The Green Bay curse of Samkon Gado

There have been several intervening events, but the Falcons have not been the same franchise since their last meeting with Green Bay during the 2005 season.

In the season after their trip to the NFC title game, the Falcons were off to a 6-2 start when the Packers came to the Georgia Dome on Nov. 13, 2005.

The Packers were hurting. Running backs Ahman Green and Najeh Davenport were injured and then Coach Mike Sherman had to start rookie running back Samkon Gado.

Gado, who was making his first NFL start, rushed for 103 yards and score three touchdowns, sending the Falcons fortunes spiraling.

The Falcons closed out the season 8-8. The 2006 season started out fine as they jumped out to a 5-2. But the Falcons dropped consecutive games to Detroit and Cleveland on their way to a 7-9 mark and the end of the Jim Mora’s tenure.

We don’t need to review what happened next starting with the magic water bottle through Bobby Petrino’s exit.

But since the day Gado rampaged through the Falcons run defense, the franchise has gone 14-29 and have not made it back to the playoffs.

The Packers are banged up again and could have a backup running back ready for the Falcons. Stephenson High’s Kregg Lumpkin is one of the backups who could play if Ryan Grant’s hamstring doesn’t improve.

What do the Falcons have to do to turn around their fortunes? They handed the Packers their first playoff loss at Lambeau Field in 2003. Is the historic stadium the place where they post their first road win in the Thomas Dimitroff-Mike Smith era?

Guys like Gado show whow saturated the position of RB is with talent and how lineman never get due credit. Gado ran well when Green Bay controlled the O-line. There are so many talented RB’s out there that it’s relatively easy to find one. However, RB’s need blocking to be effective. Look at Michael Turner. He’s looked great vs The Lions and Chiefs, stuffed at the line vs Bucs and Panthers. Too often fans and media want to act like RB’s are the only factor in the running gam.

Almost all football games are decided by OL play. I would love to see an experiemnt of a team that drafted OL and DL first round every year for 7-10 years or a NFL team use a ton of cap room on AllPro lineman and line up with a journeyman QB and RB just to see what would happen. Drafting skill position players is a waste until you find good lineman.

Amen, Dogbyte!

Halsey, I think that the fact there are so many 1,000 yard RBs out there are more indicative of a great line controlling the line of scrimmage.

That said, I think Turner is the key to winning on Sunday. We can’t expect Ryan to carry the load (although he does need to make better decisions in the red zone) and in order to keep the offense going The Burner and the O-line have to control Green Bay’s Defense.

Offensive line players and a legitimate passing threat = a good running game. For the most part, the name of the running back does not matter.

Football teams with good-to-great offensive lines and good-to-great defensive lines win more games than they lose.

In most instances, the “skilled” players get most of the credit on a good team and most of the blame on a sub-par team.

Sam Gado, Emmitt Smith, any/all Denver Running Backs in the past 10 years, Kurt Warner, Troy Aikmen, Tom Brady, Big Ben, etc. are some very good examples of over-rated players who have benefited from the team they play for.

There are a few exceptional players (such as Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, Dan Marino) which are talented & smart enough to have success even without great teamates on the O-Line.

Great defensive lines also make some linebackers seem better than they would be on other teams (i.e. Ray Lewis & Brian Urlacher).

Agree or disagree, there is truth to what I have just typed.

No the position of RB is not saturated. If so Gado would have repeated his performance again in subsequent 43 games. It’s not relatively easy to find RB’s. What you do see is the relatively short careers of RB’s.

His performance yes, does speak to the importance of the OL but it also speaks to the weakness of the Falcon defense. Look at the rushing stats of the opponents since then.

Who has led the league the previous three seasons in yards per carry? Michael Turner. He’s no fluke.

Vick Supporter 2, I remember that game. I watched it with my seven illegitimate kids. Vick was AWESOME! Sometimes, when I visit one of my four baby daddies at jail, I think about him, wonder how he’s doing.

But enough about that, it’s the first of the month! Time to cash some checks!

Well we all know the real reason the run defense was unable to stop Gado that day (or anyone else the rest of the year) was because of Michael Vick. At least that’s the impression you would have gotten reading your typical AJC football comment section at the end of that season.

A consistent offense, both passing and running, begins and ends with a consistent offensive line. The Falcons finished 7-9 that year because of Jim Moron, Poor McKay and company’s consistent indifference to acquiring talented offensive linemen.

I second that analysis Najeh. It’s a shame that McKay never realized the importance of a decent oline. The dline was far better, but was less than spectacular at times, outside of a healthy Kerney and Coleman. Mike Smith does get it though. Watch for a complete makeover of the dline next year. We are a CB, UT, ballhawking safety and DE away from being pretty good on defense. Also, bench Brooking soon and force him to retire like ya’ll did Tuggle a while back.

Which had a bigger impact on the Falcons making the Super Bowl in ‘98 - Jamal Anderson or the OL (with Big Bob W.)? I agree the OL is key, but some RBs can make a hugh difference. I believe (hope) Turner is one of those special players…and the OL is just going to get better with Tommy/Smitty running the show.

The only thing i see that the falcons can do to turn around their fortunes is to hope and pray that MV7 return to them. It’s to bad that it can’t be this year though. So,maybe they should just forfeit the rest of the season and wait on the return of Michael Vick!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VICK SUPPORTER I do remember that game. I seem to recall Atlanta winning in spite of your boy. They scored on a horrible fumble call that should’ve been reversed for Green Bay. Also, Atlanta scored on a pick six for Favre. So really the only thing Vick did was generate one drive to the end zone while the defense did the rest.

Anyway, now that there’s a chance that Rodgers will be out, this could hurt Atlanta’s game plan as they don’t know if Flynn or Brohm will start, so they won’t know how to defend their mechanics. Regardless of who’s behind center, the real key will be if Ryan can finally get the Falcons in the end zone on the road.

I agree with Vick supporter, but I think it’s a moot point now. The man screwed up, and it was his own fault.

Frank Beamer… mean spirited response, but understandable, considering if I ever see Vick again, I’m taking a swing at him.

Maybe the standards are low now, but frankly, I’m shocked that anyone in Atlanta has the restraint to insult Vick without dragging racial issues into it… like the earlier response.

Mora wasn’t perfect, but he was good. Dogfighter took too much on-field blame, but it doesn’t matter. I’m happy with our current guys, and maybe I’ll be wearing a Ryan jersey next year as I cheer on Coach Borgnine.

Without Ryan Grant, and Aaron Rogers, this will be the Falcons best chance for a road win during the season.

The game is off the boards in Legas, meaning the injuries are coming into play.

Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm would be no problem for the Falcons to defend. Blitz, put them in long 3rd down situations and watch the inexperience come to play. They do it to Matt Ryan on the road so far, no reason why Falcons defense can’t step up and shut down the packers at lambough field this weekend!

The QB I wanted for the falcons played well Monday. Joe Flacco has the arm to make it in the NFL.

It was a time when a weak arm QB could lead you to a Super Bowl. But those days are fading fast. Today QB must be able to put the ball in a tight window which your current QB can not do which is why y’all have problems in the red zone.

I remember that Gado game and im still p** about it. Our offense did more than enouogh that day to win but our defense (like it did a lot that season) just could not stop anybody.

Green Bay has a nice defense and Ryan has struggled against good defenses but if Rogers is out we might have a chance. What is going on with Boley? He hasn’t made a big play this season. I wont even get started on Jaamal “Ludacris’ Anderson.

I’m going to laugh my a$$ off when this team goes 7-9 or 8-8 with a rookie quarterback, brand new head coach, and what many consider a patchwork roster.

Why?

Because for all the claims about “turning our backs on Vick”, what kind of seasons was he (and to be fair, the entire team/organization) turning out after that wonderful 2003 campaign? Oh, that’s right…7-9 and 8-8. Oh but we don’t want to deal in facts, now do we? No, because that makes us look and feel stupid when we keep bringing up race issues.

Yep….and still no answer on who it was, be it fan, blogger, or member of the Falcons franchise that put Vick in jail…other than Vick himself. Nope, no answer because we don’t like the truth. In the meantime, I suppose the Falcons were supposed to wait 2 freakin’ years for Vick to come back out of prison, then appeal to Roger Goodell to reinstate him, with Chris Redman or Joey Harrington as the incumbent starting QB the entire time….just so we could save Vick’s spot for him. Right.

The Falcons only chance for victory is to play good defense. That will include a plan to blitz a rookie quarterback, whenever he is in passing downs. In order to do that successfully, someone has to tackle the Green Bay running game. If they cannot stop that, the rookie quarteback will become a wise old pro and sneak in a few nail in the coffin passes. Remember, the Falcons lost to Carolina without Delhomme, with third-stringer Weinke starting, who only had one win as a starter in his career. He got win number two (his last win as a starter) against the Falcons. He only passed seven times. The rest of the game Carolina direct-snapped to one of two running backs, neither of which the Falcon defense could adequately stop. The lack of a quality starting quarterback for Carolina meant a final score of 10 - 3, Carolina won. An aside note is Mike Vick was the quarterback for the Falcons that whole game (9-20-0-2 @ 109). The point is, don’t take anything for granted. Our rookie quarterback still has to prove he can win on the road, against a good defense. He has a bad history in that regard, so far. The Green Bay rookies have no history yet; but they are playing at home.

By Boo Boo

October 2, 2008 1:30 AM | Link to this

Another thing, Gado did not beat the Falcons in the 2005 game, as much as he would not be the reason they would lose. He played his heart out. That game was fairly evenly played; but the Falcons turned the ball over three times, compared to the Pack’s once. A short field makes it easier for a running back to score two touchdowns on 103 yards rushing.

Final thing, Atlanta entered that game with Green Bay with a 6 - 2 record, on the way to an 8 - 8 collapse. Green Bay was 1 - 7, coming to the Georgia Dome, on their way to a 4 - 12 season record. The Falcons were taken by surprise, as they have been so many other times before in their sordid history.

I hear MV7 is scrambling in the showers, but still carries the soap like a loaf of bread. I also hear that he kinds of likes it when they do a big pileup on a shower room “goal line stand”. One thing is for sure, when he gets out, his BALL handling skills will have improved.

I agree with Boo Boo. THe key is defense. Let’s get some pressure on whoever is playing QB for GB. Contain the run and force some early passes. It’s clear with our young secondary, that when opposing receivers get into space they can make big plays. Also I’d love to see a big special teams play this week, a punt return or kick return for a TD. GO BIRDS.

I have posted in other blogs that we would lose 12 in a row, but I will be very haappy if I am wrong. We have a very good chance at stealing this game in GB. If Rodgers do not play or if his play is limited due to his injury we are very capable of squeaking out a victory in a low scoring game. As long as we continue to just let Matt Ryan manage the game and do not put him in position to make rookie mistakes, we can definitely beat GB with a any one of the rookie QBs they start. I know GB has a good defense but they have injuries on that side of the ball as well. But we still will win no more tha 4 games this year, unless the injury bug stikes almost every team we play. If we lose this one with an ineffective Aaron Rodgers or a rookie starting for GB, I say lets start Redman for the rest of the year and let the rookie sit and learn. Coach Smith can’t afford to pile up to many loses his first year as caoch, you people will drag him under the bus worse than Al Davis dragging Kiffin. Damn, what a press conference.

By PANTHERS, the view of Vick’s popularity in this city is skewed on this blog. Many people, black white or hispanic loved Vick and still want him to be a Falcon. The people on this blog are jacka$$es that just want to get a rise out of people.

You people do realize that Vick is starting the process for his readmittance to the league. When he is let out in 09 it is going to be crazy. He is still on the roster, it is not a done deal that the Falcons will trade or release him. Some of you keep posting, he is gone get over it. It is not that simple, The NFL is all about money which is generated by star players on winning teams. MV7 had a winning record and he generated millions for the Falcons and the City of Atlanta. If you all saw the entire post conference by Al Davis it gave you a glimpse of the inner workings of a NFL franchise. MV7 has many fans in this city and when he returns many fans will still fill the seats for home and road games to see him. All I am saying is “MONEY TALKS AND THE BULL&*^% WALKS”.We will see in 09 if the Falcons have really moved on from him. But all that hinges on the wins we get this year and the amount of empty seats that are in the dome each home game. Don’t blame all of it on the economy. Many fans are dissatisfied and only wins can help them get over it not PR stunts.

Psssst, Can’t you people see? Vick was a patsy, but he’ll come out smelling like a rose. He was just too big to stay in a cow town like Atlanta. The people who run the show in the NFL knew Artie Blank would never cut him free. Blank had carnal love for the man. They had to tear Vick away by using the one true love Mike Vick has, against him - Vick loved killing dawgs. They have Vick, right now, in a high-security training facility in Levenworth, KS. Nothing but state of the art workout equipment in the basement there. Vick is going to come out a monster playa; and he’s going to play again in the NFL. Only he will go to a real big city team, with all season ticket holders a brotha or sista. Don’t tell anyone, but it will be very much like Detroit. Every home game he plays there will be like a mega rap show, with all the fans swaying back and forth in the stands, with Vick dancing on the field. Just like old times again. Tailgating will be replaced with “tail-making.” Atlanta just had too many white fans to keep Vick. They under appreciated him, so he had to go to get some real respect. With the next great American President on the way, with a plan to change America through reparations, America will be giving government subsidies to underprivledged, inner-city ghetto dwelling sports fans. This will finally make up for 200 years of sports oppression, as the poorest will get free box seat season tickets. President O will also bring about a new elementary school steroid program, in the schools of the ‘hood’, designed to bring out that special talent all African-Americans are born with - athleticism. That program will bring about a future that will always be full of new Mike Vicks. The plan is to have some be herpes free. But, for the time being, Vick Supporters should be checking out the choice property in the Projects of D-Town, cause that’s where it will be happening next.

Exhibit A: The same O-Line last year looked decent with Norwood and Horrible with Dunn. It takes good blocking 1st and then a good back to know what to do with the blocking. Every D-lineman is getting blocked in SOME direction so it takes a good back to read those blocks.

Exhibit B: (how do I keep getting pulled into these Vick blogs LOL?) Vick as good for the city. People act like they can’t remember the pre-Vick era. Constant losing. Oh yeah, kinda like the post-Vick era. But moving on, we have to support the guys lining up on Sunday and stop spewing hate at each other about things we cannot control. Go Birds?

Perhaps we can inject just a tad of football into the Vick/Racism/whateverthefuckever blog….

I think we’ll win more than 4 games this year, like somebody else said…as long as we can avoid the serious injury bug. This team fights hard, and there are enough teams out there who aren’t that good. Ryan is still going to take his licks.

I sure hope Brooking gets his damn act together. He is stinking it up out there. He’s what, at half his usual number of tackles, despite the fact that he is back to playing his natural position. We need him to be out there doing what Milloy is doing: supporting the run, helping against the pass, and leading these young guys. Come on, Keith!

We have to establish a better run game against Green Bay. Much better than we did against Carolina or Tampa Bay. If we do, that takes the pressure off of Ryan some. At the same time, more play-action passes would help because they will keep the defense honest.

Pass-rush has to improve, or our secondary is going to get over-worked again. I think we can really do this, though.

Lofton is learning, but he’s a bear against the run. You can tell he’s bigger and stronger than both Boley and Brooking. Most runners are going to catch hell against him and Grady Jackson. Usually takes two guys to block Grady…then you run into Lofton. I like this kid. He’s going to be good. Notice nobody’s saying anything about not having Glenn Dorsey. He wasn’t going to turn things around for us anymore than any other single draft pick. And picking the top offensive lineman in the country wouldn’t have made Harrington or Redman any better, either.

And Jamaal Anderson is impressing NO ONE…

ray:

Next draft I think they should draft for the D-line(DT) first, and make it a predominant defensive draft. TE second round. Get Malloy some help at DB via trade or FA. Another LB at third and DE at fourth also. One more O-line stud at five or did the FALCONS lose a pick in the swap with the REDSKINS.?.

BIG GRADY, does he need a partner in crime in the middle of that line.?

Isn’t Big Grady the same guy Petrino cut last year, because he wasn’t playing the system? Grady admitted he liked to ‘ad lib’ more than follow a system. If that is the same guy, is Smith’s system the kind that allows Big Grady to ‘ad lib’? Why isn’t Brooking allowed to ‘ad lib’ as the system’s weakside linebacker? Why hasn’t Domonique Foxworth able to learn this system? Inquiring minds want to know.

Great propaganda piece on Keith “No Tackle” Brooking. Who wrote this trash? Whoever did would have been wonderful as publicist for Adolph Hitler during the early 1940s as minister of propaganda. What garbage! Good old NT is a liability to the Falcons or any other team. He has not made a meaningful (game-changing) tackle in decades! NT is slow, untalented, soft and, I suspect, senile. So shake his hand, pat his fanny then send him on his way. Get a player in the lineup who is UNAFRAID to tackle! Defense has sucked thus far. Claude Humphrey and John Zook would be ashamed!

An aside to last post before sleepy time. Keith Brooking can get the Hell out of Atlanta and take Roddy “Another Drop” White and Kari (Sori Letemin) Lehtonen with him! Good night all. Pleasant dreams.

Advice on ESPN FANTASY is to bench or lose BROOKING and pick up LOFTON if you can. Sounds like the boo bird in ATLANTA is right on the mark regarding the weakside LB play.

I’m a rookie here. Who plays opposite GRADY JACKSON on the D-line.? Who is PETRINO that didn’t want JACKSON ad libbing.? I thought GRADY was pretty good. If he has to be doubled then someone on the line’s not performing properly unless the FALCONS play an antiquated 3-4.

By ray, Glenn Dorsey or Sedric Ellis would have improved our team in the long term. Also, any one of the top O-linemen would help. I still say we should have started the rebuilding process by drafting a lineman and started Redman as QB then drafted a QB in 09, but it is what it is. Many of you are complaining about the defensive play and why Turner can’t get many yards against better teams, weel thats because good defnse and good offense starts with the lineman. I wanted us to get Dorsey in the 1st round and then maybe Flacco in the 2nd round if we persisted on gettin a QB this year. Many believe that The Ravens would have taken Ryan in the 1st round if he was available and that Flacco would have been there for us in the second round. Flacco is looking like a baller, but like I said it is what it is.

Vick will return to the NFL my caucasian friends/enemies. He will dominate. The Falcons will be nothing again, as usual. THE FALCONS ARE NOTHING WITHOUT THE GREAT MIKE VICK
