A quick look at the Panthers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Panthers, looking to bounce back after a 7-9 season, have been bolster by the return of quarterback Jake Delhomme, rookie running back Jonathan Stewart and a revamped offensive line.
Delhomme is back after having Tommy John surgery in October of 2007.
Stewart, at 5-10, 235-pounds, provides them with the big running back to pound defenses and counter with scatback DeAngelo Williams. He’s also had an impact returning kickoffs, averaging 24.8 yards on 10 returns.
The Panthers are off to a surprising 2-1 start with victories over San Diego and Chicago.
Minnesota may have exposed a chink in their Under Armour. The Vikings were able to shut down the running game and get some hits on Delhomme. The offensive tackles Jordan Gross (left) and rookie Jeff Otah (right) had poor showings and will get to see defensive end John Abraham this week. (What’s over-under on his sack total? The Timmonsville, S.C. native gets fired up for the Panthers.)
Delhomme was sacked five times against the Vikings.
The Panthers did stop the run, holding Adrian Peterson to 77 yards rushing. They also kept LaDainian Tomlinson (97 yards) under 100 yards in the opener.
Veteran signal caller Gus Frerotte - (yeah, the oldtimer who sprained his own neck when he head butted a padded wall when with the Washington Redskins in 1997) had a decent day passing the ball against the Carolina secondary and rallied them from a 10-0 deficit to a 20-10 win in his first start since taking over for Tarvaris Jackson.
Who are the real Panthers, the team that beat San Diego on a last second pass? The Panthers who needed a second-half comeback to down Chicago? Or the Panthers who got ambushed in Minnesota by a relentless pass rush? Can the Falcons duplicate the Minnesota blueprint by stopping the run and getting to Delhomme?

I think Ryan and the offense will be fine. They will get hit early but as we’ve seen in the first three games they will adjust as the game proceeds.
My greater concern is how those rookie corners are going to do against Steve Smith and Muhammad. You just know Delhomme must be licking his chops waiting to pick the Atlanta secondary apart. In addition, Atlanta can’t afford to sleep on their RBs as well.

If Jamal Anderson cant get a sack or a lot of pressure on Delhomme Sunday, I’m giving up on him. He’s going against a Rookie. No more excuses. We know your’re decent against the run, but I want to see some PRESSURE. Look what happened when we moved Abe to the right side. I think he might’ve been over there for only 3 plays and had a Sack. Jamal has been over there for 19 reg season, and 8 pre season games and still does’nt have one.

We have done well against the run minus some big plays. We have to minimize the big plays first. Our Secondary has done a good job, we have not given up the deep pass. I like how are young DB’s are aggressive and jump the routes getting turner overs. If they can continue to play that way we should be able to get a couple of picks on Delhomme maybe score on defense. As far as the pass rush, Babs and Abe are going to continue to play in the back field, hopefully they can get some help from Anderson, and Davis, and Biermann somebody has to step on the D-line to get some pressure other than those two guys.

Not much has changed with carolina, as long as you frustrate delhomme into one of his hissy fits (which isn’t hard) and shut down their running attack you can beat them. I am concerned about covering steve smith but hey if our secondary can do a decent job covering calvin johnson and roy williams whom everyone thought was gonna dominate us, I’m sure steve smith won’t go wild. For the record Orlando: Chris Houston and Brent Grimes aren’t rookies. The only rookie starting on defense is lofton.

I agree Jamaal needs to improve the pressure, but he did get half sack with Abraham in the first game, right? He was supposed to be so nimble and faster than Kerney (who was plenty fast.)
I’m also hoping our secondary doesn’t play like they did in the TB game or Muhummed, who seems to play exceptionally well against Falcs, will eat us alive.
I shoulda taken ATL last week in my survivor pool…

Panthers are a good test.
They are well coached, play solid defense, run the ball and have a 5’8 linebacker at receiver.
Our game plans have been solid - Turner and Abraham have really earned their keep - leading on both sides of the ball. Turner’s protecting Ryan and Abraham is keeping the defense off the field.
Every phase of the game has been solid and opportunistic. Kudos to that offensive line and secondary, theyre getting the job done.
Schedule is a beast for a team that only one 4 games, but it is what it is. But I’m sticking with my 8-8 prediction, could be 10-6, but dont want to get ahead of myself.
Our depth is going to be key. We’ve got Foxworth and Irons chomping at the bit. Wire and Nicholson at LB. Snelling, Robinson, Finneran and Clabo on offense. All these guys could be playing right now if needed.
Thats depth we havent had in the past.

The Vikings shut down the Panthers because they have arguably the best front line in the league. The Falcons don’t compare to the Minnesota defense. Wharton also is back for the Cats and should solidify the offensive line. Look for 89 to have a big game and loosen up the Falcons defense which will provide wide holes for J-Stew and DWilliams to break off huge chunks of yards. Cats win 31-10 to stay in first place

The Panthers are going to focus on Abraham. Babineaux may step up his game, but I doubt Jamaal will. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think Anderson will improve enough this season to escape the tag of ‘bust’.
Our two wins were taken from bottom-of-the-barrel teams. Carolina is a much better team than the Lions or Chiefs. The big question is whether the Falcons’ offense will be able to match points with the Queen City Kitties. With that in mind, Matt Ryan will have to demonstrate that when faced with a worthy opponent, he has improved both his timing with his receivers and his decision making under pressure.

Same game plan. Try to get up early ( fast start & take the crowd out ), keep our offense on the field and theirs off. Pound the ball with Turner & Norwood. Take shots downfield off play action. Make sure to get good field position from special teams. Sounds simple but this is how this team is built. No gimmicks just straight up football.

Good blog fellas, we’ve seen 3 games so far. This game and next weeks on the road in Green Bay will be our final measuring sticks to see how we perform against ‘good teams’ (since DET and KC aparently weren’t). But if we beat Carolina does that mean they weren’t good either? Cuz Tampa Bay is probably gonna win the SuperBowl. And I guess, my fellow Falcon fans, that we are gonna go 2-14. just ask Daryl. The Birds D hold it down, the Burner and Norwood do it big again, White and Jenkins do what they get paid to do and the Falcons win this one in Charlotte, 27-13.

You fools think you have a chance in meeting us? You clowns beat Detroit & KC and think you are contenders or something. A community college could beat those clowns.
This is what we are going to do. That tinkerbell punk you call a quarterback is going to get pounded, even if we have to hit late. So what if we get a fine from the commissioner. We are going to kill that 72-million dollar investment and show you dreamers that you don’t belong on the same field as us.
Get real suckers!

I am a Panther fan and the Falcons always scare me, just because we never play well against them. I think it will be a good game and the key for the Panthers will be to contain Turner. Even though Matty Ice looked good in two wins, he hasn’t had to win it himself yet and if the Panthers can stop Turner, we might see the rookie get rattled a bit when the pressure is on. Plus Falcon fans are always so obnoxious at BOA, hopefully we can shut them up before halftime:)

If turner and Norwood can continue to carry the offense on its back the Falcons may have a chance. If they cant them Making Alot of Terrible Throws will have to step up and makes some plays.

I imagine the Panthers will be the Panthers that play the Falcons, at home in Charlotte.
There is something about real grass that makes slow people slower. Matt Ryan seems to do okay on the fake turf, but Carolina will be a test of how well he lifts his feet over the real grass blades, when pressured. I would hope the Falcons are giving their rookie tackle, Baker, the game off (a brain is a terrible thing to break), which means Ryan might have to move more than usual.
At best, Atlanta loses on a last minute field goal, say 26-24. At worst, it will be Del-Homey to Smith, all over a sleepy D, 35 - 13.

All you Carolina homies have been reading too much press. Just go back to last year’s BoA stadium meeting - you lost to a lousy ATL team. I hope the Carolina players have the same type of confidence because ATL is MUCH improved this year and the kitty cats are gonna get punched in the mouth regardless of the final outcome.
You beat a SD team that can’t stop anyone, beat a no-offense CHI and lost to a winless team. Matt started off slow against TB because he was playing too fast - don’t look for that mistake again against a “good” team but I am not conviced the kitty cats are in that category. He completly smeared the other 2 teams (picked the Chiefs apart).
I envision another quiet BoA stadium crowd (getting used to this) minus the few Falcons faithful that make the trip.

Stay classy Panthers fans. Keep representing what we all know and “love” about your kind.
I am glad your fans espouse willfully breaking the rules of the game in order to injure a player and that you also like to cause racial strife.
I hope you’re having fun in your 88 el camino with the “racing slicks”.

Love it love it love it. If the Falcons keep it close they’ll have their shot to win it in the fourth. This is a good team they’re playing, red hot even before they got Steve Smith back. I’m not going to be disappointed if we come up on the short side of this game, but I do believe we’ve got a real shot to win it if we can run the ball and the D plays em tough. I’d love to see Ryan take advantage of that single coverage he’s gonna see early. Keep building on it guys. GO FALCONS

Wait, Falcons fans trashed MV7? I thought that was the federal government and the fact that he broke federal laws.
Regardless, I honestly hope Michael Vick has learned his lesson and that he comes back successfully to the NFL. I wish him nothing but the best. That all being said, I think its best for both him and the Falcons if they both move on. He’s not going to come back to the team, too many bridges have been burned by both sides. The best chance his career has is that he gets his financial issues straightened out and goes to another team, maybe start out as a backup as he gets reacclimated.
All quarterbacks are “system” quarterbacks, and in the right system, I think MV7 could be a succesful quarterback. But that is no longer an issue that has anything to do with the Falcons in the present. For the forseeable future, Matt Ryan is the quarterback of the team, and I personally think that’s a good thing.
And Panther, unless you have some sort of evidence that you could “beat up” a 6’5” football player, I am going to just continue to laugh at how silly you sound.
Did you just make the word “boguarding” up? I can’t even really tell what it was that you meant to convey with that sentence.
And you are talking poorly of Falcons fans when you A) wished that your team would cheat (purposefully and intentionally breaking the rules) in order to cause injury and B) you tried to (unsuccesfully, by the way) incite a race argument at the expense of MV7 and those who hold differing opinions of him. You really don’t understand how immature and stupid you sound? And how poorly you are reflecting on your beloved Panthers? I would be ashamed to call you a fellow fan of any sports team I supported.

“You fools think you have a chance in meeting us?”
What position are you playing exactly? It’s not college, the games get played on the field and if we didn’t know that from other years then certainly Miami KILLING N.E. certainly should have showed us.
Though the Falcons certainly don’t have a grand history last season was an abberation. An incompetent rookie coach (thank god he quit! What would it be like if he’d listened to Blank and coached another year or two?) losing our top two QB’s (Schaub first, then Vick) and a player losing his mind on the field.
Carolina should beat a rookie QB but who knows? As far as Atlanta’s victories they can only play their schedule. I don’t think that Buffalo and S.F. are all of a sudden SB teams either but nobody is asking if they’re for real.

Yeah, I am willing to give Jamal Anderson more time. I mean he’s basically still a rookie, after the coaching debacle that was last year. How can people be ready to give up on him when he was being coached by Bobby Petrino and his staff last year? He seems like a good kid who works hard and he has physical talent. I believe that combination will eventually lead to success now that he has a great coachign staff that has tons of defensive coaching experience, from top to bottom.
I’d look for the “light to turn on” about halfway through this season.

My guess is that Anderson will get his “eyes on” this weekend and he will obtain no fewer than 3 sacks! The Predator will get 2 1/2. Yeah yeah I know you knew I was going to start playing the odds sooner or later.

But the thing here is that the NFC South is Salivating like Pavlov’s Dog, because The Birds are rebuilding.

Seems both have lost to good teams and the Panthers are certainly favored in this one. Now, after all the bragging by all Carolina fans, you had better hope your team can back up all the things that you believe they are capable of. Sure would be sad if you don’t come thru, wouldn’t it. In the dictionary of misspelled words, I think “boguarding” can be an ignorant spelling (present participle) the of the verb “bogart.” This word is defined as, “American slang origin, reminiscent of Humphrey Bogart’s signature practice of talking with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, instead of smoking or talking. Used when a marijuana joint or pipe or bong is being passed around a circle, and someone dallies instead of dutifully taking a hit and passing it on.” It was used in the song that appeared in the movie Easy Rider, which sang, “Don’t bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me.” The reference by the Carolina pot-head PANTHER (“boguarding the blogs”) was to indicate someone holding onto to the blogs and not allowing other conversation to take place.

Atlanta has a statue on all major Interstate highways leading to I-285. Each is a statue of an old hippie chick (circa 1965) holding up a copy of The Great Speckled Bird newspaper, with a headline that says, “Bring me your rejects, your outcasts, your inbreds, your losers who cannot get tickets into a professional sports game, and I will give you plenty of seats to choose from.”
That was intended to bring new blood into town, which would actually become Atlanta fans. At the time, there was only a population of 400,000 Atlantans, most of which had to flip a coin on how to spend their spare dollar each weekend: Bulldog game or Varsity dog combo?
Unfortunately, there still is only 400,000 Atlantans, most of which beg for a dollar outside the local sports arenas, when a game is being played. The other 4 million residents of the major metropolitan Atlanta area are “out of towners, just passing through” and not interested in adoring local teams with futile histories. They do enjoy a band wagon, however.
It only goes to show how easily it could have been the Jacksonville Falcons.

Jamal Anderson has to be the biggest bust since our first Jamal Anderson of 1998. Authur Blanks knows not to draft anymore Jamal Andersons from this point on. The Birds will hold there own this weekend in Carolina. We always play them hard and the series is in our favor for the last 3 seasons. Go Falcons. I strongly hope the Rookie Ryan holds up. He took a beaten from Tampa Bay!

I see exactly what I want. Falcons with new GM, coaching staff, QB, RB and philosophy, improving some each week. I really like the unpredictable offensive game plan, with some trick plays thrown in. The defense is steady and I like the way they fly to the ball and the blitzes are coming at the right times. Special teams are solid. Falcons 27 Carolina 13

Why must I read these blogs and keep hearing about Vick??? The dude is gone and I think for the good of the team!! Please let it go, I’m tired of hearing about him!!!
Now on to this weeks game. I think the Cats are a good team but no where near as good on defense as Tampa Bay. We kept that game close until the end and I’m sure the experience Matt Ryan got from that game will serve him well this week. You could see he ‘matured’ from the first half to the second. Plus we don’t have the D-Hall factor of keeping drives alive for the Cats either, which is another positive!!
I would like to see Finnerman get more playing time though. He’s not fast or flashy, but he is a big target that simply has good hands, catches the ball and moves the chains!!
Falcons 31, Cats 17!!!

FALCON 57 - Do your homework before you make baseless statements. Our defense is rated higher than any NFC South team. You may want to consult NFL NETWORK or some other professional source.
Either way, your tinkerbell qb is going to get a beat down!

What dissapoints me the most about this upcoming game is that DeAngelo Hall will not be around this time to serve as Steve Smith’s favorite whipping boy. But I’m sure the Falcons have done an excellent job of rounding up a new breed of punks for their secondary this year, and their short stay at Bank of America Stadium will be a miserable one. Having prepared for this showdown by beating those mighty powerhouses of the NFL, Detroit and Kansas City, the F* will be in for a real treat against Carolina’s front 4.
