Pearls of wisdom from BIG GRADY
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Pearls of wisdom from BIG GRADY
Defensive tackle Grady Jackson gets an up-close and personal look at the opposition’s offense and usually has an interesting view from the trenches.
He wants to take away what he calls Carolina’s “double-edged sword.”
“We can’t go in there with them having a double-edged sword, the running game and their passing game,” Jackson said. “We have to take one of their weapons away from them and make them one dimensional.”
One good thing for Big Grady and the Falcons is that DeShaun Foster is gone. He signed with San Francisco in the offseason. Of his seven career 100-yard games, four of them came against the Falcons. In 2005, he rushed for 131 and 165 yards against the Falcons.
However, rookie Jonathan Stewart is off to a good start and is a better change of pace to DeAngelo Williams. Stewart is a power runner with enough speed to be the kickoff returner.
To take away the other sword, Carolina’s passing attack, the Falcons will have to control wide receiver Steve Smith. This might be the first game that the Falcons miss DeAngelo Hall. He always got fired up for this matchup, even though his blowup last season took the team out of game at the Georgia Dome. Lost in Hall’s madness was that he was in the processing of shutting Smith down. He had a superb going before he lost his cool.
One interesting fact is that the visiting team has won the last five matchups. The Falcons won in Carolina last season when Joey Harrington found Alge Crumpler on a seam route for a 30-yard touchdown in the final minute for a 20-13 final.
Which sword can the Falcons take away from the Panthers? Will Big Grady work out Wharton like John Abraham used to when Wharton played tackle? Is Stewart the real deal? Can Abraham take away the passing sword by sacking Delhomme about four times?

The Falcons will give up a big running play and I expect Carolina to have about 130 yards on the ground. But I don’t expect the Birds to give up a lot of points. I think Carolina will be limited to 17. The real question is will Matt Ryan be able to hit enough big plays in the passing game to keep the Panther defense off them and allow the Falcons to score more than 17?

Good blog today. Brian Hunt, sir, that is probably as accurate is it can get before gametime. The Pathers will probably bust a few long plays, but our D is highly motivated. See L. Milloy’s 22 tackles and J. Abraham’s 6 sacks. Big Grady will be ready to stuff and the rest of the D is playing at a high level of confidence. I predicted a 27-13 win against Carolina and sleep on the Birds if ya will. We comin to Charlotte to play football. Smitty gonna get cracked by somebody. We’ll get a pick or two as well. Our 1-2 punch at RB will do damage and MR2 throws for 250 for the first time. They wont be able to outscore us.

Stewart is definitely the real deal… don’t sleep. Falcons go down something like 20-13.
And hopefully, Chris Houston is watching the film of D-Hall shutting down Smith.

Just tryin to remember when D. Hall stopped Smith? He burnt Hall to a crisp. It was TD city for Smith when they went head to head. Now I gotta dig out some stats from the past 4-5 years man. Ya got me goin wit this D. Hall crap.

Carolina struggles with Atlanta with the Falcons hit Delhomme. He waves his arm in disgust, yells at his teammates and continues to lose his cool. Get to Delhomme, hit him often and stick around.

Ok…In 5 games head to head Smith had 22 catches for 267 yds and 2 TD’s with 9 of the catches for 1st downs. D. Hall had 19 tackles with 2 passes defenced and 0 interceptions. Brent Grimes and Chris Houston can do that. I don’t fear S. Smith or M. Muhammad as serious threats against our secondary. We are better at the safety position than years past as well. Our linebackers are better and we always play up for our NFC Dirty rivals. i’m just glad Chris Draft don’t play for ‘em anymore. He was mad at us for gettin rid of him and he took it out on us.

Having Big Grady in the line up is a plus and me crystal ball is telling me that J Anderson will have his day in the sun. Thanks to Grady!
Should our O Line give The Ice Man 3.5 seconds, (He is a rookie he needs the extra.5) then we may see something special.
I wont predict a score, they will get theirs and we will get ours.
Off the cuff if T-Rex has to sit this one out so be it.
Would be nice for him to gain experience from Peppers. No matter how you Slice it and Dice it, Peppers is an opponent that will help Sam to become a great player.
Thankfully we Play the Panthers Twice.

Hey Y’all:
ONE HHEARTBEAT!!! ONE HEARTBEAT!!!! I said it before and I wiil say it all season: ONE HEARTBEAT!!!! That is how the FALCONS are going to beat Carolina and all the other teams they will confront this season. The Falcons will play great special team, great defense, and great offense, to include great coaching in winning against the PANTHERS and everyone else in the league. They will play in a coordinated fashion to either nuetralize and or destroy the oposition. As BIG GRADY said ” We are going to take away one of their two options and then excute everything else to a “T” as “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”. You see the coaches have a scheme for winning. And if the Team moves as “ONE HEARTBEAT ,BABY” , no one is going to be able to stop them. I say let’s do this thing as “ONE HEARTBEAT!!! Our time is NOW!!!!!!!!!!
NOW, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?????

They’re NOT going to let Turner and Norwood beat them. If we cant get our passing game going, it’s going to be a long day. We really need Baker, but if he cant go, Weiner better step up his game BIG TIME. Good thing we signed a couple of BLOCKING tightends. Max protection all day long baby. It’s our only chance.

Mr. Ledbetter, you are doing a marvelous job. Keep it up because I’n stuck in Ny and don’t get to see analysis on my birds as much as I like.
The Falcons are ahead of Carolina in most team stat categories, and on par with them in all the others. We beat two NFL teams and could have beat Tampa after we settled down and outplayed them in the second half (at least between the 20’s). We’ve got the number one rusher (and the number 9 rusher!) and the number one sack man. Matt Ryan, for all his iffy arm strength, is top ten in yards per attempt (D’homme is 22 out of 32). There are a lot of people on that Defense making tackles including both safeties and the linebackers. The D-line actually looks like it’s getting better, especially if Big Gravy is in there. This team can stop the run, has done so consistently and convincingly in every first quarter. They need conditioning work, and some help from the offense on time of possession, so they can keep it up the whole game
I’m not too worried about Steve Smith, and Carolina doesn’t have a good tall receiver. We’ve got short corners, but nobody has pushed them around. What they lack in height they actually make up for in tenacity. The problem this week is Sam Baker may not play, which makes the O-line somewhat suspect again. But the team is playing with some heart so maybe the next guy steps up for a change, maybe the TEAM is actually coming together.
Call me a homer all you want, but this wouldn’t be the first time a team went from real bad to real good in one year.Win or lose, if they continue to play hard and are well coached, this could be one of those Cinderella story kind off years.

D. Hall????? Are you serious, we are soooo much better of without him, he got burned for a TD by an average reciever atleast once every 3 games, which a supposed lock down corner doesn’t do! Even though i personally feel like it was more like he got burnt every other game, but i’ll be generious & give him the benifit of the doubt. With that being said, Chris Houston’s gonna have to come to play sunday & be physical! & The other two keys are Ryan’s ability to get the passing game going because they will key in on Turner/Norwood, Ryan’s gonna have to step up & prove that he can move the ball through the air away from home & that he can preform in the redzone where Qb’s make their $ & actually come away from drives with 7! The other key is limiting their runnning game, if we can limit them to having no more than a 30 yard rushing advantage over us by the end of the game, I like our chances. Grady, Lofton, & Milloy have to bring their hitting sticks on sunday!

The key to the game (since GaTech is off this weekend) is turnovers. The Falcon D has to force five (giving up none). Let Steve Smith catch one, then rip him in half and take the ball he coughs up in for six. Del-Homey has to get the happy feet and sweaty hands; and the rookie RB needs to be Mr. Fumbled-Humble.
IF Carolina goes along with this game plan, the Falcons might win.

I live here in Fayetteville,NC area, and I see alot of the Carolina kitty, but I can tell you this, if the birds can keep the kitty from rushing as a team less than 100yds, and Matty Ice doesn’t turn the ball over, Falcons win 20 to 16. Jake Delhomme tends to lock in on his favorite target, that is why Smitty gets so many catches from him when he is there. Double Smitty, and just get good hits on Delhomme, Jake whines alot at his O-line, and is very unprofessional about it. He lacks real leadership ability. Hit him early, and often, and stop the run game, no turnovers, birds win.

Man, Ty- its amazing to see that even the folks in Carolina can see in Fake Delhomme what I’ve been complaining about for years- dude is a girl. More than any other qb (save J Harrington) in the league I can not stand the way Delhomme is all chest pumping and fist waving when his team is winning, but all boo-hoo and pouting when they lose. You saw it last week vs the Vikings and you’ve seen it practically his whole career. You’re dead on about that not being the mark of a true leadership and as long as he is the qb of the Panties, I will always bet against them. If not for their ability to run and sometimes play defense, I would put my paycheck on the Birds everytime…

You Falcon fans are “crazy as hell” if you’ll think the falcons are going to beat Carolina. You guys must be “fruit cakes,” with real hard nuts, to think that. Think about what you’re saying. Nobody respects the falcons or Arthur Blank in the NFL. Carolina doesn’t, and we’re playing in Charlotte. Other teams in the NFL don’t. Roger Goodell doesn’t. Former black falcons players, who Blank got rid of, don’t. Coach Petrino doesn’t. He didn’t even have enough respect of Blank to even give him a separation notice. And I could go on and on and on with this. The falcons are desperate. Their coaching staff spent so much time last week preparing Matt Ryan for that bomb he threw against the Chiefs, that that play and the motive behind it was obvious and ridiculous. It was all hype; design to get everyone believing that Ryan can throw deep. The falcons are a joke. And Carolina and the rest of the NFL teams the falcons play this year will expose that “joke.” I wish I could say more, but I only call it as as I see it. GET REAL! You falcons fans, “have another thought coming.”

The O-line needs to trap, let Turner run inside, let Norwood run outside, open up the play action. Don’t give Peppers too much of a free hand.
The D-line needs to control the corners, let the linebackers fill in the middle on the runs. Smith will get his catches, it’s the yards after the catch that the DBs need to control. Do some stunts to pester Delhomme.
Good, solid footbal doesn’t have to be flashy to win. If the Birds can keep it close, then win or lose, it’s a victory.

For the fans who know how games are won/lost. The Falcons are #1 in rushing and 9th in total offense. They are 15th in total defense. Carolina has given up more Sacks than ATL. Abraham should give Delhomme fits and when flustered he implodes. I’d say the Falcons have a pretty good chance to win. At some point these guys have to get a quality win and this may be the week.

John Abraham is salivating for this game. Remember the first year he came to ATL he had what, 4 or 5 sacks in that one game against Carolina? Delhomme wilts under pressure more readily than most QB’s. The other key is Matty Ryan, if he plays a solid game and doesn’t hurt the team with int’s like he did in Tampa the birds win going away.. 24-10.

Does anyone sense that the Atlanta Falcons’ offense and defense is similar to that of the 1972 Miami Dolphins coached by Don Shula? In the last game against Kansas City, it was third down and eight at about the Falcons’ forty yard line. Matt Ryan dropped back to pass and hit Roddy White on a quick slant for twelve yards; a thing of beauty. It reminded me of the precision passing of Bob Griese to Paul Warfield. The running of Michael Turner is reminiscent to that of Larry Zsonka. And Jerious Norwood can be compared to Mercury Morris.
Alright, alright, alright, I realize the vast majority of you weren’t born during the perfect season and have no idea what I’m talking about.
In 1972, The No Name Defense of the Miami Dolphins didn’t have many opportunities to shut down the opponent’s running or passing game. The proficient and workman-like offense of the Miami Dolphins’ offense usually took all the time off of the clock. But the bend but not break defense was efficient when called upon.
I think the Atlanta Falcons’ ability to control the clock with their workman-like and proficient offense will neutralize the Carolina Panthers’ double-edge sword with limited opportunities. And the bend but not break defense will secure the win on Sunday.

For starters throw all past games out the window. This years team is completely different than all past teams. This team has better talent, attitude, leadership and desire than past teams.I am becoming a big fan of Dimitoff and Smith. But this game is a real test for the Falcons. If Atlanta wins this game then they are for real and have a chance for a good year. If not, then get ready for a 6-10 season.

By TN Gizmo, if the Falcons go 6-10, that would be a great season for them. The Falcons will be underdogs in there next 12 games. By Exodus Mentality, I can’t believe you are throwing out stats after week 3 and the only decent team the Falcons played they looked terrible. The Falcons stats after week 3 are padded because we played 2 horrible teams they beat. Carolina on the other hand has played 3 very good defensive teams in SD,Chicago and Minn. Some of you are taking this opportunity to spew your hate for D. Hall. Ledbetter wasn’t making a case for him being an overall shutdown corner (though I think he was the closest we had since the Prime Time days), he was simply & specifically recalling how solid D. Hall played against S. Smith. That’s undeniable. Please look at Smith’s stats (especially TD’s) from the games in which he was matched up against Hall. I’ve got faith in Houston & Grimes, but there’s good reason to be a little more afraid of Smith this time around.

The Falcons will have to find some way to light a fire under Jamaal Anderson, cause if we can get pressure from both DEs then Delhomme will have a real bad day.
Sam Baker will be missed, but the other guys will have to step up. Coach Smith has planned for this by cross-training, and I like the way he keeps the guys fresh by frequent rotations.
As for covering Smith, I think we can do it. Houston looked good last week, and I really like the vertical jump that Grimes has. I see that New England has about three 5’9” DB’s, so height isn’t everything.

This Falcons team really frustrates me. It looks to my untrained eyes like this is a very emotional team, when they have the chears and the momentum I am not sure they can be beat, Turner is pounding the ball up the middle, Norwood is zig-zagging all over the field and Ryan is throwing bullett passes to 4 different recievers in 4 downs…..BUT whent eh going gets tough Ryan throws passes 3 feet over Roddy’s head, or he looks off wide open receivers and when the passing game isnt working the opposition just jams the run with 8 in the box.
C’mon BIRDS my 6 yr old has a bye week in football, the Dawgs got spanked and Kasey Kahne is hoping for a “top 15-20 finish” I really need something to be happy about in sports this weekend. How about a blow out??? Please? My sanit Monday depends on it!

One more comment/Question…can any of you the experts tell me why Finneran is not more involved? I know he got hurt last year but that guy is a HUGE target with a heart the size of Texas.
Even as ignorant as I am, I would not suggest taking White or Jenkins out but with Alge gone couldnt Finneran run some short TE routes for a second or third look on a deep route? I think we are missing out not having him in the game.
And what is your take on Mike Smith’s grade so far? I mean all the guy really has to do is show up to the games with a plan and he beats out Petrino, but is the consensus that he is doing well with this oung group? My opinion is he is doing a PHENOMINAL job, the players love him and as a fan he seems like he has a Cowher like temper which I LOVE TO SEE on TV. I am a Marine, so when I see a coach lose his mind protecting his team (like Bobby Cox does) it pumps me up man! I used to watch the steelers just to see Cowher lose his mind with the refs over a blown call.
Thanks for the feedback!

They have a rookie QB! Tampa and Caroline SHOULD win games at home against a rookie QB.
Atlanta is clearly the team on the come in this division. Yeah, they need a TE. And a playmaker in the secondary.
You guys can’t even imagine the number of terrible Falcon teams that I’ve seen. This team has an idea. Don’t discount their victories just because others do. KC lost to N.E. by only seven and beat the Broncos today.

Well, that was no huge surprise. We couldn’t establish our running game, and that hurt. On top of that, some of our guys were dropping passes at the most inopportune times.
Well, live and learn. Lot of penalties though. That we seriously need to clean up. Our secondary got victimized, but I’m still not unhappy with them. They’re young and small, but damn if they don’t keep on fighting.
We need Baker back in there. I hope he’s okay.
Panthers, congrats on the win. Probably eases the sharp pain of the much worse whoopin’ you suffered against Minnesota. Enjoy it while you can. Just think, a few more wins against us and you might tie us for the all time record. Or not. Heh. I think you better enjoy this one…

This Falcon defensive bunch will probably make the fourth string Packer QB look like Brett Favre in his prime. Oh, there is one thing these no-talents are not…professional athletes. To Hell with all of them. GIVE EM HELL PACK! Put 50 up.

JoeBrave, ereptile dysfunction, hah! I’m going to have to remember that one…too funny.
Stendec, just hate them Falcons, do ya? Now what are you going to say if we beat the Pack, eh? Come on, man. It’s not as bad as you say. There are guys out there really making the effort, and there are some that aren’t. I too am not so enamored with Brooking or Houston. But Grimes, as small as he is, is fighting for all he’s worth. At least you know he won’t penalize the hell out of our team enough to give the other team a touchdown for free. And Lofton is coming along just fine.
We need a better pass rush. John Abraham can’t do it all by himself, even though he currently leads the NFL in sacks. Jamal Anderson is NOT impressing me, but Babineaux is doing okay. It’ll get better for us. But this IS a different team altogether with a ton of young guys in starting positions and a totally different coaching staff. Rough times ahead, better times to follow.
We’re 2-2. The rest of the world was looking for us to be 0-4. I’d say we’re a bit ahead of the game considering all the circumstances.

RichBrave, I feel like we’re on the upswing as well. I’m not worrying. The coaches are not quitters, and the players aren’t either. Those that are will be weeded out over time. Same applies for those who cannot perform. Dimitroff and crew will make it happen. Blank’s got the money. And we’ll have a fresh stable of draft picks next year. It’s not like this is the Hawks, where the money ain’t there, the owners are morons of the highest degree, and the GM never was as good as he thinks he is.
And like you said, losing to the Panthers…hell, they’re supposed to be conference championship contenders. We’re in rebuilding mode. And we still fought. Like I said, not a surprising loss, and many lessons learned, I’m sure.

I’m a former Vick supporter, who doesn’t revise history to make Vick the problem some want to think he was. He was at times fantastic, he won us a lot of games and sold out more single-handedly. And I have got the Matt Ryan Kool-Aid on the counter, getting ready to pour myself a glass. His development is impressive so far. Yeah, he’s got a lot to prove, but if you’re acting like this guy is Joey Harrington, that’s a YOU problem.
