Sackless Anderson playing strong
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I was watching the highlights on SportsCenter and there he was, No. 98 standing over a fallen Jake Delhomme. It was Jamaal Anderson recording his first NFL sack.
Then, I regained consciousness.
Maybe that was a vision of what’s to come on Sunday, but it certainly hasn’t happened yet. But given that Carolina’s revamped line gave up five sacks last week and generally has trouble blocking John Abraham, perhaps Sunday will be Jamaal’s Big Day!
One other thing, we probably can’t call Jamaal a defensive end any more.
No, not because he doesn’t have a sack yet, but because he’s playing three different positions on the line. He lines up at end, tackle and plays on the ball as a nose guard when the Falcons flash a three-man front and bring in linebacker Stephen Nicholas. (Can’t tell if it’s a 3-4 or one of those funky 3-3-5.)
While Falcon fans are waiting for Anderson’s first sack. By all accounts he’s playing much stronger and is tossing his weight around in the trenches.
Coach Mike Smith noted that Anderson had six hits against Tampa Bay and played real strong. He had three tackles and one quarterback hit against Kansas City.
Carolina coach John Fox mentioned Anderson’s strong play when he was asked about stopping Abraham.
Abraham, with cameras rolling and recorders on, apologized to Anderson in the locker room on Monday for messing up his first sack. The affable Anderson overheard him and started yelling, “Thank you! Thank you John!”
So maybe this will be Jamaal’s week. Just when he gets to the quarterback, we hope he gets his money’s worth.
Can the Panthers stop Jamaal? Should the Falcons use a cornerback blitz like Minnesota did? (Antoine Winfield’s sack, strip, fumble recovery and touchdown return changed the game last week.) Can our young corners even blitz? With D. Hall gone, who’s going to start a fight with Steve Smith?

Chris Houston seems like the sort to start a fight with Steve Smith. Let’s hope not. I’m so glad that we have upgraded our coaches and these guys are trying to put players in the right position to succeed and contribute. Now that’s not to say that Anderson is playing like a #8 pick, but at least he is showing signs of a pulse. And Babineaux is playing quite well too. Providing a lot of Coleman-esque pressure from the DT position. But we don’t have much depth on the line and still need to focus on upgrading that position in the Spring.
The question for Sunday, who will stop Mr. Peppers from turning Ryan into David Carr?

Can the Panthers stop Jamaal? Of course. I could stop Jamaal. If a lineman so much as looks sternly at Jamaal he’s taken out of a play. Add in the fact that he’s incredibly slow for a DE and is the last person off the snap and you have a terrible DE. It’s time to give up on Jamaal at DE. Make him a DT full time. The only reason I’d hesitate doing that is because Babs is playing so well.
One thing is certain though, Jamaal is not cut out for DE. Something needs to be done.

He needs to do something. I am willing to concede last year because of the debacle it was. But this is a new year with new everything. If Anderson is going to make a name for himself, now is the time.

I still can’t believe we let Patrick Kerney go for this guy and then we keep Keith Brooking! WOW! These next two games will determine if we are playoff material. Our corners are going to have a LONG 2 weeks! The o-line is playing ok but they need to push Carolina’s defensive line out of play in order for us to be productive! This game is on the O-line and corners! Lets get’er done!
Is it me or does anybody else think Shockley should get some plays in during the game???????

I hear that John Abraham is calling Michael Turner “The Marta”…..this led me to another GREAT nickname for him I think (although I do like the burner), how about Michael “the martyr” Turner. Or is that too religious/political? He is willing to sacrifice his life or personal freedom for Falcons TD’s!!!
Say it out loud, its kind of catchy Michael the MARTYR Turner……I can hear it on TV now….”and the MARTYR to the 20, 25 30 he could yes, THE MARTYR sacrifices his body again for another FALCONS TD…and the Falcons beat the Patriots 75-0 in the superbowl”……sorry slipped into a fantasy land.

WOW yall, did somebody just write “the next two games will determine if we are playoff material”? Before the season, didn’t most of the blogs talk about hopefully winning 1,2 3, MAYBE 4 games? What a difference a few weeks and wins make. I’ll concede last year too for Jamaal just to be fair. Too light in the britches for a full time interior lineman, he can be a hybrid. Like an end slash tackle slash linebacker type guy. The guy does have 9 tackles so far. I just hate to call him a bust yet. I dont really know why. Guess I’m just a fan. Our corners can blitz and we do have a maniac at safety named Lawyer Milloy. This guy thinks he’s in his 20’s again. I ain’t gonna tell him otherwise. He’s reaking havoc out there so far. Talk about a momentum builder for the young guys. Abe got 6 sacks and Milloy leads the team with 22 tackles. Way to go fellas. Thats what veterans are supposed to do. I’m lovin this year so far. We need no more mention of that sorry excuse for a #21 either. how bout instead of fightin S. Smith we keep him outta the endzone!! Sounds good to me. Dirty Birds baby!!!!

yea sorry Whats Real, I am die hard UGA fan since I knew what football was and an even bigger fan of Shockley what a great guy never complaining about being a back up when we all know he could be another Shaub with a full year starting…..BUT Ryan is really starting to grow on me. He is inconsistent right now but hey what can you expect with only 3 pro games under his belt.
ALTHOUGH…it would not be crazy to see him in the “Norwood formation” for a quick option every once in a while would it? It could be some crazy trick play where Shockley QB’s fakes a keeper while running outside the box and hum’s a 20 yarder to White???? Hey would be a great follow up a few plays after the “Norwood formation”

The falcons brought in Jamal Anderson to be a pass rush force and he has failed. What if he was playing like that kid from Tampa, Gaines Adams. Just Imagine what a force our D would be if Abraham had a partner in crime. I’m supposed to be happy that Anderson is showing a pulse? No thanks. He can’t get to the QB so give chauncey davis and Bierman more playing time and stick him on the inside. In fact this offseason I would tell him to bulk up and get ready to become a defensive tackle. If he can’t get a sack this weekend against a rookie right tackle who has been struggling then what more evidence do we need?

Answer to What’s Real:
It is definitely just you.
The fact that you think Shock should get playing time and that you “can’t believe” the Falcons kept Keith Brooking is VERY strong evidence that you are ignorant regarding the game of football and/or you are so biased that your decision process is flawed.
Every coach (head coach, defensive coordinator & the LB coaches) who has been at Atlanta since Brooking was drafted has made him a cornerstone of the Falcons defense and has indicated he is a superb team leader. He is the perfect example of a professional football player and I wish we had several more in his mold. He has great size, speed, agility, attitude, drive, inteligence and character. If you have ever actually watched any Falcons games in the past 10+ years………you would know that the Falcons opponents almost ALWAYS design their plays to account for Brooking. Most teams send a guard, tackle or TE to specifically block Brooking. If we had a better defensive line, teams would not be able to continue this tactic. Brooking makes our defense better on all fronts and he makes plays even with the offensive coordinators spending their important assests trying to take him out of the game!!!!!!!

John Abraham said it all when he said that last year Anderson wouldn’t listen to the advice he tried to give the rookie, saying Jamal thought he was ‘all that’ being a first rounder. Well he said he is starting to listen to him now so we’ll see what happens. I don’t ever see him being what we lost in Kerney though!! I still hate that move!!! Kerney was a beast!!!

Hate to burst the bubble of the two doggy fans fantasizing about getting Shockley in the game. Do you not know Shockley is a third string clip board holder? Do you not know 3rd stringers are kept only as “emergency” QB’s? And I guess you also don’t realize that the Falcons kept him instead of Harrington because Harrington’s salary would have been about 3 times as high…and oh yeah, Blank likes to keep a “token” bulldog on the team. I believe he is the only one left.

Boy, you guys are TOUGH. He HAD his first sack in the first game against the Lions (I was there, I saw it) but they gave it to John Abraham. Talk about being shafted by a teammate. I know it wasn’t done intentionally, and I know it doesn’t show in the stat sheet, but he does have one sack on the season, and that was taken away from him.
I’m not ready to give up on Anderson just yet. Sure, he had a sackless rookie season, but try playing in the situation he played in last year with all the distractions and the debacle that the season turned into. I say chalk last season as a learning experience. I think that with this coaching staff and the work that he’s put in (let alone being open to move around on the D line from DE to DT - and let’s not forget that this guy HASN’T played DE for long; he was converted from TE to DE) he’ll be fine.

Perhaps I’m paranoid, but how does an offensive lineman get a concussion merely by hitting a defensive lineman’s legs? Someting seems awfully fishy to me. Does anyone think it’s possible a Buc DL stuffed something metalic in his pads for that very purpose? Perhaps for a couple of plays until the desired result occured. Does anyone know if that is even possible? I hate thinking like this, but the Bucs have been known throughout the league as cheap-shot dirty players for years.

A little known rule in the NFL states that if the 3rd string quarterback on your roster plays then the 1st string quarterback on the depth chart can’t go back in the game. So, if the Falcons were to put Shockley in then Ryan couldn’t go back in…unless they moved Shockley to number 2 on the depth chart.

Anderson can be a staple in the Falcons defense for years to come if he continues to listen and work hard; as long as Mike Smith is the head coach. Mike Smith will not keep Anderson around if he can’t become a force as DT/DE. I trust Mike Smith; his defenses at Baltimore and Jacksonville were championship caliber defenses.

Come on Blake,
Other than a quart of steroids being on every Carolina Panther defensive lineman’s breakfast menu, they have nothing to hide. Besides, their money belts weigh close to 20 lbs (they learn not to leave cash in the locker room), so an extra iron plate would slow them down too much.
Look at a skeleton and see which bone is the biggest in the human body. It is the thigh bone, which is connected to the knee bone. The biggest bone has the biggest muscles attached to it, so a lineman’s 350 lb body can stand erect. When that leg bone gets moving forward quickly, like when a ball is suddenly snapped, that leg/knee moves forward with the speed of mule kick. That is what kicked Sam Baker in the helment, at the same time he was quickly going down to cut the defensive lineman’s legs out from under that 350 lb body.
Now, a helment give the head cushion and protection, but if a vet defensive lineman sees a rookie o-lineman trying to cut his legs, he might just intentionally wait before thrusting his leg forward. That is “standard” dirtiness in the NFL. Some o-lineman have been known to bite, which kinda makes it even in the trenches.

To all these NFL gurus and draft experts how is a top 10 pick from a year suppose to play? People say they should be dominating the league and all this stuff when that is not exactly true. You have a young player who is going under his sceond coaching regimine in as many seasons as he’s been a pro. It’s funny how we drafted PK in the first round and it took him until his 3rd season to show what he was. All I know is that when I have watched ATL play this year JA98 is pushing to get into the backfield, he’s causing pressure, he has flushed the QB out the pocket, but people have been blinded by the different schemes that other teams have had over the years and seen how other guys have exploded into the league and they expect JA98 to be the sack god! In the scheme he is playing in he is doing what he’s suppose to do.
Don’t give me this crap, “Well he’s a top ten pick!” I would rather have him continue to improve like he has been in all aspects of DE rather than just being the great sack person and that’s all he does.
But all you Patrick Kerney lovers (I was one) who can’t seem to remember that he was once thought of as a wasted pick give JA98 time and while he may not be a PK he will be good for this team.

I can’t understand WHY so many are being down on Anderson so soon in his career?
If any of you remember,Kerney ALSO was a first rounder and took awhile to really come on when he took Lester Archambeau’s place. Coming out of Virginia and playing lacrosse,Kerney was thought to be a tweaner also…and a bust in the 99’ draft. Now check him out.
I see both guys (Anderson and Kerney) going down very similar paths…. Anderson WILL be a force at DE or DT. It has been reported that he worked in the offseason with former sack master Chuck Smith. He does have the speed and hustle,he just needs to keep working on his technique and he’ll be fine.
In no way should he be given the title “bust” yet. He should already have a half of a sack in his stat column,as Abe pointed out from the Lions game.Anderson is very strong against the run and he will pursue a play downfield. I love that he’s not just a “rush end”,he’s not scared to drop a back out of the backfield, which alot of “rush ends” don’t do alot or any of.
I think Anderson came back down to earth last season after being a sack master in the best college football conference and found out that being a 1st rounder does bring alot of pressure on him and that the NFL is alot tougher than the SEC.
I’m very happy to have him on the team and will continue to watch him prove the naysayers wrong.
As for Brooking,it’s tough to be a force when as was pointed out earlier,he’s never really consistently played behind a mammoth DT (Grady Jackson got screwed by Petrino last season,we all know that) and Brooking also has played alot out of his own natural position through out his career while being with the team. His numbers was alot better when we had a happy, healthy Coleman.
His pro leadership was instilled in him by one of the best ever in Tuggle. Let’s see what Urlacher and Lewis would do without a mammoth DT to play behind consistently, while also playing out of their own natural positions. Trotter left Philly, only to return because of the scheme and the better beef on the D-line at that time.Zach Thomas’s numbers had been declining with the Dolphins for a few seasons now.
And yes their is reason to be optimistic, we have a helluva coaching staff now and minus a bunch of self absorbing egos. I love the youth and tenacity that this team plays with compared to the last 5-6 years. Get over it,Shockley isn’t going to suplant Ryan as the starter cause he can’t read a defense like Vick couldn’t. For a rookie,Ryan is better than most thought he would be and better than what we’ve had for the last 6 years cause he can actually make accurate throws.
Yes,he’ll still have mistakes as he learns the ins and outs on the field. But the future of this team with him leading the way looks much brighter than as to when Vick was leading them. And quite frankly,it’s been long over due for this team to quit relying on 1 single player to make or break a season.
It was Deion, then Rison, then Jam,then Vick. Seems we have finally came back around to the earlier days of Bartkowski,Andrews,Cain,Francis,Jenkins ect. I only hope that history doesn’t repeat it’s self in that the O-line doesn’t cuut short Ryan’s career much like Bartkowski’s was from being sacked so often.

Actually, Kerney had 2.5 sacks his rookie season in a limited role, playing behind a vet. And by kerney’s third season he had made the pro bowl with 12 sacks. It sure doesn’t look like Anderson is on the same path as Kerney with zero sacks in 19 games started. And since Kerney was on the smallish side he had a lot more to overcome than Anderson. Quit lying to yourselves and face the fact that this guy is a bust as a defensive end. I’m willing to bet that Dimitroff will draft his replacement next spring.

People please, Mario Williams (Texans) was labled as a bad pick, and only had a couple of sacks his rookie season, and not until about game 8 last year did he become a nightmare to O-lines. Like it or not, Kerney was part of a D-Line that was incapable of shutting down rush heavy teams, Kerney is mainly a Pass rusher only, Like Freeney, Anderson plays solid against the run, unlike Gaines Adam. By years end, you all will see he is a more complete D-Lineman, don’t ask Adams, or Kerney to move inside and play DT like this kid is doing, he is versatile, and will be more productive, you will all see, and hey, he is an SEC product.

As another person has pointed out, Shock can’t go in for just a couple of plays, as then Ryan couldn’t re-enter the game. You could move Shock to #2, but then if Ryan got his bell rung for a few plays, you’d have to bring shock in instead of redman and obviously the coaching staff feels more comfortable with harrington in there in that situation.
I am basically just going to write off last year for Anderson. He’s played decently this year. Has he been worthy of a top 10 pick thus far? No, but no use crying over spilled milk. I think he’ll still be a good player and he can possibly continue to develop.
Does it matter at this point where he was drafted? No. We can’t undo a bad pick. Its not like if we bench him we’ll magically get that #8 pick back. So I don’t see any reason why people even care about the term “bust” any more. The issue is no longer whether or not he was worthy of a #8 pick, its whether or not he’s good enough to play on this team, and I absolutely believe he is, and thus I support him 100%.
Now that he has some real defensive coaches on him, unlike petrino’s staff, I think he’s making some improvements.
If he’s still not making much of an impact after game 8 or 10, then that’s a different issue, but I like the progress he’s made thus far.

I’ve been a Falcons fan for a long time, and there have been very few LEGENDS on the team. If you think about it, last year’s experience probably taught Jamaal very little with regards to playing his position so I’d really consider this to be his extended rookie year. Anderson may be sackless, as long as he’s not nadless. To change the subject, Ryan has a higher passer rating (77.0) than Delhomme (74.7) even if it is against much lesser talent. The Panthers lost last year 20-13 in a home defeat to a much weaker Falcon team. The Falcons aren’t expected to win but the road team has won the last five meetings so the pressure is more on them than us.

Carolina HAS to win this game. In reality this is a game that the young Falcons have to earn how to win. It’s not fair to expect a QB in his 4th pro game to go up there and win.
Let’s hope that he comes out of it in one piece. In a couple of years this years game could prove to be one of the reasons that the Falcons will be considered one of the conferences better teams.
I do wish however that the Falcons would use Jerious more like N.O. uses Reggie Bush. He’s got to get the ball more earlier in the game. Tampa was able to clog that middle because they didn’t have to be afraid of anything outside either OT. Can’t let Carolina do that.

Brooking should have been gone. He is slow, gets blown up on the blitz and is terrible in coverage!
As for #98… he should have never been here. We should’ve drafted Patrick Willis and cut Brooking but i forget… he is a good ole boy from the A

I’ve taken the time to see what Jamaal Anderson is doing during plays. One thing is this, trying to get to the qb before John Abraham does. The other is he’s doing just fine. He’s great in the zone blitz and causes pressure when he rushes or stunts. The defensive line players are substituted play after play to keep them fresh. The thing is when you have #55 it’s hard to get the spotlight. Look close folks. The shortcuts on DirecTV are a great source. Jamaal is a second year DE. He’s smart, articulate and a tremendous athlete. If he was a bust he wouldn’t play.

**”Vick is a LEGEND.” Are you serious? You are right we should be able to talk about Vick if you would like, but what’s the point? He won’t be released until 2009, VA charges pending, he has to be reinstated and more importantly will be more of a distraction to the FALCONS TEAM or will he help. I don’t recall him bringing any Superbowls to Atlanta. So to put him in the legend category along with Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan and Ali is absurb.”“

Put the crack pipe down! Anderson hasn’t even smelled a tackle, let alone a sack. This guys is the runaway Top Ten Bust of 2007. No one is close to this guy’s ineffectiveness. Bring back Aundray Bruce who was better and he was dreadful himself. Admit it, a wasted draft pick. He starts for no other team in the NFL but the Falcons.

Please bench, trade, or release Anderson immediately. Any 2nd or 3rd string DE could have better stats and help on the D Line. He is not strong or fast enough for NFL DE. Bust.

Funny how guys get all excited and run off at the mouth about stuff the absolutely KNOW. I give a guy a break on makin a mistake sometimes. We all do. But as I said in a blog on this very page yesterday and N2Pain must not’ve read, JA98 has 9 tackles this year. Three games and according to my math is…3 tackles per game avg so far. Not exactly comparitive to Milloy, but 9 tackles are 9 tackles, not 0. Maybe smelling a tackle and actual tackles are different? the kid will improve or be gone next year. We gotta give him at least the rest of this year. Why not? Are we SuperBowl bound without him?

Jamaal Anderson is playing pretty well. Remember, on the other side is a beast. John Abraham is playing like a man possessed. And Anderson, while doing good work, is just not going to beat Abraham to the sack. But Anderson is still putting on good pressure to the QB, so I’m satisfied with his play.
But I’m excited about this next game. If the Falcons come out and play their game- run the ball as a staple to take pressure off Ryan so he can make his passes, they can win the game. If Ryan attempts 17 or less passes, we will definitely beat the Panthers. But if he attempts more passes than that, I’m nervous.

Kerney’s first sack took 8 seconds. The quarterback moved in the pocket to avoid two other linement first.

I can’t believe how horible anderson has performed. He has one of the best de’s to mentor him what is his problem. And vick will come back, thank god, and replace mr. Butterfingers adam jennings as a pr. The falcons offense has the potetial to be one of the leagues best. Ryan has gone almost untouched his first couple of games the oline has truely stepped up. Douglas white and jenkins have really turned it on this year. And we all know about norwood and the burner. We will go back to the leagues best running game while finaly the potetial of a passing play over 25 yards. Falcons super bowl bound 2012
