Round IV: VanGorder vs. Gailey
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Falcons’ defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder gets to match wits with old rival Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey for the fourth time.
VanGorder was Georgia’s defensive coordinator/linebackers coach from 2001 to 2004 as Georgia posted a 42-10 record over that period.
Gailey was Georgia Tech’s head coach from 2002 to 2007 and never beat Georgia in six tries, including three losses - 2002, 2003 and 2004 — with VanGorder calling the Bulldogs defensive signals.
VanGorder’s defense stifled Georgia Tech in a 51-7 rout in 2002. The Bulldogs stopped Gailey again 34-17 in 2003 and 19-13 in 2004.
In K.C., Gailey’s unit is off to a slow start. They have scored just 18 points in two games and are set to start their third quarterback in three games. Brodie Croyle started the opener. Damon Huard started last week and the Falcons will see Tyler Thigpen.
Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star pointed out in this week’s NFL writers notes exchange that this has happened only three times in a non-strike season since the NFL and AFL merged for the 1970 season.
The 1976 Rams used Pat Haden, Ron Jaworski and James Harris. The 1988 Browns used Bernie Kosar, Gary Danielson and Mike Pagel. The 1997 Jaguars used Mark Brunell, Rob Johnson and Steve Matthews.
All three of those teams went on to a successful season (Rams 10-3-1, Browns 10-6, Jaguars 11-5). So maybe the Chiefs are set to make a big turnaround.
Against Oakland last week, Gailey was up to his old tricks from his Pittsburgh days. He slipped former Virginia quarterback Marques Hagans, a wide receiver, in as a Kordell “Slash” Stewart styled running quarterback for about five plays.
In VanGorder’s first season as a NFL coordinator, the Falcons have a young defense that’s having trouble getting off the field on third downs. With a rookie middle linebacker and young cornerbacks, they are still developing a personality.
Will VanGorder’s days of dominance over Gailey’s offenses continue? Are the Falcons getting a break by facing Tyler Thigpen, the Chiefs third-string quarterback from Coastal Carolina? Will Gailey’s superior NFL experience give the Chiefs an edge over VanGorder’s unit?

I think the birds will pull this one out. As for VanGorder vs. Gailey IMO it is the players that do all the business on the field. I am not a fan of VanGorder or Gailey I think they both should be counting their lucky stars for the jobs they have.

I’m a big Tech fan, but still wasn’t all that impressed with Gailey for his stint here (starting Reggie Ball for 4 years???) and never paid much attention to Van Gorder before this season so I could give a flyin rats booty about that matchup. The Falcons need to roll Sunday like they did against Detroit. Our defense is our saving grace. We put up a fight against Tampa Bay and if the offense didnt just give out like it did and some of those 3’s turned into 6’s (I got Elam on my fantasy team, so it wasn’t bad from a statistical standpoint), the outcome could’ve been totally different. Birds take it 27-10.

Sounds like Randy Covitz is drinking the Kool-aid. Those three teams were all built to win, which means the quarterback was automatically elevated to a level of competence. The 1988 Cleveland Browns also started Don Strock twice. In fact, running back Herman Fontenot is also listed as having started one game that season, although he only threw one pass (incomplete). Throw Jacksonville off the list, because Brunell started 14 of 16 games. Two other starters started one each (both wins). Again, all teams were built to win.
Now, KC is not built to win. Talk about their rookie DBs and I’m wondering, did the Falcons sign some DBs I’m not aware of?
Chan Gailey has a similar philosophy as Leeman Bennett. That philosophy is: If you get up by one point in the third quarter, then play conservatively the rest of the game, counting on strategic punts and good defense. The Chief’s D has given up 40 points. Van Gorder’s has given up 45.
The game is a toss-up. Take away the first quarter of the Detroit game and Matt Ryan has led the Falcons to 22 points, while the defense has given up 45. KC has scored 18 points, giving up 40.
I see 5 quarters of monkeys trying to “play with” a football, coming away with a 3 - 3 tie. On the positive side, it will make the Ds look good.

Ernie, bedwetter?? Thats not very nice. But its funny as hell. BooBoo c’mon man, at least give M. Turner and J. Norwood some credit. Not even twice in the redzone for the birds.. Either one of those guys can rip off a 50 yarder and at least give us good enuff field position to kick TWO field goals. We’re not that bad.

HA! No wonder the cheifs suck so hard core this year. Chan Gailey is possibly the worst offensive mind in football. The only good thing he did at Tech was hire John Tenuta as his defensive coordinator.

Scottie,
The way you stop a rookie quarterback (or third-string quarterback - same thing) is stop the run and make him beat you with his arm, while you pound him all day long. Let me see if I can find an example for you …. Hmmmm. The Tampa Bay - Atlanta game of September 13, 2008 comes to mind. Don’t forget, Turner is hurting, as is Elam. Of course, anything is possible, and that means KC could win this thing 40 - 12, or the Falcons could win 40 - 12.
The thing to watch is the GA Tech - Miss. State game. How goes the Jackets, so goes the Birds. It has something to do with the vibrations associated with having to play half (or more) of your games in Atlanta. But then, Paul Johnson might have the better style offense. Maybe the Falcons can line up in the wishbone, with Norwood taking the snaps, and optioning to Turner, with Mughelli leading the way? Nah. Makes too much sense.

With Big Grady healthy and the depth we got at the D-line position, I’m lookin forward to see some creative schemes in the upcoming weeks to get this team and coaching staff ready to be contenders next season. I’d like to think of this season as an extended preseason. Coach Smith and his staff got some finetuning to do as well as our QB and O-line. We will be competetive in many games this season, overmatched in some and theres several thats up in the air. All the division games are anybodies for the taking. GB, CHI, Philly and SD will be real tough games, but the rest are realistically winable. Its a great feeling to look forward to winning games again. Maybe I’m just an optimist and thank God last year is behind us.

Yeah, I like that Biermann kid. Almost reminds me of a young Patrick Kerney (good motor). I think he should start over the big letdown, Jamal Anderson. What a bust!!! Anyway, this is one of those games they should win and you have to win the games you are supposed to win.

I look for the Falcons to win big in this one and think Ryan will throw for his first 300 passing yard game this week!!! I think Turner and Norwood will have their way with the defense!!! Don’t forget Grady didn’t play in the TB game and that was a “huge” loss!! And everybody talks about how Graham ran all over the Falcons when you take away his 1 long run, he has 15 carries for 50 yards…..and i’ll take that anyday!! Keep on rolling Falcons and think a 9-7 season is very realistic!!!

Let’s see … Gailey, a decent man, drove Tech’s program into irrelevancy and mediocrity. VanGorder, a boil on the butt, drove Georgia Southern’s program to its absolute worst record since it was called Georgia Teachers College and they were the Blue Tide. Can they both lose?

I could care less about this topic and these coaches but here is one point to ponder: for those of us that have followed the Falcons since inception, historically this is the type of game they lose and the type of team whose level they play down to. Here’s hoping this is indeed a new team and they buck that trend.

Professional football is all about schemes prepared by the coaches and executed by the athletes. In the words of head coach Mike Smith, “punching and counter-punching.”
A professional football team can have excellent coaches and average athletes and will barely manage a winning season. On the contrary, a professional football team can have average coaches and excellent athletes and will have a losing season. Excellent football coaches and good athletes can win a super-bowl. Excellent athletes and good coaches can come close, but can’t win the top prize.
The Atlanta falcons have excellent coaches and good young athletes. It’s just a matter of time before the young Atlanta Falcons mature and adjust to the coaching; especially Matt Ryan. That light can be switched to the on position on any given Sunday.
I like the scheme of Brian VanGorder and the execution of the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

I can’t help but notice that no one has noticed Matt Ryan’s lack of arm strength, or his inaccuracy. He makes the receivers look like Lynn Swann, but the only problem with that is that they are only 10 yards away from him. I mean did anyone see how poorly he under threw Harry Douglas on the sideline he put everything he had into that throw and he still under threw him by 10 yards. In the NFL a quarterback has to be able to throw the ball off of his back foot with strength and accuracy, and his ball stays in the air too long when he is put in that position. He has a gun slinger mentality with a water pistol arm. He reminds me of another quarterback drafted number 3 with alot of pub coming out of college…. a young Joey Harrington. In a Few years he will learn to play more conservative and be a quality back up for someone, and this will go down as the worst draft pick in Falcons history, possibly NFL history due to the contract we gave him. I know this is a defensive blog but i had to say that.

Many NFL defenses are no joke. It’s not a walk in the park. And when you are a young quarterback sitting under center, until that light is switched to on, young quarterbacks will certainly look awkward at times. The light switched on in a quarterback’s mind slows the game down.
Matt Ryan can make all of the throws in the NFL. And arm strength ranks about fifth on the quarterback totem pole. Can anyone say Joe Montana? When the light comes on in a quarterback’s mind buttressed by excellent coaching, it’s his world. Everybody else is just a mere participant.

Ok joe Fish, we now know you are from the “pick Dorsey” camp. Get over it. The arm strength issue was put to rest on the first throw of his pro career. A 62 td strike. A water pistol? What team did you root for and he came to town and made your guy look stupid? Did he look any more stupid than you sound right now? Ryan is a solid young QB, Arm strength is not and has never has been an issue for the Falcon mgt or any other NFL team that scouted him. I know this may be difficult for you to attempt to wrap your pea sized around, but have you ever considered that some of the ints. he threw in college were a result of bad receivers? When it was pointed out that the receivers he had were not exactly quality guys and that his college career would have been better with better receivers , He said “Those are my team mates and are the best their is.” This conversation took place at dinner with Smith and Dimittrof, he could have thrown his guys under the bus but he refused. On a slow day at Jiffy Lube you can find all the answers can’t you champ?

I know it’s not politically correct to tell the truth. But if anyone is familiar with my history, I tell the truth to the best of my ability.
Mike Vick and Vince Young are naturally gifted athletes. In many respects, they generally have little need for the light to be turned on. Both quarterbacks have so much natural ability that the light appears to be already on. In each instance, both have allowed their natural talent to become a hindrance. And the social position which their ethnic group has taken in society impedes their desire for the light; but that’s another story.
All naturally gifted athletes don’t rely on physical ability alone through-out their careers. Michael Jordan said that he didn’t have a clue what he was doing on the basketball court at North Carolina. He was playing on natural ability alone. But Michael Jordan discovered the light early-on in Chicago, and the rest is history.

No clearly I was from the Bill Parcells Jets school of thought quarterbacks don’t win championships teams do. I would rarely ever draft a quarterback in the first round and I definitely wouldn’t draft one who hasn’t won anything I would trade down If I had the situation the falcons had because you have to build infrastructure for any business to succeed case in point look at The Pats current situation. You can lose one component and still function accordingly. The teams whose d lines and o lines are good in this league tend to have pretty good seasons no matter who the qb is. Oh yeah the social postion that my people take. Boy Ignorance is such bliss, you cannot place a group of people or any person into any category due to ethnic background my ethnic background is the same as yours it doesn’ t matter what color you are I’m from the American south just like you just like them have you ever heard of a man named allan keyes he’s black and he thinks entirely different from the considered black train of thought or idea system. Who goes to jail behind all the dogs taht are killed in the pound every year. Which CEO of a major pharmacudical company has gone to jail for selling a drug thats killing people or alcohol or tobacco manufacture, but how many of those people in those neighborhoods that you drive ninety through (since we are making generalizaitons) go to jail for selling something to someone that the person wanted. I mean has anyone ever made you drink or smoke a cigarette when you didn’t want it or an illegal substances you experimented with. Terry Bradshaw was and still is a head case, and if there were as many lobbyist for illegal substances and dog fighting as there are for all the drug companies including tobacco and alcohol. This country would have a far different view on that social group. Have you ever heard of Jim Crow.

I can’t believe that Ryan’s arm strength is that much of an issue because I’m sure Dmitroff compared it to Brady’s before he decided to draft him. It’s strong enough for him to have a successful NFL career. Jeff George had great arm strength and he isn’t highly regarded. We really don’t have Moss type receivers who can stretch the field anyway. Falcons and Ryan get a W tomorrow.

Dimitroff boy we have a great precedence in bringing in great talent evaluators here in Atlanta I hope your right, but from what I’ve seen we drafted Matt Leinhart. Okay if you really want to look at it what is the difference between Matt Ryan and Eric Ainge from Tennessee what makes Ryan a first round pick and Ainge a fifth round pick and they have a similar skill set. You can pick up a quarterback in just about any round. The Patroits know that that’s why Brady was a sixth round pick. I know its early in the season and everyone has hight expectations for our new franchise qb, but come December you will all come to the darkside. I wont hold it against you.

Do you really think that the Pats. have a crystal ball and just knew that Brady was going to be who he has turned out to be? If Bledsoe had not got hurt, we would have never heard the name Brady, he was to be Bledsoe’s back up.When you pick a QB in the later rounds(anything past the 2nd) it is 9 times out of 10 to be a back up player. Every so often you find a diamond in the rough (Brady,Favre,Romo). When you use a 1 or 2nd on QB, it is the same as any other position. Sometimes you hit it (Rothlisberger, Aikman,Elway,Marino). Sometime you do not (Lief, Harrington, the kid in Frisco). Although Harrington was thrown to the wolves behind the worst o-line in the NFL in Detroit. I believe he is shell shocked now, but had potential. Detroit is the pits, The GM is a clueless idiot. And the talk of building the teams starting in the trenches, The Falcons have spent a 1st round pick this year and a 1st last year on the o-line. They gave up a 1st round pick for Abraham (which was well worth it). They used a 1st round pick last year on a d-lineman. Sooo…in the last 4 years the Falcon have spent Four..count them 4 first round picks on the line of scrimmage Also you say “I would rarely ever draft a quarterback in the first round and I definitely wouldn’t draft one who hasn’t won anything I would trade down If I had the situation the falcons had because you have to build infrastructure) I guess that’s why you do not make a living in the NFL.

Joe, I mentioned Dmitroff because he comes from an organization that has won 3 Superbowls this decade. And I imagine that he has had his eye on Ryan for years because of his body of work at BC. That’s why Ryan is a better pick than Ainge because our GM has first hand experience observing Ryan. The Pats are in Boston. Also there was WAY MORE buzz about Ryan than Ainge from people in the know and other pro scouts.

Mr Era Scott Williams won three championships with the bulls, what does that mean well sometimes you have a good job where you are.”Every so often you find a diamond in the rough (Brady,Favre,Romo).” Brees, Hasselbeck, Delhomme, Warner, Bulger… do I neeed to keep going, are all Pro Bowl quarterbacks that are in the league right now that are prety good that were not drafted in the first round. Wow someone can’t count we didn’t have two first round draft picks in ‘07 Justin Blalock was drafted in the secound round infrastructure goes further than o line and d line we need a strong saftey did you see Lawyer Milloy get the truck stick from Warrick Dunn. Babineaux is a good young d tackle and sign Grady Jackson, but who after that. Ben Hartstock is are starting tight end. It has been proven time and time again when teams have a lot of holes to fill trade down and draft many quailty players instead of a few. How do you think those teams who seem immune to the salary cap do it. Do you watch football or did you stay in a holiday express last night?

Chiefs have a personel problem on offense which I think presents an excellent opportunity for the Falcon. It is seldom do we see a team in he NFL as bad as the Lions, but if we do it is the Chiefs. The 2008 Falcons are better prepared than the 2007 version and they play with more discipline, but there at least 20 teams in the league with better personal. We have a team which should win 4 or 5 games, which in my opinion will over preform and win 6 or 7. But we must absolutely beat the Chiefs and the Lions, rarely do you see teams this bad.

Atlanta Falcons fans should be able to look at head coach Mike Smith and determine that he has earned his way to the top. Nothing has been given to him on a silver platter. Trial after trial has produced pure gold. And that kind of coach understands the nuisances of the game etc and knows how to apply them in order to produce a winning football team.

Uhhhh….was somebody on here yapping about Matt Ryan not being able to throw the deep ball? Somebody ask Roddy White if he feels the same way….heh heh heh.
Michael Turner is the human bowling ball, I swear. I’m glad LaDainian is in San Diego, or Turner would be starting there and not here. I love this guy.
Also, big Kudos to this coaching staff. I don’t know if it was Mularkey all by himself, but he figured something out about the Chiefs defense. And exploited the hell out of it. Nice play calls. Don’t know about y’all but I don’t miss Greg Knapp at all, heh. What a difference good coaching makes. Good gimmick plays instead of stupid ones that only involve the quarterback running all over the place until he gets knocked out (and then we have NO offense). Ah yes, a balanced offense. What a concept.
Go Falcons!

Heh. Who’s that idiot Kansas City Chiefs receiver mocking the “dirty bird” dance in the end zone? Dude…we are up 24 to 7….not you…retard. Heh.

Bad way to start the second half. But if we hold on, my Birds and my Jackets will be a combined 5-2. Nice way to start the season.
Turner is a beast. Now with a lead, we feed the two-headed monster at RB and open up Roddy for the big play.

Cut F+++++G Keith “No tackle” Brooking. What a gutless loser! Falcons finally get halfway decent offense then defense vanishes. Touchdown in closing seconds of half completely unacceptable. Touchdown to open second half even worse! Decent teams will not let Falcons off hook like Chiefs did. Brooking has no business on field. PERIOD!

I realize the Chiefs are a struggling team, but we flat out beat them. Period. Our defense is better now than it has been in a while. For once (despite giving up some good yardage to a good running back in Larry Johnson), we looked solid. Bent several times, but never really broke. I’ll take 38-14 (31 of it offense scoring) any day, and I’ll take 2-1 as well.
How many people were talking about how bad we’d be, about how we’d not win a game or even seem relevant? By the way, Curtis Lofton looks like a better pick each game. I definitely like him playing the middle and getting Brooking back outside where he belongs. Lofton made a good play towards the end when it seemed like Larry Johnson might score. It was a solid tackle, not one of Brooking’s shaky shoestring numbers…
Matt Ryan was absolutely solid. He still needs to tighten up on some of those passes (throws ‘em too high from time to time). But he looked good in play action and made a very good decision on that one 15 yard run. After a handful of missed passes early on, he started making plays one right after another when asked to. What more can you ask from a rookie quarterback who doesn’t get but so many chances to throw each game?
Our offensive line is so much better than it has been. Those guys deserve a steak dinner. Turner and Ryan should be paying for it. Good work guys.
Another tough test ahead against Carolina next week. Let’s see what we can get done. Speaking of Carolina….where’s PANTHERS right about now, eh? Sulking from that good ol’ fashioned Viking butt-whooping? Heh, heh! I saw a lot of implosion on the field on that squad. I hope they come into the game with as little respect as their bloggin’ fans….we could use a win against a “superior” opponent. Looks like our record is the same right about now, though.
Hey Mr. Bowen (Kansas City receiver)…Chris Houston says thanks for the free interception. Oh, and that dirty bird dance you did earlier? It’s called KARMA….biatch…heh heh.

Hi Y’all,
Let the naysayers say what they will. The fact is that we are 2-1. As someone said, the same record as Carolina.
However, here comes the real test for us. It is all about how competitive we can be in these games. For a young rebuilding team like ours the next 4 weeks will be a serious reality check….at Carolina, at Green Bay, Chicago in the Dome and at Philly. Simply brutal. At worst scenario we will be 2-6 but I have faith in this team and I think we’ll be 4-4 or no worst than 3-5. Matt Ryan will grow up in a hurry, you mark my word. I have faith in this OL and I think they will make us proud. I won’t worry too much about our defense as the Sackmaster will be at it again!!!
Go Falcons!!!!
Nuff Respect!!!!

Wow that throw R.White was a thing of beauty. I didnt this ole Matty had the arm strength, especially after last week when he threw a couple of ducks. Well not today. I saw a QB in a falcons jersey, make checks at the line, read the coverage and throw with precision and accuracy. Thats no shot at any previous QB from the past, its just an observation of what I watched today. I was also listening for how many tackles/sacks Glen Dorsey would have. And for the record i was pro Glen Dorsey during the draft. I wanted the guy on my team. But the Matt Ryan pick has officially won me over.
Great game today Falcons… and as always GO JACKETS!!!

Falcons to be commended for victory. They are thus commended! Did not like lack of effort by defenders to keep Chiefs scorless by non-tackle at goal line in closing seconds of half. Any effort whatsoever in form of tackle would have kept visitors off scoreboard. Frustrated at unconcern to start new half as Chiefs waltzed uncontested down field to complete 14-0 scoring run. Keith “No Tackle” Brooking needs to go! Announcers made big deal over supposed tackle he appeared to make. HE MISSED! Normal for this untalented loser. Only brain-dead punt returner kept Falcons from turnover-free outing. Cut this bozo! Other than that it was a solid effort. At least the guys in bird helmets over the .500 mark for a few games. GO FALCONS!

As a GT alumnus, I am so happy Chan Gailey has moved on! As a Falcon fan, I’m glad he moved to KC! Who in the H€LL is doing the hiring in KC, anyway?

Yeah, I wasn’t impressed with Brooking either. I heard the announcers lauding him for making a tackle he really didn’t make. The guy tripped….

You guys still want Schaub? lol!! He looks horrible! That was the best, and only good move Mckay ever made. However, he followed it up by taking Anderson instead of Willis or Okoye. Wow! But then we used that 2nd rdr and stole Chris Houston. So good move overall.
