammer” Tuggle and Tommy Nobis it is pathetic.

The falcons can win this one. It will be a test of wills. Everybodys’s eight in the box is not the same. The falcons will be asked to beat them through the air. Can Matty Ice be Matty Ice? Can he find the open receiver. Will the running game make the defense honor the play action pass? Thats the test this week and every week for this season. The O-linemen will have to step up and keep the defense off the field because the best defense is a good offense. Start dropping passess or missing passess and it’s over with.

By stendec. I believe that Brooking was always best suited to play outside. He has played out of position most of his career, now he is in the later stages of that career. Brooking is a soldidr as far as I am concerned and I have criticized this team very harshly this season. It takes a special type of player to play anywhere near the middle linebacker spot weather it be the Sam or Willis spot. So Brookings has done a great job considering I have always believed that he would have been a beast if he had consistently played on the outside the way the Steelers used Greg Lloyd and Joey Porter and the way SD used Marion and Junior Seau or the way KC used Derrick Thomas. Brooking could have put up those types of sack numbers and had the speed to cover alot of ground.

The Falcon chances of winning depends on 2 things. First, if Aaron Rodgers can play close to full strength. Second, if Rodgers is not able to play close to full strength, turn-overs will determine the winner of this game.

We have to get out to an early lead with Green-Bay. Maybe start off with on onside kick? If we get the lead, we can pound the run all day long. Make sure our recievers have stick-em on and maybe try Finnereran on the field during 3rd down plays. He always seemed to have a nack for making the first. I see anotehr long day for our secondary. Smith and Muhammed were just a preview of whats to come Sunday if Rodgers is in at QB. I think we win this game if Rogers is out
Still looking for Anderson’s first sack…….what is it, 20 games now and still empty handed?

The Falcons have been growing game by game and eventually they will win a road game, so why not this week? Sure they still have some holes that need filling and the majority of the team is still wet behind the ears but they are playing with spirit and that is a very big positive. What we have to remember is that right now this team is little more than an expansion team on the fast track to success. We just have to be patient.

All I can say is please start Foxworth. Let Grimes watch and learn a little because we need to be able to stop the pass. Teams are going to continue to pound us until we put a little experience on the field. I’ll be ok if the Falcons lose if they show they are willing to put the better players out to start. With Houston and Foxworth out there I would feel alot more secure in the secondary

Brilliant article. I’m sure the Falcons will immediately forfeit the game upon learning of the mystical forces and hallowed lore of Lambeau Field. Mike Smith needs to make sure the players are not exposed to any episodes of NFL Films presents. Awe of Green Bay’s treasured history will surely be the Falcons’ achilles’ heel this Sunday on the (soon to be) frozen tundra.

RichBrave,
Some nice ideas on the draft. Brooking may break out of his slump. Who knows. It would help a whole hell of a lot if he does. I don’t think we’re very deep behind him…
Stendec, I kind of agree about Brooking. Maybe he can break out of it though. I have no idea, but I do know that he’s not playing near what we need him at and I’m sick of it.
Babineaux is a decent player, but we do need an impact guy at DT to play with Grady. Petrino was a retarded idiot who got rid of the best run-stuffer we had in Grady. Notice how quickly we brought him back after he was gone. Smith is no dummy. Blank and Dimitroff picked the right guy for head coach. He’s going to get the job done.
I say go into Lambeau Field and put those “ghosts” out of their misery…

Hmmmmm Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like the Falcons played at Lambeau on Sept. 13, 1981. They were in awe then, getting shut out for the first three quarters; but once they realized it was a weak Packer team and just a field, the Falcons scored 31 unanswered points for a win.
Not that that will happen this weekend there. The point is its not some mystique that will win this coming game. Its who plays better. That is usually based on who has the better players.
Keep in mind, real grass has a way of slowing down fake-turf fast guys. So far, the Falcons don’t even know what shoes to wear on real grass.

Here’s the problem: the secondary is still going to get light up regardless of who’s playing QB for the Packers. I agree that Foxworth should start over Grimes. He can’t be any worse.
Matt Ryan is showing that in order for Atlanta to win he has to get at least two big downfield passes to complete. It will keep the defense guessing and Turner can get some runs through the line.

After Grady Jackson was cut by Petrino, he was signed by Jacksonville, so he had a chance to learn Smith’s defensive system. I imagine that had something to do with him being resigned by the Falcons this season.
I just remember Grady saying (after being cut) that he liked to ‘freestyle’ a little more than the average 400-pounder, rather than play a system that made him watch someone run through tackles to the left and right, rather than go his way. If he is still like that, I presume Mike Smith is tickled pink over Grady playing his position that way. The question then becomes, why would Smith defend Brooking watching opposing team players break arm tackles, because Brooking is playing the system that teaches him, “stay where the system tells you to stay, even if the runner is going the other way to avoid you”?
Geeez. All this system stuff makes me understand why Aundray Bruce was such a bust in Marion Campbell’s system. It must be real hard to learn a system. Could that system stuff be why JA2 can’t sack a quarterback?

2 tds. That’s all Grimes has given up and it has been to players 6’3 and up. Mike Smith’s defense was never one that limited passing yards. It limited the big play and rarley has Grimes been out of position to make a play or to give up a big play.

I agree that Brooking hasn’t showed up as we all would like, but to address this in an intelligent football conversation, there are some other factors that probably make him better than we think.
First, all teams have systems. Some systems fit players better than others. We will never know what the Grady/Petrino problem was.
I do know this, however, freelancing is only good when it works. When it doesn’t work, bad things happen.
Brooking is a system guy in that he does his job. I am going to assume that none of us track the times where he does his assignment- that is, fills gaps, takes on blockers, containing, running alleys, collisioning TE’s etc.
There is more to football than just the play on the ball. My guess is that Brooking probably grades out better than we think.
Is he missing tackles, yes. I think that he probably doesn’t miss any more than anyone else. I also think that he is just more obvious.
Case in point was with Demorrio. We noticed Demorrio when he made big plays. We didn’t call him out when he was getting plowed. He can’t start in KC, which tells us something about how well he plays consistant, assignment football.
My guess, since Brooking has made it as a starter through 4 coaching staffs, is that he is probably more consistantly solid than some of us give him credit for.
Is he getting near the end? Probably. Is it fair to say that Nicholas or anyone is better than him? I’m not sure any of us is truly qualified to say that logically.
Second, how do we know Foxworth is better than Grimes. Grimes has had balls caught on him, but no real big plays. Again, sometimes it isn’t about letting guys make catches- it is about containment. There were a lot of plays that Grimes played well- obviously, since we only noticed him when the ball went his way.
I think that we need to stop just assuming people are “sorry” because of the few plays we do see and not the ones we don’t.
Grimes has hung tough for a 2nd year guy. Let’s trust Emmitt Thomas on this call.

You turkeys critisizing Brooking’s play wouldn’t know a good linebacker if it walked up and bit you on the a**. How much do you know about the Falcon’s defensive scheme? Do you know what each player’s assignment is on every play? No, you don’t. All you see (when you finally locate the ball) is which players are attempting the tackle. You don’t know what their primary assignment was, how long they had to protect a lane, and whether they are tackling after a gain because someone else got beat on the play. Guess they don’t teach that stuff in your fantasy football world. I guess you know more than the Falcon coaches who rate him their best linebacker, and more than the players who voted him into the Pro Bowl five times. I suspect most of you are doggie fans who remember how he kicked your butts when he played a GT.
By the way, Orlando, if the Falcon players are awed by the dubious mystique of the dumpy Lambeau Field, they have no business in pro football.

Brooking has lost a step and was never a great tackler. In the past he was fast enough to run plays down and make a ‘grab’ tackle. Now he is a half step late and misses because of bad technique. He is not horrible just not as good as he is made out to be.

I have to laugh at MM’s statement about the “O’s” trouble in the Red Zone. I’ve been waiting for it all season and it came.
Mularkey believes the tight ends can be helpful in the red-zone passing game.
“They are involved down there,” Mularkey said. “We threw one to [Justin] Peelle early in the Detroit game. We had a chance to get him the ball, and it went off his fingers.”
ONE IN THE DETROIT GAME? After 4 games? So after 16 games the offense would have attempted to get the ball to the TE 4 times?
I’ll keep saying it. Young QB’s need the TE and RB’s as outlet receivers. Best offense in the division went out and got what before the season?

Of course we believe the Falcons have a shot to win. And the keys to the Falcons success are to limit the opponent’s opportunities by way of a time consuming running game, and the timely passing of the rookie quarterback. Our young offensive team is very close to turning the corner.
As a Falcons’ “player fan”, I’m familiar with the twenty-four hour rule. But in the last four football games, the Falcons’ defense has been predictable. In game one, the no-name Falcons’ defense yielded twenty one points to the Detroit Lions. In game two, the defense surrendered twenty four points to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Game three may have been the best defensively so far, the Kansas City Chiefs put only fourteen points on the board. And in the fourth game, the Carolina Panthers scored twenty-four points. In four games, the Falcons’ defense has surrendered 21, 24, 14, and 24 points to each respective opponent. So, the Falcons’ defense is pleasantly predictable.
The Falcons’ offense hasn’t been as forth coming in the first four games. The offense has been at one extreme or the other; and it has little to do with the quality of each opponent. This is the National Football League. It’s all about execution.
In game one, the Falcons’ offense scored thirty-four points. In the second game, the offense scored a meager nine points. The falcons’ offense scored thirty-two points in the third game, and the defense scored six points to boot. The fourth game was a carbon copy of the second both offensively and defensively. The Falcons lost 24-9.
In weeks five, six, and seven, the Falcons’ offense must shorten the game through long and sustained drives. And if the offense is successful, and the defense remains predictable, and I’m confident that each will, the Falcons’ fans expect our team to exorcise the ghosts at Lambeau Field, tranquilize the Bears in the Georgia Dome and put them on the next flight to the windy city. Count it good as gold that our team will go for broke at Lincoln Financial Field.
Go Falcons go!

Charles,
Don’t go so easy on the Falcon defense. KC missed a chipshot field goal in the red zone, then died on the one yard line, fourth and goal. Give them 6 more imaginary points, for a pretend 20 total.
That goes to show that the Falcons need a minimum of three touchdowns to be competitive. It Ryan throws for 2 TDs and Turner runs for 1, they can feel good about losing 27 - 21.

Kudos to DOL who is doing a nice job with this blog.
The most woeful aspect of the Falcon’s performance last week (and there were several) was the pass rush, utterly lacking. If Abe is doubled and kept at bay we are sunk. Rodgers, even with a bad wing, is likely to pick us apart given that sort of time in the pocket.
I concur with all those who suggest pile jumper Brooking needs to retire — no offense, Brook, but you can’t get it done — but Boley is not exactly setting the world on fire this year either. Has he made a memorable play yet in the first four games? Perhaps so and I missed it.
Speaking of LBs, aside from Nobis and Tuggle, who stands out in Falcons history as a notable LB? Kuykendall? Brezina? “Screwy” Dewey McLain? Joel Williams (made some of the most amazing plays ever)? There are no doubt others, but…
Falcons history is one area where the otherwise fine Falcons website comes up short. Check out the websites of the Steelers, Raiders, Chargers, Bears, etc. — all have a history or tradition page, and celebrate great players and teams of the past, with full rosters, etc. The Falcons organization acts as if nobody played for the team before Matt Ryan walked in the building. Nothing that conveys any of the highlights (and there have not been enough, but more than a few) from the last 42 years. The organization ought to be leading the charge to get #87, the great Claude Humphrey, who would have been stellar in any era, into the HOF. Would you ever know by visiting the site that the 1977 Falcons still hold the record for allowing the fewest points in an NFL season — 129 points in 1977?
Al Davis has a pathetic, dysfunctional franchise, but he still fills seats and makes money because he sells the mystique of Da’ Raiders’ storied history. No, the Falcons don’t have the great championship record of some others, but neither do the Cubs. Arthur and his gang are missing an opportunity to build sustained fan loyalty and interest. Instead, they keep recasting their product each year (“Screamers Wanted”? puhleeze) as if it never existed before.

When are you crackers going to learn that not supporting Vick against those trumped up charges will forever curse this team.

RichBrave, you guess is as good as mine.
What I’m wondering is this: when are people going to learn that supporting Vick doesn’t take a single day off his sentence?
Even more amazing is the assumption or insinuation (by Mr. FreeMikeVick) that all non-supporters of Vick’s legal situation are not black, but in fact….white.
I mean seriously, I thought I was black. Then I find out that not “supporting” Mike Vick has changed all that. While we’re going along with that fairy tale, I suppose that all of a sudden I will find myself to be much more wildly successful than I deserve, all job opportunities will avail themselves to me, and I’ll be richer than my imagination allows. On top of that, I will acquire an unearthly disdain for what used to be my fellow black citizens, while privately being very scared of us (oops, I meant “them”) when not surrounded in safety by several of my new race.
Either that, or I’ll suddenly find myself transplanted into a proverbial trailer park with a bunch of broken down vehicles, mangy dogs, twangy country music on a half-broken radio that never quits, lose two-thirds of my teeth, and get sunburns if I sit around on the porch for too long, chewing on a stalk of grass that some dog just peed on. All the while muttering about the south rising again…
I’ll call ya tomorrow and tell you which one happens. Since I won’t be black anymore, and must now conform to someone else’s idea of a particular culture.
I swear, some people are far more retarded than Jerry’s Kids….they’re giving people with down syndrome a bad name.
But it sure is fun to make fun of them…

Ghosts of Lambeau? Do a Nell Carter with that one would ya? I guess you were in Milwaukee writing back when we were “scared” of those ghosts when the Falcons handed the Pack their 1st ever playoff loss in Lambeau too then hun? These are grown men, I seriously doubt they worry about another team’s tradition. Your suggestion that they will turn to with their tails between their legs like they’re minor leaguers is laughable. I think the Birds will take this one but what does it matter? Like usual when the Falcons win the media will dismiss it and make up every excuse in the book for our opponent when we do take it- got yours yet Orlando Bedwetter? If not, I’m sure ESPN or Deion Sanders playahating azz will have some excuses you can borry for your next pessimistic blog.

Funny though…but you gotta drop the trailer park bit. It’s getting rusty and makes you look like the expert on trailer parks. Come on, I know you have some new material. At least you got “hooked on phonics” right this time. You might just make it to the second tape!
As for me being KKK, well…sorry to burst that bubble but even 500 gallons of bleach won’t turn this dark brown skin to white. Although, I realize that my ability with prose confuses you into thinking that I’m not what I am. Funny thought occurred to me…if you could hear Obama’s voice (having never heard of him), or seen his written words…but not see him…would you think he’s white too? I’ll bet you would. ‘Cause you’re that kind of guy. Yep.
I have to laugh at the “woman speaking on someone’s behalf” reference. Totally hilarious given you blog name and all the squealing you do (which comprises the vast majority of all your posts) about a particular prison bound man. Oh, I think you know more about that sort of thing than any of us ever will. What kind of “support” are you giving there big boy? Ha!

My fellow Afro-Americans, a vote for me is a vote to free Orenthal James Simpson. Further, once innagurated, I will also act swiftly to commute the rest of Mike Vick’s sentence and pardon him from any charges still pending in the state of Virginia. This is the CHANGE America so desparately needs and deserves. Also, please go to my website or the ACORN website and notify us of anyone you know that has died this year. We will spare no expense searching records to make sure those people get to cast an absentee ballot for me. Together, we can free all unjustly sentenced black athletes and get them back to work making millions, so they can support their thousands of relatives. Thank you.

Falcons are picked to lose this 27-13 by Fox sports. Being picked to lose anywhere by anybody when the other team has issues of its own should be sufficient motivation for our guys to come out hard. Then again, with Mike Smith coaching this crew….they’ll come out hard anyway.

We need to pressure Rodgers or whoever plays at QB for Green Bay. They’re not running the ball well, so this will be a major factor.
Ryan has to be careful when working with Roddy White. Charles Woodson is out there, and he’s a QB killer in the secondary. Everybody has GB picked to win this one. We need to figure out our road woes. Today is as good a day as any to do that.

By ray

Falconator, that is definitely putting it into perspective. Of course, your efforts are in vain for some.
I’m looking for Turner to get twice the yardage today that he got last week. Realistic? Maybe, maybe not. But we have to run better. That, and I look for some good wrinkles in the offense as far as playaction goes. And hopefully we’ll see some serious game-breakers from Norwood. I say the Green Bay defense is ripe for it. They’re expecting to get back on track easy by beating us. No time like the present to wreck that expectation. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I hope Aaron Rodgers isn’t playing…
I’ll say this about Vick: I think he would’ve benefitted from playing under a guy like Mike Smith. This guy is motivated and no nonsense. I wasn’t impressed much with Mora. He was a have-fun type of guy who just wasn’t serious or clever enough in a lot of situations. I think Smith would have put Vick in better situations by simply demanding better from surrounding players, like on the offensive line. That zone-blocking stuff was for the birds (no pun intended), and the offense was chaotic. The only reason for it was because every play began and ended with Vick. That’s never a good idea. I won’t even speak about Petrino…

Some people can’t just can’t stand to see the Falcons without Vick. What a shame.
So long for losing 12 in a row.
3-2 with a big win on the road against a good team….not a sorry team as everyone seems to point out after a win.
Falons almost gave it away. Ryan’s pick in the endzone was bad. The defense can’t allow a team to march dwon the field like the Pack did at the end.
Over all stats aside, the team played well. Ryan led TD drives and not jsut FG drives this week. He checked into goodpalys at the line. Got some first downs with his legs. The WR did alot better job of blocking. Line did well run blocking for Turner. Defense played ok but not good against the pass.
A win is a win. 3-2 after 5 games is better THAN ANYONE THOUGHT INCLUDING MYSELF.
WAY TO GO ON THE RAOD AND GET A W IN A VERY TOUGH PLACE AGAINST A VERY GOOD TEAM.

He was in LaLa Land watching on final Pack touchdown! Did not make a damn solo tackle all day. Worthless quitter! Roddy “Another Drop” White lived up to reputation! Cost team timeout due to ineprirude. When will Falcons get secondary? Cannot defense a one-armed quarterback. Completely unacceptable! Falcons need to pressure quarterback! Hmmm…what was that I said earlier in the blog…that Green Bay was ripe for this one? Looks like I was right. And all the news media “experts” that picked Green Bay to win, and win by more than a touchdown, can kiss the dirty bird’s a$$. Oh, and another thing I said: I was looking for Turner to get twice as many yards as he did last week. He got 56 last week. Today, he got 121. For those who can’t do math (among other things), that’s a bit more than twice. Looks like I was 2 for 2.
How sweet it is, even with Ryan’s one mistake. In fact, I’d have to say that Ryan played damn well. 16-26 with a couple of touchdowns, 194 yards and one pick? Definitely could have been worse. Ask Rodgers about the timing of such a play. Ryan’s was bad timing, but Rodgers’ was worse.
Our defense held when we needed it to, despite the torching our secondary took. I was worried about that because Aaron Rodgers is no joke. He certainly didn’t look as hurt as they claimed he was. He sure threw for over 300 yards. Wow. Sooner or later, Ryan and his crew of receivers will be that good. Speaking of which, Roddy White looked great out there.
And you have to give him a lot of credit for that block he put on the defender that helped Burner Mike Turner get that last touchdown.
Brooking had a pretty decent game. Have to give him credit after scorching him lately.
Overall, our team fought hard and didn’t give up. And they were rewarded with a win against a decent, but battered team. I’ll take the win thanks, and so will any true Falcon fan. Well, we’re 3-2 guys. That’s three more wins than some people gave us credit for. And that’s a winning record….regardless of who is or isn’t standing behind the center…get my drift?
Go Falcons!!

Ignoring the fake Vick blogs and ignorant white guys that keep addressing those blogs, they actually played a game today. The Falcons have come a long way in 5 games, but don’t be fooled, they have a long way to go to be a good team. In the second half, the Falcons could make few stops, and that’s with a sore arm opposing QB. Unless they can get a pass rush, losing will happen more often than winning. I don’t know if the defensive coach is the cause, but the guys on radio kept saying the Falcons never were changing up their defenses today. I’ll leave that issue to the experts. I was very unhappy with the Ryan pass intercepted in the end zone. He should have stopped and threw that pass 2 seconds sooner than he did. The speed in the pro game is too fast to delay as long as he did. However, overall today, he looked a little better than most rookies in just 5 starts.

Get back on and contimue the criticism. Don’t only show up when we lose. Continue to spout your stuff when we win. Be consistent. Of course, it doesn’t sound nearly relevent when we win.

Will you Vickophants NOW give it a rest ? Has it finally sunk in that we now have a QB who is good on AND off the field ? Anybody who disagrees has NO objectivity. Ryan will only get better with time. It looks like Dmitroff made the right call after all. What’s Dorsey doing so far with KC? They got blown out 34-0 today.

Stendec, can’t argue with what you say about the secondary and quarterback pressure (although Abraham made some plays). I think we’ll be addressing that through draft or free agency next year. It doesn’t happen over night.
As for Roddy White, don’t you want to change that to Mr. Another catch? Even the one he didn’t “catch” was only a bobble. Other than that, 8 catches for the most yards for a receiver so far today. A little credit where it’s due…
Brooking wasn’t great, but he had 7 solo tackles. Look at the stats. It’s better than it has been.
We won, man. And nobody had us picked to win. Calm down. Did you think we’d be at 3-2 after 5 games? I know I didnt…

Navigator, no we’re not a “good” team, but we’re a lot better than people thought we’d be when the new era began. Remember how ticked off people were when the draft picks were made, and how the “experts” said we probably wouldn’t win a game? You have to admit we’re a lot further along than we could be.
I don’t know how management plans to address the secondary. I don’t know if they’re going to just go with what they have this year and address it next year, or go for a fix sometime this year. Your guess is as good as mine.
Oh yeah, and the fake “Vick” posts are a bit much, aren’t they? Perhaps somebody in marketing is all about using some sort of sordid reverse psychology to drum up support for an organization that was much-maligned for its sudden changes. The funniest part is that the person probably is a white guy. Who knows. It was fun to see if one could rattle the clown in the cubicle every now and again, but it gets boring after a while.

I wonder if the Green Bay fans are making as much noise on their forums about missing Favre and hating Rodgers as some of these morons are about Ryan and Vick?

The thing I love about matt ryan is he didn’t hang is head after that big int. He showed some guts and got back out there and did his job down the stretch. The kid is a fast learner and he will review that play thru film study and I feel confident he won’t make that mistake again. Next time he will set his feet and make that throw sooner and get the TD. I’m very impressed with how he was able to run the quick offense today and make some of the play calls at the line. The TD pass to roddy was a beatiful throw in the corner. He will still have his ups and downs but he will only get better as the season wears on. Another thing that has surprised me about ryan is his ability to move around in the pocket. He is definently not the statue that some detractors on this blog have claimed. I concur that Dimitorff made the right call on drafting matt ryan over dorsey. Dorsey will be a good player but his injury history suggest that he will likely have a short career.

hey roan…right on point…what I loved is to see Ryan throw an int and not go off and pout by himself like #7 was famous for…the kid is good now….how good will he be when the game actually slows down?? A chance to go into the bye week at 4-2?? I’ll take it…all you Vick lovers need to stay home next week so we can go root for the FALCONS!!!!!

Pretending like Matt Ryan didn’t play well or wasn’t important to the Falcons’ victory today is stupidity. Pretending like Ryan has done anything to equal the NFL success of three-time Pro Bowler Mike Vick or is in any way better than him yet is also stupidity. Responding to trolls is dumber than both.
In short, all y’all are morons (except for you Ray).

MV would have overthrown the wide open Roddy White on the first TD drive the Falcons had, would have tried to run it from the 4th and goal and failed…this can go on as you see.
Matt Ryan threw a bad pick in the 4th quarter but the team rallied around him and he didn’t hang his head and sit on the bench by himself, like some other QB for the falcons used to do.
The way you measure progress with a young team is week to week improvement and being competitive in every game.
True Falcons fans, the future looks bright. We will have to take our lumps for a couple more seasons, but by year 3 of the Mike Smith/Matt Ryan/Michael Turner regime, we will be a legit playoff contending team and MV will be just a footnote in the ATL. Falcons history!
Go Falcons! Bears, watch out. We are not the Lions and the game is at the GA Dome. You know what that means! Be ready for a fight and a 4 quarter game.

I’m sorry some interpreted my comments as negative, they weren’t. My comments were based appraising what the Falcons are missing now. It’s obvious the offense is playing better than anyone was expected, and the offensive line is playing better than last year. I think the area of improvement needed (draft or free agency) is the defensive line.

Well said falcon fans, well said. If Ryan didn’t throw that pick in the endzone, he would have had three touchdown throws. I think the only reason Turner got off today is because Ryan picked the GB defense apart for most of the game. Great job by the rookie qb. Ryan has the best qb stats of any rookie, preseason and season. Facts are facts, the falcons made the right pick.

Michael Vick threw 2 TDs in his first 8 games. Ryan already has 4 in his first 5. I like where this team is headed with Ryan.

For the most part, the offense worked the way it was supposed to work. The air attack freed the ground attack, which kept the air attack free.
Najeh, thanks for not putting me in the moron patch. And I agree, Ryan is no pro bowler yet, so he doesn’t compare to Vick. But he wouldn’t anyway, his career is only 5 games old. But these guys know what he’s about, and they like him, trust him. And he’s only going to get better (barring injuries). Imagine who we’d be watching out there if we had drafted Dorsey…
Navigator, I agree. I’d also add that we need help in the secondary, too.
Supes, I think that’s the biggest difference. Ryan goes to the huddle with confidence and optimism…and his teammates believe in him. After he threw that interception and they stepped back on the field, they drove right down the field and scored. In the past, we would have gone 3 and out. We’ve been missing that confidence in the huddle, that ability to check down and change plays. To get others involved in the offense so that they too can play at a high level. Those guys know what Ryan is about when he gets in the huddle.
None of this “well, we don’t know what the hell he’s going to do, so we’ll just zone block and maybe it’ll be okay.”
It’s the normal, bread and butter stuff that gets you through games. You can’t rely on big plays only to win a game. That’s a thing of the past.

what Mike Vick brought here was hope. After years of hopelessness with only occasional glimpses of hope, Vick brought real hope. When he left it seemed like hope left with him.
Mike Smith and Matt Ryan have given Falcons a new hope.

If Vick were in the game, he would not have thrown a KKK style INT that nearly cost them the game.
I hope Ryan gets exposed for being a pedophile and Vick returns to win this franchise a Superbowel. Daunte Culpeper can be his back up and DJ Shockley will be 3rd QB.
